Padres vs. Marlins Game Highlights (7/23/25) | MLB Highlights
Sandy Alcantra on the mound today for the Fish. Well, not the same right-hander that the Marlins were hoping for. And it’s a kind of like an up and down season making his 20th start. Well, the highest earned run average in Major League Baseball this year. Minimum 70 innings pitched with his 7.14 RA this year. It’s got to be so frustrating for a guy who is just usually flat out dominant. Couple of ground ball outs for Sandy here in the top of the first inning and the bases are empty for the Miami native Manny Machado. One, two is cut on and missed. Curve ball. That was the plan of attack. A four pitch punch out. Three benders. Jill sbound today for San Diego. Coming off a good outing against the Nationals. Five and a third and no walks. He struck out 10. His 21st start trying to improve that record to 4-9. Three from Cease is up and ball four. So Dylan, who did not walk anybody on Friday night, issues a four pitch walk to begin his day here today. And he lays off a fast ball. Ball four. Backto back walks for Dylan Cease to open up the ball game right now. Dylan searching for command. Swing and a miss. And Lopez strikes out. Well, Dylan needed that. Gets him on the slider. First out here in the bottom of the first inning. And now their most dangerous hitter, a left-handed hitter, Kyle Sters. Sters white hot. 11 for his last 23 with six home runs. Nice. And that a strike three gets him looking. Backto-back strikeouts for CE. Two down. Talk about bouncing back. And now backto back K’s after the backto back walks for Dylan Case. So two on and two out for Augustine Ramirez. Two-1 from CE. That one ripped up the middle and that’s down for a base hit. One run surely going to score. Sanchez is being held at third, but X comes in from second base and the Gusbus drives in another. That’s an RBI single. Fish on the board first. One- nothing in the bottom of the first inning. And again, another ball absolutely stung by Augustinine Ramirez. An uncanny ability to constantly get hits with two outs. Jake Croninworth leads off again. Sandy Al Contra. Pitch number 35 on his afternoon is a foul tip held on to by Forez and Croninworth goes down swinging. That’s a third punch out for Sandy and he’s set down the first seven of the ball game. 1-1 is a roller over to second base. No problem for X. Goes down to a knee to fish it out. Pops up, throws to first. There are two men gone. That one cut on and missed. 99 upstairs on a one-two pitch. Sandy Alcantara nine up, nine down with four punch outs. First time through so far in 2025 for Alcantra. Opponents hitting 310. Second time through the order. This is on the ground. Grass cutter into left field. A base hit. First hit of the ball game for the Padres’s as Alcantra had retired the first 10 Padres’s in a row. But Arise with a base hit the other way. And with the reaction from Okantra, it’s like, okay, I’ve seen this act before. This pitch is way off the plate. We know that Luis Horizon is a bad ball hitter. And that that pitch is at least three baseballs off the plate. Arise at first, one out for Manny. Here’s the 01 pitch. Machado takes load outside. Cortez snap throw throws into right field. Or is going to try and go to second. Sanchez has it. The throw and the tag. He’s safe. Bang. Bang. At second base, but Araise sneaks it up. Another 90 ft after the errant throw from Forz. Two and two to Manny. Arise at second. One out. Theado lines it into left field. Here comes a rise around from second base. Manny drives in the Padres’s first run of the day. Tied one to one. Hung the curveball and Manny barrels it up in the left field. Good piece of hitting the era from Fortz turns out big and helping the Padres’s tie his game at one. Senoha leading things off against Dylan CE in the bottom of the fifth inning. One pitch is a chopper to the backhand of the third baseman Machado. He gears up. The throw a little bit low and not plucked out by Cronin work. Low throw. Machado might have been too nonchalant with it and Senoha is aboard to open the inning. So, one down, Senoha first. Sanchez coming up. This is one of those times right here when you’re looking for one of your big boppers in the lineup to change the course of a game and just unload on something. Jesus Sanchez has been known to do that. Sanchez wings and he hits it in the air deep to right field. This is way back and gone. We talked about it. the guy who possesses the ability with one swing to give yourself a nice lead. Number nine on the year for Jesus Sanchez. A little thunder from Sanchez and lightning strikes for the Marlins here in the fifth. And there’s some breathing room for the fish. Two-run shot. 3-1 Marlins. Bottom five. So here we go into the top of the sixth inning. Andy Alcantra putting together today by far maybe and certainly one of his best starts of the year. One run unearned. Come back right back to him. Fires a fast ball to