MLB LIVE🔴 Detroit Tigers vs Arizona Diamondbacks – Jul 30, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
Hello and welcome. Thanks for joining us. Inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Detroit Tigers. And now, first pitch coming your way next. Detroit Tigers just about ready to go. And on the hill in this one, Trick Scoo singing. He’s been outstanding and should be fun to watch. Well, when you have a guy that can limit the opponent to very little run production, you have a great chance to win a ball game when he takes them out. He’s just having an outstanding season so far. You hope he can maintain it because if he can, he’ll be in a nice conversation at the end of the year. Now it’s the veteran outfielder Catel Marte. And that misses. And away we go this afternoon. Just missed. Next offering is fouled back. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. [Applause] Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Next offering misses and it’s a full count out towards left center. Verling under it. One away. Time to take a look at the Diamondbacks lineup. Of course, one of the best players in the game today, Catel Marte. Boogie swinging the bat really well. Nine home runs last month. I’m sure he was itching to try to get to 10. So, take that as motivation coming into this new month. They better deal with him very carefully. This is Corbin Carroll. Good power, not great in the OBP department. And first off is fouled off. Fast ball is outside. One out. Base is empty. Nope. That’s inside. That one fouled off. Two and two. One down. Base is empty. Struck him out looking. Wow, that’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. screen, not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to, at least for now, allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit him if they can. And it’s Lordis Goreel Jr. Swing and oh, the bat went flying there. Oh, and one. Two outs. Base is empty. [Music] [Applause] And down on strikes he goes. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Diamondbacks down quickly. And now the Tigers get their first opportunity. No score. You’re dialed into the show. [Applause] Back here with my pal Singi, today’s starting pitcher, Mel Kelly. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point. Maybe it’s the motion. But just some way, somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Bounding ball here. Rolls foul. A one down and that’s in the dirt. Next offering is in for a strike. See if you can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. [Applause] Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and it falls. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Well, that’s one of those knocks where you almost expect to get some jabs from your teammates when you get back to the dugout. You’ll take those bloop hits off the end of the bat all day long. It doesn’t mean you put a great swing on it, but hitters deserve to get a lucky hit every now and then. Here’s Riley Green a bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. One’s the count. Let’s go. sliced hard but foul. Torres gets his lead at first. Nobody out. [Music] Got him. And one out. Now he’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly out of Spencer Torqulson the next to hit. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. back there and gone. So he goes the opposite way with that one. His 24th home run of the season and they grab the lead. It’s two nothing. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat move. Aggressive and it paid off. [Applause] That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that. And probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. Colt K in the box now. No balls in a strike. [Applause] just missed. [Applause] And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s one and two. Still only one out here in the inning. And that one is in the dirt. And the count is even. Two and two. Fouls that off to the left. And we’ll do it again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Well, that’s a blue zone right there or the cold zone on the hitting chart. just doesn’t have much success in that part of the strike zone. And a really good job of the pitcher executing. Try to go there as often as you can. The numbers are in your favor. Matt Verling stands in now and watches strike one. [Applause] Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. has room and he makes the catch, but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now a two nothing ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And we’re back. New getting started. Suarez up to now. Well, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip and the matchup is very favorable. Scoo back to work. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Boo, he never moved cuz he never had time to, but that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. And a foul ball comes up empty. That’s strike two. One ball, two just misses with that one. He missed the zone, but I don’t think he missed his spot. That was a good pitch with two strikes. Fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. just indecisive in that at bat. He couldn’t commit to the slider. Tried to sit in between. Just not able to put the bat on the ball. [Applause] Randall Gretchic now and first offering is fouled off. right through there for a strike. Looks like a really good fast ball today. You can hear that catcher mitt popping. Looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one. Ball one there. One ball, two strikes the count. That’s off the inside corner. Ball two. Spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another out to short. Bayz fires over to first. Two up, two down. Batting sixth, first baseman, Tristan English. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Tristan English trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues. Fast for a strike. And that’s hammered into right field. That’s a base hit. And that keeps the inning going. Here is James McCann. And McCann fouls it off. [Music] McCann fouls one off. Look out. That ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the lines just now. That’s strike three and the third out. So, we take a break. One left for Arizona and they’re down two nothing. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now, it’s the right fielder Wel Perez. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. That’s a ball. Two balls, two strikes on the ground to third. Suarez throw to first in time. That’s one out in the bottom of the second. Batting seven, short stop, Javier Bayz. Jav Bayz digs in right side. Definitely scuffling at the dish lately under the Mendoza line so far this month. [Music] Jav Bayz like fellow Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor born in Puerto Rico but was drafted in the first round out of high school in Florida. That one close rule the ball and the count is 2 and 0. Just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced but it looks like he’s accepted it. Tigers. That one a little bit high. And that’s ball three. [Applause] And there’s the automatic. And a foul ball. slides, but he can’t come up with it. [Applause] Batting eight, third base, one gone, runner at first. Zack McKinstry will hit next. [Applause] Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. 0 and one. And that is downstairs. And that’s ball one. Patrick Johnson calling the balls in strikes. Pretty standard zone for Johnson. Sometimes he might get a little jumpy, a little excited and expand the zone, but usually you at least feel like the pitcher on the mound is earning it. And that’s important because you got to make players earn it. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Chris, do players ever change their approach in meaningful ways based on who’s umpiring or is it good to just be aware of tendencies so you’re not that surprised? I’d say the latter because pitcher’s got to pitch to his strengths regardless. The hitter’s got to hit to his strength. So, you’re aware of it, but you have to just hunt for what you can handle. Good late cut for the strike out there. That thing really got in on him. And you know, the cutter isn’t really a huge swinging miss pitch most of the time because it’s not really meant to move a whole lot. You’re just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact. But that one right there did a whole lot more than that. That was a really good pitch. And now Jake Rogers just missed. Two balls, no strikes to count. Bayz off of first with two away. Just missed. That’s in there. And the count is three and one. Tigers. That one fouled off. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. cut on and missed and it’s a strikeout and that is the inning. One hit, one left. We play two full. It’s the Tigers two and the Diamondbacks nothing. All set for the start of the inning. Digging in Blaze Alexander. Alexander. These two offenses can put up runs in a hurry. Fought off foul. Pitch misses and a count even. One and one. And that skips in the dirt. Swing and a miss. Two and two way high. [Applause] Swing at a hard hit liner up the middle and a base hit. had a good start to the inning. Everything came together for him. Got a fast ball, middle of the plate, jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Heraldo Peromo in there for strike one. The shorts stop takes a ball. I got a ball. One strike. [Applause] Ground ball up the middle. A sliding play at short. There’s one to first n in time. Great effort there. Well, an aggressive slide at second base, but it was legal. I like it because you’re trying to break up the double play and it looked like the slide impacted the throw a little bit. Nice job by the base runner. So, the batting order turns over. Here’s Catel Marte 0 for one with a fly out to center. That one finds the zone. Strike one. And he takes the strike. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. Didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. And down on strikes now. Five strikeouts for him on the M. Oh, that was a pretty poor at bat. He just never got the bat off of his shoulder. I mean, you got to go up there looking to swing at some point, especially once you’re down 02. And at that point, make an adjustment. Look to put the ball in play if it’s anywhere close. And I’m just not sure what the plan was there. And next is the Diamondbacks DH, Corbin Carroll. He was a strikeout victim his first time. swing and a miss as he was out front. Carol batting second in today’s lineup and he’s usually in the outfield. Today he’s the DH. [Applause] This one in the air center field. Beerland settles underneath it and that’ll do it. One left for the Diamondbacks. They trail things here two nothing. Back at Kame Park. Now it’s the DH Glabber Torres. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. Swing and a miss. There’s the slider and one. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Next offering is in for a strike. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. You know, varying speeds can be just as useful for a pitcher as movement. As you see right there, it really wasn’t a great location, but the fact that the velocity change had the hitter off balance, and that’s all you got to do sometimes. Green in the box with one away as he takes ball one. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. Just missed. Yeah. And I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left [Music] on the ground right side and it goes just foul. Though Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Throws to first in time. That was a strong at bat even though he couldn’t find a way on base. First baseman Spitzer Torqulson. Two outs. Base is empty. And here’s the first baseman Spencer Torqulson. He’s already homerred in this game. Tigers. First pitch and he just misses. [Music] swinging a drive deep right field. That’s back and that one is out of here. Another homer, his second home run of the game. And they add a run. It’s 3 nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. That was one of those home runs where you really don’t know if he got enough of it off the bat. I mean, he put a good swing on it clearly, but I wouldn’t say he really got the sweet spot on the bat. The exit velo impressive, but it had all it needed for him to circle the pillows. And now here is Colt Keith. Swings and misses. And it’s 0 and one. One’s the count. [Applause] And that one is inside. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the last half of the third. So a foul ball makes it one and two. [Applause] Battling here as he fouls it away. [Applause] Next offering is downstairs. stays alive. The change up missing ball three. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity and a foul ball. He stays alive. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Five foul balls in this at bat so far. And these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch. even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. Yeah, there’s ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a wall. It’s been a little bit of a shaky inning, but he’s still in a good spot to get out of this thing without giving up any more runs. He’s just got to turn the page and go after this next guy. [Applause] Verland got it for the second time and that’s strike one. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. That misses the zone. One and one. [Applause] And that’s in for a strike. Now a highf fly ball out to left center. Guriel makes the grab and the inning is over. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s now 3 nothing. Major League Baseball is on the show. Start of the fourth. Now the left fielder Goreel Jr. Gel Jr. at 96. That pitch is in for a strike ball. That one down the line and foul ball. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, want to stay up the middle that way if you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field, not right in the dirt and it’s three and two. Now in this three ball count down in the ball game, you’ve got to be very selective. Take your walk if they’ll give it to you on the ground to first. Oh, great stop to first. Nicely done for the hour. Makes a great decision to go ahead and dive to stop that ball. Nice little flip to the pitcher covering. Those are those PFPs, pitchers fielding plays. [Applause] Aueno Suarez up to the plate now. He struck out swinging at his first at that one upstairs. The Tigers leading by three. Top half of inning number four. Next offering upstairs. Well, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. And it finds its way through for a hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. man at first and now Randall Gritic. He’s 0 for one and first offering is fouled off and that is out of play man at first one away. And ring him off, says Patrick Johnson. That’s a strike out. Next to hit for Arizona, Tristan English, one for one with a single so far. And that’s downstairs. And that’s ball one. That one missed and there’s a ball. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. And ball four to a board. That just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guys the play was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone. James McCann in now. Struck out swinging his first time and McCann fouls it off. Two outs. [Applause] And ball one. fights it off. He’ll see another strike him out. Swings and misses. Picks up strikeout number seven. So they strand a pair on now to the bottom of the fourth. It’s the Tigers three. The Diamondbacks nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the inning. And now the right fielder Wel Perez. And that one is in for a strike. Well, these Tigers showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and that’s six Ks for him in this one. Well, that at bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strike out. You got to be better at the plate right there at least to bounce something off. Extend that at bat. Here’s Bayz, a single his first time. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. In there for a strike at the top of the zone, just off the outside edge. And now it’s even one and one. [Music] [Music] And that’s in the dirt. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Count is three and two. Ripped to right face in. So a man aboard now with one away. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. So digging in, Zack McKinstry struck out swinging his first time and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Bayz leads off first with one away. Nope. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Jake Woodford up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Dclani also getting ready. Falling behind. Two and one. The pitch swing and a miss. Two balls, two strikes. Kelly moved to first. Bayz back in safely. Let’s do it. Tigers popped up. Suarez should have this one. Pulls it down and there’s two gone. Now batting the catcher Jake Rogers. Jake Rogers up now for the Tigers. He’s 0 for one. up the middle. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Tory Lavell is out of the dugout and he’s going to make a move here. Merryill Kelly will depart. It’s a three-run game, and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Now, pitching for number 43 gets handed the rock out of the pen. Don’t expect to see a whole lot of swings and misses, but he’s going to compete out there on the mound. Glabber Torres up to the plate. Singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two and takes low from ball one. First and second, two down. Come on, Tigers. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. [Music] That misses the zone. Two and one. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. And a strike to Glaver. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. On the ground right side, slings to first and Glaver Torres retired. And that is the inning. Tigers strand a pair, but they lead it three nothing. Back here in Detroit now it’s the second base Alexander. Alexander Scooble back to work. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. You know, these Dbacks need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings. They’re trying to find ways to drive the ball with some authority, but it’s just not happening for him so far. Zero extra base hits in the game. So, it’s been tough for him to get anything going. Right side, handles, throws to first one away here in the fifth. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Heraldo Purdomo digs in now. 0 for one. He hit into a fielder’s choice his first time. Just missed. Sometimes you have to keep chipping away until you break through. But it’s a lot easier to put runs on the board when you have runners in scoring position because they put themselves there. McKinstre makes the catch for the out. Well, that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there. I mean, that pitch was right down the middle. I think he got a little too excited. Came out of his mechanics and instead of driving that ball somewhere, he popped it up. Unfortunate for him. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Oh, and two swing and a miss and Scooble gets the strike out and the Diamondbacks down in order. They trail in this one three nothing. We head to the bottom of the fifth now. The number two hitter Riley Green. pulls that one foul [Music] and Ellie one. Next offering is outside and that one is lifted in the air. Guriel sizing this one up. pulls it in for the out and there’s one down. Now batting the first baseman, Spencer Tolson up now for the Tigers. So here in the three spot, Chris, a hitter low average but high slug. Well, one thing he’s going to lean on are the metrics. His exit velocity has been really good. He’s just had some bad luck hitting the ball right at people. And that one is inside ball one. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Music] That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Outside low. Two and two. Eighth pitch in the bat coming up. [Music] Hammers that one deep left field and forget it. And he’s gone yard again. That’s his third home run of the game. And they add to the lead. It’s 4 nothing. Singy. ball is jumping off his bat. Yes, it is. Tons of loud contact, man. It’s been impressive. He’s putting on quite the show with the dish here in this one. And he’s just so locked in with his swing and he’s just not missing right now. A three homer game, man. It’s so special. And I tell you what, it’s a lot of fun watching him pull it off as well. Base is empty, one away. And next to hit for Detroit, Colt Keith on the ground to short. Purdomo fires to first in time. Now batting center fielder Matt Verling. Two down, base is empty. And next up for the Tigers, Matt Verling. [Applause] And first offering is fouled off. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. [Applause] Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Up next for the Tigers. Now it’s the switchhitting outfielder Perez. Pirates for two in this one [Applause] in the dirt but kept close. The runner at first with two gone. There’s the strike. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. That’s outside. And that’s ball two. [Applause] Oh, that’s low. So now two on and two outs. Not what he wanted to do right there, Boo. That keeps this inning alive. Puts a runner in the scoring position and a chance for this offense to add on to their lead. So here’s Bayz now. He’s two for two. Sing, you talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that is ball one. [Applause] That one misses. That’s five straight. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. Marte makes the catch and that ends the inning. Tigers add one to the lead on this homer. It’s now a four nothing ball game. back after this on the show. All set for the top of the six. And now Corbin Carroll. Corbin Carroll. Well, a big lead like this is comfortable many times, but not when these two teams are matching up. You got to continue to keep your head down, play catch with that catcher, and just try to move through this lineup. Swing and a miss. Strike one. And it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today. Good fast ball, excellent slider, but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there. [Applause] One, two now. Ah, that hit him. And the lead off man is aboard to start the inning. Here’s Guriel to split numbers between June and July. There fall one. Guriel. 