On today’s episode of Locked on NHL, we take a look at four players who could massively impact their financial status with a big 2025 2026 season. My name is Seth Toel, host of Locked on Wild, joined by JD Young of Locked on Sharks. and JD. We are going to start by diving into a team that we don’t talk a ton about, the Montreal Canadians, the Habs. And one player who is sitting on a very interesting situation himself is the power play merchant from last year, Mr. Patrick L who could massively impact his financial future by having a big year in 2025 2026. All told for the Canadians. He had 20 goals, 13 assists this past season in 52 games. and um he he was a player that was acquired by Montreal after LA just wanted a a fresh start, a new chance somewhere else. Um worked out pretty good uh in year one, but it will be very interesting to see how line A looks now that he’s comfortable with that system, now that he’s familiar with the organization. Yeah, he’s also healthy. That’s kind of a big deal. Um it was a good like it was a good initial honeymoon phase for both player and team and uh it looks like this is one that yeah it it could be one that u that blossoms into something more uh here this season. Yeah, I think for L like he’s a he’s an interesting one to me because right I mean he’s brought in to help you know one as a veteran type of player for a pretty you know relatively young team especially in the forward department. Uh two to help score and that’s what Patrick Lane does. he’s helped score and as you uh said, you know, that power play merchant and right, you you we didn’t really get the full line experience last year because of the injury and a guy who like at first we thought he might be gone for the entire season. Then it was like, you know, maybe he’s back around uh uh like the trade deadline came comes back early and he has his struggles, right? And it just he just doesn’t look like him himself. But I’m really interested to see especially with the Canadians who I mean yes they will have some cap space. So they do have you know a lot of dudes who have some kind of bigger time contracts here. Maybe nothing of the like the massive massive amounts but you know you’re going to have to soon pay Lane Hudson. Uh if Zack Buke has a good season like he’s going to need a new contract. you’re probably going to need to continue to add more pieces to the defense here and that money can all of a sudden, you know, when you think you have a lot of cap space, all of a sudden it’s gone, right? Um, and if he hits the open market, he could be one of the bells of the ball next off seasonason because yes, I knew we do the thing where we look at next year’s free agent class. You’re like, “Oh, McDavid or Capri off or X, Y, and Z.” And then by the time we get to free agents next next year, like 90% of the top guys have been resigned, right? But L feels like that he could be one of those guys next off season. And if he kind of gets back to his one, being healthy, and two, if he puts up 30 points on what I think is going to be a pretty good Canadians team, right, they made the playoffs last year. Their young course continued to get better. You’re going to have year two of of Lane Hudson. you’re gonna have a full season of Ivan Demadov and if Ivan Demodv proves to be the guy that they think he is like you might have some redundancy with Lion and and the Canadians may not want to resign him. So I think it would behoove Patrick L to have as great of a season as you possibly can. Um that way you can go into next off season and try to kind of get that one huge contract uh and for you know to kind of solidify where you’re going to be for the rest of your career. I think he is uh the guy when it comes to like guys who can, you know, older veteran guys who could really set themselves up for a nice off seasonason next year. Yeah, this is going to be very interesting because there there are a few things that are going to factor into this. Number one, if you’re a playoff team and you’re looking to add a piece to your roster that you think puts you over the top, is 55 games of Patrick Line going to do that? because that’s that’s basically what he’s giving you right now. Um yeah, his 82 game average as a player that is still 20 like he’s 26 and he’s been he feels like he’s been in the league for like 20 years though. He’s definitely he’s a very old 26. His 82 game average for a full season is 34 goals, 30 assists. So he when he is healthy, he is able to give you tremendous amounts of scoring. And even if you go back to the 2021 2022 season, uh he had 26 goals in 56 games. But is he that guy? I think what we saw with Montreal this past season is is how he can be effective for a team. 15 of his 20 goals were on the power play this past season. And why do I feel like, I’m not trying to speak this into existence, but why do I feel like this is another Vegas move? He’s just going to slotted right behind Mitch Martyr. I mean, I hope not because I hope not. they have or he’s gonna sign like a really cheap deal to go play with Florida where he’s just gonna yeah put up a bajillion goals and I could see that too. But no, I but I could kind of see him be like next year’s Dick Ellers, right? A guy who, you know, is scored, maybe not gotten, you know, a lot of ice time because of the way that the Jets utilized him, right? But was one of the top guys in this year’s free agent class. uh the Hurricanes paid him a butt