MLB LIVE🔴 San Diego Padres vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jul 27, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
Welcome to St. Louis and Bush Stadium, home of the Cardinals since 2006. Major League Baseball on a Sunday afternoon. It’s the San Diego Padres’s taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. And now and we’ll be back for the first pitch right after this. Coming up on the first pitch and towing the slab, Eric Fetty. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this. Every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark, in front of their fans, in front of the city. And you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around and we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. All right, ready to get underway. Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit here. Swing and a miss. There’s that change up. And that one fouled off. So, two strikes on Tatis. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. I’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count. Too good of a pitch to hit right there. You have to expand the zone. Keep that leadoff man off first base. Luis Arise stands in. That one finds a corner and that is strike one. Fetty the 64 righty 205 lbs and they went out and made a trade for him last season. move to first. Tatis dives back in. Tatis aboard here at first with nobody out and a foul ball. Tatis runs. Got him swinging. And that’s a stolen base. Not even close. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Here’s Machado. That’s in there. Strike one. Man at second. Fouled off down the right side. Next pitch is downstairs. Slice to right and foul ball. Foul ball still a one and two count. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit, just not able to square it up. On its way to the corner and that drops foul. Well, he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact. Swing and that ball smashed down the line. Scott calls it in and there’s two away. As we take a look at the Padres’s lineup, this group was shut out their last game, so we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored. And you want to get off to a great start, score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games which no one wants to be a part of. Gavin Sheets in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. And that misses and the count even one and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. Two outs and one in scoring position. That’s down and in. Popped up. Donovan settles underneath it, squeezes it, and that’ll do it. One left for San Diego. And now the Cardinals get their first shot at it here. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in St. Louis and on the mound for San Diego in this one, Dylan Cece. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. We go to the bottom of the first and stepping in for the Cardinals, Brendan Donovan on the inside corner for a strike. Laser could be troubled. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he’ll make it safely for a leadoff double in the bottom of the first. Just so sound in his mechanics. Hits against a firm front side. And the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. Runner in scoring position. No outs. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One. Blind drive. Leaps. He’s got it. Now we take a check of the St. Louis Cardinals lineup and probably their most productive player so far this year, Brendan Donovan. You know, Boog, a guy who hits righties as well as he does. Just an absolute matchup nightmare. I mean, most of the pitching you’ll face is right-handed. So, when you’re hitting over 400 against righties, you’re going to put up some serious numbers. I like his chances in this one. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. One out and a runner at second. Swinging a miss and it’s 0 and two. No walls, two strikes. struck him out looking. That was pretty nasty. Most guys are very aggressive when they see the stakes out there on the base paths and can’t understand why he wasn’t ready to swing the bat. You’ve got to be ready to swing the bat in a situation like that with the go-ahead run in scoring position. Wilson Contrarus now up to the plate. There’s the strike. And that’s a base hit. Headed for the plate now. A long throw home, but it’s offline and it’s one- nothing. Well, the strike first as he gets the job done to bring home the run. Other than lifting one into the gap or blasting one over the wall, there aren’t a whole lot of hits that are more satisfying than a nice line drive into center field. So, that definitely felt good. Here’s Nolan Aronado headed towards the corner. Sheets makes his way towards it. makes a nice running catch and that is that. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s an early one- nothing lead. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here in St. Louis and the batter will be the shortstop. Xander Bogarts. Bogarts who wears that number two on his back for his idol Derek Jeter. Fetty back to work way outside and it’s one and0. That’s to third. Aronado the throw to first. Bogart’s retired. Jackson. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. It’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate under the Mendoza line so far this month. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Oh, and one just off the inside edge. Patrick Johnson calling the balls in strikes. Pretty standard zone for Johnson. And sometimes you might get a little jumpy, a little excited and expand the zone, but usually you at least feel like the pitcher on the mound is earning it. And that’s important because you got to make players earn it. Singy, what kind of strike zone is most frustrating for hitters? I’d say off the plate, away, and down. And why? Those are the toughest locations to hit the baseball. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. We’re going to take a look at the pitch sequence of that at bat. And the thing to notice are the pitch locations. Every single one of them on the edges of the strike zone. And as a hitter, that can be pretty frustrating because you don’t expect a pitcher to be able to make quality pitches one after another like that. And so those are tough spots to do damage. And a great demonstration of pitch command. And it got him a punch out that time. Jake Cronin work in the box now. No balls in a strike. And that one is downstairs. And it’s one and one. The one-1 is fouled off. Two out. Space is empty. swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Donovan makes the play and that is that. Padres’s down in order, still behind by a count of one to nothing. Bottom of the inning and stepping in is the speedy Mason Win. Foul ball there on the ground right side. He’ll do it himself and quickly one away in the secondielder. And up next for St. Louis, Jordan Walker. Right through there for a strike. One out. Base is empty. M. That’s out. And a swing and a miss. I think he was sitting off speed there. Two strikes. Ball two. Squeeze through that one. It’s a strike out. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Now here is Pedro Pahes in the first pitch. Misses for ball one and another ball. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball three. And there’s the automatic. Back-to-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. That’s ball four. tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Runner at first with two away. And now here’s the speed threat outfielder Victor Scott. This guy’s just a tremendously talented center fielder. Gold glove caliber type out there. Offensively he can do some things but you know also has some streakiness as well. I think the key just trying to find a way for him to be consistent day in and day out. you know, he saves runs in the outfield, so that’s going to buy him more time to work things out at the dish. Two outs. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Nabs it and that is that. The Cards leave one, but they still lead it one- nothing. On to the third inning now batting Tyler Wade. Tyler Chopper right side. Donovan throws the first in time. One up, one down. Diaz. And now it’s Elias Diaz. That’s a strike. Not sure if he could be in more of a groove. Looks really relaxed. He’s retired seven straight. This guy’s feeling it right now. That’s off the inside corner. One and one. That’s ball two. Swings through that one for strike two. Down to the dirt. Swing and a miss. Pus gathers, throws to first, gets the out. Two down after the strike out. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catch are on the same page right now. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. He’s one for one. Let off the game with a single. He’s a guy, Chris’s highlights include some of the best throws from the outfield that you will ever see. Definitely one of the best arms of the sport. Pitches in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Yeah, the infielders and the catcher can never give up on a play because if this guy thinks he has a chance, he’s going to throw it from the warning track if he has to. Just missed. That one misses. Now two balls in a strike. Right through there for a strike. I think that pitch surprised all of us. Right down the middle. doesn’t get a swing. Not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that foul ball left side. He’ll see another Tatis waits. Good job to fight that one off. Two down to and Tatis able to stay alive. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Do next. Off the mark there. Three and two now. Wow. This guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. And El Nino is stifled for the K. Three up, three down for San Diego. They still trail one- nothing. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now it’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. And there’s a ball. Just missed. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And now three and 0. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Oh, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Next is the designated hitter, Ivonne Herrera. He’s 0 for one. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. Donovan gets his lead at first with nobody out. Fouled off. He was late. the 1-1. This one in the air right field and that is a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Here’s a one-two inside. Just missed. Really good take, especially with two strikes. swings and lines a base hit into left field. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Now up for St. Louis, Alec Burlson. Fast for a strike. First and second, no outs here in the last half of the third. That one hit the knees for a strike. Quickly down 02 in the count. I think you got to choke up a little bit. Spread out the feet. You don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be and it stays fair. Oh, he botches it. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score. Runner stops at third and they’re at the corners with nobody out. Backto back singles. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive knock. So runners at the corners, nobody out. Here’s Contrarus now. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. Just missed. misses off the plate. Now two and 0. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. No outs. Runners at first and third. Ripped to third and caught. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. So now it’s Dolan Aronado flying to left his first time. Splits the plate. Strike one. In this situation, the batter’s got to know what the pitcher’s trying to do to him, and that’s trying to get him to hit the ball on the ground, get two for one. You got to look for something up in the zone, and worst case scenario, you deliver the sacrifice five. Swing and a highf fly ball in the air left field. brings it in. Runner tags from third. He’s in on the sack fly. It’s three zip. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. Another batter. Mason win. Grounded out his first time. There’s the strike. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. Two outs. Swings and misses at the sweeper. No ball. Two strikes. That one just missing inside. Now one and two. Too close for me partner to take that O2 fast ball, but for whatever reasons he let it go by. He’s still in the at bat. I don’t think he’ll let the next one go. Two balls, two strikes. Got him looking. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. So, it’s two runs on two hits, no errors, and a runner left. On to inning number four. It’s the Cardinals three and the Padres’s nothing back here at Bush Stadium. Now, it’s the DH Luis Arise. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shut down inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. That one hit to right. Walker makes the catch. One down. Manny Machado. Manny Machado coming to the plate for the Padres’s after homering earlier in the game. Yeah, and nobody has hit more home runs for the Padres’s franchise than Manny Machado. You’re right about that. It was just last year when Manny passed a member of San Diego’s inaugural team from 1969. Nate Colbert for the top spot. Burlson settles under it and makes the catch. Two down. Sheets. Two out. Space is empty. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. 0 for one with a fly out. And that one cutting but missing down low. Next offering is in for a strike. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Padres’s go down quietly. Still down three nothing. Bottom of the fourth and stepping in for the Cardinals, Jordan Walker. Walker measures 6 feet 6 in 250 lbs. A former first round pick in 2020 to the right side. Throw over to Croninworth. Lead off hitter retired in the fourth. Now batting catcher Pedro. And here’s the catcher Pedro Pah. Lifted in the air out to left. Sheets makes the grab and there’s two gone. Now batting center. Two down, base is empty. And up next for St. Louis, Victor Scott. He popped out to the catcher his first time out. Ripped on the ground to second. Throw it to Croninworth. Inning over. Nothing doing there for St. Louis, but they’re on top by a count of three to nothing. We go to the top of the fifth. Digging in. Xander Bogarts. Bogart. Fetty back to work. That pitch in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. You know, these Padres’s just aren’t putting together very many good at bats in this one. Just one base runner to this point and it’s not exactly early anymore. They have guys in this lineup capable of sparking something, but it just hasn’t happened for him yet. And now the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. He struck out swinging at his first at He’s controlling things out there on the mound, not messing around at all. He’s been in attack mode since the very start. this to center field. That one gets down for a hit. And they have their first base runner since the first inning. Dominant performance for him today. Boo. Just two hits allowed so far. No runs across either. And he’s had an answer for just about every hitter he’s faced. So I don’t think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Fly out his first time. Fetty checks over to first and he’s back. Ground ball right side. Could be two. Off balance feed. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit. Hit the ball on the ground. Kill some worms while you’re at it. So digging in now for San Diego, Tyler Wade rolled out to second in his first at bat and then misses off the outside edge. Croninworth leads off first with two down to the inning. Right through there for a strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Two outs. Outside low. It’s two and two. went with the sweeper, but it misses. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Here’s Elias Diaz. 0 for one so far. Check swing called strike. First and second, two down and we’re in the top of the fifth. And that is out of play. And the pitch. That one misses. And the count is one and two. Excellent arm action on that two strike change up. Just missed. Man, he wanted that call. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. And that’s down and away. Swinging a ground ball and that’s just foul. Now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. Create just a That’s strike three and the third out. So we take a break. Still nothing on the scoreboard for him after five. It’s the Cardinals three and the Padres’s nothing. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. Donovan swing and a miss as he was out front that time. And that’s outside. Line drive and foul ball. Off the plate inside and the count is even. Two and two. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. The 22 gets a check swing. Now it’ll appeal to third. No swing. Gary Simmons with the call. Struck him out looking. This guy will throw any pitch in any count. 