Steelers Release Cordarrelle Patterson.. + Reaction To Chuck Clark Signing

We’re back and we got some news to react to that just dropped today. Cordell Patterson was released and he was the one that announced it. He’s the one that broke the news on Twitter. This is breaking news. Three exclamation mark emojis. Pittsburgh Steelers released old washed up Cordurell Patterson on his day off. Some people have the gift of self-awareness and others do not. I know for a fact I am not like the rest the rest of the guys in the NFL. Talk. I know I’m a top five receiver. If you are just reading this tweet, you may say, “Oh, Cordell, he has some self-awareness with where his game is right now. He’s not the Cordell Patterson of old.” In particular, if you look at these last couple seasons and how they played out for Cordell, right? Safe to say his best days are behind him. But if you dig a little deeper and see some of the aftermath from the Cordell Patterson tweet and the interactions between him and NFL reporter Mike Arafalo and him and some fans that reacted to his release, I I would say he doesn’t have that awareness that in fact he’s mocking the people that think he is washed up and doesn’t have it anymore. Mike Gafalo retweeted Cordel Patterson’s breaking news and says how you get fired on your day off. Not the end of the line for Cordel Patterson, but moving on from the Steelers and Cordell Patterson confirms that by reacting to Gareth’s tweet there. Now, in terms of the fan interaction, you got Parlay kiss saying, “Thank goodness for Cordel Patterson’s release.” And Cordurell says, “Should I ask your work to fire you?” Now, Parleus brings up a good point and says, “Well, that’s not equivalent. I didn’t ask the Steelers to fire you. I’m just rejoicing in the aftermath of you being fired, sir. Best of luck, though.” Um, I would guess Parlay Kiss, if he’s rejoicing that Cordurell Patterson got released, that he was also requesting for Cordurell Patterson uh getting released. But let’s move on. Howardsburg says, “Took long enough.” And then Cordell Patterson says, “Right. I said the same shit.” So obviously Patterson is going for humor in his way of handling being released and and going for trolling and making it seem like, you know what, Steelers, you made a mistake. You made a mistake by releasing me. And fans, you guys are wrong for thinking that I don’t have it anymore. Now I think it’s over. I I think clearly his best days are behind him, but I I mean in terms of having serious impact, not just h having like a 100 or 200 yards or being like a veteran presence in the locker room, I think, yeah, I don’t think you’re getting much more outside of that from Cordel Patterson at this point. But we did have if if we’re just going to reflect on Patterson’s tenure here, we did have a moment or two last year where you thought maybe this was really going to happen and Cordell was going to do some damage here. Now, part of the problem was injuries, but you saw in a preeason game Patterson looking like arguably the most explosive running back. May maybe I’ll just say he was more explosive than Naji because it it’s tough to beat Jaylen Warren. But Patterson was at least looking like he had more pop than Naji and that he could be like a RB1 force. But I get it. That’s preseason. Don’t put too much stock into that. But then Colts game week four. I think Patterson’s coming off of his injury. Finally healthy and our offense was lackluster. Really bad in the first half. Nagi was looking slow and then Patterson started to get some carries and we drove the ball down the field with ease. Patterson it seemed like he was getting 5 10 yards a pop was a breath of fresh air. Whole new dynamic added to the offense with CP 84 out there but then he gets hurt again and the only other times we’ve seen him was kick returning where he was lackluster. He was below average by all of NFL standard given the the uh catches that he made and the return yardage that he got. It was just like and then running the ball and being uh part of that running back room didn’t get many more carries after that. He did catch that one touchdown was it in one of the Ravens games late in the season. That was really it, man. didn’t really get much from Cordel Patterson this year, but there was a moment or two where you’re just like, “Oh, wow. Maybe there is some gas still left in the tank.” I can’t knock the signing. I can’t knock the attempt because of Patterson’s relationship with Arthur Smith and what Patterson was able to do uh for those couple seasons as their main feature running back. I know they had they had kind of a rotation going, but like for two years Patterson was kind of like their number one and he was versatile catching it out the back field. He was just a really nice Swiss Army knife, but had a career year with Arthur Smith. Two career years with Arthur Smith. The one was much better than the other, but still like he he was like a really legit running back. And before that, he’s he was just kind of known as a gadget guy. No one could really find a definitive role for him on offense. You thought the Vikings with them drafting him way back in the day, first round receiver was going to be his thing, but then really didn’t happen. Then he became a return specialist, one of the best return men in the history of the league. But then Arthur Smith unlocked something with Patterson and I think that was in his early 30s, too. It was just out of nowhere. Patterson had this crazy ass season with the Falcons and then followed it up with a decent season after that. But then his last year in Atlanta was lackluster. And then we signed him to see if he still had it anymore and Arthur Smith, Cordell Patterson could rekindle what took place. But just didn’t happen. Just didn’t happen, man. I mean, it was it was worth the effort. But yeah, I just didn’t know in terms of Patterson’s role here for this season. I just didn’t see it anymore. After we signed Kenneth Gainwell, we obviously still got Jaylen Warren. We drafted Caleb Johnson. Patterson’s not better than any of those three running backs. And then with Gainwell being able to return kicks, it’s like I’d rather I’d rather have Gainwell based off of what Patterson did last year. Now, could all of a sudden he turn back the clock? If he’s healthy, he’s he’s looking like vintage Cordell Patterson, I guess, but I just don’t see it anymore. I don’t Yeah. one of those uh kind of weird signings, big name where you’re like this was just the wrong time. It just Yeah, it wasn’t meant to be. Low risk, high reward was worth it. Just didn’t mesh though. Didn’t mesh whether it was injuries, whether it was fit. And it’s happened before. And it’s happened actually I think weirdly kind of frequently over these last few years, five, six years with some of the turnover we’ve been dealing with like Melvin Ingram is one of the names that I think of kind of like this just didn’t work out. Morgan Bernett, Pat P. Yeah, there’s I don’t know. There’s maybe some other names I’m forgetting, but this falls in line with that where in 1015 years we’re