Expectations for the Miami Marlins at the MLB trade deadline – why they won’t be buyers

The Miami Marlins. We are three days removed from the MLB trade deadline. It’s July 31st at 6 p.m. The Marlins won another series this weekend. And here we are in a position where the Miami Marlins potentially could be buyers. Appell, you’re shaking your head. Am I Am I totally reading this situation? No, they’re not going to be buyers. All right. Well, you don’t you don’t have to shake your head in such disgust. Well, I didn’t want to I didn’t want to interrupt you. It’s not like I’m saying something I’m not I don’t think I’m saying anything outlandish. I’m not saying the Marlins are going to trade their uh you know, some of their their best young talent in the form. If you listen if you listen to some media members or one for media member in this market, the Marlins should trade their top prospect for a 35-year-old third baseman who’s not going to sign here after this year. But but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Marlins were to make like like lateral moves to try to bolster their roster and make a push at it without without compromising the prospects that they have in their form system right now. They’re top prospects. So right now they’re six games out of the third wildard spot which is held by the Padres’s right now. The Marlins just won a series on the road at Milwaukee. The Brewers are the best team in baseball or one of I think the the Cubs might have jumped them again over the weekend because yeah, they did. They’re tied with the Cubs uh for the best record in baseball right now. Toronto as well. Uh that’s a pretty impressive series win for the Marlins. They have been one of the best teams in baseball over the last 35 40 games. And I don’t think anybody expected them to be in a spot where they’re having this conversation, right? because we all thought that they were going to be sellers regardless. And I still think that, but I think this might be a softer sell than uh what we maybe thought previously. I think if you go back and look at what the Detroit Tigers did last year at the trade deadline where they were kind of in a similar spot, really young team that nobody really thought would be in contention. They were in contention, but they had some veteran assets like Jack Flity was a starting pitcher they ended up trading away. They still ended up making the postseason and they’re one of the best teams in baseball. this year again. So, I could see the Marlins, you know, if they trade Edward Cabrera or if they trade Sandy Alcantra, they’re not going to get I mean, maybe one of the pieces will be an 18, 19 year old that’s not going to be able to help for four years, but you would expect to get back a prospect, a top prospect or two that are at the higher levels of minor league baseball who are knocking on the door of the majors who could probably step in right now. It’s trading a guy like Jesus Sanchez, who probably is not going to be here for that much longer after this year, who’s kind of holding up a spot from somebody else. You kind of know what Jesus Sanchez is at this point. It’s trading a guy like Anthony Bender in the bullpen. Guys that, you know, you can get something back for, but it’s not going to blow up the entire project. Um, I think it’s going to be a soft sell. And you know, when you talk about guys like Saniel Contour and Edward Cabrera, given that those are the two best starting pitchers in a sellers market right now, they just had Kansas City Royals just resigned uh one of their pitchers yesterday who was a hot name at the deadline. The Marlins are going to be able to get significant value back for uh a couple of these guys that they decide to trade. my prediction. I don’t know if you care to to to hear it, but I think they actually end up holding on to Sandy and trading Edward Cabrera. I think that’s the two biggest names they have. And I think that’s what ends up happening. And and one thing I watched the game I was in Orlando this weekend for AA tournament, so all I had was TVs around me. Bender’s little delivery. He has his right leg doesn’t bend. It’s a weird thing. His name’s Bender and his right leg stays straight the whole game. But wouldn’t it be But Josh, I want your opinion because I don’t know that much about damn football. Wouldn’t it be smart to trade Sandy? Because we found out last week he makes 17 million, the next guy makes four million, right? Well, that’s part of the equation for why I think they might hang on to him because there are grievance uh that opens that up opens the door to uh the PA filing a grievance again against them uh for their payroll, right? So, you’re trading basically away half of half of your already uh league low by a lot payroll this year. Now, it’s different if you go ahead and invest that money again and say an extension for Kyle Sters or an extension for Augustine Ramirez