Reds vs. Nationals Game Highlights (7/23/25) | MLB Highlights
Michael Sroka could be one of his last starts as a national with the trade deadline looming. Yeah. Three and seven with a 51 RA 72 in third innings. You love the whip at 115. Looks ahead in the count. Two balls and no strikes. He swings and guess where he goes? A line drive right back up the middle. He’s a machine. That is five straight at bats now for Gavin Lux with a single. All of them up the middle. And now Ellie de la Cruz. Ground ball to first. Stays fair. Low taps the bag. Throws down to second and the tag applied. 36 on the double play to get Michael Soka out of a scoreless first inning. On the mound, big tall lefty Nick Lollo. This is the number seven overall pick back in 2019’s draft out of TCU. Yeah, he’s a horn frog. 21st star on the year. 333 RA swing and a miss. Got him with a breaking ball down and away. And Abrams is down on strikes to begin the Nationals first inning. The batter is James Wood. Drills this one back up the middle and a one out single for James Wood. Right back on the beam with his third hit of the series and definitely starting to see more hard contact from Wood. The runner goes. The pitch is high. Throw to second and it’s a good one. And they’ve got James Wood by a mile as he tried the little stop and dipsy do but that didn’t work. Counts two and two on Rosario. Now Rosario swings and lifts a lazy fly to right field. There’s Freley waiting on it. He’ll make the catch and the Nationals are out quietly in the first. A Frederick, Maryland. Jake Freilley will stand in comes in over the outside corner with a curveball and Freley down looking. Sroa has his first strike out and Freley has a quick word with Jordan Baker and actually a little bit longer than a quick word before departing. I tell you what, Soka, five batters into the game’s looking pretty sharp. That’s another K with the curve ball. Michael Sroka with an impressive top of the second inning. A pop up and two strikeouts. Brady House with two down. A light drive up the middle. That’s a base hit to left center field out of the reach of Dela Cruz. Picked up in left center by Will Benson. So Brady House has a hit in each game of the series and 11 of his last 12 games he has ahead. Brady’s bat is going. So a two out single brings in Luis Garcia Jr. Soft ground ball to Lux. He’ll field and flip it to Espenol for the outside retired. That’ll do it for the Nationals. We go to the third. Scoreless. So, Michael Soka, two loud outs, then a walk of Espanol and a hit by pitch of Fedel. So, two on now with two out. And here’s Gavin Lux who’s five for his last five. Lux swings and drives it towards center. Young is there. The center fielder gliding back makes the catch and the hard hit liner and that ends the inning. Seventh game in the big leagues this year for Milis. Somehour fast ball got Milis looking as tracked by the JTF gov radar gun and Milis takes strike three right over the outside corner letter high. Fast ball just low for ball four and the very speedy Ellie de la Cruz reaches on a leadoff walk. Austin Hayes the cleanup man now batting out ahead of the curveball and he’s down on strikes. There’s a big strikeout for Sroka. His third of the game. Third strikeout for Soka. All three on the curve. Two and0 now on Jake Frillley as Dela Cruz takes off. A throw down into second base is not going to be in time. Millis tried to get rid of it as best he could. It looked like an offspe pitch. It was. It was a slurvy curveball and did not give him very much of a chance to throw the runner out. So the stolen base by Ellie puts a runner in scoring position for the Reds. And the Cruz at second, only one away this inning. Nothing to nothing. Now Jake Freley with a base hit center field. Here comes Da Cruz to the plate and the Reds have a one- nothing lead and an RBI to put the Reds on the board by Jakey. Rosario singles and a one out base runner now for the Nationals. Possible tying run on base. Daniel Low will come up next. Swing and a miss. Had low way out in front of it. So that’s a strikeout for the second out of the fourth inning. Now Alex Call. Swing and a miss. And Looo’s got his man. Alex Call goes down for the third out of the inning. Lollo picks up his fourth strike out of the day. Nick Ledo on the mound. Inning number five for him. One- nothing Reds. The pitch is on the inside corner. That’s a strike. That is the third strike out in a row now for Nick Lollo. Had no balls in two strikes on Garcia Jr. Ugly swing. Four straight punch outs for Lollo. Third walk from Sro’s also hit two men. And so Hayes is on base with one out. And now it’s Noelvie Mart’s turn to bat. He struck out looking in a curve in the second. They kick the right. He’s 10. Check swing and a fast ball inside. They’ll appeal to first, but James Jean says no swing. And Marte is saying that ball hit him. He wants a