[Rosenthal] Cubs acquiring RHP Michael Soroka from Nationals

  1. Per Rodgers: “News: The Cubs have acquired pitcher Mike Soroka from the Nationals, sources tell ESPN. Soroka, 27, is 3-8 with a 4.87 ERA in 16 starts but the key with him is his expected stats are much better than his actual ones, starting with his xERA which is 3.32. Could be a pen arm too”

  2. Get the minor additions outta the way to navigate the big ones tomorrow…

That’s what I’m telling myself at least and will keep repeating it all afternoon.

  3. Certified Hawkins move, probably sees something in em

    I wouldn’t assume much in terms of a loss. He’s on a 1 year

  4. Soroka numbers aren’t that great but he has a terrible nationals defense behind him. 2nd half with our defense, I guarantee this is going to be one of the sneaky good moves from the deadline.

  5. My only criticism here is that it’s yet another pitcher who hasn’t thrown 100 innings anytime recently. The staff has a lot of pitchers who don’t have longevity in their recent pasts, like Boyd (like Soroka, last threw 100 innings in 2019), Horton (already thrown more pitches than any year as a pro or in college), Rea (150 innings once), and Brown (100 innings once).

Soroka’s held up fine so far, and his peripherals are pretty strong. Love him in the #5 slot, especially if it pads the depth to keep Rea out of the rotation and helps limit Horton’s innings a bit before the playoffs.

9/10 on improving the depth, just need the big move to meaningfully improve the rotation.

  6. Depending on what we gave up, I actually really like this. Soroka has good peripherals, and playing at Wrigley with a bunch of gold glovers behind him help as well. I genuinely think he can be a 3.5 ERA kind of guy down the stretch for us, though we still are wanting for a TOR arm.

  7. Solid start, we need another though.  Let Matt Shaw continue to do his thing at 3rd.  Improve the rotation.

  8. Not inspiring/huge but I’ll reserve judgement until the deadline is over. I’ve wanted them to add multiple arms, and well this is an arm. This a different story if it’s the only arm they add vs one of 4.

His velocity dipping like 3 mph recently is concerning

  9. Good cheap pick up that I hope the Cubs lab will improve into maybe a slightly worse Jamo?

  10. This seems like Assad insurance, more likely to be a long man if Assad comes back to form. I suppose to a certain degree Taillon too but Soroka or Assad can be 5th or 6th starters or long relief. I’d still expect a bigger move to get done. Hopefully more

  11. I like it. A classic Hoyer move- Diamond in the rough attempt. Now we need to see more commited moves. What ya got Hoyer ?!

  12. I’m a casual fan. Do people who comment here about how it’s so bad really know anything about these trades and their value?

  13. I simply do not understand it. The Mets give up their 8th and 14th rated prospects and get one of the best closers in baseball. The Cubs give up their 13th and 14th and get a injury prone starter who has already been on the injury list once this season.

  14. His numbers should improve in front of our defense. That being said, a chucky doll would be better than Ben Brown right now.

  15. This better not be the rotation piece we are missing. 3-18 In the last two seasons. Good fucking grief. He’s a long reliever if I’ve ever seen one
