After more than three years of anticipation, Tony Cucch finally made his NBA debut in the Chicago Bulls 124 to 123 overtime win against the Charlotte Hornets to open the 1993-94 season. Drafted 29th overall back in 1990, the talented Croatian forward arrived in Chicago just as Michael Jordan exited, stepping into the NBA spotlight at a time of transition for the Bulls. Coming off the bench, Cuc played 21 minutes and contributed 10 points, five rebounds, and one assist on five of 10 shooting. While he missed both of his three-point attempts, he played with composure and showed flashes of the court vision and offensive versatility that had made him one of Europe’s most accomplished players before arriving in the NBA. Without Jordan, the Bulls needed new sources of offense and creativity, and Cuc gave an early glimpse that he could be one of them. Though his role was still growing, he looked comfortable in the flow of the game, made smart decisions with the ball, and held his own in a physical matchup. Cucatcha’s debut performance set the tone for a solid rookie season. He averaged 10.9 points for rebounds and 3.4 assists while adjusting to the NBA’s pace and physicality. Though his shooting percentages, 43% from the field and 27% from three, showed room for improvement, he quickly became one of the league’s most promising international players. Cucotch would go on to have standout moments throughout his rookie campaign, most memorably in the 1994 playoffs, where he hit a dramatic buzzer beater to defeat the Knicks in game three. But on opening night, he quietly but confidently introduced himself to the league and helped Chicago start its post Jordan journey with a win. [Music]
