MLB LIVE🔴 Houston Astros vs Washington Nationals – Jul 29, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
Welcome to Houston, Texas and Dykin Park. Inner League Baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Washington Nationals taking on the Houston Astros. John Shabi and Chris Singleton with you. Well, Singi, this ballpark still among the game’s best. When the roof is open, it feels like an outdoor ballpark. And then you have the shade and the cool when the roof is closed. Yeah. And formerly Tal Hill out there in center. You still have the Crawford boxes in left. A unique setback in left center field which causes the left fielders to have to play differently. But there is a lot of character to this place. First pitch coming at you right after the break. Just about to get underway. And starting this one, Jason Alexander. And Chris, he’s a guy that gets better when things get tough. Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the RA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that RA will have dropped over time. Got it. As we take a look at the Nationals lineup, one guy leading the way offensively for this club right now, James Wood and Boo, he’s a big time run producer for these guys, man. Leading the team in homers, runs batted in, doing damage on the regular, man. Making opposing pitchers just sweat out there. It’s kind of fun to watch. Get ready for a show when he steps into the box. James Wood stands in now and watches strike one. One out. Base is empty. And a slider misses down and away. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So that’s a good take by him. Swing and a liner foul off to the right. Ball outside. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. One down. Base is empty. Got him. Swinged. Pulled the string of the change up. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Two outs. Base is empty. Here’s the second baseman. Luis Garcia gets the call. That’s strike one. Two down. Nobody on. This guy’s not wasting any pitches. hitters got to get into swing mode. This is a good time to expand the zone. Throw something maybe down in the dirt. And they’ll do it again. Line drive and makes the play. And that’s out number three. Three up, three down for Washington. Now here come the Astros. No score. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. back here at Dyken Park. And today’s starting pitcher, McKenzie Gore. Well, Boo may be a little pedestrian there in terms of the ERA, but with those numbers, you expect to be in a ball game and have an opportunity to win. And really, that’s all his teammates can ask for. So, we’ll see if he’s able to be consistent in this one. Here’s the rookie right fielder. Astros right fielder number 11. Tap foul at the plate. Good zip on that fast ball at the bottom of the zone. If he’s there all day, it’s going to be a tough one for the hitters. Not even close there. And the count even one and one. Hard hit right side sends it to first. One gone. Bottom half of the first. Okay, let’s check out the lineup. And Singi against the southpaw on the mound. The skippers loaded this lineup with righty bats. Certainly following the conventional wisdom here, Boo. That extra split second can make a big difference for a hitter. So, these righty batters will need to take advantage and make this tactical move pay off. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altuve. He’s done a great job making contact recently, hitting better than 350 this month. Just off the inside edge. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. rips that one center field. Young pulls it in on the run. Wow. He looked like he was running before the ball was hit. Didn’t have much time as that was a hard hit liner, but a nice job of covering a lot of ground in a short amount of time. Come on. Victor Keratini in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. Two outs. Ball. One and two. And that one is in the dirt and the count’s even at two. That to right. That is the inning. Scoreless after one. Back here in Houston, second inning, set to go. And now here’s the veteran DH, Josh Bell. Alexander back to work. fouled off left side outside low and it’s one and one umpire for this one. Freddy Ferguson a consistent umpire by all accounts. Yeah, I think the book on him is that he’s not necessarily by the book with his strike zone. But once you figure out where he’s calling strikes, you can pretty much count on him to stay with that throughout the game. Yeah, that’s fouled off. What about an umpire’s height? How much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like? Yeah, I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit, which you know, as a former hitter, you like that. You wanted the ball up. You didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently. That one off the mark and now it’s three and two. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the Here’s Bell with a blast deep to right. And that one’s gone. His 14th of the year. And just like that, they’re out front. It’s one- nothing. That was blasted. Absolutely no doubt off the bat. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Nathaniel Low up to hit. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the top of the second. Just missed. That missed. That’s a ball. Just missed. That pitch in for a strike and it’s two and two. Swing and a miss. Strike him out. Oh, really went aggressive in with that slider. A good two strike pitch right there. At worst case scenario, it’s weak contact in play. Exactly where he and the catcher wanted it. Brady House digging in for the Nationals up the middle. Altuve tosses to first. Two away. Batting seventh, right fielder number 51. So two down now and here is Dalen Lyall. And the first pitch misses for ball one. One out. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Two outs. Base is empty. That one is absolutely belted. going back and that one is off the wall now around second. Going for third. The relay throw. He is safe. It’s a triple. Just missed out on the homer. Riley Adams. So, a runner at third, two outs. Riley Adams digging in for the Nationals. And that’s way high. And that’s ball one, two outs. And that one’s a little bit low and a count is 2 and 0. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Makes the sliding stop and that’s a nice play to end the inning. Nats on the board first courtesy of this solo homer. It’s an early one- nothing lead. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Houston now, it’s going to be Christian Walker. One of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first. He is that good with the glove. You’re talking about top of the list. Elite defensive first baseman. Not close with that one. Ball one. first baseman are involved in just about every single play. So, when you have somebody so solid over there, uh, you can breathe a little easier. So, two balls and no strikes. The other thing about an elite defensive first baseman like him, it it just instills a ton of confidence in those guys playing third and short that have to make those long tough throws at times. And he just handles them so well. So, he really makes the entire infield better with his glove. at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. You’re not just talking about the ability to pick, Chris. One of the things about him, the range is impressive as he’s able to go to his right and get to those balls of the hole. And that one is lifted in the air. Ly makes the play. One up, one down. Batting fifth catcher, Yer. Here’s a catcher to hit. Yiner Diaz. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. You come into the game knowing that unless the ball’s in the dirt or gets by him, we’re probably not going to steal anything today. So, that’s where you want to get a little more aggressive on your secondary lead and hope that some base hits, some slog, some home runs can come into play. Next pitch is outside. Well, I’ll say this. As a former position player and base steeler, when you come into a game and you’ve got a guy like this behind the dish with a big arm, you really have to change your approach. Can’t try to steal cuz you’ll get thrown out. Maybe get a little bigger lead, be aggressive on the secondary, but this type of guy shuts the running game down. One down, base is empty. Cut on and miss. Curve ball struck him out. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curve ball down low to get him swinging. Now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days, that’s a devastating combination. And now John Singleton swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Lyall makes the catch and that is that. We played two innings. It’s one to nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now it’s going to be Jacob Young. Wow. No fair right there. I mean, that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch. Just miss the ball. And now one and two. One and two. Count up the middle. Sneaks through base head and that turns the lineup over. Now batting short stop. So the batting order turns over. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. 0 for one with a fly out to center. And that one wrapped foul. Young on at first. Nobody out. That missed inside and that is ball one. Next offering is fouled back. One, two now. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and he’s registered threeks in this one. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. And now up for Washington, James Wood. He struck out swinging at his first at ball one, no strikes. Wood 22 years old and he was a second round pick in 2021. man at first, one away. Get out of here. Runner on the goal, pitching for a strike. Throw to second. That goes to show you Steeler base is a tough thing to do and far from a sure thing. Even with big time speed, it’s not easy to catch him, but that was a great catch and throw. Quick, not rushed, and accurate. Two down. Nobody on out to short. Gets it to first. Third out. Nationals go quietly, but they hold a one- nothing lead. set for the bottom of the third. And stepping in for the Astros, Mauricio Duban. Mauricio Duban. Right through there for a strike. That one fouled off. That misses the zone. Now one and two. Pretty standard high O2 fastball right there. If you’re smart, go to look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Fights that one away. Still one and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Next offering is down low. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Here we go. Now this is in the air down the line and out number one on the grab. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Chaz McCormick now in the box comes up empty with a swing there. Go swinging a miss at a slider. Got some cut action to it. Velocity pretty good on that slider so far. Moving the ball around nicely. Way inside. Straighten him up a little bit. Breaking ball inside. Two balls, two strikes. Count is full outside and that is ball four. And that’s their first base runner of the game. Oh, breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. just couldn’t find the strike zone. Now snap throw to first and he’s back in there. short stands in here. Takes ball one low. Can’t find it here. That’s six straight balls. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. The 20 is in for a strike. Fast ball for a strike. Maybe a two ball. Five, four, three. Double play and the inning is over. Nothing across here this half. On to inning number four. It’s the Nationals one and the Astros nothing. Back here at Dyen Park out of the fourth. Now it’s the second base Luis Garcia. Check swing. Did he go? No, he didn’t. Slapped foul. That one misses. Two and one. Lined and that’s a base hit. Just kind of slice that one into center. showed some really nice patience in that at bat. Worked himself into a good count. Pretty good spot hard and inside, but that’s a perfect example of keeping your hands inside the ball tight to the body. The ability to take that back up the middle shows his approach is to use the entire field. Belling for the second time and that’s strike one. Garcia gets his lead at first with nobody out and that is out of play. And the 02 ball one there. Next offering way off the plate. Strike him out. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Duvong calls it in and there’s one away. Now batting first baseman Nathaniel Low. Here’s Nathaniel Low 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. And that’s a base hit. Lead runner holds at second base. First and second with one down. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Challenged him with the fast right in the heart of the zone and he was clearly ready to jump all over it. And now here is Brady House. Line drive caught. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting the line drive that finds a glove. But you will need some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Now a chance for Jaylen Lyle. One for one. He tripled in his first trip. There’s his strike. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. From Valdez, a lefty looks to be getting himself ready. Susa also getting ready. First and second, two down. Houston. Next pitch is outside. swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Two and two. This one in the dirt. just misses with that one. Really good take, especially with two strikes. First and second, two down. Top half of inning number four. And that’ll load the bases. A great back and forth in that at bat. Yeah, he had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow boo, he found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. Adams can’t hold up. And that’s a strike. It’s 0 and one. That one close. ruled a ball. One and one and a swing and a miss. I would throw him another break. Try to go again with the fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. Squeezes it and that’s the third out. So they load the bases but leave them stranded. And midway in the fourth, it’s the Nationals one and the Astros nothing. And we’re back. John Shabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Cam Smith. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And that drops in for a strike. If he doesn’t get a knock right here, that pitch he just took is going to eat at him for a while. You might not see another pitch like that from a top level guy like this. Pulls that one foul. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Foul ball still a one and two count. Bows it back with two strikes. Right side and it goes just foul. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like, but you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s going to blink first. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Seven fouls in a row. Such an impressive at bat we’re seeing right here. regardless of how it ends up. Ripped on the ground to second. Fires over to first. That was a strong at bat even though he couldn’t find a way on base. Now batting second baseman Jose Jose Altuve up to hit here. 0 for one so far. Altuveet always seems to be setting records or reaching milestones. Boo. In 2023, he became the fastest player to reach 2,000 career hits, 200 home runs, and 200 stolen bases in MLB history. Man, 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a lowend fast ball for some pitchers. Hit hard base hit. So, they get a man aboard with a one out single. up next. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. One gone, runner at first. So, next up for Houston, Victor Keratini. He’s 0 for one. That one missing inside. Altuve over at first with one away. That’s hard hit on the line into the dive and he got it. Up next for the Astros. First baseman Christian. So, a great diving catch and that was only possible because of the route he took to get there. Right, Chris? Yeah. Statcast shows us just how efficient that route to the ball was. In fact, that’s about as good as it gets. Pretty much a direct line to it. And perhaps he was a wide receiver in a different life. I don’t know. But man, great job to hold on all the way through the dive as well. No fumble caused by the ground. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. They stopped the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. He was all over that one. Good night in the air under it, but he smoked that ball back up the middle. Timing was just perfect. got great wood on it and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it. Stepping in, Yiner Diaz struck out swinging his first time. Had a curve drops in for a strike. 0 and one tying run and scoring position. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Coming home, fires to the plate. It’s off the mark and he scores. We’re tied at one. Well, he comes through clutch with the RBI single. That was big. Diamond on the swing was good. able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. So now here’s the DH. John Singleton flyed to right his first time and that one is lifted in the air. Ly on the move, makes the grab and that is the third out of the inning. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. Call even now at 1-1. You’re dialed into the show. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth Valdez. and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Up now for Washington, Jacob Young, one for one with a single so far in the dirt and it’s one and0. Well, these gnats being a little too patient at the plate in this game. They found themselves behind in the count quite a bit. They’re trying to be patient, but it’s mostly resulting in outs, not base runners. And you could argue it’s making things more difficult at the plate. And a foul ball. That one missed. It’s a lead off walk and that’s the go-ahehead run now batting short stop. So the next lineup turns over here. CJ Abrams now for two in this one that catches the corner. There was a high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trusted and fouled off. Rudder at first with no outs here with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Next one misses and the count one and two. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. And a ball even the count way to lay off that pitch down. And that’s downstairs and outside. Full count. Good job to fight that one off. hanging in there pretty good against the lefty. And now the lefty line drive and that’s a fair ball. Runner holds it second. But they’ve got something going on here. Oh, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high lever spot right there. Maybe a little out front of the pitch right there, but he squared it up pretty good and he kept it inside the line and just a really nice job on the other side by the defense to hold that to a long single. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run. Wood gets out of the way. That’s ball one. This one belted deep left field on its way. Gone. Homer number 25 on the year and they take the lead. It’s 41. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage. Even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Rober Valdez won’t go any further. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Now pitching. Bennett Susa will take over here. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. And now it’s Luis Garcia, one for two to third. Dubong, slings it across. Finally gets the first out here on the ground. batting the designated hitter Josh Bell. And now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. He’s already homered in this game. Fast for a strike. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and the count even one and one and a swing and a miss there. One, two. looked like it was a little bit up. Still only one out here in the inning. Into center, brings it in with a nice running grab. Two down. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. low now at the plate as he swings through strike one. In the on deck circle, you really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast ball. Last thing you want to do is miss a good hitable fast ball early in the count. Two outs on the ground right side slings to first. Third out, that ends the frame. But the National strike for three, all coming via this three-run homer. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Houston. Bottom of the inning. Now here is Mauricio Dub. Don Gore back to work. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Well, these Astros need to bring up the quality of their at bats and specifically their swings. They’re trying to find ways to drive the ball with some authority, but it’s just not happening for them so far. Zero extra base hits in the game. So, it’s been tough for him to get anything going. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Chaz McCormack up next for the Astros. Work to walk in his first trip to the plate. That’s in for a strike at 95 and1. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. There’s a swing in a miss. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. Dubong aboard here at first with nobody out. Ripped to third and caught. That’s a big first out of the inning. He showed off his skills catching the line drive, but most importantly, he kept the runner out of scoring position. Things would look a little different if he didn’t make that play. Now it’s Zack Short. He hit into a double play his first time up. First pitch just misses. The Stros trailing by three. Last half of inning number five. That one catches the zone and it’s one and one. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. stay out of that double play. Left field way back there. Going back on this one and brings it in at the wall. Now battling number 11. And now the right fielder Cam Smith. He’s grounded out a couple of times. And ball one to the right fielder. That one in 95. Missed up top. Ball two. And another ball. Fast ball for a strike. Well, this looks like it’s going to be a wasted opportunity. Frustrating when you get the leadoff man on, but you can’t get him into scoring position. They’re going to need a big knock. Try to put something up on the board. Check swing and he went and the count’s full. Counts full. And a pop off right side foul territory. Low makes the grab and that is that. One left for Houston and they trail it 4-1. All set for the top of the six. And now up for Washington, Brady House. Susa goes 6′ 3 in 220 lbs and he was a 10th round pick back in 2018. And first offering is fouled off. swings through that one for strike two. No ball. Two strikes. That’s inside. His understanding of the strike zone. Very impressive. That was a very close O2 fast ball. I just don’t know how you take that. Next offering is downstairs. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Well, he just had no answer for that hard inside fast ball right there. Just blew it by him. And not every pitcher likes working inside, especially with two strikes. They don’t want to hit a batter and waste an opportunity to put him away. But if you can locate that fast ball just like he did, most hitters aren’t looking for it and it becomes very difficult to get a piece of up for the third time here. Watch as that one miss. Two and0. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Base is empty, one away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Fouls one off. Two and two. Line to left and foul ball. also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. That one close. Three and two now. And that one popped in the air left field. Keratini calls it in. Two away. Now batting catcher Riley Adams. Riley Adams digging in for the Nationals. First pitch and he just misses. Highfly ball down the left field line. That one back there gone. It finds the Crawford boxes. A home run. He circles the bases and they add to their lead. It’s 5-1. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Well, not every home run is a majestic blast off the bat. And even though he hit it pretty well, it was anything but a sure thing to get out. But today, the conditions were right. He got just enough of it. And I think the backspin really helped that thing carry. So, two down. Jacob Young getting ready to hit and he lays down a bunt and he beats it out. Now that this is a big part of his skill set and he puts himself into situations where he can rely on his speed to impact the ball game and this is just another example of it and we’ll see what else he can do now that he’s on first. CJ Abrams digging in for the Nationals. Hit in the air center field. McCormick has it sized up. He makes the grab and that’ll do it. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s now a 51 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here in Houston, where we go bottom six now. The number two hitter, Jose Altu. Altuve. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Well, they say it’s the best pitch in baseball. Strike one. You get ahead on a good hitter as well. Gives you a little bit more confidence to move through the at bat. That catches the top part of the zone and it’s 0 and two. Boo. That hook’s looking pretty sharp today. Just a solid pitching performance so far and I really think it’s because of that curveball. Ground ball left side over to low and that’s one out as they get the leadoff hitter in the six. Up next for the Astros, left fielder Victor Vicarini at the plate. And remember, he was absolutely robbed of a base hit last time up. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Well, it’s been a very impressive outing so far. His command has been a big part of it. Even when he misses, he misses outside the strike zone, which is exactly what a pitcher wants. drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck and that one hops the wall safely into second. He’s got a double. Put a pretty good jolt into that one. Great swing, nice balance and weight transfer and he got it to drop in out there in the deep part of the field. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. And now it’s Christian Walker and first offering is fouled off. Swang and a miss. There’s that change up. Another O2 count right here. Pitcher just in the driver’s seat. He can go anywhere he wants to go right here. Got him swinging for the strike out. Blew the express right by his bat for strike three. And now the catcher comes up to him. Yer Diaz. And there’s the ball. That’s a ball. Carini at second with two down upstairs. Two out. Misses outside. Ball three. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter count. So now two on and two outs. Pitch count’s getting up there now. And not saying that’s the reason for this walk, but this is the point in the game when every sign of wavering starts to get everyone’s attention. That’s a ball in the dirt. Blocked. Activity in the bullpen. Number 61 appears to be getting loose. Parker, a left-hander, also throwing. Next pitch is outside and the count two nothing. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Two on, two outs, and a foul ball. Makes the count two and one. Let’s go, Houston. Two outs. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Missed inside with the curb. Mauricio Dubon waiting to hit for Houston. Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. Got him swinging. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. So, it’s no runs on a hit, no errors, and two are left. We’re through six full. It’s the Nationals 5 and the Astros won. Now pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Brian King. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Leading off, James Wood. He’s already homerred here in this one. That misses. And that’s ball one. Just missed. That one misses and that’s ball three. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. 3-1. And now the count filled up. Three and two. Full count. Got him swinging. Well, when you throw the same pitch back to back, that’s how you want to do it. Set him up in the strike zone, then extend a little bit from there and see if you can get him to chase. Nicely done with the slider right there. it on the ground to short on the run. Sends it over to first and it beats him. What a play. Good sinker low on the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Josh Bell at the plate now. He launched the solo shot back in the second inning of this one. Yeah, that was big for these guys early on. Definitely helped them get off on the right foot. First pitch misses. Two down, nobody on. You’re in the top half of inning number seven. Next offering is in for a strike. And there’s a foul ball. And a good eye there. Two balls, two strikes, and it remains two and two on a line. base hit around first heading for two in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Two hits for him in this one. Both for extra bases. Got to feel good about that. He really let that ball travel on the outside part of the plate. But that’s a great example that you can still drive the baseball that’s away. Rip that one down the line for the double. So, runner at second, two down. Nathaniel Low digging in for the Nationals. Inside, just missed. Two outs and one in scoring position. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. on the ground out to short. Handles, throws the first that ends the frame. So they can’t do anything with a two-out double. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Nationals five and the Astros won. now pitching for the next. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Number 61. And he’s got a nice lead to work with, so he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. Here’s Mauricio Dub for the Astros. Third base Mauricio Duban. Swang belted. Young flying after this one and that one hops the wall and that’s a leadoff double. No waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Kez McCormack up next for the Astros. And first offering is fouled off and one strike. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the bottom of the seventh. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Man at second. Swing and a ball popped in the air. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball. The one two swanging a ball drilled center field. Young sizing this one up. He’s got it. Grounder tags at second and he’s in safely at third with one out. Up next for the Astros, the shorts stop, Zack Short. So, a man aboard, Zack Short, the next to hit. That clips the corner. Swinging a foul straight back. Dubong stands at third with one gone in the inning. That one just misses. Tough to take a two strike change up that just missed. I think it froze him. Misses off the play. Two and two. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. ground ball right side and that’s just foul. There’s a high chopper house rolls across the diamond now two away as they get a run across. Two down, base is empty. Cam Smith up next for the Astros. 0 for three in this one. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Slice down the right side. Next pitch is slider that misses outside. Well, I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. Two down. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. swing and that ball smashed on a line. Young makes the catch and go over. So they get one run on one base hit, no errors and nobody left on. We look ahead to inning number eight. It’s the Nationals five and the Astros two. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Cooper Hmel. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. At the plate, third baseman Brady House. Fast for a strike. 0 and one. Action in the pen down there. Steven Ochard, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. swings and misses and it’s nothing in two. Ball one there. 02 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. That missed by it’s two and two. Next offering misses down and away. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field and it drops in. So a runner aboard to start the inning. Now batting number 51 Next to hit, Dalen Lyall in there for strike one. Fought off foul. in the air right side. Smith on his way over. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one away. Now batting catcher Riley Adams. First offering and it just misses. Right through there for a strike. Oh, that squirts away a little bit. Ruer takes off. Swinging a foul out of play. Breaking ball misses down and away. Count is full. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the offsp speed pitch but just a little tardy on the fast ball and ball four to a he went with the off speed and walked the hitter. Man, you got to challenge the guy with the fast. Two on, one out. Next to hit for the Nats, Jacob Young. Oh, bottom of the order here, Boo. You got to go right after this guy as they look to pick up an add-on run. And the number nine guy at the plate and that one fouled off. Let’s get the win. Line drive and it’s into the gap. Brown’s third headed for the plate. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single and they’re up by four. Comes through with the RBI. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension and he met it out front for the line drive knock. CJ Abrams digging in for the Nationals. That’s off the mark. And that’s ball one. lined into left center and that should be extra bases. One run across headed for the plate. He’ll score. Two runs are in. Picks himself up a couple of ribbies. Man, that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way. Split the gap and know that you’ve got extra bases right off the bat. That’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep at night. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Cooper Hmel is done and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now pitching on the mound now Steven. And with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers and their numbers, but I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. Now, the left fielder, James Wood, certainly a factor in this one thanks to his three-run blast back in the fifth. Well, definitely one of the most impactful swings of the game. A big reason why they’re working with the lead and looking to add to it right here, Boo. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle. And you get it right where you want it. Late on that fast ball. He got away with one there, but he knows he can’t go into that spot very often against a guy like this. That one finds the zone and the count one and two. Swing and a miss and he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate, you know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Garcia in the box now. No balls in a strike. Runner at second. Two down and we’re in the top of the eighth. Swinging a miss. He was late. Strike two. 02 and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Outside low. Going to count one and two. Two two runner at second. Two down. That misses the zone. And that’s ball three. That one the other way. And it looks like trouble. And that’s going to kick into the corner. The run comes in from second and they’re pulling away up by seven now. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. I’ll tell you when you smoke a line drive into the gap like that. I mean, sure, home runs are king, but I feel like nothing makes you feel like a true professional hitter more than a bolt the other way. Man at second here with two away. Here’s Josh Bell. And that’s a strike. There’s a swing and a drive that’s back there and it’s out of here. Another homer, his second home run of the game and they add to the lead. It’s 11-2. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop and they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one, Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. His bat looks like it’s in the zone for such a long time and that gives him the ability to get barrel on it and hit the ball out to any part of the park. Up now for Washington, Nathaniel Lo. That’s in there. And that is strike one. It’s 0 and one. Swings and misses at the pitch off the plate. That pitch started in ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. out towards right center. That’s well struck and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases into second and he’s got a double. Now batting third baseman Brady House man in scoring position with two away. Brady House digging in for the Nationals. He swings and fouls one off. Grounds one to Short. Short zips it across. That’ll end the inning after a lot of scoring. So in the end, 10 come to the plate, six of them come around to score. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Nationals 11 and the Astros 2. Back here at Dyken Park ready for the bottom of the eighth and stepping in for the Astros, Jose Altuve. Highf fly ball shallow right field. Lyle drifts towards it and a quick out number one. Now batting left fielder Victor and next to hit for Houston. Victor Keratini one for three. First pitch and he just misses. Movement in the bullpen. Mike Soka looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Parker warming up as well. Ground ball to the right side and he takes it himself for the out. Now batting first baseman Christian Walker. So here’s the Astros cleanup hitter. Christian Walker struck out on just three pitches last time. And first offering is fouled off. Two outs. Fast ball is outside. One and one. That one ripped left field and it hits the fence around first. Digging for two. Throws to second and he’s safe. It’s a wall ball double. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. So, two down. Yiner Diaz up next for the Astros. Foul ball. And now the count is even on the ground of first. Low. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. This one pretty well decided at this point. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Nationals 11 and the Astros two. We go to the ninth. Now it’s the right fielder Dalen Lyall. Ochre back to work. Just missed. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Ryan Gusto, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Brown also throwing that chops in for a strike. Next pitch is outside ball. slashes this one and it could be trouble. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he’s got a leadoff double. Putting some good swings on the ball. That’s his second extra base hit in this one. Pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap. And I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bottle. So many positives that led to that knock. So man aboard and here’s the catcher Riley Adams. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the top of the ninth. Swing and a miss. And that is strike two. 0 and two. And he dodges that fast ball. No outs. Runner on second. Fly ball to right. Smith hauls it in for the out. Now batting center fielder Jacob Young. Here’s the center fielder Jacob Young. swing and he breaks his bag. Walker makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting shortstop CJ Abrams. And now up for Washington CJ Abrams. A chance for more damage right here. Couple of RBI’s for him in his last AB. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Lyle on it second with two down. Just missed. Ground ball up the middle. Now the throw to first on the run. Got him. Nice play. Nationals leave one and it remains an 11-2 ball game. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the bottom of the ninth. And now the DH John Singleton and first offering is fouled off. And that one pulled foul. Pitch in the dirt and the count is one and two. Swing and a miss for the strike out. Went back to the fast ball and it was effective. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. But with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So very difficult to get the barrel on. Astros down to their last out. Chaz McCormick up next for the Astros. Pop foul out of play off to the right. That one ripped but fouled. Two down, nobody on. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Outside low and a count one and two. The Astros down to their final strike. Swing and a ground ball base hit right field. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Good two strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. And now Zack Short. That one missed. And that’s through there for a strike. And a count one and one. Hammers that one deep left field and forget it. He sends a rocket to left. It’s 114. That one just sounded different and it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swing from the boot. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Number 61 won’t go any further. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. Now for the Nationals, Mike Sroa. Compared to Sundays, this is a pretty low leverage appearance for him. So he should be fairly free and easy out there. Still have to keep yourself sharp and attack the strike zone. So two away with nobody on. Cam Smith up next for the Astros. That misses the zone. Ball one. That one pushed foul. And now the count one and two after the swing and the miss. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t that one down the line and it goes just foul. Base is empty. Two away, but two runs are in here in the last half of inning number nine. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Yeah, pretty tight ball game up until the eighth inning. And that’s really the time where you expect things to lock down, but the offense broke out. Incredible outburst and just put this game out of reach. Final score in this one, 11 to four for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show. I’m John Shami.
