MLB LIVE🔴 Tampa Bay Rays vs Chicago White Sox – Jul 22, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

from inside Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay. MLB the show with a good one coming at you. It’s the Chicago White Socks taking on the Tampa Bay Rays. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Tampa Bay almost ready to get underway. And on the hill, the big righty Ryan Pepio and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason, he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. And that misses and the count is two and0. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Two balls. One strike ball. Go. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Austin Slater stands in. And that is out of play. [Music] That one a little bit high and the count is one and one. No, that’s a miss too low. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And now three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Fly ball down the line. Low hustling after it. Pulls it in on the run. What a way. Time to check out the lineup for the White Socks. And so far this year, this has not been a very good offense. Well, in this day and age, if you can’t slug and get on base, that OPS has to be at a certain level. If you’re going to produce runs, give your pitchers an opportunity as they’re facing tough offenses as well. Now it’s going to be Edgar Carol. First pitch just misses and there’s a ball. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. There’s the strike of the knees. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds. They’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. And that drops in for a strike. fights it off. He’ll see another. He’s mixing his pitches really well late on that fast ball after seeing the change up. See if he can elevate one. I think if he does, he’ll get the swing and miss. Next pitch is outside. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. And down on strikes he goes. And now two gone. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Now here is Lennin Sosa. Highf fly ball right field. Low snags it and that’ll do it. The White Socks leave one. Now it’s the Rays turn. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here at Tropicana Field on the hill for the White Socks, Aaron Cavali. What do we have on him? Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way, somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Number 14, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And another ball. [Applause] Just off the outside edge. [Music] That one’s in there. They’re now three in one. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. Left-handed hitter waits. That one misses. So a lead off walk now up for Tampa Bay. Jonathan Aranda and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Rudder at first with no outs here. Swings and misses and it’s on two. Knowing that the pitcher wants a ground ball double play opportunity here. You’ve got to lay off pitches down in the zone right there. Swinging at that pitch. That’s a no no. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another left field. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. All right, let’s take a look at the Rays lineup. a guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus, Yandi Diaz. Well, B just an on base machine. Last month he was on almost half the time and OBP over 450. Just a really tough out. I mean, this guy’s a catalyst for this offense right now. Yandi Diaz now runner on to go swing and a miss. Wide throw and it gets away. Well, the pressure was on and he knew he had to have a quick release behind the plate if he was going to have any chance of catching him at second. He’s got great speed and in this case, it resulted in moving up two bases. That’s what happens when you aren’t able to get your feet under you and square up to second properly. Next offering misses. One ball, one strike. ball. One strike outside. One away with a runner at third. Next offering is fouled back. Go. Fly ball center field. Robert moves under it. Drops into the glove. Runner tags from third. The throw is offline and he’s in to score and it’s one- nothing. Sometimes all you got to do is your job and don’t over complicate things. Keep it simple. Runner third, less than two outs. Put the ball in play and a nice job with the sack line. drips one to right, bounces over the wall in foul ground. It’s an automatic double. Well, there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that. You get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a throw or getting your uniform dirty. And now you’re just looking for the next hitter to kind of do the same thing. Maybe put one in the gap so you can jog home as well. Now at the plate, Josh Low. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Swang and a miss. And he was fooled. Man, he was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. can’t catch up. Man on second, two down. Cut out and miss. Curve ball struck him out. One run, one hit, one error, and one left. We head to the second here at Tropicana Field. It’s the Rays one, and the White Socks nothing. Second inning, set to go. Andrew Benendi steps up. Pepio back to work. That pitch gets the corner. 0 and one and a slider to the outside corner for a strike. quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. Here’s the O2 and a foul ball. He stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And he grounds one back up the middle, jumps, throws. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. The effort was there with the jump throw. You got to love it, but it just wasn’t at time. Still a really impressive play just to get to that ball and make it close at first. And not every shorts stop could even make that play. So, here’s Robert now right through there for a strike. One strike. Yeah, that’s a little high. Next pitch way upstairs. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation running on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play, swings through for the K. And the runner stays where he is. Yeah. The batter now, Miguel Vargas. And that one off the outside edge. That clips a corner. and delivers outside. Fouls one off. Two and two. Kevin Kelly is forced to the mound after the injury. Well, he’s had trouble at times keeping the ball in the park this season. Something to keep in mind here. two and two on the ground to third. Camero over to second, over to first. Safe digging in. Coulson Montgomery. Pickoff throw. Vargas back on a dive. That misses the zone. One and0. just missed. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Michael A. Taylor in the on deck circle, hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Tying run is at first here in the top of the second and ball four, two aboard. Not what he wanted to do there, Boo. That keeps this inning alive and gives this offense a good chance to cut into their deficit. First and second, two outs. And here’s the veteran outfielder, Michael A. Taylor. That one misses. That’s five straight. Swing and a miss. Strike one. One, one. [Music] And a count. One and two. Two on, two outs. Chases that one out of the zone. Out number three. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Back now in Tampa Bay. Bottom of the second. And stepping in for the Rays, Junior Camo. And that one cutting but missing down low. This one chopped on the ground but foul. [Music] on the ground to third. Montgomery tosses to first and quickly one away in the second. [Music] Matt th comes up to hit here. to the right side. Sosa slings the first already. Two out here in the home half of inning number two. Two down, base is empty. Hassan Kim getting ready to hit swinging a miss. Go and one. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. And now two balls in a strike. Two out. Base is empty and a swing and a miss there. Two balls, two strikes. Ground ball up the middle. Oh, look at the stop to first. What a play. Inning over. That was a great job of doing the math. He had the perfect angle. Diving stop completes the play and that ends the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. New inning getting started. Stepping in the White Sox lead off man Chase Maid. my draw in his rookie season hitting lead off in today’s game and he was drafted in the fourth round in 2022. That one outside and it’s one and one and a foul ball. on the ground right side and he handles it himself for the out. The right Austin Slater. Now the number two hitter Austin Slater flyed to right his first time. Just missed. One out. Base is empty. swings through that one for strike two. One ball, two strikes. Had a good eye there. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. One down. Base is empty. And that one is inside. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Foul ball and it remains a full count. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swung on. Popped up on the infield. Walls. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. They look really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as a hitter. Here’s the catcher, Edgar Caro. Struck out looking at his first at bat. That one finds the zone and that’s strike one. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Two outs. got him looking and it’s a one, two, three inning. Nothing doing it for the White Socks. They still trail one- nothing as we go to the last of the third. And the batter will be the shorts stop, Taylor Walls. Right through there for a strike. [Music] fouled off. He was late. [Music] The 02. That’s a strike out. Woody Keller says he went around. Back to the top of the lineup. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. He walked and came around to score his first time up. Fly ball to right and it’s caught for the out. Now the second base. Jonathan Aranda digs in now. Fly to left his first time. swings through that one. 0 and one. No balls, one strike. And the sweeper misses. One ball, one strike. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. And that one is off the wall and into second easily with a two out double. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. So close to blasting that one out of here the other way. But that’s very tough to do when you take on the outfield gap like that. Beautiful swing though. Let the ball get a little deep and drove it to the opposite field. Yandi Diaz next to hit for the Rays. And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. 01. There’s the strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact to the right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. One left for Tampa, but they still lead it one- nothing. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Lennin Sosa. There’s the strike. You know, these White Socks as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone, and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see, but I think they have to. Next offer is in for a strike. No ball. Two strikes. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. So he’s down on just three pitches. Watch the first two and then chased after the third. Yeah, not a very good at bat right there, Boo. But that was also some excellent pitching. The O and 01 pitches were both right on the edge of the strike zone. So it’s not like he watched two cookies go by. in a great job of expanding and making him chase the O2 knowing he would be in protect mode. Ben and Tandy up here and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. White Socks down a run. Hit in the air. Right field. Low has it sized up. Snags it for the second out. Luis Robert now struck out swinging his first time. And that one clips the corner. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Check swing called strike. This guy’s pounding his own. Hitters don’t have time to think in between pitches. Hard hit right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Offense held in check there. And midway in the fourth, it’s the Rays one. The White Socks nothing. Bottom of the inning. Now here’s the Tampa Bay cleanup hitter Jake Mangum. There’s the strike. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps with over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. In the air, left field, Taylor drifts towards it, makes the catch for the out. One up, one down. The right fielder number 15. Now it’s the right fielder Josh Low. Went down on strikes his first time through. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. Robert sizes this one up, makes the grab. Two down. The third base number 13. Two outs. Base is empty. Junior Camero next to hit for the Rays. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. Right down to shoot. That’s strike one. He must have been looking for something else cuz he gave up on that pitch a little early. It was right down Main Street. Oh, now this one’s blasted deep to left. way back there on its way and out of here. His 24th home run of the season. It’s two nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. [Applause] Matt ths now at the plate. Grounded out his first time up foul ball. two down. Nobody on to the right side. Sosa on to first and that is the inning. Solo homer extends the lead for Tampa Bay and it’s two zip. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We go to the top of the fifth. Stepping in, Miguel Vargas. Kelly back to work and he takes the strike. You know, these White Socks just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. Called strike right there. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. And that’s off the inside edge and it’s two and two. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Got him swinging. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly he had him fooled. Coulson Montgomery steps to the plate for the White Socks. Walked his first time and the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. And another ball. Two to count. The White Socks trailing by two. And we’re in the top of the fifth. This one in the air. Walls out number two, Michael A. Taylor. Michael A. Taylor will hit next. Struck out swinging his first time. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. edge of the zone for a strike. It’s 0 and one. I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a premier position, and that’s what he does. Next offering is in for a strike. The hitting is going to come around. He’s going to figure it out. But right now, his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense. That one just misses the outside corner, and it’s one and two. [Music] And a swing and a miss. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. Down in order go to White Socks. They trail it here. Two nothing. Back here at Chropana Field, ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now here is Hassang Kim. This one smoked out to left. Squeezes it and there’s one down. Now pattern number six, Taylor Walls next to hit for the Rays. Struck out swinging his first time. [Applause] That one off the mark and that’s ball one. He’s been going after these guys consistently and as a result, he’s been able to keep his pitch count low. Throwing the ball very well right now in the air to left down the line. And that drops foul. Base is empty. One away. Last half of inning number five. Off the plate inside. Two and one. Outside corner. There’s a strike. [Music] And that’s downstairs. And it’s three and two. That one ripped right center field. That’s back and it hits the fence and that’s a double. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And now the center fielder. He’s 0 for one. And there’s a foul ball. That’s off the inside corner. And now it’s even one and one. Activity in the pen for the White Socks. Tyler Alexander up and loosening in the pen. Cannon warming up as well. The 1-1 is fouled off. And the one, two misses to even the count. Two balls, two strikes. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breeds a sigh relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. keep him off balance, get him out of there and deal with the next guy. Now it’s the second baseman, Jonathan Aranda. One for two. Right through there for a strike. Walls at second with two down. two 02 fouled off and they’ll do it again. [Music] Next one misses. Now one and two. And that’s downstairs and outside. Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Swings through that and it’s a strikeout. He’s notched four strikeouts now. No runs, one hit, a double, no errors, and one man left. We’re through five. It’s the Rays two and the White Socks nothing. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Taj Bradley. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the ball. Back to the top of the White Sox lineup. Stepping in the White Sox lead off man Chase Maid Bradley the 6’2 righty he features a four seam fast a splitter a cutter and he occasionally uses a curve [Music] on the ground right side and it goes just foul Oh, next pitch misses and the count one and two. Bullpen movement for the Rays. Brian Baker warming up for manager Kevin Cashetta getting cranked up as well. That’s too low. And the count is even. Two and two. up the middle and it finds its way through for a hit. And they had their first base runner since the second inning. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Austin Slater getting ready to hit. Go for two in this one. And that’s in there for strike one. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit. And hardly order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get going. Runner on the move. Swinging a ground ball up the middle over to first. No chance at the double play with the runner in motion. Edgar Carol digs in now who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And there’s the strike with the tying run at the plate. And we’re in the top half of the six. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. [Music] Swings and misses. It’s a strike out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Oh, tough night at the dish. Punching out for the third time right there. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate. A little unsure of his timing right now. Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches. They’ll have some adjustments to make. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Two outs. And one in scoring position. Swing and a liner. Foul off to the right. [Music] And that one is downstairs. And the count two and one. Two and one the count now. He hasn’t seen a fast ball yet, but you’ve got to be ready to hit one because you doubt the pitcher wants this to go to a 3-1 count. Man at second. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center in position. Makes the grab and that’ll do it. They get a leadoff single but leave him stranded. Heart of the order 345 coming up. It’s the Rays two and the White Socks nothing. Back now in Tampa Bay. And now the first baseman, Yandi Diaz. That missed inside. Ball one. on the ground to short dives and he can’t hang on. Gets it there in time though and they do get the out. Smooth play on the bare hand there at third. That was nice. Next to bat will be the Rays four hitter Jake Mangum. swing and a line drive and a base hit up the middle. Just kind of slice that one into center. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. Low in the box again. Takes a strike. [Music] Savali checks the runner. Mango back in on a dive. Swing and a ball ripped right field and that one back and that one is gone. And they add a pair. It’s 4 nothing. That’s a swing that’ll boost the win probability for sure. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Now the White Sox manager is out of the dugout and will make a move to the pen. Aaron Savali will depart and it’s going to be a start that he’d like to get a redo on. Not his best. Back with a new arm in a minute. New pitcher for the White Socks, Jonathan Cannon. and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. So, one out, nobody on. Junior Camro next to hit for the Rays. That clips the zone. Go and one. No balls, one strike. One down. Base is empty. And that’s downstairs. And one and one. The one-1 is fouled off. bows it off. Still one and two. Still only one out here in the inning. Stays alive. [Music] And that’s in the dirt. on the ground to the left and that’s just foul and it remains two and two. Good job to fight that one off. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another about to see the 11th pitch of the Abab here. Swing and a hard hit liner up the middle and a base hit. He forced a lot of pitches to be thrown and ends up collecting a hit. But when you see that many pitches in an at bat, your chances of succeeding go off. And right there we see the result. And now the catcher comes up to him. Matt ths has grounded out a couple of times. Pitch misses. Ball one. Man at first. One away. Outside low, two balls, no strikes. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. Next offering is fouled back. Well, pretty clear to me he was trying to go deep right there, but you got to get a pitch that you can handle. The next offering misses and the count’s full. And they’ll do it again. Oh, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Lifted in the air right center field. And it falls and out to a board. The batter number seven. Now it’s the DH Hassan Kim and the pitch is outside. Ball one. Well, Kim is one of those players that it’s just hard to take your eyes off of him. And not many players in the 2023 World Baseball Classic had more fun than he did. He hit a grand slam in a win against China and earlier in the tournament had a two homer game. Delivered some special moments for Korea. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Got it started a little too early. Strike one. Traffic on the bases with two already in to score here in the bottom of the six. And he hits a ground ball right side, dives, but it kicks off his glove. Now he gets it to the pitcher covering the bag and they end up with two in scoring position after the out at first base. This is what it’s all about on that right side of the diamond when you’ve got the first baseman involved in the pitcher as well. First base does a great job. Knocks the ball down, gets away from a little bit, doesn’t panic. The pitcher’s exactly where he’s supposed to be. Nice feed and a nice play for the out. Taylor Walls next to hit for the Rays. Right through there for a strike. Camero at third. Thice at second with two gone. Next offering is in for a strike. keeps the attack going with a foul ball. [Music] Two on, two outs. That will close rule the ball and the count is one and two. Well, as a pitcher, when you make a big pitch down around the knees and don’t get the call, it’ll lead at you out there. So, some handle it a little bit better than others. And right here, clearly letting the ump hear it a little bit. I next offering misses down and away. Two ball, two strikes outside and it’s three and two. Battling here as he fouls it away. Second and third, two down. Quite the matchup we’re seeing here. Six foul balls in this at bat alone. Really making them work out there. This one in the air center field. He makes the grab. And that ends the inning. The Rays with a two-run homer. It’s now a four nothing ball game. Back after this on the show. We go to the top of the seventh and now Andrew Benendi off the mark there and that is ball one. No strikes. Ball. Just missed. Three balls. No strikes. Next offering in there for a strike. Three and one. Big bat right here. He did the team thing. Took until he got a strike. Now he’s got to go to work. Shorten up that swing a little bit. Do whatever it takes to get on base. Check. Swing. Called. Strike. Full count. on the ground right side over to first and Benendi is out now. And now here’s the big center fielder Luis Robert. A little out front there as he swings through it. This guy’s usually not one to chase pitches off the plate, but he did there. We’ll see if he can tighten up his zone a little bit. Drilled in the air out towards right center. Sizing this one up. And there are two down. Two down, base is empty. Miguel Vargas steps to the plate for the White Socks. That one’s in there. Strike one. Now, this manager knows that his players are just trying to do too much. Everybody needs to just take a deep breath, relax, and let it naturally happen. That’s inside. One and one. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Two outs. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. misses off the play and a countdown now even up swing and a hard hit liner up the middle and a base hit. Backto back singles. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive in Montgomery. Now the third baseman, Coulson Montgomery. And the first offering is not close. Just missed. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Two ball. One strike up the middle and it’s through for a hit. And now first and second with two outs. Couple of singles back to back. really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. And maybe they’ve got something going here. Trying to get back into this one. Taylor in the box now. No balls in a strike. First and second, two down here in the top half of inning number seven. Tap foul at the plate. [Music] And that’s the swing. It’s a strike out. Starting to run out of outs as they’re unable to chip away midway in inning number seven. And it’s time to stretch. It’s the Rays four and the White Socks nothing. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Alexander bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. There’s the strike. Well, these Rays digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far, and that tells me they’re seeing the ball out of the pitcher hand really well. on its way to the corner and a foul ball. With all those extra base hits, it’s easy to think we’re going to see that trend continue the rest of the game. They seem to be really locked in at the plate. Next offering misses and now two balls and two strikes. Gets a piece and stays alive. caught him looking for the K. Jonathan Aranda the next to hit. One for three. Let’s go. And he swings and misses at the initial offering. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Brandon Eiser appears to be getting ready. And I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Wilson also throwing down one hammer but pulled fouled. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the seventh. Fouls it back with two strikes. [Music] Spoils a two strike pitch. And he’ll see another. bounced up the middle, sends it to first. Two up, two down. The first baseman number two, Yandi Diaz. Yandi Diaz will hit next. Swanging a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. Slater makes the play and it’s out number three. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Mason Angler and he’s got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes attacking these hitters. So, back to the top of the order. Stepping in the White Socks lead off man Chase Maid. This to third. Over to Diaz. One up, one down. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. And now the right fielder, Austin Slater. Shut him down. And first offering is fouled off. [Music] Everything came together for him. Textbook bat control right there. Got a pitch on the outside, saw it deep into the zone, and just barreled it up. Went the other way for the knock. Man at first with one gone. So up next for Chicago, Edgar Caro. And that misses one and0. [Music] And that drops in for a strike. Slater stands at first with one out. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. Next one misses. Two and two. And that just misses. And ball four to a board. Well, this could be the start of something. They haven’t found a way to score yet, but now is their chance to change that. Here’s the second baseman, Lennin Sosa, 0 for three with two flyyous and a strikeout. inside and that’s ball one. Action in the pen down there. Pete Fairbanks warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Bole getting loose as well. One out. Runners at first and second. Ripped to right. hauls it in for the two down. Now it’s Andrew Benendy to hit and that one upstairs. Ball one. 10. Just missed. Two balls. No strike. First and second, two down. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. [Applause] And fast ball misses outside for a ball. Counts full. Three and two. Luis Robert Jr. waiting in the on deck circle. They can get him up. He’d represent the tying run. So critical pitch right here. fouled off again and it remains three and two. Two on, two outs. And that’ll load the bases. Well, the stage has been set for this offense. Boo. It’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here. Two outs, bases full. Here’s the center fielder, Luis Robert Jr. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strikeout. Check swing called strike. [Music] Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. The tying run at the plate and downstairs. One ball, two strikes. Line drive and that’s a base hit to right. One run is in. Ball comes in. Runner stops at third. Base is still loaded with two out. Well done. Narrows the deficit with the RBI there. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. didn’t get jumpy, didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep, took the barrel right to it, and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Now, that sets up a huge bat in this ball game. At the plate, Miguel Vargas, two outs. One one. That one missed. In situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. Here we go. And he can’t come up with it. Still manages a throw. Low throw picked. DC. I think he got a little casual on that play and took it for granted a little bit. So maybe just as much of a mental mistake as a physical one. And with two outs, that’s a tough one to swallow for the entire defense. And the Rays manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Mason Angler departs and he leaves with the bases loaded. So he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him. The left-hander on now, Garrick Clevenger. Big swing and miss stuff right here. Boo. Averaging more than one strikeout per inning this season. So far he’s been pretty electric. Coulson Montgomery now at the plate. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Music] just missed. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in a run. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. So, the tying run at second. Homeplayed umpire is trying to tighten things up a little bit. That one finds the zone. Three balls in a strike. Ball four and a run comes in to score. Well, not what they were looking for from him out of the pin. That’ll drive a manager crazy. He wants guys to come in and attack the strike zone. White Sox making a move for a pinch hitter Mike Tman. A critical at bat in this game for him. Highfly ball down the left field line and that’s the third out. So they get three runs in the inning, but they also leave the bases loaded. Home half of inning number eight straight ahead. It’s the Rays four and the White Socks three. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s the switchhitting outfielder Jake Mangum. Alexander back to work and that drops in for a strike. Movement for the White Socks in their bullpen. Brandon Eer appears to be getting loose. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. No ball. Two strikes and a ground ball to first. Vargas takes it to the bag and that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Now it’s the right fielder Josh Low. He’s already homered in this game. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. That misses and that’s ball one. Inside corner at the knees. That’s a strike. Good fast ball. Slow ground ball to the right side. And foul ball. [Music] One down. Base is empty. And a foul ball. He stays alive. fights that one away. Still one and two. The other way. He’s got it. There’s two away. Junior Camro digs in now. He’s already homerred here in this one. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. Hammered down the right side but foul [Music] and that is downstairs. Two and one. One strike ripped but a curls foul. Two down to foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Hammers that one deep left field and forget it. [Music] Another homer. His second home run of the game. and they tack on to their lead. It’s 5-3. A little more breathing room is always a good thing in baseball and now they have it. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Matt ths next to hit for the Rays. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Two down. Base is empty, but one run across here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. That catches the top part of the zone. That’s strike two. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. That’s out number three. And the Rays get one on a solo shot. Last chance coming up here for the White Socks. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Pete Fairbanks. Save opportunity for him right here. And he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with a W. [Applause] steps to the plate for the White Socks. The shorts stop takes a ball. Fairbanks a 66 righty. He features a fourseam fast ball, a slider, and he works in a change up. Swinging a foul straight back. Late on that fast ball. Just not able to catch up to that velocity. [Applause] Foul ball. Still a one and two count. There’s a ball. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Next offering away off the plate. And that wasn’t even close. Ball four. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. They’re not ready to go home quite yet. And here is Austin Slater. swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Brings it in and there’s one down. He’s two outs away. And here’s the catcher, Edgar Caro. 0 for three in this one. And that misses ball one. tying run at the plate and misses inside. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days, you would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup with the tying run at the plate. You’re in the top of the ninth. Misses inside. Three and two. Now at this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Lennin Sosa in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Fights it off. He’ll see another. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one, that’s the one. When he elevates, guys aren’t touched. And there’s a hit. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Been a pretty rough game at the plate for him so far. A bunch of strikeouts. So that felt good, I’m sure. Pitch was away, so he definitely pulled off it there. Not what you want to do with the pitch in that location really, but he was able to guide it into the outfield for the knock. Now a huge bat in this game coming up. Sosa in the box now. Takes strike one. spikes that one. It goes to the back stop. Both runners move up on the wild pitch and the double play is no longer in order. Got to take advantage of this opportunity now because of the wild pitch. They’ve got two runners in scoring position. Good time for the hitter to lock in. Put the ball and play hard somewhere. [Music] Don’t be surprised to ball on the ground to the corners that they come home with the baseball instead of going to first base. So, the tying run at second and that skips in the dirt. This is the guy they turn to to get the most important outs of the ball game, but they’re going to make him work to get this save. That one missing inside. Andrew Benendi in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Second and third here. One away. swing and a miss. He struck him out. White Socks down to their final lap. Good pitch right there. I mean, he’s attacking a location that this guy at the plate tends to have trouble with. And there’s just so much information in this day and age. Sometimes too much information. But the guys that can take that information, process it, and then go out there, boo, and execute the pitch, go right after that hitter and get the result that they were anticipating. That’s really good pitching right there. And it’s a good job of the pitcher and the catcher working together. Two on, two outs. climb the ladder with that fast ball and the count one and one. Slider misses outside. He’s got a base open. So, the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked. And that’s outside. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter count. Luis Robert Jr. in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. That one catches the zone. Three and two now. The White Socks down to their final strike. Ball four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Oh, you know this guy wants to swing it, but he’s showing some good patience in this one. It’s the second time he’s taken ball four. So, bases all loaded up and now the center fielder, Luis Robert Jr. and fouled off. [Music] And now the one ball one there. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. So they’re all loaded up. Foul off down the right side. Fouls it off. Still one and two. And that’s outside just off the outside edge. That turns out to be a really good take right there. But you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. [Music] The delivery to Robert swing and a miss and that’s the ball game. Well, four games wasn’t too long of a losing streak, but they’re definitely happy to be back in the win column. Now you can turn things around, get on the right track and probably start a winning streak from here. A 53 final score in this one. For Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show, thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon. Stop it.
