MLB LIVE🔴 Houston Astros vs Arizona Diamondbacks – Jul 23, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

just about to get underway and on the hill in this one. Brandon F. What do we need to know here? Well, that whip is just below the league average and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. Ready to go. Here’s the third baseman, Isak Paredus. [Applause] And that one is downstairs. And we’re underway. [Music] On the ground to short. [Applause] Throws to first in time. and an easy out to start the game. Take a look at the lineup. They do a lot of things well in this offense, Singi. They control the strike zone. They make pitchers work hard for outs. And as a result, one of the better OBP teams in the league. Well, what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy. Whether you go to instructional league, whether you go to spring training, you see these players even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter. They’re practicing that type of approach. Boo. And when you have that filtering through the organization, even when you call off a player, they step right in and continue with the pattern that they have established at this level, which ultimately leads to a lot of success. Next pitch is outside. You know, you translate on base percentage, it’s basically this teams that have a high on base percentage, they don’t make outs at a very high rate. As my buddy Joe Sheen says, OBP is life. That one the other way and a base hit right there. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Batting third left fielder Jose Altuve. Here’s the former MVP Jose Altuve. He’s been on fire at the dish lately, hitting better than 350 this month. That one misses. Ball one. Altuve has a lot of history with the Astros. In fact, he’s played so many seasons in Houston that he’s the only player to be named an all-star in both leagues while playing for the same team. You know, Buoube goes back all the way to those Astros days in the NL Central before they move to the AL West. Ground ball left side. Could be two. There’s one. What a double play that was. Inning over. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. On to the bottom of the first. No score after a half inning. back here at Chase Field and today on the hill, Brandon Walter. What should we keep an eye on here? And a guy like this is going to keep you in the ball game. He’s going to go out there, compete, not going to see a whole lot of flare and flash, but he’s going to hand it over to the bullpen at some point. And if you’ve been able to score a few runs, you’ll be in it late. So, we’ll see if he’s able to do that for his club in this one. And now the right fielder, Corbin Carroll. Corin Carol liner base hit man aboard on the leadoff single. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Nice line drive to the full side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Peraldo Pomo. There’s a strike. Walter in his rookie season, 28 years old. He’s one of the few Major League Baseball players born in the state of Delaware. Carol on to first. Nobody out. The other way and there’s one away. Betting third. Now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavll. This team can really pile up the runs, Chris. They’re among the top teams in scoring this year. Yeah. And when you can get a lead and be out in front, it really changes what that opposing manager can do with the bullpen. And on top of that, it helps your own pitching staff. It gives them more margin for errors. So instead of pitchers squeezing the ball, trying to throw darts and be perfect, they can relax, let the ball come out of their hands, and pitch effectively. So that offense and the ability to score runs also helps the pitching and the defense. Let’s go back. Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. [Music] Here comes the one. Ruer takes off. Pitch in for a strike. Throw a save. That’s a stolen base. I think that steel kind of sets the tone not just for this game but for the entire series. First inning, game one. So that kind of tells me they’re going to be aggressive on offense and try to force the issue whenever they can. One out and a runner at second. Next pitch downstairs. Going to count one and two. Recognize that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Gets a piece and stays alive. Next pitch misses way outside. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] and ball four to a board. Now, this was a story we were paying attention to before the game. We’ve seen him give up walks in the past and it’s an issue once again early on. Here’s Josh Naylor [Applause] and the first pitch misses for ball one. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. [Applause] Runners at first and second with one gone. Hit in the air. Left field squeezes it. Two away. Batting fifth. Third baseman. Audio Suarez. Auheno Suarez up to the plate now. Definitely scuffling at the dish lately. Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month. [Applause] And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. Two on, two outs. Fouled off. He was late. [Applause] and one and two. Then he really sells the change up with that arm action. Two straight and the one two misses to even the count. [Applause] And that one inside and it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Adrien Del Castillo stands in now for the Diamondbacks that takes a corner. [Music] [Applause] and fouled off. Base is loaded. Two down. [Applause] Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Two outs. Not close with that one. And the count is one and two. [Applause] And that’s outside. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. That one misses and now it’s three and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. Ball four and a run comes in to score. Could have got himself into a mess out there and now forces home a run with the wall. This inning’s definitely getting away from him. Blaze Alexander digs in now. [Applause] Swang and a miss. That’s strike one. 01’s the count and a pitch. Late on that fast ball. All you got to do is concentrate and execute this next pitch. Get yourself out of the jam, back into the dugout. missed with a change up and the count one and two [Applause] hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. So they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded. Onto the second inning here in the desert. It’s the Diamondbacks one and the Astros nothing. Second inning to go. And here now is the Astros cleanup hitter Christian Walker. [Music] Fought back to work. line drive and this might be trouble. Now he’ll turn for second and he’s there with a leadoff double. Wastes no time there. Double into the gap and that was a really nice swing to beat the inside pitch. He just beat him to the spot. Kept his hands tight inside that baseball and that just allowed him to drive it into the alley right there. Vic Keratini at the plate. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Tying run in scoring position here in the top of the second. And another ball. Patrick Johnson behind the plate. Patty Johnson to Sunboo. I’d ask permission first before I called him. That does a pretty good job back there. Occasionally, we’ll see a couple of sideways looks from players, but that kind of comes with the territory, right? Come on back. Swinging a foul straight back. cut out and miss. Struck him out. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strike out and there’s one away. Gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation. It’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball. Those high fast balls, they kind of look like that one ripped right center field. High bounce takes it over the fence. That’s an automatic double as a run scores on the play and that ties the game. He puts a great swing on that pitch and drives home the run. And that was always going to be a double. But the bounce over the wall just took the guesswork out of it right away. It was a nice swing. One out, runner at second. Trel now at the plate. Highfly ball down the left field line. Going back. Banks off the wall. Coming home. He’ll score and the Astros take the lead. That’s two consecutive extra base hits for this team. So close to blasting that one out of here. the other way. But that’s very tough to do when you take on the outfield gap like that. Beautiful swing though. Let the ball get a little deep and drove it to the opposite field. Here’s Mauricio Dubon. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. There’s the strike. [Applause] [Applause] Oh, that’s outside on the ground out to short over to first and there’s two down. [Applause] Now it’s the second base, Bryce Matthews. Bryce Matthews. And that’s downstairs. And it’s one and0. Next offering is fouled back. Runner at second. Two down. [Applause] This to third. Tosses across the first. They limit the damage here, but two runs for him and they jump ahead. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Astros two and the Diamondbacks one. We head to the bottom of the second. Alec Thomas now center fielder Alec Thomas pitch is in there. It’s 0 and one. 0 and one. Just missed. That’s inside. Inside ground ball right side and that’s just fouled. That’s way outside and it’s three and two. [Applause] Swing and a pop off in foul ground and he makes the catch. One away. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think you tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Jose Herrera the next to hit. Slider clips the zone. Man, I mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. One out. Base is empty. [Music] in the air out to center. Trel gliding in towards the infield. Nice grab on the run and there’s two away. Nothing instills more confidence in a team than a center fielder who makes a great play like that on the run. They can feed off the energy he brings just from his playmaking abilities. And first offering is fouled off. And a breaking ball misses outside. Two out. Space is empty. So a foul ball makes it one and two. lined into left center and that should be extra bases around first. Heading for two in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. He went up there and got it with two strikes. I’m not going to leave this in the umpire’s hands. I’m going to be aggressive. It was in a location where he could get those arms extended that he loves to do. So, nice job right there coming back in that bat. Heraldo Purdomo getting ready to hit. He’s 0 for one. That clips the zone and it’s 0 and one. Man on second, two down. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. saw they can’t do anything with a two-out double. We played two full. It’s the Astros two and the Diamondbacks won. New inning getting started for the third base. That was the sweeper, but it missed. That one fouled off. That’s down and in. Next pitch is outside. Out to short. Purdomo. Throws across the diamond and one away in the top of the third. Now batting right fielder Cam Smith. Cam Smith up next for the Astros. One for one with a single so far. Close but called a ball. And that’s ball one. He swings and fouls one off. Some real good life going through the zone on that one. the one-1 out to center. Thomas makes the grab and there’s two gone. Now batting left fielder Jose Altuve. Jose Altuve up to hit here. He hit into a double play his first time up. Sliced hard but foul. All right. Two down. Nobody on off the plate. Ball one. And now one and two. [Applause] Next offering misses down and away. And there’s a ball fouled off again and it remains three and two. bows that off to the left and will do it again. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Swings and misses. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. set for the bottom of the third. And now here is Lordis Giel Jr. Lordis Guriel Jr. Guriel gets a piece line drive caught. Nothing you can do about those as a hitter. Even though you know that they still drive you absolutely crazy. And now it’s Josh Naylor flying to left his first time. [Applause] right through there for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And that one upstairs. Ball one. One ball, one strike. Late on that fast ball. One ball, two strike. [Applause] line drive, whips it across and two straight set down to begin the bottom of the third. Now batting third baseman, Au Haneio Suarez. Audio Suarez up to hit now. Well, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip and the matchup is very favorable. And first offering is fouled off. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. going to count one and two. Rarely will you see a pitcher just to waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out. This one in the air. Dubong on his way over. And that is that. No runs, no hits, no errors. On to inning number four. It’s the Astros two and the Diamondbacks won as we go to the top of the fourth. And stepping in for the Astros, Christian Walker. Walker in his seventh season, 33 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. [Applause] Well, he missed a hitable offspe pitch right there. Not sure exactly with the timing. Sometimes you get a backup breaking ball. You’re expecting it to make its move in the end. It never does and you’re tied up. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right there. Victor. Next is the DH, a switch hitter. Victor Keratini struck out swinging his first time. In the air, center field. Thomas sizing it up, puts it away for the out. And there are two outs. Now batting catcher Yiner Diaz. Two down, base is empty. So next up for Houston, Yiner Diaz doubled in his first AB. Check swing called strike. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Next pitch is outside. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Up and in. And it’s two and two. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Swing and a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Now batting the center fielder, Taylor Trl. Here’s Taylor Trel. Doubled his first time and a foul ball. And a sweeper misses for a ball. Diaz off of first with two away. Late on that fast ball. One ball, two strikes. [Applause] Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Music] Two outs. Cut out and miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. So the Astros leave one, but they still lead it two to one. Back here in the desert at the plate. Adrien Del Castillo. designated hitter Adrien Del Castillo first offering and it just misses. You know, these Dbacks showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense. Swinging a ground ball, Dubong. whips it to first and one gone in the fourth as they get the lead off. Man, I love how guys at this level are able to slow the game down whether it’s in the batters box or on defense. And right there, that was a good job of knowing just how much time he had. We talk about that internal clock. He was able to gather himself, get a good grip, and make an accurate throw across the diamond. Line drive and foul ball. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. [Music] That’s too low. And the count is one and one. That clips the inside corner for a strike. The Dbacks trailing by a run. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That one the other way and it stays fair. Makes the turn and heads for second. And now the tying run is into scoring position. Good two- strike hitting right there, B. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. Now a chance for Alec Thomas. Fast is outside. As a pitcher, you know the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So you really have to execute on the mound. [Applause] ball in the dirt and the runner holds. [Applause] That misses the zone and that’s ball three. Well, this is a little tough for the hitter in the back of the mind. You’re wondering with first base open, am I going to get a pitch to hit? Got to stay back. Let your hands work. Stay in the middle of the field. Next offering is in for a strike [Applause] up the middle. Matthews tosses to first. Two gone. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Jose Herrera stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Come on. [Applause] And that’s downstairs and outside. There’s the strike. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] That one catches the corner for a strike inside. Almost got him. Two outs with a runner at third. [Applause] This one lifted in the air left field and that ends the inning. One left for Arizona and they trail it here two to one. All set for the start of the inning. And stepping in for the Astros, Mauricio Dubon. Thought back to work. Just missed. That one fouled hard the other way. Just missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it broken back as you drag out to the dugout. Got him. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. We’re going to take a look at the pitch sequence of that at bat. And the thing to notice are the pitch locations. Every single one of them on the edges of the strike zone. And as a hitter, that can be pretty frustrating because you don’t expect the pitcher to be able to make quality pitches one after another like that. And so those are tough spots to do damage in a great demonstration of pitch command. And it got him a punch out that time. And the batter now Bryce Matthews base hit. So that will bring up the top of the order with one away. Up next for the Astros third base. So the lineup flips over next to hit Isach Paredus. He’s grounded out a couple of times. Just missed. Thaw picks to first and he’s back in easily. Matthews stands at first with one out. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes. That’s in for a strike. The throw tag and he’s out. And a swing in a miss there. One ball, two straight ball. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Nothing doing there for Houston. They lead it 2-1. And we’re back. This is Corbin Carroll taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. activity in the bullpen for the Astros for the first time. From Valdez, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Brown getting cranked up as well. [Applause] You know, this guy’s great speed is in the back of that pitcher’s mind. If he can get on, it’s going to give him one more thing he’s got to think about. Really going after him here. all fast balls to get ahead in the count. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and the count’s even at two. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. Fights it off. He’ll see another [Applause] Adam looking and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Well, big strikeout right there and maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. And here is Peraldo Peromo. Two down. Up next for the Diamondback and it’s Lordis Gore Jr. Lordis Goreel Jr. [Music] And first pitch fast ball is in for a strike and misses inside. Check swing. No appeal. Two and one. Foul ball. The Diamondbacks down by a run. Last half of inning number five. And look out. That one gets him. The second man he’s plunked in this one. Now Daddy Naylor. [Applause] That one’s in there. And one’s the count. [Music] Try to get him to chase on the change up that time. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] drilled in the air high and deep right field. Smith ranging back. He’s there. He’s got it. And the inning is over. One left for the Diamondbacks. They’re down two to one. And welcome back to the ballpark. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Now here is Cam Smith. Soft contact in the air and a base hit and a good start to the inning. Anything but pretty right there, but he’ll take it every time. Kind of got it off the end of the bat, but he gets that knock because he was willing to go with the pitch on the outside part of the plate. Here’s the left fielder, Jose Altuve. 0 for two in this one. Here’s the pitch. Run around the goal. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. Late on that fast ball. Double barreled action in the bullpen. Kevin Ginkle getting ready to go. Diffani warming up as well. Rudder at first with no outs here. Swing and this one’s bounced on the ground. The throw to first and they get out for the out. Now Daddy first baseman Christian Walker. Now the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Brandon Faulk gives way and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching Anthony gets the call from the pen. And that’s a big potential run out there at second as he comes in trying to keep the deficit where it is. For the infielders, they got to be thinking about keeping the ball from getting by them into the outfield any way they can. And now it’s Christian Walker, one for two. One of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first. He is that good with the glove. You’re talking about top of the list elite defensive first baseman. And that one is downstairs. And that is ball one. First baseman are involved in just about every single play. So, when you have somebody so solid over there, uh, you can breathe a little easier. The other thing about an elite defensive first baseman like him, it it just instills a ton of confidence in those guys playing third and short that have to make those long tough throws at times. And he just handles them so well. So, he really makes the entire infield better with his glove in the dirt. Smith the runner at second with one away. Off the mark there. Three and two now. on now. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, hit the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it. Victor Keratini up next for the Astros. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Brother at second, two down and we’re the top half of the six. on the ground right side and it goes just fouled. Man at second. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. just misses with that one. [Music] And that’s outside. Two and two. Ground ball right side Alexander to first that ends the frame. Nice work from the snake pen there. We go to the bottom half of inning number six and the 567 slots do up. It’s the Astros two and the Diamondbacks one. Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Hunter Brown. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. Well, one- run game. Auheno Suarez stands in for the Diamondbacks. Suarez. [Applause] That’s in there. Strike one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Brian Abrau, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. Nerys getting loose as well. Way out front for strike two. No balls, two strikes. Runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. Now batting. Adrien Del Castillo stands in for the diamonds. And there’s a foul ball. The Astros leading by a run here in the bottom of the sixth. And the swinging miss. Ooh, Baya. You got to remember to take the donut off the bat, partner. missed inside with the curb [Applause] up and in. It’s two and two. Two two count and a foul ball. He stays alive. had a good eye there. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. These aren’t fun at bats if you’re a hitter. And I’m so glad I’m retired. Next to hit for Arizona, Bla1 Alexander. First pitch misses. Counts one and0. And a foul ball. [Music] Just missed. [Music] Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Two balls, two strikes. And that is downstairs. Counts full. Three and two. Alec Thomas in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two down to in the air left field. Altuve should have this one. drops into the glove and that’s the inning. Top of inning number seven at the plate is the Astros catcher Yer Diaz right side. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still able to fire over and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Next to hit Taylor Trl. DFani measures 6’2 in 195 lbs and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2011. All one, no strike. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at in a one count. Just not able to square it up. The next offering misses and a count. Two and one. [Music] That’s a little bit low. inside and that’s ball four. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Short stop, Mauricio. One down. And next to hit for Houston, Mauricio Dubon. And there’s the strike. man at first, one away. Slow ground ball to the right side. Fires to second for one. Return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. Three up, three down for him there. Midway in inning number seven. And it’s time to stretch. It’s the Astros two and the Diamondbacks one. Now pitching for a new arm into the game, the righty Brian Abrau. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year, and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Well, one-run game. Alec Thomas stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Alec Thomas Now a drag bun third base side off line. He’s safe and a nice job there to keep it from getting away. Catcher Jose Herrera. Jose Herrera stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Laidoff man is on. You got to be looking for the bunt here. Trying to get him into scoring position. puts a bunt down in plenty of time to first out on the sack bunt. Really nice technique right there to get that sack bunt down. Advances that runner up another base. That was his job. He got it done. Now it’s the right fielder Corbin Carroll. Third baseman played on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bunt [Applause] in there for a strike at the top of the zone and ball one with the tying run at second here in the bottom of the seventh [Applause] and a count one and two. [Applause] Got him looking and he didn’t like the call. Well, even if you don’t feel great about it, you got to swing the bat with two strikes in this situation. You’ve got the tying run out there in scoring position. Just put the ball in play. Maybe something good will happen. It just didn’t look like he understood the situation. And the batter will be the shortstop. Peraldo Peromo. 0 for three in this one. First pitch just misses. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] So the tying run at second and that’s fouled all [Applause] and that one fouled off. Two outs and one in scoring position [Applause] and a ball evens the count. That one miss. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. [Applause] Man on second, two down. So now two on and two outs. Didn’t miss by much right there. Just couldn’t get the call off the inside corner. Now that left fielder. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, but not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. 10. Well, he’s already in some trouble and falling behind in the count makes it even worse. Then you’ve got to throw the ball over more of the plate and that’s where they can really do damage against a guy like this. That one misses. That’s five straight. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. That misses the zone. They’re now three and 0. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. And that’ll note the bases. Oh, you know this guy wants to swing it, but he’s showing some good patience in this one. It’s the second time he’s taken ball four. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bull pen. Brian Abrau done for the day and he leaves with the bases loaded. So he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him. Now pitching for Brian King gets the ball now. He has a great slider with tons of movement. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. So bases all loaded up and now the first baseman Josh Naylor 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. You know this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher and what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate. Try to hit the ball over the shorts stop’s head [Applause] and he takes the strike. Well they say it’s the best pitch in baseball. Strike one. You get ahead on a good hitter as well. Gives you a little bit more confidence to move through the at bat. [Applause] Tap foul at the plate. [Music] That misses the zone and a count one and two. Pretty standard high 02 fastball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. You don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Big spot. Two out. Both the tying and go ahead runs are aboard. [Applause] Got him. Inning over. That’s a crucial missed opportunity. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. [Applause] Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. John Curtis. John Curtis. And stepping in for the Astros, Bryce Matthews. Matthews. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. I’m really impressed with this offense. They haven’t been timid at the plate at all. They’ve been aggressive and they’re keeping the defense on its toes. Five hits for him on the first pitch alone. So, they’re swinging and connecting right out of the gates. Toss to Naylor. One up, one down. Now batting third baseman, Isach Paredus. Now the third baseman, Isak Paredus, 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. Let’s do it back. And first offering is fouled off. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. And it’s fouled away. And of course, sometimes you need to be patient as an offense and let the pitcher come to you, but you can’t argue with the game plan they’re using in this one. One down, base is empty. Goes down looking. So, the bullpen doing a nice job backing up the effort from their starter. Yeah, we’ve seen some pretty excellent pitching out of this staff so far. I mean, they’ve come in ready to do their job and get outs. They’ve been pretty tough to get to in this one. Two outs, space is empty. So, next up for Houston, Cam Smith. Right through there for a strike. [Music] Let’s get it going. The 01 and that one fouled off. [Music] And they’ll do it again. [Music] And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. So they go quietly there. Last half of the eighth coming up. It’s the Astros two and the Diamondbacks won. Back here in the desert ready for the bottom of the eighth. Here’s the third base Suarez. Audio Suarez. Ripped to short. Throws to first in time. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. Adrien Del Castillo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. [Applause] Just missed. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. getting a little frustrated with the strike zone. Ball to strike. Fast ball is outside. [Music] [Applause] Just missed. Blaze Alexander in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. looking to get the tying run on base. And the tying run is on base. Second walk of the game for him. And he’s been really patient at the play, the game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. [Applause] Alexander in the box now. take strike one. And that’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. Del Castillo leads off first with one away. And the next pitch is way outside. That’s a ball. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Applause] He goes down looking. Oh man, just locked him up with that slider. Caught a lot of the zone. I think that tells you all to know about what he was looking for in the box and it clearly was not that pitch. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Brian King done for the afternoon and as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Now pitching for now. Right-handed arm out of the bullpen. Hector Nerys. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect the tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Alec Thomas. And that one misses up and in. Ball one right now. They’re looking for something. Hit hard into the gaps. Give them an opportunity with two outs to score that run from first. [Music] Hammer on the line. Base hit. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Always feels amazing getting a job done when a team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. A chance now to even the score and maybe extend this game. Looks like we’ve got a substitution at first. Entering is the pinch runner. Jake McCarthy. So the tying run in scoring position. Now Jose Herrera will hit next. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. 01’s the count. [Applause] Two on, two outs. two. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. [Applause] Outside corner. Got him looking. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. Back here at Chase Field, we go to the ninth. Now the left fieldielder, Jose Alu. Jose Altuve. Curtis back to work. Up and in. And that’s ball one. Activity in the Arizona bullpen. Kevin Ginkle, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Woodford also getting ready. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike [Applause] and there’s a ball. That two seam fast ball is usually coupled with a slider away. And when a hitter’s conscious of the pitch in, it’s hard for him to cover middle away. And that’s where a pitcher can really finish off that batter. [Applause] Swing and a hard hit liner up the middle and a base hit. And a good start to the inning right there. He does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. Bet at first, Christian Walker up next for the Astros. [Applause] Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. [Applause] That’s down and in. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. Swings threw that one out in front that time. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle him with two strikes. Got him swinging. Nice. Doubled up with the slider for that punch out. Number four just caught the zone. So as a hitter, you have to protect right there. Great pitch to just expand a little bit more. He got that chase he was looking for. That right there is good pitching. Now here’s the Astros designated hitter, Victor Keratini. [Applause] Fast for a strike. 0 and one crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth [Music] [Applause] the other way and that’s a base hit. They get it in quickly. So first and second now one out. Up next for the Astros catcher Yiner Diaz. And now the catcher comes up to him. Yiner Diaz delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Pitch is in for a strike and it’s 0 and two. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. The O2 in the dirt and gets to the back stop. Both runners move up. Two in scoring position now. And that takes away the double play. With two on and one out, you’re just hoping you can get a double play ball to get yourself out of the inning. But now you’ve really got some work to do. Need a big strike out here. Second and third. One away. [Applause] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring. Two on, one out. And that’s off the inside edge. Two balls, two strikes. [Applause] Popped up. Alexander. He’s got it. There’s two away. [Applause] Up next for the Astros, center fielder Taylor Trl. And next to hit for Houston, Taylor Trl. And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here. That’s in there. That’s strike one. [Music] [Applause] That one’s upstairs. Ball one. That’s off the inside corner. Two and one. It’s a big opportunity right here, but I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. That pitch clips the outside corner and now two and two. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Two outs, two in scoring position here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] And that one missing low. Mauricio Dubon waiting to hit for Houston right through there. Got it. That ends the inning as they squander a chance to pick up some insurance. No runs on two hits, no errors, and two men left stranded. To the bottom of the ninth we go. Top of the order. Do up. It’s the Astros 2 and the Diamondbacks one. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Josh her. I can’t imagine any save is an easy one. You’re holding a small lead on the scoreboard and you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats they can. So it’s always high stress. Let’s see what he’s got here to try and close it out. Carol the next to hit takes low for a ball. [Applause] Kicks a swing. Now it’ll appeal to third. No swing. Just held it back there. One-run game. Bottom nine. Tried to check his swing. Appeal to third and he went around. Just enough that time. Next offering is in for a strike. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. That one down the line and it’s just fouled. That was close. Ground ball left side. Paradus whips it to first on the run. Nicely done for the Owl. Though a wellthrown slider like that one can be tough to get in the air. Good downward break on that one. There’s two outs away. Stepping in, Peralaldo Peromo, known for his late inning heroics. [Applause] The shorts stop takes the ball. A oneun lead and the home team trying to pull it out. [Applause] And another ball. Two balls. No strike. That one finds the zone and it’s two and one. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] way outside and that’s ball three. Lordis Goreel Jr. in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here [Applause] on the ground to third and that’s just foul. [Applause] in the air left field down the line into the corner but foul. He wanted that fast ball high and tight looking for a strikeout. Just didn’t locate it very well. [Applause] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Applause] Paul for he walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up trying to walk. Very gritty here in the bottom of the ninth. One out. Guriel now at the plate. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. [Applause] If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in scoring position. There’s the strike. try to keep the game alive here in the bottom of the ninth [Applause] and a count one and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. Foul ball still a one and two count. That one almost got him. Two strike [Applause] count. on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here, B. Ball four. He walked in and that keeps things going. They’re not ready to go home quite yet. Now that base with the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, Josh Naylor stands in now for the Diamondbacks. 0 for four. A couple of fly outs. He’s also grounded out and struck out. Swinging a drive deep right field. That’s back. Ball game. That’s worth the price of admission. And the Diamondbacks walk it off. [Applause] Hitting a walk-off homer is the kind of thing you dream about growing up. You’re in the backyard. You’re creating the most pressure-p packed scenario. And what do you do? You come through with the big swing. Well, he was living a childhood moment right there. Nice swing at the bat. Nice win for the team. And your final 42 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon. Heat. Heat.
