Guerschon Yabusele On POSTERIZING LeBron, Why He Joined The Knicks, & His 2nd Chance In The NBA
Y’all y’all would win it cuz y’all got y’all got voodoo. All that Madrid magic. All that dark magic y’all got. Y’all like the Pacers. That’s what that’s that’s what it is. Real Madrid is y’all not slick no more. Cat out the bag with Indiana. Not by going too crazy in the stadium. Got the city. Let’s get it. Let’s get it. [Music] What’s up everybody and welcome back to another episode of the roommate show where the vibes are always immaculate of playmaker original presented by bet 365. We got Matty Ice with us. We got JB. We got one of the newest New York Knicks Guchon uh Yasabili. So what’s up baby? He does that without personal. Wow. I was looking at his name. I said, “All right, how am I going to pronounce this one?” It’s all good. You’re going to learn. You’re going to It’s easy. It’s real easy. I swear. Uh, you in French right now? Yeah. No, I’m in Madrid. This is where I have my my house here with the family. Oh, okay. Mad one of the best city in Europe so far. That’s what’s up, man. Well, first of all, welcome. No, we appreciate it. I think we’re all very excited. Um, I want I kind of want to talk about your journey, man, because I mean, I think after your Olympic performance, you kind of resurre yourself back into the NBA. So, um, let’s just talk about that. Like, what was it like getting ready for the Olympics and then last year being back in the NBA? I mean, the the whole journey of that whole season was pretty much amazing. Um, starting with Real Madrid, um, we did every finals of, uh, every competition. So, we won like three out of four. So, going to the French national team, I was pretty confident, you know, I was I was really feeling like, oh, we doing something this season. And, uh, you know, it was the Olympics, so for sure, I was hyped already. Uh, it was home, family, everybody was waiting for that. So it was it was just um amazing to be able to translate from like Real Madrid to go to national team uh to be able to go to finals in Olympic homes and then uh to be able to to go back to the league this whole season. I think I will never forget uh that year. It was it was really special for me and my family. But being able to go back to the league there for 5 years, I think that was the best thing that ever happened to me. People talk a lot about how hard it is to get to the NBA, but they don’t talk enough about how hard it is to stay in the NBA, especially once you make it and then you find yourself out of the league. I can imagine at times you’re like, damn, am I ever going to am I ever going to make it back, but like you said, you made it back after 5 years. So, like, how do you not to obviously knock your Euro League ball, which is amazing, but I’m sure the goal, right, is always to find yourself back in the NBA. So, how do you how do you stay positive? How do you stay ready? Like, how do you because it could happen at any time. I mean, it it was really hard to be honest. Uh it was long five like it was five long year you know like every year every summer uh my agent was calling me was like oh you might have a chance to team callins you know uh try to see what’s your situation with the contract so I was pretty hyped going to every summer you know I was like oh maybe I will have a chance but uh it was really hard to find out that you know no teams are making a move so now you’re like okay I have to go back ground again and uh you know prove that I’m able to come back to the league. So it was really hard but like you said so hard to stay in the NBA. I remember when I was in Boston um they was telling me the average I think players in the league is like two or three years and you know I spent two years and then I was gone. So uh once once this happened and then there’s no more NBA that’s when you realize that wow it’s over. So you know it’s hard to keep the balance and the motivation to tell yourself that you will be back. That’s one thing obviously we like Matt I think with Matt you talked about how hard it is to get to the league how hard it is to stay in the league but I feel like once you once you’re in the league and you go over you go overseas it’s not impossible but it’s even harder to get back like there’s like there’s a few players that really that go overseas and then you know are able to come back and I mean you had a great year last year so hey credit to you bro because I know that that had to mess with your mind a little bit. Um and and I I want to talk about the process of coming back, right? So when you’re coming back, what’s the because I know there was a whole thing with like contract, you know, NBA buyout, you know, and those kind of things and like there were some stories and rumors and all that, but like talk about that process and like how difficult cuz it’s not just like, oh, NBA team wants to sign me, I’m out. Yeah. So, I kind of like knew we was um getting into that because uh my contract, you know, I was under contract with Real Madrid. So, even with everything that happened in the Olympics and I knew I had a chance to come back, I knew that I will have to take a risk because I still have to pay the buyout, right? So, we we talked a little bit, my agent, with my wife, you know, my friends, uh some of my closest people to try to make sure we make the good decision. Um, but then you know after that I was talking to my wife and I was like the NBA is a second chance. Like you know it’s maybe five or six people that had a chance for to come back in the league. So for me it was impossible to say no cuz it’s it’s here today but there’s no such thing like it’s it might not be there next year. You know everybody was like oh you should have stayed one more year. No once the NBA wants you. You got to go cuz it’s going to be another player. Like I’ve waited 5 years. Oh yeah. Like it’s going to be another player. is going to be another thing like you know it was for me it was like yeah you had a perfect year this is the time you got to go back you got to take the risk and you know I wanted to see what’s up you know I feel like I was in the league before and I didn’t get the chance to really play to really show and I was able to so I was like you know I feel like I’m more prepared now so let’s let’s try to go over there take a risk but you know be motivated and give give everything on the court what would you say the biggest difference between your ball and NBA It’s it’s it’s a lot of things that’s really come into that because um the whole time I was in Euro League, it’s always the debate which better