ton of money to come down and you expect him to, you know, play a bigger role, but he’s, you know, going to be a guy you’re expecting to put 30 uh, you know, 30 goals on the board this year. I think line A has a much better, yes, the health is always an issue with him and if he’s happy where he’s at, he does seem like he can be a little bit of a moody cat, but he’s a guy who’s I think has a better track record of scoring for you than than what we’ve seen, especially from a guy like Eers. I yeah I just think if if the Canadians continue to be good this year and be a team that’s we expect to be in the playoff mix right maybe they make it maybe they don’t maybe they take a step back but right you have Cole Cfield you have Suzuki you have uh Subkovski like you know all those guys are still really young you have Demov who’s you know already going to be crowned the CER uh champ you know the Colder uh trophy winner this year before they even played uh no adoption coming over like and Lane Hudson in year two. Like this team is going to put up offense. I think this team is going to score. Like I would be surprised if they’re not, you know, at least in the top third when it comes to scoring this year. Uh and I think L is going to be set up where he can let all these young kids run around and he can just be kind of crush one-times and score a bunch of goals this year. And again, uh teams always look for scoring, man. Like that’s Yeah, I totally see himself do it. Yeah, there’s going to be some team out there that’s like, well, if Ovetchkin can do it for Washington, Lina can do it for us. Yeah, it might work for us. It’s a It’s a preposterous. It hasn’t worked for anyone else, but it might work for us. It might work for us. Uh, that’s the Evander Kane situation. That’s the Arrested Development call back that we were all waiting for, by the way. Yes. So, it’ll be interesting. you you brought up if he’s happy where he’s at too and that is something that you know does have to be addressed because yes he’s been traded uh he has played for three teams now he’s been traded twice and um it is something that led to him saying goodbye to Columbus it’s something that kind of flared up in Winnipeg as well so ultimately every player wants to win there are really know players who are like honestly I just want the money. Um everybody wants to win. Skitter would like a word. Well yeah John Clingberg too. John Clingberg didn’t didn’t want to say no to three and a half million from the Toronto Maple Leafs. And I wouldn’t either to be fair. Just get her one year of playing in the playoffs. I’ll go back to playing with some garbage team that’s not making the playoffs. Thank you. Sweet sweet mercy. just give me four and a half, please. But, you know, he L wants to win and so he’s going to go to a a spot that has a chance for him to do that. I would imagine he’s going to want to go somewhere where he is playing with some skill on his same line and he’s going to go want to go somewhere where he has top power play opportunities. I mean, he scored 15 plus power play goals three times in a season, three separate seasons. So if he last year was on he’s on one leg last year when he was doing it too. So yeah. Yeah. So he will definitely if he like if he gives you 60 or more games, 20 or more goals, I I think he’s going to get a I He’ll get a multi-year deal from somebody. Oh, he’ll get a massive contract. Yeah. If he’s got something like that. Yeah. Somebody will talk themselves into it. And especially if all the top players are already signed, somebody will Yeah. Uh, man, I can’t wait for Patrick W. Future Minnesota Wild. So, no, he didn’t want to come here. He said no. So, he’s not uh he’s not our he’s not our I I don’t I don’t concern myself with with the types that are like, nah, I don’t want to come there. Which is why to this day I have never mentioned Phil Castle. Same thing. Uh Cam Fowler. He’ll come off. Capri’s off. He’s Yeah, he’s going to be texting him next off season. Come here. He’s like, “You are the missing piece. Get over here. Missing piece. Get over Faber. Get out of here, Brock Faber. We don’t need you anymore.” Uh, speaking of Brock Faber, he is a defenseman and our next two players that we’re going to discuss are also defenseman. That is about the only thing that they have in common. Uh, we’re going to talk though about Thomas Harley and Brandt Clark as they look to cash in with some bigger opportunities on their respective teams. We’ll discuss all that and more as we continue today’s episode of Lockdown NHL after this. Today’s episode of Lockdown NHL is brought to you by Monarch Money. Moving from Patrick Lane to a couple of defensemen that are looking to cash in with a strong season. Uh JD, let’s start with Brandt Clark uh on the Los Angeles Kings side. Obviously, you look at that uh Kings Decor, you got Drew Dowy, you’ve got Cody Cece, Mikey Anderson, Brian Dumalan. You’re putting them in order of importance, right? Uh clearly. Yeah, very very much so. Um but you look at these guys, too. I mean, Dowy’s 35, CC’s 31, Dumlan’s 33, Joel Edmonson is signed for multiple years. He is 32. And it it just feels like there is going to be some opportunity. Drew Dowy has started to uh to run into the injury bug quite a bit over the last few seasons. Um although to be honest, not a lot of that is his fault. There’s been some pretty bad luck with a couple of those injuries. So I’m not going to hold it