MLB LIVE🔴 San Francisco Giants vs Pittsburgh Pirates – Jul 28, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
John Shan be with you alongside Chris Singleton. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Pittsburgh Pirates taking on the San Francisco Giants. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about to get underway. Our starter in this one, Justin Verlander. And as usual with him singing, I think we can expect plenty of strikeouts. Yeah, Boog. He’s racked up over 3,000 strikeouts in his career. So, expect to see more of the same in this one. And now the first baseman, Spencer Horowitz. splits the plate and we are underway. One strike high in the air out to right. Yensky sizing this one up and out number one on the grab. Here’s a Pirates lineup now and no doubt a big factor in this series so far. Brian Reynolds and he’s leading them in runs batted in this season which tells me this guy is able to slow things down when it seems like there’s a little bit of pressure and he’s looking at as an opportunity to do damage. You know, a lot of guys they see runners on base and they get big, they feel like all this pressure, I’ve got to get these runs in, but somehow he seems to settle into these situations. So, watch out when he comes to the plate. Andrew McCutchen in the box now. No balls in a strike. This one in the air. Bailey, two away. Batting third, right fielder Brian Reynolds. Brian Reynolds here. And the first pitch is drilled in the air out to center. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And that is that. Onto the bottom of the first. No score. Back here at Oracle Park and towing the slab here, Bailey Falter. Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. And digging in for San Francisco, Elliot Ramos. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. Knee high. That’s in for a strike. First, Horowitz and he handles it himself for the out. Now we take a peek at the Giants lineup. This is a veteran le lineup right here. A lot of players with plenty of experience. Singy. Yeah, no doubt about that. Boo. These players have been around the game for a long time and they may not have the flash that they once did, but they’ve got the wisdom to be able to understand different situations, be able to think with the opponent and sometimes in front of the opponent. And you always seem to see a team like this. They come to the ballpark. They know how to get down to business and they understand what the job is at hand. And another ball. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And it’s through for a hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Willis stands in. He’s been tearing it up at the plate recently, batting over 300 so far this month. There’s the strike. Ripped to first, caught. Takes it to the bag himself and doubles him off. We played an inning, no score. Back here in San Francisco. Second inning, set to go at the plate for Pittsburgh. Nick Gonzalez. That one in there across the letters. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. The 1-1 is fouled off. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Foul ball still a one and two count. Here comes the pitch. Swang at a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance. Hits the fence into second easily with a leadoff double. Everything came together for him. Absolutely blasted that one into the gap, but just didn’t have quite enough to clear the wall out there. Maybe a little more elevation under it and it carries over, but that’s a swing you’ll be happy with every time. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. Sliced hard but foul. Well, Boo, I know it’s obvious, but you just can’t miss Cruz when he’s on the field. I’ve never seen a player like him. I mean, he’s 6’7, weighs 220 lbs, and is the tallest shortstop in the history of Major League Baseball. Swing and a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. And he makes the catch. Runner tags at second and he’s in safely at third with one out. Batting six, left fielder Tommy Fam. Here’s Tommy Fam. He’s done a great job making contact recently. Can make it a fivegame hitting streak with a knock in this one. Swing and a ball lifted left field. Squeezes it. Runner tags from third to the plate. save and it’s one- nothing. Sometimes all you got to do is your job and don’t over complicate things. Keep it simple. Runner at third, less than two outs. Put the ball in play and a nice job with the sack fly. Now batting Kean Hayes. Fast ball is outside. He didn’t want to give up that run, but he did. Got the fly ball. Sack fly out. Now it’s time to attack these other guys. Get your team back in the dugout. that catches the top part of the zone and it’s a ball and a strike. Next offering is fouled back. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the top of the second. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Now a high-fly ball out to left center. Matoss on the move. He makes the grab and that’ll do it. One run, one hit, no errors, and no one left on. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Pirates one and the Giants nothing. And we’re back. Bottom half of inning number two. And now here’s the veteran DH, Matt Chapman. Chapman. Chapman gets a piece there. And that one hammered. That’s back there. And it’s into the bleacher. It’s out of here. He’ll touch them all. His second home run of the series. And we’re all square. It’s 1-1. Pitchers are taught to keep the ball down so that you don’t get hurt. But unfortunately on that one, he made a pretty good pitch in terms of location, but it was just a better swing. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Here comes Mike Gstreky to the plate. That one misses. One and0. Oh, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Falter a 6-4 lefty. He features a fourseam fast ball, a slider, a curve, a two seamer, and occasionally works in a splitter. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. Bottom half of inning number two. swings through that one out in front that time. Next pitch is outside. Two balls, two strikes and a foul ball. He stays alive. popped up to the left into foul ground. Hayes on his way over and there’s one away. Bill, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. And I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrated with himself until his next at bat. Casey Schmidt now at the plate. Chopped to the right side, but a kicks foul. One down. Base is empty. That’s through there for a strike. tied up here in the early going on the ground and it goes just foul in the air right side. Reynolds gets under it, pulls it down and he makes the catch. Two down. Batty seven first base. Now it’s Dominic Smith. And that’s downstairs and outside. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Two out. Space is empty. All sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. Center field Cruz moving under it and puts the squeeze on that one and the inning is over. The Giants are able to tie things up thanks to the solo home run. All even now at 1-1. It’s Major League Baseball on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. This is Joey Bart. Joey Bart, Burlander back to work. Fast ball in the inside corner for a strike. He starts him with a fast ball and that’s a pitch that’s right in his wheelhouse. You need to be careful against him with that one. That misses one and one. just off the outside part of the plate. Really good take especially with two strikes. Struck him out looking. Isaiah Connor Falefa up to the plate. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. And that is downstairs. And that’s ball one. One out. Base is empty. Just missed. Get out of here. And a foul ball. Makes the count two and one. Slides, but he can’t come up with it. Now batting the first baseman, Spencer. So the Pirates batting order turns over. Up next for the Pirates, Spencer Horowitz flyed to right his first time. Close but called a ball. Ball one. Just missed man at first. One away. Ripped to right, stretches out and holds it in. Now batting hitter, Andrew McCutchen. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit. He popped out his first time. Come on, Giants. Let’s go Giants. And there’s the strike. Next one misses. And the count even one and one. One strike. Two gone. But the go ahead run is at first. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. outside low and it’s two and two. Two two squirts away a little bit. Brian Reynolds in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Connor Falefa leads off first with two down to the inning. So now two on and two outs. Now batting right fielder Ryan Reynolds. First and second, two outs. So next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Brian Reynolds 0 for one with a fly out to center. Strike on the inside corner. And that is out of play. Two in the dirt. Blocked. No advance. Good job behind the dish. Two on, two outs. Swings and misses. Struck him out. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out inside of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. back here at Oracle Park. Set for the bottom of the third. Now it’s the Giants catcher Patrick Bailey. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. And now one right through there for a strike. That’s inside and the count is one and two to third. Pays. Slings it across. leadoff man retired here in the third. Batting ninth, center fielder, Luis M. Here’s the center fielder, Luis Mtos. Come on, Luis. Misses off the plate and that is ball one. There’s the strike. Next pitch misses. Now two balls in a strike. One strike. fouls it back with two strikes. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Two two now on the ground to the left and that’s just foul. That’s inside. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Do next. Gets under and pops it up. Connor Falefa in position. You’re kidding me. Carous it. And there’s two away. Up next for the Giants, left fielder Elliot. Back to the leadoff spot in the Giants lineup. Elliot Ramos, the next Giant to hit. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. Ball one, no strikes. inside. Just missed this to third. Gaze to first out. Giants go in order. Giants go down quietly. Score remains deadlocked at one. Back here in San Francisco, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Nick Gonzalez. Giants upstairs. He’s been pitching well, but we’ll see what kind of adjustment the hitters make this second time through the order. We’ll know if he’s got really good stuff in this one or not. Next offering upstairs. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. That one misses and now three and0. You know, these Pirates showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense. Blind into right tracks it down for the out. Wow, he looked like he was running before the ball was hit. didn’t have much time as that was a hard hit liner, but a nice job of covering a lot of ground in a short amount of time. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage and that might be the case today. Cruz in now takes ball one off the plate. Two And a swing and a miss. Two-1. That one at 95. Missed up top. And that’s ball three. And that one fouled off. One down. Base is empty. Fouled off again. And it remains three and two. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Matoss sizes this one up. makes the grab. Two down. Now batting left fielder Tommy Fam. So up next, Tommy Fam drove in a run with a sack fly his first time up. San Francisco and a pop off right side. Foul territory has room and he makes the catch. Nothing doing for the offense that time. We’re midway in the fourth. All tied 1-1. Bottom of the inning. And digging in for San Francisco. Raphael Devers. Raphael Devers. Yeah. And here’s a fun stat on Dvers. He’s at his best when he’s hitting homers and doubles. And by the time he was 26 years old, Dever’s already had over 150 home runs and more than 200 doubles. He’s just the 15th player in baseball history with those kinds of numbers at that age. Ground ball right side. Gonzalez whips it to first. Leadoff hitter retired in the fourth. Now batting shortstop Willie Adam. So digging in Willie Adamus. He’s 0 for one. first pitch and he just misses. And that’s in there at the knees. Not sure if he could be in more of a groove. Looks really relaxed. He’s retired seven straight. This guy’s feeling it right now. And that’s off the inside edge. Two and one. All tied up. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Yeah, the 2-1 hammered but foul and that’s in the dirt. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. Very close off the outside corner. Could have easily been called a strike in that location. And here is Matt Chapman. He’s already homerred in this game. Now snap throw to first and he’s back safely. Grounded to third. Could be two. There’s one. And their second double play of the day will end the fourth. No runs, no hits, no errors. We’re headed to the fifth. All tied 1-1. And we’re back. Ready now for the fifth inning at the plate for Pittsburgh. Keep Ryan Hayes. Hayes measures 6 feet even, 215 lbs, a former first round pick back in 2015. You know, these Pirates just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. Just one extra base hit for them, so they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. He swings and drives one out to deep left field. Back there and it’s off the wall around first heading for two. The relay to second. Not in time. That’s a leadoff double. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. Here’s Joey Bart now. Struck out looking his first time. Hot shot to third. Over to Smith. One away here in the fifth. Now batting shorts stop Isaiah Ker Falefa. Here is Isaiah Ker Falefa. One for one with a single so far. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. Makes the grab and there’s two out. Now batting first baseman Spencer Horitz. So the go-ahead run in scoring position and now the Pirates leadoff man Spencer Horowitz for two in this one. That one’s in there. 0 and one. That one way inside. 2-1. Flying drive, base head. Here comes Hayes around third. Throw is offline and he scores. And a 2-1 ball game now. Oh, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. Here’s McCutchen. looked like it was a little bit up. Two outs. And that’s way high. And that’s ball two. just off the inside edge. And that’s a strike. Back-to-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. Right through there for a strike. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Horowitz. The runner at first with two gone. And a swing and a miss. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Mikey up here. That is upstairs for ball one. That one missed. Fought off foul swing and a popup. Hayes and there’s one down. Now batting third baseman Casey. So up next Casey Schmidt. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. The Pirates up by a run. Last half of inning number five. That one backed up the middle and it gets through. just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there was just no one there to knock it down. Man at first with one gone. Dom Smith stands in. Runner on the go. Swing and a miss. Throw to second. Tag out at second. Not a fast runner on the base pass. So, this kind of looks like it was a hit and run call from the dugout. Got to make contact some way or somehow because that guy’s not going to be able to steal second base and be safe. Oh, one down. And that one fouled off. got him looking and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Nothing doing there for San Francisco. And our score remains 2-1. Top six at the plate. Brian Reynolds. Burlander back to work. Pitch misses there and it’s one and0. Action in the pen down there. Tyler Rogers getting ready to come in for Bob Melvin. Rodriguez warming up as well. Next offering is in for a strike off the plate. Breaking ball misses down and away. Last couple of pitches. Breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Fouls one away and now three and two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Schmidt pulls it in and there’s one away. Now batting second base Nick. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Verlander done in this one. And he was a tough nut to crack. pretty stingy from start to finish. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching Landon Roof into the game coming on to face a righty here and he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Nick Gonzalez, the next pirate to hit. One for two. Swing and a miss. And he got him to chase. No ball. One strike. That’s a strike. 0 and two now. And that skips in the dirt. Base is empty. One away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Pitch misses. Two and two. Swing and a ground ball. And that one gets through into center field. So, a man aboard now with one away. O’Neal Cruz, the next Pirate to hit now. A screamer into the outfield. That’s a fair ball. And it’s getting into the corner now. He launches a throw over his head. doesn’t get too far away, so no one moves up. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Next to hit, Tommy Fan swings through that one. 01 Gonzalez on third. Cruz over at second with one down. Just missed. On the ground right side. Come on. Devils throws on to first now. Two away as they get a run across. Now batting third baseman Kean Hayes. And here is K Brian Hayes. Drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. There’s the strike. on the ground to Jeffs over to Smith that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. One run, a pair of hits, no errors, and one left off. 891 scheduled in the bottom of the six. It’s the Pirates three and the Giants one. Back here at Oracle Park. Bottom of the six. And now the switch in catcher Patrick Bailey. Bailey. Swings through that one for strike one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. And that one misses up and in. And now it’s even one and one. And that’s downed away. And now it’s filled up. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Just missed his spot on the inside right there. Now batting. And up next for San Francisco, Luis Mtos 0 for one with a fly out. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important getting back into this ball game. And now two and nothing with the tying run at the plate here in the bottom of the six. Check swing went around. Two and one now. One strike. And that’s in for a strike. Next pitch is outside. Oh, this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here, boo. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Well, big strike out right there. And maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the play today. Here’s Elliot Ramos. He’s grounded out a couple of times. Late swing fouled off. That misses and it’s one and one tap foul at the plate. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Not close with that one and the count’s even at two. That misses off the outside edge. That’s a really good take. and ball four to a board. He’s making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound, but you know, his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this, but he’s going to have to buckle down right here. Des in the box now. Takes strike one. Activity in Pittsburgh’s bullpen. Henness Cabrera loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. Machinski getting loose as well. Here’s the one and that’s outside. Two AS in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. And the count one and two, one out. Runners at first and second. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Misses three balls, two strikes. Well, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. And Rafy falls victim to the K. That’s tough. you see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. And when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. And the batter will be the shorts stop, Willie Adams. The shorts stop takes a ball. One ball, no strike. two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. That misses the zone and it’s two and one. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Fly ball down the line. Reynolds snags it on the run. Giants leave a couple and it remains a 3-1 ball game. We go to the top of the seventh. Here’s the Pirates catcher now, Joey Bart. Swinging a foul straight back. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit. Just not able to square it up. Just missed. Slice to right. Yensky makes the catch and there’s one gone. Now batting short Isaiah. Next to hit Isaiah Conor Falefa. And that’s in there at the knees. No ball, one strike. Right side. Des plenty of time to first and two away to start the seven. Now batting the first baseman, Spencer. Two out, space is empty. Up next for the Pirates, Spencer Horowitz. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. 01. Swanging a ground ball. Over to Smith and the Pirates go one, two, three. Bucks go down quietly as the lead remains 3-1. Now pitching for pitching change here. He’s averaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season and that’s not where you want to be at all. So we’ll see how he does here. Giants designated hitter Matt Chapman. Giants breaking ball through there for a strike. Pitching has been pretty dominant in this one, but you got to be careful not working with too big a lead. They could get right back in this ball game if you’re not careful. Sharp grounder. That’s for a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Now, it’s the right fielder Mike Ystreky. First pitch misses 10 with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom of the seventh. Next offering is in for a strike. Machinski picks over. Chapman dives back in safely. The tying run at the plate and a count one and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Good job to fight that one off. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. I really think the outer half is open. Tying run at the plate. Got him. And one away. And up next for the Giants, Casey Schmidt. Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. And the first offering is not close. Rudder takes off. pitch misses. See man at second down the line and it’s foul. way outside and now it’s three and two. Dominic Smith in the OD circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here right side. Reynolds gets under it, brings it in. Runner tags and goes to third. Now batting first baseman Thomas and the Pirates manager making his way to the mound now as he will make the move. Carmen Majinski won’t go any further. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now pitching for Henis Cabrera takes over on the mound. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. And digging in for San Francisco, Dominic Smith. edge of the zone for a strike 0 and one. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. Gets the call and it’s nothing and two. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s run up on strikes. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eight. Tyler Rogers just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. And now it’s Andrew McCutenber, the designated hitter. Andrew McCutchen just missed. Rogers goes 6′ 3 in. He features a sinker, a slider, and he works in a four seamer. Foul ball there. Come on. That one fouled off. The pitch to McCutchen. Ball two. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. And that one is lifted in the air. Yustki pulls it down. One up, one down. Now batting right fielder Brian Reynolds. B-ray coming to the plate now. 0 for three in this one. That one close rule to ball and that’s ball one. Rogers a very difficult guy to get hits off of. It’s really rare for teams to string stuff together against him. He wins every pitch. And for a hitter, sometimes a victory is just fouling off one of his pitches. Action in the San Francisco bullpen. Matt Gage getting ready to come in for Bob Melvin. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Unless he beats himself somehow. Can’t find it. doesn’t have the control command that day, he could pretty much forget about it. One down, base is empty. There’s a swing and a drive. Matoss on the move. He dives, but he can’t make the catch into second and he’s got a double. As a hitter, there’s even more pressure to take advantage of any mistake. Right. Yeah. And you’re hoping that, you know, somehow someway, whether it’s a hit by pitch, a walk, something bad happens because outside of that, stuff is just too good to fail. One out, runner at second. Gonzalez the next to hit. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And he’s got deception in his delivery. And it’s not that he’s trying to deceive the hitters. He just has this natural flow that makes it hard for hitters to pick the ball up. It gets on him a little bit quicker than they anticipate, even though they know what the velocity numbers are. Next pitch is outside. Reynolds over at second. One down. Next offering is down low. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. And ball four to a board. Now betting center fielder O’Neal Cruz. First and second, one out. Cruz getting ready to hit. One for three. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. That clips a corner. This guy’s definitely a plus runner. But what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base pads. A swing and a soft liner and it stays fair. Coming around third is Reynolds. He’ll score. Ramos hurries it back in. Runner holds it third. So just one across on the play. Picks himself up an RBI. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there. And you know on the mound it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. So next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Tommy Fan. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. Yeah, a slider misses down and away. Oh, he’s so good about trying to drive the ball to the opposite field gap in these situations. If he takes that approach, he could bust this game wide open. He had a foul ball and there’s a foul ball. Struck him out without a swing. Not sure about that call. pitcher might have gotten a friendly strike three. Big strike out right there. And that kind of takes the pressure off the defense a bit. Infield was in. So now they can move back, give themselves more time on a grounder to make a play. A lot more ways to work out of this and strand that runner at third now. And now Kee Ryan Hayes up the middle and that one handled onto first. They limit the damage here, but the Pirates strike on this runscoring double. It’s now 4-1. Bottom of the eighth and here’s the catcher, Patrick Bailey. The Giants in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boog, it starts with the laid off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Check swing called strike. And he grounds one to the right side. The flip to the pitcher covering and a quick out number one. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. And up next for San Francisco, Luis Mtos. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats, try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer is coming in. And first offering is fouled off. late that time and it’s strike two. Man, he was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up outside with a breaking ball. Got him swinging. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strike out. Two down, base is empty. Now it’s the Giants leadoff hitter Elliot Ramos. Giants. just missed. 10. Hit in the air. Right field. Reynolds gets under it, makes the grab, and that’ll end the inning. Now pitching. So, the Giants with a new pitcher on the hill, Randy Rodriguez. Well, he’s got electric stuff coming out of the pin. His strikeout rate though is through the roof so far this season. At the plate for Pittsburgh, Joey Barter, Joey Bart. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Fast ball is outside. Two ball. No strike. Just missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished. Little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, hit a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Slice down the right side. Goes down looking. I’m not saying it it wasn’t a strike or, you know, it was a ball, whatever, but just the location with that velocity. It’s hard enough even if the velocity is not great, but that velocity, that location, tip your cap. Yeah. The batter now, Isaiah Ker Falefa, a swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. No ball, one strike. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Matoss pulls it down and there’s two gone. Now batting. First baseman Spencer Horwit. Two out. Space is empty. And now the Pirates leadoff man Spencer Horowitz. Come on, Giant. And it’s fouled away. And that one lifted in the air. Center field. Makes the catch in Goldber. Three up, three down for him there. 234 set to hit in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Pirates four and the Giants one. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Dennis Santana. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure, this one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save. Here’s Raphael Des the babyfaced assassin. And a big swing and a miss. He got away with one there, but he knows he can’t go into that spot very often against a guy like this. And that one fouled off. Next pitch is downstairs. One ball, two strikes. Line drive rip down the left side towards the left field corner. Now he’ll turn for second and he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Back against the wall with two strikes but found a way. showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy, didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep, took the barrel right to it, and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Really important at bat coming up now. Adamus stands in now and watches strike one. Got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. That one missing inside. No outs. Runner on second. Lifted in the air down the left side and that’s a fair ball. Devils crosses the play and it’s an RBI single. It’s 42. Well, that gets him a little closer in this one. You’ll take those bloop hits off the end of the bat all day long. It doesn’t mean you put a great swing on it, but hitters deserve to get a lucky hit every now and then. Matt Chapman up to the plate now. He’s already homerred here in this one. Pitch misses. One and0. tying run at the plate. And that’s fouled off. Chapman gets a piece there. This one in the dirt and the runner stays where he is with the tying run at the plate. And the home team trying to pull it out. Got him. Outside pitch got the better of him that time. Well, one of the things that hitters will do is they’ll look for that red dot on the baseball as is coming in to let them know what the pitch is. And if they see the red dot, it’s typically a slider. But when a guy’s got a really tight one with high spin rates, very difficult to determine. And that’s probably why we saw a swing and miss right there. Just a nasty pitch. Now here is Mike Estreky and fouled off. Swinging a foul out of play. Adamus stands at first with one out. And that one popped in the air left field. Coming on is Fam to make the play. And there’s two away. Now batting third baseman Casey Schmid. One out left for the Giants. Now the third baseman Casey Schmidt. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth. Fouled off. He was late. Santana is just one strike away. That one outside at the count. One and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And that’s outside. That turns out to be a really good take right there. But you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. Two outs. sends it to center and that’s going to do it. Ball game. After four wins in a row, you start to think a little bit that you’re on a roll and that’s the momentum that just takes on a life of its own. Players start hitting up and down the lineup. Never know who’s going to come up with the big hit, who’s going to come out of the bullpen and get the big outs, but it’s a good feeling and you want to extend it. And your final 42 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long. What the heat?
