Offensive Coordinator Nick Caley Texans Media Availability | Full July 25 Q&A

eye on me there. How’s it going? Good. Yeah, I mean more time with the guys um in its simplest form and then obviously once we get through this acclamation period, get the pads on, really get to see the physicality, get to see the pads come to life and you know affect the run game, play action, stuff like that. How you seen CJ? Yeah, he’s doing a good job. I mean, you know, enjoy being around him every single day, growing every day. So, it’s been a lot of fun. What was the first thing you said? I’m sorry. I couldn’t I don’t know if it was more by design or if the weather was part of it to be honest with you. I think it was more weather related than anything else. Everyone describes you as very energetic on the sidelines. What are you trying to bring to the players when it comes to energy? I’m just trying to bring the best that I can do for them every single day and naturally probably a high energy guy I guess. So, you know, just trying to be myself and and pour into the guys, you know, to really assess things without going, but also we only had 20 practices with these guys before that message those guys, but also assess. Well, I mean, I think you know there’s a lot of things you do. There’s discipline. There’s mental toughness in terms of being precise with motions, being precise in breaking the huddle with a clean operation, whether it’s cadence changing up cadences, whether it’s putting guys in different spots that, you know, mixing some different formations that they may have to, you know, sit run the same concept for multiple formations. So, it’s a mentally too uh not just physically. Do you plan to have your lin the I think it’ll it’ll manifest itself to be honest with you. I think it’ll naturally happen. There’s a progression. We got really good competition right now. So, I think we’re just trying to give as many reps and again, you know, once we get the pads on, I think that’s the truest measure of the evaluation part of it. But I’ve been really pleased. I know we’ve been really pleased with with where they’ve grown and and we’ve got a really good group of guys that are hungry to learn. beneficial to have different manage different. Yeah. Well, I think I mean again it go it started in the spring, you know, exposing them to maybe something that may have been different, may not have been different, and then obviously through through camp here. But I mean it’s it’s you know it’s a full evaluation from a a spring to fall um setting and and I think you just you do you put them in as many situations you can and then you start to refine some things or you start to feel with you know once we start getting the pads on once we have some practices you know with the pads on you get into joint practices you get into the preseason games I think things start to declare a little bit more and and then you tweak things as you go. Did you know Cole? Yep. Talk about him as a coach and why you wanted to keep him going. Yeah, because I have a lot of respect. I think he’s a phenomenal coach. Um he’s really smart. He’s an extremely hard worker. He really cares about the guys. Um he is a mentally and physically tough dude. I mean, look at him. He looks like he could squat a house. Uh um for sure, but he uh got a lot of experience with him. um been through a lot of you know uh games with him in the past dating back to New England and um he’s always growing. I mean he’s he’s really always searching to be the best that he can be. He’s got a growth mindset and um I’m really thankful that we get to work together again. There a few guys who said this is kind of similar to the New England system that was here in 2019. What is it like taking these things and kind of openminded changes around players while having that system? Yeah, I mean we’re all a byproduct of our experiences, right? So, um, this is not a New England system and it’s it’s our system and it’s going to evolve and, you know, that’s personnel driven, but it’s finding out what we can do. But also, I think from starting with the players and things that they’ve had success with, things that they’ve done well here, they’ve done a lot of things well here. We have a great coaching staff that all have different experiences. I’m really blessed to be around those guys and uh, we’re just trying to formulate what’s best for us as we get get going here. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I love Aziz. Um, talk about an ultimate competitor, a guy that pours everything he has into it. Uh, I remember going to Hillsboro High School in Tampa and watching him and and calling our defensive coordinator, Rock Bellon, and saying, “You got to come see this guy.” Um, he had a fire about him. Um, he played and gave you everything he had. He’s a great human being. He’s a great person. I love Aziz and, uh, it’s kind of it’s just faith that we’re back here and I’m I’m really excited to be a part of the team with him. What’s it like moving in not just as Yeah. Well, uh, you know, it’s it’s fun. Uh, to put it simply, they’re pros. Um, our veterans such as CK lead by example. They’re pros. They work. And those young guys have come in and, you know, you got to kick them out of the building. You know, uh, they’re they’re great human beings. They’ve got great pedigree. They got they’re made of good fabric and um no it’s it’s a lot of fun. He just keeps improving, you know, and uh that’s a testament to him and he he cares and he’s working really hard at it. We all know how talented your surprised about this team. Uh I don’t know that anything surprised me because I I don’t think I’ve tried to come into this with any set expectations. I think that kind of sets you up for, you know, uh, things that you’re, you know, I don’t think I don’t try to go into it with expectations. We got a group of guys starting with Demo and Nick on down the leadership on the team that are hardworking guys. And I know this like whatever level of football it is, when you’re hard when your best players are your hardest workers, it kind of sets the tone for everybody else. and and we’ve got really really good people here that work hard that love football and uh we’re just trying to keep it moving in the right direction. Thank you guys. Yeah. Have a great day. We’re gonna do

  1. Patience. Rome wasn't built in a single day, as they say. Guys are getting the fundamentals and timing down. Brick by brick.

Quick game seems to be good, now to establish the run game. In other interviews, the OL is working on double-teaming our edge rushers.
