Steelers rookies off to HOT start, Jalen Ramsey makes his mark, Jonnu Smith back | Steelers Rewind

What’s going on everybody? Welcome back to Steelers Training Camp Rewind here from the trope. I am still over here at St. Vincent College. We are over with day three and wow was it hot. Um folks, it was 100° on that field. Um it was really 92, but the real field temperature was over uh the rain that dropped yesterday and today took all the the humidity straight up into the sky. It absolutely felt like a scorcher here today. There were multiple guys that just had to take breaks with, you know, they had cramps, some heat related issues. Um man, it was brutal out there today. This is why Mike Tomlin moved training camp back to 155 instead of 10:30 like it was last year. He got his heat related stuff. Some of these guys make it look easy though. For example, Jaylen Warren and Caleb Johnson. These two guys are when Mike Thomas says they’re highly conditioned. Those are the two I think of. They just keep getting reps, reps, reps, reps and acting like it doesn’t affect them. And let’s start there with the running backs because I think there is a chip on both those guys shoulders for different reasons. for Caleb Johnson is to kind of try and prove that he can be a guy that’s great in pass pro, a guy that can catch the ball of the back field. And he continues to showcase he’s got some legitimately solid hands. Now pass is not going to come until Tuesday when I think they’re going to have backs on backers and that should be a lot of fun to watch. It always is. I love backs on backers and Caleb Johnson’s really looking forward to it too. Um he said he’s worked out in Arizona so you know a lot of 110°ree heat days. So these days don’t seem even as brutal as those to a degree. Humidity is probably a little more here. Um but dry heat in Arizona also can be brutal when you’re working out in it. Um so that’s why he’s so highly conditioned. Jaylen Warren is just an animal man. Um what a great pass protector he is. So this running back competition and this camaraderie and even throw Kenny Gainwell in there. It’s really fun. Gainwell has been kind of used as like this pseudo receiver running back. I think it’s been fun. Um, I really am intrigued and excited about watching this rookie class in general because Dererick Harmon and Jack Sawyer are having good camps. Sawyer is somebody who I think is just looking comfortable. Doesn’t look like a rookie. Um, he’s looks savvy. He’s won in multiple ways. Beat Troy Falanu today on a really nice kind of pu push and pull. Uh, kind of pulled Falanu down. was really good and Falcano’s been good so far. So for Sawyer to get that kind of perked me up. Um I was like, “Ooh.” Um because TJ Watt had a vets day off. Sawyer got a lot more reps and even got some first team reps and and had that really solid rep. Um he’s just been solid, man. Derek Carman has been a man possessed. Um got a sack in seven shots that wanted for the defense. Uh he’s had multiple TFLs um in the run team periods. Kill’s just a flash. she he just seems like somebody that is not phased by the by the level that he has gone to. So he’s been really good. Dante Kent got a pick today in seven on seven. Um that was impressive on a seam ball. Will Howard seems to be getting in. So So the rookie class kind of looks fine. Ya Black, haven’t seen a ton of him. He’s a run stopper, so you’re not going to see a ton of them, but but he has looked fine so far. Uh he had one rip where he just like bulldoed straight through Gareth Warner today which was insane. Uh but we know that ya black is strong so not a surprise. Jaylen Ramsey got his first pick today. Uh picked off a pass intended for Johnny Smith from Aaron Rodgers. Uh so that’s good to see. Dary Slay had a day off. So we saw more Jaylen outside today and he looked good in manto man. Um Chuck Clark has had a first solid first two days. He’s got a really nice PBU downfield uh on a what it was an underthrow ball from Mason Rudolph looking for Roman Wilson. Wilson could have caught it, but if it was in front of him would have been a touchdown, but Clark good job to come in and swat it out. Um so a nice play there. Um the other thing that I thought really stuck out today um was kind of the communication on defense. Like they’re loud. Um they are kind of talking through things. They are emphasizing things. If you don’t respond, there’s yelling going on. the communication issues that they had last year have definitely spurned something in them to make sure that that doesn’t happen again and you can see the motivation leaking through onto the field. That’s an important thing for this team. The other thing is we got some offensive scheme to talk about because Jonnu Smith was out there today and I’ve talked about this. I’ve been interested to see how they would use Jonnu the whole time and with him kind of getting in a team, not fully playing a team but some more. We saw them in 13 and 12 personnel in condensing formations and spreading them out. Uh they were in 13 personnel, the three tight end sets in empty at times. They were condensed sometimes. Um sometimes they had DK Metaf, sometimes they had uh Robert Woods out there depending on what they kind of wanted to do. Um but they are going to be a team that kind of spreads you out and tries to dictate your personnel to find mismatches and if you don’t match their personnel, they’re going to burn you and and I think that’s something that they’re looking at as well. All right, folks. Make sure to like, comment, subscribe, turn on the notification bell for more.

  1. I have never had any questions about captain jack he is going to be good. I want to see Howard get reps he is this teams future. They are going to draft a qb next year when they should draft a first rd Tackle because Howard is going to bench any QB they draft.

  2. Im sorry B but that is an absurd statement to say Howard was no better at OSU then he was a Kansas State i understand that is your college but that is an absolutely rediculous statement.

  3. Do they have some kind of cooling system built into NFL helmets for these very hot days? If not, someone should develop that technology. Glad to hear Sawyer is looking great, and that communication is improving on defense. Thanks for the detailed updates, Nick! Great job!!
