MLB LIVE🔴 Chicago Cubs vs Kansas City Royals – Jul 23, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

Alongside my partner Chris Singleton, I’m John Shiy. Thanks for joining us here. Well, singy, we’re getting some rain right now leading up to first pitch, but we’re told it should pass through. The barometric pressure is rising and it’s expected to clear up as the game progresses. You always wonder as a player when you got some dark skies and some rain pregame, but when somebody tells you, “Hey, it’s going to pass through and clear out,” it gets you right back on track where you need to be mentally. It’s the Kansas City Royals and the Chicago Cubs. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about set to go. And now here’s the starter for the Cubs, Colin Ray. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s gotten this one. Jonathan India the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one. First pitch 120 and downstairs. down. And here it comes. And that’s in there at the knees. [Applause] Fouls one off. Two at two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. He hasn’t gotten the result yet, but he’s got to feel pretty confident. Three foul balls in a row. He’s right on this pitcher. Pitch misses there. Full countdown and a foul ball. He stays alive. [Applause] [Music] back up the middle and a base hit. So, he gets a hit after a long battle with the pitcher. Batting second, the short stop. Now, here’s Bobby Whit Jr. Third base playing on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bunt. Here’s the pitch. Runner goes the other way and that’s just fouled. India gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Ray throws over. India dives back in safely. You know, Boo, this is a player with some serious speed. In 2023, he became the first player in 20 years to record two infield hits and an inside the park home run in the same game. That one back up the middle and it gets through. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. Tied in on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. [Applause] First and second, no outs. And now the first baseman, Benny Pasquantino, [Applause] checks his swing. Now an appeal to third. No swing. Just held it back there. No outs. Runners at first and second. [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] One, two now. Good eye in that spot, man. Oh, man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Slow ground ball to the right side. Push. tossed the second on the first out. Double play. Just got it there in time. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play, and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. And here is Mike El Garcia. That’s in for a strike. Come on. Swing and a tapper. Fires over to first. They don’t come much closer than that bang bang play to end the inning. Royals leave one and now it’ll be the Cubs turn in a scoreless ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. [Applause] Back here at Wrigley Field and towing the slab in this one, Michael Waka. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. Bottom of the first and now Michael Bush [Applause] Justice [Applause] [Music] and that one hammered back there. See you later. And they jump out front. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. There was a sinker up in the zone. It looked like it came out of the pitcher’s hand a little bit too early. Doesn’t have the velocity that that good for seam fast does. And at the plate, he didn’t miss it. So, here’s Kyle Tucker. Now, this is another guy capable of hitting tape measure home runs. And that is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. [Applause] With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. [Applause] [Music] Struck him out looking. [Applause] Seya Suzuki the next Cub to hit. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. Inside just missed [Applause] in the dirt. And it’s two and 0. Well, he gave up the home run earlier in this inning. Not pitching as aggressively here. The next offering misses. And that’s ball three. One out. Base is empty. [Applause] Hammered down the right side, but foul and fires in a fast ball at 95. That’s a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Applause] Stays alive. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Oh, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still late on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Two down. Do on. No, that missed. That’s a ball. Two balls. No strikes. That one ran inside. Almost got him. Two outs. Base is empty. There’s a strike. Take it all the way on three 0 right there. And as a hitter, you’re saying, “Why couldn’t I get that pitch earlier in the count when I’m looking to swing?” [Music] Two outs. Battling here as he fouls it away. Pasquentino steps on the bag, pingpongs around a bit, but they get the out and that ends the inning. Cubs draw first blood on this solo homer. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here at the friendly confines and now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. Perez. Ray back to work. Right side whips it to first. One up, one down. [Applause] 96. The left fielder, Nick Loftton. Nick Loftton getting ready to hit. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] Fly ball down the line and that is a foul ball. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Next offering is outside. [Music] And that’s downstairs. And it’s two and two. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. Gets a piece and stays alive. One down. Base is empty. Swings through and for the K. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count off. Two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Freddy Fine steps in for the Royals. Strike one. Here we go, puppies. Two down. Nobody on. That one just misses. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. Foul ball still a one and two count. Two outs. That’s a ball. Two and two. [Music] Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. Zoe gets on base and keeps it going. Batting the designated hitter, John. And next up for the Royals, John Rae. Let’s go up and in. And that is ball one. Lifted in the air down the left side. Pat rings it in. And that is that. So one left for Kansas City and it remains one- nothing here at Wrigley Field. We head to the bottom of the second half up to 10. And that one missing low. That’s a ball. Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. And that one is popped in the air. Shallow center with one away. Batting six, the shorts stop. Gansby Dby Swanson stands in. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond. And this guy is at the top of the list. That one catches the zone. That’s strike one. Yeah, we go beyond just the, you know, fielding percentage and, you know, what it looks like, but the ability to have a range and, you know, close holes that, you know, are normally there against an average defender, but this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness in the dirt. One and two, the cow. Hugan, the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics. But the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. Had a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Two down. Base is empty. Here’s Nicoer. And that one popped in the air left field. Loftton has a beat on it. And he can’t quite get there. It’s a foul ball. The 01 right through there for a strike. And Chris, beyond the fact that he’s so incredible defensively, he also can swing the stick. And that’s in the dirt. One ball, two strikes. swinging a ground ball. Makes a sliding stop to first. Safe at first and an infield single keeps the inning going. The two outs, you just want to find a way to keep the line moving for the next guy. So, an infield single right there does the job. Nicely done. Just putting it in play and getting down to first to keep this inning alive. You never know what might come next as a result. And the batter now is Reese Maguire. Reese in the air right field. Perez makes the grab and that is that. One left for the Cubs, but they lead it one to nothing. All set for the start of the inning. And now number two, number two, Tyler Tolberg. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. [Applause] And that skips in the dirt. One- one. Nice grab. Wow, that was an awesome leaping catch. Great reactions, great athleticism, man. He snatched that thing out of the air and he robbed him of a base hit. So, the lineup flips over. Jonathan Indie at the plate. One for one with a single so far. And that’s through their first strike. 0 and one. India getting the start at second. 28 years old. And they went out and made a trade for him last season. Swing and a miss. Old two. No ball. Two strikes. One down, base is empty. Foul ball still 0 and two. [Applause] And that one. That’s down. Cutting but missing down low. That one in Derek. It’s two and two. That’s down and in. [Music] He swings and drives one out to deep left field. That’s back and caught on the warning track. Up next for the Warriors down the number two hitter Bobby Whit Jr. and he’s already singled in this game. [Applause] clips the corner and it’s 0 and one. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. The 1-1 is fouled off. bows it off. Still one and two. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. And now two and two. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Swaying at a ball popped in the air that gets down for a hit. And with the inning still alive, here comes the heart of the order. Couple of hits in a row for him here. You can’t do much better than that on a pitch that far outside of the strike zone. Got him to chase on the two strike count, but he wasn’t fooled. He hit that ball really well. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Now here is Vinnie Pasquantino. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. And welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the last of the third. Now at the plate, Vidal Bruhan right through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. [Music] way outside and it’s one and one. [Music] That’s the ball. 2-1. [Applause] Shut the ball. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. [Music] [Applause] [Music] That one misses. So a lead off walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. back to the leadoff spot in the Cubs lineup. So up now for Chicago, Michael Bush. He’s already homerred here in this one. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And the first pitch misses for ball one. 10. [Applause] He had a foul ball. Here goes the runner up the middle dive and he’s got it. Throws from his knees and very nicely done for the out. Well, you can see right there he looks very comfortable going to the backand. Nice diving stop. Gets up to complete the play. That’ll fire the team up for sure. Here’s Kyle Tucker. He was a strikeout victim his first time. There’s the strike. man at second. