MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jul 24, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
Hello and welcome. Thanks for joining us. MLB the show with a good one coming at you. It’s the San Diego Padres’s taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. And now, please welcome first pitch coming at you right after the break. for St. Louis Cardinals about to get started here. And for the Cardinals here this afternoon, Gordon Grapho and Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. and he’s been able to move his pitches around, add in some trap, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. [Applause] Fernando Tatis Jr. the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one that hits the dirt. Two and 0. And that chops in for a strike. [Applause] Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Everything came together for him. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Luis Arise stands in. swinging a foul straight back. Arise 27 years old and they went out and made a trade for him last season. Check on the runner. Tatis dives back in. Runn to go. And that one fouled off. Almost got him. Two strikes. Now a high-fly ball out to left center. Here grabs it on the run. Batting third as we take a look at the Padres’s lineup and no doubt a big factor in this series so far. Elias Diaz. Well, Boog, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position, are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Manny Machado batting with one down. Takes the strike. Felt impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch. That’s the key. Try to get ahead in the count. Then you can play around a little bit more as the at bat expands. Grapho picks over. Tatiz dives back in. Here comes the one. And that close the inside corner and one and two. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. Tatis the base runner at first with one out. Next offering way off the plate. Hit in the air left field. Here makes the grab on the run. Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed. Sander Bogarts. It’s Sander Bogarts now singing he’s never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire career. And first offering is fouled off. Two outs. Outside low and the count is one and one. One and one. [Music] Cardinal Cardinal. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Swing and a base hit. Throw in holds the lead runner at second. Two on now with two away. Gavin Sheets. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. swing and a miss. There’s the change up. Then he really sells the change up with that arm action. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. First and second, two down. And that one is lifted in the air. And it falls. Here comes Tatis around third. He will score. And they take the lead and it’s an RBI single. One- nothing. Always feels good when you come through and get your team on the board first. You know what they say, he couldn’t have thrown it out there any better than that. And certainly the case that time. Just flared it back behind the second baseman and dropped it in there. Jose Glaciius gets a chance to hit. Now first pitch doesn’t find the zone. At this point, the clean inning is over. Got to settle in, focus on the hitter, and get out of it with minimal damage. [Applause] Ball. That’s outside. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. [Applause] And another ball. It’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game, but here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on. Let’s see if they can cash in. And here it comes. That catches the outside corner. And now three balls and a strike. And strike two. Three and two. Two aboard, two outs. [Applause] headed down the line and no one can get to it. It’s a foul ball. [Applause] Puts it in the air out towards left center. Scott sizes this one up and that’ll do it. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now one- nothing. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here in St. Louis, today’s starting pitcher, U Darvish. What do you got on him, Chris? Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the ERA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that RA will have dropped over time. Come on, Brendan. Brendan Donovan, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And the one top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And that is out of play. [Music] And there’s a ball. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with in the air on the infield. Diaz has a beat on it and there’s one down. Now we take a check of the St. Louis Cardinal lineup. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Mason Win and Boo, you and I were talking about him before the game. He’s got good speed and if you watch him in this game, he’s that type of guy that’s very smart. He doesn’t have this just eye popping speed, but he knows how to use it. And he’s very intelligent on the base pass to get to the next base, to get around the bases, and ultimately score runs. Swing and a high-fly ball right at field. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Batting third designated hitter, Alex. Two outs, space is empty. Next is the designated hitter, Alec Burlson. Come on, Alex. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Music] That misses. And that’s ball one. Just Two outs. Base is empty. And there’s a foul ball on the ground. Machado zips it to first. That’s a third out. One, two, three go to Cardinals and it remains one- nothing. Back here at Bush Stadium all set for the start of the inning stepping in for San Diego. Jake Croninworth Grapho back to work and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. [Applause] headed towards the corner and it jumps the wall in foul territory for an automatic double. Well, there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that. You get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a throw or getting your uniform dirty. And now you’re just looking for the next guy to kind of do the same thing. Maybe put one in the gap so you can jog home as well. And now it’s going to be Bryce Johnson. That’s ripped. Base hit. Oh, the throw is over his head. Now second and third and nobody out. Batty Knight catcher Elias Diaz. Here’s Elias Diaz. Golden opportunity right here. fouled off. He was late. [Applause] that misses the zone and the count one and two. Croninworth the runner at third. Johnson at second with nobody out. [Applause] and a swing and a miss. And that is a big first down. He just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count off and two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit here. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. That’s a slider for a strike. Tatis is so athletic. He probably could have carved out a career in other sports if he wanted, but he grew up in a baseball family with baseball in his blood. Now the 01. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. This is situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. That one close rule to ball and it’s two and one. It’s a big opportunity right here, but I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. Tatis waits. Fouls one off. Two and two. Two on, one out. Three ball. This one in the dirt. And well done to keep it close. And they’re all loaded up. Take your base. Well, the stage has been set for this offense. Boo. It’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here. So, bases all loaded up now. The number two hitter. Luis Aas fly to left his first time in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. [Applause] And he takes one right on the black and the count is 0 and two. Gary Simmons has the plate duty in this one. Well, with Simmons, it’s not always your standard strike zone. It kind of gives a little extra in some parts of the zone and then can be tighter in others. But I think the important thing is he doesn’t get labeled as inconsistent. So you got to stay ready up there. Oh, that’s out. Going to count one and two. Yeah. One of those umpires you just have to know what to expect, right? Exactly. Swang and a line drive. And that’s a base hit into right field. One runs in. Runner at third. Puts on the brakes. Base is still loaded and still only one away. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runscoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. So, bases loaded with one away. Here’s Machado. He’s 0 for one. And Manny gets a piece. Traffic on the bases with one already in here in the top of the second. Check. Swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Got him. Huge strike out there. Well, I think that was just a case of a hitter quitting on a pitch. He was looking fast ball and didn’t see it out of the hand and just left the bat on his shoulder. That was a change up right over the plate. Probably not the location he was looking for, but the change of speeds is what fooled him and he got the out. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. Swings through that one out in front that time. Oh, and one, [Applause] the 01. And that one fouled off. [Applause] That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. [Applause] That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. That two seam fast ball is usually coupled with a slider away. And when a hitter’s conscious of the pitch in, it’s hard for him to cover middle away. And that’s where a pitcher can really finish off that batter. Off the mark there. Now two and two. They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. So K marks the attack for X. So one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now a two nothing ball game. Back after this on the show. Back in St. Louis as the Cardinals come up to hit here in the last of the second. Here comes Wilson Contrus. Pulls that one foul. Darbish kicks, delivers. That one’s in there. That’s strike two. That’s a little bit low. Next one misses. It’s two and two. [Applause] Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one away. Batty fifth. Third baseman Nolan Aronado. Here’s Nolan Aronado. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Nolan. And the first pitch misses for ball one. One out. Base is empty. That’s inside. And that one fouled off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. [Music] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Here’s a two- two now. One miss. [Applause] Fights it off. He’ll see another. Yeah. All right. St. Louis. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Music] The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. And that’s their first base runner of the game. Breaking ball in that 32 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. [Applause] Mason win now at the plate as he swings through strike one. Okay, swing now. He had his mind made up. As soon as that ball left the hand of the pitcher, he was going to swing at it. Maybe a two ball. Five. Four. He’s out. Three. It’s a double play. And that’ll do it for the inning. No runs, no hits, no errors. End of two here at Bush Stadium. It’s the Padres’s two and the Cardinals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Leading off, Gavin Sheets. missed with a change up. Ball one. You know, these Padres’s really impressing me with the quality of their at bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. Looking at the numbers, they’ve got four hits when they’re behind in the count. That says they are absolutely battling at the plate and just not giving up despite what the count says. And another ball. And if you’re a manager or a hitting coach, you love to see your guys really fighting for every at bat, every pitch. It tells you a lot about how they showed up to the ballpark today. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Jose Glacius the next up for the Padres’s fly to center his first time. He’s 0 for one. Sheets gets his lead at first. Nobody out. [Applause] Swanging a ball drilled center field. Scott sizing this one up and out number one on the grab. Now batting second baseman Jake Croninworth. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Doubled in his first AB. Let’s get Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Squirts away a little bit. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. There’s a 1-1 swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. One ball, two strike. That’s a ball in the dirt. misses and that’s ball three. That’s good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken back as you jog back to the dugout. He came out of his mechanics there. typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time a little anxious. [Applause] Now it’s the switch hitting outfielder Bryce Johnson. One for one with a single so far. First pitch misses. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. I got one ball, one strike. That clips the corner. Back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Struck him out looking. No runs on no hits, no errors, and a runner left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Padres’s two and the Cardinals nothing. [Applause] Back here in St. Louis, now it’s the right fielder, Jordan Walker. Jordan Walker and ball one to the right fielder. 10. This ball’s chopped on the ground. Arise takes it to the bag. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Batting eight. catcher Pedro Pah. Pedro Pah the next to hit. Pedro. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Chris, when you take it to stadium, I think one of the things that I always contemplate is where are you? And in St. Lewis Bush Stadium, you know exactly where you are with the arch in the background. They mow it into the lawn, the gateway arch basically goes from line to line and out towards center field and then the retired numbers, the championship banners. I mean, it really shows off the history of this proud franchise. Yeah, Boo. And this city is always just covered in red, especially during the baseball season, but they’ve added that ballpark village out there in left center field. very accessible to come into this city, stay downtown, get to the ballpark and taking a game in a great setting. He’ll do it himself. Two up, two down. Batting night, center fielder, Victor Scott. I Victor Scott now at the plate. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. This guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. Pitch misses. One and0. Fast for a strike. Shortened the bun and missed it. One and two. Darvish delivers. That one misses and the count is two and two. Two balls, two strikes. Lined and that’s a base hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. So, the batting order turns over and here’s the St. Louis leadoff man, Brendan Donovan. First time up was a pop out. Rudder takes off, pitching for a strike. Throw save. That’s a stolen base. Well, that steel right there is wanting to take advantage of having a really good hitter at the plate. Now they’ve got a much better shot at bringing home a two-out RBI. [Applause] That one’s in there and it’s 0 and two. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Ball one there. Two strikeles. [Applause] That misses and a count now. Even up. Two outs and one in scoring position. That count is full in the dirt. Blocked. Ivonne Herrera in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. So now two on and two outs. That’s a tough one to swallow right there if you’re on the mound. You’re ahead in the count 02 and you just couldn’t find a way to put him away. It’s going to be frustrating if that one comes back to bite him. First and second, two outs. And up next for St. Louis, Ivon Herrera. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great getting under pressure this year. Tying run is at first here in the last half of the third. [Applause] Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. So, the Cards strand a couple and they’re down two nothing. Welcome back. And now on the mound to start the fourth, Sunny Gray coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. And now it’s Elias Diaz. went down on strikes his first time through. Foul ball. Hit hard on the ground to the right side and it goes just foul. [Music] in the dirt now. One and two. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Andre Palante preparing to come on if needed. Ley getting cranked up as well. [Applause] [Music] Here’s a one-two and that’s outside. [Music] had a good eye there. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Ripped on the ground to second, throws to first. Leadoff hitter retired in the fourth. Now batting the center fielder, Fernando Tatis Jr. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatiz Jr. I think when you contemplate him as a player, the first thing you think about is defense and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on, that’s going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about. Now, Sigi, this is a guy that grew up in big league clubouses, and it’s something that you see throughout the game, sons whose fathers also played the majors. I can only imagine the comfort level of being in the ballpark. For those kids who are fortunate enough to have a dad that played in the big leagues, then being on the baseball field, for some it’s pressure. For them, they feel that they are right at home. That’s down and in. Two balls, two strikes. This one lifted in the air left field. Here makes the grab for the second out. Now batting the first baseman, Luis Arise. Two down, base is empty. And now the first baseman, Luis Araz on the ground to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Nothing doing there for the Friars, but they’re on top two nothing. ready to go. Bottom four. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Alec Burlson. Berles. Burlson measures 6’2 in 225 lbs. And he’s usually a first baseman, but today he’s the designated hitter. Some people say that first baseman kind of have the day off regularly because they don’t run around a whole lot, but when you think about it, they are involved in just about every single play and there’s a lot of stress that gets put on their legs. So, a well-deserved day at the DH spot. He’s been pitching well, but going through this middle of the order second time through, we’ll see what kind of adjustments are being made. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. That one ripped and one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases into second easily with a lead off double. He went up there and got it with two strikes. I’m not going to leave this in the umpire’s hands. I’m going to be aggressive. It was in a location where he could get those arms extended that he loves to do. So, nice job right there coming back in that bat. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Wilson Contreras next up for the Cardinals. And the slider just misses. [Music] Man at second. Rolled softly but that goes foul on the ground to third. Handled by Machado. Fires across the diamond. One out in the bottom of the fourth. Now batting third baseman Nolan Aronado. Natto comes in to take his cuts. Walked his first time. want to know. [Applause] Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Burlson over at second. One down. And he grounds one to the right side. Throws the first in time. And they get Aronado for the out. Now batting shortstop Mason now on for St. Louis Mason win. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. The shorts stop takes the ball. So man scoring position and now the tying run comes to the plate. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. [Applause] [Applause] swing and he popped it up. Makes the grab and the inning is over. The Cards leave one. They trail things here two nothing. Ready now for the fifth inning. And now it’s Manny Machado. Basement. Manny Machado. [Music] Gray back to work. Liner. And this could be trouble. Around first and hustling for second. And one pitch into the inning. It’s a leadoff double. went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Anytime you can drive a ball into the gap the other way, it feels so good and that’s when you know you’re right where you need to be at the plate. It’s even better when it gets you extra bases. Got to love looking in at your dugout and seeing your teammates fired up. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Now here’s Xander Bogarts now one for two and a fast ball in there for a strike at 91 [Applause] runner in scoring position. Nobody out here and we’re in the top of the fifth. Got it. Not what you’re looking for after the lead off double. A strike out. And there’s one away. Next for the Padres’s, Gavin Sheets. [Applause] And that one upstairs. There’s the swing and a miss. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Next offering is fouled back. Breaking ball. And that got him. He had him one two and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. So digging in now for San Diego, Jose Glaciius bowl for two in this one. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Well, in this situation with runners on, you got to get ahead in the cal so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there on the ground to third. They get the tag on him and that’s two. One left for San Diego, but they hold the two nothing lead. Back here in St. Louis, ready to go for the last half of the inning. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Jordan Walker. Walker. swing and a miss as he was late that time. You know, these Cardinals doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient bats out of them. Starter’s leash has to be getting tighter with his pitch count where it is. But so far, he’s been really effective in this one. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Slider got him for strike three. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting him away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Pedro Pah next up for the Cardinals in there for strike one. You know, sometimes it just takes getting to the bullpen in order to be able to score runs, and that might be the case today. Late swing fouled off. [Music] They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. The Red Birds trailing by two. Last half of inning number five. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, one of the things that hitters will do is they’ll look for that red dot on the baseball as is coming in to let them know what the pitch is. And if they see the red dot, it’s typically a slider. But when a guy’s got a really tight one with high spin rates, very difficult to determine. And that’s probably why we saw a swing and miss right there. Just a nasty pitch at the plate. Victor Scott first pitch just misses. Counts one and0. [Music] right through there for a strike. All this offense has just been locked down. Almost five full innings of shut out baseball. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Well, you can’t really adjust your game plan for that last pitch. Guy hasn’t thrown it very much. You got to focus on the stuff that he’s throwing up there most of the time. swing and a highf fly ball to left. Sheets settles under it and makes the catch and the inning is over. And we’re back. And now here is Jake Croninworth. And that misses. And that’s ball one. Movement in the bullpen for the Cardinals. Jojo Romero, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Mod the right-hander also getting loose. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. One and one. That one lined into left field and that’s base hit and the leadoff man aboard. Fast ball off the plate a little bit but a really nice job of going with it. Punched it to the opposite field for that knock. So, a man at first and the batter now Bryce Johnson in there and it’s one swing at a hard hit liner up the middle and a base throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Back to back base hits. Other than ripping one into the gap or blasting one over the wall, there aren’t a whole lot of hits that are more satisfying than a nice line drive into center field. So that definitely felt good. First and second, no outs. Stepping in for San Diego, Elias Diaz. [Applause] They won’t test it here. Bases loaded, no outs. Up next for the Padres centeriel. That ball was absolutely ripped. 111 off the bat. And I’m pretty sure it started to whistle after it left the bat. I think I heard that too, Boo. And these are the moments we appreciate when we can look at Statcast and just see exactly what the data is. Always so much fun to see what numbers pop up. Tatis in the box now. Takes strike one. [Applause] They need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup something. But you got to make some. And that’s through the swing. It’s a strike out. Luis arrives the next up for the Padres’s arriving [Applause] to look the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play and fouled off. [Applause] Breaks his bat and pops it up and it’s caught for the out. Man, it’s so frustrating. You got a couple of runners on. You want to try to drive in at least one run. Maybe you get a little too big with the swing. Pops out right there. And I tell you what, nobody’s more frustrated with that at bat than him. Manny Machado up to the plate. One for three. [Applause] [Applause] Fast the inside corner for a strike. They say it’s the best pitch in baseball. Strike one. You get ahead on a good hitter as well. Gives a little bit more confidence to move to the at bat. [Applause] Two outs. This one is blasted. A no doubter. Grand slam. An absolute smash to left. It’s 6 nothing. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. And I could feel that swing from the booth. Well, a great job here of staying within himself. You know that if you get a knock, you’re going to drive in a couple, so stay focused on that. Well, he does more than just a knock. Hits the grand slam to drive in four. Really good job at the plate. Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan. Sunny Gray will depart and as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with a new pitcher after this break. Now pitching. New arm of the mound for the Cardinals. Kyle Ley should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. So two down. Here’s Xander Bogarts. That’s outside and that’s ball one. [Applause] right through there for a strike. [Applause] Next offering is down low. [Applause] And the sweeper misses for a ball in the air left field and makes the play and that’s out number three. But they leave their mark on the inning as we get another look at the grand slam. The lead has exploded to a half dozen. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, number 66. He’s certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season. The numbers are really solid, so they feel great about handing the ball over to him. Back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. Brendan Donovan getting ready to hit Donovan. clearly down in this ball game and you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. Make that guy on the mound work to get you out. [Music] That misses the zone. Now 2 and 0. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 200. He’s put himself in a really good spot. Out of line out towards center. Tatis makes the play and a quick out number one. He was all over that fast ball right there. I tell you what, if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more, that’s way back. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. And first off is fouled off. And that one upstairs. Ball one. St. Louis. Just missed. He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Three and one. [Applause] swing and a pop off in foul ground. Has room and he makes the catch. Going to have to have a little more discipline in future at bats. That pitch looked good, but you can’t hit it. It was just too high in the zone. You usually see a swing and miss or weak contact in the infield. That one ripped but foul. Now a will bullet to second base, but he’s got it to end the inning. Redbirds down quietly, still up against a six nothing deficit. This one isn’t exactly close. Chris, let’s go off script for a moment. Okay. Were we on script? Never. Sing, you grew up in the Bay Area. Did you have a favorite player as a kid? Yeah, I love the A’s lineup. I mean, guys like Ricky Henderson, Dave Kingman, Terry Steinbach. Um, I mean, you just go on and on. Tony Armis. Uh just some tremendous rosters back then. And I loved as a kid getting on the BART train, the Bay Area Rapid Transit, pulling up right there to the stadium and then going in and watching the game. And now one and two. You also had the pleasure of going over and hitting and taking batting practice at a big leaguer’s house. Who was that? Yeah, Willie McGee. One of the greatest of all time in my opinion. Not lived in your neighborhood. Yeah. His folks live right down the street from me and that’s where his batting cage was. I used to look out of my backyard down the hill and just dream of one day maybe being able to go over and hit with him. And that dream became a reality when I was drafted by the San Francisco Giants. Man at first. Next for the Padres’s, Jose Glaciius the other way. And that’s a base hit. And now to a board. Now batting second baseman Jake Croninworth. Here’s the second baseman Jake Croninworth. That one misses. Ball one. 10. Come on. That one lifted to left. Hauls it in for the out. One away. Now batting right fielder Rice Johnson. So digging in now for San Diego, Rice Johnson. and he swings and misses at the initial offer. One’s the count. Runners at first and second with one gone here in the top half of inning number seven. Fast for a strike. Two on, one out. swing and a miss. Struck him out. Just blown away in that at bat. Three fast balls, all strikes. Wasn’t even able to foul one off. There’s not much you can take away from an at bat like that as a hitter other than maybe there’s something wrong with your eyes. Got to have better timing on the fast ball next time. Diaz the next up for the Padres’s. [Music] That one catches the corner for a strike. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. Next off in there for a strike. That is strike two. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. Gets a piece and stays alive. That one 95 to finish him off. Couple of strikeouts with runners on. Sometimes you got to really bear down and he did just that. Nice job of getting out of the jam and out of the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. Wilson Contrarus now up to the plate. Wilson Contrarus. That’s inside. All one. Oh, that two seam fast ball is a great pitch from a right-hander to a right-handed batter. Just really teases the inside part of the plate. Runs in on the hands. And that’s outside. Two balls, no strikes. There’s your strike. 95 of that one. Big and bad right here. He did the team thing. Took until he got a strike. Now he’s got to go to work. Shorten up that swing a little bit. Do whatever it takes to get on base. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Outside low counts full. Three and two. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. [Music] Short hop liner handled it short. Gathers and throws and very nicely done for the out. Now batting third baseman Nolan Aronado. Here’s Nolan Aronado. First offering and it just misses. The Cardinals with a lot of ground to make up here in the bottom of the seventh. Fought off foul. One-1 now. That one hammered center field. This one’s got a chance. And it hits the fence. Now he’ll turn for second and he’ll pull in there with a stand up double. All over that one right there. You hit the ball so well right there and I really thought it was going to carry out of here, but that’s definitely the big part of the yard and you just really have to get a hold of one to drive it out in that part of the ballpark. But you can’t be mad about driving one off the wall. Now it’s the shorts stop. Mason Win delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Right through there for a strike. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. Hit on the ground to short. Alacius slings to first in time. And up next for St. Louis, Jordan Walker. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one inside. And that is ball one. Runner at second. Two down. That to right. Johnson. And that is that. So one left for the Cardinals. They still find themselves down six zip. Back here at Bush Stadium, we go to the eighth. Here’s the center fielder, Fernando Tatis Jr. He’s a guy, Chris, whose highlights include some of the best throws from the outfield that you will ever see. Definitely one of the best arms of the sport. That one at the knees for a strike. Yeah, the infielders and the catcher can never give up on a play because if this guy thinks he has a chance, he’s going to throw it from the warning track if he has to. Next offering is downstairs. I got one ball, one strike. Just missed. You know, these Padres’s, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. We’ve heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one, haven’t we? I mean, they’ve logged six hits at 90 plus exit velocity, and that doesn’t happen by accident. That’s in there. And now it’s three and two. Three and two. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk now. Second walk of the game for him. And he’s been really patient at the play. A game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. Swing and a ball popped in the air and it falls. Lead runner to second. So two on and nobody out. Here’s Manny Machado now. He’s already homerred in this game. Fast ball for a strike. [Applause] That one finds the corner. Oh, two now. Double play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. And the swing and a miss. That pay is his third of the game. And he’ll be beating himself up on the way back to the dugout. Got a pitch to hit and just couldn’t get to it. I think that slider really caught way more of the plate than it was supposed to. Here’s Bogards now. There’s the strike. If I’m at the dish right now, I am aggressive over the heart of the plate. This guy’s been filling up the strike zone. So, you know, you’re going to get a good pitch to hit. And as nasty as his stuff is, you might as well take all three swings. And one, the only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Two on, one out. Swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strike out. Typically that high fast ball, if it’s close to the top of the strike zone, a hitter, if he’s prepared for it, can get to it. But that one just had that little jump at the end which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it and it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s internal clock would expect it to. And that’s why you see the swing and miss little bit low. Great take right there. Showed some really good discipline. Breaking ball coming in. You see it well, but don’t trust that it’s going to hang on for a strike. Nice job. The 1-1 is fouled off. St. Louis St. Louis fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Padres’s leave a pair, but they’re on top by a count of six to nothing. Out of the bottom of the eighth and now the Cardinals catcher, Pedro Pah. Pedro PZ. That one’s in there. 0 and one. 0 and one. Cardinal to third. Handled by Machado slings to first and that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Now batting center fielder Victor Scott the second now up for St. Louis. Victor Scott he is singled and he has flyed to left. And the first pitch misses for ball one. St. Louis. Swung on. Belted. That one’s deep. Gone. [Applause] His second home run of the series. And they’re on the board. It’s 6-1. Well, there goes the shut out. Just like that. They’re still behind, but this is a start. [Applause] That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that. And probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. And here is Brendan Donovan. [Applause] That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Curve ball in the dirt. Diaz onto first gets the out. Two down after the strike out. You hear people talk about letting the ball travel so often in terms of a hitting approach. And that’s a great example why right there. If he’s willing to let that curveball get a little deeper into the zone before he commits, he’s way more likely to recognize that it’s making a beline for the dirt. On the other side, still a nice two- strike pitch though. Two outs. Base is empty. Ivon Herrera will hit next. Out towards left center, Glacius on the move. He’s got it. And that is out number three. One in the inning and it comes from a rather unlikely power source. And this is now a 61 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Phil M. And he has some nasty breaking stuff. [Applause] Jose Eacius. Short stop. Jose Eglacius. [Applause] Hammered down the right side. The foul. [Applause] Foul ball there. [Applause] Knocks that one away and will do it again. [Applause] And it skips in the dirt. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. Next offering upstairs. Two balls, two strikes. [Applause] To the right side, Donovan. And the leadoff man retired here in the ninth. Now batting second base Jake. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. Movement in the bullpen. Jojo Romero, a lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs. [Applause] What a stop. Fires to first and he can’t come up with it. Now that right fielder Rice. Oh, that one right there had the looks of one of those plays of the week. Great diving stop, but he just couldn’t set up to make a good throw. Maybe got a little too excited. He was probably feeling it as well. But either way, that’s a tough play and a tough error. Now, here is Rice Johnson. Struck out on just three pitches last time. And there’s a strike of the outside corner. 