first. One away. One two. That one a sharp roller over to short. Otto’s got it. He stands tall. Tosses to first in time for number two. One two. That one a little roller over to short. Otto picks it up. It was a curveball and a beauty. And Hicks with the high throw holds the bag at first. One, two, three inning, three ground balls. Sandy is settling in. He’s threw six without an earned run. Alcantra twirling a gem. His best of the season. Here’s Manning, one for two. He’s got one of the three Padres’s hits they’ve gathered today. Line to right center field and it’s in for a base hit and it’s by the center fielder Meyers. So, Machado heads to second base. Got himself a one out double. Breaks up a string of six in a row. retired by Alcantra and the Padres’s are bringing the tie run to the plate here in the seventh inning. The one pitch that one hit well out to center that’s taken Meyers back shy of the track. He sets up camp makes the catch and Machado jogging to third base. The throw goes to third but it’s offline and with two outs the Padres’s have Machado at third. Bog guards coming up. This feels like a huge atbat in the scope of this game and it’s in the air to shallow center. There is Dane Meyers. What a wonderful seven inning performance and for the first time this year he’s through seven and it has been a beauty. Seven innings, one run, no earn. The Padres’s have got some work to do. Now they have to deal with the Marlin bullpen. And Jackson Merrill will go lefty to lefty against the new Miami pitcher Josh Simpson. Line to right and center and Sanchez overruns it. Ends up over his head. So to second base goes Merrill. Good start here to the eighth inning and a one hopper to the second baseman. Edwards throws out Cronorth, but taking third is Merrill. Get him on, get him over. Now it’s time to get him in. Looks like a Glacius is going to pinch it here for Tyler Wade on the ground into right field. Base hit. Here comes Merrill from third. It’s a one-run game. Jos Glacius pinch hit. RBI single. Jose Glacius continues to shine. Simpson has faced three batters. That will be all. Calvin Fochch is on in relief of Josh Simpson. So it will be Tatis to go up against Foscher. Fernando gets a base hit into right field and got off the glove of Wagaman and up the second base goes to Glacius. Fernando aboard. Inning continues and that brings up Luis Arise with a tying run in scoring position. And that’s never a place that you want to see Arise. That one lined into center field. It’s hanging up for Dne Meyers underneath. He makes the catch and that strands two going lefty to lefty here against Stard that hit him. That hit Kyle. It was a sinker at 89 that got him on the inside of the left elbow and he’s in a lot of pain right now. Kyle grimacing. Here comes Clayton and Brad Larosa, one of the trainers for the Marlins. And they’re going to check on Sters. That got him in a not great spot at all. Yeah. Hopefully it just like hits him on that funny bone and it and it kind of zaps your arm and it’s all go go go go goes numb and maybe he’s trying to work it and hopefully that’s it and it’s nothing more serious. Yeah, Sters continues to shake it off. He’s he’s clearly still in a lot of pain right now, but Sters is going to run for himself. Runner on first, one away. A ground ball to third. Manny’s got it. Fires to second. That’s one. Eglacius’s turn is perfect. And in time, a double play to end the inning. It’s 3-2 Marlins. Calvin Foch got the last two outs to the eighth. We could very well be hunting a five out save here. And there’s two away here in the ninth. So it’ll be left up to Xander Bogarts. The 1-1 is lined softly into right field. Here comes Sanchez. He’s got it. This baby is over. The Marlins win the series from the Padres’s with a 3-2 victory this

Can we win a series against the Brewers? Happy with the performance by the Fish Lately
Stowers must have the dirtiest helmet in all of MLB! 🤣
As a marlins fan Ty SD you guys will get exposed by the dodgers in the playoffs again and to lose to my marlins on the road embarrassing Ladres lmao. Also this was Sandy’s best start of 25 since his Cy Young season that’s the Sandy we all know and love onto the brewers.
Nice to see Stowers in the clean-up spot, finally
This is the Sandy we know and love
Alcantara Alcatraz
Glad to see they're showing starting pitcher stats again. Hopefully they continue.
And the Marlins are being a pleasure to watch !
i was scared when i realized sandy was pitching. glad he figured it out
The Marlins are in a prime position to be sellers at the trade deadline, but it appears they have identified their core moving forward, and these players won't be on the move unless an offer blows away the front office. Improving Marlins now looking to build around promising young players Kyle Stowers, Agustin Ramirez and Eury Perez. Expected to listen for trades on Edward Cabrera, Sandy Alcantara, Jesus Sanchez, and Anthony Bender.
