Ravens Leaders Have Re-Established the ‘Breakfast Club’ | Baltimore Ravens Final Drive

When the sun’s still down and most of the Under Armour Performance Center is quiet, a small group of Ravens players are already sweating. It’s called the Breakfast Club Lift, a 6 a.m. workout tradition that dates back to the Eric Wed era. And now, veteran Marlon Humphrey is helping bring it back. Wed, a former allpro safety and vocal leader for the Ravens, once spearheaded the early morning workouts during his time in Baltimore. Back then, young players like Humphrey were just trying to keep up, but now Marlin’s the one setting the tone. The current version of the group features about seven or eight players, including Humphrey, Rashad Baitman, and Z Flowers, who are now rotating in leadership duties. The bar is set high, not just for effort, but punctuality, too. We’re already starting our day at 7 a.m., but I guess, you know, a couple guys, we we want to get going as soon as possible. So, I’m I’m an early morning guy anyway, so it it worked. It was um it kind of has come back from a couple years ago um when I was when I was younger, kind of that that breakfast club lift. So, it’s it’s been good. If you don’t come in there at 6:00 on the dot, 601, you got to go back. you got to wait for the 7:00 group. So, it’s a you better get up early cuz it’s uh we’re we’re looking at the clock waiting on it to be six and to send somebody back. But, um I I love the Breakfast Club lift. That level of discipline, even down to the minute, is part of a bigger picture. This off season, Humphrey has been outspoken about his desire to help bring the Ravens defense back to the elite standard it’s known for. But he’s not just talking about it, he’s leading by example. You know, being on time is just we’re trying to create an environment where everything matters. You know, 601 like does it really matter? No. But does it? Yes. So, it’s kind of just another thing we’re trying to do. Everything matters. Accountability is going to be the key to this season. That mindset has resonated with new faces, too, like Pro Bowl cornerback Jire Alexander, who signed with the Ravens this off season and immediately joined the early morning crew. I’m talking day one. Marlin mentioned it and Jaire was there. Although Alexander’s energy level in the morning, it’s still growing on Marlin. And he wants music blasting. He said, “I need a speaker right here.” I was like, “Yeah, we got them in the ceiling.” He said, “Nah, I need the boom box right by here, right in my ear.” I’m like, “We are not alike in that aspect at 6:00 a.m.” Different personalities, same goal, pushing each other to be great. It’s a culture that Wedle helped build years ago. one rooted in discipline, toughness, and pride in being a raven. Humphrey was once mentored by him, and now he’s keeping that torch lit. That’s it for me today. Thanks for watching, and we’ll see you again tomorrow.

Marlon Humphrey, Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman and Jaire Alexander are part of a 6 a.m. workout crew.
