And uh, we’re going to be doing a nice kind of 15 to 20 minutes as the San Jose Sharks have traded prospect Daniel Guushian to the Colorado Avalanche uh, for Oscar Olison. So, we’re going to get into the why of it first and and kind of uh, what this means for the Sharks, why they made this move. Um, and then we’ll get to know Oscar Olison a little bit more. So before we get to all that, do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by Monarch Money. Okay? Take control of your finances with Monarch Money. Uh, and yes, this isn’t as big as that, but like Mike Greer signings on Friday afternoons. Like, uh, Mike, can we like enjoy the weekend, buddy? Like, this could have waited till Monday. Um, anyway, but so the San Jose Sharks trade for Daniel Gushin to the Colorado Avalanche for Ford Oscar Olison. Um, Guushian’s departure kind of marks the end of the 2020 draft class. much heralded uh myself very much included in that and kind of thinking that 2020 draft class was going to be the first um kind of start of a new era in San Jose Sharks hockey. Spoiler, we were all wrong as now everybody uh well Timothy Spitzer is still technically the Sharks own his rights until August 15th. Um he’s not getting signed. Spitzer has not done anything to warrant getting signed by the San Jose Sharks. So, um, the 2020 draft class will officially be done with players that the Sharks drafted. Uh, of course, we still have Ascrov and Muka Madullan, both products of that 2020 draft class, but um, from players who were actually selected in the 2020 draft class by, uh, Doug Wilson and Doug Wilson Jr., this, uh, including and then the Thomas Borlo trade recently as well, uh, kind of ends ends this 2020 draft class. So, um, why did the Sharks make this move? Uh, pretty clear. You had to, uh, get Ryan Reeves number 75 ready for for him, right? Uh, we saw the Sharks do this with Kenhov, uh, trading getting rid of him. Um, so that way they could bring uh, Mac on Cellabrini. And of course, Ryan Reeves wears number 75. Had to clear that out. Um, so that way he can wear 75 without any issues. That was a joke. Um, no. The big thing I think for for why the Sharks actually did this is because Gushin clearly was no longer part of the Sharks plans and the organation organization and clearly showed what they thought about him, right? Um, made the team last year from training camp. Uh, was on the Sharks and wasn’t able to really kind of establish himself as a full-time NHLer in that time. um Guushian who performed very well last year in the AHL, right? Um 30 goal scorers like he he was a a huge part of the success of the San Jose Barracuda, but you constantly saw other players get called up and Guian continued to toil down in the AHL and uh just never got that opportunity, right? And with a guy like Daniel Guushian who’s 5 foot eight, if you’re not scoring in the NHL, what else can he do for me? And the question really was the answer to that was not much, right? He’s not going to play on the power play. He’s not or not, sorry, he’s not going to play on the penalty kill. He’s not going to like, you know, not really a a third liner type of player. Definitely not a fourthline type of player, right? Needed to play with other skilled players. and the Sharks felt like, you know, we have other if we’re going to give top six minutes to a young player. Uh we want to to be Will Smith and Celibbrini and Eklund and ex some of these other guys who we feel like are going to be longer term pieces to our future, right? And for Guushian, a guy who, you know, um, going to be on getting ready to enter his third contract now as, you know, after ZLC, signed a one-year deal last year with the with the Sharks. Um, and then is now, uh, a player who’s, you know, you’re starting to kind of get to that AHL veteran status with him. um as he’s uh you know just like you’re kind of a guy who’s right like as as crazy as it sounds he’s played you know a bajillion games in the AHL right now 150 games in the AHL um and he’s going to be an AHL veteran and the the Sharks Barracuda you know you have to that’s unfortunate rules of the AHL where you know you can only have x amount of veterans and x amount of guys who’ve played so many games and such And just for a guy like Daniel Gusheen, um it kind of felt like easily was the odd man out, especially after the moves that the San Jose Sharks have made this season, right? Um bringing in a guy like Jeff Skinner. We know Michael Misa is going to be competing for a a roster spot as well. Um you know, Godet and Kurishv, both two guys who are going to be, you know, um you know, middle six forwards as well. And then you think about with the Barracuda, right? Um, you have Shereshoff, you have Musty, you have Casper Holton and most likely Cam 1. Um, four guys right there who are all players much higher draft pedigree. Um, and players who you kind of invested in, Mike has personally invested in these guys to be big parts of your Sharks and lineup. So, you know, unfortunately, it just kind of felt like the time was over for Daniel Guushian. And, you know, I I a couple weeks ago, I said I would be surprised if Guushian’s even on the roster by training camp. And here we are, right? And as as the Sharks have clearly um felt like he just wasn’t a long-term fit for them, unfortunately. So, um, you know, it’s it’s kind of sad cuz I Guushian was, you know, a player who I really really liked and, uh, thought that he could be a a potential, you know, kind of middle six or second line forward for