MLB LIVE🔴 New York Mets vs Los Angeles Angels – Jul 22, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
just about set to go now. Our starting pitcher in this one, number 82. What do you have on him, Chris? Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters. Not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss. Now it’s the shortstop. Zack Neto, he set a new careerh high in home runs this year. And Sigy, he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible now. Swanging a liner foul off to the right. Next offering upstairs. fouled off down the right side. [Applause] Kicks and fires bomb. Two two count. Got him looking and he didn’t like the call. Well, you know, that’s got to be very frustrating for this guy. He knows the strike zone extremely well. And you know what? Good hitters are not going to compromise. He’ll take that punch out, but ultimately stick with his plan and have more success than anything else. Now the number two hitter, Nolan Showell. There’s the strike. Oh, and one, popped up left side. Lindor pulls it down and there’s two gone. All right, let’s take a look at the Angels lineup in that cleanup spot. A key piece for this club, Taylor Ward. Well, these days we know teams, you know, they put a game plan together for every hitter in a lineup, but a guy like this, they circle him, make sure he doesn’t beat you. Uh, so, you know, they put in a little extra time and effort and on how they’re going to approach him. He can be a huge difference maker when he’s hot. So, it’s going to be fun to see how they try to work him right here. Mike Trout in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. that misses and one and one. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Hey, and that one lifted in the air center field. [Applause] He’s got it. And that is out number three. Onto the bottom of the first. No score. Back here at City Field, today’s starting pitcher, Ryan Zephr John. What should we keep an eye on here? Yeah, he’s definitely had a struggle so far this year, as evidenced by that inflated whip, but he’s going to have to find a way to limit the base runners, put his team in a position to win a ball game. So, we know he’s prepared. We know this guy’s a competitor, and we’ll watch how he works in this one. Francisco Lindor, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. For Lindor, being drafted out of Mont Verde Academy, he’s a guy that’s turned into one of the best all-around players in the game. Foul ball there. Let’s go. Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. And now it’s Mark Vientos. Lindor on the move up the middle. Needto handles, throws to first. One gone. Bottom half of the first. batting third. Let’s take a peek at the Mets lineup here and a big part of it, a guy with a great track record, Francisco Lindor. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Juan Sodto now in the box. Comes up empty with a swing there. That one misses. One and one. Swing and a miss. Looked off balance that time. Wow. Good luck catching up to that one. Lindor the runner at second with one away. Fouls it off. Still one and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes. But that’s not what that pitch was. Hit on the ground to the right side. Steps out first for the out. Batting fourth, first baseman Pete Alonzo. And now it’s the polar bear, Pete Alonzo. It’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate under the Mendoza line so far this month. Check swing and he went and that’s strike one. 0 and one. [Music] Just side and that is out of play. Runner at third. Two away and he chases that one and that’ll do it. Mets strand one scoreless after one. Back here in Queens, new inning getting started. And now it’s the Angels cleanup batter, Taylor Ward. New York. Ward needs just one more homer to reach 100 in the big leagues. And a foul ball. Yeah. and making it to a 100 homers would be quite the career accomplishment for him. Out of the more than 20,000 players to take an at bat in the majors, less than 5% have ever hit 100 dingers. Whips it to first. One up, one down. Batting fit centerfielder Joe Adele. Here’s Joe Adele. Chris, he’s definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. And first offering is fouled off. Second inning here. No score. Off the mark there. One ball, one strike. Boo. Our man Daryl Parker DP at home plate for this one. Pretty average size strike zone, but the book on him is that it sort of moves around. You can’t always count on how he’s going to call it from game to game. The lefty ready and a 1-1. And that one fouled off. Yeah, he’s one of those umpires that I have to see make his call on a borderline pitch before I start making my call. Like you said, it’s not always predictable, but it’s pretty fair for the most part. Cut misses. It’s a strike out. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Jorge Soler, the next to hit, takes ball one. He’s a master at hitting fast balls. You need to be careful with location if you’re going to throw them. Two outs and it’s fouled away. Just missed. And there’s a foul ball. Two out. Space is empty. Still two and two after the foul ball. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. pitcher having a pretty tough time getting that swing and miss. Third foul ball in a row. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Angels go down one, two, three. We go to the bottom of the second. No score. And welcome back to the ballpark. We head to the bottom of the second. And now Brandon NMO. NMO. Zephr John back to work. Zephr John 27 years old and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in Kansas. The 01. One ball, one strike. Swinging a ground ball up the middle on the run. Throw to first on the money. Nice play. I’m impressed with this guy’s internal clock. He knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step, secure his grip on the baseball, and make a strong, accurate throw. Ronnie Mauricio now and there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. One out. Base is empty. Comes up empty. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. Two strikes. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That one ran inside. Almost got him. Let’s go now on the ground right side and it finds its way through for a hit. So a man aboard now with one away back against the wall with two strikes but found a way. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit but got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. And now here’s Jeff McNeel. [Music] And the first pitch misses for ball one. Pickoff throw and he’s back in on a dive. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Mauricio the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Missing inside now. Two balls in a strike. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. fouls one off. Two and two. Bounced to the right side. Slings to first in time. Daddy eight. Center fielder Tyrone Taylor. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. Tyrone Taylor up now for the Mets. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. Well, this guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. Squirts away a little bit. Mauricio up to third on the wild pitch. Have to be really sure you can make it safely to third when you’re in scoring position and two outs. Got to get that run across. Very important. Does a nice job of reading it. Gets to third base now just 90 ft away. [Applause] And that’s way high now. One and two. Two strikes down. [Applause] Swings through him for the K. Went back to the fast ball and it was effective. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly he’s happy with those results. Well, here we go. Top of the third scoreless game. Here’s the power hitting catcher, Logan Ohappy. Just missed. Swings through that one for strike one. One and one. next offering upstairs. He really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. That’s a nice miss right there. Swinging a popup. Mauricio calls it in and there’s one away. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Luis Rangifo the next to hit for the Angels. First pitch misses. Next offering is fouled back. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. Just threw that fast by him. Elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. This one in the air. Carousive. And there’s two down. That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there. Hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him. Instead of a line drive or something hit deep, it’s a pop up and an easy out for the defense. Kevin Newman stands in with two away as he takes a ball. And that one is downstairs at a countdown two and nothing. Line to right and that’ll be a base hit and that extends the inning. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Back to the top of the Angels lineup. And now the shorts stop. Zack Neto. Now snap throw to first. Newman back on a dive. [Applause] And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Check swing called strike. One ball, two strength. [Applause] The shorts stop takes a ball. Two gone, but the go ahead run is at first. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. Angels strand one. Still no score. And we’re back ready to go for the last half of the inning. And here is Luis Tor swinging a highf fly ball out there towards left field. Puts it away for the out. Up next for the Mets, shortstop, Francisco. Back to the top of the Mets order. So up next for New York, Francisco Lindor. Francisco Lindor at the plate. The Mets shortstop. Originally drafted by Cleveland and a guy with some serious power and an excellent defender. Down the line. It’s a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single [Applause] now batting. Now Mark Ventos grounded out his first time. Lindor the move. That one hit to right. Solair gets under it. Makes the catch for the out. Looks like the weather could actually play a factor in this one. It’s coming down pretty good. Yeah, it is. And it’s not too bad yet, but the field’s not going to be able to hold up if the rain gets any worse than this. So, keep an eye on the pitcher mound as well. And the rest of the infield start to puddle up a little bit. Sodto in now. Takes ball one off the plate. [Applause] fouled off. He was late. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at in a one count. Just not able to square it up. A little bit high. Ball two. Sliced hard but fouled. Well, they gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone. I’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again. And it remains two and two. And there’s a ball. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Pete Alonzo, the kind of bat that can make a big impact if they can keep it going here. Fouls it back with two strikes in the air right field. Solair getting an angle on it and he can’t quite get there. It’s a foul ball. Here comes a 3-2. Battling here as he fouls it away. Grinding AB right here. About to see pitch number 10. Check on the runner. Lindor back in there. So now two on and two outs. When you go that deep into an at bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. First and second, two outs. Pete Alonzo up now for the Mets. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. It really feels like we might be running out of time before a rain delay is called. This rain is not letting up. Yeah. And if we do get a delay, the unfortunate thing is the clock’s going to start ticking on these pitchers and they won’t be able to keep their arms warm forever if it’s a long break and going to have to exit this game a little early. [Applause] Not even close there. Two and one. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. [Applause] Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field and the inning is over. Two left for the Mets and we are still scoreless. Back here at City Field onto the fourth and now the first baseman Nolan Showell. Strike one. One’s the count on the ground right side. McNeel, lead off hitter, retired in the fourth. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Here’s Trout. Great speed and great power, a great athlete. Quite simply, when you have a real athletic player and who’s able to do the baseball mechanical things really well, look out because the sky’s is the limit on that potential. Swung on, belted. Sodto really on his horse for it. Couldn’t get to it before it dropped foul. One down, base is empty. falling behind two and one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Gets a piece and stays alive. waving a miss and he got him. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. That was a really nice base call for that midway slider right there. You look at the sequence in that at bat and he hadn’t thrown it yet. So, just makes it really tough to recognize and fight off with two strikes. I’m sure it looked like a fast ball all the way until it wasn’t. Taylor Ward the next to hit for the Angels and that one upstairs. Ball one. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Now batting the center just kept it simple playing Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down. Joe Adell the next to hit struck out swinging his first time. That one fouled off. Swinging a foul straight back. That misses and the count one and two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Music] cut out a miss. Drops him out. So he picks up his six strike out of the ball game. So no runs here in a base hit. No errors and one left. And midway in the fourth, no score. [Applause] Back here in Queens, here’s Brandon NMO. Left fielder Brandon NMO. Tried to check his swing there. appeal to third and that’s going to be ruled to swing. A one down. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Stretches out and holds it in. Up next for the Mets, third baseman, Ronnie Mauricio. Next to hit, Ronnie Mauricio. [Applause] And that’s outside. Ball one. All tied up. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. There’s a high chopper and that’s a foul ball. check swing and he went in the count. One and two. One ball, two strike. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball. I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. Veryable location, but he found a way to just get it by him. Jeff McNeel stands in. Grounded out his first time at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Two down. Just missed. One and one. [Music] And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger. Nope. Inside. And perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit York. And that’s in the dirt. on the ground right side. He takes it on his own and he has thrown four shut out innings. Nothing doing for the Mets and we’re still knotted at zero and welcome back to the ballpark. And now Jorge Soler Solair in his 10th season, 33 years old and he was born in Cuba. Right through there for a strike. Oh, and one. Next offering pop foul off to the right. Out of play. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two and that one is inside ball one. Next offering upstairs stays alive. [Applause] [Music] I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. That could jump start an offense that’s really struggled to score in this one. Don’t want to wake a team up with the free pass. Go ahead run on base. And next for LA, Logan O’Hap 0 for one so far. Fast ball is outside on the ground right side. Lindor one over to Alonzo. Double play. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play, and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. Luis Rangifo will hit next and a rope into center field. Base hit. So, a two-out knock keeps the inning alive. Now batting third baseman Kevin Newman. The batter now Kevin Newman. One for one with a single so far. Base knock right field. So that’s two straight two out hits. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on the line. And you know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did and he did it perfectly. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Next to hit, Zack Netto and that’s in for a strike. Two outs, couple of base runners at first and second. [Applause] [Music] The short stop takes a ball stirring in the bullpen for the Mets. Klay Holmes getting ready to go. Brazob getting cranked up as well. Late swing fouled off. [Applause] Two on, two outs, and no one can get there. Heading for the plate now. A long throw home, but it’s offline. He will score. And it’s one- nothing. Oh, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. First and second, two outs. So in now for the Angels, Nolan Showell. Pitch misses and it’s one to know. Well, he’s just given up three straight hits. And now behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout. Maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit. In the air, center field. Taylor moving under this one. drops into the glove and that’s the third out. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Jose Soraniano. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. The batter, Tyrone Taylor. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Taylor [Applause] and he takes one right on the black and it’s 0 and one. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. This to third. Newman throws across the diamond and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth. Now batting catcher Luis Torren. Here’s the catcher for the Mets. Luis Torren. Fly to left his first time. misses off the plate. One and0 activity in the bullpen for the Angels. You say Kikuchi up and loosening in the pen. Fulmer the right-hander also getting loose and he hits a ground ball right side and foul ball. [Music] just missed. [Applause] Let’s go. Check swing called strike. [Applause] Home team down a run. Last half of inning number five. [Applause] Swing and a ground ball. And that one gets through into center field. Got to love the resiliency showed in that bat. Battling with two strikes. Let’s get the ball by the pitcher. There’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. So, the lineup flips over and here is Francisco Lindor. Fought off foul. [Applause] And now it’s even up. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. And a count one and two. [Applause] Knocks that one away and will do it again. Man at first, one away. [Applause] High in the air out to right. Pulls it down and they’re two away. Now batting designated hitter Mark Ventos. And stepping in for New York, Mark Ventos. 0 for two in this one. [Applause] Whoa, that’s down in the dirt. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. Lead runner to second with two gone. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Timing on the swing was good. able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Now, a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. And now it’s Wanoto. And that drops in for a strike. [Applause] outside and it’s one and one. [Applause] Strike two and there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing a run. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Two on, two outs. Right side. Ranifo throws to first in time. They get the out on Sodto and that will end the inning. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher Clay Holmes just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Well, one game Mike Trout digs in now. Mike, he is quite an athlete. I mean, you look around the other sports, basketball, football, you feel like he could thrive in one of those sports, too. Come on, New York. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Movement in the bullpen. Edwin Diaz, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. misses the sweeper. One ball, two strike, and now two and two. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Bergie just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count off and two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Here’s the left fielder, Taylor Ward, possibly thinking about home run number 100 here. He’s just one shy of that milestone. And first off is fouled off. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top half of the six. Swing and a ground ball out to short. Now a jump throw and very nicely done for the out. Up next for the Angels, centerfielder Joe Adele. Two outs, base is empty. And next for the Angels, Joe Adele, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Come on. Ground ball left side and foul ball. Slashed foul down the right side. Then a hook off into the seats. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Fights it off. You’ll see another. fights that one away. Still one and two. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like. But you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s going to blink first. And a swing and a miss. down on strikes. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Angels one and the Mets nothing. Bottom of the sixth inning. Here’s a big power threat. Pete Alonzo. Pete Alonsozo. Soraniano back to work. Grounds one to short. Neto. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Now the Angels manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan. Now pitching for new pitcher in the game for the Angels Kikuchi left-handed batter at the plate and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So this seems like a calculated move. And next for the match, Brandon NMO Brandon NMO [Applause] and he takes one right on the black going one. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. with a tying run on at first here in the bottom of the six. Got him swinging. Nice. Doubled up with the slider for that punch out. The one before just caught the zone. So, as a hitter, you have to protect right there. Great pitch to just expand a little bit more. He got that chase he was looking for. That right there is good pitching. So up next for New York, Ronnie Mauricio. And that one a little below the knees. And that’s ball one. And another ball. One- run game. One out, one on [Applause] three. Last couple of pitches, breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. And ball four to a boy. Definitely lost the handle during that sequence. Four pitches for the walk and that last one didn’t even threaten the zone. Catcher might want to go talk to him. Now here is Jeff McNeel. He’s grounded out a couple of times. That one finds the zone and one. Well, in this situation with runners on, you got to get ahead in the count so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. Next pitch is inside and the count even one and one. [Applause] High-fly ball out into left center field. Ward drifts towards it, pulls it down, and he makes the catch. Two down. So, two down now. And here is Tyrone Taylor. Tyrone Taylor. This one in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate there. Oh, great stop the throw and that’s a nice play to end the inning. So they strand a pair. We’re through six. It’s the Angels one and the Mets nothing. All set for the start of the inning. And the batter now, Jorge Soler. All for the Angels, right fielder Jorge Solair. That misses the zone. And that is ball one. Swing and a fly ball. Well struck left field. NMO balls it in and there’s one away. Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay close. Logan stepping in. Logan Ohappy. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Outside with a breaking ball. Two count. You really don’t want to give in here. You got to work the edges. Really execute a pitch. Hopefully, you can get back into this count. [Applause] Next pitch misses. And now three and one. All right, let’s go. Next offering is fouled back. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there. Anyhow, up next for the Angels runner on first with one gone. And next for LA, Luis Rangifo. One for two. First off, offering and it just misses. Popped up foul territory behind the play. Torren makes the grab for the second out. Now batting third base. So in now for the Angels, Kevin Newman. He’s two for two. Inside ball. Let’s go. Hey, I got one ball, one strike. [Applause] The one-1 is fouled off. Oh, sit him down. [Applause] Headed towards the corner. Lays out and makes the play. One of the most fun and exciting things you can do as an outfielder. You lay out, you make a diving catch, and you end the inning. That gets the team fired up in the dugout. [Applause] Now pitching for the We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Sam Bachman. Sam. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. [Applause] This one chopped on the ground but fouled. Looking to get the tying run on base and he takes one right on the black. No balls, two strikes. [Applause] That one missed. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. And a swing and a miss. And one away. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this when you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Here’s Francisco Lindor. Not your prototypical leadoff guy. Gets on base. Yes, but also some power. Swinging a foul out of play. [Music] And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider action in the Angels bullpen. Rock Burke, the left-hander, up and throwing. [Applause] Cut on and lifted in the air. Adele under this one. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting designated hitter. And now the DH Mark Vientos one for three and that is downstairs. And that’s ball one. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. Two balls, one strike. It’s in and out of his glove. Still finds a way to get off a throw. Misplay doesn’t cost him. Inning over and the Mets go down one, two, three. They’re down one- nothing. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the game. Reed Garrett. And he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one in innings, so he’ll be tough to get to. Now it’s the Angels lead off man, Zack. Zackto. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. And that is in there for a strike. I believe that’s the split. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. It’s through for a hit. So runner aboard to start the inning. So digging in Nolan Shanowell 0 for three in this one. Swing and a miss. 01’s the count. Nobody out. Runner at first. Turn two. And that’s in there at the knees. Action in the pen down there. Oscar Brazel appears to be getting loose. Stan getting loose as well. 0 and two now. And that’s down and away. Two strike. And that’s downstairs. Two balls, two strikes. He’s trying to stay down in the zone, but the hitter just will not chase. Now back in a two- two count. He’s going to have to go to something else to get him out. Swing and a miss. Struck him out of a splitter. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across, especially in terms of movement. That thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. If he keeps it down, it’s just so tough to put wood on. Here’s Mike Trout. And that one fouled off. [Music] Let’s get the easy. Let’s go. Swing and a taper that rolls foul. Next one misses and the count is one and two. Come on, punch him out. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Third time he struck out in this one. And definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days. But when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead, getting that W. Taylor Ward, the next to hit for the Angels. He’s sitting on 99 career homers. We’ll see if this is the moment to notch number 100. Let’s go. Here comes the pitch. There goes the runner from first. Strike in there. Throw to second and great jump. You know, having a good lead is so key when you’re stealing bases, even if you got great speed. But if you don’t have great speed, but can get an extended lead and a good jump, you can steal bases on a catcher who can really throw it. That’s a nice job right there. [Applause] BS another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Angels lead one, but they still lead it one- nothing. [Applause] Ready for the bottom of the eighth. Woo. Now, a lot of times you’re looking for a guy to get that tying run on base, but because of the power, you want him to tie up the game with one swing here. That’s too low. One and0 activity in the bullpen. Kenley Jansen, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Next offering is in for a strike. Getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. And that one is inside and fouled off. I want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good VLOO. [Applause] And now the count is full. And another power hitter lurking in the on deck circle. Pete Alonzo in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient. The play the game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. Substitution being made at first. Pinch running here. Luis Anelkuna. Here’s Pete Alonso. known for his late inning heroics. [Applause] Now a pop up on the infield. Pauls it in for the out. Oh, that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there. I mean, that pitch was right down the middle. I think he got a little too excited, came out of his mechanics, and instead of driving that ball somewhere, he popped it up. unfortunate for him. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Sam Bachmann gives way and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching for Burke gets the call from the pen. He’s been so good against lefties. Now the left fielder, Brandon NMO. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. Left field. Ward under it and there’s two away. Well, such a confidence boost for a reliever to come into the ball game and get the first hitter he faces. Just makes everything slow down a little bit and then from there can really settle in for the next Ronnie Mauricio. Ronnie Murio Ruer takes off pitch in for a strike. throw there. Safe. And the tying run is now in scoring position. [Applause] So the tying run at second. There’s the strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. first two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. [Applause] Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. [Applause] Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Out number three. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Ryan Stannic. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Jared Young into the game now on defense, but in a strange way. This is not a position he’s used to playing as far as we know. So, in now for the Angels, Joe Adell 0 for three with three strikeouts. Adele [Applause] right through there for a strike. Oh, this is just part for the course these days. Huge fast balls coming out of the bullpen. Action in the Mets bullpen. Oscar Brazel appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. [Applause] swing and a miss as he was late that time. Slider such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So, you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing play. Spang and a miss. Struck him out and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Well, that seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You’ve got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. [Applause] Jorge Soler up at the plate. [Applause] That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. He’s a bullpen arm that keeps the ball in the ballpark, but obviously out of the bullpen, you’re looking to limit home runs. Yeah. And that’s why he’s such a high leverage arm. Just doesn’t matter for him. He looks at attacking the zone and attacking hitters regardless of the situation. On the ground, dives and he can’t hang on. No throw and they can’t get the out. Now batting catcher Logan Ohappy. Logan Ohappy the next to hit for the Angels. [Applause] Spring and a miss. That one at 99. Strike one. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Gosh. Slider down and in from the same side thrower. There’s really nothing you can do with that pitch. Just tip your cap. Andy O2. That’s ripped. Base hit. And they’ll have runners at the corners after a one out single. Backto back base hits showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Runners at the corners here. One away. And now Luis Rangifo. Runner on the move and a foul ball. Yoan and now a bunt, but it’s a foul ball in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring. Swings over the splitter for strike three. Well, that’s the effect of the splitter that you’re looking for on the mound. Really nice pitch right there and had him out in front over the top. I’m sure the batter was thinking he was getting something else. Perhaps a fast ball a little more straight and below to it. Newman in the box here lets that one go for a ball. Runners on first and third. Two away here in the top of the ninth. There’s the strike. I got a ball. One strike. [Applause] Just dismissed. Out there to center. Taylor hustling after it. Long run. tracks it down and that is that. No runs on two hits, no errors and two men left stranded. Bottom part of the order, 789, two up in inning number nine. It’s the Angels one and the Mets nothing. Back now and on the mound, the closer Kennley Jans. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Well, one run game. Here’s the second base, Jeff McNeel. Jeff McNeel. [Applause] In there for a strike at the top of the zone. [Applause] That’s out to center field. Makes the grab. One down. Now batting center fielder Tyrone. He’s two outs away. Tyrone Taylor getting ready to hit. Ball on to Taylor. Counts. One and0. [Applause] [Applause] Two balls, no strikes to count. That two seam fast ball is usually coupled with a slider away. And when a hitter’s conscious of the pitch in, it’s hard for him to cover middle away. And that’s where a pitcher can really finish off that batter. [Applause] One down, base is empty. No break. Luis Torren in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Pull four. He walked it and that’ll keep the line moving. Four pitches. That’s an easy walk, man. He could have walked me right there. Dude, the last one wasn’t even close. And here’s the catcher, Luis Torren. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. Well, with pretty good speed over there at first base, I think the pitcher’s got to slow everything down. Hold the ball a little bit, step off, just try to break the rhythm and timing of a potential base stealer. [Music] [Applause] That one misses. That’s five straight. Pure base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in scoring position. [Applause] That one off the mark. Two and0. Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Try to keep the game alive here in the bottom of the ninth. [Applause] That one missing inside. Francisco Lindor in the ad circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. The 3-1 fast ball for a strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. trying to stay out of the double play right here. Ball four. He walked in and that keeps things going. They’re not ready to go home quite yet. And in this big spot, here comes Francisco Lindor. This is a big spot for a big time player. [Applause] Ball one, no strikes. [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] That’s in ball two. [Applause] [Applause] Outside Mark Ventos in the a deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. 3-1 now and they’re all loaded up. Well, the stage has been set for this offense, boo. It’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here in the bottom of the nine. Mark Ventos up now for the Mets. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, he’s already in some trouble and falling behind in the count makes it even worse. Then you’ve got to throw the ball over more of the plate and that’s where they can really do damage against a guy like this. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. The winning run on second base. Good job to fight that one off. Here we go. [Applause] fouls it back with two strikes. A oneun lead there. The home team trying to pull it out. Got him looking for the strike out. Now only one out remaining. I don’t know what he’s looking for right there. You have to be ready to swing the bat. You can walk it off if you’re just a little more aggressive. Now it’s the right fielder Jared Young. Entered the game on defense, so this is his first trip to the plate in this one. [Applause] Late swing, fouled to the left. Well, comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean, you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it, but this is where they earn their keep. [Applause] Jansen fires. That’s off the mark. And one and one [Applause] [Applause] and that is out of play. Two outs. Both the tying and winning runs are on. [Applause] swing and a miss and that’s the ball game. Well, this one was all about the pitching and defense. Outstanding job of the pitchers really attacking hitters, trusting what the catcher was putting down and trusting the players standing behind him to make the plays defensively. Sometimes you want to see a high-scoring game, but sometimes you can appreciate the artistic beauty of what these pitchers did on the mound today. One- nothing the final. Kenley Jansen picking up the save for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
