MLB LIVE🔴 San Francisco Giants vs Pittsburgh Pirates – Jul 28, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
From Oracle Park in San Francisco, we’ve got a perfect night for baseball on the show. It’s the Pittsburgh Pirates taking on the San Francisco Giants. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. just about set to go. And towing the slab in this one, Justin Verlander. And as usual with him, singing, I think we can expect plenty of strikeouts. Yeah, Boog. He’s racked up over 3,000 strikeouts in his career. So, expect to see more of the same in this one. And here’s the first baseman, Spencer Horowitz. In there at the knees. And that’s how this game gets started. No balls, one strike. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. O2 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. De throws on to first. One out in the top of the first. We take a check of the Pirates lineup put together by manager Derek Shelton. Not the highest team batting average for this squad. They’re down towards the bottom of the league in total hits and singing because of that they don’t score a ton. Yeah. And Boo, I’m looking for a little better performance out of them today. I mean, if they’re going to be dangerous, if they’re going to be able to create scoring opportunities, they’re going to have to start making some individual adjustments. A lot of players in this lineup probably aren’t happy with how they’ve hit the ball so far. So today’s a chance to get something going just off the outside edge and the count is one and one. One out. Base is empty. Up the middle. Adamus sends it to first. Quick start here this evening. Two out. Top of the first. Brian Reynolds here. Verlander over 200 career wins. He joined the team as a free agent. First offering and it just misses and there’s a ball. Two out. Space is empty. Close but called a ball. Ball three. And that’s ball four. Take your base. Close pitch there. But you got to forget about that call if you’re out on the mound. You can’t let it affect you going forward. You’ve got to get out of the inning first and then if you want to be frustrated, take it out in the dugout. Now Nick Gonzalez swinging a popup foul on a play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Reynolds off of first with two away. Right through there for a strike. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Nabs it. And that’s the third out. Pirates leave one. Now it’s the Giants turn. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in San Francisco. And on the mound for the Pirates, Bailey Falter. What should we keep an eye on here? And a guy like this is going to keep you in the ball game. He’s going to go out there, compete. Not going to see a whole lot of flare and flash, but he’s going to hand it over to the bullpen at some point. And if you’ve been able to score a few runs, you’ll be in it late. So, we’ll see if he’s able to do that for his club in this one. Elliot Ramos, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. close but called the ball and it’s two and 0. Good spot there but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. That’s down and in. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. Man aboard. And here is De’s. That’s off the mark. One and0. And another ball. And that misses as well. and ball four, two aboard. Two walks in the first has to be some cause for concern. I mean, you’re talking about a guy you want to pitch deep into the ball game. It’s not going to help with the pitch count right there. They can’t afford to hand out free bases at this rate. Willie Adam stands in and a big swing and a miss. First and second here, no outs. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Well, Boo, early on in this one, having a hard time getting settled in. He’s not showing control to throw strikes and let alone to throw it where he wants in the strike zone. This could be a tough one for him. And the fast ball misses outside for a ball and it’s two and one. And that one fouled off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. No outs. Runners at first and second. Not close with that one. Three and two now. Matt Chapman in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Battling here as he fouls it away. And that one in the air center field. Cruz under it, squeezes it, and there’s one away. Here’s the Giants lineup. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton. And even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation, and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. On the ground to short, could be two. Touches the bag for one. Not in time at first. It’s a fieldielder’s choice. Mike Estreky up here. This bat might not seem like a huge deal right now, but baseball is a game of moments, and what happens here could change everything. Just missed and fouled off. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. See if you can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. Two on, two outs. Swing and a ball popped in the air and it drops in. And the Giants score first. It’s one zip. Well, he comes through clutch with the RBI single. That was big. That ball right there landed in what they call the no man’s land. Meaning, it’s not really a spot on the field where you can expect anyone to get to it easily. I mean, it’s a tough play going back for the shortstop, but also for the outfielders trying to come in. They got to go a long way as well. Casey Schmidt, the next Giant to hit. Fast is outside. At this point, the clean inning is over. Got to settle in, focus on the hitter, and get out of it with minimal damage. That one found hard the other way. It’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game, but here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on. Let’s see if they can cash in. Next offering is down low. popped up. Foul territory behind the plate and that’s a foul ball. And a good eye there. Really good take especially with two strikes. Dominic Smith waits to bat for the Giants. First and second, two down. Swinging a ground ball up the middle and there’s a hit. The run comes in to score from second. It’s an RBI single. It’s two nothing. Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. She didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. First and second, two outs. Dom Smith stands in and there’s a foul ball. laboring here about to throw his 30th pitch of the inning. Foul ball there. Foul ball still 0 and two. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. That one is absolutely belted way back there. And it’s out of here into the arcade section for a home run. And this place is rocking. And they throw three on the board. It’s five zip. Well, Brew, clearly some frustration out there on the mound right now. I mean, that ball was so close to going foul. Would have been a long strike, but instead batter gets rewarded. Did a nice job of getting to the pitch and hitting it hard enough to get over the fence. Patrick Bailey in now. Takes ball one off the plate. Well, it’s not the inning he was planning on to begin this start, but you’ve got to find a way to shake things off and give your team some length and put up some zeros. And another ball. Slider clips the zone. Back door him with the breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Ripped to short. Connor Falefa throws to first in time. Inning over, although plenty of damage done. One more look at the big blow for the Giants. Bye-bye, baby. A three-run homer and the lead is now 5 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here at Oracle Park. Second inning, set to go. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. Verlander back to work. That’s outside. Ball one. I’m sure he likes the 5-0 lead and the rund support, but he’s sat around a lot since warming up in the pin, and you’d hate to see a guy not have his rhythm to go out there and have a great start. On the ground, right side, slings to first. Lead off man retired here in the second. Tommy B. Here’s Tommy Fam. He’s been on fire at the dish lately. Can make it a fivegame hitting streak with a knock in this one. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. And it’s fouled away. and one and two. One, two. And that’s downstairs and outside. Ball. Full count. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. out to center. Matoss makes the grab and that’s the inning. Nothing across here this half. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Giants five and the Pirates nothing. Bottom of the second. Here’s the center fielder, Luis Mtos. Luis, just missed. Singi, he wasn’t real sharp in the first. Got hit around, but really more so didn’t throw a ton of strikes. Well, he’s just got to find a way to settle down. He was clearly fighting himself out there. Not really finding the strike zone, walking batters. So, we’ll see if he can get back on track and fill up the zone a little bit more. Next offering is in for a strike. And that drops in for a strike. Here’s a 2-2 count. Swing and a hard hit liner up the middle and a base hit. So he gets a hit after a long battle with the pitcher. Here’s Elliot Ramos. He reached out to walk his first time and downstairs. 10. Machos on at first. Nobody out. And that misses off the outside edge. Two balls, one strike. Here comes the pitch. Runner breaks for second. Next offering is fouled back and down on strikes. One away. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Snap throw to first. Moss dives back in safely. De swings through that one as he comes to the plate for the second time today. Action in the pen down there. Johan Ramirez up and throwing. The 01 tap foul at the plate. Owen two now. Slider misses outside. Man at first. One away. And that skips in the dirt out towards right center. That’s well struck and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. They add on as the run scores all the way from first. Everything came together for him. You see a ball come off the bat like that, you know, it was pretty much a perfect swing. And for me, you I start wondering and I’m looking on the computer, what was the exit velocity this time? 106. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Bailey Falter won’t go any further tonight and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So, the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Johan Ramirez gets handed the rock out of the pen. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. One out, runner at second. And now the shorts stop Willie Adamus and first offering is fouled off. Here’s the pitch to Adamus. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. One out and a runner at second. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Well, that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike. And that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can become when they’re up against an 02 count. You’re just hoping for a mistake somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to. But right there, he was clearly anxious. He was swinging when the ball left the hand. Chapman at the plate with two away. Swings through that one. Next offering is fouled back. Right-handed reliever. Got him looking. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. One run, a pair of hits, no errors, and one left on. We play two full. It’s the Giants six and the Pirates nothing. And we’re back onto the third inning. Stepping in Joey Bart. Right side hard hit. Smith takes it himself. Leadoff man retired here in the third. Short stopah. Here is Isaiah Ker Falefa. Francisco in for a strike. Going one. He quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. One down. Base is empty. Ball one line to left. Ramos pulls it down and there’s two gone. And now the first baseman Spencer Horowitz 0 for one so far. and ball one. I can’t play around with him here. It’s a six-run lead at this point. Got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot. Next pitch is outside. Fast ball for a strike. 2-1 swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center. Hauls it into Indiana. Nothing doing here this half. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Giants six and the Pirates nothing. as we go to the last of the third. And now the right fielder Mike Yremsky. Pitch misses outside and that is ball one. Well, these Giants really impressed me with the quality of their at bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. They jumped all over the starter and knocked him out of the game early. He just was never able to settle in and the damage was done by the time he got the hook. Swinging a miss. Now two and one. I mean, when you’re chasing the opposing starter in the first inning or two, that’s just such a tone setter for the game and it puts the other team back on their heels and it instills a lot of confidence in your lineup from top to bottom. The 3-1. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Looked like a questionable call in that spot. He even seemed a little surprised it went his way at the plate. But as a hitter, you’ll take that all day. Mad at first. Now the third baseman Casey Schmidt RBI single his last time up. Hit in the air left field. Fam makes the catch and there’s one gone. Now batting first base Dominic. Now it’s Dominic Smith. He’s already homered in this game. There’s the strike. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. Two strikes in the dirt. Blocked. way inside. Gets away and the runner holds swing and a high-fly ball left field. Coming on is Fam to make the play. That’s out number two. Up next for the Giants. And now the catcher comes up to him, Patrick Bailey. And Chris, his big strength is defense. But it is interesting in today’s world of baseball compared to when you played, a good defensive catcher is considered differently. Whatever you get offensively is a bonus, but he’s got to put the fingers down. He’s got to present pitches to the umpire. They’re going to help his pitcher get more strikes. I think the other component is putting down the finger that the pitcher wants to throw and being on the same page. And that’s something that this guy does really well. Gets in sync with his pitchers. in the air left field down the line and that’s a fair ball. Throw in holds the lead runner at second. Two on now with two away. Luis Moss digs in now. Singled and scored his first time in for a strike. One-1. Boo. His preparation is off the charts. I was down in the clubhouse today trying to find him just to pick his brain a little bit. He’s so buried in that video room it’s hard to get a chance to talk to him. That one finds the zone and two now. swing and a miss and he struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. No runs, a hit, two left. Three innings complete. It’s the Giant six and the Pirates nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Chambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Andrew McCutchen. And first offering is fouled off. McCutchen goes 5′ 11 in 38 years old. He’s usually in right field, but today he’s That one ran inside. Almost got him. Now one out to right. Yensky and out number one on the grab. Brian Bray coming to the plate now. Walked his first time. missing inside and it’s one and0. The Pirates still looking for their first hit in this one. Next pitch is outside. Just missed. and he walked him on four pitches. Second walk of the game for him. And he’s been really patient at the plate. A game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. So now it’s the four-hole hitter. Nick Gonzalez for one with a fly out. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Soft contact in the air and a base hit right there. And now to a board. He’s in there. He beat it. He beat it down in the count. battling to stay alive and just a nice job that put it in play. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. And now the center fielder O’Neal Cruz. That’s in there. Strike one. So O’Neal Cruz is named after Paul O’Neal. That was his father’s idol in baseball. So he named his son O’Neal. In 2022, they finally met each other when the Pirates played the Yankees in New York. And I’m sure that was a moment that O’Neal Cruz will never forget. Brothers at the corners, one away. Top half of inning number four. Next offering way off the plate. Inside just missed foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming and they’ll do it again. Reynolds the runner at third. Gonzalez over at first. So one away. Swings and misses. Out number two. Up next for the Pirates, Tommy Fam. He struck out swinging at his first at bat. Just missed. One ball, no strikes. Swinging a foul out of play. Runners on first and third. Two away. That one ripped. Base hit and a run in to score. Throw in holds that trail runner at third base. They’re at the corners with two away. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Now batting Key Brian Hayes and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. That one is upstairs. Runners at the corners with two outs. Now a highf fly ball out to left center. Ramos on the move makes the grab and that is that. But the RBI single pushes across a run and this is now a 61 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here in San Francisco now, the left fielder, Elliot Ramos. Right through there for a strike. 01. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. 02 struck him out. Really fooled him with a breaking ball there. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. DeS stands in here. Leaves that one off the inside. No, with the shift on pits right into it. Horowitz takes it to the bag and a couple of quick outs. Up next for the short stop. Two down, base is empty and digging in for San Francisco. Willie Adamus bowl for two in this one. Ball one, no strikes. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That misses two and0. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. Hard on the ground to first. Horowitz steps on the bag. Giants go in order. Nothing doing there for San Francisco. They still lead it though 6-1. Back here at Oracle Park and here’s the catcher, Joey Bart. Verlander back to work. That one clips the outside corner. It’s 0 and one. You know, these Pirates just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. They’re trying to find ways to drive the ball with some authority, but it’s just not happening for him so far. Zero extra base hits in the game. So, it’s been tough for him to get anything going. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. Throw to first in time to get him. One away in the strikeout. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging. Now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days, that’s a devastating combination. Isaiah Connor Falefa up to the plate outside and that’s ball one. Sometimes you have to keep chipping away until you break through. But it’s a lot easier to put runs on the board when you have guys in scoring position because they put themselves there. inside. And that’s ball two. Two count. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. There’s a line drive to left field. Ramos tracks it down for the out. Wow. He looked like he was running before the ball was hit. Didn’t have much time as that was a hard hit liner, but a nice job of covering a lot of ground in a short amount of time. Horowitz in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Just off the inside edge, fouls one off. Two and two. The Giants leading by five and we’re at the top of the fifth. That one missed. Full count. And down on strikes he goes. Make four strikeouts for him on the bump today. So they make short work of him there. Last half of the fifth coming up, it’s the Giants six and the Pirates won. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s a cleanup hitter for the Giants. Matt Chapman Chapman. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. All these Giants putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. There’s the strike. Two balls, one strike. Outside low. And that’s ball three. And that’s in for a strike. Full count. Swing and a miss. And he chases that one in the dirt. Bart down to first with it. Got him. One away on the strike out. Here comes Mikey to the plate. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Base is empty. One away. Last half of inning number five. Giants. Swinging a ground ball towards first but fouled. One down. Base is empty. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Two outs. Space is empty. Casey Schmidt, the next Giant to hit. And first offering is fouled off. Called strike right there. Giants. Good eye in that spot. That’s where you want it. It’s a good miss. Ball. Two strikes. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. And that one is downstairs. Two balls, two strikes to count. Two outs. Got him. Swinging for the strike out. And he strikes out the side in the fifth. Giants are down 123. They lead it though 6-1. And we’re back. Top six. And now the DH. And Andrew McCutchen. Fast for a strike at 95. If you’re not ready for that pitch, you’re just going to swing and miss or pop it up. waste the at bat. If you’re going to let it go, you better be ready to swing it. That one fouled off. Down to the dirt, swing, and a miss. Catcher has it, fires the first, gets him one away on a drop third strike. Just overmatched on that fast ball right there. And it wasn’t like he was set up for it by something off speed earlier in the at bat. Just came right after him with three straight and he had no answer for it. At the plate for Pittsburgh, Brian Reynolds. That one missing inside. 10. So a foul ball makes it one and two. One down, base is empty. Foul ball still a one and two count. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. BS another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Chris, third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter. Yeah, he’s been very frugal today. Economical with the pitch count. Two down, base is empty. Nick Gonzalez, the next pirate to hit. And the first pitch is drilled in the air out to center. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And that is that. Offense held in check there. 789 two up in the home half of the inning. It’s the Giants six and the Pirates won. Andrew Heeney comes on now. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. And here’s the first baseman, Dominic Smith. He’s already homered here in this one. And first offering is fouled off. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. And that’s a foul ball. 0 and two now and misses inside. activity in the bullpen. Number 47, the rookie righthander is getting loose. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fouls that fast ball back. Hit in the air right field. hauls it in for the out. One away. Patrick, here’s the catcher, Patrick Bailey. One for two. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Reynolds makes the play. Two away. Up next for the Giants, Luis Mtos getting ready to hit. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. First off, And it just misses one ball. No strikes. And there’s the strike. Two down. Nobody on here in the bottom of the six. Puts it in the air out towards left center. Fan under it. Brings it in. And that ends the inning. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. We’re through six full. It’s the Giants six, and the Pirates won. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the center fielder, O’Neal Cruz. Changing speeds has this lineup completely off balance in this one. We’ve seen a lot of mistime swings and it’s been a challenge for these hitters to get their rhythm right. This pitcher has done a good job of disrupting the hitters timing with the mix of pitches and changing speeds. You want to keep that front foot inconsistent for the batter. Their swings are hesitant and that’s exactly what you want on the mound. Next offering upstairs. Two-1. Swinging a ball. Hammered left field. That one’s carrying into the bleachers and gone. Home run. His 17th of the year. And they cut into the lead. It’s 6-2. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching. and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Always scary for a pitcher when a guy can take a fast ball down the middle and hit it to the opposite field. No holes in a swing like that. And that time that ball was hit hard. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Verlander done in this one. And he exits with a nice lead. Threw the ball well and we’ll have a new pitcher when we come back. So they turn to the veteran pitcher in this spot, Tyler Rogers. And he’s got a nice lead to work with. So he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. So next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Tommy Fam. That pitch in for a strike. 01. Always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Rogers, a 6-3 righty, 180 lbs and he was a 10th round pick back in 2013. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the top half of inning number seven. And that one a little below the knees and it’s one and two. swing and a miss. Struck him out. Went back to the slider and it was a good idea. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate. You know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Hayes batting with one down. Takes the strike. Signs of movement in the Giants bullpen. Matt Gage getting ready to come in for Bob Melvin. Rodriguez, a hard throwing right-hander up as well. Foul ball. One down. Base is empty. Stays alive. ball. That missed by a lot. Now two and two out towards right center field. Yensky makes the grab. Two down. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Bart in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Keeps the attack going with a foul ball. to the right side. Des third out and that ends the frame. Bucks draw a bit closer on this long ball. It’s now 62. set for the last half of the seventh. Now it’s the Giants leadoff hitter Elliot Ramos and first offering is fouled off and they’re swinging a miss. on the ground right side and that’s just foul misses and the count one and two gets a piece and stays fly and there’s a fly ball deep right field. This one could be trouble. Makes the turn and heads for second. Makes it safely. It’s a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh. Well, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now, there are several ways that they can get this run across. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Now it’s the second baseman, Rafael Des. There’s a swing and a drive. That’s down. One hops off the wall. Runner from second crosses the plate. It’s seven to two. Comes through with the RBI. fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. Willie Adamus will hit next and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. just missed. Next pitch is outside. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound. Getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. One on, nobody out. A run in here. The bottom of the seventh. There’s the strike. And it remains two and two. And there’s a P and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Chappie steps to the dish to take his cuts. 0 for three in this one. in for a strike 0 and one. De leads off second with one gone in the inning. Out towards left center. coming on his fam to make the play. And up next for the Giants, Mike Estreky. That one close rule to ball and that’s ball one. Basketball for a strike. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. Little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an off speed pitch on this next one. foul ball left side. He’ll see another man on second. Two down and down on strikes. And that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. Giants get a run on the RBI double. It’s now a 72 ball game. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Randy Rodriguez. And you know, bullpen guys can struggle sometimes when they’re called upon with big leads because it just doesn’t have the same intensity as a tight game. So, we’ll see how sharp he is. Your mental toughness matters in situations like this as well. Isaiah Ker Falefa now at the plate and there’s the strike. Good heater at 98. Cold night like tonight, last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end trying to find that sweet spot on the bat. Tell you what, you’re going to be trying to catch things out front. So off speed pitches may be a good compliment to that fast ball. Going to count one and two. The shorts stop takes a ball. Still two and two after the foul ball. San Francisco. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another fouled off and they’ll do it again. Two-2 now. Popped up. Foul territory behind the plate. Bailey makes the grab. One down. Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. And they look really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as a hitter. Spencer Horowitz the next to hit. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Swing and a miss. That one at 99. It’s 0 and one. Ball one there. Movement in the bullpen. Matt Gage, the young lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Check. Swing. Hit on the ground. Schmidt. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Nice job of deception right there by the pitcher. Got the hitter out there a little bit. couldn’t check his swing and induces a nice little ground out. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit. And a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there and he grounds one to the right side. Devils over to first and cuten is out and the Pirates go one, two, three. Nothing doing here for Pittsburgh. They’re down five. It’s seven to2. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, number 47. And he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one in innings, so he’ll be tough to get to. Here’s the third baseman, Casey Schmidt. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. No balls, one strike. Now fly ball to right center. Cruz calls it in and there’s one away. And now the first baseman, Dominic Smith. First offering misses badly for ball one. Activity in Pittsburgh’s bullpen. Caleb Ferguson, a lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. One down. Base is empty. And another ball. That’s inside now. Three and one. pulls the string with the change up. Struck him out. This guy will throw any pitch in any count. 3-2. He goes off speed, gets the out. And now the catcher comes up to him. Patrick Bailey, one for three. Pitch misses. One and0. gets the outside corner with that one. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. struck him out looking. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Giants seven and the Pirates two. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mouth. Landon RP, left-handed batter at the plate, and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. Ryan Reynolds digs in now. Couple of walks and a strike out. It delivers outside. swinging a ground ball. Oh, look at the stop. And that’s a base hit despite a great defensive effort. It doesn’t really matter where you are in the lineup. Your job is to get on base and try to start a rally if you’re leading off an inning. So, an infield single does the job right there. Now, we’ll see if they can make something happen. And now it’s going to be Nick Gonzalez. That one in the dirt. And that is ball one. Well, the laidoff man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. And a foul ball. off the mark there and a count two and one. Action in the San Francisco bullpen. Matt Gage getting ready to come in for Bob Melvin. swing and a miss as he was late that time. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Ground ball left side. Could be two. One at second on Smith. Two. Well, that’s a huge balling play to get the double play defensively. Just one more guy to get this save for the closer. Last chance now for the Pirates. Up next for the Pirates, O’Neal Cruz. That clips the zone. That’s strike one. Just missed. The Giants leading by five here in the top of the ninth. RP is just one strike away. That one rifted right center field and an automatic double as it hops the fence. Well, there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that. You get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a throw or getting your uniform dirty. And now you’re just looking for the next guy to kind of do the same thing. Maybe put one in the gap so you can jog home as well. And now Tommy Fan swing and a line drive and a base hit up the middle coming home. He will score and it’s an RBI single. It’s seven to three. Kean Hayes the next Pirate to hit. Three flyyous already. He’s 0 for three. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Go straight. Two outs. And that’s in the dirt. And the count is 2 and 0. Yeeha! Just missed. Fan leads off first with two down to the inning. So now two on and two outs. Not what he wanted to do there, Boo. That keeps this inning alive and gives this offense a good chance to cut into their deficit. Manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Landon Roof done for the night and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Camilo Dval on to try and close it out, but I can’t imagine any save is an easy one. You’re holding a small lead on the scoreboard and you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats they can. So, it’s always high stress. Let’s see what he’s got here to try and close it out. First and second, two outs. This is Joey Bart. 10 in the dirt. Runners stay put. That’s ball one. Two on, two outs. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. One strike. Squirts away a little bit. On the inside corner for a strike. Hit on the ground softly to short. Adamus and that’ll do it. Well, this team was ready from the first pitch of the ball game. Swinging the bats, scoring runs, just very aggressive. I feel like they set the tone and that tone created a momentum that took them all the way to the finish line. Nice win today. 73 is how this one ends for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
