A PROBLEM For The 2025 Los Angeles Chargers…

All right, guys. Day eight of the Los Angeles Chargers training camp. There’s been two padded practices so far, which happened on Tuesday and Thursday. And guard Zion Johnson has not yet practiced at center. He has had three practices in general at the position, but none being padded. And there’s been a lot of doubt about is it ever going to happen. And for all I know, when the Chargers practice today, he could actually be there. I’m going to go on a limb and say that he’s not. Monday, I think would probably be a little bit more realistic, but it just doesn’t make too much sense why the Chargers haven’t worked him up already to this point. I get that they had to start earlier than other teams for training camp because they’re playing in the Hall of Fame game, but you just look at last season and something had to be changed. Like Bradley Boseman and Zion Johnson just were not good enough. And just swapping their positions, how much of an impact is that really going to make? Because the reason why the Chargers lost against the Texans There was a couple of the key drops. I didn’t think Herbert played the best, but there was constant pressure in his face. The interior was getting beat over and over again. And not only that, but they couldn’t run the ball. So, bringing back two of the three guys that were there, technically all three are back, but one of them, of course, is going to be in the second unit, second string. I just don’t quite understand why the Chargers didn’t do more this off season to address that. They did bring in Mai Beckton. I’ll give them that. and maybe he’s going to make a big time impact. But overall, it’s just all going to come down to the season, in my opinion, about the development of Zion Johnson and getting him to that center position. The game definitely is fast at that spot. I think Zion’s built for it, though, and I liked him, of course, when the Chargers drafted him years ago. I think he’s got a lot of potential. Bradley Boseman, on the other hand, I mean, I don’t know, that’s a story for a different time. But just looking at the reports and and what I’m reading is that yeah, Zion, the Chargers do want to get him into a p of practice like as soon as possible. But it just doesn’t seem like they feel like he’s ready and they’re still trying to get down the basics of course uh each and every day. And there has been also a rotation as well of Boseman at the five and then Boseman at guard and he hasn’t played guard since what I think it was 2022 or something like that with the Ravens with of course Greg Roman. So you got two guys who one guy who hasn’t played center at all college or in the NFL and then another guy who hasn’t played guard in three years to this point. So I’m not sure how it’s going to go. It could absolutely work. It also couldn’t and the same issues that lied with the Chargers last season could be there. I mean at the end of the day, only time will tell and we should know pretty soon once the pads come on for Zion at the center where exactly he’s at in terms of his development. But just his mindset, his mentality, I’ve absolutely loved it. the things he said to the media. I think he’s at least knows that, hey, look, you know, last season I wasn’t at my best. I got to be a lot better. I got to help protect not even just Herbert, but I got to protect, you know, the running backs as well. You got to be able to run the ball if you’re the Chargers, especially in this division with the Chiefs and the Broncos. And the Raiders are going to be a lot better because they got Pete Carol. I mean, look at the Chargers when they brought in Jim Harbaugh. They went 11 games in year one. I mean, not saying the Raiders, I don’t think the Raiders are an 11 win type of team. they’re going to be much more improved just because of the culture and things like that. So, it’s just critical that the Chargers fix this and they at least get it right. Um, fixing it is one thing, but it’s just they got to put their guys in a situation to where they’re going to be able to succeed. And from just what Jim Harbaugh said, from what Greg Roman has said, it seems like they really do believe in Zion Johnson. And a lot of these guys, like the majority of these guys weren’t drafted by them as well, like it was a different regime. So to have your coach and your GM and your offensive coordinator back you, it means a lot. It’s the same thing with Quinton Johnson as I I get comments every day from Charger fans saying that, oh, we see this, you know, every single year in training camp, you know, QJ is going to break out and things like that, which is fair, but also if you listen to what is being said inside of the locker room, everyone is praising Johnson. He just looks like a different player. And of course, we’re going to like I showed a clip at the beginning of the video of him dropping a pass, but there’s also been I lost track of how many cut touchdowns he’s even caught so far in training camp. I mean, he