the league uh Euro League or this and that. So I think the NBA is the best for sure. Like there’s no question about it. It’s just how it is. You know, Euro League gets better every year, which is good, right? Competition like you’re going to see some new players coming in here and go crazy. Uh so you will see that. But the NBA is much faster, you know? is more like one possession sometimes, you know, uh fast break, you know, it’s really like a game that’s really fast and really athletic, right? When you come to Europe, it’s more like, you know, taking the ball, you know, set a play up, play defense, and then go offense. You know, you you take your time. It’s like a different type of basketball, right? And um you feel like the coach and the team really try to out coach them, you know, like they really try to set plays to try to mess, you know, mess mess them up a little bit. I feel like the league if if it’s a player that can’t guard anybody for like five minutes, we’re going to attack this guy. Just go at him. We we don’t say no play, no nothing. No. Get the ball and attack him until he’s out and then we’ll figure it out, you know? So So I feel like the game that we we play in Europe is just a little bit different. Um I I always like compared to the game in the Olympics. Um when we was playing Team USA when we was playing our game slow, we was we was there. And when we was trying to match their energy when they was going fast break, you know, they better than us at that. They’ve been doing this since they was kids. So, you know, it was hard for us to impose our game. But I really think it’s it’s two different games. The Olympics, like you mentioned it, like it’s, you know, obviously that’s a a crazy achievement. First of all, you know, playing in the national team, you know, for your national team, but obviously playing for your national team. You guys are hosting the Olympics. you guys are playing, you know, USA for like just talk about that process. You guys are it it’s what you guys are winning is neck and neck. It’s like just talk about one the the environment for that game and like just like walk us through it. The whole Olympic was was um I want to say like one of my best experience just because of emotional it was it was so crazy from our start. I will say just because um it was our first time for us to play Wimi first of all um you know we had kind of like a new team with some new guys so you know we was try to see okay let’s try to create something and and make history you know um everybody we make sure everybody understand that playing the Olympic in your country this happened once in the lifetime you know so on we figured this out like we was together on everything we was playing together but to start the compet competition. We had a a bad start if if we’re being honest. You know, our start was pretty bad. We played Brazil. We won. We played Japan almost lost. We had the Matus Frazzo that hit the the four-point play at the end to go to overtime that we win. And then before the quarterfinal, we lost against Germany pretty bad like by 30 points or something. Uh so at that time everybody and I think it’s the first time that I said in the somewhere public right but the whole coaching staff with some of the people in the French Federation for them it was over cuz like we play Canada quarterfinals everybody was like there’s no way we’re going to beat them which it was crazy. It was just the players and then we we walking around looking like you know all the coach looking already for to blame somebody you know so like the the atmosphere was crazy and then Nico Batum and Nando do a great job of just bringing the team together and be like okay this is on us right whatever happened it happened right it’s just going to be us we already we already lost half of the team over there nobody believe in us like you know it’s us against the world kind of so when we went through that process And then we start the game in the quarter of finals against Canada. We was just dogs. It was like it’s it’s just no way, you know, like this is our proud like we’re just going to go over there. We’re home and we’re going to make it happen. So beating Canada, beating Germany, it just give us like an extra boost. Now we go to the finals was like whatever happened happen at least we made the final and you know we’re proud of this. Of course I was going you know to the final in my mind. I was like we going to beat we going to beat them like we home. It’s nothing’s going to happen today. like me home. So it was super confident but then you know it’s team USA you know the you play some of the best player in the world especially in those competition and then we we bought the best of uh Stephen Curry you know for for them to be able to beat us too. So you know I I be tell you know I remember at the end everybody was crying putting their hands down and I was just walking around. I I put everybody’s head up cuz I was like we got to be proud like we home like we made this happen. We made history you know we lost it okay but we play good. at least we give oursel a chance, you know. So, uh, the whole thing was was just amazing. And then, of course, being able to put that dunk also in the finals and I remember everybody screaming. I was watching over there, my mom, my dad, you know, they don’t really get a chance to see me play. So, be able to do all the stuff home with them just watching me course side. It was it was just a crazy feeling. And listen, it took a it took a all time Steph Curry performance to beat you guys. I mean like it wasn’t just a normal Steph Kurt like but this in real life it was man first of all the whole gym was team USA we got to talk about it was crazy it was like we was playing away cuz like the quarterfinals the semi-finals people don’t really want to come and see that they want to pay and see the finals right so what happened I think people already buy tickets knowing that USA was going to be there right so now it’s it’s the first game we play in Paris that we feel like, “Okay, they have more fans than us, right?” So, at the time when Curry is hitting those shots, they were screaming. It was crazy. So, you know, I remember I feel like every shot he was taking, he was going to be short for some reason. But then when he hit that two with the two defenders, I was like, “Oh [ __ ] he’s he’s on. He’s on like like let’s just let’s just take a time out or something. Like somebody foul him, but like like let’s just try to figure out something. We got we got to break his rhythm. It’s impossible.” So, you know, at that at that time it was it