or Yuri Perez in the offseason or even before that, then they can get around it that way. But, you know, there’s been a lot of reports that Sandy’s already got his bags packed uh cuz they’re on the road right now and the deadline will be before they get back home. Maybe they do still end up trading him, but I I think that, you know, given that he takes up a significant portion of their payroll right now, I think that actually lends itself to him sticking around maybe until the next trade deadline or the off seasonason. I don’t know. I’m I I came on here and I said there’s no chance that the Panthers are going to be able to resign Marshand, Bennett, and Eklad, and they ended up doing it. So, take my prediction of Sandy Stang and Edward going with a grain of salt. All right, we’ll do. Thanks for the uh for the head. Well, oh, Bill Zitto can do something special. I don’t know if the Marlins can do anything special. I mean, Peter Bendix is very close to earning the the Weer Wendix uh moniker. I’ll tell you what, if he pulls off another deadline like he did last year, he might just be getting into Weer Wendix territory. I love it. Appel for For whatever reason, before the season started, I came on these airwaves. I told Hawk and Crowder, I told him, I like this Bendix guy. I don’t know why. I think he’s a nerd, but that’s what makes me like him. Like, I feel like he understands the assignment. You’re not gonna have a big payroll. You’re not going to be able to go out and sign free agents and and pay them stupid amount of money like some of the top clubs do. You’re going to have to win within the margins. You’re going to have to develop talent. And I I just felt I don’t know why I I’m not I’m not a baseball guy, you know that. It just felt like this was this was the right guy to put in charge because he’s coming from a system that has done it successfully in Tampa Bay for a long time. And man, did I hitch my wagon to the right horse very early on here because this Peter Bendex is approaching Weer Wendex territory, baby. I love it. Let’s go. Let’s go. I mean I mean look, you can already start to see it that the the the Jazz Chism trait. They got Augustine Ramirez back and Augustine’s uh one of the leaders for rookie of the year. Kyle Sters has put together. He’s not going to win it obviously, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up somewhere in the top in the five to 10 range in MVP voting if he keeps this up. I mean, he’s hitting close to 300 with an OPS that’s almost 950 right now. He’s been unbelievable for the Marlins this year. He hit what, 11, 12 home runs in the month of July. You’re already seeing some of these pieces that he has brought in. Ronnie Henriquez, who’s become one of their back end of the bullpen guys out of nowhere, has been phenomenal. Jansen Junk, nobody knew who that was, and he’s been a solid guy in their rotation. There are pieces here that again, you guys in spring training, the whole MVIS phenomenon was born out of I don’t know who any of these people are. And Matt Mvvis has a funny sounding name and here they are like before a baseball season starts. Okay, here come the Marlins. It’s the end of March. It’s early April. We got nothing else going on. The Panthers are going to be done by, you know, mid June like they have been the last three years. What do you want from the Marlins? You want the Marlins to get you to football season. And the Marlins are getting you to football season again, right? They are kind of in the thick of it, but they are way better, way, way better than anybody ever expected them to be this year. And I think that Weer Wendix has certainly uh garnered himself uh some I don’t know if leeway is the right word uh but certainly has earned himself some Yeah. And let’s be honest, I don’t know if you know um MVIS goes to the synagogue and not church. So that’s why I think what really? Yeah. Huh. Why would that be a connection for this show? Cuz everybody’s Jewish on the show but me. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And Jimmy. They did. Jumbo Shrimp won again. Yeah. And Matt Mvvis hit another ding-dong. He also stole base. But they play I saw that clip. The Jumbo Shrimp’s fields are 120. He poked He didn’t even swing through He bunned a home run. Josh, I watched the clip yesterday. Y’all sent it. You know, if I didn’t know any better and I’m I’m in for Hawk this week. If I didn’t know any better, I feel like you’re on the take with the Marlins and you are contributing to the shadow banning of Matt Murvvis by trying to downplay the incredible run he’s on with the jumbo shrimp. Boy, bunted a home run. Hey, he smashed a home run 700 feet out of the ballpark and nobody wants to talk about it. And the pitcher was 56. He was in the eighth grade.

Ahead of the MLB trade deadline, Josh Appel explains why the Miami Marlins likely won’t be buyers despite hanging around the wild card race.
