🔴LIVE 🔴Oakland Athletics VS Houston Astros / June 26/ Mlb Envivo/MLB the show 25
Oh, it’s the Athletics taking on the Houston Astros. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. So, almost ready to get underway. Today’s starting pitcher, Jason Alexander. And Singy, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Foul ball there. Righty delivers in there. And so now one and two. That one the other way and it stays fair around first heading for two and he’s got a leadoff double. Good two strike hitting right there. Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. So digging in, Nick Curts really strong hitting performance recently, hitting better than 350 this month on the ground right side. Singleton takes it himself. One out in the top of the first. Let’s take a look at our lineup. And an important bat for them. Batting fifth in this one. Shay Langalers. Yeah, definitely someone I always enjoy. You know, when I get a chance to watch him, whether he’s hitting in a game or even taking swings during batting practice, man, this guy is always so focused on what he’s doing on that task at hand. He’s got so much attention to detail that when he steps in the box, his success rate is really high. Brent Rooker in now. Takes ball one off the plate. Outside low. Two and0. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. Just missed. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. And ball four, two aboard. That just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone. Two on, one out. Tyler Soderstrom now at the plate and the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Can’t find it here. That’s six straight balls. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Schuman the runner at third. Rooker over at first with one away. Swing and a miss and a count. Two and one. Next offering is outside. Sheay Langalers in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Double play ball to second. Good feed. That’s one. And that’s two. No runs, one hit, a double. No errors, and one man left. Now here come the Astros. No score. And we’re back. And on the hill in this one, Luis Severino. What do we have on him? Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the ERA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that ERA will have dropped over time. Taylor Treml, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Swing and a liner foul off to the right. [Music] There’s a 1-1. That one missed. Swang and a miss. There’s that change up foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. [Music] Laser could be trouble around first and hustling for second. and he’s there with a lead off double. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. [Applause] Jose Altuve up to hit here. That’s off the inside corner and it’s one and0. Aluve always seems to be setting records or reaching milestones. Boo. In 2023, he became the fastest player to reach 2,000 career hits, 200 home runs, and 200 stolen bases in MLB history. Check swing, but he went too far. And it’s one and one. That one is upstairs. [Music] Altuve swings and connects deep to left and it’s off the out of town scoreboard coming home. [Applause] head first slide and he’s safe and it’s one- nothing. Well, that’s a lonely feeling for an outfielder. The read wasn’t great and it really hurts when it cost your team a run. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Here’s the catcher, Victor Keratini. Right through there for a strike. Runner at second. Nobody out. And a foul ball. Well struck left field and it bangs off the out of town scoreboard. Run comes in from second. It’s an RBI single and they take a two-run lead. Everything came together for him. So close to blasting that one out of here the other way, but that’s very tough to do when you take on the outfield gap like that. Beautiful swing though. let the ball get a little deep and drove it to the opposite field. And now it’s Christian Walker. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Sing maybe some nerves getting the best of him in the first. Well, it’s hard to know exactly if it’s nerves or not, but he just doesn’t have it right now. Those hitters on the other side, they’re going to say it’s nerves and use that as a competitive edge to try to jump on him even more. Severino pitch misses and that’s ball two. on the ground. Could be two offbalance feet. There’s one. How about that double play? They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. right fielder Cam Smith. There’s the strike. He’s given up a couple of runs, but the pitch count really not as high as you would think. Might be able to get through this one under 25 pitches. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole, he’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. That is the inning. But two runs for him and they jump ahead onto the second inning now from Dyken Park. It’s the Astros two and the A’s nothing. Back here at Dyken Park. Second inning set to go. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Shay Langalers. Alexander back to work. There’s the strike. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Fly ball down the line. Smith on the move. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. Next up for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. For whatever reasons, this is a hitter that performs better in night games. We’ll see what he brings in this one. That one inside ball one. Alexander in his second season, 32 years old. They got him off of waiverss earlier this season. Gets the call and the count one and one. Carl Dixon doing the umpiring behind the plate. And Boo, I’m not sure if it’s because he sort of sets up higher than most, but one thing to be aware of with Dixon is the high strike. Not usually a big deal because most players are swinging at pitches up there, but we may see some surprise looks from hitters from time to time because that’s just so unusual. One out. Base is empty. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, that’s a good take by him. And that catches the low inside corner. Good fast ball. Battling here as he fouls it away. Pop dump. Walker settles under it and there’s two down. Batting seven, right fielder Carlos Cortez. Now it’s the right fielder Carlos Cortez. Astros. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. the 01 and a strike. Two outs. Base is empty. Inside and it’s one and two. Ripped on the ground to second and that is the third out of the inning. Nothing doing there for the A’s. They trail things here two nothing and welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the second, digging in, John Singleton. And first offering is fouled off. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say, “Charge it.” Crazy. [Applause] [Applause] Mauricio Dubon stands in now and watches strike one. Squirts away a little bit. Ruer at first with no outs here. swing and a ball lifted left field. Sodrom pulls it in and there’s one away. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Bryce Matthews up next for the Astros. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. And a big swing and a miss. Late swing fouled off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And that one hit to first and he can’t come up with it. And it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Now it’s Zack Short. It’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Well, I know they’ve gotten out to an early lead, but you don’t want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs. still lock in with a quality at bat. Drive in that run. You may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game. Cortez makes the play and that will end the inning. So they can’t do anything with the leadoff single there. We play two full. It’s the Astros two and the A’s nothing. Top half of the third inning. Here’s Gioella. Third baseman Gio Orala pitch is in there. It’s 0 and one. the other way and he handles it himself for the out. Batting night, second base, Luis Urias. Here’s Luis Aras. How about this one, Boog? In 2023, Aras hit grand slams for Boston in back-to- back plate appearances. They happened on different days, but he still became the first Red Sox player to do it since Jimmy Fox in 1940. One down, base is empty. That one finds the zone and it’s nothing and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Hit hard to the ground and up the middle. face in. So, a man aboard now with one away. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count. Up against it with two strikes right there. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. Next to hit, Max Schuman slashes this one and it could be trouble in safely with a double. His second of the day, man. He just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying his mechanics. So, two in scoring position with one out. Nick Curts up next for the A’s. First pitch misses. [Music] Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. One runs in. Throw comes in and holds a runner at third. They’re at the corners now with still only one away. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Brent Rooker will hit next. Walked his first time. Fought off foul. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Two on, one out. Ground ball right side. Could be two. Quick feed to second for one. And they bounce into two already. This one ends the third. But the RBI single pushes across a run. And it’s now a two-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. set for the bottom of the third. And stepping in for the Astros, Taylor Trmell. TLE. Swinging a foul. Out of play. Up the middle. Over to first. One up, one down. Now batting left fielder Jose. Here’s the former MVP Jose Altuve. Doubled his first time up. And that one is lifted in the air. Cortez pulls it down and he makes the catch. And there’s two away. Now batting catcher Victor two out space is empty at the plate. Victor Keratini singled and drove in a run his first time through. Close but called a ball. And that is ball one. and he hits a ground ball right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Nothing doing there for Houston, but they still lead it two to one. Back here in Houston leading off Tyler Sodro. throw. Come on. Line drive jumps, but it’s off his glove. The throw is still in time. He keeps his composure and they get the outer langers. Shay Langalers up next for the A’s. Fly to right his first time. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. Yeah. And because he’s got the big arm, he pays attention to the running game and is sure to manage it. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. When you have a catcher that can throw like that, a pitcher doesn’t have to worry as much about the slide. He can keep his mechanics intact and have a better opportunity of getting that hitter out with a swing and miss. Outside low and a count twoon one. Swing and a bouncer out to short. Short throws to first in time. Up next for the A’s, center fielder Lawrence Butler. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. He’s 0 for one. And that one a little below the knees. Ball one. And that’s in for a strike. That’s outside. Two balls in a strike. [Music] And that’s ripped into left. Base hit. And that keeps the inning alive. Now batting rightiel. So up next, Carlos Cortez. 0 for one so far. First offering misses badly for ball one. Butler leads off first with two down to the inning. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. Two outs. Off the mark there. Ball two. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. And he grounds one to the right side. Singleton. He takes it himself to the bag. And that’ll do it. The A’s strand one. They’re down two to one. Back here in Houston, John Chami and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Christian Walker. Come on, Houston. And that one missing low. [Applause] That’s a strike. And the count even one and one. on the ground to short. Whips it across. Lead off hitter retired in the fourth. He’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. So digging in Cam Smith. He’s 0 for one. Liner to second and picked on the hop to first. It’s there and that’s a great play. Up next for the Astros first base John Singleton up next for the Astros. One for one with a single so far. First pitch doesn’t find the zone and that’s downed away. Inside corner and that’s called a strike. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth and it’s fouled away and it remains two and two. Swing and a highf fly ball down the right field line. Cortez makes the play and it’s out number three. ready now for the fifth inning. Here’s the third baseman. Gio Urchella. Alexander back to work. Fouled off down the right side. Urchella 33 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. You know, these A’s doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. They have yet to strike out and they’re averaging more than a hit per inning. That’s a great recipe for success right there. Throws to second, not in time. That’s a leadoff double. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Jason Alexander won’t go any further. Not his best performance, but he leaves with the lead. And we’ll get a new arm into the game after this. Hunter Brown takes over on the mound and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. Luis Urias up next for the A’s. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. right side brings it in. Grounder tags at second and it comes in too late. He’s up to third on the fly out with one away. Now that short stop, Max Schum. Now here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Matt Schum. I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone here. Pitchers looking for a strikeout or a ground ball, hoping to keep that runner at third. Pitch misses there and that’s ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. From Valdez, the left-hander up and throwing. King also getting ready. Next offering upstairs. This situation, he’s trying to get you to pop something up or jam you. That’s a really good take knowing you got an opportunity to drive in a run here. Next offering is in for a strike. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. That one misses. Three balls in a strike. Really been able to slow down the game tonight with his at bats and the biggest one he’s had so far. He doesn’t look anxious at all. and ball four two aboard. Walks out of the bullpin can absolutely kill your momentum very quickly. They’re in some hot water trying to protect this lead. Runners at the corners here. One away. Nick Curts digs in now. Picked up an RBI in his last at bat. Still their only run of the game so far. Just missed. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. Got it started a little too early. Strike one. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. The next offering misses and it’s two and one. way to lay off that pitch down. And strike two. Great spot to be in right here for the pitcher. He can either strike this guy out or get a ground ball double play. Two two now. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Squway at a high-fly ball. Well struck. That’s back there. And that one is gone. He’ll take a trot around the bases. Home run number 20 on the year. And the A’s jump in front. It’s 42. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself. At bat after at bat, he’s that confident. At this level, you got to be good. Sometimes you got to be a little lucky. That was a pretty nasty pitch. Sinker on the outside corner, but he did a great job of covering it and he hit the ball out of the park. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. That one back. gone. It finds the Crawford boxes. A home run. They do it again. Backto back homers. And they add a run. It’s 52. Sitting first pitch fastball. And that’s what he delivered. He guessed right, squared it up, and he made it look way too easy. Back-to-back homers. Always a special feeling at the ballpark, especially if it’s your team that does it and those guys get to slap hands at home plate. This is the kind of thing that can really fire up a ball club. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Hunter Brown is done. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. From Valdez into the game and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Base is empty, one away. Tyler Sodstrom up next for the A’s. That one fouled off to the right side and that one handled. Sends it to first. Got the out. Good armside run and sink on that pitch right there. Got inside on him and got him to bounce into that out. And now a chance for Shay Langalers. That misses and that’s ball one. Four runs already in the frame and we’re in the top of the fifth. Right through there for a strike. Well, don’t expect too many more high fast balls. This is a good sinker ball pitcher and sometimes they can make mistakes trying to pitch up in the zone. Look for him to stay down around the knees to be effective. Gets it to first. That’ll end the inning after a lot of scoring. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s 52. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. Here’s Mauricio Dubonated Mauricio Dub and that’s a little bit high and it’s one and0. Well, these Astros just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. And that’s a fair ball down the right field line. And that’s going to roll a while. Safe at second with a leadoff double. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Here’s the second base, Bryce Matthews. Fouled off. He was late. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Love how vocal the umpire is today. No doubt in the hitter’s mind, catcher’s mind, and even the pitcher’s mind as to the conviction in the call. line drive and that should be extra bases. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score. [Applause] We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up, and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. Very good at bat with two strikes. So, next up for Houston, Zack Short. The shorts stop takes a ball. Matthews stands at second with no outs. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Next offering upstairs. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. Last half of inning number five. Now a pop up on the infield. He makes the grab and there’s one down. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. So the batting order turns over. Here’s Taylor Trel. [Applause] that clips the corner. That was just paint on the first pitch fast ball. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. [Music] man at second. That one not close and the count one and two. Next offering misses down and away. [Applause] One out and a runner at second. Gets a piece and stays alive. Severino kicks, steals, got him. Now two away. Unafraid to throw it right there. That’s trusting your stuff. Just one out away from getting out of a huge jam. Jose Altuve. Now the left fielder, Jose Altuve. And that one lifted in the air center field. Butler under this one and he makes the catch. And that is that. But a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. It’s now 53. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. All set for the top of the six. And now it’s going to be Lawrence Butler. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Swing and a miss and a count is 0 and two. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Had him out front for strike three. Well, clearly just anxious right there. And understandably so in an 02 count, you feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out. That’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate, but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand by the time you This one’s into the outfield could be extra bases. Now around second going for third. The relay throw pulls him off the bag and he’s saved. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. Just a beautiful triple from start to finish. Got a pitch he could drive, turned on it, and hammered it out front into the gap. Right out of the box. I love how he was hustling, and I think he knew he was going for three as soon as it touched down. Giorella steps in. One for two. Inside just missed. The A’s looking to add another. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. That one the other way. Snags it for the second out. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Stepping in, Luis Urias. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. And there’s a foul ball. Let’s go. Two outs. Swinging a foul straight back. Ball one there. Rarely will you see a pitcher just to waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out. What was that? Still able to come through behind in the count right there. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. So the lineup flips over. Max Schuman the next to hit. First pitch and he just misses. Urias off of first with two away. Ripped to third but handled. And that’ll end the inning. But they pick up one run on the RBI single and they’ve doubled up now. It’s 63. Well, we go bottom six. Vic Keratini at the plate. Victor Keratini. First pitch just misses. [Applause] Hard hit right side. Steps on first for the out. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning. Anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. So, here’s the Astros cleanup hitter Christian Walker. Check swing. He went strike one. He’s been going after these guys consistently and as a result, he’s been able to keep his pitch count low. Throwing the ball very well right now. And there’s a ball. Hit in the air right field and that one way back there and that is way gone. His 14th of the year and they inch closer. It’s 64. He just sent a jolt of electricity into this stadium with that swing. [Applause] That one was a hanger and pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there he made him pay. [Applause] Cam Smith up next for the Astros. [Applause] And a foul ball and that’s a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. Luis Severino gives way. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now pitching for the a new arm into the game, the righty Elvis Alvarado. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. One gone runner at first. John Singleton up next for the Astros. That’s in there. Strike one. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. That’s in there. Oh, and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Outside now. One and two. That one ran inside. Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit with the tying run at the plate here in the bottom of the six. Pitch misses and now it’s three and two on this count. runner. Not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. Got him looking. Two gone now. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Mauricio Dubon now at the plate. That one finds the zone. And that’s strike one. Up the middle. Gloves it on the dive. What a play. Inning over. Astros claw back a bit on this solo homer. It’s now a 64 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. We go to the top of the seventh and now the first baseman, Nick Curts. Well struck right field hits the fence takes the turn. He’s digging for second. The throw to second is offline. Well, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now there are several ways that they can get this run across. Now it’s going to be Brent Rooker. It was a homer for him back in the fifth. Just a solo shot, but an important swing in this game. Yeah, and it was a beautiful swing as well. Everything just came together timing wise and he blasted it out of here. [Music] And that is out of play. Headed down the line and that will drop. Foul. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the top half of inning number seven. Not close with that one. And count one and two. missed inside with the curve. Ground ball to the right side. Fair ball headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. Picks himself up an RBI. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box. Got a pitch he liked and he got it done. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. From Valdez won’t go any further and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. So a new pitcher out of the bullpen for the Astros. Brian King just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. And that is in for a strike. 0 and one. man at second. And that one fouled off. Walker zips it to first. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. And here’s the catcher, Shay Langalers. Langelers, Astros. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Just missing off the plate there according to the umpire. and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. Little chopper rolls foul and that’s outside. Two and one. late on that fast ball. Kelly just threw that fast ball by him, elevated and if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity and a swing and a miss. That’s the second out. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. But when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. Here’s the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Rooker stands at second with two gone. And that one in the air center field. And that’ll do it. A’s get one on the RBI double. It’s now 74. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Number 49. And stepping in for the Astros, Bryce Matthews. Second baseman Bryce Matthews. Check swing called strike. Fouled off left side. Pitch in the dirt. It’s a ball in two strikes. [Applause] Swings and miss has struck him out. Beat him inside on that last pitch. And when you look back at the pitch sequence on that strikeout, it’s pretty interesting. Away, in, away, and then back in again. Really commanded both sides of the plate right there. And that makes it pretty tough to get comfortable in the box. Zack Short up next for the Astros. Bowl for two in this one. Pitch misses inside. One and0. The Stros trailing by three here. The bottom of the seventh. Next offering is in for a strike. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Jacob Lopez up and loosening in the pen. Bowden also throwing one down. Base is empty. It’s in and out of his glove. Still able to fire over and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Now, Taylor Trmelll, one for three. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Foul ball there. Two down. Nobody just missed. That one catches the zone and it’s two and two. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Let’s go. That one missed. There’s a swing and a drive. That ball’s carrying. Gone into the deck area in center. Home run. And they cut into the deficit. It’s 75. Things might get pretty interesting if they keep connecting on pitches like that. [Applause] Oh, that one got in the jetream on a line drive. We saw the numbers on the backs of the jerseys of the outfielders, which is usually bad news. And all of a sudden they’re back in this ball game. Two outs, nobody on. Now the number two hitter, Jose Altuve and a popup right side foul territory. Makes the catch and that’s the third out. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s now 75. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Caleb Ort hasn’t pitched in the last three days. And here is Carlos Cortez, rightielder Carlos Cortez. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Or 33 years old. And he found his way onto the team after being claimed off waiverss late that time. And it’s strike two. And that one hammered on its way. That’s long gone. He made him pay for that one. His first homer of the year. And they boost their lead. It’s 85. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Well, I’m not really sure how he kept that fair. When you’re out in front on a breaking ball like that, such a good chance that it’s going to hook foul, but not this time. He kept the hands moving forward just long enough to sneak it inside that foul pole. Now here’s Gio. Easy. Let’s go. First pitch misses. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. And that’s off the inside edge. Now 2-0 activity in the Houston bullpen. Bennett Susa preparing to come on if needed. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. And we’re in the top of the eighth. And a foul ball. [Music] That one missing inside. Boo. never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Foul ball. Headed towards the corner and that’s a foul ball. [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Now it’s the second baseman Luis Urias. Luis. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Smith puts it away. And there’s two away. Now batting short stop Max. Two down, base is empty. And the batter will be the shortstop Max Schuman. There’s the strike and the sweeper misses for a ball that misses the zone. Now two balls in a strike. [Music] Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. And the sweeper is off the plate. That’s a walk. Went with another change up and missed the spot. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Man at first. Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts. And it may be a long shot, but a triple here will give him the cycle. And ball one. [Applause] Move to first. Schuman dives back in safely. The one-1. That one ripped but fouled. Two outs. And now the count filled up. Three and two. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Schuman off of first with two away. So now two on and two outs. Pretty good spot on the outside, but just couldn’t quite clip the zone. That’s a stone cold take. First and second, two outs. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. He’s already homered here in this one. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point, that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Way upstairs. Ball one. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. Fought off foul. First and second, two down. The 1-1 is fouled off. and down on strikes. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s now 85. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Ben Bowden in a game for the first time this season. Number 62. Now, here is Victor Keratini. Well, both sides equally as strong, so not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. That misses the zone. And that is ball one. The Athletics have some bullpen action. Prince Lloyd, the closer, getting cranked up for a possible save opportunity. The 10 And there’s a foul ball. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. And that one is lifted in the air. Cortez drop steps, heads back on it. Makes the grab. One down. Now batting third base. And now Christian Walker. He’s already homered in this game. [Music] And that misses. And that’s ball one. Let’s go Astros way inside. Gets out of the way. Lefty continues to work, but the closer getting loose in the bullpen. That one fouled off. Two and two. One down, base is empty. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. First strike out for him in this one. That splitter is maybe the go-to pitch when he’s looking for a swing and miss like that. He throws it quite a bit and that’s a good example of the effect it can have on a hitter. Smith in the box here. lets that one go for a ball. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning that one close rule the ball and it’s two and0. [Music] Fast ball for a strike. Two-1 pitch is in there and the count is even. Swings through it and that’s a strikeout. So, no runs, no hits, no errors and no one left. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the A’s eight and the Astros five. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Bennett Susa. He comes on for the 35th time this year. Here’s the left fielder, Tyler Soderstroke. 0 for four with four ground outs. Ground ball right side Matthews and the leadoff man retired here in the ninth. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Now batting catcher Shay Langalers Shay Langalers up next for the A’s. Ground ball. Walker handles throws to first. Two up, two down. Now batting the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. Next up for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. That misses and that’s ball one. Activity in the bullpen. Ryan Gusto up and throwing that drops in for a strike. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. Next offering upstairs. Fast ball for a strike at 95. slow roller to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So they make short work of him there. 678 scheduled to start the bottom of the ninth. It’s the A’s eight and the Astros five. Back now and on the mound the closer Prince Lloyd a chance at his first save of the year. And here is John Singleton leading off for the Astros first base John Singleton. That one fouled off. And it’s fouled away. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. One down. Well, the first batter, it’s always a big one for the closer. I mean, you get that punch out, you get settled in, you feel like you’re in command out there on the mound from the jump and kind of prevents any doubt from creeping into your mind or the fielders that are playing behind you that, you know, you’re going to wrap this thing up. Dubon batting with one down, takes the strike. That’s off the inside corner. And now it’s even one and one. Line to second. Snagged on the bounce. Nicely done for the out. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. So, they’re down to their final out. Bryce Matthews getting ready to hit. Hit to the left side. And this is going to do it on to first ball game. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. And this one ends with the score 8 to five. The A’s are victorious for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shambi. Thanks for joining us.
