🔴LIVE🔴San Diego Padres VS St Louis Cardinals /July 26/ Mlb Envivo/ MLB The show 25
got baseball on the show. It’s the San Diego Padres’s taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. First pitch coming your way next. And now, please welcome your St. Louis Cardinals. Just a little bit away from first pitch. And starting in this one, Miles Michaels and Singy. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Tatiz weights. And another ball. Second pitch of the game. It was a good one, but doesn’t get the strike call. We’ll see how this umpire zone shapes up today. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. [Music] The first batter of the game leaves the yard. His second home run of the series and they grab the lead. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Well, we see this so much more today. Lineups with pop in the leadoff spot and it really puts the pitcher in a tough spot out there where he has to execute right away. You can’t just get over a couple of strikes to settle in, get comfortable, because at the plate, that guy’s looking to do exactly what he just did. Start the game off with a huge bang. Luis Arise stands in. First pitch, just misses. Always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Here’s a batter who for whatever reasons plays better on the road and that should help him here today. The next offering misses two and0. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. And a foul ball pitches in the dirt and that’s ball three. Fights it off. He’ll see another the pitch. And that’s too high. And it’s ball four. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Man at first, nobody out. Now the DH for the Padres’s. Manny Machado right through there for a strike. Arise aboard here at first with nobody out. That one finds the corner. 0 and2 now. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. I’ll hope he gets a mistake. [Applause] Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field and now it’s going to be Jackson Merrill not getting the results he’s wanted at the plate recently under the Mendoza line so far this month that clips the corner. This might be the most pressure you put on this guy today. You got one run in, you got to try to get another one or maybe two. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. First and second here. No outs. [Applause] In the air, left field down the line and that’ll fall for a base hit. The run comes in to score from second. It’s an RBI single and they take a two-run lead. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. takes an inside pitch and just files it over there to left field. And that’s all he had to do is gets up to the outfield grass to push that run across. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. Close but called a ball. Ball one. Sing maybe some nerves getting the best of him in the first. Well, it’s hard to know exactly if it’s nerves or not, but he just doesn’t have it right now. Those hitters on the other side, they’re going to say it’s nerves and use that as a competitive edge to try to jump on him even more. Next offering is fouled back on the ground. The third might be two. Aronado tossed to second and they get him easily at first. It’s a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. left-hand bat. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. In the air to left center. Scott in position. He’s got it. And that is that. But two runs for him and they jump ahead onto the bottom of the first. It’s the Padres’s two and the Cardinals nothing. Back here at Bush Stadium and today’s starter, U Darvish. And Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. Man, you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. And that one pulled foul. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Hard ground ball base knock and the leadoff man aboard. Batting second designated hitter Ivon. And now it’s Ivon Herrera swinging a miss at a slider. Oo, the runner at first needs to be careful right here. He’s dealing with a pickoff artist on the mound. That’s outside and the count is one and one. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And there’s a ball. This guy’s a fun guy to watch take an at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. And a swing and a miss. And one away. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. And here is Alec Burlson. just missed. [Applause] Up and in. And now two and 0. [Applause] Let’s keep the unit alive. Fought off foul. And there’s a fly ball deep right field. And this one looks like trouble. Lead runner touches second, headed for third. Donovan headed for the plate. He’ll score. Picks himself up an RBI. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. [Applause] One out, runner at second. Here’s Contrarus now. Ball one there. inside and the count is two and 0. Foul ball there. Burlson over at second. One down. Next pitch is outside. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. And ball four, two aboard. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Third base, Nolan Aronado. Here’s Nolan Aronado. and fouled off. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. In the air, left fields sizes this one up. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Batting six, the short stop. Here’s a Cardinal lineup now. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus. Alec Burlson. You know, Boo, a guy who hits righties as well as he does. Just an absolute matchup nightmare. I mean, most of the pitching you’ll face is right-handed. So, when you’re hitting over 400 against righties, you’re going to put up some serious numbers. I like his chances in this one. Mason Win next up for the Cardinals. Swing and this one’s bounced to the ground. Eacius fires over to first. They limit the damage here, but a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. And it’s now a two-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here in St. Louis, top of the second and the batter now, Jake Croninworth. Michael back to work. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Croninworth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way. There’s a swing and a drive. back there gone onto the grass hill for a homer. His ninth homer of the year. It’s 3-1. Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. So, up next, Jose Glacius lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. The throw is late and they catch a break as they get a base runner at first. Batting night catcher Elias Diaz man at first and now it’s Elias Diaz and that one fouled off. line drive calls it in. One away. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. So, man aboard, one down, and it’s Tatis at the plate. He’s already homered here in this one. And that one misses up and in. Ball one. And that’s downed away, Chris. With that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Runner on the goal. Swung on. belted and that’s a fair ball. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Put a very nice swing on that pitch right there. Got one to drive and just kept it fair down that right field line and into the corner. And it’s almost impossible to track those down as an outfielder. Luis Araz the next up for the Padres’s worked a walk in his first trip to the plate and that misses one and0. And that’s outside. Ground ball to the right side. Oh, great grab on the dive. Takes it himself and he got him. Nicely done at first for the out. Pedro Pahz coming into the game now as the injury replacement number 43 Manny Machado coming to the plate for the Padres’s after homering earlier in the game. Yeah, and nobody has hit more home runs for the Padres’s franchise than Manny Machado. You’re right about that. It was just last year when Manny passed a member of San Diego’s inaugural team from 1969, Nate Colbert, for the top spot. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. [Music] Two outs. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and two. An at bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Got him. Good job at damage control right there. So, two runs on three hits, including the home run. No errors and one left. Now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Padres’s four and the Cardinals one. Here’s the catcher, Johel Po. Good power, not great in the OBP department. That pitch in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. And the slider just misses. Let’s go. Center field. Merrill under it and there’s one down. Batting eight right. And now the right fielder Jordan Walker. taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. In there and it’s 0 and one. One out. Base is empty to the right side. Arise slings to first in time. batting ninth center fielder Victor Scott the second. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it but pushing the offense aside for just a second. Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. And that skips in the dirt. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times the ball comes off the bat, automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases. And that ends the inning. No runs, no hits, no errors. End of two here at Bush Stadium. It’s the Padres’s four and the Cardinals won. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. I think this is an important inning on the mound for him in this game. He’s got to find a way to settle things down and give some length in this start. And that’s outside. And that’s ball one. You know, these Padres’s doing a good job of putting the ball into play, and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. They’re hitting everything thrown at them. Their contact rate is in the low 90s. It’s like they know what’s coming, and that’s just pretty ridiculous what they’re doing right now. Those numbers are well above the major league average. Swanging a line drive, base hit out into center field. Man aboard on the leadoff single. batting. Tough game for him so far. Boo. Another hit and they’ve just been knocking him around through the first two plus. He’s got to get things back on track. Maybe junk a pitch that isn’t working or he might not last much longer. So, a man aboard. It’s Xander Bogarts now. 0 for one so far. And a popup right side. Foul territory. Brings it in. And there’s one away. Now batting leftielder Gavin Sheets. Stepping in for San Diego. Gavin Sheets fly to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one. That one is absolutely belted. This one’s got a chance. That’s down. One hops off the wall. coming home. He will score. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. This was a really nice swing. Didn’t quite get enough behind it to get it out of here, but once it got over his head in left field, it was extra bases all the way. One out, runner at second. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s. He’s already homerred in this game. hit hard. Base hit. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Runners at the corners here. One away. Jose Glacius gets a chance to hit now. And that one is downstairs. One and one. Clearly, he hasn’t had it in this game. And looks like sooner than later, they’re going to have to go to the bullpen. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, in this situation with a runner on first, less than two outs, some say, “Hey, get the ground ball, double play with two strikes.” Some people say, “Get the strike out.” I think you just execute your pitch. Make the best pitch you possibly can and let the result be whatever it’s going to be. And he makes the catch. That’s out number two. Up next for the Padres’s catcher Elias. Here’s Elias Diaz. He’s 0 for one. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. That one fouled off. And that’s off the inside edge and it’s a ball and a strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. Traffic on the bases with one already in. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Got him. They limit the damage here. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Padres’s five and the Cardinals one set for the bottom of the third. Now it’s the second baseman Brendan Donovan who this batter gets described as a homebody because he loves playing at home and historically his numbers back it up. just missed. Donovan, 28 years old and he was drafted in the seventh round back in 2018. Out towards right center that’s well struck in one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases into second easily with a leadoff double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Great hands on that swing to take the inside pitch and drive it into the gap for the double. It’s easy to spin off a pitch like that, Boo, and can pull that thing foul, but that was perfect. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. Ivon Herrera next up for the Cardinals. climb the ladder with that fast ball. That’s strike one. No outs. Runner on second. Pulls that one foul. Let’s win. Man at second. Pitch misses. And the count one and two. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. The one two on the ground right side throws to first in time. One gone. Bottom of the third inning. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. It’s early, but you still want to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score. That’s exactly what happened. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. Burlson in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Runner on at third. One gone. There’s the sinker at the knees for a strike. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. The two-1 and that clips the inside corner. You’re killing me off off the catcher and rolls away. No advance though. That one down the line and that’s just foul. One away with a runner at third and they’ll do it again. 3-2 swinging a ground ball and it goes just foul. Come on. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Grinding AB right here about to see pitch number 10 and ball four to a board. Pretty good pitch on 3-2 right around the knees but just no help from the umpire. Two on, one out. Pahes will hit next, taking his first at bat of the game after entering on defense. Ball one, no strikes. Runners at the corners. One away here in the last half of the third. Next offering in there for a strike. That’s strike one. The 1-1 is fouled off. Two on, one out. Swing and a miss. Slider got him for strike three. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. Aronado in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Next offering is in for a strike. Donovan on third. Burlson on first with two down and the sweeper is off the plate. Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. Couple of strikeouts with runners on. Sometimes you got to really bear down and he did just that. Nice job of getting out of the jam and out of the inning. All set for the start of the inning. Now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr. I think when you contemplate him as a player, the first thing you think about is defense and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on, that’s going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about. This guy who grew up in big league clubouses. Got to be a nice feeling, Siggy, when your father played in the big leagues and he passes down all that wisdom. I can only imagine the comfort level of being in the ballpark. For those kids who are fortunate enough to have a dad that played in the big leagues, them being on the baseball field. For some, it’s pressure. For them, they feel that they are right at home. on the ground out to Short. Slings it across. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. Up next for the Padres, first base, Luis. Luis Aras digs in now. He’s 0 for one. Liner base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Oh, back in trouble, Boo. And it’s just been like this for him most of the game. They’ve been all over him since his first pitch. And I think he’s got a very short leash right now. Really needs to lock it down here. Manny Machado up to the plate. First pitch misses. Man at first, one away. sliced hard but fouled. [Music] The one-1 hammers that one deep left field and forget it. A two-run shot. Home run number 20 on the year and they add a couple more. It’s 71. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. They thought he could blow a high fast ball by him, but he was ready for it. Look at how quickly he jumped on that pitch. Here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Miles Michael out of the game and the home run really bit him today as he exits on the hook for the loss. New arm coming on after the break. Now pitching Sunonny Gray gets the ball now. Still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs. Kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. One down. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. That’s in there. 0 and one. One down, base is empty. Fast ball for a strike. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Andre Greno preparing to come on if needed. Palante getting cranked up as well. inside. Almost got him. Still only one out here in the inning. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. in the air left side. Burlson. Hauls it in for the out. Now batting short stop Xander Bogarts. Now here’s Xander Bogarts now. Bowl for two in this one. just missed. Two out. Space is empty. Called strike. A sinker at the bottom of the zone. Scored it out into left. Oh, he gloves it. Manny Machado with the blast for the Padres’s. It’s 71. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. And we’re back. John Chami and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Mason Win. Come on. Right through there for a strike. This is one of those times when you want to be aggressive. Go ahead and pitch to contact. Let the defense work behind you. You’ve got a nice comfortable lead. Don’t try to be too fine. Next one is off the play. Two balls in a strike. I can’t play around with him here. It’s a six-run lead at this point. Got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot. Pop foul out of play off to the right. Well, every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs. And that one is lifted in the air. Merryill has this one sized up. Makes the grab. One up, one down. Now batting number six. And up next for St. Louis, Johel Poso. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. The Padres’s up big in this one. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Swang and a miss. Quickly in an 02 count. You’ve got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere. Then you got a chance. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. Fouls it off. Still one and two. You got this. And he hits a ground ball right side. Croninworth slings to first in time. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good executioner. Two down, base is empty. Now it’s the right fielder, Jordan Walker. St. Louis and ball one to the right fielder. And that one’s a little bit low. And that’s ball two. Fast ball for a strike. You can do it. Fouled off left side. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Battling here as he fouls it away. [Music] spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. The right-hander gives up the two out walk. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. He swings and fouls one off. That one misses. And now it’s even one and one. Two outs. That’s towards center. Merryill right there to make the grab. And that’s the third out. The Cards leave one. They’re down seven to one. New inning getting started. So digging in now for San Diego. Gavin Sheets Gray back to work. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. You know these Padres’s digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far, and that tells me they’re seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well. With all those extra base hits, it’s easy to think we’re going to see that trend continue the rest of the game. They seem to be really locked in at the plate. Foul ball still 0 and two. in the air out towards left center. Hauls it in for the out. Now batting second base. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Swing and a miss. 0 and one. That one drifts inside. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Fights that one away. Still one and two. goes down swinging for the strikeout. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Two outs. Base is empty. Next for the Padres’s, Jose Glacius one for two. [Music] Right through there for a strike. Next offering is fouled back. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Two down. Nobody on. Off the mark there and it’s one and two. swing and a miss and he struck him out and it’s a three up, three down inning. Nothing doing here this half. Last half of the fifth coming up, it’s the Padres’s seven and the Cardinals won. Back here in St. Louis, we head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. Well, here’s an interesting stat on Darvish. He has more than a hundred wins in his big league career. The only Japanese-born pitcher with more wins is Hideon Nommo, my former teammate. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Steven Kolic appears to be getting loose. Matsui, a left-hander, also throwing. [Music] lifted in the air down the left side. Tracks it down for the out and there’s one away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He’s saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Herrera the next to hit takes ball one. Swings and misses. And it’s one and one. and a big swing and a miss. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. Next offering way off the plate, the Cardinals with a lot of ground to make up. Last half of inning number five and it remains two and two. Darbish delivers that one missed. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. One down, base is empty. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Foul ball and it remains a full count. [Music] Good job to fight that one off. draws the walk there. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. He’s been in a very giving mood today. Here comes the skipper, and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. That does it for you, Darvish. Had a pretty good outing for him as he leaves with a nice lead. New pitcher when we get back. New arm out of the bullpen, Steven. He’s pitching on two days rest. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. One gone, runner at first. Alec Burlson. Next up for the Cardinals. Come on. And first offering is fouled off. That one pushed foul. And now one and two. Good eye right there. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That’s hard hit on the line. Sheets hauls it in and there’s two away. Now batting first base Pedro. So now it’s the fourhole hitter Pedro Pah. He struck out swinging at his first atbat. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Just missed. Go cars. Go. Next pitch is outside. Here off of first with two away. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Got to love the resiliency showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Here’s Nolan Aronado. And that misses. And that is ball one. That clips a corner. Come on, St. Louis. Hammered down the right side but foul [Applause] swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Tatis pulls it down and that is that. back here at Bush Stadium. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Stepping in, Elias Diaz. Diaz in his ninth season. 34year-old vet. He joined the team as a free agent. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. John King, a lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. Ley, the right-hander, also getting loose. Late with the swing there. Gosh, a little late on that breaking ball. I don’t think he recognized it out of the hand. Just a little tardy. Going to have to regroup here. Outside low. One and two to count. fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatiz Jr. He swings and misses at the first pitch. 0 and one singi. This is a guy that grew up in big league clubouses and it’s something that you see throughout the game. Sons whose fathers also played the majors. Strike two. Yeah. And beyond that, all the other men in those clubouses that sort of take you under their wing as a son or a nephew and show you some of the tricks of the trade. It’s just invaluable that type of experience. Aronado to first in time. Two quick outs to open the top of the six. Now batting the first two down, base is empty. Luis Arazz the next up for the Padres’s. Come on. Come on. Foul ball. [Music] That’s off the inside corner and it’s two and one. Two down, nobody on. And we’re the top half of the sixth on a line base hit. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that. But so far, I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. That one found hard the other way. Next offering upstairs. Two outs. That one misses now. Two balls in a strike. That one ripped right center field. Hops over the wall and that’s an automatic double. That was loud contact and a no doubt doubled off the bat. I didn’t know it was going to land in the bullpin though and he’s really improving his accuracy out there. It’s almost like he tried to do it. Next up is the cleanup spot for the Padres’s. Jackson Merrill now will bullet to second base, but he’s got it to end the inning. Padres’s leave a pair and they’re on top seven to one. bottom of the sixth inning. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Mason Win up the middle and that one finds its way through. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Next to hit, Johel Poso swing at a line drive. That’s a base hit into center field. And now runners at the corners. Nobody out. Now batting rightielder. So they’re at the corners now. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. Slashed foul down the right side. And that’ll hook off into the seats. Go. All right. Cardinal. Come on. swing and a pop off in foul ground and out number one on the grab. Now batting center fielder Victor Scott the second two on with one out. And now here’s the speed threat outfielder Victor Scott. He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors. out towards right center field. Merrill sizing this one up. Squeezes it. Runner tagging from third. He scores on the sack fly. It’s seven to two. In that situation, you’re looking to get something up in the zone that you can put in the air. Worst case scenario, a sacrifice fly to drive in that runner from third. So, the lineup flips over. Now it’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. Donovan, first pitch and he just misses. Evidently not too impressed with that call and it feels like he got squeezed on the outside corner. So he’s making his case. You got to be careful to pick your spots in terms of showing your frustration with the umpire. And he felt this was his time. And that’s in for a strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Poso the runner at first with two gone. Foul ball still a one and two count. tried to check his swing there. Appeal to third and he went around. Not an easy call there, but that puts an end to the inning. So they pick up a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. We’re through six full. It’s the Padres’s seven and a Cardinals two. Now, welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, John King. Well, they need someone to stop the bleed and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. It stops. Bogarts in the box now. No balls in a strike. on the ground right side tosses to first and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. Good fade and sinking action of that change up got that hitter to roll over. Gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s and the first pitch misses for ball one. Had a breaking ball misses outside. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. And you know it’s going to finish well off the plate now. Three and 0. Lined and that’s a base hit. And the Padres’s have a man aboard with one out. Are you kidding me? Well, patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count. I could watch base hits like that one all day long and so could every hitting coach in the league. Just a nice line drive into center field. Runner on at first with one gone. Here’s the second baseman, Jake Croninworth on the ground. Could be two. One at second. On to first. Double play. And that’s the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Padres’s seven and a Cardinals two. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Ron Marinacio. And you know, bullpen guys can struggle sometimes when they’re called upon with big leads because it just doesn’t have the same intensity as a tight game. So, we’ll see how sharp he is. Your mental toughness matters in situations like this as well. And now Ivon Herrera. Herrera. And first off is fouled off. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. Hey, you got this. Fouls it back with two strikes. Little bit low. Excellent arm action on that two strike change up. Just missed. Man, he wanted that call. swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strike out. And now Alec Burlson Burles and the first pitch misses for ball one. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Adrien Morahon, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Number 66, warming up as well. And that’s off the inside edge. Two balls, no strikes. Inside, just missed. Next offering is fouled back. Base is empty. One away here. The bottom of the seventh. Hard hit to third. Throws across the diamond. Two up, two down. Now batting first base Pedro. Two outs. Base is empty at the plate. Pedro Pah. Fast for a strike. A change up missing and one and one and that one clips the corner. Swings through it and that’s a strikeout. One, two, three go to Cardinals. They’re down five. It’s seven to2. We’re in the top of the eighth. Stepping in for San Diego, Jose Glaciius. King back to work. base hit and a good start to the inning. Elias Diaz now at the plate 0 for three in this one and first offering is fouled off. Glacius gets his lead at first with nobody out. Swing and a base hit. Lead runner to second. So two on and nobody out. Now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. And the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. And that drops in for a strike. First and second, no outs. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Comes up empty. at strike two. That one the other way. That’s a base hit. Headed for the plate. The throw in. Not in time. He’s safe at the plate. And it’s now a six-run lead. Luis Arazz the next to hit. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. No outs. Runners at first and second. [Applause] line drive out towards left field. That’s a base hit. Now a long throw home. It’s offline. The run comes in and they’re pulling away up by seven now. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runscoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Here comes the skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. John King done for the afternoon and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. New pitcher for the Cardinals, Kyle Ley. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Here’s Manny Machado. And it may be a long shot, but a triple here will give him the cycle. Late on that fast ball. A one down on the ground to the left and it’s just fouled. That was close. That misses the zone. And that’s ball one. Base runners at second and third here. No outs. Fouls it off. Still one and two. You could see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. One away. Oh, that’s a frustrating at bat right there. Big opportunity and just missed it. I know he wanted to do some damage. Next guy will have to pick him up. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s, Jackson Merrill. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Second and third one away. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. [Applause] inside. Three balls, two strikes. Ground ball right side. Out number two. And another run comes in. Plenty of offense in this one, Singy. I guess you’d say kind of what we expected, though. Well, this was a game looking at the pitching matchup where you expected offense to score and not as lopsided as this. Um, but yeah, you definitely expected to see some offense coming up. Bulgart stands in now and watches strike one. Establishing both ends of the zone is critical. Most times guys are want to get hitters out down, but if you can get them to look up, get a called strike, that’s going to make that strike zone a lot bigger. Two outs. Fights that one away. And the count remains 0 and2. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Swing and a popup. Aronado under this one. And that’ll do it. Yes, that’s right. Three runs on, four hits, no errors, and one left on. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Padres’s 10 and the Cardinals two. This game’s a bit of a blowout, Sigy. Let’s talk about something random. Let’s do it. Singy, where do you stand on the wave? Well, the wave of star players in MLB or the wave around this ballpark. the wave around the ballpark. I think it’s a little outdated. I’m more of a Thunder Sticks guy. And that’s not outdated. That’s off the inside corner. And it’s one and one. As far as ballpark food, one of my favorite places is San Francisco. Garlic fries. Yo, garlic fries. And you got the lobster roll out there in the outfield if you want to make the walk all the way out there. It’s great though broadcasting a game with that zoo breath where you could just I mean absolutely levitate some people with your with your breath. What do we got? The crab fries in Philadelphia. Is that right? Yep. And then it’s been a long time for me. Boogs barbecue at Park. I knew you’d go there. That’s right. Yeah. Anyway, you can work in your name, huh? That’s right. Ripped on the ground is second. sends it to first. One up, one down. Fast ball groove right down the middle. Usually a lot of damage done with that pitch. A hard grounder, but he wanted to get that ball in the air, maybe drive it into the gap. Mason Win next up for the Cardinals. One for three. Fast for a strike. The Cards with a lot of ground to make up here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Next pitch is outside. Swings through that one out in front that time. one and downstairs. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Boogie just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Hoso in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Next offering is fouled back. The one-1 is fouled off. St. Louis. And down on strikes he goes. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Nothing doing there for St. Louis. And the deficit stays at eight. It’s 10-2. Back here in St. Lewis leading off Gavin Sheets swinging a foul straight back. He’s someone you’ll notice that attacks hitters with that high velocity slider. It is definitely not going to be mistaken for a slur outside. One ball, one strike. Movement in the bullpen for the Cardinals. Andre Palante up and loosening in the pen. Greno also throwing. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Scott sizes this one up, corrals it, and there’s one down. When the velocity is living in the upper 90s and maybe even touch triple digits, then you’re throwing a slider in that same range. Very difficult because the hitter wants to hit the fast ball first and foremost. And when you put that little wrinkle in it like he does, it’s really devastating. Croninworth stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Base is empty. One away. You’re in the top of the ninth. That one pushed to the left and fouled. That one finds a corner. One and two. and misses inside. Up and in. And the count is filled up. Base knock center field. Jose Glacius getting ready to hit and first offering is fouled off. Now one out to right. Walker hustling after it. Nice grab on the run. Two down. Those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Now the catcher up to hit Elias Diaz. Swinging a foul out of play. and he can’t come up with it. Still finds a way to get off a throw and that is that. One hit, one left. 891 do up in the bottom of inning number nine. It’s the Padres’s 10 and the Cardinals two. Now pitching for back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Adrien Morome. Oh, he’s having an excellent season so far. Erra is under two. Lot of flexibility coming out of the bullpen. So digging in Jordan Walkerielder goes 5′ 11 in 26 years old and he was born in Cuba. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Next offering misses. Ball one in the air out towards right center. Tatis moving under it. Puts it away for the out. One down. Now batting center fielder Victor. And now the center fielder Victor Scott. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. This guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. That one finds the zone and that’s strike one. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. Slapped foul. The Padres’s up big in this one here in the last half of inning number nine. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. that misses and a count one and two. Gets under it and pops it up makes the grab. Two down. Up next for the Cardinals. Second base. One out left for the Cardinals. Now it’s the second baseman Brendan Donovan. There’s the strike and a base hit right there. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Now batting the hitter, Ivon Herrera will hit next. Herrera and first offering is fouled off. Two outs on the ground and foul ball. Morome is just one strike away. Swang and a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance. Gone straight into the visitors bullpen. Home run number 10 on the year. It’s 104. [Applause] It’s really impressive how he’s able to take an outside fast ball, get around it, and hit it with authority to the pull side. Most guys are popping up weakly to the opposite field. Base is empty with two away. Now the left fielder, Alec Burlson. And there’s a foul ball. Two down. Nobody on. They’re down to their final strike. Next pitch misses and the count is one and two. fights it off. He’ll see another base is empty, two away, but two runs are in. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Well, they gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone. I’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again. the 2-2. Got him. And that’s the ball game. I’d say you’re lying if you say you don’t feel a fivegame losing streak. This W definitely helps them relax a little bit and take some of the pressure off from it going to a six, seven, or even an eightgame losing streak. 104 is how it ends.