was really crazy, but you know, when you look back, you’ll be like, “Okay, we we bought the best out of them, and you know, it is what it is.” It was a good finals. No, I’m saying the most important question I have for you, how many since you were home, how many tickets you did you have to get for your family? Oh, for every game I was getting probably 10 10 tickets. I think 10 10 every game. That’s actually not bad. That’s I I thought it was gonna be I was going to get more than that, but listen the price. Hold on. We was like, we players, what are we talking about right now? Like I’m on the court. Hey, just just just wait till this season. It was going to find you going to find out about these ticket prices. Just wait. Believe me, I’m playing. I’m just going to be using the family tickets. That’s it. I ain’t pay no extra for nobody. You better not cuz they going to get up there, brother. You said Yeah. Yeah. home, you know, it’s it’s once in a lifetime family’s going to be there. I’m like thinking like, yeah, once in a lifetime means your entire family wants to come. Yeah. Like when it gets playoff time, I don’t like when people ask me if if people ask me for tickets during the playoffs or I do not respond. I’ve been doing that, too. I’m not going to lie. I do not respond cuz it’s like I get it, but at the same time, nah. like this like you know how many people like you know like I was telling some of my friends they was like you know if you had I was like listen I already got a big family first of all I’m trying to figure it out how I’m going to get all of them here you know then I got I got my wife I was like she got to be there right then she got brother sisters they wanted to come I was like okay let me try to see if I can the schools you got in right so this was like the first thing and then after that I was like if I get extra okay but if not I can’t say yo we want tickets yeah all right so I’m going to send you the link You put your credit card in. Here you go. I’ll see you there. That’s the That’s the best way to go about it. Ticketmaster.com. This Neverorg ordinary segment is brought to you by Bet 365. Going into the Olympics, but also kind of going into the finals, I’m sure your mindset was trying to win a gold pool. any part of you like this is a really amazing opportunity for me on a global stage to like show that I can play against the best and be back in the NBA? For sure. For sure. I feel like every not just the Olympic, I feel like every international competition, especially with a national team, it’s always a chance to be able to like prove yourself and and show skills, you know. Um, also another thing is I was I was I don’t know the whole Olympic I was just feeling good, you know, physically, mentally, everything seems to be at the right spot, you know. So I remember after I talk after we won the quarterfinals in Canada. Um, I went over there and I was talking crazy to the to like the fans and the the media and all the stuff, especially the French media cuz I’m like, you guys supposed to support us, you know? So I was just you know talking a little bit and then after the semi-finals I was talking for some more. I remember there was a reporter there and I was telling them like I think it’s time you know start you know teasing a little bit telling people that you know I was ready and then you know after the final when people was asking me and then I think I tweeted something saying that I was ready you know for whatever happened. So uh I think it was the right time for me to to come back you know. So I just felt it and I was like I’m going to make myself clear. uh that I want to come back. Got to put it into existence. Yeah. Facts. One thing I’m curious about, you obviously out of the league for five years. People talk a lot about how the league is constantly changing, evolving, developing more threes, etc. Like what are the biggest differences between the NBA when you left and then when you came back? Like was the volume of threes noticeably different or I mean people are so fast now. What’s going on? I was the first couple of games was looking exhausted, you know, and first of all, I was I was supposed to come and and play a couple of minutes here and there. The season started to be like, “Oh, listen. You might play the five and play a little bit more minutes.” I was like, “Yeah, I’m cool. You know, I want to play some minutes.” And then I was playing like 35 minutes. I was exhausted. But in general, just I feel like the game is so fast now. You know, people are really pushing the ball. Um, you see guys, they’re so athletic now. Everybody can dunk if feel like it, you know. So, it’s just it’s more there. I feel like the the game’s really involved in the movement, in the skills. Um, you know, people really get to the rim now. So, you really need to defend. So, all of this I really changed from when I was in Boston. So, I’m I’m curious cuz, you know, for for the roommate show, we’re very respectful of other organizations and fan bases. Um, but we we got we got we got to talk about Philly, bro. you got like what what was it like last year? Because obviously like when you went there obviously like the expectations was high and then expectations slowly slowly just skyfall. Yeah. obviously due to due to like unfortunate injuries, but like talk about that process because one you’re thinking like all right I’m we’re going in playoff team you know try to figure it out to you know they’re in the lottery and like guys are out but it’s a bigger opportunity yeah no I think first and foremost you know I want to give my respect you know to the whole organization you know for a bull giving me the second chance to be able to come back in the league you know this was amazing you know it just changed my whole life you to be honest and even the fans that always supported us the whole time. But yeah, no, I mean going to the season we have high expectation, you know, and to be honest when I was in training camp, I was looking around and I I felt like, okay, something to do there, you know. Um, but to be honest, and I’ve been thinking about it because a lot of people keep asking me, but I don’t know what what happened, you know, is to be, you know, people was injured. Um, so we we tried I would say, you know, I feel like we tried and then what really changed the team a little bit was in my opinion was the trades cuz I feel like we was there guy was just injur we we should have trust a little bit more that and and let and try to let the guys come back to be able to pursue try to uh get to the playoff and then I feel like when we