It has become “very clear over the last few months” that N.Y. Jets owner Woody Johnson has “consciously pulled back from the forefront of the organization’s idea-generating process” and has “become willing to cede that role to his newly hired top employees,” according to Tom Rock of NEWSDAY. The “often publicly embarrassing complaints and criticisms of Johnson by those inside the building — most of which boiled down to the idea that he was too meddlesome in the day-to-day operation of the organization – seem to have sparked a period of self-reflection, growth and change in him.” When the Jets earned poor grades for their locker room by the NFLPA, he “overhauled the space and delivered a new, state-of-the-art area.” When GM Darren Mougey and coach Aaron Glenn said that they “wanted to part ways” with now Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers, he “signed off on it.” And when it was determined that they wanted CB Sauce Gardner and WR Garrett Wilson to be the “foundational players of their long-term plans,” Johnson wrote the checks to sign them to their extensions. Rock: “There are going to be bumps. Johnson may revert a bit. His instinct to micro-control the organization, which has often been its downfall, can kick in at any moment.” But as long as Glenn can “keep tackling Johnson before Johnson gets a chance to sack him, the Jets may have a better chance of actually succeeding” (NEWSDAY, 7/28).

  1. please keep your grubby hands away from this team. go meddle in Crystal Palace or something, just let Glenn and Mougey do their jobs.

  2. “Man who was bad at doing other peoples’ jobs finally has the self-realization he was bad at doing their jobs and lets them do the work instead”

    Doubt.

  4. As a Knicks fan, praying he takes a page out of Dolan’s book and actually steps back. Similarly douchy owner, and it seems to have made a big difference

  5. This is the cycle. He’ll “take a step back” right up until the media pressure ramps up, then he’ll start meddling again. Woody has determined that he is the solution to any problems the team has.

  6. This is like the “best shape of his life” version for owners.

“This year, one man is on a mission to step back, and not interfere. He wears ear plugs in meetings, the GM’s number is blocked, and he shops at Costco on Sundays so he doesn’t watch football”

  7. Did we get the same during the final year(s) with Douglas…? Yeah… I fucking doubt it, Woody.

You sitting back and watching only to then interject and force your feedback is not you taking a backseat. That’s not how that works old man.

  8. I totally believe he’s going to take a complete step back and do nothing beyond own the team. The question is for how many minutes it’ll last.

  9. I get it woody meddles, but I think it’s overblown. When the team is good he doesn’t meddle, when we start underperforming, then the meddling starts. We just haven’t been good in 15 years so, there’s been more meddling than not. But I don’t think he was like that during the early Rex years.

  10. Anyone remember the link to this same exact story from like 5 years ago with JD? And we all know how that ended. With madden ratings

  11. Pulled back now that his son’s old enough to read madden ratings all by himself

  12. While we’ve heard this same shit before, this is also the first time in over a decade they actually cleaned house with the front office above and outisde of GM regime postions. They also have made some other changes that seem to be a step in the right direction. Woody doesn’t deserve any flowers until this team wins something, and even then it would take alot for us to actually give the guy the benefit of doubt. But it does seem like he is actually trying to change some shit..finally

  13. Ive said it before and will say it again. AG and Mougey should have been very clear with him about how this needed to work. AG has the pedigree to do it, Mougey is a question mark. For the record, I think Woody was letting Joe D and Saleh work for a bit. 2 years with limited talent and bad records led to aaron rodgers and everything went south. Its extremely clear firing LaFleur was a woody move to get Rodgers. Which is also very on brand. only an idiot thinks the OC is only as good as the QB he gets you.

This regimes hope is that the talent is enough to show something in years 1 and 2. If they succeed, there is a chance woody leaves them be. And the talent level is there to be a playoff team by year 2.

That said, I still think success could make Woody get crazy because hes going to want is mark on it, so we may be fucked either way.

  14. Back when Leon Hess owned the team, he, too was considered a bad owner who did stupid things. Back then, it took a coach with gravitas who commanded respect to turn him around.

We can look back to that precedent now. Parcells is an openly enthusiastic AG guy And Woody-AG already developed their own connection from the time when AG was a star player on the Parcells Jets and from his post-playing career when he was a scout for the Jets.

Woody didn’t get to actually work with Parcells, but AG is the next best thing.

Bear in mind, too, that Woody didn’t hire JD and Saleh. His brother did. Maybe a psychological sibling rivalry there.

And Woody was wounded by the NFLPA survey, as this writer and others described. His ego won’t let him keep the Jets mired in last place in future surveys.

  15. This is why I love the preseason: Hope

…and we’ll get back to Jetsing as usual in the season

…and I’ll still be here rooting, complaining, and posting with you guys

  16. I’ve heard this with every new coach that comes around. Even if it’s true, it never stays that way.