going to look back and say Cordell Patterson was a Steeler for a year. Yeah. randomly. Allan Robinson, that’s that’s kind of another one. Van Jefferson, same thing in a way. But, uh, yeah, that was today’s news. Corduro Patterson released. Now, another move that took place, uh, not as recently as the Patterson release because that happened today, but while I was gone, while I was taking some time off, was the Steelers signing Chuck Clark. So, thought it’d be appropriate to react to that. Yeah. signed him to I I would assume it’s a I didn’t see the exact details, but just a one-year vet minimum type of deal. Obviously, with Australia, make Fitzpatrick, there was an opening at the safety spot in terms of the depth chart because top two guys still are probably going to be Juan Thornhill and Deshawn Elliott, but after that, it’s Miles Kibru. And Miles Kibru is a special teams guy. not you don’t want him playing the majority of your starting safety snaps out there or or a big portion of safety snaps in your defense. You you don’t want that. So, I mean, Sebastian Castro, I know people are high on him, but he’s an undrafted rookie free agent. It was fair for the Steelers to do some due diligence and bring in another guy for the safety room. Who that was going to be eventually, we had our questions. you know, is it Justin Simmons, potentially Julian Blackman? There’s a lot of other names that are out there that I wasn’t really too high on. But the funniest thing is whenever I was looking for these names, I swear Chuck Clark wasn’t on the spot spot rack available safety free agents because maybe I would have included him. Now, hindsight’s 2020 since we actually signed him. Maybe I would have said he’s one of the three guys I’d be cool with cuz it was really just two. It was Julian Blackman and Justin Simmons. And I said, “All the other guys like Marcus Williams, Jordan Puyer, Jordan Whitehead,” I’m like, “No, I’m I’m good on that. I feel like those guys are wash. I don’t think we really need to go down that path.” But if it was Chuck Clark, maybe I wouldn’t have included him in the Justin Simmons, Julian Blackman category of, yeah, I I think he’s still got it because played with the Jets last year, didn’t play bad with them. Now, in 2023, he suffered an ACL, was out for that whole season, but then was a really solid player for the Ravens. like we’re familiar with him. He was a guy that’s out there starting a ton of games and was good. Like you’re not thinking of him being like a Pro Bowler or anything, but tackles, gets you around 80, 90. I think even one season he got up to 100 tackles. Uh makes plays, does the right things, and is like a legitimate starting safety in this league. So, if you’re talking about your third guy, potentially top guy because Mike Tomlin’s talking about Chuck Clark actually doing some free safety stuff. He’s been mostly a strong strong safety in his career, but Mike Tolman’s going to see test out in training camp and preseason if Chuck Clark could do more free safety work like in the back of the defense like trying to do some of that Minka stuff and you know what free safeties typically do cuz Juan Thornnehill he could do it. Is is he most equipped for that? Is his play style best fit for that? I I feel like he’s a little bit more of a strong safety guy that you want up in the box closer to the line of scrimmage. Not bad in coverage though, but but just as a free roaming guy down on the back side of the field, I don’t know about that for Juan Thornnehill. And we know Deshawn Elliott’s game isn’t really that either. So, can could that be Chuck Clark? Would it have been better for us to just go with Justin Simmons if that’s what we’re trying to get Chuck Clark to do? I don’t know. I I feel like based off some of these other reports in training camp and how Tomman really is utilizing Jaylen Ramsey’s versatility and doing all these different sets and doing a bunch of different stuff on defense that we haven’t seen before that he doesn’t want to rock the boat with like the hierarchy of, you know, guys in the secondary because if you sign Justin Simmons, then maybe you’re not able to utilize Jaylen Ramsay as much at safety or slot that you originally had planned for Chuck Clark doesn’t really do that for you, but it’s like if Chuck Clark is able to do some of that free safety stuff. Um, he at least provides some depth there, provides a guy that that could be out there at any point, any given time. You got a Chuck Clark, you got a Juan Thornhill, you got a Deshawn Elliott, and then obviously we know our top three quarterbacks along with a Beanie Bishop, a Cory Trace. Like there, who knows? Who knows, man, what like what this Steelers team will be able to pull off on defense. And it is up to Terrell Austin and Mike Tolman to figure it out. But based off the other reports coming out of training camp, it does seem like we just want to be throwing a ton of different looks, ton of different packages, personnel at offense to try to keep quarterbacks and play callers on their toes, which is a good thing. Like this is something we’ve been, you know, talking about for the last three, four years. like let’s just stop going out there and lining up and enabling the offenses to look at our defense because we still we have the same we had the same problem on offense where we’re predictable. But I feel like our defense has gotten to that point too where our defense is a little bit more predictable these days and people just look at oh yeah Steelers doing the Steelers stuff. We’re not really confused. We know exactly what to expect. So yeah, I think this uh this Chuck Clark signing could go handinhand with that. He plays a little free safety. obviously is also a physical safety too with the tackling. I think it goes hand inhand with what the Steelers are trying to do here for this 2025 defense. And you know, we can’t help ourselves by recycling AFC North players and and former Raven players. That that seems to also be a trend with some of these Steeler signings and Chuck Clark fits the bill with that. We needed the depth no matter what. We needed the depth. low risk, medium to high reward resigning here or or signing here. Doesn’t hurt us at all. Like the move. Definitely like it. Um nothing wrong with it at all actually. I Yeah, I think it’s it solid move. Um but I’ll I I got a few more things I did want to talk about with the Chuck Clark signing. Um some other stuff, but I’m going to save that for another video potentially probably early tomorrow. And then yeah, they’re going to be doing the padded practices and we’ll we’ll react to that stuff either later on Tuesday or for like a Wednesday morning show. So that’s how things are going to be scheduled out over the next couple days because there is still some more stuff I want to talk about from when I was off, but I think it would be better just to do a new video for that. But I hope you guys enjoyed. Let me know your thoughts on the Cordell Patterson getting released news and Chuck Clark being a new Pittsburgh Steeler. Stay chilling. Here we go, Steelers. base.

