MLB LIVE🔴 New York Mets vs San Diego Padres – Jul 28, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
with Chris Singleton. I’m John Shambi. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the New York Mets and the San Diego Padres’s. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about ready to go. Today’s starting pitcher, you Darvish. And Chris, he’s a guy that gets better when things get tough. Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the RA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that erra will have dropped over time. Brandon NMO, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. No strike and that misses. And now two and 0. There’s a strike. And that one upstairs. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Now up to Francisco Lindor. Swing and that’s ripped towards right center makes the grab. One down. Let’s take a peek at the Mets lineup here. Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs. Tyrone Taylor. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Over to first and save. Darish in his 13th season, 38 years old and he was born in Japan. Juan Sodto in now takes ball one off the plate. Ball too high. Fought off foul. This one in the air. Machado snags it for the second out. Here’s Pete Alonszo. It’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate under the Mendoza line so far this month. Darvis checks on the runner. He’s safe. And that’s in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Smoked on the ground to second. Fires over to first and that is that. Mets leave one. And now the Padres’s get their first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. Back after this on the show back here in San Diego and today’s starting pitcher, Jose Bh. Tell us about him in that sub3 ERA. Singy. Well, anytime you can keep your erra under three, you’re doing a lot of things right and you’re putting your team in a position to win a lot of ball games as well. And he’s doing tremendous out there on the mound. Every time he gets the ball, you expect him to go out there and dominate. And that’s what he’s been to this point. We’ll see how he is today. Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit here. Boo Tatis is so athletic. He probably could have carved out a career in other sports if he wanted, but he grew up in a baseball family with baseball in his blood. Next pitch is downstairs. That one fouled off. Tatis waits. Swaying and a miss. And now two and two. Two balls, two strikes. That one missing inside. [Music] Hit hard on the ground to short. Throw picked up first. Got him. As we take a look at the Padres’s lineup, this an offense, Chris, that’s having a hard time scoring runs right now. Yeah, sometimes things just aren’t going to click. And unfortunately what happens is players press, they try to do a little bit more and they get out of their game. You’ve got to let the game come to you. If you chase it, it’s going to run from you. So this is a team that just needs to calm down, relax, and understand that they’re going to come out of this. And that one fouled off. [Music] popped up and that’s a fair ball. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in the tag and they cut him down going for two. Two outs. Space is empty. Manny Machado the next up for the Padres’s way high. Two outs. Base is empty. Next offering is in for a strike. this to third. Boots it. He’s safe. We all know that that first inning can be a critical one in terms of guys settling in and the tone being set for the game. So, this isn’t what you’re looking for on defense. Two out errors are a lot like two out walks, but maybe even worse because your pitcher did his job to get what should have been the last out of that inning. All right, Jackson. Jackson Merrill at the plate. Now that’s ball one. Swings through that one. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. This one smacked out to left center. He dives, but he can’t make the catch. And that’s a two out double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. And the first pitch misses for ball one. That clips the corner. Strike two. And there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing a run. Next pitch way upstairs. Two outs, two in scoring position. Gets a piece and stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Two outs. And a swing and a miss. Huge strike out there. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. Top of the second. And here is Starling Marte. Mark pitch is in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. So just a cement mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. Next one is off the plate and now it’s even one and one. Joe McDonald doing the home plate duties here. Well, Joe’s an interesting one. I’m always trying to figure out what exactly his zone is. Feels like it kind of moves around from game to game. Sometimes inning to inning. And now two and one. Yeah, I think that’s fair. I don’t think he’s ever way off with his balls and strikes, but yeah, I don’t think it’s easy to define what his zone is. Like you said, pitch is in there and the count’s even at two. swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Wow. Just great bite to that slider. Broke hard out of his zone and he just couldn’t hold up the swing. You know, as a hitter, that pitch is really hard to take and there’s just not much you can do with it. You know that, but you don’t want to get rung up by the umpire. Now at the plate, Brett Batty. in the air left field down the line and it stays fair. man at first with one gone. And the batter now Mark Ventos late swing fouled all. Here comes the 01. Swinging a foul out of play. Next pitch misses way outside. Baiten leads off first with one away. Lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Johnson under this one. Pulls it down and there’s two gone. And the catcher number 13, Luis Torren. Luis Torren up now for the Mets. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Squirts away a little bit and the runner stays where he is. And another ball. I would expect in this three 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. Next offering is in for a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. Darbish kicks, delivers, and ball forward to a board. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Tyrone Taylor. So up next for New York, Tyrone Taylor. Swing and a highf fly ball. That’s out to center and that’s the third out. Two left for the Mets. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back here at Petco Park, there’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. Fast ball for a strike. Hard hit to third and quickly one away in the second base. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Croninworth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way swaying at a ball popped in the air out to shallow center. Akuna makes the play and there are two down. Bill, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there and I’m telling you he is going to be frustrating with himself until his next at bat. Next for the Padres’s, Rice Johnson. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One ball, no strike. That’s a strike. Establishing both ends of the zone is critical. Most times guys are wanting to get hitters out down, but if you can get them to look up, get a called strike, that’s going to make that strike zone a lot bigger in the air fairly deep to right field. Marte snags it and that is the third out of the inning. We’ll move to the third with no score. And we’re back. Here’s Brandon NMO. The leftielder number Darvish back to work. Swaying in a bouncer towards third. Fires to first on the run. Got him. Great play to keep the lead off man off base. And now it’s Frankie Lindor. He’s 0 for one. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond. And this guy is at the top of the list. The shorts stop takes the ball. And you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind them. Boo. The one thing about that is speed never goes into a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. Next offering upstairs. When you look at the ability to save runs defensively, but then also put runs up on the scoreboard, that’s the kind of player that every championship team needs to have. 3-1 and he couldn’t come up with it. Luis Anelkuna up now for the Mets. Came into the game on defense. So, his first trip to the plate here. Lindor the move and that one fouled off. Pitch misses inside and the count is one and one. One strike. [Music] Maybe a two ball. Five, four, three. It’s a double play. And that’ll do it for the inning. Nothing doing here this half. We head now to the home half of inning number three. We’re tied. Nothing. Nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark set for the bottom of the third. Martine Maldonado up to him. Popped up to the left into foul ground. Vientos sizes this one up. has room and he makes the catch. Got the pitch that he wanted just a little bit quick. Front shoulder open, backside collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. Swing and a line drive slicing into right field. Marte makes the grab. Two down. The first baseman number four Luis Luis Arise stands in Chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Still tied at zero. Last of the third and that one is in the dirt and it’s a ball and a strike. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits and it is two and one. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he could put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. Still two and two after the foul ball. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps. He steps on the bag. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Offense held in check there. On to inning number four. No score. Back here in San Diego, John Shambi with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth, Pete Alonzo. on the outside corner. Strike one. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. He went around according to Carl Dixon. It misses. It’s a strike out. Typically that high fast ball, if it’s close to the top of the strike zone, a hitter, if he’s prepared for it, can get to it. But that one just had that little jump at the end, which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it. And it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s internal clock would expect it to. And that’s why you see the swing and miss. Here’s Starling Martier. in the air left field brings it in and there’s two away. And now the Mets DH Brett Batty one for one with a single so far. Batty in his second season, 25 years old. He’s usually a third baseman, but today he’s the designated hitter. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Has room and he makes the catch. Down in order go to Mets. Still no score. Back here at Petco Park. Manny Machado up to the plate. Manny Machado. You know, Boo, Petco Park seems to be transforming into Machado’s castle. I mean, nobody’s hit more home runs in this ballpark. And Machado passed Adrien Gonzalez for the top spot on the list in 2023. And that misses. Two balls, no strikes. Strike one. Two balls, one strike. On the ground to third and it goes just foul. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And a swing and a miss. And one away. And he’ll be beating himself up on the way back to the dugout. Got a pitch to hit and just couldn’t get to it. I think that slider really caught way more of the plate than it was supposed to. So digging in now for San Diego, Jackson Merrill. That one to first sneaks through base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Runner on at first with one gone. Xander Bogarts the next up for the Padres’s 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. He’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. usually doesn’t work out for success, but he can never predict baseball. Runner on the goal. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] That misses the zone and the count one and two. The shorts stop takes a ball. Got him. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. and hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Gavin Sheets, the next up for the Padres’s. First time up, he grounded to third. Ripped, but a curls foul. And that is out of play. Little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an off speed pitch on this next one. The 02. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. At the belt and fires. Got him looking. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Padres’s leave one and we are still scoreless. We go to the top of the fifth. Here’s the third baseman, Mark Vientos. [Music] That misses the zone. One and0. Well, these Mets just haven’t produced as many competitive at bats as I’d like to see in this one. They haven’t run a single count full in this ball game. And that’s just wild to me. That stat alone shows they’re making it way too easy to get them out. Darbish delivers. A sliding stop. Fires to first and that’s a great play for the out. Just so impressed with the movement on that play. Footwork was excellent. The arm strength was there and of course the most important part was getting the out. Here’s the catcher. Luis Torren worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. That’s a strike. Go and one. And that’s outside. That misses the zone and it’s two and one. And a foul ball. One down, base is empty. Taps softly third base side. A swinging bunt. Fires across the diamond and the first two set down in the top of the fifth. He’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. So, two down now and here is Tyrone Taylor. Fly to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one. Ball one to Taylor. And that’s in there for a strike. Okay, now it’s even. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Outside low. The countdown two and two. and delivers outside. Swinging a ground ball up the middle and he beats the throw. Shows off the wheels right there. An infield single. Got himself in great position and couldn’t have played that one any better, but just stood no chance with that great speed running down the line. So digging in, Brandon NMO. He’s 0 for one. And there’s the strike. No ball. One strike. Darvis checks on the runner and he dives back in safely. Taylor leads off first with two down to the inning. Next offering is fouled back. Two outs. Ball one low. swing and a miss and he got him. That K is his third of the game. He continues to roll on the mound as five shutout innings are in the books and we still have no score. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Stepping in for San Diego, Jake Croninworth. And that’s outside. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Edwin Diaz, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. Maniah, a left-hander, also throwing. And another ball. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. In this situation, ahead 200. He’s put himself in a really good spot. Right through there for a strike. right side. Hard hit and he handles it himself for the outiel number 29. And here comes the Mets manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Jose BH done for the night. And that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. So they turned to Edwin Diaz out of the pen. Still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs. Kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Next for the Padres’s, Bryce Johnson flyed to right his first time. Cut on and lifted in the air. Nabs it. Two down. Now batting the catcher Martin. Here’s the catcher to hit. Martine Maldonado popped out and foul ground first time through. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Power relievers one after another coming out of the bullpen these days. Got to be ready for that first pitch heater. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. [Music] fights it off. He’ll see another two down on fast ball. Almost got him there. [Music] Swings and misses. Struck him out. Nothing doing there for the Friars. And we’re still knotted at zero. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top six. Stepping in the slugging shortstop. Francisco Lindor. Darish back to work. Inside corner for a strike and one for Lindor being drafted out of Mont Verde Academy. He’s a guy that’s turned into one of the best all-around players in the game. Ball one there. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike 02 count instead. It’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. Out to short. Bogarts gets it to first now. One gone in the top of the six. And stepping in is the speedy Luis Anel Akuna. He hit into a double play his first time up. Swing and a miss. It’s 0 and one. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average, and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up to this point. It looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. One down, base is empty. Off the plate inside now. One to two. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Off the mark there. And that’s ball two. One out. Base is empty. Stays alive. in there. Got him looking and that one split the plate. And now it’s the polar bear Pete Lonzo scoreless here, but now he’s got to deal with a guy who’s got some power. Got to be careful when you’re talking about a hitter with this type of slug and these type of home run totals. Climb the ladder with that fast ball. That’s strike one. All tied up and we’re the top half of the sixth inside. One ball, one strike. I’ve gotten to call some incredible NLDS games here at Petco Park between the Padres’s and their fierce rivals, the LA Dodgers. NLDDS game four here in 22 when the Padres’s knocked off LA and then game four in 2024 when the Dodgers started their comeback at eventual run to the World Series. One of the great fan environments in baseball. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. So another good inning for him on the mound. Six shutout innings now. No score. Bottom of the sixth inning. Now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr. [Music] Ball one, no strikes. You can expect this hitter to be looking for something on a TE. He can get up in the air and untie this ball game. Next offering is fouled back. The 1-1 is fouled off. One, two now. Spoils a two strike pitch. And he’ll see another swinging a miss that one in the dirt. Gets to it onto first in time to get him. One away in the strikeout. That’s that classic wipeout slider below the zone right there. Just nasty. Looks like a fast ball thigh high that you got to protect the zone and then it’s just that late break that fools you and kind of makes you look silly. And here’s the first baseman, Luis Arazz. One for two. Pitch misses. And that’s ball one. Check. Swing. Called. Strike. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the sixth. A healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98, but a really good pass at the ball. Swing at a high fly ball left field. NMO calls it in and there’s two away. Third base number 13, Manny. Here’s Manny Machado now for two in this one. Swang and a miss as he was out front that time. Next offering is down low. One ball, one strike. That one missed. Got the ball. Two balls, one strike. Swings through the fast ball up in the zone. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. And that one is lifted in the air. Marte sizing this one up and puts the squeeze on that one. And that’ll do it. Back here in San Diego, Starling Marte up to hit. Hitting is all about anticipation and right now this lineup is struggling with it. Their swings are mistimed and it’s produced a few ugly cuts here and there. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen for San Diego. Jason Adam appears to be getting loose. warming up as well. High in the air out to right. Tatis hauls it in for the out. One away. So now here’s the Mets DH. Brett Batty and that misses ball one. Swings over the top of that one. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. That’s off the mark. And it’s two and two. Come on. And miss. Struck him out. So he picks up his six strike out of the ball game. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catch are on the same page right now. And now it’s Mark Ventos. There’s the strike of the knees. and ball one. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Two outs. So a foul ball makes it one and two. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Two down. Nobody on. That misses. Full countdown. Wow. This guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Outside and that is ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. He’s been in a very giving mood today. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. That does it for you, Darvish. Only two hits allowed for him. So, a great effort and we’ll be back after a quick break to tell you about the new arm. On the mound now, Jason Adam. Well, you see the RA very solid and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. Go ahead run on base. Luis Torren up now for the Mets. Adam, 33 years old, and he was a fifthround pick back in 2010. That one hit to right, Tatis. And that is that. [Music] We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Oscar Brazon. He’s been so good against lefties. Jackson Merrill now at the plate. And there’s a foul ball. rips one to right and no one can get there. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. The throw in. Safe and that’s his third hit. Having himself a really nice game at the plate. He got a pitch he could get to out front. Kept his back through the ball and didn’t pull off or roll his hands over. And that allowed him to rip that ball down the line for the double. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. So the go-ahehead run is into scoring position. Here’s Bogards now who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. That one outside ball one. As a pitcher, you know the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So you really have to execute on the mound. And the next pitch is way outside. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter’s count at 2 and 0. Two. Hit in the air out to center field. Taylor hauls it in for the outre. [Music] So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s. He’s been a great free agent side. Grow ball right side, takes it to the bag, steps on first, and it’s out number two. Well, there’s a lot writing on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher to bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. Now, here is Jake Croman work. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. First pitch misses. You have to be creative pitching against bad ball hitters. You got to add some velocity, subtract at times. Just avoiding the heart of the plate isn’t always going to be enough. Guys like this can hurt you with pitches you wouldn’t expect them to swing at. That’s outside and the count is two and0. Two down. Go ahead run and scoring position. That clips the corner. [Music] swing and a foul back and that’s out of play. on the ground of first. Alonso, he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. [Music] Ready to begin the eighth. And stepping in for New York, Tyrone Taylor. You know, this guy, a player that if he gets on base, has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths. A miss. There’s the slider and it’s one bullpen action for the Padres’s. Robert Suarez, the closer of the staff, is throwing. Next offer in there for a strike. And that is strike two. Trying to keep good speed off the bases. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. got him swinging. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly he had a four. So up next, Brandon NMO. And that one clips the corner. Swing and a drive. This one is crushed. No doubt about it. And here in the late stages, they had the lead. He rocketed that one out of here. Home run number 20 on the year. It’s one zip. [Applause] With this pitcher’s velocity, a change up is really a break for a hitter. He got a BP fast ball. Didn’t move a whole lot and he absolutely tattooed it. Francisco Lindor comes up to the plate and that one misses up and in. And that is ball one. the shortstop takes the ball. Adam maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, pitchers, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. Johnson makes the catch. Two down. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? Well, partner, every pitcher is a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken out, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. And first offering is fouled off. That’s down and in. 1-1. Two down. Base is empty, but one run across and we’re in the top of the eighth. And fires in a fast ball at 95. Two outs and a ball even a count. Really good take, especially with two strikes [Music] in the dirt. And it’s a full count. This one in the air right field Tatis and that is that Mets draw first blood thanks to this solo homer. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Stannic. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Johnson in the box now takes strike one. Stirring in the bullpen for the Mets. Brooksley the left-hander up and throwing. [Music] Looking to get the tying run on base. Right through there for a strike. [Music] towards first. Alonso takes it himself. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. That’s why you hug the lines on the corners late in the ball game like this. Positioned perfectly. Martin Maldonado the next up for the Padres’s. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. And that one upstairs, ball one. Holding on to a one-run lead near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Next offering is in for a strike. One down, base is empty. And there’s a hit. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Nice line drive to the pull side. met it out front but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. So man aboard, one down and it’s Tatis at the plate. 0 for three in this one. First offering and it just misses. Every late swing fouled all. [Music] Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. and he’ll reach second with one away. So digging in now for San Diego, Luis Aas. Golden opportunity right here. Tying run is only 90 ft away. You need to find a way to score here. No excuses with less than two outs. Don’t be surprised a ball on the ground to the corners if they come home with the baseball instead of going to first base. Not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him, but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way. Ground ball right side down the line and it’s foul. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there. On the ground, right side, steps on first for the out. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. Manny Machado to the dish for a pivotal at bat. So with second and third occupied, they go for the intentional walk. Base is now loaded and there’s a force at every base. Well, it doesn’t get much easier with this next batter, but I totally understand going with the intentional walk in that spot. He’s just too dangerous at the plate right now. And there’s a base open, so it gives you options defensively to get an out. So they bring on their closer in the eighth, Brooksley. Well, no margin for error in terms of throwing strikes with the bases loaded. Just has to execute one pitch at a time to try to get out of this. Looks like we’ve got a substitution at first and pinch running for the Padres’s. Tyler Wade, Jackson Merrill steps to the plate in a clutch situation. Three for threes, double twice and single. Boo, this has been a good one. A really good game to this point and huge opportunity with the bases loaded and all three runners on the move here. Drag bunt back towards the mound. Toss to Alonzo. That ends the frame of the bunt attempt. Pods leave him loaded. They still trail one- nothing. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Nick Paveta. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Well, one-run game. And now the first baseman, Pete Alonzo, 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. That one off the mark. One and0. Pavetta. He’s made a name for himself as a very effective reliever, but not really what you expect from a bullpen arm these days cuz he’s not out there racking up Ks. Just missed. I think it’s the deception and his ability to change arm angles and slots and give hitters different looks within one at bat. They’re never able to get comfortable. When you only see him once, a lot of times he has success. Got to be clever, too, when you don’t have that lights out stuff, right? Absolutely. You got to know what you’re able to do instead of focusing on what that hitter’s strength is. Stay with your strength and trust that you’ll come out on top upstairs. Full count now. and a swing and a miss and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Third time he struck out in this one and definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days, but when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. Marte batting with one down, takes a strike. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Yuki Matsui appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. getting cranked up as well. Foul ball. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, it’s a nice job with the cutter right there. He didn’t exactly catch the corner of the zone, but that’s one of those where the late movement probably fooled the umpire a little bit. Those guys do not have an easy job. I thought it was a good take overall. And you know, it’s one of those things where you leave it in the umpire’s hands, you just don’t know what the answer’s going to be. And that time he lost. Brett Batty will hit next. And that skips in the dirt. Two down to swinging a ground ball and foul ball. Next offering is in for a strike. That’s good pitch there. Had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat swing and a miss. Struck him out and he strikes out the side in the ninth. So they make short work of him there. 56 and seven will lead things off in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Mets one and the Padres’s nothing. Back here at Petco Park, we head to the bottom of the ninth and here comes Sander Bogarts. And that’s in the dirt. Swing at a ball lifted to center field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and there’s one down. [Music] So here’s the Padres’s DH. Gavin Sheets 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. And that drops in for a strike. A oneun lead and the home team trying to pull it out. Here’s the O2. Good job to fight that one off. [Music] Battling here as he fouls it away. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. and downstairs. [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And they’re down to their last out. Stepping in for San Diego, Jake Croninworth. [Music] And there’s a ball inside corner for a strike. And the count even at one. This guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Hit to right and that ought to do it. He puts it away and that’ll do it. The Mets claim the win here behind some great pitching and defense. When you win five in a row, the confidence just goes to another level and you start to gain this momentum and you think that you’re never going to lose a game again because things are clicking up and down the lineup. Pitchers are pitching, the team is making the plays defensively. This is the kind of feeling. It’s not going to last all season long, but you want to ride it as long as you possibly can. Perhaps push it up to double digits.
