MLB LIVE🔴 St. Louis Cardinals vs Miami Marlins – Jul 29, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
Hi folks, John Chambi alongside Chris Singleton. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Miami Marlins taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. About to get started here. And towing the slab, Miles Michaelus. What should we keep an eye on here? Well, you can see his whip is a little above the league average. Not bad, but I think in this one, he’s going to need to control that a little bit better. Try to limit hitters from getting on base. Stay in that windup instead of the stretch. And when he does allow base runners be able to throw a pitch, he’s going to get a swing and miss, get out of the inning so that a base hit doesn’t do more damage and put his team behind the eightball. Xavier Edwards leading things off and takes a shot to third. Tosses to first. One out in the top of the first and time now for the Marlins lineup. They do a lot of things well in this offense, Singi. They control the strike zone. They make pitchers work hard for outs. And as a result, one of the better OBP teams in the league. Well, what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy. Whether you go to instructional league, whether you go to spring training, you see these players even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter. They’re practicing that type of approach. Boo. And when you have that filtering through the organization, even when you call up a player, they step right in and continue with the pattern that they have established at this level, which ultimately leads to a lot of success. Next offering is downstairs. You know, you translate on base percentage, it’s basically this teams that have a high on base percentage, they don’t make outs at a very high rate. As my buddy Joe Sheen says, OBP is life. One out. Base is empty. Swing and a line drive. That’s a base hit into left field. Batting third, the designated hitter. Now it’s the rookie DH Augustine Ramirez. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. And that one fouled off. Let’s go. [Applause] And a pitch. Got him looking now. Two out. Oh, he was shopping at the buckle right there. The way that slider made him look, that was just nasty. Kyle. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Kyle Stard. Seems like he’s making contact with everything lately. Hitting better than 350 this month. Tosses to first and that is the inning. One left for Miami. Now the Cardinals will see what they can do. There’s no score. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here in St. Louis and towing the slab here, Ronnie Enriquez. What do you have on him, Chris? Well, what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season. So when you consider consistency, the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners, that’s critical in winning games today, especially when teams are depending on the big swing, the home run to win ball games. Brendan Donovan, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Ripped to short, snagged on a bounce, throws to first in time. One up, one down. Here’s a Cardinal lineup now. This group was shut out their last game, so we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored. And you want to get off to a great start. score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games which no one wants to be a part of. Ivon Herrera in the box here lets that one go for a ball. That pitch clips the outside corner and the count one and one. Two and one. last couple of pitches, breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. And that’s outside one. And that wasn’t even close. Ball four. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Batting now for St. Lewis Alec Burlson Burlington swung on Belton and that should be extra bases rounds third headed for the plate. He will score and they take the lead. Well, they strike first as he gets the job done to bring home the run. put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. One out, runner at second. Wilson Contrarus now up to the plate. [Applause] And there’s a strike on the outside corner. [Applause] in there at the knees for a strike. Well, you can’t expect to get a great pitch to hit with an open base and a runner on second. He’s going to have to really tighten up his sights here. Make sure that he can barrel up the ball. [Applause] Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Gets it to first. Awesome play there. Batting fifth, third baseman, Nolan Aronado. Here’s Nolan Aronado. You have to be careful throwing and breaking pitches, even in an O count. He loves going after the off speed stuff, and he’s really good at hitting it. That’s in there. That’s strike one. [Applause] Burlson on third with two out. [Applause] Pitch misses and that’s ball one. Rarely will you see a pitcher just to waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out. Down the line. Sanchez on the run and he can’t quite get there. It’s a foul ball. Two outs with a runner at third. Breaking ball misses down and away. [Applause] That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was [Applause] [Applause] on the ground right side. Tosses to first and they get Aronado for the out. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Cards on the board with this double. It’s an early one- nothing lead. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here in St. Louis and the batter will be the shortstop Lopez. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list and that’s a little bit high. And that’s ball one. And you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him. [Applause] And the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hitting wise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. And now here is Liam Hicks liner base hit. Just kind of sliced that one into center. Oh, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Now here is Eric Wagaman. in the air right field. He makes the grab eight third base. Here’s the rookie third baseman Graham Paulie. [Applause] fouled off. He was late. The 01 and a curve misses outside. Tying run is at first here in the top of the second. There’s the strike. That one down the line and it goes just foul. [Applause] Two outs. Not close and it deflects away. Poso onto first and he beats the throw. He’s saved. So, he’s able to reach first base despite the strikeout and that extends the inning. Kind of a tough turn of events for the defense there. Yeah, that’s maybe a little bit of a morale killer for a second. You think you’re about to go hit, but really quickly you have to refocus and be ready for the next play. We’ll see if they can work around it. First and second, two outs. And now for the Marlins, Dane Meyers. And that is downstairs. One and one. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch. And that’s off the outside edge. Two and one. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. [Applause] And that’s too high. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Fouls one away. And now three and two. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. Third out, no runs, a hit, two left. Now to the bottom of the second, it’s the Cardinals one and the Marlins nothing. Back in St. Lewis as the Cardinals come up to hit here in the last of the second bottom half of inning number two. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Mason Win, laced into left. That’s a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Nice line drive to the pole side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Here’s the catcher, Johel Poso. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. In the air, fairly deep to right field. Sanchez under it. Makes the catch for the out. Batting eight, right fielder Jordan Walker. Jordan Walker getting ready to hit. [Applause] Let’s go. to the left side, but it is well fouled. [Music] That’s inside. Larry Bullard making the calls behind the plate for us in this one. Pretty good strike zone. Well reviewed by those we talked to around the league. Yeah, he’s an umpire. He doesn’t get a lot of looks from players. Maybe here and there once in a while, but he’s appreciated back there. Just missed. Chris, do players ever change their approach in meaningful ways based on who’s umpiring or is it good to just be aware of tendencies so you’re not that surprised? I’d say the latter because pitcher’s got to pitch to his strengths regardless. The hitter’s got to hit to his strength. So, you’re aware of it, but you have to just hunt for what you can handle. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubhouses where they have pictures of all four umpires, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Victor Scott stands in here, leaves that one off the inside. And that is out of play. Win off of first with two away. Runnes. And it’s safe. It’s a stolen base. Sing. definitely showed off the wheels there. Yeah, and it turned out to be a bang bang play. Statcast gives us the data and that stolen base wasn’t possible without that sprint speed out towards right center field. Sanchez gets under it. That is the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. End of two here at Bush Stadium. It’s the Cardinals one and the Marlins nothing. On to the third inning. And now it’s the switch inning second base Edwards. Michael back to work. Edwards measures 5′ 10 in, 25 years old, a former first round pick back in 2018. And strike two. And that’s outside. fights that one away. Still one and two. Just misses with that one. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. [Music] [Applause] [Music] In the air to left center, Burlson coming on and there’s one down. Up next for the Marlins, right fieldielder Jesus Sanchez digs in now. One for one with a single so far. That misses the zone and it’s one and0. Back door breaking ball just missed right there. And boy, umpire didn’t give him the call. I bet you if he throws it again, hitter knows he’s going to have to swing it. That’s to third. Aronado to first in time. Got the out. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out at the plate. Augustine Ramirez. Right through there for a strike. 0 and one swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. Ground ball right side. Donovan the throw to first. That’s the third out. So they go quietly there. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Cardinals one and the Marlins nothing. [Applause] as we go to the last of the third. Now it’s the second baseman, Brendan Donovan. Donovan. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. One strike. [Music] That’s the ball. swing and a miss and he was fooled. Talk about tying a guy up. That was ugly. [Music] Inside. Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. [Music] that one the other way. Makes the grab. One down. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact. And that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. And now it’s Ivonne Herrera. He walked and came around to score his first time up. Misses off the plate. Ball one. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. One and one. Lifted in the air. Right field. Sanchez snags it for the second out. Now batting left fielder Alex. Two down. Base is empty. Alec Burlson. Next up for the Cardinals. He doubled home a run in his first AB. Fouled off to the right. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. Just couldn’t catch up. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another the 02 cut on and miss struck him out and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one two three nothing doing for the offense that time on to inning number four it’s the Cardinals one and the Marlins nothing back here at Bush Stadium. John Champi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Kyle Sters. Come on. Cardinal. And the first pitch is drilled in the air out to center. Scott makes the catch. One down. Now batting short stop. Otto Lopez the next up for the Marlins. Went down on strikes his first time through. And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. The next offering misses at one and one. Swing and a high-fly ball left field. Burlson has a beat on it and it’s caught for the out. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. line drive. Oh, he gloves it. Miami down in order. They trail here one- nothing. [Applause] Ready to go. Bottom four. And now the first baseman, Wilson Contras. Wilson Contras. [Applause] Ball one there. [Applause] That one finds the zone and the count. One and one. That clips the corner. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. got him swinging. I’m not sure that was the exact location the pitcher wanted, but it worked. He got the swing and miss and I’m sure a bit of sigh of relief after seeing that one go through the zone. Here’s Nolan Aronado grounded out his first time and that drops in for a strike. right through there for a strike quickly in an 02 hole. You’re going to have to give something up here in terms of power if you want to put the ball in play with any authority. Cut on and lifted in the air. Two down. Now batting. Two outs. Base is empty. Mason win the next to hit. Singled and stole a base’s first time. Knee high strike. Another one. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up to this point. Two down to check swing called strike. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. So they make short work of him there. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the Cardinals one and the Marlins nothing. And we’re back. And now Eric Wagman number 33. Fouled off down the right side. You know, these Marlins as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Wind fires across the diamond and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth. Now batting third base Paulie will hit next. Reached on a drop. Third strike his first time. And that’s in for a strike. Throwing one. The fish down by a run. And we’re at the top of the fifth. Next pitch is outside. [Music] rips one to left. That’s a base hit. And they have their first base runner since the second inning. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. [Applause] Runner out at first with one gone. Here’s the center fielder, Dane Meyers. He’s 0 for one. And the pitch is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one man at first. One away. [Applause] A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. And that one is inside ball one. Well, he missed badly with that 02 fast ball. hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. The one, two, swing and a miss. Struck him out. He’s notched four strikeouts now. And he’ll be beating himself up all the way back to the dugout. Got a bit just couldn’t get to it. I think that slider really caught way more of the plate than it was supposed to. Xavier Edwards gets a chance to hit here. Go for two in this one. And a foul ball. [Applause] Paulie the runner at first with two gone. Come on. In for a strike and it’s nothing and two. [Music] Swing in a line drive. Base hit out into center field. And now first and second with two outs. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. First and second, two outs. Jesus Sanchez the next up for the Marlins. One for two. And the first pitch misses for ball one. One and out. Two on, two outs. Oh, two and0 [Applause] and that one fouled off. [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. Two on, two outs in the air on the infield. Aronado drops into the glove and that’s the third out. Marlins strand a pair. They still trail one- nothing. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Jansen Junk. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. Jans, Johel Poso now at the plate. Fly to right, his first time. And that’s in the dirt. Signs of activity in the pen for the Marlins. Calantrol up and loosening in the pen. [Applause] And another ball. [Applause] Fouled off left side [Music] [Applause] late on that fast ball. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. And now Jordan Walker. [Applause] And that’s outside. [Applause] [Music] Nobody out. runner at first. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] Hit on the ground. Might be two. Off balance feed. There’s one. And that’s all they’ll get. Now batting center fielder Victor Scott II. And up next for St. Louis, Victor Scott. He’s 0 for one. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it, but pushing the offensive side for just a second. Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. There’s the strike. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. Now batting second baseman Brendan Donovan. Here’s the second base Donovan. Breaking ball in there for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. [Music] And that’s downstairs. And the count even one and one. Pop foul out of play off to the right. [Music] the other way and that’s just foul. Two outs. That one inside now two and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. [Applause] Throw in holds the lead runner at second. Two on now with two away. Desated hitter Ivon. Ivon Herrera digs in now. That one finds the corner. That’s strike one. Walker on second. Donovan on a first with two down. Right side. Sanchez settles under it and makes the catch and that ends the inning. So the Cards strand a couple. They lead it one- nothing. Back here in St. Louis. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Now here’s the Marlins DH. Augustine Ramirez. Michael back to work. Just missed. That’s the ball. [Applause] Swings through that one for strike one. It really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. BS it off. Still one and two. Oh, great grab on the dive from his backside and they get the out. Well, he makes a great decision to go ahead and dive to stop that ball. Nice little flip to the pitcher covering. Those are those PFPs, pitchers fielding plays. Here’s the left fielder, Kyle Sters. First pitch misses. Sters measures 6’2 in. 27 years old and they went out and made a trade for him last season. Swanging a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance onto the warning track and he hauls it in. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Otto Lopez the next up for the Marlins. Come on. Come on. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, this guy on the mountain’s done a lot better than we would have expected. And the hitters just don’t seem to have the right game plan. They’re taking too many mistake pitches for strikes. That one drilled left field and foul ball. Two down on foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Make it six shut out innings for him out there. Now it’s the Cardinals one and the Marlins nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here is Alec Burlson. Alec Burlington into the outfield. Base hit. So a runner aboard to start the inning. That’s right. Now batting. Here’s Contrarus. Now Wilson Contrarus. Roll to short. Could be two. Off balance feed. There’s one and two. In time to first for the double play. Up next for the nice soft hands on the back hand right there in the six hole. Starts the double play. That’s not an easy throw, but he puts it on the money. Really good job to get that double play started. Here’s Nolan Aronado. That one misses. One and0. He swings and fouls one off. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. A one-two count. And all he’s seen is fast balls. You’ve got to expect something off speed. Stay back. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. And that just misses. Well, I I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. Two out space is empty. Next pitch inside and a full countdown. The right-hander gives up the two out walk. That’s a nice atbat and a great take on 32. Probably could have gone either way in that spot around the knee. Runner first with two away. Mason win. Next up for the Cardinals and he dodges that fast. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. [Music] In the air, left field down the line. Sters makes the grab on the run. So, they can’t do anything with the leadoff single there. We’re through six full. It’s the Cardinals one and the Marlins nothing. We go to the top of the seventh and here’s the catcher, Liam Hicks. You can tell by their swings, this lineup is having trouble gauging speeds. Timing is everything in hitting and right now they just don’t have it tonight. His slider has been really impressive. I mean, tight spin. Seems like the hitters aren’t picking it up out of the hand. looking to get the tying run on base. That’s the ball. And that drops in for a strike. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Jojo Romero the southpaw is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in. Mah the right-hander also getting loose. hit in the air left field and that should be extra bases into second base. The tying run is on with a leadoff double. Well, that was an important at bat in this game. So, great job there stepping up to the challenge. Now, we’ll see if they can pick up that tying run and start us over here in the late innings. Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan. Miles Michaelus will depart. Really solid performance out of him as he leaves with a slim lead. We’ll take a break. New arm when we get back. Now pitching. Phil on a pitch out of the pen here. And he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. And here’s the first baseman, Eric Wagaban. [Applause] Inside corner. And that’s called a strike. with the go-ahead run at the plate here in the top half of inning number seven. Swing and a highf fly ball down the right field line. Walker pulls it in on the run. And he’s in safely at third with one out. Now batting third baseman Graham Paulie. Graham Paulie the next up for the Marlins. You have to find a way to score the runner from third, especially with less than two outs. Wait for the pitch you want and hit it as hard as you can. Outside ball one. Don’t be surprised to ball on the ground to the corners that they come home with the baseball instead of going to first base. That one is absolutely belted. This one could be trouble in to score from third and this game is tied in the seventh and he’s into second base with one away as the go ahead run. Huge at bat to bring home the tying run at this point in the game. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle, not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. Really important at bat coming up now. And now the center fielder Dane Meyers. One and0 in the dirt but kept close. And no movement on the bases. It’s ball one. [Applause] That’s outside and now two and0 right through there for a strike. [Applause] And that’s fouled off. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. Line drive. He holds it in. Two away. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. And up next for Miami, Xavier Edwards, one for three. This one in the dirt and an excellent job keeping it right there. Two down. Go ahead run in scoring position. Next pitch is outside off the catcher and rolls away. Probably ruled a pass ball as the runner moves up to third. [Music] [Applause] up the middle. Win. Now the throw to first on the run and that’s a nice play to end the inning. Marlins get a run on the RBI double even now at 1-1. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Kane Gibson. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the ball. And now the Cardinals catcher pos 63. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Miami’s bullpen with some action. Freddy Tarnick preparing to come on if needed. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. And the next pitch is way outside. [Applause] That one almost got him. Oh, three ball strike. [Music] [Applause] Swing and a miss. Had him out front for the strike out. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him full walk. So, up next, Jordan Walker just missed. [Applause] Next offering in there for a strike and it’s one and one. All tied up here in the bottom of the seventh. Ripped to third and that quickly two away. Now batting center fielder Victor Scott two down now and here is Victor Scott. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball and that’s in the dirt and that is ball and another ball. Two balls. No strike. [Applause] That misses and now 3 and 0. Brendan Donovan in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And there’s the automatic clearly taking all the way there in that three-0 count. It was a cookie right down the middle inside and that’s ball four. And he’s a guy that will certainly think about stealing a bag or two. Not the kind of speed you want to put on base in a tie game. Brendan Donovan. Next up for the Cardinals. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and it’s one and0. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Snap throw to first and he dives back in safely. Two gone. The possible go ahead run at first. Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Two outs and that’s in there at the knees. [Music] And the slider just misses. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. [Applause] 3-2 now. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. ground ball up the middle and that chance handled. Inning over. So, it’s no runs, no base hits, no errors, and one left. We look ahead to inning number eight. All tied 1-1. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Jojo Romero. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Romero Sanchez at the plate now and that’s inside. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Ryan Helley getting ready to go. Ley getting cranked up as well. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. [Applause] And that’s outside and the count is even. Two and two and that’s who win. It’s a strike out. Well, we saw a solid effort out of their starter and the ball is following suit. It’s just a good day as a manager or as a pitching coach when you can hand the ball off to multiple arms and get stability from all of their performances. [Applause] Ramirez stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Next pitch misses way outside. [Music] [Applause] There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Tap foul at the plate. [Applause] Strike three and that’s two in a row. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. He’s having fun at bats if you’re a hitter. I’m so glad I’m retired. Kyle Sters the next up for the Marlins. 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. swaying in a miss. There’s the slider one. And a slider in there for a strike. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. [Applause] That missed by a lot and it’s one and two on the ground to third. A sliding stop over to first. They get the out and that’ll do it. And the Marlins down quietly. Score remains tied 1-1. [Applause] Now pitching for back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Freddy Tarnick. This is his third time out this year. So now here’s the Cardinals designated hitter, Ivon Herrera. Ivon Herrera. [Applause] Swinging a ground ball. Fair ball. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Turned on it nicely. Definitely a little out in front of the pitch, but he didn’t hook around it too much and was able to keep it fair down the line. Now at the plate, Alec Burlson. And he hits a ground ball right side, but that rolls foul. [Applause] That one off the mark. And now it’s even one and one. Activity in the bullpen. Calcant up and throwing. [Applause] tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. The go-ahead run aboard at first. Nobody out. [Applause] Cap dances out of the way of that one. In the air out towards right center. Meyers on the move to the alley. He’s got it and there’s one down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He’s saved extra bases for sure. The pitcher has spread. He’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. And up to hit is Wilson Contrarus for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. on the ground down the line and it’s fouled. [Applause] That one’s upstairs. Ball one. [Applause] One away. Tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. [Applause] Fights that one away. Still one and two. Gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] lines and this might be trouble. Lead runner makes the turn at second head and it will play. He’ll score. The Cardinals have the lead. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. [Applause] One out, runner at second. Nolan Aronado the next to hit. And the first pitch misses for ball one. One out and a runner at second here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Both [Applause] headed towards the corner and an automatic double now as it hops the wall and found Brown as a run scores. He puts a great swing on that pitch and drives home the run and that was always going to be a double but the bounce over the wall just took the guesswork out of it right away. It was a nice swing. [Applause] manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Freddy Tarnick departs and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So, the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now, pitching for Anthony Bender taking over on the mound. Well, good luck against this guy. He’s been extremely tough to hit this year. His numbers are excellent. One out, runner at second. Mason Win will hit next. Outside low and that’s ball one. Aronado leads off second with one gone in the inning. [Applause] That one fouled off. Man at second now. This one gets away from the catcher. Runner holds. Count goes to two and one. [Applause] in the dirt. Runner at second here. One gone. [Applause] And ball four to a board. Now batting number six. Now for St. Louis, Johel Poso. [Applause] That was the sweeper, but it missed. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. [Music] That one finds the zone and it’s a ball and a strike. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] center field. Meyers sizes this one up, makes the catch. That’s out number two. Up next for the Cardinals, right fielder Jordan Walker. Jordan Walker next up for the Cardinals. 0 for three in this one. And that one is downstairs. One and0. Swing and a high-fly ball right field and makes the grab. And that is the inning. A couple of runs in the inning puts them ahead through eight full. It’s the Cardinals three and the Marlins won. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Ryan Hley and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one an inning so he’ll be tough to get to. Now it’s going to be Otto Lopez 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. [Applause] First offering misses badly for ball one. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. drilled out towards left center field. That’s back there. That one is gone. And that should quiet this home crowd. His 12th of the season. It’s 3-2. Just relentless. This team will not quit. Most times it’s the pitcher looking at the scoreboard for velocity, but in this case it’s the hitter. He just turned around triple digits at the dish. I don’t even know how he saw that pitch. Maybe he didn’t, but he got a home run out of it. Liam Hicks now at the plate. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. [Applause] Got him to chase one above the zone there. So many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup and that misses. Two and one. Really been able to slow down the game tonight with his at bats and the biggest one he’s had so far. He doesn’t look anxious at all. To the right side. Donovan in plenty of time. The first now one gone in the ninth. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make. if you can’t execute the small stuff. Just like we saw, he’s two outs away. Eric Wagaman the next up for the Marlins. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases in the air left field. Burlson sizing this one up. Squeezes it. And there’s two down. Now batting third base down to their final allow and at the plate for Miami Graham Paulie. [Applause] [Applause] Fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Two down to that one finds the zone and that is strike two. The Marlins down to their final strike and that skips in the dirt. [Applause] hit to the left side and this is going to do it. Safe and that’s his third hit. One out away from this game being over, but an infield single keeps them alive. They’re still breathing and maybe this provides that last minute spark. So, two down. Here’s the center fielder Dane Meyers. [Applause] He’s got it. Ball game. And the Cardinals hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Well, this was a tightly played game. Got a little of everything. Some timely hitting, runs on the board, key pitching, and defense in certain spots. Definitely a fun one to watch. Heat. Heat. What’s the move?