changed that basically we changed you know four guys or something like that and then there’s like four new guys coming up and then it was a lot of guys that keep getting signed for 10 days contract here and there. So, it was it was hard to find the the chemistry, you know, with the teammates. But other than that, I would say we tried or at least I tried to give my best and everything every night to make sure that, you know, we got still got to show the positive sides. You know, I was not hurt. So, there’s no way um that I come out there and then be sloppy. you know, I just feel like it was just my mentality going to every games, you know, no matter what happened, I have to give everything on the court. You know, I think the one thing about Philly fans, um, when they see effort, I think they appreciate that more than anything. Like I feel like in all the sports around around the um city of Philadelphia, like if if they think you’re not giving it everything you got, they’re going to let you know about it. They let you know about it 100%. But I feel like they they respect hard work. They respect like work ethic and um obviously 100% effort. I think that’s the one thing that’s always constant when it comes to them like talking to players or criticizing players. I feel like if you just like Allan Iverson like one of my favorite players like like he obviously they never won an NBA championship but like he was always out there giving 110% every single night. And so like he’s beloved for that. I just I just feel like that’s what they respect the most. I feel like you you bring that. So I think that’s why you be a great addition for us and um but uh on the positive side, what was your favorite thing about the city of Philadelphia? Um I would have said a couple of things. First of all, the Philly cheese steak is amazing. Let’s be let’s let’s start with that. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Where where did you get your I was going to say it’s a fuel spot, but now me I was getting and it was next to my apartment. So it was Angelos’s. Yes. Minos Angeles. Do you mind do you mind sharing the rough heard about? Yeah. I was I can’t I can’t find that out pretty easily. I was going there all the time and they also sell pizzas which is amazing. Yeah. I never had I heard like this. I never had it. I never had that. You got the app. Leave me on it. No, he got he got the members app. You get like five she got his reward, brother. I’ve been going there all the time. No, this this is a definitely like a a great spot. But I think I think other than that, the city of Philadelphia is like history. Like, you know, it’s bunch of stuff to visit, just walk around with the kids. It was we just enjoy our time over there. You know, the people are really good. You know, we connect. Um they always show me a lot of love, especially when you see me on the street outside. Did he go to Isco? What’s that? Uh, you ain’t go to Eskabil. Damn. Isabel was number one. That’s my number one. That’s my favorite. Yeah. On South Street. I want to try that. But there but there’s two. But there’s two. They’re literally like 100 ft from each other. So, you got to go to the smaller one. The smaller one. The original. I want to try that for sure when we go there. I have to. Oh. What’s your What’s your take on Waw Wa? You know what? I’ve I think I’ve ordered one time there. I wanted to order I don’t know it was drinks or something we was missing. So we ordered that and then my order was completely wrong. They they bring me a bunch of food and stuff like that. I was like what is that? So I couldn’t understand but I never ate there or something like that. Yeah. Is it is it really like that? It’s it’s a it’s a east coast thing. It’s like a a lot of people don’t understand like you being from France, I don’t think you would truly understand like the phenomenon that Wawa is. Yeah. It’s like a It’s a culture thing. Okay. No doubt. I would try that for sure. You don’t No, I’m saying you don’t have to try it. I’m just saying you just even if you do try, you wouldn’t understand. It’s like there’s certain things in France that like if we if me and Josh were like, “Yo, like what is this?” you’d be like, “Oh, like it’s a big thing here, but like a lot of people don’t know.” Like if you’re not from France, you won’t know. Okay. I’m I’m still I mean up for the challenge, you know? I still want to try to figure it out. I want to see. Interesting. Gan, just switching gears a little bit. What was uh Walk us through the process of becoming a Nick. I was just about to say, please stop talking about We got to stop talking about Philly stuff, bro. Trash football team. Trash. all that, bro. Um, all right. Anyways, Eagles can suck on Friday and I was coming um to New York, it was it was amazing, first of all. Um, because for us, first of all, New York is the best uh place uh coming from France. Like for the family and everybody, it’s an easy trip first and foremost, right? But then teamwise, it was amazing. First of all, the run that those guys been having for a couple of years now has been amazing watching the team grow, you know, year after year, but especially just the character, you know, what they bring to the court. You know, I play against you guys. I was watching at the same time. I was looking like, oh my god, like, you know, they have good chemistry, you know, it seems like it’s, maybe I’m wrong, but it seems like it’s no problem. You know, there’s no ego. Everybody’s vibing in the same way. Everybody’s agree on everything watching this on the court, you know, and I was like, “Wow, great energy.” Uh, those guys are just play hard. They go over there, figure it out, play hard. And, you know, of course, I was watching the the playoff. So, watching the way you guys was just playing and be together. it was like, “Okay, this might be a a great opportunity for me to go over there, you know, play hard, you know, uh like I do, but at the same time just add uh what I I can do on the court and, you know, why not bring um my energy and all of the positive side to the basketball court, you know, but you know, just the fans, amazing fans, uh amazing stadium, you know, when you go to the arena, you see all these people coming out to the game, you know, it’s it it definitely add a little spice to the game, you know. So, all of these challenges, I was like, you know what? Let’s let’s try to do it. You know, I like the team. You know, the guys look like good guys, so why not? Was it difficult for you at all? Cuz obviously dur when when you made that decision like we weren’t I think they were