Salary Cap Breakdown – Phoenix Suns

After another expensive and disappointing season for the Phoenix Suns, changes were inevitable for their salary cap heading into next season. So, starting off with Kevin Durant and what ended up ridiculously being a 17 team trade. The relevant parts for the Suns though were that KD went to the Rockets and in return they got Jaylen Green, Dylan Brooks, Daquin Plouden, who they waved, some future second round picks, and then three picks from this year’s draft. Number 10, which became Kaman Malawatch. number 31, which became Rashir Fleming, and then number 41, which became Kobe Bray, but he’s on a two-way contract. Okay, next, Bradley Beal. So, the Suns ended up utilizing the buyout provision and the wave and stretch provision to deal with his remaining contract, $110 million over the next two seasons. So, first, the buyout. Beal had to give back 13.9 million to facilitate the process, which he agreed to do because he would make most of that back with his Clippers contract. But then the wave and stretch. After the buyout, the remainder of his contract was waved and then stretched over the next 5 years instead of two. The result about 19 million in dead money on the Sun’s books for the next 5 years in a row. So, was it worth it? Well, on the court, it’s debatable. But off the court, and specifically in Matt Ishbia’s pocketbook, waving be gets the Suns out of the luxury tax, which according to Brian Winhorst saves the Suns $175 million in tax payments just next season. So from Ishbia’s perspective, yeah, it was worth it. Anyways, moving on, because the Suns did other stuff this offseason, too. They also traded Vaseli Meeich and two draft picks to the Charlotte Hornets for Mark Williams. Then they also gave a contract to Colin Gillespie, Jordan Goodwin, Jared Butler, and Nigel Hayes Davis, who hasn’t played in the NBA in 7 years, but he’s the reigning Euro League Finals MVP. Finally, Devin Booker also signed an extension for two additional years in 2029 and 2030, at which point he’ll be earning $69 million. So, after all that, the Suns should be saving a lot of money in luxury tax with a somewhat patchwork roster around Devin Booker. Their big three era with Durant, Beiel, and Booker is now officially a relic of Sun’s history.

Here’s what the Phoenix Suns did this offseason, and how it affects their salary cap next season.

  1. Been waiting for this one. Since the new CBA I'm lost on this stuff. The dead money sucks but just getting rid of Beal is worth it. Good luck Clippers that man does not care about playing ball. Never seen someone so content with sitting out.
