BIG Steelers Training Camp News: Broderick Jones INJURED In Practice + Rookies Continue To Show Out!
Welcome in to Steelers Talk. I’m your host, Jack Sperry. I’m actually coming to you from my car. My first ever car practice report on Steelers training camp this year. Um, but we got to make do with our circumstances today with me and Cassie about to head to the airport um to go back home today. But I wanted to get a quick practice report out to you guys. Uh, the first kind of pod of Steelers training camp practices is now over. The Steelers will have a a off day tomorrow. Uh, getting ready for the first day of pads on Tuesday. today. And of course, we’ll have training camp updates when the pads go on later this week. So, make sure you guys click that subscribe button. We’ll be in our normal studio setup for those. Um, and of course, tomorrow is Steelers Talk Live where I’m going to be breaking down everything that went down at Latroe this week, uh, and kind of preview, uh, this week of padded practices for the Pittsburgh Steelers. But today, uh, the big news coming out of Latroe is that Brick Jones, a starting left tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers, left practice early today after seven shots with what is being described as a lower body injury. Head coach Mike Tomlin said that he is currently dayto-day with that injury. Um, but he had to leave relatively early uh with that injury. So, we’ll see uh how he ends up doing uh with that recovery and see if he can get back out there for the first padded practice on Tuesday. Some other uh injuries that happened. Montana Lammonius Craig who’s had a pretty decent camp to this point. Also had to leave practice with a soft tissue issue. Um I’m a poet and I don’t even know it here. And then we got uh DJ Thomas Jones, the tight end fullback who suffered a quote unquote significant injury according to head coach Mike Tomlin. Uh that doesn’t seem too good right now. Um you know DJ was somebody that’s a higheffort player. He was having a good day at practice today. Had a couple catches. Um so it’s it’s it’s really a tough one to see him go down. Apparently, it’s a foot injury. Um, so we’ll get more information on him probably by tomorrow. But then, you know, when it came to, you know, who kind of stepped up in those instances, Dylan Cook stepped up as the starting left tackle for the Steelers today, and he actually looked pretty darn good. He didn’t allow too many pressures. Um, and of course, that’s going up against the Steelers pass rush with TJ Watt, Alex Heismith, Nick Herig, these guys coming after him. And apparently, according to the people on the ground, he was holding his own, which is a really good sign for the Pittsburgh Steelers, if Brick Jones doesn’t develop this year, um, if he’s just not any good, if this injury turns into something that’s lingering, like that elbow issue that Brick had last year. Uh, but when it comes to Brick guys, obviously he hadn’t had the best start to camp. Now, obviously the the pads hadn’t come on yet. Um, and hopefully he gets on the field soon so he can show us what he can do with the pads on. But hopefully this soft tissue issue isn’t something that’s going to um affect his play and affect what he can do on the field throughout this season and affect his development in practices. I think it’s super important for Brick to be out there practicing with the guys. And if he’s going to be missing time during this really crucial developmental period for him, um, the chances of him developing into this team’s left tackle this year, their franchise left tackle are going to go down. But Dylan Cook holding his own today. Something that’s really good news for Steelers fans with Brick going down with an injury today. Also on the offensive line, Zack Frasier had yet another bad snap today. That is a bad snap, at least one of them, in all four of the first Steelers uh practices at training camp this year. Mike Tomlin kind of brushed it off yesterday in his press conference saying that this is what happens this early in camp, but I don’t know if it’s supposed to happen this consistently in camp. Not everybody’s starting center is, you know, is rolling a ball at least once a practice. Like that is something uh that’s a little bit concerning, especially because Frasier and Justin Fields had some issues with snaps last year. Um so Frasier’s got to figure that out. Um plain and simply, I thought he had a fantastic rookie season, but I do think he’s been a little bit of a disappointment in camp to this point, allowing some easy TFLs. Um you know, obviously the bad snaps. he’s got to kick it in gear here um if he’s going to repeat his performance that was really really good in his rookie season. Uh then when practice began it was of course seven shots again today. Rogers threw a touchdown to Janu Smith on the first play. So that was great to see. Uh but then also Rogers threw an incompletion to DK Metaf on a fade. Juan Thornhill had some really great coverage on that. Got another PBU. Thornhills had a really good start to camp here. Um then there was a false start on Cook. Dylan Cook, the left tackle. Um, and by that point, Brick was out. And then Rogers threw a touchdown to Muth. Then there was a drop touchdown. Uh, Mason threw it to Max Hurleman and he dropped it in the end zone. Then