so almost ready to get underway and on the mound for Washington in this one. Mike Soka Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. a lot more guys striking out today. But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it out front with the swing. And that is strike one. pitch is in there. One and two. See if you can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. It’s through for a hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself ahead. Now, the number two hitter, Matt Mlan [Music] that finds the mark on the inside corner. Soka goes 6′ 5 in, 250 lbs. He joined the team as a free agent. Come on. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. That misses and it’s two and two. outside with a breaking ball. Fredel gets his lead at first. Nobody out. That one drilled left field and it stays fair into second with a double. And they’ve got something brewing now. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Ellie Dea Cruz getting ready to hit. Golden opportunity right here. Swinging a miss as he was late. One strike. Two runners in scoring position. Nobody out. Gets the slider in there for a strike. Got him swinging. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base and the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there and deal with the next guy. And now it’s Austin Hayes that’s in there. It’s 0 and one. swing and a miss and he got him to chase. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. One runs in. Here’s the throw to the plate, but it’s offline. He will score and they take a two-run lead. That’s a big at bat coming through in the clutch to drive in a pair. Just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down. One down. Next for Cincinnati, Spencer Steer inside corner for a strike. Good one. [Music] Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spin on anything that’s down. And here it comes. Swing and a miss. Stuck him out. Went back to the slider and it was a good idea. No need to deviate from the slider right there. The hitter just not making the adjustment. He came at him with the breaking ball. Pitch after pitch in that at bat and evidently there was no answer for it. Swinging a ground ball over to Low and that is the inning. They get two runs on three hits, no errors, and one left. Bottom half of inning number one coming up. It’s the Reds two and the Nats coming to bat. Back here in Nationals Park and on the hill here today, Nick Ledo. Well, he’s putting together a really nice season on the mound. Erra in the low threes. Very respectable when you consider guys are looking to do damage. They’re not trying to just walk and hit singles. They’re trying to hit homers and draw walks and score runs. So, when you have a guy that can limit the other team from scoring more than a few runs, that’s really tough to beat game in and game out. digging in. CJ Abrams with a short stop. Takes the ball. This one in the air. Leo makes the catch and there’s one gone. as we take a look at the Nationals lineup. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Dalon Lyle. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. James Wood batting with one down takes a strike. Lollo, he’s the kind of starter that a lot of pitching coaches and managers as well really appreciate. Not a guy who’s going to get himself into trouble by dancing around by walking guys. And that one in the air center field. Fredel snags it and there’s two away. Hey man, four pitches, two outs. That is an excellent base. second base. Two down, base is empty. And now it’s Luis Garcia. Yeah, he throws strikes and you know, he’s got the command to be in the zone, be effective, but just moving the ball around, getting the ball back from the catcher boot and throwing the pitch. And that one sliced fouled. It’s an interesting thing when you consider limiting walks. Is it more important today because of how many home runs are being hit? No doubt. Keeping players off the base pass with the way the swings and the launch angles are today. The emphasis of hitting home runs is so huge. It’s never been more important. Two down to that one pushed to the left and fouled. Yeah, I think the other part though as well is it goes both ways because I think the guys at times are more than willing to give up walks and he got him. Strike three and that’ll retire the side. Nothing doing it for Washington. They trail it here. Two nothing. Back in Washington DC. New inning getting started. Now it’s the Red’s DH. Tyler Stevenson. Sroa back to work and a base hit up the middle and the leadoff man aboarding Jose Trevino. Here’s Jose Trevinho. That breaking ball drops in for a strike. Ruer at first with no outs here. Right back to the mound. Could be an easy two to second. There’s one. back to first and that is a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati, Santiago Espol. And that one fouled off. Two out. Space is empty. [Music] It’s strike two. This guy’s not wasting any pitches. Hitters got to get into swing mode. This is a good time to expand the zone. Throw something maybe down in the dirt. To the right side. Whips it to first. Third out. Reds go down quietly, but they hold a two nothing lead. Bottom of the second. Josh Bell at the plate now. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. [Music] Ground ball right side, handles, throws to first. One up, one down. Nathaniel, here’s Nathaniel Low. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. And the first pitch misses for ball one liner base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. A late jump and I think that was the difference on the play. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. House. Brady House will hit next. And that is downstairs. Ball one. Low the base runner at first with one out. Breaking ball misses down and away. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. Swinging a foul out of play [Music] and he chases a high fast there. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Struck him out looking. Couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball at the knees. Don Lyle digging in for the Nationals. Checks his swing. Appeal to third. And yes, he offered at it. 01 now. Gets him to chase after that one. He’s at a great spot right here ahead in the count. 