  1. You see he cried oh X about being released "on his day off" like sure next time i hope whatever team signs him they make him come in thinking hes gonna go work and then drop the bomb shell on him

  2. The problem with Cordell Patterson was that he himself admitted that he came into training camp out of shape. That might have worked for him when he was younger however, as you get older, you don’t recover as fast so it was kind of on him coming into training camp out of shape. He needs to wake up and come into camp in shape at this age

  3. Basically we didn’t think he could beat out Trey Sermon for Rb4 either. If he was still an asset in special teams then yeah maybe he could hang around. Wish we coulda had him during his Falcons era, wish we coulda seen him longer before he hurt his ankle, we saw one or two flashes while he was here. But his place just isn’t here right now, maybe Dallas?

  4. Notice the color of all the older guys who you said didn’t work out….. so would say that about your guy but he is not the same color is he??

  5. you must really suck to get fired on your day off. just take the 1 million dollars the Steelers gave you last year and enjoy it. Frankly I am surprised you lasted this long given your performance.

  6. IDK all the rules, but being that he was held onto so long..did he not get a $ bump for surviving past the start of the league year in early March??. Possibly so, but he won't disclose that.

  7. Patterson was better than people give him credit for… Justin Fields ended his Steeler tenure. Patterson would legit point out wide open targets for Fields, just for Fields to panic and throw it to CP even when double and tripled. Fields’ bad decision making is what caused him to get hurt against the Colts. He was pointing and yelling to throw to wide open CA3. Fields then hit CP who got killed for a loss on the play. That is why Fields was benched. Because he couldn’t read the field at all. It’s a shame Patterson was a casualty from that. Wish you luck CP, you deserved better 🫡
