Steelers GM Omar Khan Talks Trading Pickens, Adding Ramsey & Paying TJ Watt | The Rich Eisen Show

in terms of putting things together for this team. Uh you bring in DK Metaf, you pay him a significant amount of money. U the thing that I’m I’m wondering and I hear from a lot of Steeler fans is why did George Pickins have to go? Like why would you trade him away after bringing him in, developing him, and obviously seeing a certain talent level? What would you what you’re willing to share on that front? Yeah, Rich, you know, I’ll just say, you know, as we went through the uh you know, the the off season and and and the process, um it just became evident that for both sides, a fresh start was uh was probably the best thing. Uh you know, it it just it just made sense uh for both of us. And in a massive trade like the one you pulled off with Miami involving so many talented players doesn’t just happen overnight. Uh how how how long were you cultivating that caper? Uh it’s it was uh it it was weeks, you know, there were several moving parts. Um uh but with Miami, we have a great relationship with those guys and uh um you know, it was weeks. Okay. And the TJ Watt signing Omar getting it done um no doubt a relief for everybody involved. What would you say about the contract you gave TJ Watt and what it it means Omar? Yeah, without going into specifics of the numbers, I think it it just reflects how we feel about him. And it was important and I talked about this at the combine. It was important um for me and for the organization uh to have TJ be a one helmet hall of famer. You know, uh it’s it’s it would be a great thing and you know, hopefully there’s many many more years uh to go with TJ, but uh it was just important. I mean, he I mean, his numbers speak for themselves. And, you know, I don’t know how many of you guys have gotten to know him, but he’s he’s an even as great of a player as he is, he’s an even better person. Well, I I love him. I mean, there’s nothing there’s nothing to dislike about TJ Watt, right? And in so many different ways. Plus, he seems to be the perfect uh avatar for a Steeler, you know what I mean? and and also for somebody who can I don’t think Tomlin needs help selling, but you know, you obviously you need uh big-time players who have already bought in that locker room selling and he seems to be that guy as well along with Cam Hayward if you just want to mention a couple of players on defense. Omar. Yeah, right. We we have um we we feel really good about our locker room, but obviously those guys that are been here for a few years, you know, they uh they have a the biggest impact and um you know, TJ’s one of them and obviously Cam too. And uh Jaylen Ramsey now coming to this team and John Smith on top of it. Um we saw what you did in the draft as well. You hit that defensive line uh for sure. Um, and starting off with Derek Harmon, uh, you got Yaya Black of Iowa. Um, you you hit the defensive line again with Jack Sawyer on top of it. The the guy that jumps out at me is is Caleb Johnson. How much of a role do you envision him having with Jaylen Warren? Obviously, Naji Harris now is down the street from this studio in Southern California. How much of a role do you see the Iowa rookie running back having for this team? Yeah, I I think the next couple weeks here in LRO will will dictate that, but um there’s definitely an opportunity and um he’s he’s been great. He’s been great since we got him here. He’s learning. He’s working hard. Uh he’s in great shape. Um so, you know, the opportunity is there and that that that’s what training camp’s for. We got a I think we have three more weeks here in Latroe, maybe three and a half. And um you know, we’ll see how it how it all shakes out. And your plan for for Will Howard, the quarterback that you did take in this draft, Omar Khan, is what what’s your vision here for him? Well, we were excited. We were obviously excited uh to get Will. We I mean, he’ll tell you, we spent uh every opportunity we had uh to to to talk to him and get to know him. Um you know, we did, you know, in Indianapolis uh the proday. Um and you know, we just we just like what we see and think there’s a a bright future there. And you know, he has a great opportunity to learn from uh uh one of the best quarterbacks ever uh while he’s here. And I know he’s doing that. He’s asking a lot of questions and he’s observing. Um you know, he has opportunity to learn from Mason Rudolph who’s been great. You know, he’s spent several years uh here with us and he’s back. Um so he has an opportunity to learn and grow and um obviously some some things have to come together, but I I think the future’s bright for him.