3-2. He goes off speed, gets the out. And next is the designated hitter, Ivon Herrera. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Nick Pavetta getting ready to go. Kick a hard throwing right-hander up as well. Base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. Next offering is down low. Two one. Ground ball left side and it gets by him. Runner on at first with one gone. Now the left fielder Alec Burlson. That one off the mark. Ball one. Here comes the pitch. Runner breaks for second. Foul ball. That one way inside. Fouled off left side. line drive to short and caught batting. And up to hit is Wilson Contrarus. Yeah, there’s the strike. All one’s the count. gets a piece and stays alive. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. So, one left for the Cardinals, but they lead it three nothing. Back here in St. Louis, all set for the top of the sixth and the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. Swinging a liner foul off to the right. Movement in the bullpen. Kyle Ley up and throwing. Gray getting cranked up as well. Next offering is downstairs. That one missed. Now in this three ball count down in the ball game, you’ve got to be very selective. Take your walk if they’ll give it to you. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk that could jump start an offense that’s really struggled to score in this one. Don’t want to wake a team up with the free pass. And now the DH Luis Araz for two in this one. Pickoff throw. Tatis dives back in. Yeah, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. That one the other way feeds the second out there and they get him easily in first. It’s a double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaders. They make tough plays. Look simple now. Machado up here. Swings and sends a rocket to right. And that’ll do it. Make it six shut out innings for him out there. Now it’s the Cardinals three and the Padres’s nothing. So, the Padres’s with a new arm on the mound. Nick Paveta just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Here’s Nolan Aronado. First pitch misses. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Adrien Morome, the southpaw, is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in. And that’s in there at the knees. really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating and a foul ball. He stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Mason Win getting ready to hit. Check swing and a slow roller to the right side and he handles it himself for the out. Nice job of deception right there by the pitcher. Got the hitter out there a little bit, couldn’t check his swing and induces a nice little ground out. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. Just missed. There’s the strike. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. And he grounds one to the right side and it goes just foul. Two balls, two strikes to count with two outs. Two balls, two strikes. Cut on and missed. And it’s a strikeout. And that is the inning. Red Birds down quietly, but they lead it three nothing. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Kyle Ley. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year, and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Gavin Sheets digs in now. He’s been a great free agent side. St. Louis. See the velocity 97 with that fast. You can do it. Jack win around two. And ball one. Was good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Absolutely smoked that baseball. What a swing. Sent it out way faster than it came in. course 113 off the bat and no matter where you hit it at that speed it’s tough to make a play on. Now, here’s Xander Bogarts now has grounded out a couple of times. And that’s outside. Rudder at first with no outs here. Tap foul at the plate. That one a little bit high and it’s two and one. That’s a little bit low. Three balls, one strike. Next offering is fouled back. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. stays alive. Three and two. The pitch is outside at ball four. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Jackson Merrell. Jackson Merrill steps to the plate in a clutch situation. One for two. to first. Might be two. Contrarus over to second to first and that is a double play. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. Jake Cronin work the next up for the Padres’s. First pitch just misses. Two outs and a runner at third here in the top half of inning number seven. Next pitch is outside. And another ball. Tyler Wade waiting in the on deck circle. They can get him up. He’d represent the tying run. So critical pitch right here. And ball four to a board. Here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pad. Kyle Ley is done. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. New arm of the mound for the Cardinals, Sunonny Gray. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. So, two outs with runners on the corners. Stepping in for San Diego, Tyler Wade. And that’s in there for strike one. Got no problem with that take. First pitch from a reliever you haven’t seen for a while. You want to make sure that you can pick up the release point. The tying run at the plate. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. swing and a miss. Struck him out and the Padres’s waste a chance. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Adrien Morome, he has a great slider with tons of movement. Pedro Pah now at the plate. He’s 0 for one. in his fifth season, 26 years old. And he was born in Cuba. The 1-1 is fouled off. and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Come on out and miss. struck him out and the leadoff hitter sat down to open the seventh. Man, it’s so difficult as a hitter to get on plane with that pitch. It’s breaking down and in and you’ve got to find a way to match the plane and if it’s nasty like that one bite at the end, most times you’re swinging over the top and walking back to the dugout. Now up for St. Louis, Victor Scott. His split numbers between June and July there. in there at the knees for a strike. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Good eye in that spot. Really good slider. He’s up there just hoping that it ends up off the plate away. Drilled in the air out towards right center and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s two down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Donovan stands in now and watches strike one. And there’s a foul ball. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, I want to stay up the middle that way. If you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field knock. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. And a miss. struck him out. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. We’re at the top of the eighth. Here’s the catcher, Elias Diaz. The Padres’s in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo, it starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Ball one, no strikes. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. And another ball. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter count at 2 and 0. Swinging a foul out of play. Next offering is fouled back. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied them up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. That’s a strike out. Good looking sweeper there. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. Check swing called. Strike. Strike one. The Redbirds leading by three and we’re in the top of the eighth and he grounds one back up the middle. A dive. Nice stop and that’s a great play for the out. Well, this is obviously a tremendous play but for me it starts with a wellbroken in glove to have the confidence to go down knowing that ball is going to be right in the pocket. So you’ve got a clean transfer pop back up to the feet and fire across the diamond. Outstanding job. manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Sunny Gray will depart and as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. So, they turn to the lefty in this spot, John King. And this is his 40th appearance of the season. So, he’s starting to log a decent amount of work this year. Two outs. Base is empty. Luis Azis the next up for the Padres’s. That one finds the zone. 0 and one. Two down. Nobody on to third. Oh, what a stop over to first. They get the out and that’ll do it. Well, that’s cat-like reflexes over there at the hot corner. Nice job of making that play and ending the inning. Yuki Matsui into the game and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. So now here’s the Cardinals designated hitter, Ivon Herrera. right through there for a strike. Swing and a ball lined out towards center. Merrill grabs it on the run. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. nothing to show for it. But in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. And it’s fouled away. Knocks that one away and will do it again. Down to the dirt, swing, and a miss. Throw to first in time for the second out. Good job to clean it up after the drop third strike. Here comes Wilson Contrarus. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. That pitch in for a strike and they count one and two. fights it off. He’ll see another and a ball even a count. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Bogarts with the throw to first and Contrarus is retired. That ends the inning. Back now and on the mound a closer Ryan Helley. Save opportunity for him right here. And he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with the W. Here comes Manny Machado. 0 for three in this one. Swinging a foul straight back. Pitch misses. And now it’s even one and one. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. Outside low. Two and one. We got two balls, one strike. Popped up to the left in foul ground. Poll brings it in. One up, one down. He’s two outs away. Next up is the cleanup spot for the Padres’s. Gavin Sheets, one for three. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. While so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days, you would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. And that one sliced foul. Next pitch is outside. The Cardinals trying to close out a three-run lead here in the top of the ninth. Swing and a miss for the strike out. Padres’s with only one out remaining. Not a great curveball there at all, but clearly he wasn’t looking for it because it just dropped right into the happy zone and it looked like to me the swing was a little bit late. Tells me he gave up on it early and then just try to have that emergency hack at the last second to put it in play. Bogarts the next to hit takes ball one. Well, as good as things can be, it can be a tough day at the office, even for the skippers, seeing the offense just sputter. Not able to get anything going. Two outs and a foul ball. ground ball and this should do it. Throw to first and the Cardinals claim the win here behind some great pitching and defense. Another outing and another save. That’s his 20th of the season. And this was a good example of why they rely on him so heavily in these close games. A shut out in this one. Three nothing our final score for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