too much against him, but he is also 35. So, it just it feels like Brandt Clark is getting to the point that his number is going to be called quite literally. Um, Dowy has one year after 2025 2026 left on his deal. So, at that point, he’ll be 36. And you know, do you do you bring him back to uh to a deal to uh to stay with the team or do you let Clark kind of slide into that spot just as the natural successor? Yeah. And then of course they also traded Jordan Spence to the Ottawa Senators this year, kind of clearing the path for Brandt Clark to kind of be the next guy uh for the Kings, right? and you know the the signings that they made this off seasonason right CC and uh Dumlin not the like sexiest of names and they’re not going to their jobs are not to drive offense and you know like after Dowy it’s it’s Brandt Clark like Brandt Clark is the guy on this this blue line that you’re going to look to to take a bigger role this season um you know former eighth overall pick in the 2021 draft and Clark known for his offense like and you’ve been kind of waiting for him to be able to kind to get the reigns And I think this is the year for him to kind of do it for for the Kings because everything’s just kind of set up perfectly for him. Uh, right. He just doesn’t have the competition anymore. Drew Dowy again, you know, he’s dealt with some injuries, but he’s still Drew Dowy, but like it does feel like it’s it’s Clark’s time to kind of take step up and take a much much bigger role. and then, you know, as he enters the last year of his ELC, uh, could be setting himself up for a pretty solid payday, uh, going forward. I know they’ll have to, you know, make a decision on Kopitar this off season and and Kempe and some other guys here, but like the Kings cap space, like they have plenty of cap space going into next off seasonason. Uh, I I I think that Clark could be one of those next young defenseman who gets paid a a butt ton of money because that’s the smart thing to do is when you have a good player, just pay him early and you don’t run into problems as much. So, uh, I’m a big fan of that and I think Clark is going to be kind of, you know, has been kind of groomed to be the next dude for the Kings and I think this is the year where we finally see it. Speaking of pay them early, Thomas Harley with the Dallas Stars, the next player that we’re going to discuss, uh he is in the final year of his current deal, which is paying him $4 million a season. He’s going to be a restricted free agent uh in the upcoming year. Uh his lowest goal total in the last two seasons was 15. He has just been defense pouring on the points. Yeah. 31 goals the last two years, 96 points in that span as well. He shoots the puck a ton. His defensive numbers are also very good. He has over the last two years a combined 11.1 defensive point shares the just just defense as a uh as a defenseman. And I I’m I’m going to say I’m going to phrase it this way. Not only does Harley have the potential to really cash in and put himself in Heiskin and territory, Dallas needs him to like Yes, they need him. They need him to be that good because the rest of that decor is um I patchwork I don’t think does it justice. It is. You know, like uh when you’re like leaving your dorm and like you you use the toothpaste to fill the holes and stuff. It kind of feels a little bit like that with some of the Yeah. Uh not even the patchwork. Yeah. Uh but no, like I think Harley is a guy who you now here’s a guy doing Chris Collins words. Uh here’s a guy who uh like Yeah. like you said, Dallas needs him to be the guy for and yes, I know you have mirrored in who signed for that, you know, four years including this season, but uh Harley like again another guy where I just don’t think you mess around with it. I know Dallas is really tight to the cap right now. They have a million dollars for the season, but they have everyone signed. they it opens up a little bit that you you look at, you know, you Jason Robertson got to decide what they want to do there, but you have some contracts starting to kind of come off the books. You’re starting to kind of cycle out of some of your aging guys. But I like if Harley like teams, everybody 31 other teams would be calling if Thomas Harley was potentially available because you can’t afford to pay him. Uh yeah, everybody in the NHL will be looking to acquire Thomas Harley because uh he’s good and finding good defenseman who are young like that. Uh it’s one of the toughest things in uh in the NHL. And yes, I know he’s left-handed. So, of course, Mike Greer would be all over him because the Sharks can’t have right-handed defenseman, but uh like you should again pay your young players and just lock them up long term. Uh I expect him to a sign a massive massive contract next season because uh yeah like you said 15 goals a you just pencil in 15 goals a year from your defenseman sign me up. How frustrating is the Tyler Sean no movement clause right now do you think for Dallas? So frustrating. Yeah. That’s 9.85 $85 million that you could really really use. You could really use that money. Uh you wonder if they’re just like that they’re penciling it and that’s the Thomas Harley money, you know, like like GMs they kind of budget like okay when’s this contract like this is going to like that’s just a Thomas Harley money right there is like okay we’ll just give him like eight or I guess it’ll be seven years at $10 million or