02. All four pitches in play right here, partner. Two outs. Swing and a miss. And he got him. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. So no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. We play two full. It’s the Reds two and the Nationals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the start of the inning. Now here’s the Red’s leadoff man, TJ Fredel. This one smoked out to left. Makes the catch for the and there’s one down. Now batting second Matt Mlan in now for the Reds. Matt Mlan a double and a run scored his first time up and that one is downstairs and that is ball one. [Music] A swing and a miss and that’s strike one. Strike two. All sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. That one missed swing and a highf fly ball left field. Wood two down. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Dela Cruz takes load. Second trip to the plate in this one. Next offering is fouled back. Two down. Doon and that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Fouls one off. Two and two. swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strike out. And one, two, three go the Reds. They’re up two nothing. Set for the bottom of the third. And it’s the catcher for the Nationals, Riley Adams. Adams. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. And a foul ball. Now a screamer into the outfield. And there’s one away. [Music] So digging in, Jacob Young singing he’s never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire career. Yeah, that’s fouled off. and he lays down a punt and he bare handhands it the throw. Not any time. That’s a bunt single. His speed was just clearly the difference on this play. Boog. I mean, he laid down the bunt as far away from first as possible and flew down the line. Almost got him, but not this time. Here’s CJ Abrams now. He popped out his first time. Here’s the pitch. Run around the goal. That’s in for a strike. Throw a second. Great jump. And that is a stolen base. It wasn’t even close. Well, we all know this team is struggling right now and sometimes you just got to do something different to generate some offense. A little more aggressive right there to put the pressure on the opponent. We’ll see if it pays off on the scoreboard for this team. Up and in. And a count even one and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. Come on, man. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He’s notched four strikeouts now. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. next to hit James Wood fly to center his first time. He’s 0 for one. Check swing and he went. That’s strike one. Rudder at second. Two down here in the last half of the third. Dives, but it kicks off his blow. The throw comes in too late and they don’t get the out. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. That’s one of those you classify as just too hot to handle. Hit it on the screws and it couldn’t be fielded cleanly, but you can’t really blame the defense in that case. So up next, Luis Garcia swinging drive deep right field. Espenol on the move heading back. Can’t get to it as it drops in the corner. Here comes Wood around third. He’ll score and they tie it. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run, scoring it back. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. So, runner at second, two down. Here’s Josh Bell 0 for one so far. Swing and a miss as he was out front. One strike. Swing and a miss. I think he was sitting off speed there. Foul ball still 0 and two. Garcia at second with two down. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Ball one there. One ball, two strikes. Two balls, two strikes to count with two outs. And that one is inside. Nathaniel Low in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. So now two on and two outs. That’s a tough one to swallow right there. If you’re on the mound, you’re ahead in the count 02 and you just couldn’t find a way to put him away. It’s going to be frustrating if that one comes back to bite him. Low in the box now. Takes strike one. Out to center. Fredel under this one and that will end the inning, but they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. Two two game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back. John Champi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Austin Hayes. Let’s go. And that’s way high. One and0. Hayes 29 years old and he was a third round pick back in 2016. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Two and0. on the ground right side over to low and one gone in the fourth as they get the lead off man. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Next for Cincinnati, Spencer Steer went down on strikes his first time through. That one outside and that’s ball one. One ball. No strike. That one back up the middle and it gets through. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Noelv Marte the next to hit for the Reds. He’s over for one. Sroa throw over. Steer back on a dive right down to shoot. Strike one man at first. One away. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. Snags it for the second out. Tyler Stevenson. Tyler Stevenson the next to hit for the Reds. One for one with a single so far. Throw over to first. Steer back in on a dive in for a strike. Go and one. Well, we call that keyhole. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good if he doesn’t. Rudder takes off. Ball misses. Throw save. Well, with that kind of elite arm he has behind the plate, man, it’s a pretty big deal when you can swipe a bag against this dude. Maybe more than anything, it prevents teams from just testing him, thinking that they can even steal a base. But right here, they successfully move that runner up to scoring position. Good job. The next pitch misses two and one. Runner at second. Two down. Just missed. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Next offering is fouled back. Man on second, two down. slang and a miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. To the bottom of inning number four. Now we are tied 2-2. Bottom four. Now the third baseman, Brady House. How out towards left center. Fredel settles under and there’s one down. And now here’s a speed threat outfielder Jaylen Lyle. His first at bat was a strikeout. on the corner for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Man, I mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Swings and lines a base hit into left field. He was all over that one. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Now here is Riley Adams. And that one fouled off. 0 and two now. Battling here as he fouls it away. Lyall leads off first with one away. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. just off the outside part of the plate. Well, I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. Got him swinging now. Five strikeouts for him on the mound. And now Jacob Young. A single and a run scored and a walk. Run around to go. Pitch outside. Throw there. Safe. Chris, his wheels were the difference maker on that play. Just got in there. Yeah, with Statcast’s help, we see his top speed on this stolen base. And that’s a big number. I mean, man, he really made his athleticism work for him on that one. Yeah, there’s a ball. Well, out there on the mound, he’s got to go right after this hitter because you don’t want to turn this lineup over. This is the guy that you’ve got to get that final out, get out of this inning. Man at second and that one fouled off. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed. A base hit, it’s probably going to be a big run, so you really have to execute on the mound. And that misses. And that’s ball three. CJ Abrams in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. Two outs and one in scored position. Sway and a miss. And that is that. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Back here in Nationals Park. And here’s the catcher, Jose Trevinho. Sarroa back to work. Line and a base hit into right. So a man on base to start the inning. That is right Santiago Esp. Santiago Espol digs in now. Grounded out his first time up. that misses the zone and it’s one and another ball. And that drops in for a strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. Check swing called strike. Line drive. Come on. to put a really good swing on that pitch and hit the ball hard. You know, line drives won’t always find a hole, but the more you can hit the ball like that with good exit below, the better off you’re going to be in the long run. Now at the plate, TJ Fredel singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. The Nets trying to keep this a two- two game. And we’re in the top of the fifth. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That one missing inside. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put them away. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Matt Mlan one for two. First pitch misses and that is out of play. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at in a one count. Just not able to square it up. swing and a highf fly ball deep left field way back there makes the catch on the edge of the track. saw they can’t do anything with the leadoff single there. Last half of the fifth coming up, we are tied 2-2. Back in Washington DC, bottom of the inning. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. J Abrams right through there for a strike. Well, these Nats as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. fouls that off to the left and will do it again inside now. One and two fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. And now up for Washington, James Wood. You talk about the power and the speed together. Well, we knew he was going to be a stud just coming up. Making his way through the minor leagues and quickly at this level an impact player. Sliced hard but fouled. One out. Base is empty. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. Couple of hits in a row for him here. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Luis Garcia the next to hit. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Double play ball to second. There’s one. And that’s two. Well, the second base made that one look easy. Great feed to the shortstop. Shortstop completes the play. They get out of a jam and they end the inning. Top of the sixth inning. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop Ellie Dea Cruz. Well, you got to give him credit out there on the mound. This outing started off a little shaky, but he’s found a way to settle in and turned this into a pretty good start. Kind of shows you a lot about his mental makeup as a pitcher. Bounced up the middle on the run. sends it over to first and very nicely done for the out. Austin Hayes. Now it’s going to be Austin Hayes. First offering misses badly for ball one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Jose A. Ferrer looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Chaffen getting cranked up as well. Off the mark there and now two and0. All tied up and we’re the top half of the sixth. And another ball. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. And that’s ball four. tried another slider but had it missed the plate. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. Spencer Steer now at the plate. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there, but left the bat on his shoulder. Pitch misses there. And one and one. And that’s downstairs and outside. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So I think the confidence level is raised right here. That one misses. They’re down three and one on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo, [Music] swings and misses. Now three and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Swang at a line drive. That’s a base hit into center field. Just kind of slice that one into center. Well, that was an important at bat in this game. So, great job there stepping up to the challenge. Not a bad slider by any means. It was down and away, but an even better job to spoil that thing. And he let it travel. Didn’t try to hook it. Man, that’s a really good approach. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. Here comes the skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Mike Siroka departs and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. On the mound now, Jake Irvin coming on to face a righty here and he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Two on, one out in now for the Reds. Noelv Marte. Called strike. A sinker at the bottom of the zone. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. On the ground to the left. House to second for one. And that’s quick work out of the pen. One batter, two outs in an over. Poetry in motion there as the second base turns the double play. Nice throw to first and that’s the way to end the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] Breaking ball in there for a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Sam Mole up and throwing for Terry Francona. Rogers also getting ready. [Music] And ball one. That’s a little high now. Two and two. Two. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Music] Pitch misses there and the count’s full. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another swing and a ball lifted left field. He makes the grab and there’s one away. That is Nathaniel Low up to hit. just missed. Base is empty, one away here in the bottom of the six. And another ball. Foul ball there. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Brady House digging in for the Nationals. Bowl for two in this one. Check swing on the first pitch. Appeal down to first. No swing. Pretty impressive. We haven’t seen that pitch from him much, but he’s got a really good feel when he throws it. Fouls it off. Still one and two. hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Offense held in check there. We’re through six full. We are tied 2-2. And we’re back. Now it’s the DH Tyler Stevenson. [Music] fouled off left side. Urban measures 6 feet 6 in. He features a fourseam fast ball, a slur, a sinker, a cutter, and he works in a change up and it finds its way through for a hit. Had a good start to the inning. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Go ahead run on base. And now the catcher comes up to him. Jose Trevinho swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. The go-ahead run aboard at first. Nobody out. Swing and a line drive slicing into right field. Throw holds him at second, but the go-ahead run now in scoring position and still nobody out. Two consecutive base hits for this team. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep, took the barrel right to it, and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Now a huge bat in this game coming up. So the go-ahehead run is into scoring position. Espenol getting ready to hit. House to second. That’s one. It’s a double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Here’s the center fielder TJ Fredel. One for three. That just misses. Ball one. [Music] Two outs. That one’s in there. And the count one and one. [Music] Now a highf fly ball out to left center. Wood sizing this one up. And that’s the third out. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Sam Mole. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Up now for Washington. Dalen Ly. Little surprised we don’t see a pinch hitter here, but the lefty lefty matchup. There’s the strike of the knees. Now one and one. That’s good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Music] Ground ball left side and that’s just fouled. [Music] And that’s in the dirt. And that’s ball two. Got him. Outside pitch got the better of him that time. Next to hit for the Nats, Riley Adams. First pitch doesn’t find a zone. fought off foul. [Music] All right, here we go. swing and a popup foul territory for the catcher and he makes the catch and that quickly two away. That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there. Hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him. Instead of a line drive or something hit deep, it’s a popup and an easy out for the defense. And a foul ball way high there. And now it’s even one and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. outside and that’s ball two. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the seventh. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball three. CJ Abrams in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two down. Nobody on. Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. Gets a piece and stays alive. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Grinding AB right here. About to see pitch number 10. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like, but you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s going to blink first. Swing and a miss. Had him out front for the strikeout. Nothing across here this half. We look ahead to inning number eight. We are tied 2-2. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Jose a Ferrer. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. So digging in Matt Mlan. That one’s in there. One activity in the Washington bullpen. Kyle Finnean looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. [Music] This one popped up. Foul ground first base side has room and he makes the catch. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. A short stop takes a ball. You can expect this hitter to be looking for something on a TE. He can get up in the air and untie this ball game. And a ground ball to first. Low steps on the bag. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Austin Hayes digs in now. First pitch just misses. All tied up and we’re in the top of the eighth. Ground ball right side and foul ball. [Applause] That one misses the countdown two and two. [Music] Got him looking and the Reds go one, two, three. Nobody left for Cincinnati. Score remains deadlocked at 22. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Taylor Rogers. Well, walks have certainly been an issue for him this season, so we’ll see what kind of command he has. CJ Abrams digging in for the Nationals. 0 for three in this one. Abs. That one missed. and a count. One and two. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Swing and a miss and he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat. Well, we saw a solid effort out of their starter and the bullpen is following suit. It’s just a good day as a manager or as a pitching coach when you can hand the ball off to multiple arms and get stability from all of their performances. And now up for Washington, Jameswood. Pitch misses inside. Ball one. went with the sweeper for the strike. Action in the pen down there. Brent Sudter up and throwing for Terry Francona. [Music] swaying at a line drive ripped out of the right center. That’s a base hit. Now he turns and heads for second. Here’s the throw and he’s into second base with one away as the go ahead run. Clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. As a hitter, there’s not a whole lot better of a feeling than a double into the gap. Right off the bat, you know you put a great swing on the base. A lot riding on this next at bat now as they look to take the lead at a critical point in this one. One out, runner at second. Up now for Washington. Luis Garcia. Ball one. One and0. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. Outside low and a count is two and 0. Late swing fouled to the left. [Music] Ground ball up the middle. Dela Cruz and he can’t come up with it. Substitution being made at first. Entering is the pinch runner, Ahmed Rosario. Next is the designated hitter, Josh Bell. With pretty good speed over there at first base. I think the pitcher’s got to slow everything down. hold the ball a little bit, step off, just try to break the rhythm and timing of a potential base dealer in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring close but called the ball and that is ball one with a go ahead run at third here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Just missed. Good spot for the hitter. definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. That misses the zone and it’s three and0. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. And there’s the automatic [Music] to the right side. Boots it. Wood scores. Still able to fire over. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. First and second, one out. Nathaniel Low the next to hit. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. And there’s a foul ball. Rousario the lead runner at second. Bell at first. One gone. And now the count one and two after the swing and the miss. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. That was pretty nasty. We’re going to take a look at the pitch sequence of that at bat. And the thing to notice are the pitch locations. Every single one of them on the edges of the strike zone. And as a hitter, that can be pretty frustrating because you don’t expect the pitcher to be able to make quality pitches one after another like that. And so those are tough spots to do damage. And a great demonstration of pitch command. And it got him a punch out that time. Now here is Brady House. Had a big swing and a miss. One strike. That’s inside. Two on. Two outs. Next pitch misses outside and two and one. It’s a big opportunity right here, but I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. Not close with that one. Three and one. Dalen Lyall up next for Washington. And there’s a strike on the outside corner and two [Music] and they’re all loaded up. Oh, this is their chance to break it open. If they don’t end up winning this ball game, they’re going to look back at this opportunity right here and have some regret. Two outs, bases full. Dalen Lyall will hit next. Yeah, don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score two. Check. Swang. He held up. One and0. and this is inside. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. 200. Swing get a ball popped up. Mlan brings it in and that ends the inning. So they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Nationals three and the Reds two. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Kyle Finnegan. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and you see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure, this one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save. And now the first baseman Spencer Steer corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. And that’s a little bit high. And that’s ball one. to the left side, but it is well fouled. Looking to get the tying run on base. Swinging a ball hit out towards left center field. And that’ll get down for a hit. Well, that at bat had a lot of pressure riding on it. So, really great job coming through right there. It’s got to feel good. Hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Next for Cincinnati, Noel V Marte. Now move to first. That’s in for a strike. One. And that one gets past the catcher. as a closer. He’s out there in that role for a reason, but even may lose the handle on one here and there, especially with all the nasty stuff coming out of bullpens these days. He’s making it a little interesting here. and fouled off. Little Tardy on that fast ball. He’s going to have to get it going a little quicker. Get that front foot down. Outside low and the count is two and two. swing and a highf fly ball left field. Wood sizes this one up and it’s caught for the out. Now batting the designated Tyler Stevenson. He’s two outs away. Tyler Stevenson the next to hit for the Reds. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. One- run game here in the top of the ninth. Swinging a highf fly ball out there towards left field. Hauls it in. And there’s two away. Reds down to their final out. Jose Trevinho the next to hit for the Reds trying to deliver as the hero. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. a oneun lead here at the top of the dyke. Got the bat going too soon at strike two. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing and miss and get through this at bat in the dirt but kept close. Tag save. He’s into third on the wild pitch. as a closer. He’s out there in that role for a reason, but even may lose the handle on one here and there, especially with all the nasty stuff coming out of bullpens these days. He’s making it a little interesting here. This could end it up the middle. Abrams [Applause] throw the to ball game and the Nationals strand the tying run on base to win. I’d say you’re lying if you say you don’t feel a fivegame losing streak. This W definitely helps them relax a little bit and take some of the pressure off from it going to a six, seven, or even an eightgame losing streak. 32 the final score. They hang on to win it by a run. for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