at the end of the coaching, you know, search and all that. Like we didn’t have a coach in like was that difficult? Were you or was it just like okay I know what my role is going to be like no matter who the coach is like I’m going to be good. That’s a good question because I like I I kind of knew at the same time because I was like you know what every coach going to like a players that give everything on the court. That’s one thing you know so I was like if if I can control that and break that it will give me you know playing time minutes you know a role or whatever but I was like coming into that you got to play defense you got to play hard and then you know they will figure it out. Uh, no, I feel it. Um, yeah. No, I mean it’s it’s going to be great obviously the depth that we have and obviously what you what you bring in terms of being able to, you know, play big, play small, you know, stretch the court, rebound, defend. So, it’s going to be a good like what you bring is really like one of the things that we needed. We needed that and then we also needed, you know, uh, you know, scoring off the bench, which obviously JC is going to help. um a lot with uh so no I’m I’m excited about it. So really excited to be able to join you guys. You know when you watch a team they go to like um the conference finals of course you know it’s always excited to go over there and had your piece. U but at the same time just the competing side you know watching you guys over there compete every night it was just amazing to be honest. You know you watch you you see you hear the the fans and everything is just seems like oh this is the place to be. In our eyes, it is for sure. Have you um have you talked to Coach Brown yet? Yes, I did. When um I came to sign everything he was there. Uh we we talked for a little bit, you know, um outside of the basketball part, you know, just get to know him. Uh I think he wanted to know me, to know, you know, um where I’m from and, you know, my family and all of this stuff, you know. So, we we we had a great conversation for like um probably an hour or so or something like that. But yeah, I can tell he’s um great coach, you know, great guys. Of course, heard a lot of great things about him. Uh I had also like some players reaching out to me telling me great things about him. So, um I’m I’m sure this would be a great season. It’s been a consensus like it’s been very little Bassel talk obviously right now. It’s still like midsummer, still got a long way to open a night, but um him just trying to get to know everybody. Um yeah, I think it’s great. You get to know your players, get to know who they are, what makes them tick, everything, all that. And then going from there as a coach, like I really like the approach that he’s that he’s taken so far to get get to know his players. Christian, have you talked to anyone else on the team yet? And do you have do you and Pakome have a relationship from being in France? No, no, no. So Pack actually know his brothers. His brothers um we seen each other like on the on the court and stuff like that playing and watching him play or something like that. Uh, I think I played Call of Duty with him one time or 2K or something like that. So, like I kind of like know him from far, but like all of my friends are friends with him. So, I’m sure it’s going to be easy conversation to start off. And um the guys that I know a little bit more is Mo Dior because uh he’s a we have the same agent. So, when I I went there and we we talked for a little bit, but uh I’m going to start to know Impac a little bit more for sure. JB, you just had your camp in Chicago recently. It’s obviously want we want to hear from you on this one, but as well as as Josh, too. Um, how can young athletes choose better when it comes to prioritizing their time and training, you know, aka working smarter not harder, but yeah, how do they how do they choose better? I think choosing better starts with like choosing your priorities. You know, when you’re in high school, you know, you kind of want to be a kid, you want to be a teenager, you know, you want to enjoy like high school, enjoy your high school experience. And I think it just starts with choosing your priorities. And obviously school and for me it was school and basketball. Also, like my social life is kind of put on the back burner. So, um I mean that’s just being smart. That’s just being smart. And then if you do that, if you get your work done early and then you can just chill and relax, have fun with your friends. And um I mean that’s how I did it and it’s paid dividends for me. And um I think when you’re that young, you have to like work hard like not just going to the gym and playing pickup. Like that’s part of it or playing the AU tournaments, but like you got to work on your actual game. got to put in time to do like the simple stuff like the the fundamentals and and stuff like that. And then you got to build off of that. But it starts with basically like getting in the gym and not just playing. You got to work on stuff when no one else is watching by yourself. So speaking of being in the gym, it’s question for both of you guys, but obviously the game has changed a lot since maybe you guys were younger in high school, etc. But if you were, you know, if you were in high school now as a guard, what are what are the skills that you would work on now? And what would you make a priority to develop? I don’t know. I I think the biggest thing is shoot a lot more threes. Um, yeah. I mean, I mean, I wouldn’t say shoot a lot more threes. I would say honestly just focus on your form because like the form is everything. And obviously as you get stronger, like you can move back and back and back and shoot from farther out. But I think so many guys who are younger, maybe not in high school, but younger, they start shooting threes at such a young age and their form is terrible. Not necessarily shooting more threes, just making sure you have your mechanics right. It was something like D book said basically like said the same thing and he was just like yeah like my dad wouldn’t let me like beat the kid that’s out there like jacking up threes like when I was when I was younger I wasn’t that strong I couldn’t I I could get the ball to the rim but it wasn’t with good form and it was like it was just mid-range and just working on form and technique and technique and then obviously as you grow and get bigger and get stronger you’re able to you know you know shoot further but as long as you have that like technique you You know, it it’s the best thing. And like for me, I didn’t