the Sharks. Um, a guy who we we’ve seen be able to score um, very, you know, in the AHL at a very good rate, but just never quite clicked for him in the NHL. And again, right, when you’re 5’8 and if you’re not scoring, what else can you do for me? And unfortunately, it feels like uh for the Sharks, you know, this is definitely a a trade of let’s swap our kind of problem child uh and see or maybe are guys who, you know, uh in Guushian’s case, a guy who’s, you know, doesn’t really have a future here. In Oscar Olison’s case, a guy who just never has kind of lived up to his potential. Um, and let’s see if we can kind of swap them and see what happens here. So, I I do fully expect like I still think it’s hard for it’s now it’s it’s probably a much harder path for Guushian to crack into the NHL on a much better Avalanche team, but you know, I I fully expect Gushian to have a really nice season over in Colorado. And, uh, that Eagles team is probably still going to be very good and he’s probably going to still score a bajillion goals over there. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets some revenge on on the Barracuda at some point this season. So, um, as for Oscar Olison, right, a guy who’s um on the last year of his entry level contract um still like he’s a guy where you can um you know, just kind of provides the barracuda a little bit more flexibility. Um not waiverss exempt anymore. um which is a bit interesting, but still uh a a player for the for the Barracuda who will be able to provide them just a little bit of flexibility, especially when it comes to kind of their AHL veteranship uh and such. So, uh we’re going to break down Olison and what the Sharks are getting from him uh here in just one minute. Ever wish manage your money felt easier? With Monarch Money, it can be. So, uh, Olison, former first round pick of the 2021 draft, 28th overall, was, uh, picked by the Colorado Avalanche. um coming over from Sweden, played for HV71 uh team over there. He played uh about 16 games in the SHL um in his draft year where he scored uh he had three goals and an assist for four points. Also played in the hockey fence in that that season as well. Uh played on the J20 team. Kind of bounced around as well. Also played on the World Junior team if I recall that year. That was also the same season as Ecklund and if I recall that World Juniors got shut down. Uh but anyway, um 21-22 season transferred over to the OHL where he played with the Barry Colts. Uh so he’s actually knows Ethan Cardwell. They played together. Um he also played with the Ashawa Generals um that season. um in 55 games had 49 points including uh a very solid production of of um 26 goals in that time. Um then he’s been kind of bas basically playing in the AHL since. He’s got a handful of NHL games about four uh in that time, but mostly has been an AHL guy for for uh in the Colorado organization. And again, right, Colorado is pretty stacked with their forward group and I know they’ve dealt with some injuries um over the past couple seasons, but like that is a a very tough group to crack, right? So, um, Olison this year, maybe not the most productive, uh, season for him. Uh, 61 games. He had 11 goals, 15 assists with 105 shots on goal. Um, he also popped, uh, three assists for the the Eagles um, in the playoffs this year as well um, in seven playoff games for them. Um I think he had if I recall correctly I think he’s scored some points against the bar in the Barracuda series as well. So um a guy who you know was has definitely seen his stock fallen over the past couple seasons. uh advanced hockey stats uh from JFresh. He basically right now his chance to be an full-time NHLer. Uh that’s a 200 games with a positive war is at 3% his chance to become a star. That’s a top 18 and a half% war uh per 82 games. Um 0% like this guy is basically at that like fringe AHL NHL type of level player um going forward. um looking at hockey prospecting uh Byron Bader’s model um you know his you see the same thing of a guy who’s just really you know when in his draft year he was a 53% chance player to make the NHL with a 24% chance to be a star and has just kind of seen those numbers fall off the cliff over the last couple seasons. Um, looking back at at his elite prospects draft profile, um, they graded him very well. They had him in the 14th ranked player in that draft, right? Um, and you look at that draft, right, with guys like Ekkund and and Brent Clark and, you know, all the other players in that draft. Um, they grade him very well in his skating at 6.5, 5.5 shooting, 5.5 passing. These are all out of one to nine scale. six and a half puck handling, five and a half uh hockey sense and a six physical with an A grade. Like he is a, you know, a guy who’s had legitimate talent. And even going back to, you know, looking at kind of his his profile from uh elite prospects, the name of the game for Oscar Olison is pure skill. He leveraged it across three different levels of competition in Sweden last year and did some serious offensive damage, too. Allison’s work in the SHL is particularly impressive. He only collected four points in his 16 games with the HV71 men’s team, but the number is so much more impressive than it seems when it’s placed in the appropriate context. It’s the eighth most points by 199 skater in the SHL is tied for the fifth most points per game rate in that same group. Um, basically you talk about with Olison is his blistering speed. HV71 product is so is one of the best drafts most mechanically