MLB LIVE🔴 Arizona Diamondbacks vs Pittsburgh Pirates – Jul 27, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
Alongside Chris Singleton, I’m John Shami. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Arizona Diamondbacks going up against the Pittsburgh Pirates. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. So, almost ready to get underway. And on the mound in this one, Mitch Keller. And for some reason, he’s not quite as effective here in front of his home crowd, Chris. Yeah, Boo. And the fans are well aware of that. For him, he’s got to just not press and go out there and say, “Hey, I’m just treating this like any start. home, on the road, it doesn’t matter. My job is to focus on that catcher mitt, attack hitters, and just try to move through a ball game. So, if he can find that kind of focus, doesn’t matter where he’s pitching because he has good enough stuff to go out there and win a ball game. First pitch 135. And that misses at one and one, one strike. hit on the ground to the right side. Steps on first for the outing. Time to take a look at the Diamondback’s lineup. Had a big part of it. A guy with a great track record. Randall Gritic. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Let’s go. Corbin Carroll the next to hit takes ball one [Music] and a foul ball on the ground right side and he can’t come up with it. still finds a way to get off a throw and save. Couldn’t recover from the misplay. Looked like a pretty routine play. Just couldn’t get it to stick in the glove as he gets tagged with the error. Should have been two outs in the inning, but now they have to work around it and get two more. Runner on first with one gone. Now the left fielder Lordis Goreel Jr. and that one fouled off. Carol over at first with one away. Cracks his bat and pops him up. They get the tag on him and that’s the second out. four is designated AU. So the go-ahead run in scoring position and next will be the cleanup hitter AU Suarez. Another solid power season right through there for a strike. 0 and one. That’s inside ball. [Music] That one outside and it’s two and one. [Music] Just missed. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitters count. Josh Naylor in the OD circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. So now two on and two outs. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there anyhow. First baseman Josh Naylor. First and second, two outs. And now it’s Josh Naylor. Now a pop up on the infield. Pays. And that is that. Diamondback stranded pair. And now the Pirates will get their first opportunity. No score. Back after this on the show. Back here at PNC Park, starting in this one, Eduardo Rodriguez. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. a lot more guys striking out today. But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. Spencer Horowitz, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. And the one in the air left field down the line tries to make the play but it’s fouled. [Applause] [Music] taps softly to the right side and he handles it himself for the out. We take a check of the Pirates lineup put together by manager Derek Shelton and Singy against the southpaw on the mound. The skippers loaded this lineup with righty bats. Certainly following the conventional wisdom here, Boo, that extra split second can make a big difference for a hitter. So, these righty batters will need to take advantage and make this tactical move pay off. Nick Gonzalez in the box here lets that one go for and that is out of play. One out. Base is empty. just missed. Two-1. That one hit the knees for a strike. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. And there’s a ball. [Music] He goes down looking batting third. Two down. Base is empty. Brian Reynolds here. Reynolds. That one not close. Ball one. They say you win. One and one. Let’s go. This one in the air. Here makes the catch. Inning over. Nothing doing here for Pittsburgh. Scoreless after one. Second inning set to go. Now it’s the right fielder, Randall Gritick. Gritic measures 6’2 in 33 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. Mitch Keller back to work. Outside low and that’s ball one. [Music] Nope. That’s in. Time to check on our umpires. Earl Hrix calling balls and strikes. Yeah, well liked umpire Boo. Pretty consistent with his zone. So if you’re familiar with him and how he works, you won’t get too surprised by anything. Sometimes he’ll give a little bit off the corner, but nothing too crazy at all. Out in front and foul to the left side. What about some nos? Like you can’t call the umpire blue the way you do in little league or high school, right? Yeah. Even in the minor leagues, you’ll learn quickly uh you call the umpire blue, you better learn his name. And uh that’s just part of being a professional player and even a major league player. And that one misses up and in. And now it’s three and two. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubouses where they have pictures of all four guys, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Heraldo Pomo in the box now. No balls in a strike. Second inning here. No score. Come on, let’s get the ground ball. [Applause] Rightander kicks. Steals the short stop. takes the ball. Swing and he breaks his back. Brings it in. One away. So, up next, Bla1 Alexander. Double play and there’s the strike. [Music] Foul ball there. Strike him out. Foul ball left side. And he’ll see another [Applause] swings and misses. Struck him out. Well, he really filled up the strike zone in that at bat until that final pitch. And as a hitter, you sense that they’re coming after you. not dancing around the strike zone. They want to attack and so you kind of get into swing mode and you have to protect the plate. That’s when you become really susceptible to something that makes you chase and that’s exactly what happened right there. Jose Herrera stands in now for the Diamondbacks. That’s off the inside corner and it’s one and0. Two gone, but the go ahead run is at first here in the top of the second and that one is lifted in the air. Drops into the glove and that’s the third out. So no runs, no base hits, no errors and one left. We go to the bottom of inning number two. We’re tied nothing. Nothing. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning at the plate for Pittsburgh. Tommy Fam. Tommy Fam. And that drops in for a strike. The 01 is outside and it’s a ball and a strike and a base hit. Had a good start to the inning. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. Come on, let’s keep it going. And a first pitch fast is in for a strike. I know it’s obvious, but you just can’t miss Cruz when he’s on the field. I’ve never seen a player like him. I mean, he’s 6’7, weighs 220 lbs, and is the tallest shortstop in the history of Major League Baseball. Swang and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. Base knock right. Lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Back to back singles. Nice line drive to the full side right there. But he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Now batting key Brian Hayes check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. 01 [Music] [Applause] [Music] Next offering is downstairs. Way to lay off that pitch down and a count one and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. No outs. Runners at first and second. Ground ball right side could be two. the flip to second, back to first, and that is a double play. Really nice double play turn right there. And it all started with that sweet glove flip on the feed to second. You know, these middle infielders, they spend a lot of time honing that glove work so it just becomes like second nature. I think you also have to have a really good glove that’s broken in that’s not too large so that you can have a feel for that baseball and be able to flip it like you’re bare-handed. Now it’s Alexander Canario. That pitch gets the corner. Go and one. [Music] That one’s upstairs. Ball one. And a swing and a miss. I think he was sitting off speed to count. Swings through it for the K. went back to the fast ball and it was effective. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top half of the third inning. And now it’s the switch inning second baseman Catel Marte. And that’s outside. One and0. There’s the strike. This guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. [Applause] Fights it off. You’ll see another. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Outside low and the count is even. Two and two. Oh, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. That one ripped [Applause] and one hops off the wall. Should be extra bases into second easily with a leadoff double. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Got a good pitch to drive. Stayed short with his bat path to the ball and caught it out front and he stayed long in his follow through. That’s how you split the gap and that’s pretty much a double every time. runner in scoring position, no outs. And now the center fielder, Corbin Carroll and ball one. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and hardly order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get going. [Music] There’s the strike of the knees and it’s one and one. One and one. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. That one way inside. caught him looking for the K. So the go ahead run in scoring position. Guriel now at the plate. He’s 0 for one. hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Marte the runner at second with one away. Strike three and that’s two in a row. So backto back strikeouts now and they still haven’t managed to do anything with the leadoff double. Yeah Boo, you just don’t want to get careless here. You’ve done a really good job to get two outs after that leadoff double as you mentioned and just got to execute your pitches and it’s a non-issue. Hey Heno Suarez up to the plate now. He reached out to walk his first time. That one drifts inside. Got the ball. All right. Pirates in the air to left center. Fam sizing this one up. Makes the catch. And that is that one left for the Diamondbacks. And we’re still knotted at zero. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now the catcher comes up to him. Henry Davis. Davis. [Applause] And that’s in for a strike. on the ground to the left and that’s just fouled outside low ball one. That’s inside. [Applause] swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field and there’s one away batting ninth the short stop here is Ker Fa he’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching the lefties however give him a little bit more trouble Fast ball for a strike. It’s 0 and one. There’s the strike. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something. Off speed away. One down. Base is empty. Hatson misses. It’s a strike out. Well, that was the cutter down and in right there. And typically, if you’re going to have a chance with the pitch, if it’s down, that’s your best chance of doing anything with it. It’s kind of like a mini slider, just with a little less vertical movement. But still, that one tied him up and he couldn’t get the barrel to it. Back to the top of the lineup now. Here is Spencer Horowitz in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. 0 and one. swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field and that extends the inning. Now batting Nick Gonzalez the next to hit struck out looking his first time. Gonzalez [Applause] Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that is ball one. [Music] swaying and a tapper to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Boom. That’s staying within his game right there. I mean, this speedster gets the infield single and now he’s on base to possibly do some damage. I love seeing what guys like this can do to disrupt the game once they get in a position to do so. First and second, two outs. Up next for the Pirates, Ryan Reynolds. And that’s ball the inside edge. And that’s ball one. [Applause] That’s a little bit low. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Two on, two outs. Fought off foul. Still tied at zero. Last of the third. [Music] Inside and now three and one. Tommy Fan in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Two outs. That one hooked. Foul. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball on a line. Snags it on the run and that will end the inning. Pirates strand a couple and we are still scoreless. Back here in Pittsburgh, John Shami with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth, Josh Naylor. Here comes the pitch. That one fouled off. [Music] Blind drive base hit. So runner aboard to start the inning. Now batting right fielder Randall British. Dominant performance for him today. Boo. Just two hits allowed so far. No runs across either. And he’s had an answer for just about every hitter he’s faced. So I don’t think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much. Randall Grichic now worked to walk in his first trip to the plate. That catches the corner. There’s the strike. Naylor gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Pitch misses and the count is one and two. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Justice, man. Oh, man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Swinging a high-fly ball out there towards left field. Coming on is Fam to make the play. just pull off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. And now the shorts stop. Peraldo Peromo 0 for one so far. Fouled off. He was late. Pirates. And that is cut out and miss. And it’s nothing in two. Another 02 count right here. Pitcher just in the driver’s seat. He can go anywhere he wants to go right here. Swings and misses. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Here’s the third baseman. Bla1 Alexander struck out swinging his first time in there at the knees for a strike. No balls, one strike. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first. Top half of inning number four. Next offering is in for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Out towards left center. Fam sizes this one up. He makes the grab and that’ll do it. One left for Arizona. Still no score. Back here at PNC Park, ready to go. Bottom four. Here’s Tommy Fam. Fam. takes low for ball one. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. [Music] Next offering in there for a strike. One and two. Fast ball is outside. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming and that one missing low. Really good take especially with two strikes [Applause] in the air left field. Guriel has it sized up. One up, one down. Now batting center fielder O’Neal Cruz the next pirate to hit one for one with a single so far. So O’Neal Cruz is named after Paul O’Neal. That was his father’s idol in baseball. So he named his son O’Neal. In 2022, they finally met each other when the Pirates played the Yankees in New York. And I’m sure that was a moment that O’Neal Cruz will never forget. One ball, one strike. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. [Music] The 1-1 is fouled off. All tied up. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. [Music] And O’Neal is struck out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time a little anxious. Kean Hayes will hit next. He hit into a double play his first time up and that misses the ball. And that’s ball one. swing and a liner foul off to the right. And now two and one. Two out. Base is empty. That’s outside and the count is three and one. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. [Music] And that one fouled off. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. Oh, a great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. Canario stands in now and watches strike one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. And that one is downstairs now. One and two. [Music] battling here as he fouls it away. [Music] That’s off the mark and it’s two and two and a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. No runs on, no hits, no errors and one left on. We’re headed to the fifth. No score. And we’re back. New inning getting started now. The Dback’s catcher, Jose Herrera. Keller back to work. inside corner for a strike. You know, these Dbacks doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient bats out of them. They haven’t produced a run yet, but the pitch count for the starter is starting to climb. So, they’re hoping that starts to pay off soon. And I think they’re in a good spot thanks to their pitching. But no one would be shocked if this offense strings something together to take the lead. The next pitch misses at a count one and two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Ground ball up the middle and that chance handled there to beat him by an eyelash. impressive backhand stop, but he had a little trouble getting rid of it and had to take that extra step which could have cost him. But good job to make sure he got a good handle on it and he got off a good strong throw to still get the out. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte [Applause] in the air pretty deep out to center field. Cruz settles under it, makes the grab, and there’s two gone. Now batting. This is Corbin Carol for two in this one. Singing, you got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. That one catches the zone and that is strike one. He’s so solid. calms the heart rate of the pitcher and the manager when the ball goes up in the air and you just automatically assume that it’s an out every time it’s hit in the air. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boo, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield way inside. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another [Music] got and it’s Three up, three down in it. Still nothing on the scoreboard for him after five. And we still have no score. And welcome back to the ballpark. We head to the bottom of the fifth and here is Henry Davis. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. We talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases, despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. And that is downstairs. One and one. Remember Mark Cay was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Yeah. Yeah. And I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Up next for the Isaiah Connor Fippa up to the plate. Struck out swinging his first time. [Applause] Connor Falefa measures 5′ 10 in 195 lbs and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2013. Right side. Oh, nice play to his knee. The throw and they get the out. Well, he looks so comfortable making that play. Dives, comes up with it and then from one knee like he’s just playing catch with his kid. Nice throw across the diamond at first. So, two down now and here is Spencer Horowitz. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. That one a little bit high. And that’s ball two. That one out to right. Pauls it into Indiana. Sixth inning coming up. Still nothing on the scoreboard. Back here in Pittsburgh. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s the left fielder. Lordis Goreel Jr. gets the call. That’s strike one. Man, I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Guriel gets a piece. [Music] That’s to third. Sends it across to first and a quick out number one. Now batting the designated hitter, Aueno Suarez. Auheno Suarez up to hit now. Scoreless here, but now he’s got to deal with a guy who’s got some power. Got to be careful when you’re talking about a hitter with this type of slug and these type of home run totals. [Music] One down, base is empty and a foul ball. Going to count one and two. [Music] Next offering misses down and away. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. That one misses. Three and two now. Countsful. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Well, he’s normally going to fill up the strike zone and really limit base runners, but his command in this one just seems off out there. A lot more walks than he’s used to giving up. Go ahead run on base. Here’s Josh Naylor. One for two. There’s the strike. Bullpen action for the Pirates. Number 47, the rookie right-hander is getting loose. Ferguson getting loose as well. [Applause] And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Ball one there. That’s a really good take. And now two and two. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. And that’s who we’ll just win. It’s a strike out. Randall Gri digs in now. He’s 0 for one. [Applause] First pitch misses. [Music] Fast ball for a strike. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. Right through there for a strike. Suarez off the first with two away. misses. Two and two, [Applause] two outs. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. pops over the wall and that’s an automatic double. Off the bat, I thought they were going to score their first run of the game and that feels like a tough break, but look at the bright side. Really good contact at the plate and now they’re working with not just one, but two runners in scoring position. So, they’d love another base hit right here. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Mitch Keller will depart. And a nice effort out of him, no doubt. New arm coming on. We’ll be back for that in a moment. Now pitching Pirates with a new arm of the mound. Carmen Majinski left-handed batter at the plate and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So this seems like a calculated move. So two on with two away. And the batter now Heraldo Peromo. There’s the strike. Let’s go. [Applause] And that one almost hit him. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] up the middle tosses to first and that is that. So a job well done from the Buckos bullpen. 234 two up in the home half of the six. No score. [Applause] Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Anthony Dclifani. And he’s been hit pretty hard at times this year, so he’s looking for better right now. Giving up more than a hit per any. Here’s the second base, Nick Gonzalez. Second baseman, Nick Gonzalez. tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. You know, these Pirates really impressed me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. They really made that opposing starter work. Knocks it down. He makes the throw, but it’s not in time. And they don’t get an out on the play. Couple of hits in a row for him here. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. So digging in Ryan Reynolds Dclani checks the runner. Gonzalez back in on a dive in there and it’s own one. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column, but with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming with a go-ahead run at first here in the bottom of the sixth. That one inside and the count is one and one. One and one [Applause] on the ground to third. Might be two. Goes to second for one. And that’s two. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leagers. They make tough plays. Look simple. Damn. Tommy Fan now at the plate. He is singled and he is fly to left and first offering is fouled off. [Music] Swinging and a ball popped up. Marte makes the catch and that will end the inning. So digging in, Bla1 Alexander, third base, Bla1 Alexander. Right through there for a strike. Oh, and one. That’s a ball. One. in the air center field. Cruz settles underneath it, pulls it down, and he makes the catch. And there’s one down now. Batting catcher, Jose. And now the switch and catcher, Jose Herrera. Let’s win. Come on. And that misses. And it’s one and0. All tied up here in the top half of inning number seven. That one missed in the air. left field down the line and it stays fair. Well, that was one of those high percentage advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Here’s Catel Marte, one for three and fouled off. [Applause] tried to check his swing. Appeal to third and yes he did. He went around and he’ll shoot two. Swing and a miss. struck him out of the slider and there’s two gone. Well, there he gets the slider in on his hands and it just eats him off. It’s hard to get the bat around on a pitch like that in tight. You just feel like you’re crowded on the inside part of the plate. Can’t get any extension. That’s one he definitely should have laid off of. Here’s the center fielder, Corbin Carroll. 0 for three in this one. And that one just misses. A ball and no strikes. Ball, no strikes. Two gone. The possible go ahead run at first. Not close with that one. Ball two. And delivers outside. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Lordis Goreel Jr. in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And there’s ball four with two outs. The go-ahead run is at second base. That just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of his own. Come on. [Applause] Guriel in the box now. Takes strike one. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. That misses and it’s one and one [Music] [Music] on the ground to third. Paige rolls across the diamond. They miss a big chance to take the lead here late. So they strand a pair. Seventh inning stretch time and we still have no score. Digging in, O’Neal Cruz for the Pirates, center fielder, O’Neal Cruz. And the first pitch misses for ball one. You can expect this hitter to be looking for something on a TE. He can get up in the air and untie this ball game. That one’s in there and now it’s even one and one. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch you’ll see in this at bat to hit. had a swing and a line drive out of right field and there’s one down. Good piece of hitting right there. Nice hard line drive to the outfield. You’re trying to get on base, represent that go ahead run. Can’t hang your head on that at all. Ke Ryan Hayes the next pirate to hit first off and it just misses. [Applause] [Music] And another ball. [Music] And that’s through there for a strike. [Music] Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. That one to first. He takes it on his own. And that quickly two away. Now batting right fielder Alexander Canario. Alexander Canario the next pirate to hit who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. on the outside corner. Strike one and ball one. That’s good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Two down, nobody on and a swing and a miss. Three up, three down. Inning over. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. Eighth inning coming up, no score. So, out of the paint comes the right-hander number 47 on for his 20th appearance of the year. Number 47. And now the DH AU Suarez hitter. He’s a big strong guy. Can untie this game with one swing. [Applause] And that one fouled off [Applause] [Applause] 0 and two now. Good eye in that spot. Activity in Pittsburgh’s bullpen. Dennis Santana loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. Popped up to the left in foul ground. He’s under it. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Got the pitch that he wanted. just a little bit quick. Front shoulder open, backside collapsed a little bit, and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. Josh Naylor stands in now for the Diamondbacks. [Applause] Bottom of the zone and a cold strike. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the eighth. The next offering misses. It’s a ball in two strikes. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. just tried to overthrow that [Applause] [Music] [Applause] And there’s a ball. That missed by a lot. And a full countdown. Randall Gritic in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Fouled off again and it remains three and two. [Applause] That one is absolutely belted. It’s a bomb. He’ll circle the bases. His 12th of the season. It’s one zip. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. [Applause] knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Split on some other pitches in this atbat. Was very patient and it paid off. And now the right fielder Randall Gritic. [Applause] That’s down and in. [Applause] Two and 0. Next pitch is inside and now 3 and 0. Fast ball for a strike at 95. [Applause] And there’s a foul ball. 3-2. Good job to fight that one off. [Applause] Chopped left side and that’s a foul ball. [Applause] This one in the air center field. Cruz settles underneath it and he makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting short stop to base is empty. Heraldo Purdomo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. [Applause] And first offering is fouled off. [Applause] Two outs. Swing and a highf fly ball. Pretty well struck right field. Holds it in on the warding trap. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s now one- nothing. You’re dialed into the show. So out of the pen for the Diamondbacks, Jake Woodford. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Well, one- run game. Stepping in, Henry Davis. Known for his rocket arm behind the plate. Pitch in the dirt. One and0. Movement in the bullpen. Kevin Ginkle up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. [Applause] looking to get the tying run on base. Line drive and a base hit. Always feels amazing getting a job done when a team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Maybe a little out front of the pitch right there, but he squared it up pretty good and he kept it inside the line. And just a really nice job on the other side by the defense to hold that to a long single. Connor Falefa in the box now. Takes strike one with a tying run on at first here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Just a slow ground ball this time. Offbalance feet. There’s one and he’ll eat it and be happy with the out. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. And now the first baseman, Spencer Horowitz. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Man at first, one away. Hit in the air. Center field. Carol settles under this one. Brings it in. And there’s two away. Now batting. second baseman Nick. And now Nick Gonzalez. Gonzalez. Right now they’re looking for something. Hit hard into the gaps. Give them an opportunity with two outs to score that run from first. That misses the zone. Ball one. Wow. [Applause] [Music] And that one fouled off. [Music] That clips a corner. Next one misses and the count’s even at two. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. [Applause] Gets a piece and stays alive. Next offering misses and it counts four. Great out of the eye spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score and ball four to walk out of the bullpin can absolutely kill your momentum very quickly. They’re in some hot water trying to protect this lead. And now a high leverage at bat for Brian Reynolds. [Applause] That’s a strike. Big spot. Two out. Both the tying and go-ahead runs are aboard now. Will bullet to second base, but he’s got it to end the inning. Pirates strand a couple still behind by a count of one to nothing. On the mound now for the Pirates, Caleb Ferguson. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Number 64, Caleb Ferguson, Bla1 Alexander stands in now for the Diamondbacks 0 for three with two fly outs and a strike out. [Music] Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Activity in the bullpen. Andrew Heeney up and throwing. Cabrera getting cranked up as well. Foul ball. [Applause] struck him out looking. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. Got three straight fast balls looking in the 02 count just to pour it back. Now up next for Arizona, Jose Herrera delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. He swings and fouls one off [Music] [Applause] and down on strikes he goes. Coming out of the bullpen door be well. Not much you can argue with there as a hitter. That pitch was dotted on the inside corner of the plate. I think even if he swings the bat, it blows him up and not really able to do anything with it. Anyhow, I think if you see that early, then perhaps you can pull those hands a little bit tighter and get the fat part of the bat to it. But I’d say overall, you just have to tip the cap on that one. Great execution. Catel Marte up to the plate. That one misses and that is ball one. Not looking like they’ll be adding any insurance runs heading into the bottom of the ninth. So, it’s going to be on the bullpen to hold this lead. [Applause] Fast for a strike. [Applause] in the dirt now. Two balls in a strike. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] That misses the zone and the count’s full. Corbin Carroll on deck for Arizona. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Draws the walk there. Just missed his spot on the inside right there. Up next for the runner first with two away. Now the number two hitter Corbin Carroll top of the zone and it’s called a strike. [Applause] And that’s in there for a strike and quickly nothing at two. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. Two outs. line drive and that should be extra bases. Marte around second and he’s got a double. He was all over that one. Good job getting the foot down so he can catch it out front and pull it. Turned on it nicely for the knock. So two down. Here’s Guriel 0 for four with three ground outs and a strikeout. [Applause] Guriel gets a piece. [Applause] Two on, two outs. Ball one there. One and one. [Applause] The one two now one miss [Music] [Applause] popped up foul territory. Tory behind a play and that’ll do it. So, it’s no runs on a hit, no errors, and two are left. Onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up. It’s the Diamondbacks one and the Pirates nothing. So, the closer summon from the bullpen, Kevin Ginkle. Well, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down wins. So, this game has gone to plan more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. Well, one game at the plate for Pittsburgh. Tommy Fam. Tommy Fam. First pitch just misses. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here. No strikes. [Applause] And another ball. [Applause] Swaging a ball. Hit out towards left center field. Pulls it in. And there’s one away. Now batting center fielder O’Neal. He’s two outs away. Cruz the next to hit. [Applause] delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Well, I think that pitch surprised all of us. Right down the middle doesn’t get a swing. Not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that. That’s off the inside corner and it’s a ball and a strike. [Music] And that one almost got him. [Applause] fast ball right back to the mound now. Only one out remaining. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff. Just like we saw Key Brian Hayes getting ready to hit. [Applause] And that’s downstairs and outside. [Applause] And now it’s even up. [Music] [Applause] way out front for strike two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Well, this one was all about the pitching and defense. It’s outstanding job of the pitchers really attacking hitters, trusting what the catcher was putting down, and trusting the players standing behind them to make the plays defensively. Sometimes you want to see a high-scoring game, but sometimes you can appreciate the artistic beauty of what these pitchers did on the mound today. The final one to nothing for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon. Double move.