31 years old and he was born in Cuba. Now snap throw to first. Carol back on a dive. Runner at first with no outs here. Fast ball is outside. That’s ball three. Guriel gets a piece. [Music] Caught him looking for the K. I’m not saying it it wasn’t a strike or you know it was a ball whatever but just the location with that velocity it’s hard enough just even if the velocity is not great but that velocity that location tip your capu Suarez getting ready to hit one for two first pitch misses. is the Diamondbacks down by four and we’re the top half of the sixth. That’s in there. Strike one. [Applause] Bottom of the zone and a cold strike. has been able to go inside as well as outside. Effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat. Scoo keeping him close. Strike three and that’s two in a row. You’re usually going to see that inside fast a little longer coming in from the opposite side, but that pitch really got in on him right there. I mean, that’s a wellthrown pitch. Tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and the sweet spot of the bat to the baseball. Gritic in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. [Applause] fouled off and they’ll do it again. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Make it six shut out innings for him out there now. Tigers four and the Diamondbacks nothing. [Applause] And we’re back. John Shambi with Chris Singleton in the booth. And leading off the bottom of the sixth, Zack McKinstry. Let’s go Tigers. That misses the zone. Ball one. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Number 43 up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Curtis also throwing [Applause] out there to center. Marte hustling after it. Got it. really had to move for that grab. And there’s one away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Tigers. Rogers in the box again. Takes a strike. One’s the count. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the sixth. Not close with that one. And that’s ball one. [Applause] Well struck right field. Going back. Makes the catch up against the wall. Now batting designated hitter Glabber back to the top of the Detroit order. Here’s Glabber Torres one for three. Chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Ball one, no strikes. Bull. That’s just out [Music] [Applause] on the ground and he punches one right back up the middle. That’s what he does. Great contact. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Now batting. Here’s the left fielder. Rally Green 0 for three in this one. [Applause] Ripped to right. He’s there. He’s got it. And that’ll do it. One left for Detroit, but they’re in front. Four nothing. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Reese Olsen. And he’s got a nice lead to work with. So he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. Reese Olsson. And now the first base, Tristan English. First base. The Dback in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Activity in the bullpen for Detroit. Troy Melton getting loose for AJ Hinch. That’s off the mark now. One and two. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. I don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Verling on the move to the alley, puts it away for the out. [Applause] Now batting catcher James McC. So next, James McCann, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. There’s the strike. And that drops in for a strike. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. Swing and a miss. Struck him out of the slider and there’s two gone. Nice. Doubled up with the slider for that punch out. the one before just caught the zone. So, as a hitter, you have to protect right there. Great pitch to just expand a little bit more. He got that chase he was looking for. That right there is good pitching. Alexander stands in now and watches strike one. That’s towards center and makes the play. And that’s out number three. [Applause] leading off. And here’s the first baseman, Spencer Torqulson. And a chance to make some history here, Chris. Yeah, he’s homerred three times so far. And now he gets another chance. At least we think. We’ll see if the pitcher gives him anything to hit. It’s so rare to see a three homer performance, but even more special for that player to get another chance at the plate to do it again for four. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. That’s ball too. in for a strike. Went with the sweeper. He must have been looking for something else cuz he gave up on that pitch a little early. It was right down Main Street. Probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this at bat. Line drive. Makes the grab. One away. Now batting second baseman, Colt Keith. Colt Keith the next to hit. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. [Music] And he hits a ground ball right side, tosses to first. And a couple of quick outs. Now batting center fielder Matt. Two outs. Space is empty. Matt Verling up now for the Tigers. Tigers. Close but called the ball and it’s one and0. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. That one the other way. Fair ball around first and hustling for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. Now Wel Perez and that’s outside. [Music] And that misses. And that’s ball two. Tigers. That one ripped and foul ball. Man at second. Swing and a ground ball. And that one gets through into center field. They extend their lead as the runner scores from second. It’s an RBI single. It’s 5 nothing. The batter now, Javier Bayz. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. Perez leads off first with two down to the inning. [Applause] Next offering popped in the air right field drops into the glove and that will end the inning. But they pick up one run on the RBI single and the lead is now 5 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show and welcome back to the ballpark and now Olsen back to work and that one is in for a strike at 95. It’s 0 and one. Popped up. Keith nabs it and there’s one down [Applause] now batting center fielder Katel. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte Singi. He’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Well, just look at the back of my bubblegum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite. One down, base is empty. And they’ll do it again. [Music] This one lifted in the air left field. That one gets down for a hit. He’s in at second with a one out double. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. There are a lot of nicknames people have attached to hits like that. Blooper, flare, ducks, snort, lawn dart, etc. But whatever you want to call it, it’s a knock. And those are the ones that’ll make you smile as a hitter just about every time. Corbin Carroll stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Just missed. One out and a runner at second. Come on. Oh, that plumped him. And that’s now twice he’s been hitting this one. Two on, one out. Lordis Goreel Jr. stands in now for the Diamondbacks. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. First pitch, not close. Tigers bullpen with some action. Troy Melton, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Vest warming up as well. Swings through that one for strike one. One out. Runners at first and second. That’s in there. And that’s strike two. All sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. Down on strikes looking for the second straight plate appearance. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. So, first and second with two outs. Now, here is Au Heno Suarez. And that one clips the corner. [Music] Come on, Tiger. swing and a miss and that’s strike two. Well, this is a higher leverage spot and I love the way that he’s turned things around. He’s got two outs now ahead in this count and he can pretty much dictate what’s going to happen next in terms of the pitch sequence. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Marte around third. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single. It’s 5-1. picks himself up an RBI. Just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there was just no one there to knock it down. And here comes the Tigers manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Reese Olsen gives way. And the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching. Tommy Kanley on a pitch out of the pen here coming on to face a righty here and he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Now it’s the right fielder Randall Gritic [Applause] in there at the knees. That’s strike one. Traffic on the bases with one already in and we’re in the top of the eighth. Missed with a change up and the count is one and one. [Applause] Breaking ball misses down and away. It’s a big opportunity right here, but I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. Check. Swing. No appeal. [Applause] And it’s foul away. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And they’re all loaded up. Well, interesting. He went with the off speed and then walk the hitter. Man, you got to challenge the guy with the fast. So, bases all loaded up. Now, up next for Arizona, Tristan English. [Applause] And that’s in for a strike. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. Tying run at the plate. And that is in for a strike. 0 and2. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. That one is absolutely belted. That’s going back some more out of here. And that’s a grand slam. He made him pay for that one. His first homer of the year. And we are starting over. It’s 55. Wow. Down fourth late in the game. Things aren’t looking too good at that point, but they’ve refused to back down. Great bats to load the bases and get that tying run to the plate. And boom. Grand slam and we’re starting over. This should be a great finish. [Music] And here’s the catcher, James McCann. Three strikeouts already. He’s 0 for three. And that drops in for a strike. [Applause] And that’s downed away. Swang and a ball lifted in the air and that’ll fall for a base hit and that extends the inning. Been a pretty rough game at the plate for him so far. a bunch of strike out. So that felt good. I’m sure you know what they say, he couldn’t have thrown it out there any better than that. And certainly the case that time just flared it back behind the second base and dropped it in there. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Tommy Canley out of the game and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching new pitcher for the Tigers, Grant Herder. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. Go ahead run on base. And here is Bla1 Alexander. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Oh, and one. Two gone. The possible go ahead run at first. [Applause] Liner. And this could be trouble. Lead runner makes the turn at second. around third. The relay throw. He’s safe. They’ve got the lead 65. Stringing them together. That’s three hits in a row. Just a great approach. Looked like that was exactly what he wanted to do with that pitch. And right off the bat, he knew he was taking that wide turn at first to head for second. So, runner at second, two down. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Heraldo Peromo, known for his late inning heroics. The shorts stop takes a ball. Man on second. Two down. And there’s a foul ball. Going to count one and two. Alexander stands at second with two just off the outside edge. Two outs. And that’s outside. Catel Marte on deck for Arizona. [Applause] Swings and misses on the fast up in the zone for the strikeout. So a great inning there as they bat around to score six times to open up the lead. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Diamondback six and the Tigers five. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Kendall Grave. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. And close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Leading off for the Tigers run game. Here’s the third base, Zack McKinstry. outside low. One and0 [Applause] looking to get the tying run on base on the ground right side in plenty of time to first. One up, one down. Well, I’m impressed with this guy’s internal clock. He knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step, secure his grip on the baseball, and make a strong, accurate throw. The Tigers go with a pinch hitter, Dylan Dingler. And he would be the tying run boo. So, we may see him try to launch one if he gets a good pitch to handle. [Applause] And that one fouled off. [Applause] [Applause] cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. You know, Boo, you often think of sliders more for that horizontal movement, but most of the good ones have both vertical depth and that horizontal movement. And that’s what we saw right there. A good drop on the break and got him to swing over the top. Here is Glabber Torres. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. Basketball for a strike. 01’s the count. Tigers. Here comes the 01. Good take by Torres. One and one. [Applause] Two down. And that one a little below the knees and it’s two in one. [Applause] Tigers on the ground to first. English. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Down in order go the Tigers. This one remains close. 65 now pitching. Welcome back. And here comes the closer Will. He has a great slider with tons of movement. Catel Marte up to the plate. One for four with a double. Catel Marte [Applause] inside. Just missed vest. A six-foot righty. He features a four seam fast. a slider, a sinker, and he works in a change up. That’s down and in [Applause] another ball. So, definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. That one in there across the letters. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] That one misses. So a lead off walk. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there. Anyhow, now batting. Next is the designated hitter, Corbin Carroll. [Applause] And that’s in for a strike. 0 and one. 0 and one. [Applause] Jack swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Two strike one-run game here in the top of the ninth. Hats and misses. It’s a strike out. really tight bite on that slider and just couldn’t get the barrel to it. How fun. You got to try to pull those hands tight to the body to get it through. And I’m thinking he probably wanted that pitch to end up even more inside to keep it out of the danger zone. But it had enough late break and deception to get the job done. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. 0 for four with three strikeouts and he’s grounded out. in for a strike. One next offering is fouled back. I want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good VLOO. [Applause] fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Ball one there. He goes down looking. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast right there. And I don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. [Applause] Popped up. [Applause] He makes the grab and that is that. So no runs in the inning despite the leadoff walk and that does it. 234 set to hit in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Diamondback six and the Tigers five now pitching for now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Number 27 power slider guy. Boo. He throws it hard and gets a lot of late movement so it’s tough to pick up. Riley Green up now for the Tigers [Applause] on a line base hit and the tying run is on base here in the bottom of the ninth. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. Looks like we’ve got a substitution at first. Entering is the pinch runner, Parker Meadows. No outs. Runner at first. Now it’s going to be Spencer Torqulson. That misses the zone. Ball one. Now, Boo, this is a real tough place for visiting teams to come in and close out ball games for a win. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] One-run game. Bottom nine. On the ground to second, might be two. There’s one. Back to first. And that is a double play. Well, that’s a huge ball in play to get the double play defensively. Just one more guy to get this save for the closer. So, they’re down to their final out. Next to hit, Colt Heath. [Applause] That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. [Applause] Yeah, big swing and a miss. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Nice work out of the bullpen for that first MLB win. Boog. They turned to him when they didn’t have the lead. He kept things steady and he’s rewarded with the W. 65 the final here today for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long. What the move?
