It's tradition not to accept it. Both conferences do this. However, touching the trophy is considered bad luck, and it seems the bad luck rubbed off on them. The only team I've seen touch their respective conference trophy, and go on to win the cup is the 97 Detroit Red Wings. Steve Yzerman actually picked up the Campbell trophy and took it to the locker room. The 97 Red Wings, were one heckuva team though.
