As the deadline looms near, I hope we have not seen the last of Bailey Falter in Pittsburgh. Bring him back in 2026.

  1. I doubt we’re getting rid of him. Probably trade Pham, Keller, Bednar, Santana, IKF, Ferguson, and Heaney. Maybe KeBryan, too, but I doubt it.

  2. If you can get someone to overpay for Falter you absolutely have to move him. I’m impressed with the results, but him continuing to pitch effectively with a 4.73 FIP and a .245 babip are signs that he’s been lucky this season.

  3. Strictly speaking, they don’t have to trade anyone if they don’t want to. Well, other than if they are truly overwhelmed by a ridiculous overpay offer, in which case you have to at least listen to that, right?

But what I’m getting at is that most of this roster is not being paid a great deal by Major League baseball’s lunatic standards. Other than hayes, reynolds, and keller, there’s nobody on this team at the moment who is even paid particularly well, relatively speaking. So the usual chant that Bob Nutting just wants to trade guys to get their salaries off the books really doesn’t apply right now, I don’t think. Obviously he has done that plenty of times before, and he’ll do it plenty of times in the future. I’m just saying that right this moment, that is not the primary motive for making any deals other than, perhaps, with Hayes. And an argument could be made that even with him, you’re still getting enough value because of his defense. I don’t necessarily buy that argument myself, I’m just saying I know why people make it.

On the other hand that leaves only the players that are on expiring contracts for trade bait, unless Cherington wants to start emptying the farm system. I could see perhaps one of our better pitching prospects being traded as part of a package if it landed a good Major League hitter in return. So just to throw something out there, maybe something like Harrington along with Ferguson and ikf to the Yankees for one of their semi starters who wants to play every day instead of being a part-timer on a strong team. Again that’s just spitballing off the top of my head but you get the point.

It’s difficult to see what direction they should go in right now. A case could be made for just unloading the guys who are not going to be here next year anyway, but without another player or two to sweeten the deal it’s unlikely that those rentals would pry anyone loose in return who would be able to take the field more or less every day while being an upgrade to the present roster. So unless they plan to spend big in free agency this winter, and or make a much larger trade in the off-season, it would seem that the only way to land some position players who will upgrade the hitting is with a significant trade at the deadline.

  4. Hell yeah. One of the few trades that worked out. I can see him having a long career as a Moyer type. You can’t teach arm extension like that

  5. Why do you hate Bailey Falter??? Let him go somewhere he can be paid and even win. Or at least be on a team that will finish above .500.

  6. I don’t hear his name in any rumors so I don’t think he’s even on the table.

  7. Falter and Pham are perfect examples of what it means to be a professional. They both were huge targets of fan scorn. Falter getting booed at the opener last year and everything Pham related until about a month ago. And they both still performed and improved. I imagine that’s not an easy environment to succeed in.
