time that could have. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. So, just about set and on the hill today, number 31, Chris. It’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. A lot more guys striking out today. But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. Number 14 leading things off and takes the strike. Next offering is in for a strike. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. Ground ball right side and foul ball and that skips in the dirt. Struck him out looking. Yandi Diaz now just missed. One ball, no strike. One out. Base is empty. The other way. Fair ball. That play looks routine defensively, but with all of the little nooks, it can get real tricky down in the corner. Kept it to a long single. Nice defensive play. Now up for Tampa Bay. Jonathan Aranda and that misses. That’s ball one. swing and a foul out of play. Diaz leads off first with one away. Here we go. Yanks runner on the go. That one ripped right center field and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. Run scores easily and the Rays strike first. It’s one- nothing. Well done. Drives in the run. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. One out, runner at second. Camo now at the plate. Up the middle. The throw to first. Now two out. Now a look at Kevin Cash’s lineup for the Tampa Bay Rays. This is an offense, Chris, that’s having a hard time scoring runs right now. Yeah, sometimes things just aren’t going to click. And unfortunately, what happens is players press, they try to do a little bit more, and they get out of their game. You got to let the game come to you. If you chase it, it’s going to run from you. So, this is a team that just needs to calm down, relax, and understand that they’re going to come out of this. Josh Low at the plate now. That’s ball one. No strike. Two outs with a runner at third. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. It’s strike two. Strike him out. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Two outs. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. down and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Oh, he hit him and that got him pretty flush. He had him one, two, and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. Jake Mangum next to hit for the Rays. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. And that’s in the dirt. At this point, the clean inning is over. Got to settle in, focus on the hitter, and get out of it with minimal damage. It’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game. But here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on. Let’s see if they can cash in. Two on, two outs. That one ripped. And this one looks like trouble. One run is in. Low around third. He’ll score. Two runs are in. Picks himself up a couple of ribbies. Nice line drive to Pullside. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. And stepping in for the Rays, Tristan Gray. Ball one, no strikes. Man at second. clips the corner and the count one and one. The one-1 is fouled off. Two outs and one in scoring position. Fouls it off. Still one and two. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Cut on and missed and it’s a strikeout. And that is the inning. But three score in the inning. Two of them on this two-run double. It’s now 3 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here in New York and towing the slab, Drew Rasmusen. Tell us about him in that sub3 RA. Sigy. Well, anytime you can keep your ERA under three, you’re doing a lot of things right and you’re putting your team in a position to win a lot of ball games as well. and he’s doing tremendous out there on the mound. Every time he gets the ball, you expect him to go out there and dominate. And that’s what he’s been to this point. We’ll see how he is today. And a pitch. And now the count is even. That one is upstairs. Way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high. Over to first. That takes care of Gisham. And time now to check out the New York Yankees lineup. A really frustrating showing for them in their last game. Lots of traffic on the bases, but they left a ton of runners on base. Couldn’t cash in their chances, Chris. They had plenty of chances. There’s nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively. They just did a poor job converting in those situations. You have to figure out what’s your plan going to be. Maybe watch some tape from the last game. Make the adjustments. So, if you get those opportunities in this one, you’ve got a much better chance of scoring some runs. edge of the zone called a strike and it’s nothing and two. I understand you want to try to gauge that guy’s fast ball, but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone. Now you’re in a tough spot. Fights it off. You’ll see another one down. Base is empty. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. That’s inside. Swing and a miss. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide and what happens is because of the pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that’s what leads to the strikeout. Two out space is empty. That one pushed to the left and fouled. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Got him looking. And the Yanks go quietly. One, two, three go the Yankees. They trail it here. 3 nothing. Top of the second now up for Tampa Bay. Taylor Walls. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris Walls playing up the middle at short. 28 years old and he was a third round pick back in 2017. Swinging a ground ball. One up, one down. Batting night catcher Matt. Matt Feice comes up to hit here on the mound. He’s got to remember his offense can score a lot. So if he can hit the reset button from here going forward, there’s still a chance that his club can win this ball game. Close one. Doesn’t get the call and it’s two and 0. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. That one fouled off and a foul ball. He stays alive. One down. Base is empty. Out of the ground to third. Sends it across to first. Two up, two down in the top of the second. Now batting the center fielder Chandler Simpson. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. Struck out looking at his first at bat. And a bunt towards third and it goes just foul. Bunt attempt but that goes foul. on the ground to the left and save. He busted it down the line for that infield single. Boo. He doesn’t care how he does it. He just wants to get on base and when he does that puts him in a position to do some damage, put some pressure on the defense as well. His wheels are truly a weapon out there. So, a man aboard, Yandi Diaz digs in now. One for one with a single so far. Check swing and he went. That’s strike one. No ball, one strike, two outs. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Come on, New York. Squirts away a little bit to second, but way too late. Safe there. So, a wild pitch allows the runner to advance. Nobody on defense feels great right now. The pitcher feels responsible for missing so far outside. And the catcher wishes he could have done more to try to stop it. And the slider just misses. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. It’s so hard to slow yourself down when you see that juicy breaking ball, but the most success happens when you try to take that right back up the middle approach. Cut on and lifted in the air. Dominguez and that is that one left for Tampa, but they lead it three nothing. Back in New York, we head to the bottom of the second and stepping in for the Yankees, John Carlos Stanton. He is very much your typical power hitter. I’d say he falls into the three true outcomes category. Well, we’ve seen more and more of that lately. The ability to drive the ball to slug is getting heavily favored over any discipline or strikeout concerns. just missed. A three-0 lead is great, but you can’t get too comfortable. Got to stay aggressive, keep attacking hitters. Try to cruise through this ball game. And that’s in for a strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Misses the zone and he gets him to chase. Man, that was pretty gross right there. Gets a piece and stays alive. All right, Yankees. Next offering misses down and away. Let’s go Yankees. Next pitch is outside and that is ball four. And that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. You know, Boo, it’s been said these guys are savages in the box. You can see it right there with such tight plate discipline. Jazz Chisum Jr. now. And he swings and misses at the initial offering. Let’s go. Base hit. Tap foul at the plate. swing and a miss. Struck him out. Typically that high fast ball if it’s close to the top of the strike zone, a hitter, if he’s prepared for it, can get to it. But that one just had that little jump at the end, which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it and it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s internal clock would expect it to. And that’s why you see the swing and miss. And here’s Paul Goldmid outside low one and0 Rasmusen. He has a reputation, I don’t know, maybe a knack for working himself out of tough situations that he finds himself in. You know, you like that in a relief pitcher, but when you have it for a starting pitcher, a guy that can get out of a tight spot, that is pretty valuable. Next offering is fouled back. And you won’t see the skipper rush to get somebody up in the bullpen as soon as he starts to see some signs of trouble. This guy’s earned a longer leash. And because of that, confidence grows with the players and teammates playing behind him that when things get a little rough out there, they know he’ll find his way through it. On the ground right side, and that’s just foul. How much of the ability to do that in a tight spot is the mental approach? I think it’s very much being able to have a laser-like focus, slow everything down, stay right in that moment, pitch to pitch execution, and focusing on that catcher’s mission McMahon. Ryan McMahon steps to the plate. All right, Brian. Swing and a miss. It’s 0 and one now. This guy is just filling up the strike zone right now. Don’t want to get yourself in an 02 hole. You better be ready to pull the trigger on the first pitch. Inside corner and that’s called a strike. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. and he hits a ground ball right side. Gray whips it to first and that is the inning. The Yanks leave one. They trail in this one three nothing. Back now in the Bronx. Top half of the third inning. And now the first baseman, Jonathan Aranda and first offering is fouled off. Well, these Rays doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. Swings and misses. One and two. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved. A dives, but it kicks off his glove. The throw is late and they catch a break as they get a base runner at first. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Now, here’s the Tampa Bay cleanup hitter, Junior Camero. Fouled off. He was late. Yankees. There’s the strike. Well, that’s textbook pitching right there. I mean, he executed those first two pitches perfectly. gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Aranda on at first, nobody out. And that skips in the dirt. Well, with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt, a good secondary lead. Doesn’t have to get away from the catcher, but if you’re anticipating based off the trajectory, get yourself into scoring position. Got him. That K is his third of the game. So digging in Josh Low rightielder Josh Low and first offering is fouled off York. Foul ball. This one in the dirt. Good miss with that change up away. He needs a ball on the ground for a double play. minimize the potential threat right here on the hitter side. Nice job of laying off that pitch in the dirt. Come on, York. And that one hammered. This one’s got a chance. See you later. He’ll touch them all. And they add to their lead. It’s five zip. Already playing with the lead. And now they’re celebrating a home run. They’re having a great time out there. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. was very patient and it paid off. So, one out, nobody on. So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Jake Mangum. That one catches the zone and that is strike one. Here’s a swing and a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. So, a man aboard now with one away. Now batting second base Tristan Gray and stepping in for the Rays Tristan Gray. He struck out swinging at his first at bat. Runner on the move. Now one out to right. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and there’s two away. Lefties can definitely be a little pole happy up there, especially with pitches that they see pretty well. That was a good example. He hooked an outside pitch, hit that ball in the air to right, just not with much authority. