MLB LIVE🔴 Cincinnati Reds vs Washington Nationals – Jul 22, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
with Chris Singleton. I’m John Shambi. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Cincinnati Reds and the Washington Nationals. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. All right, first pitch coming up. And on the mound in this one, Jake Irvin and Singy. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game. I mean, you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s gotten this one. TJ Freedom, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Next pitch misses. And now 2 and 0. And a foul ball. Left-hand hitter waits. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and it falls. So a man on base to start the inning. Batting second. Second base. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Matt Mlan. gets the call. Strike one. Late swing fouled off. And that’s outside. It’s a ball in two strikes. Fredel gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Next one misses and that’s ball two. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Laro racing over to make the catch. Short stop. Here’s the lineup for the Reds. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton, and even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So, they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation, and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. Ellie Dea Cruz in the box now. No balls in a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. Breaking ball through there for a strike. Fights it off. You’ll see another swings and misses. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breeds a sigh relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. keep him off balance, get him out of there and deal with the next guy. And now it’s Austin Haynes. There’s the strike. And that one is inside ball one. Just missed. Two balls, one strike. That one fouled off. Two and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. misses and the count’s full. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Stays alive. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another grinding AB right here about to see pitch number 10 and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. So now two on and two outs. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. First and second, two outs. Steer the next to hit. And that’s a strike. Two aboard, two outs. And there’s a foul ball. Now this is in the air down the line. Lyle on his way over. Nabs it and that’ll do it. So they strand a pair. Now it’ll be Washington’s turn. It’s a scoreless ball game. Back here in Nationals Park towing the slab in today’s game, Graham Ashcraft. How about a report on him, Chris? Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. And he went around, says Ricky Holiday. Fouled off. He was late. Get out of here. And a swing and a miss at the slider in the dirt. Stevenson to first in time to get him. One away in the strikeout. You know, Boo, you often think of sliders more for that horizontal movement, but most of the good ones have both vertical depth and that horizontal movement. And that’s what we saw right there. Good drop on the break and got him to swing over the top. Here’s Nathaniel Low. And that one hit 97 on the gun. One out. Base is empty. Swinging a dribbler. Foul first base side. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. It’s a ball. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. You know, variant speeds can be just as useful for a pitcher as movement. As you see right there, it really wasn’t a great location, but the fact that the velocity change had the hitter off balance and that’s all you got to do sometimes. Josh Bell stands in now and watches strike one. Two outs. Base is empty. Let’s do it. Close but called a ball and a count even one and one. That clips the inside corner for a strike. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Struck him out swinging and he strikes out the side in the first. Three up, three down for Washington. Scoreless after one. Top of the second. Now it’s the DH Noelv Marte. Noelv Marte. Irvin back to work inside corner for a strike. Throwing one. Battling here as he fouls it away. Ground ball up the middle. sneaks through base head. So runner aboard to start the inning. I’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count. Too good of a pitch to hit right there. You have to expand the zone. Keep that leadoff man off first base. And now Tyler Stevenson right through there for a strike. Marte on at first. Nobody out. And that’s in there for a strike. And quickly nothing at two. I understand you want to try to gauge that guy’s fast, but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone. Now you’re in a tough spot. Here’s the O2. And that’s downstairs and outside. Nobody out. runner at first. Good eye right there. That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Base knock. Now a free pass. This has the makings of a big inning if they can get a couple more quality at bats. First and second, no outs. Santiago Espino the next to hit for the Reds. And that one fouled off. No outs. Runners at first and second and a count one and two. Ground ball left side and it’s just fouled. That was close. and a swing and a miss. And that is a big first out. Connor Joe the next to hit for the Reds. And that’s fouled off. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Swing in the m only two now. I think he was sitting off speed though. The O2 got him looking. That’s a strike out. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. You got three straight fast balls looking in the 02 count just to pour it back. TJ Fredle. Now here’s the Red’s leadoff man TJ Fredle. He’s one for one. Let off the game with a single to third house. And that is that. Two left on. We go to the bottom of inning number two. We’re tied nothing. Nothing back in Washington DC. Now it’s Paul Young up to the plate. Paul D Young. Come on. That one called the strike 0 and one, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Swings through that. Two really good backto-back sliders. Now at an 02 count, he’s feeling real confident about finishing this hitter off. He can go anywhere he wants. Making four strikeouts in a row. Just cruising along. No need to deviate from the slider right there. The hitter just not making the adjustment. He came at him with the breaking ball. Pitch after pitch in that at bat. And evidently there was no answer for it. And now it’s Luis Garcia. That’s towards center. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Batting six, third baseman, Brady House. Here’s the rookie third baseman, Brady House. There’s a strike. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. on the ground right side lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. He beats the throw and they catch a break as they get a base runner at first. Two outs, runner at first. Dalen Lyall digging in for the Nationals. in the air right field. He makes the grab and that is that. One hit, one left. We head on now to the top of the third. No score. Top half of the third inning in now for the Reds. Matt Mlan. Matt Mlan. Mlan measures 5’8 in batting second in today’s lineup. A former first round pick in 2021. Top of the zone for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Next offering is fouled back. Next one misses. One and two to count. Switch through that one. It’s a strike out. He came out of his mechanics there. typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little Ellie de la Cruz now at the plate. He’s a dynamic player. Yeah, Boo. The youngest player ever to hit 25 home runs and steal 60 bags. And you never know what he’s going to do next. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Right through there for a strike. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Good job to fight that one off. Got him. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Now the left fielder Austin Hayes worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. And that’s in there for strike one. Top of the third, no score. That one missing inside. And a fast ball misses outside for a ball. And it’s two and one. Next offering is fouled back. Two outs. Fouls it back with two strikes. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. Just couldn’t catch up. Swing at a highf fly ball to left call. And that is that home half of the third coming up. No score as we go to the last of the third. And now the catcher comes up to him. Riley Adams. Adams in for a strike. 0 and one. 0 and one. And that one upstairs. I got a ball. One strike. on the ground to first. He takes it on his own. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Batting ninth center fielder Jacob Young. So digging in, Jacob Young. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris and that misses off the outside edge. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball two. Close pitch there and he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. Fun off foul. Swing and a miss. And now two and two. Two balls, two strikes. Come on. And a foul ball. He stays alive. That’s too low and it’s a full count. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. 3-2 now. Gets a piece and stays alive. Well, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Three and two. The pitch is outside and ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that block after a long bat. So, the next lineup turns over. Here’s the left fielder, Alex Call. He’s 0 for one. And that one is lifted in the air. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two down. Now batting designated hitter Nathaniel Low. Nathaniel Low up to hit. Struck out swinging his first time. On the corner at the knees for a strike. Well, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. Young off of first with two away. Popped up foul territory behind the plate. Stevenson right there to make the grab and the inning is over. Nationals lead one. Still no score. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Spencer Steer. Come on, let’s go. looking good. Just off the inside edge. Well, these Reds just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. in the air left field down the line. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball just off the inside edge. Next offering is fouled back. There’s a high chopper. The Young throws to first in time. Leadoff hitter retired in the fourth. Now batting designated hitter Noel V Marte. Next is the designated hitter Noel V. Marte. One for one with a single so far. That one the other way. And foul ball. One down. Base is empty. Right through there for a strike. Ball one low. Really good take especially with two strikes. Two strikes. That one is hammered right field. That’s back. And it bangs off the out of town scoreboard. Marte headed for third. The relay throw pulls him off the bag and he’s safe. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. Just missed out on a home run right there, but he certainly hit it hard enough. Just didn’t have the right launch angle to carry it over the wall, but still an excellent swing of the bat. Now, let’s see if they can put up the first run of the game. Now at the plate, Tyler Stevenson walked his first time. Oh, and this one gets away. No advance though. One away with a runner at third. Swinging a miss. That’s strike one. Oh, that’s that slope right there. He threw it extremely well. Talk about just a ton of break. So tough to get that barrel to on the ground to third. Bear ball and they’ll score first. It’s one zip. Big swing of the bat right there to give him the lead. That was clutch. There’s something about pulling one down the line and shooting it through the infield that’s just so satisfying as a hitter. It’s just fun turning on a pitch like he did right there. One down, runner at first. Santiago Espino the next to hit for the Reds. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Man at first, one away. Late on that fast. Threw that fast right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Still two and two after the foul ball. Got him looking. And that’s sixks for him in this one. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. Really locked him up. And as a hitter, it’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in. So you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. Hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. Joe at the plate with two away. Swings through that one. One run across in the frame so far. Top half of inning number four. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. The one-1 is fouled off. Hammered down the line. Could be extra bases and that’s going to get into the corner. Stevenson around third. He will score. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. bat control right there. Got a pitch on the outside, saw it deep into the zone, and just barreled it up. Went the other way for the knock. So, back to the top of the Red’s lineup. TJ Fredel the next to hit for the Reds. One for two. There’s the strike. Joe on third with two out. Oh, and he hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Next for Cincinnati, Matt Mlan. Both two in this one. Pitch misses and that is ball one. Fast ball is outside. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. That’s inside. Ellie Dea Cruz up next for the Reds. And that’s in for a strike on the ground to the left. And that’s just foul. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Rips one to right. That’s a base hit as a run scores. Throw in holds that trail runner at third base. They’re at the corners with two away. Now, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Jake Irvin will depart and he had a tough time keeping them in the ball game today. We’ll get a new arm when we come back. Now pitching number 61 gets handed the rock out of the pen. Well, they didn’t get much length out of their starter in this one, so they’ve got a lot of outs to eat up in that bullpen. I think they’ll look for some length out of him right here if they can get it. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati, Ellie Dea Cruz, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Foul ball there. Right through there for a strike. Runners at the corners with two outs on the ground of first. It’s in and out of his glove. Still manages a throw. They don’t come much closer than that. Bang bang play to end the inning. Three runs for him here and they move ahead to the bottom of inning number four now. It’s the Reds three and the Nationals nothing. Ready to go. Bottom four. Josh Bell at the plate now. Josh Bell. Come on. Give it to him. The change up missing. One and0. And another ball. Two and0. Two. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Two-1 now. Ripped on the ground to second. Sends it to first. One up, one down. Now batting shortstop, Paul D Young. And now Paul D Young, he was a strikeout victim his first time. And that is downstairs. Ball one. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Next offering is in for a strike. That’s a little bit low. Foul ball grounds one to short. Dela Cruz already two gone here in the home fourth. Up next for the Nationals, second baseman Luis Garcia. Luis Garcia digging in for the Nationals. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Swanging a ball drilled center field. Corrals it and that’s the third out and welcome back to the ballpark. New inning getting started now. The left fielder Austin Hayes. First pitch just misses. Fast ball for a strike. One ball, two strikes. Swing and a little roller right side. Gets it to first. One away here in the fifth. Now batting first baseman Spencer Steer. And here’s the first baseman Spencer Steer. Misses off the play. And that’s ball one. Hard ground ball, base knock, and it hits the base. So, a man aboard now with one away. Everything came together for him. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. One gone runner at first. And now the designated hitter for the Reds, Noel V Marte. And that one is inside. Move to first and he’s back in easily. There goes the runner. Pitch in for a strike. And that’s a stolen base. Not even close. The one-1. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Next pitch is outside. Runner at second here. One gone. score. It’s a double. Third hit of the night for him. Back to back base hits. Anytime you can drive a ball into the gap the other way, it feels so good. And that’s when you know you’re right where you need to be at the plate. It’s even better when it gets you extra bases. Got to love looking in at your dugout and seeing your teammates fired up. One out, runner at second. Tyler Stevenson, the next to hit for the Reds. First pitch misses. 10 man at second and it’s fouled away. Up and in. two and one. When the skipper calls down to the bullpen, he’s expecting the guy to come in and get outs. So far, not getting what he was hoping for. That one misses and that’s ball three. And strike two. One out, a runner at second. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Stays alive. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. and a 3-2 and a pop off right side. Foul territory has room and he makes the catch. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Digging in, Santiago Espol. Right through there for a strike. Oh, and one. He swings and fouls one off. Man on second. Two down. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That’s off the inside corner. And the count one and two. Now it’s off his glove as the slider gets away from him. Probably ruled a pass ball as the runner moves up to third. back to the mound. He’s got it. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Runscoring double here for the Reds. It’s now a four nothing ball game. Back after this on the show. Back here in Nationals Park, bottom of the inning up now for Washington. Brady Housey House. Ashcraft back to work. There’s a strike. He’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Next offering is down low. You know, these Nationals, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game, and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. Swang and a miss. There’s that change up. Two strikes. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. You got this. Yeah, there’s a ball and a swing and a miss. Down on strikes now. Five strikeouts for him on the M. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death of two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate, you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Lyall in the box with one away as he takes ball one. The Reds leading by four. Last half of inning number five. just missed and one. Oh, he’s really working that inside corner with the cutter. I tell you what, I hated that pitch. So tough to get the barrel to and to keep it fair. line drive and that should be extra bases around first and hustling for second. Not stopping. He’s going for three. The relay throw. He’s in there. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Tried to get inside on him, but he was ready for it. Just kept his hands in and turned on the pitch. Quick bat with his own. It’ll be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. Now the Red’s manager is out of the dugout and will make a move to the pen. Graham Ashcraft departs and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Now pitching for Nick Martinez takes over on the mound. Still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpen has some work ahead of them. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Riley Adams digging in for the Nationals 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. Sliced down the right side. swing and a miss and he got him to chase. Action in the pen down there. Brent Sudter up and throwing for Terry Francona. Swing and a soft liner out to left field. He’s got it and there’s two away. Now batting the center fielder, Jacob Young. And now it’s going to be Jacob Young. He reached out to walk his first time. That one fouled off. Two outs. Check swing. Called strat. No ball. Two strikes up the middle. Dela Cruz on the run. Sends it over to first. What a play. Inning over. So one left for Washington. They trail it here. Four nothing. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Now it’s the right fielder Connor Joe and first offering is fouled off. Well, these Reds really impressed me with the quality of their at bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. Ran his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. Got him looking for the K. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Well, that’s great execution of the pitch right there and the battery working together. Catcher does a nice job to present that to the umpire and get that call. Third strike. So the batting order turns over in now for the Reds. TJ Fidel and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column, but with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming. This one high in the air to left center. call sizing this one up and there’s two down now batting second base Matt two out space is empty Matt Mlan now at the plate swing and a pop off in foul round. He’s got it. And that’ll end the inning. Three up, three down for him there. Top of the order, do up in the home half of the six. It’s the Reds four and the Nationals nothing. Bottom of the six. And now here’s the Nationals leadoff man, Alex Call. Alex. call goes 5′ 11 in 190 lb and he was a third round pick back in 2016. Flying drive and that’s a base hit out of the center field and the leadoff man aboard. Up next for the National. Here’s the DH for Washington. Nathaniel Low. Nathaniel Low. There’s the strike. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and heart of the order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get going. Next pitch is outside. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Late on that fast ball. One more call. Gets his lead at first with nobody out. And they’ll do it again. Let’s go. The one two and down on strikes he goes. And that’s the first out. Here’s Josh Bell. Now batting the first baseman, Josh Bell. That’s in for a strike. The Nationals down by four here in the bottom of the sixth. Yeah, a foul ball. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. bows that off to the left and will do it again. Lifted in the air left field pretty well struck. Hayes makes the grab. Two down. Now batting shortstop Paul D. Young. Now a chance for Paul D. Young. Let’s go. Come on. Yeah, the one ball up there. Lifted in the air right field. Joe getting an angle on it and that will end the inning. Nationals leave one. They’re on the short end of a four nothing score. Back in Washington DC, we go to the top of the seventh and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Ellie Dea Cruz and that is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. 01’s the count. And that one popped in the air left field call on the move to the gap and it’s caught for the out. Now batting left fielder Austin. So now here’s the Red’s cleanup hitter Austin Hayes. And the first pitch misses for ball one. base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. In the air to left center, Young on the move to the alley. They got it for out number two. Now batting the first baseman, Spitzer Steer. And now the first baseman, Spencer Steer, one for three. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Right through there for a strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. You’ve got to think to yourself, I want to stay up the middle. That way, if you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field, not two down, do and a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball and one, two, three go the Reds, but they’re in front nothing. And we’re back set for the last half of the seventh. Here’s the second base, Luis Garcia. Luis Garcia. And first offering is fouled off. ball inside. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. One ball, two strikes. That one just misses. He missed the zone, but I don’t think he missed his spot. That was a good pitch with two strikes. Breaking ball misses down and away. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Oh, looking for a swinging miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. Now the third baseman, Brady House. And that one fouled off. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. And that’ll fall for a base hit. And now to a board. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Next to hit for the Nats, Dalon Lyle. Come on. Just missed. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Brent Sudter up and throwing for Terry Francona. Mole getting loose as well. First and second, no outs here. The bottom of the seventh on the ground to third might be two. Boops it. Still finds a way to get off a throw. The throw comes in too late and the defense comes away with nothing. Man, I was expecting 543 double play off the bat, but I think he just tried to be a little too quick there. Especially when you think it’s a pretty routine ball to handle. It’s really easy to think ahead to the transfer and the throw before you actually bring it into your glove. And here is Riley Adams in there for strike one. The tying run at the plate and that is out of play. You need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup something. But you’ve got to make some pitches. But if he can battle and get through this, he can earn some points. Garcia the runner at third. House on second. Lyall at first with no outs. Just misses there. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. One runs in. Here comes the throw and he’s out. Look at that. The base runner did a great job of making that a close play at the plate with an excellent slide. Made the catcher work to get out there and put down the tag. The throw was on the money and that’s what made the difference. Big time play to cut down a run. Now the Red’s manager is out of the dugout and will make a move to the pen. Nick Martinez done for the night. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Now pitching for pitching for the Reds, Sam. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. And here is Jacob Young. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. And that one fouled off. One out. Runners at first and second. And that one a little below the knees. And now it’s even one and one. Highf fly ball out towards left center. Out number two. Now batting left fielder Alex. So up next, Alex Call. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Two on, two outs. Ground ball right side down the line and it’s fouled. There’s a 1-1. Just missed. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. Good job to fight that one off. That missed by a lot. And it’s three and two. Nathaniel Low in the on deck circle for the Nets. Tying run at the plate now. A pop up on the infield. Steer under it. Drops into the glove. That is the inning. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Reds four and the Nats one. Now pitching for welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Andre Lara just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. And now the DH Noel V Mart. He’s got a single, a double, and a triple in this game. A home run gets him the cycle. And that’s off the inside edge. And it’s one and0. Swinging a foul. Pushed off to the right. And that will get out of play. Two. One. Pitch misses there. They’re now three and one. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. And here’s the catcher, Tyler Stevenson. And ball one movement in the bullpen. Andrew Chaffen looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Parker warming up as well. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. DC line drive caught. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Next for Cincinnati, Santiago Espol for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Just missed. That two seam fast ball is usually coupled with a slider away. And when a hitter’s conscious of the pitch in, it’s hard for him to cover middle away. And that’s where a pitcher can really finish off that batter. Checks over to first, back safely. Fast ball is outside. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Swinging a foul out of play. Runner on the move. Swing and a miss. Throw to second. Ow. Well, I think that was a hit and run right there. When you look at how far that pitch was out of the zone and the hitter still trying to put wood on it, put it in play, that tells you that they had something going. But unfortunately, it was a good job of execution by the pitcher and the catcher to get that out of the zone and then throw out the runner at second base. Really nice job behind the dish. Two down, nobody on and we’re in the top of the eighth. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. That one misses and now it’s three and two. swing and a popup. Bell under it, makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. Nobody left for Cincinnati, but they lead it four to one. onto the bottom of the eighth. Now the number two hitter Nathaniel Nathaniel. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Next offering upstairs. Next offering is fouled back. Come on, let’s go. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Goes down swinging for the strike out. Tied him up on a fast ball inside. And now the switch in first baseman Josh Bell 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. And first offering is fouled off. Swings and misses. Went with the sweeper. Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. Off the mark there and the count is one and two. Next offering is outside. Lefty continues to work but the closer getting loose in the bullpen. Next offering misses down and away. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Grinding AB right here. About to see pitch number 10. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. All right, here we go. And a foul ball. He stays alive. battling here as he fouls it away. The Nets trailing by three here near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Sam Mole won’t go any further. And as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Taylor Rogers into the game coming on to face a righty here. He’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. One down and next will be the cleanup hitter Paul de Young. 0 for three in this one. Let’s go DC. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Let’s go. Next offering way off the plate. Bell leads off first with one away. Swing and a miss. One ball, two strikes. swings and miss has struck him out. Now that is now here is Luis Garcia. Luis Garcia. Here’s a runcoring opportunity. You definitely got to push something across because it’s not going to get any easier. You get to the ninth, get a lock down closer ready to come in that one inside. And that’s ball one. Right through there for a strike. The other way. brings it in for the third out. So, one left for Washington and they trail it 4-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. And the batter now, Conor Joe. Lara back to work. There’s the strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Popped up. House hauls it in and there’s one away. Oh, that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there. I mean, that pitch was right down the middle. I think he got a little too excited. Came out of his mechanics and instead of driving that ball somewhere, he popped it up. Unfortunate for him. And first off, Ring is fouled off. Lara in his rookie season. He features a two seam fast ball, a slider, and he works in a change up just off the outside edge and one and one. And now a little barking back towards the umpire. clearly thought he got that outside corner on what was a pretty big pitch. Sometimes that only makes it worse for you moving forward, but it can also open up that location in the future. But the umpire thinks there’s a chance that he missed it. Luke behind second and that will fall. Hitting is really easy for some guys. It’s one thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. And he’ll one just missed. That missed inside. Two and one. And that’s in there at the knees. line draft to short and caught. Nice swing and good solid contact up smoke but needed a little more lift to get into the outfield gap. Maybe a little more back spin. Ellie Dea Cruz getting ready to hit. This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport. They say you win. All one’s the count. The short stop takes a ball. misses inside and a count. Two on one. Pulls that one foul. stays alive off the plate inside. Ball three and ball four to a board. A great back and forth in that at bat. play some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. First and second, two outs. Austin Hayes, the next to hit for the Reds. First pitch and he just misses. Well, he’s already in some trouble and falling behind in the count makes it even worse. Then you’ve got to throw the ball over more of the plate and that’s where they can really do damage against a guy like this. And a foul ball. Fredel the lead runner at second. Dela Cruz at first. Two out of the inning. So a foul ball makes it one and two. He’s bagging. Give me that pitch one more time. A hanging change up just out in front. A one two. That one to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. No runs, a hit, two left. 678 scheduled to start the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Reds four and the Nats won back now. And on the mound, a closer Emilio Pagan. I can’t imagine any save is an easy one. You’re holding a small lead on the scoreboard and you know those hitters are going to give you the best advance they can. So it’s always high stress. Let’s see what he’s got here to try and close it out. House at the plate and takes high there at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Big bat right here. He did the team thing. Took until he got a strike. Now he’s got to go to work. Shorten up that swing a little bit. Do whatever it takes to get on base. The one-1 is fouled off. Got him looking and he did not like the call. Well, the first batter, it’s always a big one for the closer. I mean, you get that punch out, you get settled in, you feel like you’re in command out there on the mound from the jump and kind of prevents any doubt from creeping into your mind or the fielders that are playing behind you that you know you’re going to wrap this thing up. Swinging a foul straight back. Just missed. Base is empty. One away. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. And that one is downstairs. Two and one. Two balls, one strike. Next offering is fouled back. 2-2 now. And they’ll do it again. The Reds trying to close out a three-run lead here in the last half of inning number nine. swing going to miss. Struck him out. Down to the last out for the Nationals. No, it’s kind of tough right here. Closer comes in and he strikes out the first two hitters. It’s hard not to feel defeated and then this is going to go quickly, but you got to go up there maybe trying to find a way to choke up on the bat. Spread out. Put the ball in play and maybe you can extend this inning. Adams in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Next pitch misses inside. One ball, one strike. Swings with a fast ball up in the zone. One ball, two strikes. The Nationals down to their final strike. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another swing and a miss. Struck him out. And that is the ball game. Another outing, another save. That’s his 20th of the season. And this was a good example of why they rely on him so heavily in these close games. 4-1 the final here today for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon. What the heat?