0 and one. [Applause] And that’s down and away. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. There’s a 1-1 tap foul at the plate. Croninworth stands at first with one out. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Now batting catcher Elias Diaz the next to hit. [Applause] Ground ball left side. They get the first and that is that. Padres’s leave one. They still lead it though 6-1. Now pitching for back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Jeremiah Estrada. He’s got some of the best swing and miss stuff going right now. He’s striking out hitters at a very high rate this year. So this should be fun to watch. 345 do up for the home team. Here’s the Cardinal D. Alec Burlson. Burlington, [Applause] swings and blasts one deep to left center. And that one hops the wall in safely with a double. His second of the day. Two hits for him in this one. Both for extra bases. Got to feel good about that. Challenged him with a fast ball right in the heart of the zone and he was clearly ready to jump all over it. Here’s Contraras now 0 for three in this one. [Applause] And that’s off the outside edge and it’s one and0. This hitter loves attacking the first pitch. So, not giving him something to hit is a good move. [Applause] Swang and a highf fly ball. Well struck left field. That’s back there. Gone straight into the visitors bullpen. Wilson Contrarus blasts one out. his 13th home run of the season. And they close the gap. It’s 6-3. This crowd back alive. [Applause] A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. [Applause] So now it’s Dolan Aronado. Drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Nobody on, nobody out. a pair of runs across in the inning here. The last half of inning number nine. [Applause] Two balls, one strike. Right through there for a strike. [Music] Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. [Applause] Hit hard to the ground and up the middle. Base hit. Up next for the Cardinals, the shortstop and the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Jeremiah Estrada done for the night. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Here comes the closer here in the ninth, Robert Suarez. And I can’t imagine any save is an easy one. You’re holding a small lead on the scoreboard. And you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats they can. So it’s always high stress. Let’s see what he’s got here to try and close it out. Mason Win next up for the Cardinals. [Applause] late on that fast ball. You tie a guy up like that, you’re feeling like you are in command. [Applause] And a foul ball. He stays alive. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Backed off the plate that time. Straighten him up a little bit. [Applause] There’s a swing and a drive and that one hops the wall. Aronado around third now. A relay to the plate. It’s off the mark and he scores. And it’s now a two-run game. Picks himself up at RBI. Everything is mechanically sound with that swing right there. I mean, that’s pretty much what you’re wanting to replicate with every rep you take. You have good balance barrel directly to the baseball and good long extension after contact out in front of home plate. Man, there are a lot of doubles in a swing like that. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Walker now at the plate. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One and0. Counts. One and0. The tying run at the plate. Fast ball for a strike. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. [Applause] And there’s a ball [Applause] battling ling here as he fouls it away with the tying run at the plate there. The home team trying to pull it out. Got him. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Absolutely dotted the edge of the zone right there. That was a tough battle, man. So to make a really quality pitch and just catch him looking like that, it’s got to feel good out there on the mound. That was a fun at bat to watch. Now Pedro Pahes 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. [Applause] And a first pitch fast is in for a strike. Tying run at the plate. And that’s in there for a strike. quickly nothing at two. Pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Popped up. Two down. Now batting center fielder Victor Scott the second. One out left for the Cardinals and the batter now Victor Scott. He’s already homered here in this one. Well, you got the number nine hole hitter right here looking to do whatever he can to get on base, turn this lineup over. So the best hitters in this lineup have a chance to tie up the ball game or maybe even walk it off. Yeah, he swings and misses and it’s up and one. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. [Applause] Two-run game, but two away here in the bottom of the ninth. A healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98, but a really good pass at the ball. Lift it to left. And this should do it. And that is the ball game. Sometimes it takes just getting away from home. players can sort of come together, connect a little bit more than they do when they’re at home with their families, and that can breed to success on the field as we saw in this game today. Excellent win by this team. And this one ends with a final score of six to four. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show, I’m John Shambi. Thanks for joining us.