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield headed for the plate. He’ll score. It’s an RBI single and they take a two-run lead. He was all over that one. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. Right on time. good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. And up next for Chicago, Seya Suzuki. He’s 0 for one. There’s a swing and a miss. 0 and one. Tucker stands at first with one out. [Applause] and he’s down 02 as he swings through it. He normally does damage on that pitch in that location. Just a swing and a miss there. I don’t think you want to throw it again though. [Music] [Applause] And down on strikes he goes. He’s notched four strikeouts now. clearly looking out over the plate on that outer third and that pitch finished right down the middle just a little bit in and he couldn’t pull the trigger. Crow Armstrong batting for the second time and that’s strike one. [Applause] Swings and misses and it’s nothing in two. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just got to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. [Applause] That misses the zone and it’s one and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. [Applause] Flares it into the outfield and makes the play and that’s out number three. So one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now a two nothing ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Back here at Wrigley Field, John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Mikel Garcia. All right, Chicago. Pitch misses. And that’s ball one. Well, these Royals just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches. They’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. Next pitch misses. Now two balls in a strike. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond. And they just keep eating right out of your hand. on the ground to the left. Swanson tosses to first. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. Now batting the right fielder, Salvador Perez. And now here is Salvador Perez. Grounded out his first time up. Let’s go. Ripped on a line to center and there’s two away. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Loftton jumps out of the way of ball one. One and0 and a one ball low. just missed. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Next offering is in for a strike. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. Draws the walk there. Take your base. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Fine at the plate for the second time as he takes ball one. He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. And another ball. Yeah. [Applause] just missed. Here’s an opportunity to do some damage and perhaps unlock this offense. 3-1 count. Be ready to turn on a fast ball. The 3-1 swinging a foul out of play. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. swing and a base hit. Just kind of sliced that one into center right there. He does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. Here comes Craig Councel and we’re going to see a pitching change. Colin Ray is done. Gave him a good effort as he exits with a lead and we’ll have a new pitcher when we come back. Now pitching for the gets handed the rock out of the pen. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season, so this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. John Rae steps in for the Royals. fly to left his first time way upstairs. And that’s ball one. [Applause] Two on, two outs. And that one is inside. Two and out. edging the zone for a strike and it’s two and one. Movement in the Cubs bullpen. Cade Horton getting loose out there. Number 57 also getting ready. Loftton on second. for me at first. Two out of the inning. [Applause] Here’s a highf fly ball out to center. Crow Armstrong should have it. Makes the grab and that’s the third out. Royals strand a pair. They trail it here. Two nothing. And we’re back. Bottom four. Now the left fielder. Ian ripped on the ground to second. India over to first in time. Lead off hitter retired. Matter number seven, shortstop Gansby. And now it’s Dansby. Swanson went down on strikes his first time through. [Applause] Out in front with the swing. And that is strike one. 0 and one. check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Oh, and two swings and misses. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. Just blown away in that at bat. Three fast balls, all strikes. Wasn’t even able to foul one off. There’s not much you can take away from an at bat like that as a hitter other than maybe there’s something wrong with your eyes. Got to have better timing on the fast ball next time. Horner for the second time. One ball, no strikes. Next offering is fouled back. that catches the top part of the zone. It’s a ball in two strikes and misses inside. [Applause] Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And the count’s full. Full count. And they’ll do it again. [Music] Base hit. So a two out knock. Keeps the inning alive. Now batting catcher. Here’s Reese Maguire. Fly to right. His first time. And that one a little below the knees. Ball one. Late swing. Fouled to the left. Two outs on the ground. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Cubs leave one. They’re up two nothing. Ready now for the fifth inning. And now here’s the speed threat. Outfielder number two. ball one there. Well, these Royals doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. One thing that really stands out to me is how they’ve only struck out one time. That’s good discipline right there. And on top of it, they’re producing more than a hit per inning. Two and0 to Cal. Here it comes. And another ball. All those numbers mean this offense is really making the defense work by just putting the ball into play. Anything can happen at that point. Fast ball for a strike. Fouls one away. And now three and two. punch him out. Got him looking away here in the fifth. So the Royals batting order turns over and now Jonathan India India and that’s outside ball one. The Cubs leading by two and we’re in the top of the fifth. This one chopped on the ground but fouled. Here’s a 1-1. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Tracks it down for the out. Two up, two down. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. [Applause] W stands in now and watches strike one. Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. Now the one inside almost got him. [Music] There’s a swing and a drive and that one’s gone into the bleachers. A solo shot. Home run number 15 on the year and they’re on the scoreboard. It’s 2-1. [Applause] A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. So, two away with nobody on. So, up now for Kansas City, Vinnie Pascantino. And that one clips the corner. Looks like the weather could actually play a factor in this one. It’s coming down pretty good. Yeah, it is. And it’s not too bad yet, but the field’s not going to be able to hold up if the rain gets any worse than this. So, keep an eye on the pitcher mound as well. And the rest of the infield start to puddle up a little bit. [Applause] Two down to the 22. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. Two outs. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Music] [Applause] Caught him looking for the K. Kansas City moves closer on this solo blast and it’s now a two-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. We head to the bottom of the fifth and now it’s Vidal Bruhan. Third base Vidal Bruhan Waka back to work. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Next offering is fouled back. That one misses. Yeah, the count one and two. Swing and a ball popped up. Garcia has this one sized up. drops into the glove and there’s one down. Now batting the first baseman, Michael. Back to the top of the lineup. Here’s the Cubs leadoff man, Michael Bush. He’s already homered in this game. That smash towards center, reaching for it and brings it in. We haven’t seen a break in the weather and the umpires might be forced to make a decision soon. Yeah, I think so, Boo. I mean, everyone looking and wondering when they’re going to stop play. It definitely feels close. And that drops in for a strike. That one not close. Two and one to the right side and it finds its way through for a hit. And that keeps the inning alive. Well, that was one of those high percentage advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher. We’ve all seen the defensive shift make a big difference in defending against pole hitters, but it’s not foolproof. He pulled it as expected, but he found a hole that time. [Applause] Suzuki in the box now. No balls in a strike. Two quick outs. Needed to get that third one. Wasn’t able to do it. Now you bring up the heart of this order. You got to find a way to get it done right here. And that one lifted in the air center field under this one. And makes the grab. And that’s the inning. One left for the Cubs. They lead it 2-1. Top six now. Mel Garcia [Applause] right through there for a strike. Some hitters are just more confident they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher. They don’t care if they fall behind 01. [Applause] That one misses in the dirt. The Cubs bullpen with some action. Caleb Thebar up and throwing for manager Craig Councel. Pomerance also throwing. to third. Fair ball. Well, that may end up being an at bat we go back to later on when this game is over. Just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent back control and it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tea where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. And to the plate for Kansas City, Salvador Perez pulls two in this one. Rudder takes off for the second tag and they got him. Well, this is a real momentum killer after the leadoff single. Tried to steal second base on the first pitch. Defense was all over it. Nicely done from behind the plate with a catch and throw and a quick tag before he reaches the base. The Royals down by a run and we’re in the top half of the six. Strike two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. fights it off. He’ll see another swing and a ground ball base hit right field. So, a man aboard now with one away. Now batting left fielder Nick. Here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Shota Imanaga departs and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching for the new arm for the Cubs. Cade Horton. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big ER. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. Runner on at first with one gone. Nick Loftton steps in for the Royals. He is struck out and he is walked. That’s off the mark. One and0. One. [Applause] Ground ball. Could be two. Offbalance feed. There’s one. Double play. The hit can’t seem to break through. Inning over. Well, the second base made that one look easy. Great feed to the shortstop. Shortstop completes the play. They get out of a jam and they end the inning. Bottom of the sixth inning. And now the center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong and that’s off the outside edge and it’s one and0. Bullpin action for the Royals. Noah Cameron the left-handed reliever appears to be getting loose. Clark getting cranked up as well. That one missed. Close pitch there and he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Fought off foul. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Still two and two after the foul ball. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. [Music] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Well, having such a tough time putting him away. Six foul balls in a row. Man, what a battle. And it remains two and two. And that one a little bit high. I thought he’d bite right there. Count is full. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. It feels to me like his time on the mound is running short. Starting to show some signs of fatigue. So, we’ll see how much longer they let him go. And the Royals manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Michael Waka done for the afternoon. Just never found his groove. Wasn’t able to settle in. New arm coming on. Back in a moment. Now pitching for new pitcher in the game for the Royals. Noah Cameron. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. So a man at first Ian hat the next Cub to hit. A switch hitter batting right. Fast ball for a strike. It’s 0 and one. I love this part of the game. Does he really want to try and steal second against this catcher? I know he’s fast, but it’s pretty risky. Next offering is in for a strike. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. [Applause] in the dirt but kept close. Not in time. He’s safe. And now a man into scoring position. Really good read by the runner there. His secondary lead. He anticipates the trajectory going down and gets a really nice jump off to second base. Now he’s in scoring position. He’s taken away the double play opportunity. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the bottom of the sixth. BS that off to the left and will do it again. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. The batter number seven. Here comes Dansby Swanson who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Oh, one. [Music] 0 and two now as he swings through it. He’s clearly out there throwing pitchers pitches in this situation. First base is open. He walks him. No big deal. That one just misses. Going to count one and two. Just missing off the plate there according to the umpire. And out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. That’s off the inside corner. Two and two. Runner takes off for third. Got him swinging out to third and that ends the inning. When you get thrown out at third with two outs, you kind of want to keep on running. Not a great decision there as it ends the inning. here at Wrigley Field. Here’s the catcher, Freddy Fine. On its way to the corner and that lands in no man’s land, a foul ball. Looking to get the tying run on base and that’s outside. One and one. And strike two just off the outside corner. The countdown now two and two. [Music] Swings and this one’s flared and it stays fair. clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there. And you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. Now it’s the DH John Rae [Applause] and fouled off. [Applause] And there’s the strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Ow. And two now gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] This one in the dirt. the tag and got him at second. Kind of a tough read for the base runner right there. You’re usually trying to be aggressive on balls in the dirt, trying to get in the scoring position, but if it doesn’t get away very far or you can’t tell how far it is, most catchers are going to get to it and throw you out at the base. And right there, excellent job by the catcher. He helps out his pitcher big time. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. Pass misses. It’s a strike out. Here’s the center fielder number two, Tyler Coberg. [Applause] Fouled off. He was late trying to keep good speed off the bases. Two down to that’s to third. Bruhan slings to first and that’ll do it. Royals bats are quiet there and our score remains 2-1. Bottom of the seventh. So here’s her now. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. And first offering is fouled off. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. That one out to right and that will drop foul. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss swing and he breaks his bat in plenty of time to first and they get Nico her one away. Got to feel pretty good for the pitcher. Absolutely saw him off bad explodes and then he makes an easy play on it. Pretty satisfying if you’re out there on the ball. Digging in Reese Maguire. First pitch missing. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. Base is empty, one away here. The bottom of the seven. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out up next for the Cubs. Two outs, bases in and now it’s switch hitting third baseman Vidal Bruhan. Foul ball. Yeah. And I figured you would get Katay into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. And right back to the mound. sends it to first and the Cubs go one, two, three. Nothing happening there for the Cubs, but they still lead it two to one. Caleb Thebar gets the ball now. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Jonathan India steps in for the Royals. One for three. India [Applause] outside and that’s ball one. Movement in the Cubs bullpen. Tino Roachcha up and throwing for manager Craig Councel. Pomerance getting loose as well. Pretty [Applause] good pitch to take a pass at and a one count. Just not able to square it up. Swing and a highf fly ball. That’s out to center for Armstrong. Grabs it on the run. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Out to short and save. He busted it down the line for that infield single. Well, that’s one of those where you just have to tip your cap because he couldn’t have played that one any better. stood no chance with the speed running down the line. One down and here’s the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino 0 for three with two ground outs and a strike out. Pitch is in there. Strike one. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in the scoring position. Here comes the 01. Line drive. Base hit. Whit around second. Here comes the throw. Not in time. The tying run stands at third with one out. And a fly ball could knock this one off. Garcia. Two on, one out. Garcia the next to hit. And that misses ball one. [Applause] Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Squirts away a little bit. Well done behind the dish. [Applause] You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. The two-1 swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. That one the other way. Base hit into the outfield. Wit scores and it’s an RBI single tie game here in the eighth. Well, he wasn’t afraid to hit with two strikes. I think he choked up a little bit, maybe spread out, but he got the job done right there. Here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Caleb Thebar done for the day and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching for the new pitcher in the game for the Cubs, Ryan Brazier. This guy’s a strike thrower. He’s done an excellent job of avoiding walks so far this season. And now the right fielder, Salvador Perez. Late swing fouled off. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. And that one fouled off. [Applause] Here’s the O2. Popped up to the left into foul ground. He’s under it. Feeling for the wall. Makes the catch and foul ground. Got the pitch that he wanted. Just a little bit quick. front shoulder open, backside collapsed a little bit, and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. And next up for the Royals, Nick Loftton. in there and it’s on one with the go ahead run standing at second and we’re in the top of the eighth. Next offering is down low. [Applause] Swinging a miss at a slider. clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. Swing a pop off in foul. Brown squeezes it and that’s the third out. But they pick up one run on the RBI single two-2 game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. John Shriber, left-handed batter at the plate, and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. Back to the top of the order now. So, up now for Chicago, Michael Bush. He gets a shot right here against the righty and he is elite against right-handed pitching. The contact, the average and delivers the slug. One ball, no strikes. Let’s go. Do it again. [Music] [Applause] [Music] In the left for a base hit. Off to a good start with a lead off. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come bigger than your own individual stats. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. And here’s the DH for the Cubs, Kyle Tucker. That misses. And that’s ball one. This might be a steel situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. [Applause] Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs to lay off that pitch down. Seiya Suzuki in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. The go-ahead run aboard at first. Nobody out [Applause] on the ground could be two. The throw to second is all right. A potential double play ball hit to first is probably the toughest one to execute cleanly. That first baseman, he’s got a very tough throwing lane to deal with because of the runner headed to second base. And a lot of times guys try to throw over or around the runner, which can really mess up a throw like that. Still definitely an error though. High leverage spot. And here is Seiya Suzuki. Just missed. Go ahead run at second here. Bottom half of the eighth inning upstairs. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs on the ground right side. Four, six, three, and they turn the double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Crow Armstrong. Now the Cubs four-hole hitter Pete Crow Armstrong. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position. That one got him. These types of mistakes usually turn out to be costly this late in the ball game. Things can really slip away in a hurry. with a runner at third. This is who they want at the plate. He’s so good at getting a run across in these situations. [Applause] Pat in the box now. Takes strike one. Well, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. And that one is inside ball one. Birdie the runner at third. Cro Armstrong on first with two down and delivers outside. It’s a big opportunity right here. But I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. And that is out of play. [Music] [Applause] Hard on the ground to first. He’ll do it himself. They miss a big chance to take the lead here late. Cubs strand a couple. Score remains 2-2. Now into the ball game on defense. Justin Turner. He takes over as the new first baseman. Number three. Here’s the catch here to him. Freddy Fine. Three for three with three singles. Brazier back to work. And one. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] He swings and hits a fly ball center field and there’s one down. Now that the designated hitter, John, now a pinch hitter coming on for the Royals, Kyle is going with the lefty bat here, boo. trying to improve that matchup for a very important at bat in this game. And a bunt towards third. Bruhan fires across the diamond. They handle the bunt and get the out. Perhaps he rushed just a little bit. Didn’t set the angle as the infield’s back right there. And that’s pretty much a guinea for a base hit. Just didn’t quite put it where he wanted to right there. [Applause] first pitch and he just misses. Brazier 37 years young and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2007. [Music] [Applause] Slider for a strike. Well, a good slider from an opposite-handed pitcher has to stay in that tunnel just a little bit longer. Otherwise, recognition can cause you to barrel it up. And right there, the hitter clearly couldn’t do anything with it. That one down the line and it goes just foul. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. Swings through that and it’s a strike out. And it’s a three up, three down inning. Nothing across here this half. 678 scheduled to start the bottom of the ninth. We are tied 2-2. And welcome back to the ballpark. Swanson digs in [Applause] one and0 activity in the Kansas City bullpen. Carlos Estz, the closer is getting loose. Clark warming up as well. [Applause] That one off the mark. And now 2 and 0. Two and0. [Applause] Gets the strike. That was the sweeper. Smoked on the ground to second, throws to first in time and the leadoff man retired here in the ninth. Up next for the Cubs, the second baseman, Nico, Nicoer will come up to hit. [Applause] that misses the zone and it’s one and0 [Music] [Applause] [Music] and that skips in the dirt. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. That one lifted to left. Loftton, he’s got it. Two down. Now batting the catcher. Now the Cubs catcher. Reese Magguire. 0 for three in this one. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Applause] Hard hit left side. Whit over to first. That’s the third out and we’re headed to extras. Three up, three down for the Cubs. Score remains deadlocked to 2-2. now pitching from. So the closer summoned from the bullpen, Tino Roachcha on for his major league debut. So we’ll see if he’s ready for the big stage. He just has to remember this is the same game that he’s played all the way through the minor leagues to this point. The only difference now here is Jonathan India. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Man at second and that misses down 2 and 0. No, that missed. That’s the ball. Almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be challenged. Bobby Whit Jr. in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] That one finds the zone and the count is three and one. [Applause] Rip to first, go to second and they got him. Double play. Bobby Whip Jr. will hit next. Now, this guy, a player that if he gets on base, has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths. That one’s in there and one. felt impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. Try to get ahead in the count. Then you can play around a little bit more as the at bat expands. And that’s in the dirt. The Cubs bullpen with some action. Number 57 up and throwing for manager Craig Council. Two outs. And that’s off the inside edge. And it’s two. Two balls, one strike. [Music] Just missed. Vinnie Pascantino in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two down, nobody on here. The top half of the 10. Fouls one away. And now three and two. Three and two. The pitch is outside and ball four. Exactly what they needed him to deliver there. A quality at bat. Now the pressure’s on to find a way to get him home. Go ahead run on base. And now the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one and another ball. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. And there’s a ball. You don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in. And he spits on that one. Mikel Garcia in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Little away. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Fires over to first. That’s the third out. Royals lead one and this game is still tied at two and two. Now pitching for back here in extras and a new pitcher on the mound in the bottom half of the inning. Taylor Clark. He’s been so good against lefties. Vidal Bruhan now at the plate. Look for him to hit behind the runner. Perhaps shoot it to the right side. [Applause] And that’s downstairs and outside. If you’re the pitcher, you got to go right at this guy. It’s the number nine hitter in the lineup. You can’t be afraid of contact in this situation. L drive. That’s a base hit. Throw comes in and the winning run stops 90 ft from home. Nobody out. So they hold the runner at third wanting to play it safe. Think that comes back to bite him. Boy, it’s hard to say. That runner on second to start extras is critical. You want to make sure you don’t waste him. They don’t score you saying there’ll be some second guessing for sure. Justin Turner now. And that’s way high. And that’s ball one. Nobody out. The winning run 90 ft away. [Applause] Just miss two balls. No strikes. [Applause] At 96. That pitch is in for a strike. 