Did Ichiro have the GREATEST rookie season EVER? 🔥 (2001 MLB highlights with the Mariners!)

What an ovation for Ichiro wearing number 51 on his back. A 353 career hitter over in Japan over the last seven years. And Ichiro gets ready to make his major league debut. This is one exciting young player. Swung on. Grunt ball back up the middle. That’s into center field and Ichiro is on the board with his first major league hit. A sharply stroked shot right back up the middle off Miguel to the shortstop and on into center field. So, Ichiro receives a standing ovation. You can see the Japanese flags waving all over the place down the right field line. Something that I’m sure he has dreamed about comes to fruition here in his first major league game. Here comes the stretch and the pitch to shows a bunt and he does and it’s a dandy up the first baseline. They’ll have to hurry the throw and it’s thrown down the right field line. So, here’s Gon to third base. He’s around third. They will hold him at third as they get it back in. There is speed on display and it turns into an error and it turns into the Mariners having the go ahead run at third base and another man in scoring position at second because Ichiro had the afterburners on on that little bunt up the first base line. Dan Wilson wants a fast ball away. Ground ball base hit into right field. Heading for third is Terrence Long. The throw by Ichiro. Beautiful Peggy Got him. Holy smoke. A laser beam strike from Ichiro to the third baseman David Bell. And Terrence Long is gunned down at third base. What a throw. Two outs. And with that base running by Terrence Long. He keeps Aaron Cely in the ball game. He forgets it’s Ichiro in the outfield. This a ground ball where you can never make this out. This is the tying run. You can’t. He throws a laser low to the ground about 6 ft off. Is that a strike? If you can call that as an umpire, that’s right down the middle. Strike, baby. Look at that arm, people. Terrence Long makes it ill ill advised trying to go to third base. No way he should try this, but this is a beautiful throw. A strike right down the middle like David Bell was a catcher. [Applause] Well, ball deep to right field. Goodbye baseball. Sayanara baseball. Ichiro with his first major league home run here at the ballpark in Arlington. Number one for Ichiro. And it gives the Mariners a 9-7 lead here in the top of the 10th inning. Holy smoke. And I’ll tell you what, that’s a huge a huge home run. If he gets a hit tonight, he will tie his personal all-time best in Japan. He had a 23 gamer twice in Japan. Now he has a 23 gamer here in the United States as he punches it right back up the middle. And again he did it in his second at bat. A shot right back up the middle and the crowd here at Safe Goldfield on their feet. Well again Ichiro stays inside the ball so well right here. This pitch is on the inside part of the plate from a lefty and he just drives it right back up the box. Living on from the Seattle Mariners, center fielder Ichiro Suzuki. This guy is one of the front runners for the MVP award in the American League. Leads the American League in hits with 134. Rolls one over to Helton. Johnson’s not there. Base hit. How can I beat you? Let me count the ways. Ichiro, who’s almost running when he swings the bat, beats Johnson to the bag. Some have clocked Ichiro down the line at 3.75 seconds, which is unheard of. Three and two. His next hit will be his 200. Swung on ground ball right back up the middle. There’s his 200th hit. So he joins only Alex Rodriguez in Mariner history with 200 hits. And for Ichiro himself, that’s only the second time in his professional career that he has had 200 hits. He had 210 hits in 130 games with the Orics Blue Wave in 1994. This is his 132nd game and he has 200 hits at the major league level. Jerry Haristston will be the hitter. He goes to his stretch and peaks back out of Batista and the pitch on the way and a high fast ball bounced into the hole on the right side for a base hit. Here’s Batista around third. The throw to the plate and Batista is meat. He is dead, mate. What a throw by Ichiro. My oh my. He’s done it again. Another Ichiro Saturday night in Seattle. Unbelievable show by our man from Japan. And here in the fifth inning, a zero goes up on the board. Young at second straight up. A-Roded short toward the hole. The pitch is grounded up the middle. A base hit for Ichido. his 227th of the season. He is six hits shy of the American League rookie record held by Shoulless Joe Jackson. All one the infield looking for two. Duke at the belt. The runner goes. The pitch is outside. The throw by Hasselman. It is way late. A stolen base for Ichido. His 49th of the season. First pitch to Ichiro. He slashes it fair. Pass the diving Scott Sheldon at third base. Inside the bag and he is two for three on the night. Duke Sherettes. The runner goes. The pitch is a strike. The throw by Hasselman is high. A tag attempt by A-Rod is late. And Nichiro is in with the steal. His second tonight and his 50th of the year. And he has the record. There’s a base hit number 234. He has the all-time rookie record for hits. And he also has just tied the major league record for singles by a hitter set by Wade Bogs. 187 singles that was set in 1985. So congratulations to Ichiro. Talk about getting two birds with one shot. He just did it right there. What a remarkable year that Ichiro has put together. Another record within his reach with a base hit. It could be the 135th game in which he has a hit. And Ichiro is the new batting champion. I think we can safely say that pitch is drilled deep to right field. He has tied the record with a double at least. Maybe a triple. He’s around second. No, he will hold with a double. So Ichiro 135 games in which he is hit. ties a major league record with Rogers Hornsby of 1922, Chuck Klein of 1930, Wade Fox of 1985, and Derek Jeter of only three years ago. He’s in an 135 game. And there goes Ichiro to third. And with that steal at third base, he is a stolen base champion of the American League this year. Ichiro with number 56. Roger Sadoho of the Detroit Tigers did not play today. Game one of the AL division series. He slams it in right. He is on to start the game for Seattle. Perfect at bat to start for the Mariners. He worked the count to three and two. Saw them all. And here it was a fast ball by Cologne. You It’s hard to get one by him. It’s Icho Mania all over the country and the world. That’s how he does it. He is two for two. Setting up away is Anar Diaz. If you throw it away, he’s magical with that stroke to left field. That ball slapped and that’s fair. Ichiro his third hit. Here’s a shot right over the bag. Jim Tom had no chance. And so Bartullo will face Ichiro Suzuki here with two outs and runners at first and second. This one chopped into right field. A base hit. They’re going to wave the runner around. Here comes the throw to the plate. It’s online but late. Cameron scores and it’s a two to one ball game. An RBI base hit by Ichiro Suzuki has given the Mariners the lead. Really hasn’t seen a pitch he hadn’t liked all year long. Ended the year with more hits than any mere mortal had achieved since 1930. Slapping at that one. Gill hurries it. eight. He has tied Edgar Martinez a division series record. 12 hits in five games.

Ichiro’s 2001 season was SPECIAL! 🤩

  3. As a Mariners fan we do not get to enjoy much historical success on the field. Our ownership prefers money over glory. You may be familiar with the infamous 54% comment by our current GM. Sums up the Mariner experience. This was a special year for M’s fans and I will always remember the joy of having a great team that year. Congratulations Ichiro!

  4. Only two players in MLB history have won both the MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season: Ichiro and Fred Lynn.

  5. Ohtani admired Ichiro and became a left-handed hitter because of him (he originally batted right-handed). If it weren’t for Ichiro, Shohei Ohtani’s success might never have happened.