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Next offering is in for a strike. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Whips it to first on the run. Nicely done for the out, but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. And the lead is now 5 nothing. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show here at New Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. As we go to the last of the third, here’s the Yankees catcher now, Austin Wells. Rasmusa back to work. Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. Let’s go Austin. And that is out of play. That one missed. Yankees. Just off the inside edge. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. Oh, looking for a swing anding miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Cole’s pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. Anthony Vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees and first offering is fouled off. Welts gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Come on, let’s keep it going. Strike two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Oh, that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike. And that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can become when they’re up against an 02 count. You’re just hoping for a mistake somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to. But right there, he was clearly anxious. He was swinging when the ball left the hand. Now here’s Trent Gisham. He’s 0 for one. Inside ball one. man at first. One away. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Misses off the play and a count two and one. And that’s outside. Let’s go Yankees and he grounds one to the right side and foul ball and ball four two aboard. Well, he’s normally going to fill up the strike zone and really limit base runners, but his command in this one just seems off out there. A lot more walks than he’s used to giving up. First and second, one out. And next for New York, Jason Dominguez. And first off is fouled off. Here’s an opportunity. If you’re going to get back in this game, you have to take advantage of this situation. This feels like their chance. Swanging a ball driven out to center that’s back there and makes the grab. Grounder tags at second and he’s up to third safely with two gone. Now batting the designated hitter, Cody Bellinger. That was a great run to make the catch. Singi, we got to take another look at it with Stackcast. Yeah, he saw it perfectly off the bat. Reactions were excellent. Took a very direct route to the ball and more than a 100 feet later, he ran it down. I just love seeing that. Bellinger up to hit. Went down on strikes his first time through. That one misses. And that’s ball one. Ruers on first and third. Two away here in the last half of the third. That one off the mark. Two and0. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Let’s go Yankees. Two on, two outs. Tapped in front of the plate. In plenty of time to first. That’s the third out. So they strand a pair. Three innings complete. It’s the Rays five and the Yankees nothing. Welcome back. And now on the mound to start the fourth, Will Warren. And with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers in their numbers, but I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. At the plate, Matt Than late swing fouled to the left and there’s a foul ball. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Pitch is in the dirt and the count one and two. Good job to fight that one off. There’s a high chopper over to Goldie. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. Now batting center fielder Chandler Simpson. So the Rays batting order turns over. Here’s the center fielder one for two. That one missing inside. Ball base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Swang and a miss. And count one and two. That one back up the middle and it gets through. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Now batting designated hitter Yandi Yandi Diaz next to hit for the Rays. A bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. And takes low for ball one. Rudder takes off. Swing and a miss. Safe at second and he easily steals the bag. Clearly not content with the lead they’re working with right now and I like that. I don’t think you can get comfortable with a fiveun lead in today’s game and now they’ve got a good chance of adding on. That one hit to right. And there’s two away. Up next for Tampa Bay. And here’s the first baseman, Jonathan Aranda. Singy. He’s got a history of coming through in the big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers, and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. If you’re a guy that can only hit to one field, then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust. But because he’s able to use the entire field, that’s why he’s so successful in these situations. And that one moves his feet. No, that’s a ball. Full count. Drips one to right and it goes just foul. When you played, did you play with guys that you thought were clutch and sort of what were the attributes you said that’s what he possesses that allows him to come through? Well, we always used to joke, you know, guys want to eat steak. A swing and a miss that retires the side and that’ll do it. The Rays strand just the one, but they hold a five nothing lead. Bottom four now. Here’s John Carlos Stanton. Left fielder Jean Carlos Stanton. Remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Yeah. And I figured you would get Kate into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. and now one and two. Looking good, Yankees. Next offering is outside. Come on. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. It’s a good breaking ball there just off the corner where you can’t really do much damage, but it’s close enough to where you got to protect and he just couldn’t find a way to fight it off. Jazz Chisum Jr. getting ready to hit. Struck out swinging his first time. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. Wastes no time there. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. Right on time, good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. Here’s Paul Goldmid 0 for one so far. Fast ball in the inside corner for a strike. Here comes the one fought off foul. Chisum leads off first with one away. Now a fly ball to right center sizing this one up. Makes the catch for the out. Two away now. Up next for the Yankees. Third base Ryan. So a man aboard. There’s Ryan McMahon now. Rolled out to second in his first at bat. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Check on the runner. York. The one-1 just missed. One strike. And there’s the strike. The Rays leading by five. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That one just misses. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Left field way back there. That’s back. And that one is off the wall. The runner scores all the way from first as they cut into the lead. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. just missed out on a home run right there, but he certainly hit it hard enough. Just didn’t have the right launch angle to carry it over the wall, but still an excellent swing at the bat. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. So, runner at second, two down. And next for New York, Austin Wells delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Man on second, two down. Center field settles underneath it. He’s got it and the inning is over. Yankees strike for a run on the RBI double. It’s now 51. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. All set for the start of the inning. Now up for Tampa Bay, Junior Camero. Camero just 21 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic. Right through there for a strike. activity in the bullpen. Max Freed getting loose out there for Aaron Boon. Delos Santos also throwing Yankees Swang and a ball lifted in the air and there’s one down. Up next for Tampa Bay, right Josh Low. So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Josh Low. He’s already homerred in this game and a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter, not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an O2 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. Foul ball still 0 and two. Good eye right there. That missed by a lot. Two and two. stays alive. Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time a little anxious. Two down, base is empty. And stepping in for the Rays. Jake Mangum. And that drops in for a strike. And a foul ball. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two and downstairs. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Fights that one away. Still one and two. And a swing and a miss. And it’s a three up, three down inning. Rays go in order. 1, two, three. They’re up 5-1. Back for more from the Bronx. ready to go for the last half of the inning. And here is Anthony Vulpi. That clips the zone. Strike one. Tampa Bay’s bullpen with some action. Ryan Pepio warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Bole also getting ready. Here we go. And a big swing and a miss quickly in an 02 count. You’ve got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere. Then you got a chance. Swag and a miss. The velocity blasted it right past him. Just blown away in that at bat. Three fast balls, all strikes. He wasn’t even able to foul one off. There’s not much you can take away from an at bat like that as a hitter other than maybe there’s something wrong with your eyes. He’s got to have better timing on the fast ball next time. Gisham batting with one down. takes a strike. The Yankees down by four. Last half of inning number five. And there’s a ball. They’ve got a potent lineup. And when you think about teams capable of rallying from this kind of deficit, they’re right at the top of the list. There’s a strike. No way. Upstairs. And it’s two and two. Well, he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not. Come on, Yankees. Swung on. Belted and a foul ball. fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Ninth pitch of the atbat do next and he grounds one back up the middle. It’s in and out of his glove. throw to first, gets him. Good job to stay with it there for the second out. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Two out, space is empty. And stepping in for the Yankees, Jason Dominguez in there for strike one. Come on, New York. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. And that keeps the inning alive. There you go. Here comes Belly to take his cuts. B for two in this one. Yanks. Hit hard but foul off to the left. two outs. There goes the runner. Pitch is low. Throw to second. Out at second. That ends the inning. Well, trying to get into scoring position, but a great catch and throw to end the inning. That’s the way to pick up the pitcher. Back at Yankee Stadium, start of the six, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And leading off, Tristan Gray, Warren back to work. drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. Dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases. And that’s a leadoff double. Oh, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. Challenged him with the fast ball right in the heart of the zone and he was clearly ready to jump all over it. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Taylor Walls. He’s grounded out a couple of times. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Gray around third. The throws offline. He’s safe. It’s 6-1. Catcher Matt Th. So, a man at first. Matt th next to hit for the Rays. There’s the strike. Gets the outside corner with that one. One on, nobody out. A run in. And we’re the top half of the sixth. swang and a miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Dominating strike out there on just three pitches. And that’s what a good power pitcher can do to you if he’s hitting his spots, filling up the strike zone. Sometimes he bats over before it really begins. Move to first. Walls back on a dive. Number 14 in the box now. No balls in a strike. Always tough to turn two on a speedster like this. It’s even harder with him coming out of the left-handed batters box. You really need something to hit hard on the ground that they can handle. Runner on the go. Rocketed out towards right center. He dives, but he can’t make the catch. Lead runner around second. Lead runner holds to third. So, two runners in scoring position and just one out. clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. Pretty much just a textbook double into the gap. And when you can drop one in there between the outfielders, you know you’re making the turn at first. Just an excellent swing. At the plate now for the Rays is the DH. Yandi Diaz one for three and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. York. Highf fly ball right field. Dominguez pulls it down and he makes the catch. And there’s two down. Jonathan Aranda will hit next. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots in the air left field. He makes the grab and that is that. So one run in the inning on this base hit and this is now a 61 ball game. Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Kevin Kelly. And you know, bullpen guys can struggle sometimes when they’re called upon with big leads because it just doesn’t have the same intensity as a tight game. So, we’ll see how sharp he is. Your mental toughness matters in situations like this as well. 345 do up for the home team. In now is the Yankees DH Cody Bellinger and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Bullpen movement for the Rays. Ryan Pepio up and throwing. New York. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. Ah, that hit him. And the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. And now it’s John Carlos Stanton. He is struck out and he is walked. Stanton. That one’s in there. And that’s strike one. Bellinger gets his lead at first with nobody out. Stanton tries to hold up. Appeal to first. Did not go. Next one misses and it’s two and one. And the sweeper is off the plate. 3-1 now. And that one fouled off. Nobody out. Runner at first. Yankees. swing and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s gone. John Carlos Stanton blasts one out to the opposite way. It’s 63. Those are the at bats that leave pitchers exhausted. He had to throw a lot of pitches and still gave up the long ball. That’s a bad combo. Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage, even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. And up next for New York, Jazz Chisum Jr. And a strike on the outside edge. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. Swinging a foul out of play. Nobody on, nobody out. A pair of runs across in the inning here in the bottom of the six. And down on strikes he goes. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Paul Goldmid now Goldmith on the ground and that’s just foul. Still only one out here in the inning and that’s outside. Off the mark there. Two and one. That’s to third. Camo slings it across and they get Gold Schmidt for the out. Now batting third base, Ryan. Two down, base is empty. Here’s the third baseman, Ryan McMahon. Drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. And first off is fouled off. Ball one there. One ball, one strike. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. That’s back there. Out of here. So he blasts one out the other way. Second home run of the inning for him. And they cut into the lead. It’s 6-4. This crowd is on fire right now. They’re going nuts thanks to that home run. opposite field home run and it’s a warm night for sure. Ball’s not being slowed as it gets up in the air to the outfield. So that had no problem getting out of here. Really nice show of power going the other way. And now Austin Wells first offering and it just misses. Well, it might be a night game, but it’s pretty hot out there and I don’t have to tell you partner, you’re sweating pretty good over there. Makes this long inning that he’s grinding through out there a little extra taxing. Next offering is in for a strike. And that’s outside. This has been a rough inning, but sometimes you just got to work through it. Save the rest of that bullpen. Somehow stop the bleeding. That misses and the count is three and one. Anthony Vulpi in the on deck circle. draws the walk there. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. And the Rays manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Kevin Kelly won’t go any further. two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Ryan Pepio gets the ball now. He last pitched two days ago. Walks out of the bullpin. Can absolutely kill your momentum very quickly. They’re in some hot water trying to protect this lead. Runner at first with two away. Next to hit, Anthony Vulpi, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. Drops into the glove and the inning is over. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now a 64 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Max Freed. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Down the third base, Junior Camro for three in this one. Yankees. Fouled off down the right side. Come on, let’s go. Strike ball. Swinging a foul straight back. That one missed. Comes a 2-2 and that one is inside. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. Now it’s the right fielder Josh Low. He’s already homerred here in this one. Yankees. That’s through there for a strike. Movement in the Yankees pen. Tim Hill getting ready to go. Camero on at first. Nobody out. Check swing called strike. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. Ripped to right. Dominguez snags it. And there’s one down. Now that left fielder Jake Mangum now up for Tampa Bay, Jake Mangum. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. This guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single runner on the go. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Now at 02 from free. Got him swinging. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Now it’s the second baseman. Tristan Gray swings through that one for strike one. Two outs. And that one fouled off. 0 and two now and ball one. Swung on. Popped up on the infield. McMahon makes the grab and that’ll do it. So, no runs in the inning despite the leadoff walk. And that does it. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Rays six and the Yankees four. Bottom of the seventh. So the batter now will be Trent Gisham. The Yankees looking to rally. And that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one. You see the velocity 97 with that fast ball. Hard ground ball base knock. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Jason Dominguez the next to hit and that one fouled off. Now, these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game and fouled off with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom of the seventh. Swing and a miss. struck him out. Chased the fast ball up the ladder for strike three. Well, pitchers have become so much better at commanding that high fast ball. It used to be that a lot of pitchers didn’t like to throw it because it throw off their release point and their mechanics and they’re aimed at keeping everything at the knees, get ground balls, but because hitters get a swing path that can lift balls at the knees up in the air and over the fence, this pitch has come back into play and they are doing some special things with it. in the air out towards right center. Pauls it in and there’s two away. Now batting left fielder John Carlos Stanton. John Carlos Stanton to the plate now. And things could change quickly here with one swing. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball one upstairs. Two count to a guy with this much pop at the dish. You better expect him to be turning on something. It’s going to either get hit hard to the pull side or the fans better look out in the stands. That one not close. Three and0. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. Tying run at the plate. A little out front there as he swings through it. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it. So now two on and two outs. Pretty much the last thing you want from your bullpin arms are free passes, especially in spots like this. Make the team earn their way on. Now Jazz Chisum Jr. steps up for a big at bat. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Fought off foul. got them back going too soon in strike two. Man, 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a low-end fast ball for some pitchers. That one almost got him. swing and a hard hit grounder to third. Fair ball runner around third on his way to the plate. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single. 65 back within a run. Love how he let that ball travel. Trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. First and second, two outs. Paul Goldmid will climb in a little bit low. Big spot. Two out. Both the tying and go-ahead runs are aboard. And another ball. Next offering in there for a strike and the cow. Two and one. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. That one ripped but foul. A healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98, but a really good pass at the ball. Swinging a drive. This one is crushed. No doubt about it. And here in the late stages, they have the lead. He’ll take a jog around the bases and they tack on three. It’s 86. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. So, Singi, this is a little bit of a surprise. A guy known for line drives, hits going over the fence. Well, if you’re a little too early, you’ll get some elevation in the ball to get out of the ballpark for him, it’s kind of a mistake, but you know what? When you have such a good approach, every now and then you’re going to run into one. And the Rays manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Ryan Pepio departs. And as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Brian Baker on the pitch out of the pen here. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year, and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. And next for New York, Ryan McMahon. And first offering is fouled off. Two down. Nobody on. Fast ball is outside. And a swing to miss. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Battling here as he fouls it away. hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A three-run homer. It’s now 86. back after this on the show. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Brent Hedrickk. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. And the batter will be the shortstop, Taylor Walls. Taylor Walls, we go. That one’s in there. Strike one. Hedrickk, 27 years old, and he was a ninthround draft pick back in 2019. A sliding stop throw to first. Got him. Nice play. Just so impressed with the movement on that play. Footwork was excellent. The arm strength was there. And of course, the most important part was getting the out. Matt th next to hit for the Rays. 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. Fast ball for a strike rolled slowly to first. Goldie, he steps on the bag. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Deceptive slider right there. stayed in the tunnel a long time. Got that hitter out front, rolled over it, put it on the ground, and now the center fielder. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. This guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. He swings and fouls one off. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the eighth that misses the zone and it’s a ball and a strike. Was a good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, get a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. That one misses now. Three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Check swing and he went three and two now. Lefty continues to work, but the closer getting loose in the bullpen up the middle. Vulpi on the run. Throw to first. They get the out and that’ll do it. Rays held in check here. Can’t cut into an 86 deficit. And we’re back ready for the bottom of the eighth. Here’s the Yankees catcher now, Austin Wells. And he deals. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Tampa Bay’s bullpen with some action. Garrick Clevenger, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Boille getting loose as well. Let’s go Yankees. And a foul ball. Go Yankees. Ball to strike the pitch and it’s fouled away. Come on, New York. Close but called a ball. Two balls, two strikes the count. That one called just inside, I think. And on the mound, he’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. Doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it, though. But he clearly thought it clipped the corner. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. That one missing inside. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Hey, you got this. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. Close pitch there. But you got to forget about that call if you’re out on the mound. You can’t let it affect you going forward. You’ve got to get out of the inning first. And then if you want to be frustrated, take it out in the dugout. Vulpi stands in here, takes ball one low. Welts gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Foul ball there. Yak. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. Runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. Oh, tough night at the dish. Punching out for the third time right there. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate. A little unsure of his timing right now. Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches. He’ll have some adjustments to make. Come on Yankees. Gisham the next to hit. Takes ball one. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. in the dirt but kept close and an excellent job keeping it right there. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Let’s go. New York. Fights it off. He’ll see another almost got him. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Oh, this is a good time to step out of the box, take a deep breath, reset. Couple of change ups. Probably won’t see another one here. This one in the air. Camo and he makes the catch. Two down. Up next for the Yankees, right fielder Jason. And stepping in for the Yankees, Jason Dominguez, check swing called strike. drilled in the air high and deep right field. That one carrying and it’s gone. Home run number 10 on the year. And they tack on to their lead. It’s 106. And that shot makes their grip on the lead even tighter. A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. Base is empty with two away. Now it’s the DH Cody Bellinger. Fast ball in the inside corner for a strike. Now one and one. Base is empty, two away, but two runs are in near the bottom half of the eighth inning. And a one, two. Gets a piece and stays alive. Foul ball still a one and two count. Good job to fight that one off. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Two outs and they’ll do it again. Eighth pitch of the at bat coming up. And that’s in the dirt. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. hit pretty well in the air out to center. Has this one sized up. Brings it in for the third out. Another look at the long ball for the Yankees. Last chance for the Rays coming up. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Yerry de los Santos. And he’s been hit pretty hard at times this year, so he’s looking for better right now. Giving up more than a hit per inning. To the plate now for the Rays is the DH Yandi Diaz. Diaz. And first offering is fouled off. That’s down and in. Activity in the bullpen for the Yankees. Tim Hill getting loose out there for Aaron Boone. out towards right center. That’s well struck and no one can get there and that’s going to roll to the wall into second easily with a leadoff double. He was all over that one. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay. runner in scoring position, no outs. And the batter now, Jonathan Aranda, hit in the air right field. And that one way back there. And that is way gone. He circles the bases. His 12th of the season. And they cut into the deficit. It’s 108. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat for a pitcher. The odds are in your favor if you keep that breaking ball down. That time he got punished for it. Hitter just did a really good job of staying within himself and getting the barrel to the baseball. Next to bat will be the Rays four hitter, Junior Camro. And that misses and it’s one and0. This one smoked on its way out of here. They do it again. Backto back homers. It’s 109. That one just sounded different. And might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I could feel that swing from the booth. Back-to-back homers. Always a special feeling at the ballpark, especially if it’s your team that does it and those guys get to slap hands at home plate. This is the kind of thing that can really fire up a ball club. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Gary de los Santos will depart and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching Deon Williams on to try and close it out. And he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. The batter now Josh Low swing and that ball smashed on a line and it’s off the wall around first. digging for two and he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Oh, that at bat had a lot riding on it. Certainly a pivotal swing of the bat in this ball game. A well-deserved double on a great swing. Got everything going on time. He stayed balanced and he squared it up about as well as you could possibly ask. Now that sets up a huge bat in this ball game. So the tying run in scoring position now. And here is Jake Mangum. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Well, they’re applying pressure, quality at bats, quality swings right now. And see this offense doing it one player to the next. Showing a lot of fight right now. And they’re making it difficult for the back end of this bullpen to close out this game. So, the tying run at second. Rarely will you see a pitcher just to waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out. Man at second. Swing and a miss. He struck him out. throws to first in time. Now one gone in the ninth and the runner stays where he is. Here’s the second base. Tristan Gray, one for four with a double. Ball one there. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. cut on and missed 96 with that fast ball. Just threw that fast ball by him. Elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Called out on strikes. Down to the last out for the Rays. Well, even if you don’t feel great about it, you got to swing the bat with two strikes in this situation. You’ve got the tying run out there in scoring position. Just put the ball in play. Maybe something good will happen. It just didn’t look like he understood the situation. So, they’re down to their final out. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Taylor Walls. And that is out of play. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. They’re down to their final strike. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never had a chance. One strike away. Swinging a miss. That one in the dirt. Welts down to first with it. In time ball game and the strike out ends it. Listen, when you’re down by five, you know you have an opportunity to get back in the ball game, but you’re also going to have to keep that other team from increasing that lead to perhaps 10. They did just that. Both sides of the ball. Excellent job to get the win in this one. In a one-run game as this one ends 109. They hang on to win it by a run for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shi saying so long.
