🔴LIVE 🔴Oakland Athletics VS Houston Astros / July 25/Baseball Envivo/MLB the show 25
an AL West matchup on the show. It’s the Athletics taking on the Houston Astros. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. Welcome Houston Astros. So, just about set our starter in this one, Jason Alexander. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. And out number one on the grab and time now to check out the A’s lineup. This is not a team that’s had much success driving the baseball so far this year. They have to rely on stringing hits together as opposed to scoring a lot of runs on homers, doubles, and triples. So, it’s hard to bunch runs together and that’s exhausting when your team is at the bottom of the league in slugging percentage and how much it takes, Boo, for you to put together a rally and put together a big inning. Just a difficult uh thing to do consistently over a long season. So, somehow someway somebody’s going to have to find some power in this lineup so that they can have some easier wins and enjoy this season a little bit more. One out, base is empty. and he hits a ground ball right side and they get the out. Third, their designated hitter, Brent Rooker. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level and he can’t come up with it. Gets off a throw. They don’t come much closer than that. Bang bang play to end the inning. And the A’s are gone in order. And now the Astros go to work for the first time. No score. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. And on the hill in this one, Luis Severino. What do you have on him, Sigy? Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. We go to the bottom of the first. Here’s Taylor Trel. There’s the swing and a miss. Next offering is in for a strike. on the ground right side. Boots it still fires to first and the throw is late. Missed opportunity there thanks to the misplay. Pretty much gifted a leadoff base runner right there. And as an offense, this is where you really want to take advantage. Apply some pressure this inning. Make that error hurt. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altuve. I’m liking what I’ve seen from him at the dish lately. Hitting better than 350 this month. Fast ball in for a strike. 0 and one. When you’re taking your lead over there at first, you got to be very careful. This guy on the mountain’s got a good pickoff move. Let’s go. That one misses and it’s one and one. Here comes the pitch. There goes the runner from first and a count. One and two. In there. Got him. Looking for the K. That was pretty nasty. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. Really locked him up and it’s a hitter. It’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in. So, you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. Hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. Vic Keratini at the plate. Strike one. Trel at first one gone. Let’s keep it going. That misses and now it’s even. One and one. Swings through that one. Filthy change up right there. Just pulled the string. strike three and that’s two in a row. Good late cut for the strike out there. That thing really got in on him. And you know, the cutter isn’t really a huge swinging miss pitch most of the time because it’s not really meant to move a whole lot. You’re just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact, but that one right there did a whole lot more than that. That was a really good pitch. And now it’s Christian Walker. He’s been on fire at the dish lately. Batting over 300 so far this month. Now this one stroke to right center. And that should be extra bases. Coming home. He’ll score. Oh, he botches it. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And now the right fielder Cam Smith late on that fast ball. Two down in for a strike. 0 and two. All you got to do is concentrate and execute this next pitch. Get yourself out of the jam back into the dugout. Man at second. Pitch misses and that’s ball two. Two outs and one in scoring position. Battling here as he fouls it away. That misses the zone and that’s ball three. John Singleton up next for the Astros. He swings and drives one out to deep left field. That’s back there. And that is that. But a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. All set for the start of the unit. And now Tyler Sodro. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. Soderstrom in his second season batting in the cleanup spot. a former first round pick in 2020. Just missed next offering is in for a strike. Carl Dixon doing the umpiring behind the plate. And Boo, I’m not sure if it’s because he sort of sets up higher than most, but one thing to be aware of with Dixon is the high strike. Not usually a big deal because most players are swinging at pitches up there. But we may see some surprise looks from hitters from time to time because that’s just so unusual. That one off the mark. Ball two. Really good take especially with two strikes. Stays alive. Next offering is outside. And there’s ball four. And that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Shay Langalers. He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one. That one missed. Way to lay off that pitch down. Ground ball right side. Could be two. Flips it for one. Back to first. And that is a double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Lawrence Butler will hit next. Hard on the ground to first. The flip to the pitcher covering and that is the inning. Nothing doing for the offense that time. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Astros one and the A’s nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here is John Singleton. Sean Singleton. Severino back to work. Just missed. Right through there for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Fly ball down the line. This has got a chance. And it is foul. Well, that ball is hit pretty hard and sure had home run distance, but if you’re the pitcher out there on the mound, you execute it. Just a long strike. You go after him and finish him off. And there’s a ball. Two balls, two hit on the ground to the right side and that one finds its way through. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Seventh designated hitter, Mauricio. Here’s Mauricio Dubon. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. and the first pitch misses for ball one. Singleton gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Runner takes off and that is out of play. line to left and foul ball. This guy at the dish excels in two strike counts. Got to be careful with him out there on the mound. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Nobody out. Runner at first. line drive. Butler makes the grab. One down. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. And stepping in for the Astros, Bryce Matthews. Good power, not great in the OBP department. That one finds the zone. Go and one. Good looking fast ball right there. Surprised he didn’t take a rip at that. I think he got locked up a little bit. Man at first. One away. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. Throw into third and the throw’s offline. Safe at third. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Two on, one out. Now it’s Zack Short. Let’s keep it going. just missed. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Runners are at the corners. One away. Fought off. Foul. Pitch misses there and it’s two and one. Runner on the go. Ripped into right field. Base hit in to score is the runner from third. It’s an RBI single. It’s two nothing. Love how he let that ball travel. Trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Back to the top of the lineup. Taylor Treml up next for the Astros. He’s 0 for one and a foul ball. Traffic on the bases with one already in bottom half of inning number two. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. That’s back. Pulls it in on the warning track. Runner tags for home. He’ll score in the sack fly. It’s three zip. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. Jose Altuve up to hit here. First pitch misses. in the air left field down the line and it stays fair. Coming home. There’s the tag. They get him and that’s the inning. So, two runs on four hits, no errors, and one left on base. We play two full. It’s the Astros three and the A’s nothing. Back here in Houston, new inning getting started now. It’s the right fielder Carlos Cortez and that misses off the outside edge. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. And another ball in there at the knees for a strike. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. That one the other way and it stays fair. around first and hustling for second and they hold him at second. Maybe this is going to be the moment they start the comeback. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. Gorella steps in to third. Walkerella is out. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Luis. Here’s Luis Oras. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. And that one fouled off. A defensive swing right there. Some cheese on the inside part of the plate. Bet the hands are still stinging after that one. And a swinging to miss. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there and have a real quick inning. Get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. And at second, that one back up the middle and it gets through. Headed for the plate now. A long throw home. It’s offline. The run comes in and it’s now a two-run game. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. So, the batting order turns over and now Max Schuman 0 for one with a fly out to center. Just missed. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. And a big swing and a miss. Urias over at first with one away. On the ground. Nice stop. Throws from his knees. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. Just a beautiful play right there to get it out. He dives to make the stop. Then a nice feed from his knees. Knew he didn’t have time to get up and make that throw. The throw beats the runner. That’s that internal clock working. And now here is Nick Curts. Rolled out to second in his first at bat. Strike on the outside. It’s 0 and one. This one ripped but foul to the right. Next offering misses down and away. One ball, two strikes. The next offering misses. Two balls, two strikes. way inside. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. And here it comes. Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. So now two on and two outs. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. Now the A’s designated hitter, Brent Rooker. His split numbers between June and July there. And that one fouled off. Two on, two outs. That’s a base hit. Runner around third. Here comes the throw. It’s offline and he scores. And now they trail by one. Gets it done in a big spot to get the run across. Just a solid swing right there. Caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. So up next, Tyler Soderstrom walked his first time. There’s the strike. First and second, two down. Next offering is in for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Checks his swing. Now it’ll appeal to third. No, he held up. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. Bottom of the inning at the plate is the Astros catcher, Victor Keratini. Well, both sides equally as strong. So, not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. First pitch and he just misses. activity in the bullpen. Elvis Alvarado getting loose out there. Lopez, a left-hander also throwing. Just missed. Oh, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. Swing and a miss and a count. Two and one. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Smoked on the ground to second. Over to first. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Now batting third baseman Christian Walker. Now the third baseman Christian Walker doubled his first time up. Just off the inside edge. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Now batting number 11. And now the right fielder Cam Smith flyed to left his first time. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Let’s go Astro. Come on. Outside low and that’s ball one. The one-1 is fouled off. Walker leads off first with one away. Fouls it off. Still one and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And now two and two. He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Spoils the two strike pitch. And he’ll see another Swing it a bouncer towards third and it goes just foul in the air right side. Cortez sizing this one up and it’s caught for the out. Up next for the Astros, first base. Next to hit, John Singleton. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. Late swing, fouled to the left. Might want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good VO. Two outs. Just missed. Right side. Hard hit. Get there. Throws to first and that is that. One left for Houston, but they still lead it 3-2. Now, welcome back. And now on the mound to start the fourth, Brian Abrau. Well, you see the RA very solid. And that doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. Langers. Well, one-run game. And here’s the catcher, Shay Langalers. Had a breaking ball. Misses outside. Swinging a miss and it’s one and one. Wow, good luck catching up to that one. Fouled off down the right side. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Well, this is no secret that slider is going to be his go-to pitch. Everyone in the ballpark knows it. It’s a massive part of his arsenal. And he’ll throw it a lot. And in pretty much any count, any situation, and he’s going to look to punch guys out as well. I tell you what, the effectiveness of that slider is always a big key for him. Here’s the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. He’s 0 for one and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Here we go. Here we go. Action in the pen down there. Bennett Susa up and throwing. King getting loose as well. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Strike three. Got him. Looking on the change up. So, two down now. And here is Carlos Cortez. Slider misses outside. And another ball backto-back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So I think the confidence level is raised right here. Good hitters count the 20. That’s down and in. Gio Urella in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact. splits the plate and the count is three and one and strike two. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. swings and misses and he strikes out the side here in the fourth. So they make short work of him there. On now to the bottom of the fourth, it’s the Astros three and the A’s two. Welcome back. And they turn to a new arm as we kick off the bottom of the fourth. Elvis Alvarado just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. So now here’s the DH. Mauricio Dubon 0 for one so far. Dub the pitch and first offering is fouled off. That’s out. This one in the air. Curts makes the catch and there’s one gone. Now batting second base. So, next up for Houston, Bryce Matthews. One for one with a single so far. And that’s through there for a strike. Let’s go, Houston. Right side. And that one handled in plenty of time to first. had a couple of quick outs. Now batting the short stop, Zack. Zack Short digs in now. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. And a strike on the outside edge. Do it after. Next one just misses. Now one and two. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. spoils that one and it remains two and two. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Hard hit right side go to first in time and the Astros put down in order. Astros are down quietly, but they’re up three to2. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Bennett Susa. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Urchella in the box now as he looks at ball one. Second played appearance of the day for him. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 200. He’s put himself in a really good spot. There’s the strike. swinging a foul out of play. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Looking to get the tying run on base. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Here’s a 2-2. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Swing at a highf fly ball. That’s out to center. Puts it away for the out. Up next, the second. Next up for the A’s, Luis Urias. RBI single his last time up. That one in there across the letters and downstairs. That one drifts inside. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So the one out hit turns the lineup over. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. Right on time, good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. Back to the top of the order now. Now here is Max Schuman for two in this one. That clips the zone. That’s strike one. Ground ball could be two. There’s one return throw to first. Got him. Double play and that’ll do it. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. Home half of the fifth. Coming up, it’s the Astros three and the A’s two. Now pitching for the back now to start the bottom of the fifth. And taking over on the mound, Ben Bowden. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Well, one-run game and now the center fielder Taylor Trill. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. And what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate to try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. There’s the strike. Bowden measures 6 feet 4 in. He features a fourseam fastball, a splitter, a slider, and he works in a two seamer. He swings and fouls one off. Next pitch way upstairs. swings and misses. And there’s one down. First strike out for him in this one. And that splitter is maybe the go-to pitch when he’s looking for a swing and miss like that. He throws it quite a bit. And that’s a good example of the effect it can have on a hitter. Astro. Altuve. The next to hit takes outside. Houston. There’s the strike of the knees and a count even one and one. Rip towards third. Urchella to first in time. Home man for the fifth inning. Moving along. Two quick outs. Victor Keratini. Two outs. Base is empty. And now the switching catcher. Victor Keratini. In there at the knees. That’s strike one. Two out. Space is empty. That one fouled off. Look out. That ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the line. Just ensure safety for the fans. Last thing is a player you a swing and a miss that retires the side and that’ll do it. Astros go down one, two, three, and it remains a 3-2 ball game. We’re back. And on the mound is the closer, Josh her. Now, this is an extremely confident pitcher. He loves the pressure. Actually likes the oneun game better than a comfortable threerun save opportunity because that’s when he pitches his best. And now the first baseman Nick Curts outside and that is ball one. And that drops in for a strike. Pretty rare location right there. Right down the middle. This guy paints the edges. I’m not sure if you’re going to see that pitch again as a hitter. And now two and one. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. And the two-1 hammered but foul. caught him looking for the K. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. A lot of times you’re looking for a guy to get that tying run on base, but because of the power, you want him to tie up the game with one swing here. missed with a change up. One and0 and another ball. You get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there are some base hits. So, very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you if you will. That one missed. I almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be challenged. Tyler Soderstrom in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Three 0 down. That one is absolutely belted and it’s off the out of town scoreboard. That’s backto-back singles for him. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension and he met it out front for the line drive knock. One down. Tyler Sodstrom up next for the A’s. He is struck out and he is walked. Just missed. swing and a popup short brings it in and there’s two down. Now batting catcher Shay Langers. So it’s their last chance in this one and now a chance for Shay Langalers. And that’s downstairs. Ball one. And a slider misses down and away. Let’s go. That one misses. Three and O. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. And a strike in there. Take it all the way on three 0 right there. And as a hitter, you’re saying, “Why couldn’t I get that pitch earlier in the count when I’m looking to swing?” A sliding stop. And that’s the ball game. What a play to finish it. When you win five in a row, the confidence just goes to another level. And you start to gain this momentum. And you think that you’re never going to lose a game again because things are clicking up and down the lineup. Pitchers are pitching. The team is making the plays defensively. This is the kind of feeling it’s not going to last all season long, but you want to ride it as long as you possibly can, perhaps push it up to double digits. A 32 final score in this one. They hang on to win it by a run for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB.