really have that growing up. So now I’m like trying to like change some of the techniques of my shooting. And it’s harder once you already have those habits. What do you think of this era of like like French basketball players now? But I feel like it’s been so many like first round picks come from France and like them being top lottery picks. Like what do you what do you where’s France basketball going right now? I mean I’m not I’m not going to lie. I’m I’m impressed. Like I I just I’ve been watching those kids and they have the right attitude, you know, they have the right energy when you watch them like they want to learn, they want to get better. So it’s definitely a great sign for us for the years to come. Um the thing now that people don’t know about it then they will have to um match that is the pressure because now everybody talk good about us. So now when the competition is going to start, we have to go over there and then be able to to to to show everybody that okay, yeah, we the national team, right? Because the thing is like we have a competition starting I think next month, right? Uh we have a couple of guys that’s not there, but at the same time we still have a great team, right? So not everybody’s going to wait for us. Doesn’t matter if Wim is not there, Rudy not there, if I’m not there, right? They’re going to be like you guys was there so you guys are accountable. So, I think it’s is great for the future, but at the same time, it’s like, oh my god, how we going to pick 12 guys out of out of these guys, right? So this this is going to be another conversation but I think is is great for us and it shows a lot about um the French level because our league I think is one of the strongest league in Europe uh just in term of like athleticism and um people are just strong like you you come to France and you if if you just go like on a regular day in Paris on the playground and you watch those play like those guys are not pros but they play hard and they going to score and then They’re going to talk like he’s he’s he’s a starter in the NBA, like you know, like they they they have the mentality of just compete, you know, which is which is really good. I feel like uh most casual NBA fans hear about elite European prospects maybe like the year or two before they get drafted. They’re not really hearing about them when they’re like 12, 13, 14 years old. But when was uh when did you originally hear about Wemi? And what was like what were your like how old was he and what were your first impressions? I don’t I can’t remember how old is he? He was sorry when I heard of him, but he was he was really young. He was he was not even pro yet, but he was this guy that was so tall, you know. The only thing that I was worried about it was he was really skinny. So, I was like, I know he’s going to put on some muscle and I was like, when he’s going to come to league, they’re going to change his body. You know, this is not going to stay like this. So, I kind of like I kind of knew this was going coming, but I was like, “Okay, he’s really really skinny, you know?” But what impressed me was the skills. I looked this guy and he’s dribbling between the legs, jumping, shooting in one legs, doing this. I’m like, “Who who’s this kid?” Like, who does that? Like, you you’re just too tall to be doing all of that, you know? So, it was it was the first impression when I play against him, you know? I was really expecting him to, you know, compete. you know me, I’m like, “Okay, we French, but like we compete at the end of the day.” You know, I always want to go at the best player and I want him to go at me. You know, it is what it is. So, after that, when he changed his body and went to the league and then I I see like his transformation and I was like, “Oh my god, yeah, Wim is the next the next one for sure.” JB, you remember uh walkth through just about when be Christmas day walk or the day before Christmas Day uh Christmas Eve walk through when we were going about uh talking about the Spurs when we were when Tib was like yeah when be man shoot like 11 threes and me me and you looking at each other we like man he ain’t shooting no 11 threes y’all bugging he came No no no Josh no it wasn’t it wasn’t 11 he’s shooting like 16 threes a game. We’re like, man, shooting 16. T just be exaggerating stuff sometimes just to make sure dudes is locked down. Pretty sure he shot 11 in the first half. Me and Josh were like bombs. He shot bomb. It wasn’t like they was like Yeah, they wasn’t feet on like damn it touching the line. He was cashing too. This I I literally just looked. I’m like, bro, what’s his stat line? Yeah. was 42 and 18. But but but this is the craziest thing. That’s why like I tell people is you’re going to try your best to stop him, right? But dude dude dude going to shoot 15 threes a game. Like he going to make some. He’s not going to miss 15 threes. He’s going to make some. And and some of the shot selection is it’s like you you look at him like, “D you ain’t about to shoot that. Come on, cash.” and he turn around look look like it’s not even him shooting it. You be like what is going on? So so you know like Wii is is is he’s that type of player where like I love the Olympics practices like me and him was going at it every day and it was amazing. Like me it makes me better cuz you know I got this tall guy I got to find a way to score around him without getting blocked. You know even the the shots every shot you take you feel like he’s he’s this close to block you. So, you know, like you you arc the ball and found a way to score. So, uh I think it’s it’s amazing to be able to be with him and and practice with him every day. I’ve heard this name for the longest time and like I was just like there’s no way they actually call him that. But that’s that’s like your nickname, the dancing bear. I mean, I don’t want to like make it official like like people see me in the street, they be like, “Yo, dancing bear.” Like it’s it’s not like that, right? Do they say dancing bear or do they say it in French? No, they say dancing bear. But wow. I mean, this is more like in the state. In in France, a a couple of people will. I’m not going to lie, though. It’s like Yeah, some people will. Um, but my my friends and people around call me um the Bear. The Bear. Yeah, the Bear. This is like the the name that pretty much everybody call me around here. So, well, I’m tell you this now. I am not calling you the Bear. Wow. This is crazy. But but first of all, you you you got to say my first name right to try to call me Josh. Josh, how you say his name? Josh is I pronounced