MLB LIVE🔴 Detroit Tigers vs Pittsburgh Pirates – Jul 23, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

And welcome in everybody. Glad you’re with us. Inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Detroit Tigers going up against the Pittsburgh Pirates. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about ready to go. And on the hill here today, Bailey Falter and Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, no doubt about it. He’s gonna have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss barrels about Glabber Torres, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And that’s fouled off. That one is absolutely belted. And in one hops the wall around first and hustling for second. And it’s a double to start the game. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. When you connect and it jumps off your back like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. Here’s Jamai Jones. Slider for a strike. hit on the ground to the right side and that’s just foul. Let’s go Bailey in the dirt and it’s one and two. Runner at second. Nobody out and that one missing inside. A sharp slider. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Man at second. There’s a swing and a drive. That one carrying and that is gone. A two-run homer. Third home run of the season. It’s two nothing. He kept swinging and it paid off. Well, that was a battle, Boo. And he just kept taking his cuts. Finally squared one up. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that. And probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. Riley Green in now. Takes ball one off the plate. And another ball that missed. That’s a ball. And there’s the automatic. That one lifted to left. Fam makes the grab. One down. And now the Tigers line up for manager AJ Hinch. And one of the most exciting young stars in the sport, Spencer Torqulson. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. And that one hammered Reynolds ranging back and it hits the fence and he starts his afternoon off right with a double. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. I don’t know how he was able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. One out, runner at second. Matt Verling up now for the Tigers. That one finds the zone. Strike one. 0 and one. And now the lefty. That’s the ball. They’ve got him working a little harder in this first frame than he anticipated. Two. This one in the dirt. Still only one out here in the inning. Next offering upstairs. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter count. Fouls one away. And now three and two and ball four to a board. Take your base. Well, he took his chance at getting him to chase right there. But with first base open, a walk not a bad thing. He set up a double play opportunity if he can induce a ground ball. Digging in is the switch in outfielder Wel Perez. And that’s in for a strike. Throw and one. 0 and one. on the ground to second. Might be two. Off balance feed. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Well, they had the chance of turning two right there, but I don’t think he got a good grip on the ball as he tried to transfer from glove to throwing hand. They say you can’t assume a double play. I beg to differ at the big league level, but it’s going to be ruled as a fieldielder’s choice. Dylan Dingler will hit next. First pitch and he just misses. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center onto the warning track and he holds it in. Detroit adds two on this homer and it’s two zip. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. And we’re back. And on the mound now, Reese Olsen. Well, this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound. hitters batting under 200 against him and they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything, doing any type of damage. The only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surrenders a rare home run. But outside of that, it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today. At the plate for Pittsburgh, Tommy Fan, that’s a strike. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. That one outside. And that’s ball one. That one missed. Two balls, one strike. Breaking ball misses down and away. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. On the ground right side and that chance handled. Tosses to first. One up, one down. We take a check of the Pirates lineup put together by manager Derek Shelton and Sing. I’m a bit surprised to see this many righties in the lineup against a right-hander. Yeah, you’re not the only one, Boo. I’m a bit surprised as well. And you know, some hitters work well against same-handed pitching. You know, just back in 2024, Bobby Whit Jr., Vlad Guerrero Jr., and Aaron Judge all had higher batting averages against righties than they did against lefties. So, maybe they got a plan after all. Andrew McCutchen stands in now and watches strike one. Way out front for strike two. Two really good backto-back sliders now in an 02 count. He’s feeling real confident about finishing this hitter off. He can go anywhere he wants. Highfly ball, shallow right field. Jones sizing this one up. puts it away for the out. That’s a really nice play, Ranging back into the outfield for that catch. We all know those could be a little tricky, especially if the wind swirling around out there. Two down, base is empty. Brian Reynolds here, ripped to third. Torres fires over to first. Three up, three down. Inning over. Nothing doing here for Pittsburgh. They trail things here. Two nothing back here at PNC Park. Second inning swept to go and the batter will be the shortstop. Zack McKinstry Falter back to work and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Grounds one to short. Connor Falefa on the run. Throw to first and they get the out. That night, Jav Bayz digs in right side. Bayz 32 years old and he was born in Puerto Rico. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. Next offering is in for a strike. I understand you want to try to gauge that guy’s fast, but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone. Now you’re in a tough spot. Set down on strikes. That was pretty nasty, man. Just back door him with the breaking ball right there. And I’ll tell you what, as a hitter, it looks like it’s a mile away, so you give up on it and then it just hooks around that outside corner. Tell you what, if a pitcher can make a pitch like that, you pretty much just have to tip your cap as you walk back to the dugout. Here comes Glaver Torres. Doubled his first time. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Two out. Base is empty. hammers that one deep left field and forget it. He sends a rocket to left. Home run number 10 on the year and they add on. It’s 3 nothing. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. That home run certainly worthy of another look with Stackcast, huh, Singy? I mean, that ball screamed out of here. Absolutely. I mean, we only see a handful of home runs with an exit vloss 120 off the bat, but that’s extremely rare. Jones the next to hit, takes outside. And there’s a ball falter. Maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, pitchers, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. in the air. Foul off first. Horowitz pulls it down and that is that. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s now 3 nothing. Major League Baseball is on the show. We head to the bottom of the second at the plate for Pittsburgh. Nick Gonzalez. Gonzalez. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. A three-0 lead is great, but you can’t get too comfortable. Got to stay aggressive. Keep attacking hitters. Try to cruise through this ball game. And it’s fouled away. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That misses the zone. It’s a ball in two strikes. Really nice slider right there. Sweeping across the dish, but just couldn’t hang the edge. Into center and a base hit. man aboard on the leadoff single. Let’s go. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. This center fielder O’Neal Cruz. There’s a strike. This is one of those situations defensively where you can’t try to do too much. You got to make sure that you feel the ball cleanly and get one out first. It’s going to be tough to get two with this kind of speed in the batters box. They had a foul ball. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Rudder at first with no outs here. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Got him looking. One away. batting. This is Joey Barter. Joey Bart and first offering is fouled off. Let’s go, Joey. swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Dingler makes the grab. Two down. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. So, up next, Spencer Horowitz. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Now, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. Gonzalez off of first with Jul. And that should be extra bases coming home. He’ll score easily. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of this struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. So, runner at second, two down. Now the third baseman Kean Hayes. That one catches the zone and it’s 0 and one. Fast ball is outside. check swing and he went and that’s strike two. One, two. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Two outs and one in scoring position. Now one out to right. Makes the grab and that will end the inning. But the Pirates strike on this runscoring double. It’s now a 3-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Pittsburgh. Top half of the third inning. And now Riley Green. And that one fouled off. Well, these Tigers doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up. It’s tough to remember the times they’ve actually swung and missed at a pitch because it really hasn’t happened. They’ve made contact on nearly 100% of their swings. swings through that and it’s a strike out and one away in the top of the third. Now batting Spencer Torlson up now for the Tigers. Doubled his first time up. One ball, no strikes. The one Wow, just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. One out. Base is empty. The next offering misses. Three and one. Just doesn’t seem to want to throw him a fast ball. And that one is lifted in the air. Reynolds gets under it. Puts it away for the out. Two away now. Up next for the Tigers. The designated Matt Verling up now for the Tigers. He reached out a walk his first time. Pirates. Inside corner and that’s called a strike. probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. The two just misses the mark outside the zone. Really good take especially with two strikes. broken bat and it’s popped up. Brings it in and that’ll do it. Down in order go the Tigers, but they still lead it 3-1. As we go to the last of the third, here is Isaiah Ker Falefa. Kinder Fale. And that clips the inside corner. And this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. That misses the zone and that’s ball one. That’s in ball. Fast ball for a strike. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. That one misses. So a lead off walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. So the Pirates batting order turns over. Tommy Fan getting ready to hit. He’s over for one. Swinging a foul back. And that’s out of play. Connor Falefa aboard here at first with nobody out. Outside low and now it’s even one and one. One ball, one strike. And that’s a fair ball. Lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Just a solid swing right there. Caught it out front and lifted into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit 0 for one with a fly out. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. First and second here. No outs. and fouled off. Swing and a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. Now a long throw home. It’s off the mark and he scores and they trail by one. comes through with the RBI. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. First and second, no outs. Up next for the Pirates, Brian Reynolds check swing and he went. That’s strike one. 01 gets under and pops it up. McKinstre hauls it in for the out. Now batting second baseman Nick Gonzalez. Next it’s the Pirates cleanup hitter Nick Gonzalez. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. I know we’re still early in the stages of this game, but this at bat has the potential of being a difference maker. You’ve got to stay calm in the box. That one finds the zone. Strike one. 0 and one. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away and the count one and two. Runners at first and second with one gone here in the last half of the third. Foul ball still a one and two count. Two on, one out. That just misses. And that’s ball two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Ground ball could be two. Good feed. That’s one. And that’s two. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a 32 ball game. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Wel Perez. Come on, Pirates. Right through there for a strike. No balls, one strike. And that is out of play. Foul ball still 0 and two. That’s a ball. Pretty standard high O2 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, they’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. You don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. the one-two swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Vince calls it in and there’s one away. Now that’s a tough play for the infielder ranging back into the outfielders. Part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at, outfielder? Call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. And here’s the catcher, Dylan Dingler. Fly to center his first time. And that’s through there for a strike 0 and one. Boo. One really cool moment I remember at PNC Park is the 2006 home run derby during Allstar weekend. David Ortiz and Ryan Howard each hit homers into the Alagany River on the fly. Really awesome to watch. One down base is empty. Gets a piece and stays alive. swing and a miss. Strikes him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Pirates McKinstry batting for the second time and that’s strike one. Ball one there. line to left, dives and it gets by. Now he’ll turn for second. Around second now as they still don’t have it. Now around third, waving him home. The relay throw and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. Wow. And inside the Parker is really exciting. He almost made it, but instead a relay to the plate and the tag just beat him. Man, that’s a lot of effort for an out at the plate. Wild play to end the inning. And we’re back. Bottom of the fourth at the plate for Pittsburgh. O’Neal Cruz pulled hard, but it’s a foul ball. You know, these Pirates showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set them up to do more damage later in this game. That’s the third. Torres handles leadoff hitter retired in the fourth. Good slider inside right there. Batter fighting to get there. Just rolled over it. Got the ground ball. Joey Bart. Here’s Joey Bart now. He popped out his first time. up the middle. McKinstry whips it to first on the run. It’s there and that’s a great play. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. And now the first baseman, Spencer Horowitz, doubled in his first AB. There’s a strike. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps with over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. And that’s down and away. That one not close. And it’s two and one. and a slider in there for a strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see in this at bat to hit. Throw on to Torqulson and the Pirates go one, two, three. So, they go quietly there. Onto the top of the fifth we go. It’s the Tigers three and the Pirates two. We go to the top of the fifth. Elmo coming to the dish. Falter back to work. And there’s a foul ball. All right, Pirates. That one hit to right. Reynolds racing over to make the catch. Well, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Torres goes 6’1, 28 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. Swanging a ball drilled center field. They got it for out number two. Now batting second base Jamai Jones. Jamai Jones up now for the Tigers. He’s already homered in this game. And that’s in for a strike. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Next offering is in for a strike. Oh, and two. What a stop. Throw to first. Nicely done for the owl. Tigers fail to make any noise and it remains a 3-2 ball game. Back here at PNC Park ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now batting Key Brian Hayes. and he boots it. Still manages a throw and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Now batting the short stop, Isaiah Isaiah Connor Falefa up to the plate. The walk and a run scored his first time. And that’s off the inside edge. One and0. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Perez tracks it down for the out. Up next for the Pirates, left fielder Tommy. Here’s Tommy Fan. One for two. You can do it. Yeah, swinging a foul out of play. Home team down a run. Last half of inning number five. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. He’s gotten into a really good rhythm. Set down seven in a row. He just wants to get the baseball and deliver it as quickly as possible. Keep the momentum going. Yeah, that’s downstairs and outside. And now it’s even out. swing at a ball popped up. Jones makes the grab and that’s the inning. Bucks go down quietly and it’s still a 32 ball game. Righty reliever out of the pen. Carman Majinski. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. He tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. Here’s Riley Green for two in this one. Riley Green. First pitch misses. Boo. He never moved because he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away on the ground and it goes just fouled. And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. Bullpen action for the Pirates. Andrew Haney, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. And here’s the first baseman, Spencer Torqulson. runn and that’s a base hit. Lead runner to second. So, two on and nobody out. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it crazy. First and second, no outs. Matt Verling the next to hit. Fast for a strike. 01. First and second, no outs. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. Just missed. outside low and it’s two and one. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Now three and one. Wel Perez waiting to hit for Detroit. Green at second. Torqulson out at first with nobody out. Line drive. Base hit into the outfield. They won’t test it here. Base is loaded. No outs. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Nice line drive to the pole side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Now the base is loaded. Big opportunity for them to break this game open. Wel Perez up now for the Tigers. Golden opportunity right here. Fought off foul. You need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup something. But you got to make some pitches. But if he can battle and get through this, he can earn some points. Andy knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Base is juiced. No outs. And look out. That one gets him. The second man he’s plunked in this one. Dylan Dingler up now for the Tigers. Dylan Dingler. Dingler having a lot more success on the road this season. Oh, he’s so good about trying to drive the ball to the opposite field gap in these situations. If he takes that approach, he could bust this game wide open. And that one fouled off. Next pitch is downstairs. Way to lay off that pitch down. Next offering is down low. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. In the air right field and it stays fair. One runs in. The second run scores. Runner around third on his way to the plate. Head first slide and he’s safe. It’s 7 to2. How about that? Clears the bases. Fast ball off the plate a little bit, but a really nice job of going with it. Punched it to the opposite field for that knock. manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Carmen Majinski gives way and he’s responsible for the runner on second so the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now pitching Andrew Heene gets handed the rock out of the pen and with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers in their numbers. But I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Zack McKinstry and a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Well, these Tigers digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. Everything seems to be clicking and the six extra base hits in the game kind of tells you everything you need to know. They’re not getting fooled up there at all. Man at second pulls that one foul. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Wow, he got away with a mistake right there. Swing and a miss for the strike out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Now batting. So here’s Bayz now Sigy. He’s got a history of coming through in the big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. Runner at second here, one gone. Clips the outside corner and it’s one and one. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. Swing and a miss. There’s that change up. If you’re a guy that can only hit to one field, then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust. But because he’s able to use the entire field, that’s why he’s so successful in these situations. Spoils that one. and it remains two and two. When you played, did you play with guys that you thought were clutch and sort of what were the attributes you said that’s what he possesses that allows him to come through? Well, we always used to joke, you know, guys want to eat steak and there were some that just had a knack could understand that. All right, this is a a big, you know, payout if I can come through with a knock here. But I think when you really look at the numbers and you really audit everything, guys kind of are who they are. And a strike to Glaver in the on deck circle. You really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast ball. Last thing you want to do is miss a good hitable fast ball early in the count. That’s off the mark and a count even one and one. That one pushed foul. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Here comes Dingler around third. He’ll score and his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton and everything seems to get started around this guy. So, a man at first now. Jamai Jones. He’s already homerred here in this one. Yeah, that’s in for a strike. Go and one. Foul ball. Torres leads off first with two down to the inning. Going to count one and two. His understanding of the strike zone very impressive. That was a very close O2 fast ball. I just don’t know how you take that. Ground ball to the right side and a foul ball. squirts away a little bit. Two and two. Missed with a change up. Ball three. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. Another homer, his second home run of the game. It’s 10 to2. The count was full, but he was ready to swing it. knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Riley Green up now for the Tigers. And there’s the strike. That misses. And one and one. Swinging a foul straight back. Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Now batting the first baseman, Spencer Torlson. Spencer Torqulson up now for the Tigers. Right through there for a strike. That one missed. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Got it. Steph is his third of the game, but they score seven times to blow this thing open. 234 two up in the home half of the six. Tigers 10 and the Pirates two. Bottom of the inning. Now the number two hitter Andrew McCo every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs. Swing and a miss. And he was fooled. The baseball is coming out of his hand very well. He’s been able to paint all four corners, but really good ride at the top of the zone. Hitters have to Oh, now this one’s high and deep. Way back there on its way gone. His ninth homer of the year. It’s 103. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself. at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. So digging in Ryan Reynolds cut on and miss. Good change up right there and it’s 0 and one. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the bottom of the six. Next pitch is outside. Action in the pen down there. Carlos Hernandez getting loose for AJ Hinch. Lee warming up as well. Ball to strike and a foul ball. Swang and a miss. Struck him out and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the home run. Now here is Nick Gonzalez. Gonzalez up the middle. Slings to first in time. Now batting center fielder O’Neal Cruz. Two outs. Base is empty. So, next to the plate for Pittsburgh, O’Neal Cruz. And that’s downstairs. Ball one. That’s a ball. Two balls. No strikes. Basketball for a strike. Inside. Just missed. Fast ball for a strike. And the count’s full. Count. and he walked him for taking. It’s been a little bit of a shaky inning, but he’s still in a good spot to get out of this thing without giving up any more runs. He’s just got to turn the page and go after this next guy. And first offering is fouled off. Cruz off of first with two away. One- one. That’s down in a slider missed. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. I think he was sitting off speed there. Pitch misses there. Full countdown. So now two on and two outs. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. Here’s AJ Hinch heading towards the mound. And we’re going to see a pitching change right here. Reese Olsen out of the game. And not a great performance, but he leaves with a big lead. New arm when we get back. Now pitching for new arm out of the bullpen Mont. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Not the easiest thing when you’re talking about a guy that’s, you know, perhaps is going to be in the rotation, you know, maybe a long relief guy. to not start an inning, to come into an inning with pressure on it and and try to get yourself comfortable. Pooritz up for the third time here. Watches that one miss. Next pitch is outside. Two and0. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Two on, two outs. And they’ll do it again. tried to check his swing there. Appeal to third. No swing. He held up. Clyde Washington with the call there. Battling here as he fouls it away. Swanging a ball driven out to center. That one’s got a chance and makes the grab and that is the third out of the inning. But a solo home run will at least get this closer to respectability. It’s now 103. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s the DH Matt Verling and he hits a ground ball right side. Let’s go. Gets it to first and the lead off hitter set down to open the seventh. So up next, Wel Perez right through there for a strike. No balls, one strike. Foul ball there. Base is empty. One away here in the top half of inning number seven. Next offering misses. Now one and two. Chopped left side. Hayes. Now the throw to first on the run and very nicely done for the out. Up next for the Tigers, catcher Dylan Dingler. Two down, base is empty. Dylan Dingler up now for the Tigers. Known for his rocket arm behind the plate. And that’s in for a strike. Pirates. He swings and fouls one off. Belt. Two outs and a chance to put up a zero on the scoreboard here. And that’s not something that’s come easy for this staff in this one. Swing and a highf fly ball. That’s out to center. Makes the catch in and over. Bottom of the seventh. Here’s the third base. Kebrian Hayes. Third base. Kebrian Hayes. That’s in there. And that is strike one. comes up empty. That’s strike two. 0 and two. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. 02 fast way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. Fights that one away. Still one and two. and Earl Hendris punches him out. That’s a strike out. Up next for the Pirates, Isaiah Ker Falefa. Isaiah Conora. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Just that missed. That’s the ball. One ball, one strike. swing and a miss. Now he’s in a one-two hole. Clearly sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. The change up missing. Three and two now. You got a full count lined and that’s a base hit. So the one out hit turns the lineup over. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. The 01. The throw to second is offline. Now batting. Well, fortunately they’ve got a big lead on the score, so that error shouldn’t hurt too much. But you have to be careful about losing concentration in a game like this. Can be an easy trap to fall into. Two on with one out. And now it’s Andrew McCutchen. misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Runners at first and second with one gone. One more time. Yeah, that’s fouled off. That’s too low. And that’s ball two. In the air out towards left center. Hauls it in. Two away. Now batting right fielder Ryan. So first and second with two outs. Ryan Reynolds. The next Pirate to hit 0 for three in this one. Come on, you can do it. Let’s go. Lifted in the air right field and a base hit. Connor Falefa around third. He will score and it’s an RBI single. It’s 104. So two down. Next, it’s the Pirates cleanup hitter Nick Gonzalez. One for three. And that’s outside. And it’s one and0. Highfly ball. And that one curling foul down the right side. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Fan over at second. Reynolds at first. Two out of the inning. Good job to fight that one off. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. swings through it and that’s a strike out. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. We look ahead to inning number eight. Tigers 10 and the Buckos four back here in Pittsburgh. Now it’s the short stop. Zack McKinstry. Haney back to work. Slashes this one and it could be trouble around first. Heading for two in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Oh, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up gets into scoring position. Now there are several ways that they can get this run across. So man aboard and now the center fielder Javier Bayz 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Let’s go. Come on. And another ball two and0. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Man at second. Just missing there. And now it’s three and two. Full count. swinging a ground ball. Gloves it on the dive and that’s a great play for the out. Great reaction there to get to the baseball, secure it, and then no time to get up and throw. Throws from one knee. That’s a guy that’s got a lot of confidence in his arm strength and accuracy. Here is Glabber Torres. And it may be a long shot, but a triple here will give him the cycle. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. There’s this swing going to miss. Benny really sells the change up with that arm action and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Yeah, with two strikes here, you really want to miss outside the zone with that breaking ball. Go for it. Going two now. The other way. That’s a base hit. Run. Scores. The throw into second and he’s got a double. His fourth hit. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Andrew Heeney will depart. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. Now, Pirates with a new arm on the mound. Johan Ramirez 49. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. Here’s the second baseman, Jamai Jones, looking for his third home run of the game. Yeah, he blasted his second of the game in the sixth inning. Guy looks like he’s playing on beginner mode in this one. Beginner mode is where it’s at, Chris. That one misses. That’s ball one. Next offering is fouled back. One out and a runner at second. And there’s a swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that. He’s got to get a better pitch to hit and now two and two. Swinging a miss. That one in the dirt gets to it onto first and it beats him for out number two. That’s a strike out. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. So digging in, Riley Green. Ball one there. Two knows the count in the dirt. Blocked runner at second. Two down and we’re in the top of the eighth. Fouled off left side. Man on second. Two down. Count is full. Goes down looking. A run on two hits and they leave one. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Tigers 11 and the Buckos four. And we’re back. Here’s the center fielder, O’Neal Cruz. Center fielder, O’Neal Cruz. Down the middle for a strike. It’s 0 and one. He must have been looking for something else cuz he gave up on that pitch a little early. It was right down Main Street. Oh, now this is blasted way back there. On its way. Gone. A massive home run. It’s 115. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball, squared it up, and the backspin carried it out of here. Joey Bart, the next pirate to hit. There’s the strike. Popped up. Jones makes the grab. One away. Now batting first baseman Spencer Horwitz. Spencer Horowitz now at the plate. Not even close there. And that is ball one. on the ground right side and foul ball. Ball to strike the pitch and that one is inside. One out. Base is empty and a run in here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Blind into right and there’s two away. Now batting at the plate for Pittsburgh. Kebrian Hayes 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. This one in the air. Jones pulls it down and he makes the catch and that’s the inning. Cannonball coming through eight full. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show back here at PNC Park. And now the first baseman, Spencer Torqulson. Just missed. Activity in Pittsburgh’s bullpen. Caleb Ferguson up and throwing. Bednar the right-hander also getting loose and it’s fouled away and one and two. Oh, that’s that slurp right there. threw it extremely well. Talk about just a ton of breaks. So tough to get that barrel to f another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. Now that up now for the Tigers. And that’s downstairs and outside. this to center field. Makes the grab after a long run. That’s out number two. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. And first offering is fouled off. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. Fights it off. He’ll see another two down on swing and a miss. Struck him out. He’s knocked four strikeouts now. Nothing doing here this half and 912 scheduled to lead off the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Tigers 11 and the Pirates five. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom nine, the batter will be the short stop Isaiah Ker Fa popped up to the left into foul ground. Torres makes the grab and there’s one down. Pittsburgh doesn’t often get enough praise as a baseball town, but you think of all the greats who have been pirates like Hannis Wagner, Willie Starel, Roberto Clemente, it’s pretty amazing. Tommy Fam will hit next. And talking about that Pittsburgh history, Boo, don’t forget the great Negro Leaguers of the Pittsburgh Crawfords and Homestead Grays. Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, Oscar Charleston, Buck Leonard, the list just goes on and on. 01 now. Oh, bases empty, one away here. The last half of inning number nine. And a popup right side foul territory. Torqulson makes the catch. And there’s two down. Ball’s just not carrying to first tonight. Now, you would actually say that to your teammate in the dugout. No, I’m not that cruel, but someone would say it to me, and I’m sure it’s probably been said before. McCutchen in the box here lets that one go for a ball. And a big swing and a miss. One and one. The one-1 is fouled off. Two down, nobody on. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. That missed by a lot. Now two and two. Got him. And that’s the ball game. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. 115 your final score for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