refined skaters uh owing to perfect posture and great depth with each stride. He’s absolute menace with the puck in space. It’s not just a skating ability, it’s a form from uh David St. Louis. Um so like the skating for Olison is is been a massive, you know, is is one of his calling cards, right? Just how good of a skater he is. Um, you know, he they talks they talk about uh Olison rarely attempted the same neutral zone rush twice in the same game. He’ll cross the D line, change lads, speeds, work well time weight shifts as a puck carrier to get past the defender opposite him. Um, it isn’t to say all Olsen is without warts as a puck carrier is distinctly positive quality of his game. Could use some little polishing. He the way he kind of carries the puck, leaves it open for uh exposures and stuff. But everyone at Olison’s tools projects to be comfortable above average NHL player. It sets an unusually high floor for a player at this point in the draft. Olison has the potential to take those individual skills and build them into a top six scoring winger at the NHL level. At the very least, he’s comfortably projects a team’s middle six player. Okay. So, um for the Sharks, right, you’re taking a swing on a player who does have like legitimate skill, right? Um, this isn’t like Bordello for Shane Bowers or I’m not trying to knock Shane Bowers, but like Olison like there was a reason why he was projected to be a a top, you know, a first round pick and and to be like why he was thought of so positively. Um, and you’re again kind of resetting the clock a little bit here is, you know, he has one more year on his ELC and you have like you kind of you’re just starting the RFA game with him where you can kind of control his rights and we know the middle six of the Sharks like it feels like there’s going to be opportunities for guys to win jobs here and I don’t expect Olison to win an NHL job outright this But maybe you get them in here, right? We’ve seen some of the work that the Sharks uh development staff has done over the past couple seasons with some of their prospects. Um you have a right 6’2 180lb frame. You you know, we know Mike Greer likes those big boys, maybe needs to add a little bit more weight or whatever, but like you have you’re you’re kind of just resetting that clock and taking a swing on a guy who does have legitimate skill. Does it work? Maybe, maybe not. But at the very least though, um I think you’re getting you’re adding another piece for the Barracuda and you’re kind of clearing the deck for some of these younger players like Musty and Shernes and Haltonin, you know, and Camelan and whomever else to kind of be able to step into a bigger role without having to kind of clog it down right there. And you know, if Olivesson maybe is playing on your top line with a guy like Musty or a guy like Lond or a guy like, you know, whomever, right? Um it’s right now I think, you know, kind of provides another quotequote veteran type of player as Olison has played, you know, a ton of AHL games at this point, right? Uh he’s played what I’m trying to pull. He’s played 163 AHL games. So he actually has played just as much as um as sorry, as Daniel Guushian, but you’re again, right, you’re trying to kind of clear the deck for some of your younger players here. And I think Olison provides you a little bit more flexibility compared to a guy like Daniel Gushian, right? Where if Guushian’s not scoring, what else can he do for you? And I think Olison may be a little bit more well-rounded with his game. I’m not saying Olsson is as good as Daniel Guushian, right? And the production easily shows, right, as Guushian um has been a top scorer, you know, for the Barracuda. I think he leaves the Barracuda as their all-time t top scorer if I think uh Curtis Bashelka tweeted that out later. But um again, right, you’re you’re trying to set your younger players up to be able to come in and have a big impact right away. So, um that’s going to be it for me today. Again, I I I think long term though, um Olison probably gets a handful of NHL games here at some point this year due to injuries or whatever and maybe goes on a hot streak with the Barracuda, but um this is, you know, it’s let’s call it what it is. It’s an AHL trade. It’s a one for one AHL trade and uh maybe Olison can kind of refine his spark uh with the Barracuda here. So, uh but yeah, that’s going to be it for me today. Uh we’ll be back on Sunday night, Monday, as we’ll probably be talking Will Smith. Uh so make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. Follow the show on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram at lockdown Sharks. Follow me on Twitter and Blue Sky Fryhole. Uh until Sunday night, Monday. Bye friends.

The San Jose Sharks shake up their roster, trading Danil Gushchin to the Colorado Avalanche for Oskar Olausson. This move marks the end of the Sharks’ 2020 draft class and signals a shift in the team’s long-term strategy.

JD Young, host of Locked On Sharks, breaks down the trade’s implications for both teams. He analyzes Gushchin’s AHL success and NHL struggles, exploring why the 5’8″ forward became expendable. Young then turns his attention to Olausson, a former first-round pick whose stock has fallen in recent years.

Young discusses how this trade impacts the San Jose Barracuda and creates opportunities for younger prospects like Quentin Musty and Igor Chernyshov. He also examines the Sharks’ development strategy and their willingness to take risks on skilled players.