had five through the first five days. I know he had one yesterday. Actually, no, the Chargers were off yesterday. It’s Friday. Yesterday was Friday. Um Thursday, he caught a touchdown. Um and then today, of course, they are practicing very shortly here. I don’t know when this video is coming out, but I will react tomorrow about what happened at that pad of practice because there’s already been two. And the biggest thing is simply is Zion going to be at the center position. Like that’s what everyone seems to be talking about right now. The defensive line has been great. The receivers have been great. The the corners have been making plays. You talk about last practice of course on Thursday. The DBs were flying around the field. There was interceptions, batted balls, just deflections. I I just absolutely love what I saw of the DBs. And it’s going to be an absolute gauntlet to see who ends up playing because Dante Jackson makes a strong case. You know, Dean Leonard’s solid and then, you know, Cam Hart still kind of feel like locks to this point, but Jazir Taylor has had a really good training camp. Benjamin St. Juice is solid. Um, even Reed, you look at Reed, of course, who the Chargers got out of what Oregon, he’s well, he’s a younger guy for sure, but he had a interception. I actually had a pick six. So, just everyone is contributing. There’s been multiple guys at every single level that have impressed me. Um, especially just these younger rookies, man. and they just gone out there and competed, man. And they’re trying to, you know, fight for a 53man spot. Some of them are even trying to fight for a starting spot. Um, we talked about the defensive line last video, and a player who I think is going to be a future star is Jamari Caldwell. He’s had a really good camp so far. Um, he looks like a veteran out there, man. The Chargers have so much depth, it’s just absurd to this point. And that’s going to be able to help them, of course, during a long season. I mean, there’s 18 weeks, 17 games of your by- week, and then you got to play in the playoffs, you know, wild card and, you know, this and that. It’s just it’s a long season, man. And the Chiefs, I think a big reason why they lost the Super Bowl was just because of how gassed they were of making deep playoff run after deep playoff run. And the Chargers need to use that to their advantage because obviously we haven’t been making deep playoff runs. So, you got to come out this season and just beat the Chiefs by your depth. having several guys that you could rotate in and out of the defensive line and of course the receiving position, the DBs, just attack as much as you can. And the Chargers are going to be very healthy towards the end of the season just because they have a lot of versatility. So, I’m definitely excited about that. I’m excited about the report that comes out from Saturday’s practice. It’s not out yet. Um, to be honest with you, it usually comes out like pretty late, so we’ll have to kind of wait till tomorrow on that. So, yeah, we’re breaking down each day the day after it comes out. I don’t think it’s the end of the world, to be honest. But um yeah, make sure you guys go check out the athletic. You guys go check out Chargers wire, things like that. If you’re trying to stay up to date immediately, Twitter’s also probably the best thing. I just got on, uh Chargers Twitter a couple of days ago, so um eventually I’ll probably link that. You guys want to follow me or I’ll follow you back. We also have a Discord as well. I just want to see Justin Herbert though be put into a situation to where he’s legitimately going to have a chance to win. It feels like he hasn’t had that so far. And I get he wasn’t at his best in against the Texans, but he just never really had a chance because the pass rush was just wreaking havoc for the Texans. They couldn’t run the ball. The defense played very well, but the drops were also huge. Like you go back and you look Will Dizzy had a huge drop. You know, Quinton Johnson had a big drop. Like those things just can’t happen. A ball can’t be hitting your hands and going into the defensive back’s hands or whatever or linebacker and and then they’re running it in for a pick six. If you can get your hands on the ball, you’ve got to be able to catch that. And Herbert also had a lot of good throws too and just they weren’t they weren’t executed man. And another thing to even expand upon that is Lakoni. Lakanki’s development is going to be dependent on the outside receivers around him. If the Chargers don’t improve that, then they’re not going to be able to get to the next level. Which is why I love them going out of course and drafting Keandre Lambert Smith and drafting Trey Harris for example. And they did bring in Mike Williams, but then he retired like the day before training camp started, which is fine. Ronnie Gadson, I think he’s going to have a really good rookie season. He’s been breaking out in training camp. I know a lot of people in the organization like him a