something like that. Like this is going to be your like that money is just going to Thomas Harley at some point. So, or I mean what do you do with Jason Robertson, which is another conversation of Yeah. What do you do with him? So, but he go as uh the immortal Hawk Harelson would say, the longtime playbyplay man for the Chicago White Socks. He go does feel like he’s going to get I mean I mean he’s going to I I don’t know how you can make the cap logistics work by signing him because he’s going to want a raise. So he’s gonna want to go from seven more than deserving of he’s gonna want to go to nine. Oh, he’s like that’s Yeah, that thing’s gonna start with a one. So especially a young player who scores 30 goals a year. Like you can again pencil in 30 goals a year from Jason Robertson. You’re gonna have to find a way to get Ilia Leabushkin back on the roster in a couple years. [Laughter] [Music] Well, maybe they could swing a deal for a guy that’s going to be a little less expensive. Uh that could help down the middle. That uh that being Marco Rossi, who’s the final player that we’re going to discuss today because turns out a good season from him could accelerate the process and could end up in him getting paid handsomely. We’ll discuss to finish off today’s episode of Locked on NHL after this. final segment of today’s episode of Locked on NHL. Once again, we thank you for making Lockown NHL your first listen each and every day, Seth and JD. Finishing things off by uh talking about Marco Rossi. And I wanted to put Rossi in this JD because he may not cash in initially because I’m I’m starting to think that the Wild are going to try to go the bow and buy room route with him and just here’s a deal to get you to unrestricted free agency and we’ll work on a trade um between now and then. I at least I hope because we we continue to hear not close numbers far apart whatever spin you want whatever spin you want to put on that language we have heard it just it feels like there just really isn’t any way that this situation resolves itself and he stays in Minnesota long term but it’s not going to make it doesn’t make sense for him to hold out that just that just torpedoes his value and that plays right into the Wild’s hands. So, at some point there is going to need to be a deal signed to get him on the ice. And if he breaks the doors down and, you know, has another season like he’s had the last couple of years, there will be a team that then will say, “Yeah, we’ll acquire him right now and we will definitely sign him to a long-term deal afterwards.” because like that that’s the other half of this is all off seasonason he’s been available and Bill Garren has been fielding interest gauging interest throughout the league. There really doesn’t seem to be anybody else that is comfortable paying what he’s looking for in his next deal or in the case in the case of paying what paying what uh Bill Garin is expecting to get back for a 1C. So, in the case of the Vancouver Conucks, it was a first round pick and a player, which that’s not that’s not wowish. Yeah. So, he could very easily make himself another two or$3 million a year if he goes crazy. Uh because you look at all the deals that have been signed this off season and it’s ranges from 6 12 to 7 12 million per year and if the Wild view him as like a $5 million a year player and he comes out and he has a 30 goal season. Congrats, you just got yourself seven and a half easily, especially with the way the cap’s going up right now. Uh yeah, I I think and the other thing too, right, is hanging over all this is the Capri off situation. uh where if Rossi and Capri off playing together next year and we hope Capri off is fully healthy and returns to what we saw before he got hurt last year where he was on his marching towards an MVP uh trophy that LA last year and Rossi is one of the big beneficiaries of playing with uh Capri off like yeah I I don’t see how Rossi is not pushing a point per game type of situation where you’re yeah 30 goals and 50 assists because you’ve been setting up uh Capri off. Yeah, I know he’s 5 foot n but like the kid he’s good. Just pay good players. I don’t know why like if he was 6’3 like and was still always showed promise of maybe doing something. Uh I’m sure Bill Garin would be super happy to give that long-term deal, but because he’s 5 foot n he already has two 20 goal score 20 goal seasons under his belt. has 60 points last year. Um, yeah, man. Like I I just like if you didn’t Why did you draft him what was ninth overall if you weren’t going to pay him? Like if you didn’t think he was going to be a core player uh of your team, why did you draft him ninth overall? It’s it’s it’s insane. Like you got a player who hit you you found like finding players to hit in the draft. Um hard very hard to do. you got one and now you don’t want to pay him. It’s it’s it’s I would be going crazy if I was a Wild fan. Yeah. Yeah. We uh we certainly are. Um I I thought of one more to add to this that I think is a You want to talk about going crazy? You know, you want to know a name of one player that could potentially completely change the course of the direction that the team that he’s on goes over the next several seasons. Cam Fowler. Steuart Skinner. Oh, yeah. That’s a good one, too. Steuart Skinner. Turns out there is a lot riding on his shoulders for this upcoming season. Let me just paint the scene here a little bit for you. So, not only