MLB LIVE🔴 Arizona Diamondbacks vs Pittsburgh Pirates – Jul 26, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
So, just about set now. And on the mound today, Paul Ste. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. a lot more guys striking out today. But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. Catel Marte, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. [Music] The one fouled off. He was late. Misses off the play and a count two and one. If you’re going to miss, you want to miss outside the zone. When you miss inside the zone, it’s trouble. That’s off the inside corner. And now three and one. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. With kit mini like that in that location, I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there in the mouth. Gets a piece and stays alive. 3-2 fouled off and they’ll do it again. That one misses. So a lead off walk. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there. Anyhow, this is Corbin Carroll. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. Swinging a foul out of play. Here’s a fun fact on Corbin, and I I don’t know if everyone remembers their first jersey, but Carol certainly does. He used to rock an Ichiro Suzuki growing up. Marte on at first. Nobody out. Pitch misses. And now it’s even one and one. One strike. That one in triple digits. Man, that pitch was dotted. So much talent on display when this guy’s out there on the hill. Cuts on it, misses. That’s a strike out. Chase the fast up the ladder for strike three. word gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. With all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So, very difficult to get the barrel on it. Lordis Goreel Jr. in the box now. No balls in a strike. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. really good take especially with two strikes. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. And it gives him the lead in the first. It’s two nothing. That was blasted. Absolutely no doubt off the bat. Most times it’s the pitcher looking at the scoreboard for velocity, but in this case it’s the hitter. He just turned around triple digits at the dish. I don’t even know how he saw that pitch. Maybe he didn’t, but he got a home run out of it. Au Heno Suarez up to the plate now. Ball one there. And the one foul ball. Still only one out here in the inning. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. Love to see it. Power versus power right there. That one just missing inside. Two and two. [Music] Strike three. Ski gets the strike out. Wow, that’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. Not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to at least for now allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can. And now it’s Josh Naylor. Two out. Space is empty. Fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Misses the zone. Two balls in a strike. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. It falls in and that’s a hit. The throw in and he’ll make it to second base with two gone. I love the approach he had right there with that pitch. Not trying to do too much but still looking to drive it and that’s exactly what he’s able to do into the opposite field gap for the double. So runner at second, two down. Gritic getting ready to hit in the first pitch. Misses for ball one. One ball, no strikes. Man on second, two down. Fought off foul. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. in the air pretty deep out to center field. Cruz sizing this one up and he makes the catch and that is that Dbacks at a pair on the homer. It’s now a two nothing ball game. Back after this on the show back here at PNC Park and pitching in this game, Zack Gallon and Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah, and you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpen mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Spencer Horowitz, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And that is out of play. Ball two. That one misses in the dirt. And that one fouled off. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Now, this was a story we were paying attention to before the game. We’ve seen him give up walks in the past and it’s an issue once again early on. So, a man at first. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit. Top of the zone for a called strike. No ball. One strike. [Music] And a big swing and a miss. No balls. Two strikes. [Music] Pitch misses inside now. One and two. [Music] And that’s downstairs and outside. Well, I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. Keep it going. McCutchen tries to hold up. Appeal to first and that’s a strike out. Ed Drummond says he went around. Brian Reynolds here. And a slider misses down and away. 10. Horowitz over at first with one away to third might be two. Suarez to second on a nailer. They get two. So no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. We head to the second from PNC Park. It’s the Diamondbacks two and the Pirates nothing. Back here in Pittsburgh, James McCann in now. Just missed. One ball. No strike. [Music] Ball no. Making the calls behind the plate in this one is Woody Keller. Yeah, and Woody does a pretty good job back there, Boo. He’s got a pretty fair strike zone most of the time. Maybe some inconsistency here or there, but usually he’s back there doing a solid job. And another ball. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Next offering is in for a strike. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. Next offering is fouled back. Highf fly ball lifted in the air right field. Reynolds makes the catch and there’s one away. Second base Alexander. So digging in Bla1 Alexander right through there for a strike. Inside just missed. One out. Base is empty. [Music] puts it in the air out towards left center. Sinsky makes the catch and there’s two away. Two outs. Base is empty. Heraldo Peromo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. swing and a miss as he was late. The strong second inning is a confidence builder for him. A relief for his manager. Doesn’t have to get into that bullpen quite as early. Out towards right center. That’s well struck. That one back there. Out of here. his 11th of the year. It’s 3 nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. an outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. So, back to the top of the Arizona lineup. Catel Marte up to the plate. That’s outside. Ball one. Rips one to left. That’s a base hit and that keeps the inning going. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. Corby Carol swings it now. Good power and he’s homered off some really big names early in his career. Yeah, Boo. His first home run was against U Darvis. He also got to Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer shortly after. It’s easy to gain confidence when you’re having success against the biggest names in the sport. One run across in the frame so far here in the top of the second and a foul ball. Outside low and it’s two and one. Fast ball for a strike. And down on strikes he goes. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. Daxs get one on the solo jack. It’s now three nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the second at the plate for Pittsburgh. Nick Gonzalez. [Music] One of the things amazing with Zack. Think about the players he’s been traded with and for. In December of 17, he and Sandy Alcantra were dealt to Miami from the Cardinals for Marcel Ozuna. Then ultimately in July of 19, he went to Arizona for Jazz Chisum in the air to left center. Guriel handles the chance. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. [Music] And first offering is fouled off. [Music] Next offering is fouled back inside. And the count one and two. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. Alexander pulls it down and there’s two gone. That’s a really nice play. Ranging back into the outfield for that catch. We all know those can be a little tricky, especially if the wind’s swirling around out there. Two down, base is empty now. batting key Brian Hayes. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season, Chris. First pitch misses and another ball. There’s a strike up high and it’s two and one now. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Looks like a really good fast ball today. You can hear that catcher mitt popping. Looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one. The wind of the pitch. [Music] Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. Zoe gets on base and keeps it going. Pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap. And I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bottle. So many positives that led to that knock. Jack Sinski in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike late that time and it’s strike two. I think he was sitting off speed there. That’s a ball in the dirt. Blocked. struck him out swinging. He swung over top of the curveball. Pirates leave one. They trail in this one three nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now the left fielder Lordis Goreel Jr. Skins back to work. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. You know these Dbacks doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at Bat. Now this ball is well hit. This one’s got a chance. And that is a foul ball. just off the inside corner and that’s ball one. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Swing and a miss. And he struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Hey, Suarez up to hit now. That misses the zone. Ball one. One ball. No strikes. That one missed. Well, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. [Music] 101 on the gun. Swing and a miss. Wow. Good luck catching up to that one. Bands another. And that’s three straight strikeouts, back-to- back strikeouts to start the frame. And that’s now three in a row. Yeah, he’s really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches, throwing them where he wants to right now. So, we’ll see how long he can keep this streak going. And first off is fouled off. That one in triple digits. No ball. Two strikes. Smoked on the ground to second. Tosses to first and Arizona is set down. One, two, three. Three up, three down for him. There we head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Diamondbacks three and the Pirates nothing as we go to the last of the third. And now the catcher comes up to Henry Davis. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Oh, look at the stop and he beats it. That’s a hit. Great try there. Tough play on a nice backhand stop. Had to be perfect with the exchange and throw to get the out, but it looked like he had to dig in there a little deeper like he was trying to get a split finger grip or something. Close play, but that little extra time on the transfer made all the difference. Here is Isaiah Ker Falefa. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, give them a little bit more trouble. There’s the strike. [Music] Swing and a ball ripped out towards right center field. That’ll touch down for a hit. Throw comes in. Runner stopped. Second and third. Nobody out. Backto-back base hits. Fast pretty much middle middle. And that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. [Applause] back to the top of the lineup. So, next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Spencer Horowitz let off the bottom of the first with a walk. Fast ball is outside. [Music] Yeah, that’s fouled off. There’s a one-1 swing and a miss. There’s that change up. Two, two in scoring position. Nobody out here in the last half of the third to third and that chance handled. Tosses across to first. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. [Music] Here’s McCutchen 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. You have to stay disciplined in these at bats. Try not to chase. A strike out here is the last thing you want. And that one upstairs. Ball one. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield. And that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. And that misses. And it’s 2 and 0. just missed in this situation. He’s trying to get you to pop something up or jam you. That’s a really good take knowing you got an opportunity to drive in a run here. And now three and one. Reb one strike. Ripped to third, gets it to first and McCutchen is out. Ryan Reynolds digs in now. He’s 0 for one. This one in the dirt tag see he’s into third on the wild pitch. Have to be really sure you can make it safely to third when you’re in scoring position and two outs. Got to get that run across. Very important. Does a nice job of reading it. Gets to third base now just 90 ft away. Connor Falefa on third with two out and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Two outs. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. [Music] Swing and a miss. And he got him. Good job at damage control right there. A run on two hits and they leave one. On to inning number four. He hits the Diamondbacks three and the Pirates won. back here at PNC Park. New inning getting started. Now it’s the right fielder Randall Gritic. And a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. Next offering is in for a strike. Swings and misses on the fast up in the zone for the strike out. Just blown away in that at bat. Three fast balls, all strikes. He wasn’t even able to foul one off. There’s not much you can take away from an at bat like that as a hitter other than maybe there’s something wrong with your eyes. He’s got to have better timing on the fast ball next time. McCann in the box now as he looks at ball one. Second played appearance of the day for him. Next one is off the plate. Two and0. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. in this situation ahead 200. He’s put himself in a really good spot. Just missed. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. 101 catches the top of the zone for a strike. [Music] check swing and he went and it’s three and two. Can’t it cleanly still able to fire over and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Now batting second base Alexander. Bla1 Alexander stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And that one’s a little bit low. And that’s ball one. That’s in there. And now two balls in a strike. Once good pitch there had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. Davis down to first with it and he’ll be safe at first. So he’s able to reach first base despite the strikeout and that extends the inning. Kind of a tough turn of events for the defense there. Yeah, that’s maybe a little bit of a morale killer for a second. You think you’re about to go hit, but really quickly you have to refocus and be ready for the next play. We’ll see if they can work around it. So, two down and now here is Peralo Purdomo drilled in the air out towards right center. Reynolds trying to get there. He’s got it and that’ll do it. One error in the inning, but nothing more. On now to the bottom of the fourth, it’s the Diamondbacks three and the Pirates won. Bottom four. And stepping in is the speedy Nick Gonzalez. Nick Gonzalez outside and that is ball one. You know these Pirates showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense. up and in. Three balls, no strikes. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. Up next for the Pirates, O’Neal Cruz 0 for one with a fly out in there at the knees. It’s 0 and one. This is one of those situations defensively where you can’t try to do too much. You got to make sure that you feel the ball cleanly and get one out first. It’s going to be tough to get two with this kind of speed in the batters box. swings through that one for strike two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Ruer at first with no outs here. And that one moves his feet. Two, two. And that’s ruled the swing. It’s a strike out. Here’s the third baseman, Key Brian Hayes. One for one with a single so far. In there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. stay out of that double play in the air left field. Guriel trying to get there. Nabs it out number two. Up next for the Pirates leftielder. [Music] Jack Sinski the next Pirate to hit struck out swinging his first time. Come on, you can do it. Little bit low. One and0. Gonzalez the runner at first with two gone. A little out front there as he swings through it. 1-1. Two outs. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Two two in the dirt but kept close. [Music] Got him looking. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. So one left for Pittsburgh. Score holds. It’s 3-1. Back here in Pittsburgh, we go to the top of the fifth now. Catel Marte singing. He’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Well, just look at the back of my bubble gum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite. That one hit to right. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. One up, one down. Maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit. Couldn’t quite barrel it up enough to really drive it. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Corbin Carroll, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Curve ball over for a called strike. And that curve ball drops in there for a strike. Swing and a chopper out to short. Connor Falefa throws to first in time. And there are two outs. Now batting. Two out. Space is empty. Here’s Guriel. He’s already homered here in this one. Guriel in his sixth season, 31 years old, and he was born in Cuba. Off the plate, one ball, one strike. Right through there for a strike. That misses the zone and the count is even. Two and two. swing and a high-fly ball down the right field line and puts the squeeze on that one. And that’ll do it. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning. Here’s the Pirates catcher now. Henry Davis. Davis. Swing and a foul back and that’s out of play. You know, these Pirates need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings. Just one extra base hit for them. So, they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Foul ball still 0 and two. [Music] Good eye on that spot. This one popped up right side. Naylor gets under it. Carous it and there’s one down. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning. Anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Isaiah Ker Falefa up to the plate. doubled his first time. Lifted in the air right field, Gritic. They got it for out number two. [Music] And now the Pirates leadoff man, Spencer Horowitz. Highf fly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five and that’s off the inside edge. And the count is one and one. Just off the inside edge. Next offering is down low. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Full count. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient at the play, a game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. McCutchen in the box here. lets that one go for a ball. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. Two outs. No. And another ball. Brian Reynolds in the OD circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Music] The pitch to McCutchen pulls that one foul. [Music] There’s a swing and a drive. can’t get to it as it drops into the corner and that’s a double. Well, here we are. Third time through the order and this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. So, two on with two away. B-ray coming to the plate now. Go for two in this one. right through there for a strike. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Horowitz on third. McCutchen on at second with two down. Base hit. One run is in. Now a long throw home. It’s off the mark and he scores. Back even. It’s 33 gets the job done as he brings home a pair. Solid swing from start to end on time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive knock. Next, it’s the Pirates cleanup hitter Nick Gonzalez. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. [Music] Gallon checks on the runner and he’s back in on a dive. [Music] ball squirts away a little bit in there safely. So, a wild pitch allows the runner to advance. Going to have to buckle down and make a pitch or two to get out of this little jam he’s worked himself into after the two out hit. Then that wild pitch. Good time to step off. Take a deep breath. [Applause] man at second. That one fouled off. Two two in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate there. Man on second, two down. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Little dribbler up along third and that’s a foul ball. And now the count filled up. Three and two. O’Neal Cruz in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Got it. And that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. They get two and draw even again. Five innings complete. All tied up at three apiece. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher Carmen Majinski and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. AU Heno Suarez stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Infield shifted to the pull side. Not in time. Great effort, but it’s an infield hit. Hey, I got to give him credit for busting it down to first to beat out that hit. Speed is obviously not a big part of his game. It sounded different than most hits coming off the bat. You don’t need numbers to tell you the ball was hit extremely hard, but at 115 mph, that’s not an exit velocity you see very often. Very impressive. Go ahead run on base. Next to hit for Arizona, Josh Naylor headed towards the corner. And that is a foul ball. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. piece there. We’ll do it again. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two with a go ahead run at first. And we’re in the top half of the six. And there’s a ball. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitch would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six and misses. It’s a strike out. Randall Gick now struck out on just three pitches last time. on the ground to the left. Fires to second for one and that’s two. Poultry in motion there as the second baseman turns the double play. Nice throw to first and that’s the way to end the inning. Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Jake Woodford and he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. At the plate for Pittsburgh, O’Neal Cruz. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. Just missed. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. On the ground, Alexander, leadoff man, retired in the sixth. Now batting third base. Now the third baseman Krian Hayes. He is singled and he has flyed to left. First pitch doesn’t find the zone ball. Oh, all tied up here in the bottom of the sixth. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. So, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. So next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Jack Sinski. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. Man at first. One away. Inside. Struggled a little bit in this one. couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter’s count at two and 0. And there’s a base hit to left. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Back to back singles. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it. Crazy. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. Now a chance for Henry Davis. Two on, one out. In there at the knees and the count one and one. Last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Way out front for strike two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Yeah, the one two misses to even the count. Good job to fight that one off. Runners at first and second with one gone. Highfly ball out into left center field. Guriel has it sized up. Drops into the glove. Two away now. Isaiah Ker Falefa the next pirate to hit. One for two. That’s off the inside corner. And that’s ball one. One ball. No strike. And that one fouled off. Hayes the lead runner out at second. Sinsky at first. Two out in the inning. gets him to chase after that one. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there. Ah, he locked him up and that’ll do it. The inning is over. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. Back here at PNC Park, here is James Mccan. Majinski back to work and that’s in for a strike. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. The one-1 is fouled off outside. [Music] Swinging a ground ball. Fair ball. Go ahead. Run on base. Here’s the second base. Bla1 Alexander trying to move him over here over to Connor Falefa and he’ll hold on to it. So they get one. [Music] So up next, Heraldo Purdomo. He’s already homerred in this game. That one is absolutely belted. Reynolds on the run and he can’t quite get there. It’s a foul ball. [Music] That one’s in there. Oh, and two [Music] and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. An outstanding hitter in Coachell Marte. Well, both sides equally as strong. So, not a good time to try to turn him around with a belief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. That one rifted right center field and it one hops the wall. Brown’s third headed for the plate. He will score and the Diamondbacks take the lead. went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. When you can turn a ball around at 107 off the bat, it’s going to make you feel really good inside. He elevates that a little bit more. It’s definitely out of here. So, runner at second, two down. He gets the intentional walk here and now a force at any base with two gone. Now, here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. and it was a homer back in the first inning that got his day started at the plate. Yeah, Boo. A two-run blast. And that swing will give him confidence the rest of the way. There’s the strike. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there, but left the bat on his shoulder. Next off, Ry’s in for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. battling here as he fouls it away. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And that’s outside. And a good eye there, man. Oh, man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Two on, two outs. Now it bounces away. Can’t squeeze it. Should be a pass ball and there are two in scoring position now. Oh, this is a real gift here with two away. That’s a pitch that needs to be handled behind the plate and he knows it. Now you got to deal with two men in scoring position instead of just one. They need a big pitch right here to get out of it. Back to work. 3-2 now. Fouls it back with two strikes. He fouls it off. will do it again. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Reynolds makes the grab on the run. Dex with a runscoring double. It’s now a 43 ball game. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now the Pirates leadoff man Spencer Horowitz. And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. This guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. on the ground to third, slings it across and they get the lead off hitter in the seventh. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff just like we saw. And now it’s Andrew McCutchen. There’s the strike. and a swing to miss. Oh, that’s that slurf right there. He threw it extremely well. Talk about just a ton of break. So tough to get that barrel to. And he hits a ground ball right side. Toss to Naylor and a couple of quick outs. Well, there’s a lot riding on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work at the plate. Brian Reynolds and the first pitch misses for ball one. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] Highfly ball down the left field line. Guriel handles the chance. Pirates with a new arm on the mound. Caleb Ferguson should be a good first matchup for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Well, one-run game. Au Heno Suarez stands in now for the Diamondbacks. One for three. First pitch and he just misses. Ferguson a 63 lefty. He features a four seam fast, a cutter, a slur, and he works in a sinker. And another ball. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. Next offering is fouled back. That one to first Horowitz. And that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Now, first Naylor. Here’s Josh Naylor. Fast is outside. Movement in the bullpen. Number 47, the rookie right-hander is getting loose. Cabrera also getting ready. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the eighth. In the dirt, and the count is 2 and 0. Next offering is fouled back. Go. No. And it’s fouled away. [Music] got him looking and he did not like the call. So, he gets the call and picks up the strike out looking. Sometimes with a good hitter at the plate, he’ll be the one to get the benefit of the doubt if he lays off on a close pitch like that, but just not right there. Strike zone definitely expand a little bit with two strikes. Randall Gritic stands in now for the Diamondbacks. 0 for three in this one. First off, and it just misses. two down. Nobody on ball two. Now a screamer into the outfield. That’s a fair ball and it’s getting into the corner. Throws to second and he’ll pull into second safely. But when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Here’s the catcher, James McCann. a guy who’s turned himself into a good framer. Was originally drafted by the Tigers. Second round pick in 11. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Next offering is fouled back. and he couldn’t hold back. He’s run up on strikes. One left for the Diamondbacks, but they hold on to a 4-3 lead. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Trevor Richards. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Nick Gonzalez. fought off foul. Looking to get the tying run on base and fouled off. That missed by a lot. Now one and two. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Kendall Graveman up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Fouls it off. Still one and two. In there. sets him down on strikes. That was pretty nasty. Pretty big strikeout right there to start this eighth inning. Down one. Any lead off base runner really makes this inning a bit more interesting. But now this offense has to switch from possibly trying to manufacture a run to needing to run into something or just try to string multiple hits together to get a run across the plate. And now the center fielder O’Neal Cruz little chopper rolls foul. fast ball in for a strike and a count is 0 and two. Trying to hold a one-run lead here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Strike three and that’s two in a row. very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. These aren’t fun at bats if you’re a hitter. And I’m so glad I’m retired. Key Brian Hayes, the next pirate to hit. A bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. No ball, one strike. [Music] in the air. Right field. Pulls it in on the run. And that is the inning. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Hennessy Cabrera. And something to be aware of, the long ball has been a little bit of a problem for him this year. Well, one-run game. Now it’s the second baseman, Bla1 Alexander. That one outside and it’s one and0. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. A right-hander appears to be getting loose. Swinging a foul out of play. And he swings through that one. One ball, two strikes. And now two and two. Two ball, two strikes. swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Good late cut for the strike out there. That thing really got in on him and you know the cutter isn’t really a huge swinging miss pitch most of the time because it’s not really meant to move a whole lot. You’re just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact. But that one right there did a whole lot more than that. That was a really good pitch. That one ripped and this one looks like trouble. Now he’ll turn for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Anytime you can drive a ball into the gap the other way. It feels so good. And that’s when you know you’re right where you need to be at the plate. And it’s even better when it gets you extra bases. Love looking in at your dugout and seeing the guys fired up. One out, runner at second. Here’s Catel Marte. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run. And he can’t come up with it into third now. So runners at the corners and one out. The flip to the pitcher covering. Quick recovery from the misplay pays off for the out. Corbin Carroll stands in now for the Diamondbacks. First pitch misses 10 [Music] inside. Just missed. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Two. Fouls. One off. Two a two. Two outs. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Still two and two after the foul ball. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Next offering is downstairs. Lordis Goreel Jr. would be next if they can extend the inning. And he’s homered already, so I’m sure he’d love a chance to do some more damage here. And here’s a 3-2. swaying at a line drive. Base hit it to left field. In comes some insurance as the runner scores from third. It’s an RBI single and they lead by two. Got the job done to put him up by two. Fast ball off the plate a little bit, but a really nice job of going with it. Punched it to the opposite field for that knock. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. And it’s Lordis Goreiel Jr. Ruer takes off. Throw to second. Not in time. He’s there easily. No. One- one foul ball there. Here’s the throw to the plate and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. Well, it’s pretty difficult to throw a base runner out at the plate with two outs on a base hit to the outfield, but an excellent job of coming up with it, getting rid of it quickly, and throwing on the money. That is great technique from start to finish. Nice job to end the inning. Welcome back. And here comes the closer Kendall Braveman. A chance at his first save of the year. So digging in, Jack Sinski. got it started a little too early. Strike one. Hey, look, we’ll see how it factors in. I just can’t emphasize how much that insurance run in the top of the ninth means. I mean, just such a big difference mentally when you’re chasing two runs instead of one. ball. In the air out towards left center and out number one on the grab. Henry Davis will hit next. And that one missing low. One down. Base is empty. And strike one to the catcher. One ball, one strike. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. One, two. That misses. Two and two. The Pirates down by a pair. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Foul ball. Another 2- two upcoming. Rip towards third. Suarez throw to first in time. And the Pirates with only one out left. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Isaiah Ker Falefa, the next pirate to hit. pitch is in there. That’s strike one. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. And there’s a foul ball. One strike away. Right through there. Got him. And that’ll do it. Well, this was a tightly played game. Got a little of everything. Some timely hitting, runs on the board, key pitching, and defense in certain spots. Definitely a fun one to watch. A 53 final score in this one. For Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB The Show, thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