challenge. He’s telling the Franka to look at the replay. I don’t think anyone in the dugout even knew until Marte signaled to them. And they’re going to challenge. Might have clipped his back elbow. You’d feel that if a if you’re a hitter, you would certainly feel that. And Marte immediately pointed to where he thought it hit him. The field was overturned. The runner was hit by the pitch. We’ll go to first base. Cincinnati will retain their challenge. Now the Reds have runners at first and second base. Is going to mark the end of the afternoon for Michael Sroka. Miguel Cairo is headed to the mount. He will bring in Cole Henry in this spot. Got in on the hands of Trevvinho who pops it up to the right side. Alex Cover has to make a late adjustment but gets there in tough. Boy, Nick Lollo has been excellent. the capital E so far. Three hits allowed. They’re all singles. It’s another breaking ball from Lollo. Down and away. Wood can’t lay off. He swings right through it. He’s down on strikes. That’s seven for Nick Lollo. Jackson Rutled out of the NATS pen. Face Austin Hayes here with one out. And here it comes. And it’s lined up the middle over the head of the second baseman, Garcia. And that’s on into center field for a hit. Austin Hayes is on for the second consecutive at bat. to walk his last time up. One out, base hit and Jake Freley will come to the plate. Other line drive, base hit right center field. Hayes will make the turn. He’s on his way to third base. Red’s in business here. First and third, one out. Second hit of the game for Jake Freilley. Continues to swing some hot lumber. Now the Reds are in business with him at the corners and only one out in the inning. Here’s Noel Marte. Runners of the corners, one out. base hit down the left field line. That’ll score Austin Hayes. On his way to third is Freley. And standing at second with an RBI double is Noel Vie Marte. And you can put that in the large category. Marte was just all over it with a hooking line drive inside the third base bag. Two nothing Reds and a couple of big insurance runs sitting out there right now. Trevvinho sends a fly ball to center field. Jacob Young moving back toward the right center field gap. Should be deep enough to get the run home. Freley’s going to tag at third. He’ll score as the catch is made by Young. Tagging at second, Marte. He moves into third on the sack fly by Trevinho. Those are big runs for the Revs at this point in the ball game and they’re big runs in the mind of Nick Lollo. This one out to deep center. Young back at the wall. Jacob Young defying gravity. My oh my. Jacob Young, can he fly? His shoulders are above the wall. He told Denzel Clark, “Hold my beer.” That’s a stunner. That’s as good a catch as you’ll ever, ever see. That’s been a theme all afternoon. Ledo getting ahead of the count and ahead here. No balls and two strikes. The O2 swinging a ground ball past the mound. Dela Cruz and Mlan kind of get almost collide and neither fields the ball. Garcia’s trying for second. The throw there, the tag, and he’s safe. Wow. Garcia took a heck of a risk after Mlan and Dela Cruz got all twisted and tangled up. Neither were able to touch the ball. The ball scoots out into right center and Garcia is safe at second for now. But the Reds are going to challenge this. And you cannot make this out. Down by three. The runner is safe. Cincinnati will lose this. All right. So, Garcia does avoid making the out at second and he is credited with a double. Runner at second, one out. Be Riley Adams hit for Drew Millis. Swing and a miss. That’s a big punch out for Lollo. A nine batter Jacob Young. And it’s a ground ball right at Matt Mlan. Oh yeah, good job. Eight innings of shut out baseball from Nick Lollo. So, a single followed by a walk and the Reds have two on with nobody out. Second, nobody out. And here’s the first at bat of the game for Matt Mlan. Lays it down. It’s a good one. And that one’s offline. And this will score a run. They’re going to hold up Fredo at third. Fredo took the hard turn around third base. The Reds will take that. It’s four nothing. Here’s LA de Cruz at the pitch. Up the middle. Abrams steps on second on to first. That’s a double play, but another run scores. Five nothing Reds as Fredo come comes across. Nick Lollo has been cruising here today. Eight shutout innings. The first time in his big league career. He will pitch into the ninth. CJ Abrams at the plate. Perfectly positioned as Ellie de la Cruz. One down. Pitch number 100. Is a ground ball right side. Two down. Tell you this is a big time performance by Nick Lollo. There’s no doubt that the Reds needed a big performance from a starter today. Two two pitch on the ground. Mlan has it and Nick Lodo with a complete game shutout for the first time in his career. The big lefty goes the distance and goose eggs across the board. Reds win it 5 nothing here in the nation’s