2-1. [Applause] Fast is outside. Kyle Tucker in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Nobody out. The winning run 90 ft away. And here in extra innings. Ball four. He walked in. And that keeps things going. Well, the stage has been set for this offense. Boo. It’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here. And now a very big at bat for Kyle Tucker. Golden opportunity right here. [Applause] Swinging a ground ball down the line and it’s fouled. They need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup something. But you got to make some pitches. But if he can battle and get through this, he can earn some points. This guy’s got good power. With one swing, he can win it for him. Swings through that one. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. Breaking ball in there. Got him looking. Huge strike out there. So he needed a strike out there and he got it. And now we’ll see how they play it defensively. Yeah, now they can move the middle infielders back a little bit. Get into double play depth and look for a ground ball and roll it up, get a big double play, get out of this inning. I tell you what, that was a big strike out in a spot where they really needed one. Now it’s the right fielder Seya Suzuki outfield moves in looking to cut down the winning run at the plate. First pitch misses. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. [Applause] One down and the winning run at third. Next offering is downstairs. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in a run. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. And a popup right side. foul territory. He’s under it and there’s two down. Oh, that’s a frustrating at bat right there. Big opportunity and just missed it. I know he wanted to do some damage. Next guy have to pick him up. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Pete Crow Armstrong. Known for his late inning heroics. [Applause] Tap foul at the plate. [Music] [Applause] Straight two. And there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing a run. So they’re all loaded up. swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field and that is the inning back here at the friendly confines and now it’s going to be Mikel Garcia here. [Applause] Very high with that one. Ball one. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. [Applause] That’s off the inside corner. Two and one. [Applause] Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Salvador Perez in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. And ball four, two aboard. Well, he took his chance at getting him to chase right there. But with first base open, walk not a bad thing. He set up a double play opportunity if he can induce a ground ball. [Applause] Perez at the plate and takes high there with the go-ahead run standing at second. And we’re here in the top half of the 11. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Applause] And that’s a base hit. They won’t test it here. Bases loaded, no outs. So they hold the runner at third wanting to play it safe. Think that comes back to bite him. Boy, it’s hard to say. That runner on second to start extras is critical. You want to make sure you don’t waste him. They don’t score this inning. There’ll be some second guessing for sure. So bases all loaded up. Nick Loftton getting ready to hit and a first pitch fast is in for a strike in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring with the go ahead run at third here in extra innings. That’s outside. One and one. One and one. And that’s fouled off. [Applause] goes down looking the battle. The catcher ready for me. manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Tino Roachcha gives way and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching. Here comes a new arm for the Cubs. Number 57. Well, no margin for error in terms of throwing strikes with the bases loaded. just has to execute one pitch at a time to try to get out of this. So up next, Freddy Fine. And that one fouled off. Pascino at third. Garcia over at second. Perez at first. One gone. That one misses and one and one. [Applause] Hit in the air left field. Hat brings it in. Runner tags from third. Tag out. They cut down the go ahead run at the plate. Out to escape a bases loaded jam unscathed. [Applause] We’re at extras here. So up now for Chicago. [Applause] Half lays off. [Applause] ball. [Applause] Close one. Doesn’t get the call and it’s 3 and 0. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. [Applause] Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. And that one fouled off. [Applause] Fouls one away. And now three and two. [Applause] man at second. Blind drive out towards left field. That’s a base hit. Runner around third and he dives in with a winning run. And the Cubs walk it off in the 11. You know, he had to feel the pressure. A winning run on second base. Found a way to make solid contact and the winning run comes across to score. Everyone going crazy. Exciting finish to this game today. [Applause] A 32 final score in this one. So, the Cubs celebrate at the plate for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB The Show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
