Coach Mike Tomlin Press Conference (July 25) | Pittsburgh Steelers
Good afternoon. Uh unfortunately we got cut short today. Really wanted to work to get the group back out on the field if at all possible. Um but Doppler hadn’t moved enough. And the reason why is often times in football we’re faced with adversity. You know, sudden changes if you will, particularly as it pertains to weather. We had a big delay uh last year uh when we played the Cowboys for example. And so we don’t run from days like today. uh we just worked to try to deal with it uh to the best of our ability and get as much work done as we can uh while keeping the group safe. Uh but we didn’t deem it safe enough uh based on the Doppler information to get back out today. And so not a lot to talk about. I thought practice was off to a really good start. Um infusing some more components of of competition. Uh worked on the short field to kind of get ourselves started. Um but we got cut we got cut short. Um had a new acquisition. I don’t know if you guys got a chance to see him. I don’t know if we got a chance to get him in any action, but Chuck Clark uh was out there with us and obviously he’s a veteran player. Uh a guy that’s experienced in the NFL, a guy that we’re familiar with from from competing against them and so excited about getting him in the fold and giving him an opportunity. Um no new news on the injury front. Um the guys that I talked about yesterday that I could describe as day-to-day um appear to be very much in the same place and um maybe we’ll get a guy or two back tomorrow hopeful there and I don’t think we absorbed any negativity on the short work uh that we did today. I’ll pause and open up for questions. Coach, specifically with Chuck Clark, what are some things attributes of him that attracted you guys to want to sign him? I’m just highly familiar with his intangibles. Um he’s got a really good relationship with the game. He’s a hard worker. Um he’s a really good communicator. um his football character comes highly recommended. Mike, when uh an available player formerly played for the Ravens, is that a plus in your mind? You know, I just view players as familiar or unfamiliar. I don’t I care less about, you know, who they played for. Um because he played for the RA Ravens, I’m familiar with him. And I think that’s probably the thing that, you know, captures my attention more than anything, the familiarity component less so about who he played for. There was just so much of that in today’s game that I think it’s, you know, less of a a story or an issue. You view him as someone who can still play in the post and do you feel like he needed somebody else there? That’s why we’re here. Um, that’s something to be determined in terms of his skill set. Uh, he’ll be given an opportunity to prove it. What did you want to see from Roderick Jones coming into this camp, particularly with him moving to left? You know, I expect him to do what we drafted him to do. Um, you know, he was a left tackle prospect, man, a highly regarded one when he came out. Um, you know, he was a young guy when he came out. So, he’s had some on the job training and gained some experience. In the meanwhile, I think it’s a big year for him, one that we can expect him uh to play and play varsity ball is is a term that we like to to use. Mike, around the draft, you talked about retooling physicality in all areas. How does Ramsay fit into that vision? We’re here to find out. Um, you know, I certainly familiar with his reputation, as are you. That’s why you asked the question. Um, but those those things are earned. No stripes are earned in settings like this. Mike Calvin was a guy as a rookie that obviously didn’t play and then has cemented himself. Roman Wilson, Troy Falon, who are guys trying to do that this year. What is it from your guys’ perspective that you try to instill in those guys while they’re, you know, sitting out in unfortunate circumstance, you know, the start doesn’t define the career. There’s been so many examples of it. You mentioned Calvin, but I also think about David Dcastro, uh, for example, and there’s a lot of examples, man. Um, you know, injuries are a part of the game. Sometimes it derail the beginning of someone’s career, but if they’re professionally professional and mentally tough, um it just becomes a memory um or an experience that they can grow from. And so it it requires no significant, you know, talk or conversation. There just so many examples of it because this is it’s a part of our game. Your reaction to the uh Rogers to Metaf quick out for the scoring seven shots. That’s what I anticipate. you know, um, you know, I’m not going to throw a pep rally. Um, that’s what I expect. That’s what I envisioned all summer. How’ you like how the offense responded after that first play? You kind of scrapped. It’s going to be eb and flow. I don’t ride the emotional roller coaster on day two. And no, we’re going to keep snapping it. Is it a concerted effort to flop TJ and Alex as much as you did today defensively? You know, we that’s just part of team development, you know. Um, I don’t think it’s a big deal to be quite honest with you. Um, make them work on both sides, give them an opportunity to work against other people. Um, it’s just football this time of year. Mike, you had a couple quarterback center exchange problems last couple of days. Is that just early in camp and not too much worried about it? You said it.