Mason Rudolph threw an incomplete pass to the back corner of the end zone. U inaccurate pass from Mason. And then Will Howard threw a touchdown to Hull. Um, and then you got Rogers throwing an incomplete pass to Roman Wilson. Deshawn Elliot with some really good coverage on that one. So, a couple PBUs there. Um, you know, Brandon Eckles also had really good coverage on that sixth play or fifth play, I should say, with Mason throwing that incompletion. So, uh, defense ended up winning seven shots today, four to three. But this has been a really competitive period, guys. That offense with the Steelers is holding their own against what I would say is the best defense in football right now. Every single uh, seven shots has ended four to three. So, the Steelers are certainly holding their own. Um, and we’ll see if the offense can get a win when the pads go on on Tuesday. Some other standouts today, rookie, uh, defensive tackle YA Black had two PBUs, two batted passes today on Mason Rudolph. U, so today was Black’s best day in my opinion, but overall he’s had a pretty darn good camp, but today he had more of those impact type of pressures and plays uh, that you want to see from him. Then Brandon Eckles continues to have a an impressive camp. He got an interception. He had another PBU. Um he’s been playing in the slot on on the outside. He’s been playing everywhere. He played with the with the ones yesterday and held up nicely. So in terms of being that fourth uh quarterback that’s not a starter, but if there’s an injury to somebody you can trust to go in there and play inside, outside um you know, play whatever role you need him to play, um I think that is a huge asset to the Steelers secondary this year. And even Mike Tomlin um gave him a shout out in his postpractice press conference today with how good he has started. Then UDFA wide receiver Rock Taylor out of Memphis. Had multiple intermediate dig route catches today. Two from Mason Rudolph and another from Will Howard who also had a pretty decent day today as well as the third team quarterback. So Rock uh you know really having his best day of camp. He’s going to be a name to keep your eye on for sure once we get to those preseason games because he’s big and he’s got really reliable hands and he really showed out today at practice. So that’s fantastic. And then another third team type of player that showed out and has been uh showing out is Ekku Leota, an outside linebacker, another UDFA coming in here and he’s been getting in the back field and he has been winning. Um so that has been fantastic to see somebody else to keep your eye out for especially with Jeremiah Moon going down with an injury yesterday. So, I want to give some final thoughts here. Um, specifically about Aaron Rogers in the offense because we’ve been talking a lot about Rogers in the offense and how Rogers has had some accuracy issues, how he’s not really connecting with his receivers when throwing the ball down the field. And today, you know, he wasn’t throwing the ball down the field all that much, but it was a lot more efficient. He was getting the ball out on time. He was playing with better with better rhythm. It was more consistent overall today. It wasn’t perfect. He did have some uh overthrows. He did have some inaccuracy moments that have popped their head up in all four practices to this point. Um, but it was more consistent today uh offensively. He was moving the sticks more consistently against that first team defense which did have TJ Watt, Cam Hayward, and Darius Slay all back in the lineup after uh a veteran uh off day yesterday. So eventually you want to see Rogers uh and this offense start slinging it down the field and you know hitting those tight window throws against this really good uh Steelers secondary because you know we can sit here and say the Steelers defense is good but the Steelers are going to be expecting Rogers to beat you know good defenses if they want to go where they want to go which is to the Super Bowl right so you got to be able to beat good defenses you’re going to have to play the Kansas cities of the world and you’re going to have to play the Denvers of the world and the Los Angeles Chargerses of the world and the Philadelphia Eagles es of the world. Like you’re going to have to beat these teams with good defenses in order to win Super Bowls and you have to be able to throw it down the field to keep those defenses honest. So, uh, Rogers needs to continue to develop that chemistry, that, uh, connection with his receivers. Um, you know, kind of more of the same when it came to Roman Wilson. Another kind of quiet day. Calvin had some nice catches today, though. Um, and then DK, a little bit of a more quiet day for him as well. But, uh, he he he had a couple catches as well. I thought Muth was probably the most effective first team wide receiver today at tight end. It seems like his connection with Rogers is starting to develop uh as the days go on in camp. So, that’s fantastic to see. Um but yeah, I think that today was a big day for the for the offense to get a little bit more consistency so they can get a little confidence heading into pads on Tuesday. And I think Aaron Rogers and that unit accomplished that. Um there’s a lot to work with there. Rogers’s arm talent is on full display. Um, and I’m