it right. Guan Guan Yabusi. Hold on. Hold on. But same thing I told uh Pakcomi Dia. I said we we in the states now, brother. The diet bouncing. The diet is crazy. It’s crazy. I I caught I called I called him that the whole year and it took Muel Muel finally like in February just started dying. We was in the locker room and he just started crying. I’m like, “Bro, like what’s up? Like why you just like why you just over there just laughing?” And he was like, “Bro, I finally looked at his name tag, his name, his little like locker name, and it says the diet and he just started.” It took him like four months to realize why I was calling him. Oh my god. Yeah, man. That’s how you pronounce it in in the States, bro. I I I got I got you, though. I feel you. But listen, G. It’s like Gershan. So, it’s not W. It’s like Gershan, not Gchan. N see the Gounce So, no. Yeah, you pronounce it. Hey, guess what? Guess what? Just call me Yaboo. It’s f I’m fine with Yu. Okay, there we go. Yaboo. You know what I’m saying? Simple. You I can’t call you the wrong name the whole year. You ain’t a rookie. I can do it at the do. We good. Gan, have you ever watched the TV show The Bear? No, I heard of it. Guess what? Somebody just told me that like I think a couple days ago and they told me it was really good. It’s good. I heard it was good. Yeah, I have to watch it. Yeah, it’s good. I gota Yeah. Gan, you watch Love Island? No, no, no. I just I just don’t watch those those TV shows. Like, I’m just out of it. Like, I’m Hey, man. Elite TV. No, no, no. It’s it’s it’s like it’s the same TV shows like one of my friend I forget the name of it. It was like chicks only chicks there and they fighting every day like I don’t know I don’t know what’s the point of like that sounds like love and hip hop. It’s it’s kind of like it. I think it’s like a girl that she taking care of all the girls there but they fighting every day. They’re going out. I don’t know what’s the I don’t know. I just don’t watch this stuff. All right. Well, enough of that. Uh, so how how did you how did you start hooping? Like what’s the what’s the origin story? Yeah, cuz um I actually start playing um I was boxing when I was a kid. Um cuz my dad was a boxer and he kind of like trained my whole family. Uh we didn’t have no choice. It was what it was. But you were a boxer? Yeah, growing up I was. Josh, do not call this band the wrong name. We didn’t need you this year. I can buy weed now, brother. Listen, I retired from out of this after the the thing that happened here in Madrid. I’m I’m just, you know, no violence. We we in peace now. I’m I’m good. I I start um playing I was boxing and then I was playing a little bit of soccer growing up. Um just because here it’s the it’s the main sport, you know, you play soccer with everything you have since your kid. And then um you know, growing up I was kind of like um being a little bit taller than everybody. And then um in school you know we have a basketball classes and the coach of the basketball classes was actually a player of the basketball team in my uh city and then you know after like a few days he was like okay like you you ever thought about playing basketball like you’re tall and then you finish pretty good like you know you got good movement. Um you know he kept telling me that you know come to practice you will see. Uh and then uh you know I was young I was my friend you know I’m like I want to be a soccer player. I don’t know what is he talking about. So after a few weeks, I was like, you know what? Like just give it the chance. And then when I went there the first time, it was I don’t know the the feeling, the the people that was there. It was just different from what I grew up and you know, people around me in my city. So I was like, it just take me outside a little bit of, you know, the the hood, I want to say, where I was from. So it was like, okay, this is pretty good. you know the different people different different you know sport you know basketball is just it’s it’s beautiful sport you know so going from there I start going on YouTube a little bit and watching uh videos and then um um you know everybody had the the basketball jersey when I was going to practice right me I was just putting up with like the Adidas you know like with no brand or nothing you know I knew nothing right so I see everybody was like a Anthony uh Jersey, Bryant, Jersey, Kevin Garnett, like you know, all of these people. So now I’m like, “Okay, interesting. I about to see.” Then I start watching Kobe Bryant and then from that day, it just took me to where I am today, you know? Like I learned so much from watching Kobe’s like, you know, his mentality, the practice, you know, what it takes to be um the best, you know. So uh that’s why he’s my favorite player till this day. But you know, watching him really put me into that right direction and I was like, “Okay, this is what I want to do.” We’re going to play a great game called Clean or Foul Hoops Edition presented by Beyond Meat, where clean protein is key. All right, so basically I’m going to rattle off some general things and we’re going to hear everyone’s opinion on if it’s a clean part of the game or if it’s foul and needs to be ejected from your game. Hooping and ankle socks. Oh, foul. There’s only one person who could pull it off. His name is JJ Reic. Kelly Olen does it. Makes me mad. Growing up, I used to see the ankle socks with the Hashi 2K4s all the time as a little kid. I actually probably did that at some point. You probably saw me foul baiting. I mean, technically foul. Technically, technically. Technically, technically foul. Maybe just don’t foul. Seems like an easy fix to me. Easy fix. You must warm up like you play. Uh, foul. What? I feel like I think it’s foul. I think you can get to that point, but I don’t think you need it because like like your warm-ups like you’re you’re not like you’re not you can’t warm up like how you play. Like I think warm up should be like 80% 85%. You probably start at like 60 then you get to like 80 85. It’s a warm up, right? So, yeah, I would say foul. So, Josh, what percent of your game pace are you warming up at? 30. Yeah, foul for Josh. Okay. Taking charges and pickup. Foul. Yeah. Foul. Absolute ejection worthy foul. It’s legant, too. That’s just a big no no. t-shirt under the jersey. Uh foul for most people. Some people can all clean. Who is it not a foul for, Josh? Um trying to think who does it. Bi does it. Um I think Zo does it or at least used to. Um yeah, I mean like there’s certain people I feel like if you do it, you at least got to get some buckets. Are