MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs Miami Marlins – Jul 23, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

Along with Chris Singleton, I’m John Shami. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the San Diego Padres’s taking on the Miami Marlins. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about set to go now. And on the hill in this one, Sandy Alcantara. Yeah, he’s definitely had a struggle so far this year as evidenced by that inflated whip. But he’s going to have to find a way to limit the base runners, put his team in a position to win a ball game. So, we know he’s prepared. We know this guy is a competitor and we’ll watch how he works in this one. And the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit around first heading for two. And one pitch into the inning. It’s a leadoff double. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel. Put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Now here is Luis Araz that misses the zone and it’s one and0. Tatis leads off second with nobody out. Here we go, Miami. And that’s in for a strike. Boy, he’s realizing out there on the mound that he’s got to settle in pretty quickly or else he’s going to get hit hard in this first inning. Blind into right. Meyers makes the play. Johnny tags it second. Not in time. He’s safe. As we take a look at the Padres’s lineup, a guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus, Gavin Sheets. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Manny Machado stands in now and watches strike one. Definitely not a pitch location you’re expecting up there as a hitter when you know the guy’s got a good sinker ball. If he can get in that location, boy, you’ve got to look top to bottom and that’s going to make it very difficult to hit. Next offering way off the plate. No score here, but a runner at third with one down. On the ground right side and it goes just foul. Swinging a ground ball. Handles. throws to first there for the out. Runner scores from third. So important to really lock in on an at bat like this. It seems easy with the infield back, but you’ve got to make sure you put the ball in play. Put it on the ground. Brought that run in. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. Come on. [Applause] That’s down and in. Counts one and0. [Applause] And there’s the strike. Two outs. Base is empty. Just missed. [Music] [Applause] Oh, that’s low. Jackson Merrill up next. [Applause] That’s ball four. Tried another sinker but couldn’t find his own. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. So a man at first and now the center fielder Jackson Merrill 0 and one pitch. Foul ball there [Music] [Applause] outside and the count is one and two [Applause] to the right side. Edwards gets it to first and that’ll do it. A run, a hit, and a man left onto the bottom of the first. It’s the Padres’s one. And the Marlins coming up. Back here with my pal Singi. Today’s starting pitcher, Dylan Cease. And Singy, that may be his name, but the strikeout is his game. Well, Boo, I can tell you’ve been working on that one, but yes, you are right. this guy strikeout per nine over 11. I mean, that’s just getting it done. There are a lot of strikeouts in that other lineup. And when you look at what he’s able to do, man, it’s going to be a fun one to watch today. We go to the bottom of the first. Now, it’s the second baseman, Xavier Edwards bunting for a hit. And that’s just fouled. That one misses in the dirt. [Applause] Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. That one misses. Two balls, two strikes. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up on the ground and foul ball. The 2- two on the way. Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field and that’ll get down for a hit. So runner aboard to start the inning. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. You know what they say, he couldn’t have thrown it out there any better than that. And certainly the case that time. Just flared it back behind the second baseman and dropped it in there. Jesus Sanchez the next to hit. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes. There’s the ball. Throw to second and he’s out. Well, this is a real momentum killer after the leadoff single. tried to steal second base on the first pitch. Defense was all over it. Nicely done from behind the plate with the catch and throw. Then a quick tag before he reaches the base. One out. Base is empty. Right side but it kicks fouled. Ball to strike. The pitch gets a swing and a miss with the sweeper. One ball, two strikes. Runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. I’m not sure that was the exact location the pitcher wanted, but it worked. He got the swing and miss. And I’m sure a bit of side relief after seeing that one go through the zone. Otto Lopez stands in with two away as he takes a ball and a one fought off. Foul cut on and lifted in the air. pulls it down and he makes the catch. And that is that and welcome back to the ballpark. Second inning set to go. And here is Xander Bogart’s Alcantara back to work. swing a miss at 100 m anph. And that misses and the count even one and one. Dave Lawrence is signed to work home plate in this one. Good umpire, Boog. Very fair, very consistent. Now, I did hear some feedback that he opens up the outside corner a little bit on left-handed hitters, which, you know, for me, I’d be kind of salty. So, maybe something to keep an eye on and see if that factors into this one at all. packs and misses. It’s a strike out. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. That one pushed to the left and fouled. I just love watching Alcantra get ready for games. Boo. He turns into a different person. Just usually cracking jokes and having a good time, but start days are a different story. That’s when things get serious for this guy. Hard ground ball base. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Batting the first baseman. And now the first baseman trendy Brooks just off the inside edge. Brooks in his rookie season, 29 years old, he joined the team as a free agent. [Music] This game is too for you, San Diego. And another ball misses off the inside. And that’s ball three. Croninworth leads off first with one away. Next offering is in for a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. Here’s a swing and a line drive. And that’s a base hit into right field to third. Not in time. And it’s runners at the corners with one gone. A swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Here’s Elias Diaz and a foul ball. swing and a base hit. Runner from third comes across and it’s an RBI single and they take a two-run lead. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. Well done. Drives in the run. pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap and I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bottle. So many positives that led to that knock. So the batting order turns over insteps El Nino Fernando Tatiz Jr. led off this game with a double that one ripped. That’s down. One hops off the wall. One run across now. The throw comes in. Runner holds it third. Comes through with the RBI. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. Ones in the cage, you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle. Not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. Two on, one out. Next for the Padres’s, Luis Arise. He’s 0 for one. And that one fouled off. [Applause] [Music] That one finds the zone. That is strike two. Action in the pen down there. Valente Beoozo appears to be getting loose. Number 66, the lefty warming up as well. [Music] And it’s a strike out for the Sandman. His second of the game. Well, clearly just anxious right there. And understandably so. In an 02 count, you feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out. It’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate, but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand, by the time you realized it wasn’t going to be in the zone, it’s too late to hold up your sway. Machado in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Hey, it’s still early in this ball game, but you know, this at bat right here could be a big factor in the outcome. You think about it, there’s a chance to really blow this thing open right here on the ground to short. Throws the first in time. Machado out of the play. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. So, it’s two runs on four hits, no errors, and a couple left on. Now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Padres’s three and the Marlins nothing. And we’re back. Bottom half of inning number two now Ramirez Ramirez that’s way outside and that’s ball one. A three-0 lead is great but you can’t get too comfortable. Got to stay aggressive. Keep attacking hitters. Try to cruise through this ball game. Lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Sheets pulls it in and there’s one away. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Kyle Sters in the box now. No balls in a strike. swings through that. He was really trying to stay back for something off speed. That’s why he was so tardy on that swing. Swing and a miss. Curve ball in the dirt. Diaz on to first and there’s two gone following the strike out. I think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging. Now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days, that’s a devastating combination. Two outs. Space is empty. Liam Hicks the next up for the Marlins. Fast for a strike. Two down to outside low and that’s ball one. Lifted in the air down the left side. Brings it in. And that is that. back here in Miami. Out of the third inning, you have a left fielder Gavin Sheets. Sheets in for a strike. One and one line drive. Oh, he gloves it. Wow, that was an awesome leaping catch. Great reactions. Great athleticism, man. He snatched that thing out of the air and he robbed him of a base hit. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. Rolled out to second in his first at bat. That misses ball one and that’s in the dirt. No strike up the middle. Lays out but he can’t squeeze it. Safe at first as they can’t make the play. man at first with one gone. Here’s Bogards now 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time in the air out towards left center. Sanchez pulls it in and there’s two away. [Applause] The batter number nine, second base Jake Croninworth. Here’s the second baseman Jake Croninworth. One for one with a single so far. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. Alcantra over to first. Merrill back on a dive. Swings through that one out in front that time. Filthy change up right there. Just pulled the string. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Padres’s leave one, but they’re on top by a count of three to nothing. Back here at Lone Depot Park. Now it’s the right fielder Dane Meyers. Meers. Let’s go Dane. And a breaking ball. Misses outside. And a foul ball. All sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. Pitch misses there. Two and two. And that one ripped to left. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. One up. One down. The third baseman Gra Paulley. And now for the Marlins. Ram Paulie and first offering is fouled off. One down, base is empty and a curve misses outside. One and one. Yeah, there’s the strike. One ball, two strikes. Battling here as he fouls it away. And that’s downstairs. The countdown now two and two. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Next pitch is outside. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. [Applause] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Music] Good played appearance there. Able to take the walk. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. Yeah, the batter now, Nick Forez. First pitch just misses. inside corner and that’s called a strike. One ball man at first, one away. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. fights that one away. Still one and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. The one two swing and a ball popped up. Machado. Two down. The batter number nine, second baseman, Xavier Edwards. Xavier Edwards gets a chance to hit here. one for one. He let off the bottom of the first with a single. Not close with that one. And that is ball one. Paulie the runner at first with two gone. Now fly ball to right center. Merrill on his way over and makes the grab and that’s the third out. Marlins leave one. They trail it here. Three nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here’s the first baseman, Trenton Brooks. Brooks, first offering and it just misses. You know, these Padres’s doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. [Music] Down the inside corner for a strike. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the veteran to get involved a little sooner rather than later. [Applause] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. swings and misses. Struck him out. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this. Known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. And now it’s Elias Diaz. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. Center field. Sanchez sizing this one up. Makes the grab for the second out. Now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis. Back to the top of the lineup. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. Let’s go Miami. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Hammers that one deep left field and forget it. He’ll touch them all. His 17th of the year. It’s 4 nothing. Singi. The ball is jumping off his bat. Yes, it is. Tons of loud contact. Man, it’s been impressive. Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage, even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. Two down, base is empty. Luis Araz digs in now. Here’s a rip to short, but he’s there for the third out. The Padres’s get one in the inning with a solo blast. It’s now a four nothing ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And we’re back. John Chami and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Jesus Sanchez. Let’s go. Here we go. Miami first pitch doesn’t find the zone. Swing and a miss. Strike one. I got one ball, one strike. Swing and a popup. Machado should have this one. Carous it and there’s one away. The batter number six, shortstop Otto. And now the shorts stop. Otto Lopez fly to right his first time. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond. And this guy is at the top of the list. Right through there for a strike. Yeah, we go beyond just the, you know, fielding percentage and, you know, what it looks like, but the ability to have a range and, you know, close holes that, you know, are normally there against an average defender. But this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness. Lifted in the air out to left. Sheets makes the grab. Two down. Good pitch. She just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed. Two outs, space is empty. Next to hit, Augustine Ramirez fly to left his first time. He’s got pop, which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field, but he can jump you if you make a mistake. And the one thing about that is speed never goes in slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics. But the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. Going to count one and two. One ball, two strikes to count. Nope. outside [Applause] and a foul ball. He stays alive. The Padres’s leading by four. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. might want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good vlo and down on strikes and good work there as he gets a one two three nothing doing for the Marlins they’re down four nothing now pitching for new pitcher now Jansen Junk he doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing the work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. Manny Machado. Machado in the box again takes the strike. You know, these Padres’s putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. Line drive, base hit down the line. Man aboard on the leadoff single. The batter the left field Gavin the next up for the Padres’s that misses and it’s one and0. Junk the 6-2 righty. He features a fourseam fast ball, a sinker, a slider, a slur, and he occasionally uses a curve. Top of the zone for a called strike. [Applause] [Music] That one is absolutely belted and it hits the fence and they’re at the corners with nobody out. Now batting the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. So runners at the corners, nobody out. Here’s the center fielder, Jackson Merrill, one for two. That breaking ball drops in for a strike. Machado at third. Sheets on at first with nobody out. [Music] Line drive caught. Dives for the bag. Got him. Double play. Number two. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. Just missed. Rudder at third. Two away. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball two. [Music] That one missed. Jake Cronin work in the San Diego on deck circle. Next pitch in for a strike. Three and one and ball forward. Two aboard. Thank you. Now b second base. So two outs with runners on the corners. So digging in now for San Diego. Jake Croninworth and that one is in for a strike at 95. It’s 0 and one. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. Runners on first and third. Two away and we’re in the top of the fifth. Got him. Third out that ends the frame. Padres’s leave a pair, but they lead it four to nothing. [Applause] Back here in Miami, here’s the left fielder, Kyle Stard. Kyle Starde back to work. And that’s outside. You know, these Marlins being a little too patient at the plate in this game. Sometimes it’s a good thing, but today they’re continuing to fall behind in the count and it’s adding a ton of pressure to their offense. And another ball That one finds the zone. They’re now three and one. Hard hit right side and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. And now the first baseman, Liam Hicks. There’s a swing and a try back there. And that’s a home run into the upper deck. Into the second deck it goes. Home run number five on the season. And they’re chipping away. It’s 4-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Well, he went up there o looking to do damage. I think he had his sight set on that pitch. He went and got it and circled the bases. [Applause] One out, bases empty. Dane Meyers getting ready to hit in the air out to center. Makes the grab after a long run. And there’s two away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Paulie at the plate and takes high there. [Applause] So, two balls and no strikes. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike. Two down, base is empty, but one run across. Last half of inning number five on the ground right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. Back after this on the show. Back here at Lone Depot Park. And here’s the first baseman, Trenton Brooks. Brooks. Foul ball. Strike two. And ball one. Foul ball still a one and two count. Swung on and fouled off. And he’ll need a new bat. Fouls it off. Still one and two in the air. Pretty deep out to center field. Sanchez ranging after it and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s one down. Now batting the catcher, Elias. Stepping in for San Diego, Elias Diaz. Miami. And that drops in for a strike. [Music] That one a little bit high. Ball one. Base is empty. One away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. And foul ball [Music] swing and a miss. Struck him out and there are two outs. Oh, that slider was way out of the zone. And for me, it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand, not tracking into the zone. And then also being a little bit anxious, not confident in your two strike approach. And so when a guy’s in that position, you get him to commit early and a lot of times you get the swing and miss as you did right there. Tatis in now takes ball one off the plate. Swing and a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play. Tatis waits and that one wrapped foul. Look out that ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the lines just ensure safety for the fans. Last thing as a player, you want to look up and see a fan get hit. [Music] Well, with the shift on hits right into it to first and the inning is over. Nothing across here this half. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the six. It’s the Padres’s four and the Marlins one. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the sixth inning. And now it’s going to be Nick Forz. And there’s a foul ball. That one finds the zone and the count is 0 and two. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. Next pitch way upstairs. Rarely will you see a pitcher just to waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out just off the outside part of the plate. Well, I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. You can do this. and that just misses. [Applause] Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing a walk. Xavier Edwards the next up for the Marlins. [Applause] Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. And that’s a little bit high. Two and 0. Forz aboard here at first with nobody out. Now, 0. [Music] And ball four to a board. Definitely lost the handle during that sequence. Four pitches for the walk. And that last one didn’t even threaten the zone. Catcher might want to go talk to him. Jesus Sanchez the next up for the Marlins. Go for two in this one. Down the line and it’s foul. Fast ball for a strike and it’s 0 and two. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Jason Adams up and throwing. Hoing getting loose as well. [Applause] Got him. Dave Lawrence rings him up. So far, just one of those days for this lineup. You get a couple of runners on and you’re looking at having a big inning and that strike out right there just pours water on the fire. Look for the next hitter to step up and try to do something. Pick up his teammate and his club. [Applause] Lopez up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. Way to lay off that pitch down. Fast ball for a strike with the tying run at the plate here in the bottom of the six. [Applause] Hit on the ground to the right side and it stays there. Runner around third, the throw in, safe at home. And the runner scores from second. And now just a two-run deficit. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at back. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Runners at the corners here. One away. Augustine Ramirez will hit next. First pitch just misses at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play boo. Runners are at the corners. One away. And another ball. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. [Applause] and misses inside. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Inside corner at the knees for a strike. [Applause] And that’ll load the bases. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Dylan Cease done for the day. and he leaves with the lead after giving them some decent innings. We’ll be back with a new pitcher in a moment. Now pitching for So the Padres’s with a new arm on the mound, Yuki Matsui, and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one in innings, so he’ll be tough to get to. Kyle Sters the next up for the Marlins. Golden opportunity right here. [Applause] First pitch misses. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. Ripped down the line way back there. It’s got a chance and it is fouled. Oh man, that’s a tough one to swallow. Had the distance, just couldn’t keep it fair. Imagine how great that feels running around the bases when you’ve just hit a granny. He’s got to dig back in, figure out a way on the inside corner for called strike three. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. Really locked him up. And it’s a hitter. It’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in. So, you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. It’s hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. Now it’s going to be Liam Hicks inside. Just missed. Base is loaded. Two down. [Applause] [Applause] off the mark there and it’s two in one. Boo. In situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. And that’s down and away. Tribal one. that catches the corner. So, all three runners will be off on a full count pitch with two away. Yeah, this is a good chance to tie this ball game up. Maybe even take Ah, he locked him up. And that’ll do it. The inning is over. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. Now pitching forward. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Anthony Bender has certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season. The numbers are really solid. So they feel great about handing the ball over to him. Luis Arise stands in. The designated hitter, Luis Orizz, popped up to the left into foul ground, reaches over the wall and he’s got it. Manny Machado up to the plate. Right through there for a strike. [Music] You can do it. One down. Base is empty. And Manny gets a piece. [Music] fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and that’ll fall for a base hit. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. [Music] Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Sanchez sizes this one up, snags it for the second out. Now batting the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. And here is Jackson Merrill, one for three. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Machado leads off first with two down to the inning. [Applause] Just misses. Now one and two. Swing and a miss. Stuck him out. That ends the frame. One left for San Diego as they can’t add to their 4-2 lead. [Music] [Applause] Now pitching for we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Jason Adams. And we all know about a slider. It’s just filthy, man. and one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. So, digging in, the right fielder, Dave Meyers, there’s the strike. 95 of that one. Owen Chu now on the ground right side. Croninworth tosses to first. One up, one down. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff. Just like we saw, Graham Paulie the next to hit. Ground ball right side over to first and that quickly two away. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Nick Forez now at the plate. That one catches the zone and it’s 0 and one. Swing and a foul out of play. Let’s do this Miami. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom of the seventh. Got him looking. Three up, three down. Inning over and the Marlins down quietly. They trail it here four to2. And we’re back. We’re in the top of the eighth. Here comes X to the plate. Bogar. Bender back to work inside. And that’s ball one. Back to the mound. He’s got it. Tosses to first. First out in the top of the eighth. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Jake Croninworth digs in now. [Music] Missed with a change up. One and0. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Evidently not too impressed with that call and it feels like he got squeezed on the outside corner. So, he’s making his case. You got to be careful to pick your spots in terms of showing your frustration with the umpire and he felt this was his time. One down, base is empty. Here’s a chopper to short. Lopez on to first and a couple of quick outs. Now batting the first baseman, Trenton Brooks. Two down, base is empty. Trenton Brooks will hit next. Just off the outside edge. And that’s ball one. [Music] Just missed. Two balls, no strikes. [Music] This one in the air. Hicks has this one sized up. Hauls it into the inning. Padres’s go down quietly, but they still lead this one four-2. Bottom of the eighth and now it’s the switch inning second baseman Xavier Edwards. Adam goes 6′ 3 in 230 lb and he was a fifth round pick back in 2010. Miami. This one in the air. Bogarts and it’s caught for the out. Couple of pitches and a quick out. The center fielder number seven, Jesus Sanchez. Jesus Sanchez the next up for the Marlins. struck out on just three pitches last time. [Applause] And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Here comes the one. Swings through that one. No ball, two strikes. chases the fast up the ladder. Struck him out. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of how it’s played. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Now it’s the shorts stop. Otto Lopez way high. Counts one and0. The Padres’s leading by two here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Next offering is in for a strike. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. [Music] Swing and a miss. And he chases that one in the dirt. Diaz on to first and it’s in time for the third out. So that’ll end the unit. And we’ve got ourselves a pitching change. Calantrol just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Ciao. [Applause] Elias Diaz getting ready to hit the catcher number 17 Elias Diaz [Applause] outside low and it’s one and0 activity in the bullpen. Valente Beoo appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Number 66, a left-hander also throwing. That’s off the inside corner and it’s two and 0. [Applause] Swung on. Belted and that’s a fair ball. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Most of the time you blast one down into the left field corner like that and you’re standing on second base. So I’m pretty surprised they didn’t push it there. But a nice job to fire it back into the infield quickly and keep that to a single. Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit here. And that’s in there for strike one. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Swinging a ground ball up the middle and it finds its way through for a head and out to a board. couple of singles back to back. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself ahead. So, now here’s the DH Luis Aas. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Ball one, no strikes. [Applause] right through there for a strike. First and second here. No outs. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Applause] Ground ball to first. Could be two. Here’s Lopez for one. Back to first. And that is a double play. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play, and then from there completing it back to first. really good job all the way around. Here’s Manny Machado. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. And a strike on the outside edge. Diaz on third with two out. [Applause] Pop foul out of play off to the right. [Music] [Applause] [Music] And a seed into center. That’s a base hit. In comes the run from third to add on. It’s an RBI single and they take a threerun lead. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. Man at first and next will be the cleanup hitter Gavin Sheets. Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Now batting the center fielder Jackson. Next for the Padres’s Jackson Merrill. [Applause] Line to left. Fair ball. Here comes Machado around third. One run is in. Coming home. The relay and he’s out. Tuck down and that ends the inning. They put two on the board. Five hits, no errors, and one left on. Onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up. It’s the Padres’s six and the Marlins two. Back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Hoen. Well, I got to think he probably has a little extra in the tank facing his former team. And there’s not a player in the league that doesn’t get a little extra motivation when he plays against his old squad. And now Augustine Ramirez. Ah, that hit him. And the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. Man at first, nobody out. And here is Kyle Stard for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. [Applause] Little bit low. And that is ball one. Runner at first with no outs here. [Applause] and he grounds one to the right side and that goes foul. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] out towards right center. That’s well struck and it one hops the wall coming home. The relay to the plate. He’ll score. It’s six to three. Well done. Narrows the deficit with the RBI there. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And now the first baseman, Liam Hicks. He’s already homered here in this one. There’s the strike. [Applause] Liner caught at second. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact, and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Here comes the skipper, and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. So, the closer summon from the bullpen, Robert Suarez. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. And up next for Miami, Dane Meyers 0 for three in this one. All season long. He’s racked up a number of saves. And sometimes the adrenaline doesn’t get high enough until there’s a runner or two on base. [Applause] Just about gives his skipper a heart attack, but that’s where he functions best. [Applause] Well, you got to find a way to catch up to that pitch. Perhaps shorten the swing, eliminate the stride. That one came in hot. But right down the middle, you’re saying to yourself, “How did I miss that pitch?” Got to make a quick adjustment. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] got him looking for the K and they’re down to their last out. Well, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position and two strikes. Just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. So, they’re down to their final out. Graham Paulie the next up for the Marlins and first offering is fouled off. Sters at second with two down. And that misses one ball, one strike. One and one. [Applause] The fish down to their final strike. That’s a little bit low. Pitch misses and it’s three and two. Pressure Mountain right here with the tying run in the on deck circle. He’s got to find the strike zone. Rudder at second, two down. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Foul ball and it remains a full count. [Music] [Applause] Got him. And that’s the ball game. Well, this was a tightly played game. Got a little of everything. Some timely hitting, runs on the board, key pitching, and defense in certain spots. Definitely a fun one to watch. 6-3 our final score for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