is he going into the final year of his current deal, another key member of the Edmonton Oilers is going into the final year of his, Conor McDavid. This McDavid dude who I’ve heard uh we’ve heard very I’ve heard he’s okay. Yes, I’ve heard he’s pretty good. But think about this. If you were Conor McDavid, obviously he has spent his entire career in Edmonton. Loves it there, I’m sure. Hard to beat playing with Leon Dryidle. But if Stuart Skinner has another hide and hide year that he had this past season, he’s going to single-handedly drive him to the airport and just get Yes. Get him out of here. Um like if he performs well, he’s going to get an extension from Edmonton. And it could sway McDavid to stay. I think McDavid stayed. Like I don’t like I don’t see a world where McDavid like him and Dry Cidle is like it’s I get I get what you’re doing. I get what I I it’s I think things would have to go catastrophically wrong. Like I for McDavid not to I wouldn’t be surprised if McDavid signs a new contract before the season starts. Whether it’s seven years, eight years, or one year or two years, that’s a different story. But, uh, I think McDavid feels like there’s unfinished business, right? Especially after losing twice in sound like a final here. Uh, yeah. Uh, I Yeah, I would I and Edmonton’s going to literally just go, “Here’s a blank check. Please fill out the number. We’ll make sure we’ll make sure it doesn’t bounce.” So, yes. Um, and Skinner has shown he’s shown flashes. He had a stretch this year where he was unbeaten and like what was it singing the playoffs? Either a shut out or a lot like just Yeah. For a while it was a shut out or nine goals allowed. Yeah. No in between. But like you think about it, if you’re Edmonton, you’re probably doing exactly what the Colorado Avalanche did this past season, right? Where their goalending situation was so abysmally bad with Alexander Gorg that they completely revamped the entire goalie room within like the first month and a half of the season. They were within two weeks of each other, the trades like Yeah. Um, it’s Yeah, you’re going into the season with Calvin Pickard and Stuart Skinner, both who are UFAS. I could Oh, that’s a fun one. What’s more, what’s more likely to happen? Both the guys are on the team by the end of the 2526 season or neither goalie is on the team by the end of the 2526 season. That’s a fun one. Yeah, I think it’s more likely that neither are. I could I’m I have to kind of agree with you and I think uh you because I you can’t you can’t just keep saying like they’re gonna figure it out. They’re gonna figure it out. Yeah. I think they are I wouldn’t be surprised if if Edmonton maybe gets off to a slow start. That’s the first thing they look to do is to try to change up the goalend because they’ve been riding the same guys last couple seasons and it hasn’t worked out. You do wonder if Yeah. This is the year where they’re like we have to do we have to do something different. What’s the definition of insanity? Uh, continuing to show faith in the same goalie that has let you down in the postseason multiple times. Yes, I know he has gotten you to the Stanley Cup final large part in large part due to his own performance, but he also has gotten you no further. So, yeah. And it’s not like he didn’t lose his starting job in the playoffs last year for Yeah. And the only reason that he went back in is because Pickard got hurt. So, Yep. Yep. Yep. So, Skinner is a good one. And don’t be surprised if Edmonton makes a move to go get I don’t know who who are you going to go get though. There’s somebody’s always available. There’s always somebody available. That would be spicy. [Laughter] That would be Carolina Reaper hot. I’m just gonna put that there. Spicy. Just gonna put that there. We moved out of Vander Kane so we get Jordan Bennington into the Evander Kane ran out of town so Jordan Bennington could walk in. Who knows? Well, I’m gonna leave that just massive cliffhanger for uh that being the end of today’s episode. So, appreciate everybody tuning in as you do each and every day of the week. Four NHL players could dramatically alter their financial futures with standout performances in 2025-2026. This episode examines the potential contract impacts for Patrik Laine, Brandt Clarke, Thomas Harley, and Marco Rossi. Laine’s scoring prowess, especially on the power play, could make him a hot commodity if he stays healthy with the Montreal Canadiens. The Los Angeles Kings’ Brandt Clarke faces a golden opportunity to step up on the blue line and potentially earn a significant payday.

In Dallas, Thomas Harley’s offensive production and strong defensive metrics might lead to a hefty raise, challenging the Stars’ cap situation. The Minnesota Wild’s handling of Marco Rossi’s contract negotiations comes under scrutiny, with speculation about a bridge deal or possible trade. These players’ performances could have far-reaching implications for their teams’ roster construction and financial planning.

Stuart Skinner’s crucial role for the Edmonton Oilers is also examined, including how his performance could influence Connor McDavid’s long-term future with the team. The episode provides expert analysis on these players’ pivotal seasons and the potential ripple effects across the NHL landscape. Listeners will gain insights into the complex interplay between player performance, contract negotiations, and team dynamics in professional hockey.
