MLB LIVE🔴 Detroit Tigers vs Pittsburgh Pirates – Jul 23, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

Welcome everyone to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and gorgeous PNC Park. MLB the show has inner league action for you this afternoon. It’s the Detroit Tigers going up against the Pittsburgh Pirates with my partner Chris Singleton. I’m John Shami. Well, Singi, when you consider the most gorgeous ballparks in the sport, this one right here, PNC and Pittsburgh, one of the best in the game and from where we sit, just a gorgeous view of downtown. You’ve got the bridges, the Alagany River. In fact, we’ve seen some hitters hit the ball into that river and perhaps we’ll see that today. First pitch coming your way next. So, almost ready to get underway. pitching in our game today, Mike Burroughs. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. A lot more guys striking out today, but when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. and he’s got it in the air left field. Fan under it. And there’s one away. Let’s take a check to the Tigers lineup. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus, Zack McKinstry. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Glabber Torres the next to hit takes ball one. And there’s a foul ball. Knee high. That’s in for a strike. See if you can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. And that skips in the dirt. Three and two. Ground ball right side. Gonzalez onto first and Glaver Torres retired. Batting third, right fielder Wel Perez. Two down, base is empty. Wel Perez now at the plate. Definitely scuffling at the dish lately. Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month. dives, but it kicks off his glove. He beats the throw and they catch a break as they get a base runner at first. Waste no time there. That’s one of those you classify as just too hot to handle. Hit it on the screws and it couldn’t be fielded cleanly, but you can’t really blame the defense in that case. Man, at first here’s Riley Green. It’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate under the Mendoza line so far this month. Swing and a miss. Strike one. No, one strike. Two outs. That’s in there. 0 and two. Swigs through that one. It’s a strike out. Tigers leave one. And now the Pirates will get their first opportunity. No score. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here at PNC Park and on the hill here today, Brennan Hanny and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure. He’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball. But for some reason, he gets looser. The ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Tommy Fan, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Next pitch is downstairs. Two balls, no strike. Swang and a ball lifted in the air and it falls. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. I don’t know how he was able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Here’s McCutchen in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Fan on at first. Nobody out. Let’s go. Cut. One and two in the dirt. The pitch to McCutchen upstairs. Now two and two. cuts goes down via the K. Brian Reynolds here that misses the zone and that is ball one. shoots a line drive single into right center. Throw into third and the throw’s offline. Safe at third. Hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Runners at the corners here. One away. Gonzalez will hit next on the ground. Two ball. There’s one. What a double play that was. Inning over. We head to the second from PNC Park. No score. New inning getting started. And here’s the first baseman, Spencer Torlson. Burrows back to work right through there for a strike. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Clyde Washington with home plate duties in this one. Little bit of a low zone booth from Clyde. Nothing crazy though. pitchers that work consistently down around the knees and are able to command their off speed stuff tend to have some pretty good success with him back there behind the plate. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Just missed. Excellent arm action on that two strike change up. Just missed. Man, he wanted that call. That one missed. He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. That one misses. Ball three. Two strikes. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. So takes the win. Just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there. Not much to it. And I’m sure he’d love another swing at it because it was in a very hitable location. Those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say, “How’d I miss that?” But you know what happens. And next up for the Tigers, Zack McKinstry. Fast for a strike. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Good pitch right there. Tied him up on the hands. If I’m out there on the bump, I’m going right back in there. That missed by a lot. And that’s ball one. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. Fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. Backto back strikeouts to start the frame. And that’s now three in a row. Yeah, he’s really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches, throwing them where he wants to right now. So, we’ll see how long he can keep this streak going. Stepping in, Parker Meadows, and it stays fair. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he starts his afternoon off right with a double. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Runner in scoring position now. And a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Now, here’s the Detroit catcher, Jake Rogers. Swang at a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. The run comes in to score from second. He’s in there. Always feels good when you come through and get your team on the board first. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. So, runner at second, two down. Trey Sweeney up now for the Tigers. Cut on and lifted in the air. Touch is down. That’s a hit. Run comes in from second and it’s an RBI single and they lead by two. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. put a pretty good jolt into that one. Great swing, nice balance and weight transfer, and he got it to drop in out there in the deep part of the field. Colt Heath getting ready to hit. First pitch misses. Sweeney off of first with two away. Pickoff throw. Ow. They got him. And that will end the inning. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Tigers two and the Pirates nothing. Bottom of the inning at the plate for Pittsburgh. O’Neal Cruz. O’Neal Cruz. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw. And he reaches safely. Now batting key Brian Hayes singing he’s never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire career. There’s the strike of the knees. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. The next pitch misses and it’s one and one. Nobody out. Runner of first. up in and in two and one. That’s towards center. Meadows under it and there’s one down. Batting seventh. First baseman Spencer Horowitz. And now the first baseman Spencer Horowitz. Come on Spencer. Moved first. And he dives back in safely. And a foul ball. Ball one low. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a rollover something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. The pitch. That one finds the zone and the count one and two. And there’s a ball man at first. One away. Double play ball to second. They put the tag on him. Their second double play already. This one ends the second inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. We head on now to the top of the third. It’s the Tigers two and the Pirates nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now the third baseman, Colton Keith. Keith measures 6’2 in 210 lb and he was a fifthround pick in 2020. And that’s in for a strike. Go and one. And that’s through there for a strike. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. And that’s in the dirt. One and two. And that skips in the dirt. That misses the zone and it’s a full count. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. gets a piece and stays alive. Swings and miss has struck him out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Here’s Glabber Torres. He’s over for one. Come on, you can do it, Pirates. Let’s go. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. No, that’s a ball. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. In this situation, ahead 200, he’s put himself in a really good spot. One down, base is empty. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Well, they came right at him right there, challenged him with the 200 fast ball. Not sure exactly what he was looking for, but got to imagine that’s a confidence booster on the mound. You’re in that hitter’s head a little bit. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Tasked with one, two, and three to start this inning, but no trouble so far. I’m sure he’d love to strike out the side here. Make a little statement, but you got to be composed in this spot. Focus on getting this next guy. You got two good outs. Want to get the third one and avoid the middle of that lineup coming up with a base runner. Could become dangerous. Two outs. Base is empty. Wel Perez up now for the Tigers. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One and0. Two out. Space is empty. on the ground right side and foul ball. The 2-1 and that one is inside. Riley Green waiting to hit for Detroit. And the right-handers 3-1. Right side hard hit. Horowitz takes it to the bag and it’s a one two3 inning. Tigers fail to make any noise as they’re unable to add to their two nothing lead. And we’re back set for the bottom of the third. And here’s the catcher, Henry Davis. Davis, Henry. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. Fought off foul. Next offering miss is down and away. Pitch misses. Two balls, two strikes. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death. two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate, you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Here is Isaiah Ker Fa. And that one inside and it hit him first base. Well, this has the potential to fire up the offense. Only one out and now a base runner on first. You got to stay out of a double play if you’re going to make something happen here. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. That’s back to back singles for him. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. She didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. First and second, one out. And next is the designated hitter, Andrew McCutchen. Fouled off. He was late. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Connor Falefa at second. fan over first of one away. Throw back in. Holds the runner at third. Base is now loaded. Only one away. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. Nice job going the opposite way with it, letting the ball travel and not allowing the barrel to hook around the ball. It’s so frustrating when you see a good pitch and your hands roll over. It was on the outside part of the plate and he approached it perfectly. The batter now, Ryan Reynolds right through there for a strike. All loaded up here in the last half of the third. And that’s fouled off. That one missing inside. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Got him swinging for the strike out, but no advance from the runners. Although I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still laid on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Nick Gonzalez, the next pirate to hit. Yeah, don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score two. And the first pitch misses for ball one. So, they’re all loaded up with two outs. swing and a miss. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. That’s a strike. And he inches closer to getting out of the jam. way inside. Gets out of the way. Straighten him up a little bit. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Base is loaded. Two down. got him swinging a lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Back here in Pittsburgh, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Riley Green. Let’s win. Come on. Come on. Hard hit right side. Gonzalez to first in time. One up. One down. He’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. And here’s the first baseman, Spencer Torqulson. He’s 0 for one. Pirates. Just missed. One out. Base is empty. That one fouled off. That one drilled left field and it one hops the wall. Now he’ll turn for second and that’s a double. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Next to the plate is the Tigers DH, Zack McKinstry, and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. One out and a runner at second. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. Lifted in the air right center field. Reynolds settles under it and makes the catch. Two away. Now batting the center fielder, Parker Meadows. So digging in, Parker Meadows doubled in his first AB. Singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. missed inside with the curve. So, how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat, he thinks this ball’s going to get down because of that speed and the ability to tosses across the first and that is the inning. One left for Detroit, but they’re on top two nothing. Back here at PNC Park, here’s the center fielder, O’Neal Cruz. O’Neal Cruz. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boo, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. And he can’t come up with it. And he’s going to make it to first. and we’ll see how they score. Pretty much gifted a lead off base runner right there. And as an offense, this is where you really want to take advantage. Apply some pressure this inning. Make that error hurt. So, next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Kee Ryan Hayes 0 for one with a fly out to center on the ground to first. Could be two. There’s one back to first. Double play 363. Nicely done. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play, and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. Up next for the Pirates, Spencer Horowitz. And he grounds one to the right side. Oh, great stop. What a play. Inning over. Excellent stop right there. He wants to take it himself. Waves the pitcher off and continues to run into the dugout. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the catcher comes up to him, Jake Rogers. All right. Burrows back to work. No, that’s high. In for a strike and a count even one and one. This guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Pitch misses and it’s two and one. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. doesn’t want to make another mistake. Come on, Pirates. And that’s way high. Three and one now. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. The 3-1 in for a strike. Full count. Okay. stays alive. Fouled off again and it remains three and two and down on strikes. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Well, pitchers have become so much better at commanding that high fast ball. It used to be that a lot of pitchers didn’t like to throw it because it throw off their release point and their mechanics and they’re aimed at keeping everything at the knees, get ground balls, but because hitters get a swing path that can lift balls at the knees up in the air and over the fence, this pitch has come back into play and they are doing some special things with it. And another ball That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Foul ball. He’s mixing his pitches really well. Late on that fast ball after seeing the change up. See if he can elevate one. I think if he does, he’ll get the swing and miss. This one popped up. Hayes under it and there’s two down. Now batting third baseman Colt Keith. Back to the top of the lineup. And here’s the Tiger leadoff man, Colt Keith. Bowl for two in this one. That one pushed to the left and fouled a little out front there as he swings through it quickly in an 02 count. You got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in place somewhere. Then you got a chance. One ball two strike. the one two and that one upstairs. That’s a little bit low. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Ripped to third but handled and that’ll end the inning. Offense held in check there. Last half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Tigers two and the Pirates nothing. And we’re back ready to go for the last half of the inning. And the batter now, Henry Davis. Davis. First pitch just misses. You know, these Pirates finding ways to get on base, but they still need help driving them home. Runners left on base really comes down to timing. Can you put together your best at bats in the most important moments? That’s a difference maker. They’ve stranded a lot of runners on base in this game. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Connor Falefa batting with one down. Takes the strike. Ground ball left side. Throw on to Torqulson and that quickly two away. Now batting left fielder Tommy. So the batting order turns over and now the Pirates lead off man Tommy Fam. He’s two for two. Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field and it falls and that keeps the inning going. Well, he’s been working out of the stretch just about the entire game. Boo. lot of base runners on against him and he’s just done a really nice job of scattering the hits, not giving up any runs, but at some point your luck usually runs out. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit. One for two. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back there. manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Brennan Hanny out of the game and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this now pitching for. So out of the pen comes the rightander. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. So two down now it’s the switch hitting outfielder Brian Reynolds. First pitch misses And another ball. Fam on third. McCutchen on at second with two down. The 20 is in for a strike. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. Check swing called strike. Battling here as he fouls it away. Two on, two outs. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. And he hits a ground ball right side. Torres fires over to first. Third out. Nicely done from the Tigers bullpen. There we’re through five. It’s the Tigers two and the Pirates nothing. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Andrew Heeney, and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Here’s Glamour Torres. Off with the Tigers. Second base Torres. Check swing called strike 0 and one activity in Pittsburgh’s bullpen. David Bednar loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. A one down and that one fouled off. Looked like you got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, want to stay up the middle that way if you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. Little late. Opposite field. Not foul ball. Still 0 and2. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Bell just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Perez in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. just missed. There’s the strike and the count is three and one and it’s fouled away. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. Man at first with one gone. And up next for Detroit, Riley Green. that misses the zone and it’s one and0. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. Now one going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. swings and pulls a foul to the right side. Popped up middle of the diamond. Connor Falefa makes the catch for the out. So up next, Spencer Torqulson. And the first pitch misses for ball. Just off the inside edge. Two balls. No strike. In there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. And that’s downstairs and outside. Three in one. Pirates. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it. Foul ball and it remains a full count. And they’ll do it again to second and he’s out and the inning is over. Three up, three down for him there. To the bottom of the six we go. 456 coming up. It’s the Tigers two and the Pirates nothing. Back here in Pittsburgh, we go bottom six. Here’s the second baseman, Nick Gonzalez. Gonzalez. That one ripped and foul ball. Olsson in his second season. He features a slider, a fourseamer, a change up, a sinker, and he occasionally uses a curve. Perez settles underneath it, hauls it in, and there’s one away. Up next for the Pirates, center fielder. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. Cruz. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. Guy hammers that one. Curling down the line and fouled. Clearly hoping he could get a swing and miss on that, but doesn’t pull the hitter with that breaking ball. Nice job. Just couldn’t keep it fair. He goes down looking. Well, that’s a pitch. that slider from an opposite-handed pitcher that you usually see very well, but for some reason he didn’t pick it up and it just kind of got into the strike zone late. Gave up on it a little bit early. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Perez makes the catch and over. No runs, no hits, no errors. We’re through six full. It’s the Tigers two and the Pirates nothing. Now pitching righty reliever out of the pen, David Bednar. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. At the plate, Spencer Tolson. First baseman Spencer Torlson. check swing on the first pitch. Appeal down to first and that’s going to be ruled a swing. Swang and a miss. Look, it looked like that curveball backed up on him. And although it’s a mistake, it works out really good for the pitcher. The hitters timed it up, expects it to be to a certain spot and it just doesn’t get there. And ball one, struck him out looking. That was pretty nasty. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. Really locked him up. And as a hitter, it’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in. So, you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. Hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. And here is Zack McKinstreing a miss as he was late that time. One down. Base is empty. Foul ball there. Come on, you can do it. And a swing and a miss. Coming out of the bullpen throwing bees. Chance to strike out the side. Now, you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves, knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Meadows in the box again, takes a strike. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. And a foul ball. Next one misses and the count is one and two. Oh, too curved right there. Hitter kind of expects that. And good job of just showing that confidence and trying to get back into this count. Just misses with that one. two two and that is downstairs. They’re now three and two. Swing and a miss and he strikes out the side in the seven. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. Midway in inning number seven, and it’s time to stretch. It’s the Tigers two and the Pirates nothing. Now, pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Carlos Hernandez. Carlos Hernandez. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Now it’s going to be Spencer Horowitz. Well, these fans definitely want to get involved in the game. All it’s going to take is to get the leadoff man or even a base runner on fast for a strike. One strike and that one fouled off. And a base hit and a good start to the inning. I’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count. Too good of a pitch to hit right there. You have to expand the zone. Keep that leadoff man off first base. Henry Davis. the next pirate to hit. That’s in there. Strike one. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. The tying run at the plate. Oh, movement in the bullpen. Tyler Holton getting loose for AJ Hinch. Tying run at the plate and a count one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and one out now. Well, one of the things that hitters will do is they’ll look for that red dot on the baseball as is coming in to let them know what the pitch is. And if they see the red dot, it’s typically a slider. But when a guy’s got a really tight one with high spin rates, very difficult to determine. And that’s probably why we saw a swing and miss right there. Just a nasty pitch. Isaiah Kinder Fippa up to the plate. Run around the goal. Fouled off down the right side. Not close with that one. And one and one with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom of the seventh. Ruer goes again. Swing and a miss. One ball throw. They got him. Very questionable steel attempt right there. You’re down by two runs. Tying runs at the plate. Your run is so important. You have to be smarter than that. They can’t be playing around in this situation. Trust the guy at the plate with one swing to tie it up. That right there could be very costly. That misses and the count is even. Two and two. Well, as good as things can be, it can be a tough day at the office, even for the skippers, seeing the offense just sputter, not able to get anything going. Two down. Nobody on swinging a high-fly ball right field. Hauls it in to end the inning. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Caleb Ferguson. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Jake Rogers. Rogers stands in now. Looks at that one inside. And that misses and the count is two and0. Come on, you can do it. Let’s go. No. And there’s the automatic lined and that’s a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Now batting shorts stop Trey Sweeney. Trey Sweeney digs in now. in there for strike one. Oh, and one And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Rogers gets his lead at first with nobody out. One and two. Sit him down. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another strike out. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Here’s the third baseman. Colton Keith 0 for three in this one. And first offering is fouled off just off the inside edge. in the air right side and he makes the catch and there’s two down. Clayber Torres up to hit 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. That’s down and in. hammers that one deep left field and forget it. And they boost their lead. It’s 4 nothing. So, Singy, this is a little bit of a surprise. A guy known for line drives hits one over the fence. Well, if you’re a little too early, you’ll get some elevation in the ball to get out of the ballpark. For him, it’s kind of a mistake, but you know what? When you have such a good approach, every now and then you’re going to run into one. Base is empty with two away. Wel Perez the next to hit. That misses. Ball one. And another ball. just missed. Riley Green up next for the Tigers. Splits the plate. Three and one. Next offering is fouled back. Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. keeps the attack going with a foul ball. Got it. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now a four nothing ball game. back after this on the show. Back here at PNC Park, bottom of the eighth. Here’s Tommy Fam. The Pirates in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Hernandez back to work right through there for a strike. And there’s a foul ball. Next offering upstairs. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. I don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Fights that one away. Still one and two. And that’s outside. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Next offering is downstairs. Well, he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact. Fights it off. You’ll see another good job to fight that one off on the ground right side. Torres throws to first. That was a strong at bat even though he couldn’t find a way on base. The designated hitter, Andrew McCen. And now it’s Andrew McCutchen. That one outside. One and0. The Pirates down by four here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Pitch misses there and the countdown two and nothing. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. Just couldn’t catch up. One down. Base is empty. That one fouled off. Two and two inside. Just missed. Oh, he never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. Ryan Reynolds. The next pirate to hit one for three. Reynolds and first offering is fouled off. Come on. Two outs. That misses. And now it’s even one and one. One ball, one strike. That’s out to center field. Meadows moving under it. Squeezes it. And that is the third out of the inning. Now pitching. They hand the ball over to a new arm, Carmen Majinski. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year, and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Now, here’s the Tigers cleanup hitter, Riley Green. Riley Green cracks his bat and pops him up. Hayes calls it in and there’s one away. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. So digging in, Spencer Torqulson. With this kind of lead, he can swing freely, try to hit the ball out of the park, do what he loves to do. And first offering is fouled off. Machinski a 6’2 righty 220 lbs and he was a second round pick in 2020. And the slider catches the zone. Action in the pen down there. Henness Cabrera the left-hander up and throwing. Ramirez the right-hander loosening up as well. Base is empty. One away here in the top of the ninth. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. That one missed. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. One down. Base is empty. And there’s a ball. Swag. The velocity blasted it right past him. Next to hit, Zack McKinstry. Struck out on just three pitches last time. And that one is lifted in the air. Throws to second, but he’s in there easily. Now batting center fielder Parker Meadows. Parker Meadows up now for the Tigers. There’s the strike. One strike, two outs, and one in scored position. He swings and fouls one off. Man on second, two down. Good eye right there. Just missed with a good breaking ball in. Looking for that hitter to chase and perhaps get some weak contact or swing and miss. Good job on both sides. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. McKinstre at second with two down. Ground ball scooped up. Key Brian Hayes. gays to first and that is that. So no runs, no hits and one error, but they leave him stranded onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up Tigers four and the Pirates nothing. Now pitching for now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Too he pitched two days ago. Nick Gonzalez now at the plate. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Gonzalez. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. looked like it was a little bit up and that is out of play. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When he elevates, guys aren’t touched it. In the air, right field, Perez, he makes the grab and there’s one away. Now batting center fielder O’Neal. He’s two outs away. O’Neal Cruz will hit next. Just missed. Running that good fast ball up on the hitters inside. If nothing else, it keeps him from diving out over the plate to get those arms extended on the pitch away. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting. So it’s their last chance in this one. Brian Hayes digs in now. 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. That one at the knees for a strike. Next offering is fouled back. Scooble is just one strike away. Hit to right and that should do it. And that’ll do it. But when you’re on a sevengame losing streak, you’ve been both bad and unlucky. This win will be their reset button. I think now all of a sudden the ball will start to bounce their way and before you know it, they’ll be getting those breaks and the other team will go home frustrated. A four nothing shut out in this one. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon. What the heat?
