MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs Miami Marlins – Jul 23, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
from inside Lone Depot Park in Miami, Florida. MLB the show with a good one coming at you. It’s the San Diego Padres’s taking on the Miami Marlins. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. just about set now. The starting pitcher in this one, Tyler Phillips. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t hitters or they can move their ball and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. That misses and that’s ball one. This is a guy that grew up in big league clubouses and it’s something that you see throughout the game. Sons whose fathers also play the majors. fights that one away. Still one and two. Strike three. Went back to the sweeper and got the strike out. Luis Orise stands in. Luis Or inside one and0. Yeah. And beyond that, all the other men in those clubouses that sort of take you under their wing as a son or a nephew and show you some of the tricks of the trade. It’s just invaluable that type of experience. Fair ball. Now he’ll turn for second. Throws off target as he slides in with a double. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. so impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that, but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. Here’s Manny Machado. Another solid power season. And a curve drops in for a strike. While Ruth hit these high towering fly balls out of the park, Garrick just crushes line drives into the stands. I mean, he hit absolute bullets. [Music] Come on, Tyler. There’s a strike. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. [Applause] Misses the zone for a ball. That was the sweeper. Strike him out. [Applause] Knocks that one away and will do it again. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit, just not able to square it up. Man at second. Swanging a ball lifted in the air. Sanchez makes the grab and there’s two down. As we take a look at the Padres’s lineup, they’re dealing with a sicker specialist on the mound, which can be a big time challenge when he’s right and working mostly from the knees down. Well, I think the approach you take is really try to lay off of those pitches down in the zone until he gets some called strikes and then forces you to go after that pitch. Until then, make him elevated because guys that throw those sinkers, those two seamers, really hard for them to be effective up in the zone. Those are pitches you can hammer and when you get a cookie, you don’t want to miss it. Gavin Sheets in the box now. No balls in a strike. Swings and sends a rocket to right. Sanchez makes the catch and that is that. Padres’s leave one. Now the Marlins will see what they can do. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Miami, today’s starting pitcher, you Darvish. And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Xavier Edwards leading things off and takes a strike. [Applause] Darvish delivers. And there’s a foul ball. [Applause] fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Get out of here. Up and in. And that is ball one. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. the other way. A Glacius sends it to first. Going up, one down. And time now for the Marlins lineup. And one to watch, of course, their three-hole hitter, Otto Lopez. Yeah, definitely someone I always enjoy, you know, when I get a chance to watch him, whether he’s hitting in a game or even taking swings during batting practice. Man, this guy is always so focused on what he’s doing on that task at hand. He’s got so much attention to detail that when he steps in the box, his success rate is really high. And first offering is fouled off. The pitch ground ball to the right side. He takes it on his own. Two up, two down. Batting third, the shorts stop, Otto Lopez. Now it’s the shorts stop, Otto Lopez singing when the year’s over, he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. And a base hit into right center field. And that keeps the inning going. Batting fourth, the designated hitter, Augustine. So next, Augustine Ramirez, [Applause] here comes the pitch. There goes the runner from first. That’s in for a strike. Throw save. I think that steel kind of sets the tone, not just for this game, but for the entire series. First inning, game one. So that kind of tells me they’re going to be aggressive on offense and try to force the issue whenever they can. Lopez at second with two down. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Maldonado makes the grab and that’ll do it. One left for Miami. Scoreless after one. Back here in Lone Depot Park and now the shorts stop Xander Bogarts. Bogart Phillips back to work and that’s through there for a strike. Go and one strike. The shorts stop takes a ball. One ball. One strike. [Applause] Let’s go, Ty. And there’s a ball. Not close with that one. And the count is filled up. This one in the air center field. Meyers hauls it in and there’s one away. Batting six, the center fielder number three. Here’s the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. Not getting the results he’s wanted at the plate recently under the Mendoza line so far this month. And that’s in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. [Music] Oh, one. Second inning here. No score. [Music] Misses the zone and he gets him to chase. I would throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just Oh, that got him. He had him one, two, and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. So, a man aboard, Josea Glaciius, the next up for the Padres’s. And that one fouled off. Man at first, one away. That one fouled off. One ball in the dirt. [Music] Check on the runner. Take runner. Runner takes off on the ground to the left and foul ball. [Music] Oh, two. Squirts away a little bit. Two. Two. That one almost got him and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Eighth pitch of the bat coming up. Strike him out and ball four to a board. Batting the second baseman, Jake. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. [Applause] Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. [Music] [Applause] [Music] And that’s fouled off. [Applause] And look out. That one gets him. The second man he’s plunked in this one. batting. No, bases all loaded up. Martine Maldonado up to hit. Golden opportunity right here. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Base is loaded. One away here in the top of the second. And a big swing and a miss. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] And that one is downstairs. And the count’s even at two. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Applause] And a foul ball. He stays alive. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Strike him out. Certainly a strikeout situation right there. The infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get a swing and miss. Really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate. Pretty big two out at bat coming up now. And the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. Yeah, don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score two. And that’s in the dirt. Laboring here about to throw his 30th pitch of the inning. [Applause] And that misses. That’s ball two. Pressure is on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. Next offering upstairs, in situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. Tatis waits and that one fouled off. Merrill on third. A Glacius on second. Croninworth at first. Two out of the inning. Next offer is in for a strike. Left field [Applause] makes the grab and that’s the third out. Pods leave him loaded. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. [Applause] And we’re back. And now Kyle St. Chris has been a good year for him having already set a new career high for RBI’s in the season. [Music] And the first pitch misses for ball one. Line drive and this might be trouble around first. Heading for two. The throw in and he’s into scoring position with a leadoff double. Maybe a chance for our first run here. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Runner in scoring position now. And a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. [Applause] Runner in scoring position. No outs. And here’s the first baseman, Eric Wagaban. [Applause] That one not close. And it’s one and0. [Applause] There’s the strike of the knees. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. And a foul ball. lifted in the air right center field. He dives but he can’t make the catch as the go-ahead runner pulls up at third. Tyler Wade coming into the game now as the injury replacement. Now playing center field number 14. Now it’s going to be Liam Hicks. Wade on the ground. Croninworth tosses to first and that is a big first out. Well, you’re definitely looking to do more with that opportunity at the plate. Two runners in scoring position, but at least he puts the ball in play. They bring across one run out there to pick up. And now for the Marlins, Dane Meyers. He’s going to finish with a new careerhigh in stolen bases. Chris [Applause] first pitch and he just misses. One ball, no strike. [Applause] And another ball, little bit low. And that’s ball three. One away with a runner at third. Bottom half of inning number two. [Applause] At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. And that drops in for a strike. That front door slider is such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing plane. [Applause] And ball four to a board. Batting nut, the third baseman Gra. Two on, one out. And at the plate for Miami, Graham Paulie first offering and it just misses. One and0. Runners are at the corners. One away. [Music] Tap foul at the plate. [Applause] [Music] The 1-1 and a swinging a miss there. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch. It’s going to produce a strikeout or a ground ball double play. Breaking ball and that got him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Xavier Edwards gets a chance to hit here. Round out his first time out. Xavier Edwards [Applause] rips one to right. He’s got it. Runner tagging from third. Applies the tag and they get two. Double play. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Always exciting to see a play at the plate trying to score with two outs, but the tag just gets him in time and they cut down the run to end the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now the number two hitter, Luis Oras. Orgas that one a little bit high and that’s ball one. Arise bats left, throws right, batting second in today’s lineup and he was born in Venezuela. Next offering is in for a strike. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Swing and a base hit. Solo runner aboard to start the inning. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with a welltimed swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Here comes Manny Machado. Pitches in there and one. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit. And hardly order coming up right behind him. This is where they need to get going. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. [Applause] This ball’s chopped on the ground and that’s foul. [Applause] And the O2 on the ground two ball off balance feed. There’s one and that’s all they’ll get. Good armside run and sink on that pitch right there. Got inside on it and got him to bounce into that out. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat 0 for one so far. Miami. That one back up the middle and it gets through and they put up the stop sign at second. The batter number two, shortstop. First and second, one out. Xander Bogarts the next up for the Padres’s. 0 for one with a fly out to center. That one is absolutely belted. Going back and that one’s gone. He circles the bases. It’s 3-1. One pitch, one swing, one home run. Yeah, you can say that’s efficiency right there. Didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact. took on the big part of the yard for that home run and just barely got it over the wall. I thought for a second he brought it back out there too. He gave it a great effort, but you know those plays are so tough to pull off and I’m sure he’d love to have another shot at it. Now the Marlins manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Tyler Phillips departs. Not what they were hoping for from the opener. So we’ll see a new arm on the mound when we get back. now pitching forward. So, the Marlins go with a new arm. Valente Beoo, left-handed batter at the plate, and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. Now batting Tyler Wade taking his first at bat of the game after entering on defense. There’s a strike. [Applause] [Applause] Fouled off left side. Well, they gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone. And I’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again. Fast ball is outside. This hitter’s been seeing good velocity in the at bat. It’s kind of set up for that change up. He hasn’t seen it yet. Looks just like a fast ball out of the hand. Got him looking. Went back to the fast and it was effective. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. The Glaciius stands in now and watches strike one. [Applause] That one missed. Two out. Space is empty. [Music] Fast ball for a strike. ground ball left side to first and that is the inning. So a three-run shot for the Padres’s here and this is now a three1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show back here in Miami except for the bottom of the third. And now for the Marlins, Jesus Sanchez. Sanchez. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shut down inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Right through there for a strike. One and two. Next offering misses and the count is two and two. Two and two. and downstairs. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked that one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Lopez the next up for the Marlins. One for one with a single so far. Fouled off down the right side. Let’s go Miami. The shorts stop takes the ball. And that is out of play. Sanchez on at first. Nobody out. Miami. to the right side and a base hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Well, it certainly feels good when you can win the at bat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Just a simple ground ball the other way. They’ve had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel. Put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole. at the plate. Augustine Ramirez in the dirt. Blocked, but no advance from the runners. Tying run is at first here in the last half of the third. And that’s off the inside edge down 2 and 0. Ground ball could be two. Croninworth throws on to first. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. That was a productive at bat. You know you’re doing something right. Anytime you help move two runners into scoring position and give your team a chance to drive in a few runs, even if it’s still kind of early in the game, And that one is lifted in the air. Brings it in. Runner tags for home. He’ll score on the sack fly. It’s 32. Well, that’s a quality at bat right there. You know the situation. You need something in the air and deep enough. And that’s exactly what he did. Good pass to the base. The first base in Eric Wagaban doubled in his first AB. [Applause] Just missed. One out. Two outs and one in scoring position. [Applause] Swing and a popup. drops into the glove and that is the inning. A run, a hit, and a man left. Three innings complete. It’s the Padres’s three and the Marlins two. All set for the start of the inning. Stepping in for San Diego, Jake Croninworth. Croninworth. Croninworth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way. [Music] Ripped on a line. No trouble here. Puts it away for the eye. One away. Now that the catcher Martine and now the catcher comes up to hit. Martin Maldonado went down on strikes his first time through. [Applause] Try to get him to chase on the change up that time. Hit on the ground to short. Handles throws to first and a couple of quick outs. Now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. So the batting order turns over. Fernando Tatis Jr. the next up for the Padres’s. Bowl for two in this one. Pitch misses there. Ball one. Next offering is fouled back. swings through that one. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. [Music] A little bit high maybe and it’s a full count. [Music] Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Nothing doing there for the Friars and it remains a 3-2 ball game. Back here in Lone Depot Park, John Chavei and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Liam Hicks. [Music] That one’s in there. That’s strike one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. In for a strike, 0 and2 pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. That one the other way. Zips it across and one gone in the fourth as they get the lead off. The center fielder Dave Meyers. So digging in, Dane Meyers walked his first time in there at the knees. Strike one. [Applause] One out. Base is empty. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Sheets calls it in. Two away. Now batting third baseman grab and up next for Miami. Graham Paulie. Close one. doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. Two [Applause] and0. And another ball. The Padres’s up by a run. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Next offering is in for a strike. [Music] Right through there for a strike. Okay. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Two outs and that’s ball four. Tried another slider, but it missed the plate. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. Edwards. Back to the top of the lineup. Now it’s the Marlins leadoff hitter. Xavier Edwards in there and it’s 0 and one. Paulie off of first with two away. Darvis checks on the runner. Paulie dives back in safely. And a swing to miss. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. [Applause] on the ground to third and that’s a fair ball. Lead runner to second with two gone back against the wall with two strikes but found a way just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline. That’s really excellent back control and it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the te where it’s placed in different spots. That was just nice. First and second, two outs. Jesus Sanchez the next up for the Marlins. And that one fouled off. [Applause] SW B to That’s bad. And it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. One runs in, the second run scores. It’s 43. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump off. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. So, runner at second, two down. And now it’s going to be Otto Lopez. Swinging a foul straight back. [Applause] Movement in the bullpen. Nick Paveta getting ready to go. Matsui getting loose as well. Rudder at second. Two down [Applause] and power ball. All slider so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. goes down lowkey, but they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. It’s now a 43 ball game. And we’re back. New inning getting started. So digging in now for San Diego. Luis Arise Beoo back to work. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Activity in the bullpen. Calantrol up and loosening in the pen. Junk getting cranked up as well. [Music] Just missed. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So that’s a good take by him. Next offering is in for a strike and he swings through that one. Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. You usually are going to see that inside fast a little longer coming in from the opposite side, but that pitch really got in on him right there. I mean, that’s a wellthrown pitch. Tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and the sweet spot of the bat to the baseball. Here’s Machado. That one ripped and a couple of quick outs. The left number, Gavin Sheets. Here’s the left fielder, Gavin Sheets. One for two. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. The Padres’s down by a run and we’re in the top of the fifth. Swing and a miss. Nice change up. One [Music] check swing appeal down to third. And yes, he offered at it. Headed down the line and that’s a foul ball. The one, two, fly ball down the line. This has got a chance and it is fouled. That was a nice bid right there to try to tie up this ball game. just couldn’t keep it from bending. Foul. He looked locked in on that swing. Pitcher better be careful with him right now. And that’ll do it. Padres’s down and score holds at 4-3. And welcome back to the ballpark. We head to the bottom of the fifth. And now here’s the Marlins DH Augustine Ramirez. Just off the inside edge. You know, these Marlins doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. One thing that really stands out to me is how they’ve only struck out one time. That’s good discipline right there. And on top of it, they’re producing more than a hit per inning. All those numbers mean this offense is really making the defense work by just putting the ball into play. Anything can happen at that point. That one finds the corner. It’s two and two. swings and misses. Slider got him for strike three. Oh, that slider wasn’t even close to the strike zone and he got him to chase. That’s just a bad approach right there. Either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn’t resist the temptation. But man, really expanded right there and didn’t have a chance of making contact with that pitch. line to left and foul ball. Next offering is in for a strike. Base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. Going to count one and two. gets a piece and stays alive. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Tatis under it. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s two away. The first baseman number 33, Eric. The batter now, Eric Wagaman. First pitch not close. Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Wade pulls it down and that is that. Here’s a new pitcher from the pen. Jansen Junk. Should be a good first matchup for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. leading off for Xander Bogard looking to do more of what he did back in the third. No doubt that three-run homer is a huge reason why they’re in a good spot right now in this ball game. An important swing of the bat. Here’s a rock into right field. And there’s a run away up next to the Padres. And now the center fielder Tyler Wade outfield playing pretty shallow. Swinging a ground ball. Dives and he can’t hang on. No throw and the defense comes away with nothing. Well, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Now at the plate, Jose Glacius. And a first pitch fast. He’s in for a strike. [Applause] into center and that’ll get down for a hit. They get it in quickly. So, first and second now, one out. Well, I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Next for the Padres’s, Jake Croninworth late with the swing there and one [Applause] [Music] fought off foul. Tying run and scoring position and we’re in the top half of the six. and he couldn’t hold back. He’s run up on strikes. Now, Martin, the next up for the Padres. Gets the call. Strike one. that to right. Sanchez ranging after it, makes the grab and that’s the third out. A couple of hits in the inning, but they can’t get them home. 789 two up in the home half of the inning. It’s the Marlins four and the Padres’s three now pitching. Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Nick Pavetta. He’s been so good against lefties. Here’s the catcher, Liam Hicks. The catcher Hicks in his rookie season, 25 years old. He’s actually a former rule five draft pick and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. Strike two. No ball. Two strikes. Went with the sweeper, but it misses. Strike three. Got him with the sweeper. Clearly looking out over the plate on that outer third. And that pitch finished right down the middle. Just a little bit in and he couldn’t pull the trigger. And at the plate for Miami, Dane Meyers and that’s in for a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Alec Jacob up and throwing. One down. Base is empty. And that one fouled off. Next pitch is outside. Myers started after it, tried to hold up. Now a look to first and he held back according to Dave Lawrence. And now two and two. [Applause] Battling here as he fouls it away. Pitch is in the dirt and the count’s full. Three and two. The pitch is outside and ball four. Second walk of the game for him. and he’s been really patient at the play. A game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. Popped up Croninworth and he makes the catch and there are two outs. The batter number nine, second baseman Xavier Edwards. So the lineup flips over now. Here is Xavier Edwards. One for three. Foul ball. Next pitch is downstairs. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike, 02 count. Instead, it’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. And there’s the ball. Two and one. That one’s in there. And that’s strike two. Two two. Ruer takes off. Hit in the air out to center field. Wave. sizing this one up and makes the grab. And that is that. No runs on no hits, no errors, and one man left. Seventh inning coming up, it’s the Marlins four and the Padres’s three. Back here in Miami, we go to the top of the seventh. Now it’s the right fielder, Fernando Tatiz Jr. [Applause] It’s good speed at the top of the order here. You want to get it on. See if you can get a stolen base. Maybe get around the bases and pick up a run. This to third and it goes just foul. Looking to get the tying run on base. And a good eye there. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. line drive and this might be trouble into second base. The tying run is on with a leadoff double. Always feels amazing getting the job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. Now we’ll see if they can pick up that tying run and start us over here in the late innings. Luis Az the next up for the Padres’s. [Applause] Fast for a strike. So, the tying run at second. Popped up. Lopez pulls it down and he makes the catch. And there’s one away. Here’s Manny Machado now for three in this one. Machado. First offering misses badly for ball one. [Applause] Right through there for a strike [Applause] just off the inside edge. grounds one to short. Zips it to Hurst. Machado is out. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Next to hit, Gavin Sheets. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. And that misses ball. Action in the pen down there. Tanner O’Neal, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Gibson, the lefty, warming up as well with the tying run at second here in the top half of inning number seven. Here’s the pitch. Runner breaks for third. There’s the ball out third and that ends the inning. When you get thrown out at third with two outs, you kind of want to keep on running. Not a great decision there as it ends the inning. Back here in Lo Depot Park, bottom of the inning. And now the right fielder, Jesus Sanchez. first catch and he just misses. And that’s through there for a strike. One ball, one strike. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. And the leadoff man aboard. The batter number six, shortstop. So up next, Otto Lopez. Lopez. One ball in the dirt. Ground ball right side. It squirts through. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Back to back base hits. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Now here’s the cleanup hitter for Miami. Augustine Ramirez. And a foul ball. Sanchez over at second. Lopez at first with no outs. Late that time, but it’s strike two. Just threw that fast ball by him. Elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That’s too low. And the count one and two. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. [Applause] He’ll circle the bases. Home run number 15 on the year. It’s 73. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Nick Paveta won’t go any further and as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. back with a new pitcher after this break. Out of the bullpen for the Padres’s, Yuki Matsui. Walks have certainly been an issue for him this season, so we’ll see what kind of command he has. away. There we go. Kyle Sters the next up for the Marlins. [Applause] Swanging a miss. And that strike one strike [Applause] swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. Here we go. The first baseman number 33. And now the first baseman, Eric Wagaban. Wagaban. [Applause] There’s the strike. Oh, and one. Here comes the 01. Swings through that one for strike two. 0 and two. Foul ball. Still 0 and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and one away. First strike out for him in this one. And that splitter is maybe the go-to pitch when he’s looking for a swing and miss like that. He throws it quite a bit and that’s a good example of the effect it can have on a hitter. Pick batting with one down takes the strike. [Applause] Swing and a ground ball base hit right field. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Now, batting the center fielder, Dane Meyers, the next up for the Marlins. He’s 0 for one. First pitch misses. [Applause] Two on, one out. And there’s the strike. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Shoots. Sizes this one up. Pulls it in and there’s two away. Now batting third baseman Graham Paulie. And now for the Marlins. Graham Paulie. Little bit low. Traffic on the bases with three already across here. The bottom of the seventh. Just missed. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runds. Two and0 to count. Here it comes. Fast for a strike. Next offering is in for a strike. bows it back with two strikes. Two on, two outs. Three and two. Xavier Edwards waits on deck for Miami. [Music] [Applause] 3-2 and that’ll load the bases. The batter number two outs is full. Here’s the second base, Xavier Edwards. First pitch just misses. Well, he’s already in some trouble and falling behind in the count makes it even worse. Then you’ve got to throw the ball over more of the plate and that’s where they can really do damage against a guy like this. On the ground to third, Delacius fires over to first. That ends the inning and they limit the damage, but the Marlins get three on the homer. It’s now 73. You’re dialed into the show. And we’re back. We’re at the top of the eighth. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s. Gavin Sheets. The Padres’s in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid-off man. Need a good at bat out of him right here. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Miamiy’s bullpen with some action. Calantrol, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Bender warming up as well. And that’s outside and one and one. The one-1 is fouled off. [Music] That’s inside. [Music] Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. That one misses and the count’s full. Three balls, two strikes. [Music] Now a fly ball to right center. It falls in and that’s a base hit. Had a good start to the inning. The batter number two shortstop Xander. Here’s Bogard. Now he’s already homered in this game. That one at the knees for a strike. If you’re going to get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much. [Music] Check swing called strength. Hit on the ground to the right side. Sneaks through base head and out to a board. The center fielder number 14, Tyler. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Jansen Junk done for the afternoon and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching for Gibson comes on now. Hasn’t pitched in the last three days. Hey, Gibson. Stepping in for San Diego, Tyler Wade. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Miami. That’s the third. Boots, gets off a throw. He beats the throw and they don’t get the out. Now back the third base Jose [Music] base is loaded. Nobody out. Jose Glacius gets a chance to hit now. [Applause] Pitch misses and it’s one and0. You need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup something. But you got to make some pitches. But if he can battle and get through this, he can earn some points. And now two and nothing. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Late on that fast ball. As a hitter, you got to learn something from that pitch. clearly wasn’t timed up on the fast ball. In a two- count, you have to be ready to do damage. That one in for a strike. Two and two. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. The tying run at the plate. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. One runs in. Now the second run is in. It’s 75 now. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Jake Croninworth getting ready to hit. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. [Applause] Swing and a ground ball out to short. Off balance feet. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. It’s such a great feeling when a team can rely on their shortstop to make a play like that. It builds up confidence for everyone on his team. It might even inspire a few more web gyms before the game is over. [Applause] Maldonado in the box now. Takes strike one. Well, in this situation with runners on, you got to get ahead in the count that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. And fouled off with the go-ahead run at the plate. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. [Applause] Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. That one just misses. Really good take, especially with two strikes. And it’s even up. [Music] [Applause] Careful. This one in the dirt. Runners hold tight, but it’s a full count now. Swing at a high-fly ball. Well struck. Sanchez on the move. racing back and that gets down to the corner. In comes the run from third. Well, back within one as he brings home the run. Put a very nice swing on that pitch right there. Got one to drive and just kept it fair down that right field line and into the corner. And it’s almost impossible to track those down as an outfielder. Really important at bat coming up now. So, two in scoring position with one out. Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here. And that drops in for a strike. One out. The possible tying and go-ahead runs on base. [Applause] That’s smacked down a line to center. Brings it in. Here comes the runner from third. A big run scores on the sack fly. Tie game here in the eighth. That wasn’t your standard sack fly. He barreled that baseball. Just couldn’t get it to drop in. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Kane Gibson done for the day. And it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. [Applause] Now pitching forward. Lake Backer will take over here. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. So digging in now for San Diego, Luis Arazz [Applause] and lines a base hit into left field. Throw quickly to the infield and the go-ahead run has to hold up at third with two away. Oh, that’s a smart decision to hold up with one out and the heart of the order coming up. Don’t want to run into an out at home plate. Manny Machado to the dish for a pivotal at bat. [Applause] First pitch swinging. No, one strike. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. That’s off the inside corner. And now it’s even one and one out towards right center field. It’s going to fall for a hit. Runner from third. Comes across and it’s an RBI single. They lead it in the eighth. Well, that that had a lot of pressure riding on it. So, really great job coming through right there. It’s got to feel good. You know what they say. He couldn’t have thrown it out there any better than that. And certainly the case that time. Just flared it back behind the second baseman and dropped it in there. Now Gavin Sheets. [Applause] Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Music] Two outs. Swinging a ball hit out towards left center field. It falls in and that’s a knock. Run comes in from second. Relay throw. Safe. And that’s his third hit. Got the job done to put him up by two. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Here’s Xander Bogarts. He’s already homerred here in this one. [Applause] That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Base knock here really gives them an opportunity to take control of this ball game. You don’t want that other team to think they have a shot. And a knock here would be a big blow. [Applause] Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. One run is in. Here’s the throw to the plate. Not in time. He scores. And they lead by four. And his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton. And everything seems to get started around this guy. Now the Marlins manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Lake Backer gives way. And as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Now pitching for Calantrol gets the ball now and he’s been hit pretty hard at times this year. So he’s looking for better right now. Giving up more than a hit for any. Two outs, runner at first. Here’s the center fielder, Tyler Wade. just missed. Boo. The runner at first, needs to be careful right here. He’s dealing with a pickoff artist on the mound. [Applause] Laser could be trouble. Around second is Bogarts coming home. The relay to the plate. He’ll score and the lead is up to five. Picks himself up an RBI. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. So, runner at second, two down. Next for the Padres’s, Jose Glacius missed with a change up. And that is ball one. [Applause] Man on second. Two down. And another ball. Two balls. No strike. just missed. Wait at second with two down. So now two on and two outs. Just came apart right there. Four pitch walk guy at the plane was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone. First and second, two outs. Stepping in for San Diego, Jake Croninworth. One ball in the dirt, but kept close. [Applause] And now it’s even up, man. was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up and that one hammered. That’s back there onto the track and he makes the catch, but not before they bat around as nine men wind up coming around to score. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Padres’s 12 and the Marlins seven. Now pitching for back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Alec Jacob. And he’s had a struggle so far this year. As you can see, the inflated ERA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. So digging in Jesus Sanchez the right fielder Sanchez. That’s outside. Ball one. One and0. Chopper right side. And that’s just foul. So a foul ball makes it one and two. This guy’s seen two change ups in a row. Could be a little vulnerable for a fast ball right here. And that’s in the dirt. Now two and two. [Music] on the ground to short throw in the dirt and he can’t come up with it. [Music] man at first. And up next for Miami, Otto Lopez and first offering is fouled off. [Music] swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Brian Hoing getting loose out there. [Music] That misses the zone. Now one and two. Ground ball right side could be two to second. There’s one throw to first but he beat it. Now batting the designated hitter Augustine Ramirez. Here’s the cleanup hitter for Miami. Augustine Ramirez. [Applause] Let’s go one more time, baby. And that’s in there for strike one. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. He makes the grab. Two down. Now batting the left fielder, Kyle Ster. Kyle Sters the next up for the Marlins. Smash down the left field line and foul ball. that misses the zone and it’s one and one. The Padres’s leading by five here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Just outside and it’s two and two. [Applause] Come on, Miami. Fly ball to right. Tatis and that is that one error in the inning, but nothing more through eight full. It’s the Padres’s 12 and the Marlins seven. All set to start the ninth in this one. So digging in now for San Diego, Martine Maldonado. Quantrol back to work. And that’s skip Quantrol a 63 righty, 195 lbs and he was born in Canada. Ground ball right side and foul ball. [Applause] Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] And down on strikes and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. Tatis Jr. [Applause] That one catches the zone. Strike one. [Applause] Foul ball there. [Applause] And that’s downstairs now. One and two. Grab ball up the middle. Two up, two down. The first base, number four, Luis. Two down. Base is empty. And here’s the first baseman, Luis Arazz. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. That misses one and0. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. There’s a strike. When you look at the elite teams in a game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you fires over to first and that is that nothing doing for the offense that time. 678 scheduled to start the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Padres’s 12 and the Marlins seven. on the mound now, Ryan Hoey. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rates very high and it just breaks a ton. And now the first baseman, Eric Wagaman, one for four with a double. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter in there at the knees for a strike. [Applause] Yeah. And I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. [Applause] cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Liam Hicks the next up for the Marlins. [Applause] That’s in there. Go and one. Base is empty, one away. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. [Applause] Way inside and that hit Dane Meyers the next up for the Marlins Meyer. [Applause] That one pushed foul. and takes low for ball one. [Applause] Just missed. That one fouled off. Two and two. Hicks the base runner at first with one out. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit and that forces the runner to hold on at second. Two on with one away. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. Timing on the swing was good. able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t split it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Let’s keep it going. Paulie the next to hit takes ball one. [Applause] Called strike right there. [Music] That’s down and in. [Applause] [Applause] swings over the top of that one. That split is a pretty nasty pitch. Explodes out of the hand. Looks like a fast ball and the bottom just falls out of it. In the air out towards left center and it falls. Coming home, he will score. It’s an RBI single. It’s 128. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Brian Hoen will depart. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. Now pitching for Here comes the closer here in the ninth, Robert. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year, and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Xavier Edwards, the next up for the Marlins. In the air, left field down the line. Sheets snags it on the run. Those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Jesus Sanchez the next up for the Marlins. [Applause] That finds the mark on the inside corner. They’re down to their final strike. Bringing the cheese on that one. Suarez is just one strike away. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Yeah, pretty tight ball game up until the eighth inning. And that’s really the time where you expect things to lock down. But the offense broke out. incredible outburst and just put this game out of reach. A 128 final score in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shambi. We’ll see you soon. What the roof?
