The Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp Day 1 Already Look INSANE… | Steelers News |

I want to give shout out to my boy Steelers W Robbie. Go follow this man on Twitter or X. He’s he was at today’s practice. He he’ll be at a couple of other ones posting a bunch of clips. Without him, this video was just not possible to make. So, go give him a follow if you haven’t already done so, as well as some of the other Pittsburgh Steeler reporters out there, um, if you haven’t already done so. With that being said, let’s dive into the video and talk a little bit about today’s practice. So, the first pract or first throw of 11 on 111s comes right here. Aaron Rogers in the back field. We see Joey Porter. Okay, first thing we notice is we got some priest stat motion by the offense, right? And you see Jaylen Ramsey in motion with him. This is a telltale sign. It is man coverage at least what they’re showing us, right? So, it looks like man coverage here. Ramsey in motion. And now look at he checks it. He understands. All right, we got man coverage. Maybe single eye safety. Look, two linebackers over the middle. Let’s see. So, as we drop back, we’re looking. We’re looking and we’re trying to find DK Mechav early. But let’s see here. Patrick Queen. Okay, let me let me move the screen over. Patrick Queen. Let’s see what he does. Drops back to a to a Okay, so he’s dropping into a flat. He’s dropping into a flat, which tells us what this is actually zone. This is actually zone cover. We got We got a cover, too. We got a Tampa 2. Look. And with Jaylen Ramsey moving over, he drops back. He drops back and he gets into the flats over here. Look at this. They completely disguise this as man coverage. It ends up being cover two and Patrick Queen ends up getting an interception. This is beautiful. This is why you disguise your defense because even me looking at this like, yep, he’s he’s rotating over. In my head for a second though, I was like, why is he manned up with that? Calvin Austin. Why is he manned up with Calvin Austin? Right. Um, but nope. This is zone coverage. They disguise it perfectly, man. Oh man. And because we have outside leverage over here, Aaron Rogers sees this as, “Okay, this is easy, easy, easy. We’re going to get this out quick, and no one’s going to be there because we got man coverage with inside leverage with our wide receiver.” He’s throwing this all day long, but they bait it. I mean, what a play. We’re going to talk about everything in this video. Let’s deep dive right into it. Another one from Robbie. Uh, same same dude, man. Again, go follow him if you haven’t already done so. This dude is electric when it comes to the amount of content he posts on the Steelers. Every single practice he’s able to go to W man. Right. So, first of all, we see a little bit more motion here by the offense. It looks like they want a a staple of this offense to be with priest that motion so it can help determine what the defense is in, but we know just like last play, it’s not always a telltale sign of what the defense is in. So, right here, they end up do handing this ball off to I believe Jaylen Warren, but man, look at the defense. They are hounders. The one thing I loved about Jaylen Ramsey over his last couple of years is the way he plays in run defense. I feel like he’s just high motor, non-stop type of guy. Look at how well this defense rotates over to this run. Uh and man, they just play it super super well. Look at Jaylen Ramsey, man. He just he’s sitting in the in the in the cutback lane. That way if he is able to get back somehow, you’re not going anywhere. And they take him down. You’re not supposed to be tackling in this portion of practice. It is day one. No pads. Uh but still this defense is everywhere. Nick Herbig, you got JJ Watt back over here. I mean, yeah, this defense is going to be uh pretty freakish this season. I think that is a telltale sign right there. I mean, yeah, I know it’s just practice, but we know Steelers always have a great defense. Another play here. Looks like we’re going to get another hand off to Jaylen Warren getting the majority of those first team reps. Again, we’re not tackling as a defense. We’re just putting our hands close and uh we don’t want to tackle. We don’t want to bring down the ground. Uh but Jaylen Warren very shifty in in and out of his cuts. Looks like just a straight handoff here. Walking seems okay. Maybe Alex Highmith gets him there. Maybe Pat Queen gets him there. But again, Jaylen Warren is a guy that’s going to get a lot of reps this year. I know people want to see Caleb Johnson get the majority of the first team reps and a lot of snaps this year, which he will get. He will get a lot of carries, don’t you worry. But Jaylen Warren is the best pass blocking uh running back maybe even in football. So I think that alone is going to keep him on the football field a ton uh this season. Not not a bad rep there. All right, here we go again. Defense looking good so far. Looks like we’re going to move Jaylen War in. Keep in mind this is basically his first practice with the Steelers. I know he came and and attended mandatory mini camp, but they only did really walk through type type of things. So, okay. Looks like corner blitz. Jaylen Ramsey is a very good corner blitzer. Okay, they Oh, okay. So, we get a bad snap. Looks like to me they didn’t mean to snap it. He He tries to check and the center snaps it anyway. Little bit of miscommunication here on this play and they send him anyway. So, he didn’t even get to protect himself. Usually, when he sees, you know, a guy like Jaylen Ramsey sneaking up to the line of scrimmage here, you got to check, right? You got to say, “Hey, tight end, instead of going on your route, we we got to chip chip and release.” All right, we’re going to swing Jaylen Warren back over to this side. Because he saw no pressure coming off there, and there’s Jack Sawyer, right? He didn’t get to, you know, switch Jaylen Warren off to this side. He didn’t get to say, “Hey, we we got to get you to uh block and release.” No, he didn’t get to switch anything. So, he throws it prematurely. It looks like lofted up um into the sideline. just threw the ball away because he had no ability to protect himself in the pocket. So again, great job by the defense showing late pressure, switching up the way the defense looks right before they’re about to snap it. That can really mess with the defense, man, or an offense. So, um, and it messes with them there. So, great job by the D once again. Now, obviously, it is super early, guys. Don’t take any of this without a grain of salt because it’s super early. Whenever we talk about training camp and any any practice, right? When you first start off, the defense just naturally should win, especially when you have a brand new quarterback in there. You have a brand new go-to wide receiver that they’ve never played with each other. Um, you have some new running backs that you haven’t played with in terms of Aaron Rogers. I mean, a brand new offensive line. This is brand new, brand new system for a lot of guys. Um, so it is tough. So, take everything with a grain of salt. And I already know a bunch of you guys are going to start panicking. Now, we’re transitioning into seven on sevens portion of practice. I don’t want you guys to panic. Again, I’m telling you right now, usually for most teams that I cover, the defense tends to win the majority of early practices. Just happens. Um, but it’s a telltale sign that your defense could be elite. And we know they’re going to be elite. Um, I like how we’re seeing Jack Sawyer in here a little bit, man, with the first team defense. Honestly, could be a really good sign here. So, again, they’re not actually rushing the quarterback. Okay, they’re just showing that they’re there. So, it looks like to me, top of the screen here, let me try to move this screen back for you guys. Looks like to me you got outside leverage by the DB, which means inside leverage for the wide receiver, which means if we’re running an in, that should be there. Great route there by DK. Wide open. Ooh, tries to snag it. Okay, so the problem here, again, I’m not a football player, but it looks like DK doesn’t fully sprint out of the route. Again, it’s just practice. You don’t probably not going to sprint out of these routes. Okay, so again, this is more when it comes back to Aaron Rogers and DK Mechaf. They never played with each other before that. You know, building chemistry is a massive part of this sport, right? And they just don’t have it right now. DK almost comes away with an insane catch. Doesn’t though. It’s okay. Don’t panic. Don’t panic. Things will be fine. Things will be totally fine. This is a great route by DK. And ultimately, this should be an easy easy completion and grab down the field. Can’t hang on. That’s okay. They’re they’re going to get it going again. just pre just training camp. That’s all it is.