excited to see what they’re going to be able to do once the pads come on because that’s really the strength of this Steelers offense, right? They’re going to be putting the pads on and they’re going to be doing 12 and 13 personnel with two and three tight ends. I’m excited to see what that’s going to look like uh once we go full go in the Trobe later this week. So, um, my final note here, and I’m going to end the video on this. I have been so impressed with the Steelers rookie class through these first four practices. like pretty much everybody in this draft class uh for the Steelers has been making an impact. Maybe outside of Carson Bruner, the linebacker out of Washington, but Dererick Harmon, Caleb Johnson, Jack Sawyer, uh Will Howard, YA Black, and Dante Kent. All right, so that’s pretty much all of their draft picks so far have been making an impact in their respective units. Howard’s looking uh really comfortable out there. Uh Dante Kent had an interception this week and has been fantastic in coverage with the backups. Uh Dererick Harmon has had a number of pressures and TFLs. He is looking as disruptive um as we thought he was going to be coming out of Oregon. Caleb Johnson had a great first two days. Cooled down a little bit on day three and four. He had a drop today. Uh but he’s looking really good and explosive as well. Uh Jack Sawyer’s been winning uh in those in those backup uh type of units for this team. So, I I I’m really really uh excited about this rookie class. I think Omar Khan did a fantastic job of finding young talent to replenish this roster with. And I’m excited about this team’s future. Man, that that that doesn’t even count Sebastian Castro, who’s had a pretty darn good week in his own right as a UDFA. Of course, we’ve talked about Rock Taylor, who’s had a really good week as well. So, I really like this rookie class for the Pittsburgh Steelers guys. I think they’ve been doing a fantastic job and uh I’m looking forward to seeing how these rookies continue their progress as we get closer to these preseason games in just a few short weeks. All right, that’s going to be it for my show today, guys. We’re going to be uh flying back home today. I’ll be back in the office tomorrow for Steelers Talk Live. I really do appreciate all of your guys’s support and uh all the nice things that you guys said to me at Latroe about the channel, about all the support that you guys give. You guys are just absolutely fantastic. Thank you guys so much. Um, I’ll see you guys later.

Well, made the next guy up won't give us some many yellow flags during the gameπ
Thanks for the reports these past 4 days. Appreciate you being willing to do the report from the car. Thank you
I've been wondering how Dylan Cook was developing. Been a camp warrior a few times, but knew he had a lot of development to do as a former QB.
I'm rooting for Broderick & Cook.
All that shieii talking… people better shut up. If BJones get injured we cooked. Gotta stay positive on him. Need this team to stay healthy.
Thanks for another update I'm ready for football
What about last yearβs draft picks that didnβt play? Cory Trice, Logan Lee, and Roman Wilson.
Broderick sucks and we keep babying him. Every damn excuse!
Wow!
What an excellent report. Bravo!
Zack Frazier is too skilled a player to develop the yips. He'll be fine (fingers crossed).
Broderick Jones is another story. He's beginning to look like a bust! He's Omar's first draft pick.
"Come on, BJ!"
But, as Tomlin always says, "One player's loss is another's opportunity." Dylan Cook has been hanging around for a couple of years. Maybe he can seize the day.
Roc Taylor, Gareth Warren, and Donte Kent are underdog players I'm rooting for. It's good to hear that two of them are already turning heads.
Too bad about D.J. Thomas-Jones. He was gettin' it on!
Just bought an Aaron Rodgers jersey letβs gooooooooooooooooopppp
The foot injury to Thomas is why i hate this 3 game preseason!! Many times, a player doesn't get the chance to redeem his self! Back in the day, (My days), there was a 6 game preseason!! I shouldn't have to say the rest. Of course, that was before all the big time guarantees. There were pro bowlers playing for 200,000 a season……unbelievable.
Tbh after this year I could see them replacing Broderick especially if Troy comes in and balls out.. Roman Wilson is the only player to me that matters the most this training camp
Steelers' UDFAs making it hard to figure out the 53 roster πππ
Appreciate the commentary, I don't think you mentioned Adrian Williams or Gareth Warren. Don't know if that's because they haven't done anything or because they're super under the radar as udfas, but I am particularly interested in what they can bring to the table
#77 is the weak link ..we going as far as the o-line take us
F BJ. He needs to go
Looking forward to the best cyber broadcast in September
If Broderick isn't there, who is the defense going to run past…
Thank you for the great reporting. HERE WE GO STEELERS HERE WE GO β¨οΈβ¦οΈπ·οΈππβπΎππ€πΎπ€ππ€ππ€ππ€ππ€ππ€π
The developmental stage for Broderick is done itβs year 3 time to play well or sit down
"The best defense in football right now!" Is that based on league-wide stats in shorts?
Haha love Jackβs lowkey slight leaving Baltimore out of teams defenses is gonna have to beat to get to the superbowl