we talking about strictly league right now? Either. And then I’m gonna say clean because I feel like everyone at some point has done the t-shirt under the jersey during AU. Slap ass celebration. Clean or foul? Foul. So both if it’s No, no, no. If it’s like blatant foul. So both you guys are getting ejected. I don’t do it blatantly. First of all, I’ve actually never done the Josh. I don’t do it. Never. You don’t do it. All right. must be playing tricks on us, JB. Yeah. Nonshooters with the shooting sleeve. I think it’s clean. I work. But of course you would think it’s clean. Let’s Of course you would think it’s clean. Hey, it’s all right. I knew a lot more, so it’s all right. If you’re a nonshooter with the shooting sleeve with no pad, foul. If you have a pad, you can take excuse. If you wearing straight shooting sleeve, no pad, it’s nasty work. and you can’t shoot. No fouls here. We’ll give fans the opportunity to to ask you some questions. So um the first one is from Theo J. Kalais. What rules from your league would you bring to the NBA if you were commissioner? That’s a good question. I think I would have probably put it the other way around. Like if it’s a rule from Europe that I would bring to the NBA, um I would have let the big guys or anybody to like clean the rim. Like it’s so many athletic guys in the NBA. I’m telling you. Like like you think about it like this, then when it happened, it’s it’s it’s beautiful. Like like you know when those those little bump you think [Laughter] like I I love this. And also I will let the the paint the 3 second these got to go cuz it’s like it’s like it’s like the defense even when you you throw zone you got to get out all like you just in the movement you know and here like you just sit in the paint like you got to find a way to score over the big tall guy that we have in here you know get him out that paint. Yeah. Yeah. 30 seconds. Get him out of that pain, baby. Uh, from henry_porter for a team, who was the first player who called you and became a neck? Uh, or I would to say probably two players. Um, no, it was it was probably three. First one, I want to say I think it was Mario Aia. Um, just because he was he was playing with the Knicks before and then uh we was together in Madrid. So, you know, we you know, the whole year we we sent each other memes from like New York people, you know, the subways and everything was going on and you know, and you know, the whole year was like, you know, only New York, right? But then when I signed there, we start laughing. It was like, yo, what you about to have another kid over there? Like, what you going to be dancing? Like, you know, pop smoke top, you know, Mario just crazy, right? So, he was saying bunch of stuff. We laughed. I think Frankina called me too cuz he was there. Uh we had a great conversation, you know, just um remember memories when he was in Knicks and uh Nico Batum sent me a text cuz he cuz um he was I think he was pushing a little bit for me to go like the Clippers and stuff like that. So like he he didn’t even like say congratulation. He was just mad. He was like did it did the Clippers talk to you? I was like yeah but like you know like it was nothing really you know but the Knicks you know it was a real offer and it was really good. He was like, “All right, all right.” I was like, “Okay.” I was like, “Thank you.” But yeah. No. Uh Yeah. No, I think it was it was probably like the only two players kind of like we we talked. JB, why you didn’t reach out, bro? You supposed to be the captain. It did. Yeah. I texted him. It did. It did. We we we got some smoke right away. I think it was the next day. Uh uh Sam put us in the group chat and we talked. Yes. I was expecting Joshua to say something, too. But you know, it’s okay. Josh won’t say nothing to nobody. Josh is a ser [ __ ] I ain’t have his number, bro. Josh can’t even say your name. Right. That’s all good. I was waiting for someone to to send me his number, bro. But I didn’t. You know, no one did. You know what I mean? I got bad cell service. Right. Right. Right. What’s that? Jacob Blocks_. Which city has better food? Paris or New York City? That’s not That’s That’s not That’s not close. That’s That’s not really a question. I mean, Paris. New York, right? Yeah. Right. Paris. Paris all day. I think I think just Paris. Paris. Yeah, for sure. Amazing food. JB, you got back from Paris and were raving about your the meals you had. I mean, I didn’t have one bad meal. It’s just what it is. I mean, it was only there for like 2 days, but I mean, that’s at least what? Yeah. Six meals. Great wine. Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Great wine. Alcoholic. Great wine, bro. Yeah. Oh my god. Oh, speaking of this, hold on. Now we just talk about restaurants. Totally off topic. I just want you guys’ opinion. Who has what food spot? What food city is better? New York or Miami? New York. What’ you say? Everything that’s in Miami is just is a stem from New York. Thank you, Gan. What you say? That’s uh it’s a good question. I’ I’ve been having a lot of great cuz cuz I’m I always go like in the summer probably like a month in Miami so I can work out. So I go over there and then there’s bunch of restaurant that we tried with the family especially this summer and it was it was pretty pretty decent. So, um, it’s 50/50 on that for me. Josh, that’s New York. I say New York. I mean, you you guys you guys going to take me to dinner in New York. So, maybe I will I will see the difference. It’s cuz I never had like Oh, 100. We’ll do that. You know, JB’s playing. We going somewhere expensive. Yeah. Yeah. I got I got I got him the first. Yeah, we going somewhere expensive, too. For sure. Appreciate it. Where we going? I don’t know. Where we going? Something I want something like bougie. He’s paying good wine list. Joe’s pizza. No, no, no. We going something expensive. Go somewhere French. Go somewhere French. Like Danielle or Le Bernard. That’s a good idea. Let’s do that. See that? He brought you on for a reason. You see Matt try do Matt try to do an accent? Danielle. Daniel. Danielle. I’m not doing this for you. Oh my god. Hey. Hey, Gers. We appreciate you coming along the pod, my dog. I know it’s I know it’s late out there uh where you are, man. So, we appreciate it. Um to everyone else that tuned in, man, we appreciate you guys uh showing love and support and make sure you guys tune in uh every Thursday for new episodes. Actually, was winding down season 2, so next couple Thursdays. But much love and appreciate it. Thank you for having me, fellas. Thank you, guys. See you. [Music]
