Thursday reacting to the entire day of moves at the deadline for the Cubs. Uh because we’re expecting them and we’ll also preview Cubs Orioles later in that show. The plan before we go live at five will be for a YouTube short reacting to the Cubs move and then that trade deadline special will hit your audio and preferred audio feed uh video YouTube feed and preferred audio feed uh Thursday evening. Cubs salvage the series with the Brewers with a 10 to3 win on Wednesday. Cubs are now 63 and 45. I have some other numbers to go over in a few minutes as well with with their record. Called up on Wednesday, Moises Bayisteros, who is hitting 331 at Triple A, hit a three-run double in the third and the Cubs never look back. Michael Bush and Ian Hap also hit home runs to contribute offensively. PCA three hits. Some guy named Kyle Tucker, two for three with two walks and a two-run double, showed to Imanaga went five innings. Keller Field Bar and Palencia finished the game out of the Pep. Well, they couldn’t get swept, Sam, and they they won big on Wednesday. Well, you know, we t titled the episode yesterday, are the are the Brewers just better than the Cubs? Right. Um that’s right. And the answer yesterday was yeah, if this is Kyle Tucker, sure, so are a lot of teams. But but you saw on on Wednesday afternoon that when Kyle Tucker plays like and hits like Kyle Tucker, the Cubs, it it does a lot for their lineup. And um it it was really encouraging to see. I think it was a bit overdue, but uh having him look like that at the plate, all the at bats looked really solid, looked sound, and and I think that I is really why the Cubs were able to, you know, have success today. Everyone around him got going and um you know, it was nice to see Shota. I’m not going to call it a bounce back. Five innings, three earned, but he did look way better. He he was getting strikeouts. It was kind of like the the opposite of where he was early in the year where the the ERA in this start may not be great, but I actually like what I liked what I saw. And um you know, big day, you know, for for Pete, big day uh uh like you said for Bastos to get that hit. I I gotta ask you something though, Matthew. Um what happened with Ian Hap? Set me up for this one. And my question is is am I if if Hap’s not hurt, he hit a home run. He’s not hurt. But wait, and then Bister started today. Yeah. Was Hap bench? No, I think they were taking it slow after he fouled the pitch off his But if they were taking it slow, would he he would get two at bats off the bench? So, this could be a precursor to reality where maybe he plays more of a six-man role is what you’re saying. Yes. Okay. Yes, it is. Well, and I I like the look of it on Wednesday, that’s for sure. um reprehensible that it got reported that he was going to the IIL and even worse that the Cubs TV network would delete all the m associated materials related to the report. Just want to say that because we’re the the show that tells the truth and challenges and entertains and forms. Uh and so we cover the whole hog here. uh uh have to put that out there because that that was a shame what happened. Um not only did he not go on the IIL, he he as you said hit twice and and uh was out there a good chunk of the game. Uh then and then to top it off, he hits a no doubt home run which was great to see. So um that was weird. I I got up to change Bennett in the middle of the night and hap to IIL. Hours later, he hits a homer against a rival team. Yeah, I was still awake and the last thing I saw on Twitter before, you know, I got some shut eyee was Hap to the IIL and then I was, you know, I was busy doing stuff today and all of a sudden there was Hap. I know. And Videl Bruhan was designated for assignment. Uh yeah, and he he could still possibly find himself at AAA Iowa depending on the the waiver process and all that. Uh, let’s see. I, you know, by Astero Sam, excuse me, had the cup of coffee, you know, I’m emotional when I talk about this young prospect. He had the cup of coffee earlier this season and and didn’t do a whole lot. Here he is. He He gets up in the middle of the night like we did. Yep. Gets over to to MFAM. uh laces a ball left center gap opposite field line drive with bases loaded. Everybody comes around to score. You can see the genuine joy and excitement in him. and they really needed to avoid this sweep. And I know they won by seven. Mhm. And they already had a small lead prior to his hit, but by Asteros doing that given the situation and and credit to to to Jed Hoyer and and Craig Councel for, you know, Hap isn’t going on the IIL, but still let’s bring up Asteros and and play the urgency card a little bit. Uh that was really nice to see and it set the tone for the whole the whole game. I tweeted out in in you know my type of way. I said quote the kid with maybe the biggest hit of the season so far. Um now when you say that you mean the entire 100 plus games. Well, I think I was exaggerating a bit, but but it it really felt like, you know, because you and I always talk about this when we watch games or whatever. There’s always that certain play that makes you feel like it’s it’s a W or it’s an L and and and that that hit the left center. It took the game from 2-1 to 5-1. You know, as I was going about my day, I kind of banked in a win there and and the Cubs really needed to win. I mean, the difference between being a game back and and tied 4-4 with the Brewers. So, you you essentially, if everything stays the same, you just have to take three out of five against them at home uh in in mid August and you get the tiebreaker with them and you really, you know, you you really needed to win this game today and that was the biggest hit of the game. So, so give him a ton of credit for that. Well, just purely in the standings, how, you know, how do you feel, you know, go could have been three games, but it’s only one going into the off day into the deadline. You feel much better. You feel much better. You you felt like if you’re going to w win a division, you couldn’t have gotten swept in this series. I think that’s fair to say. Yeah. Yeah. It was hopeful they would salvage it, and they did. Uh, yeah. Yeah, Imanaga Sharper. Great job by Keller, Thear, and Palencia. Pretty much like they have all summer and really all year. Off day Thursday, followed by a three-gamer against the Orioles this weekend. All those games at 120 uh during our our episode after the trade deadline. We’ll preview that series as well. The trade deadline’s tomorrow. We’re going to do one final preview right after this. Today’s episode is brought to you by FiveHour Energy. Time to fuel up and turn it up with five energy transfusion. Trade deadline is at 5:00 p. p.m. Central time on Thursday. We’ll be live at 5 to preview what happened during the day and you can get YouTube shorts from one of us during the day. will also be on your preferred audio feed uh by Thursday evening. So, I’m going really just going off of this week and really just going off athletic and ESPN reports here about who the Cubs are actually connected to. Um starting pitchers, Sam entering the last day. Edward Cabrera, man, we’re still doing this. McKenzie Gore, Mitch Keller, Zack Efflin, Zack Gallon, Mel Kelly, Mike Soka, Adrien Howser, and Shane Bieber, who is about to make his season debut after recovering from Tommy. John Bieber is owed about three M’s the rest of the year and will decide this off season on a player option or a buyout. So, he might be, especially if he pitches well, he might just be a rental. I think that’s a name to watch for Thursday. And uh I can get to the relief market and position players later. I don’t I don’t even know if it’s someone in the group of names I just mentioned, but it’s starting to to feel like, okay, are they going to get one of these names? Because yes, amongst anything, which is probably not the right phrase or grammar by me, well, at least anything, they need to trade for a starter on on Thursday. Well, you know, I’ve had a real real busy non-Cubs week just, you know, personally, and so I haven’t been as in tuned and locked in as I typically am. But with that being said, I am surprised. I I I’ve kind of just been waiting for you to text me, hey, you know, you know, let’s go get a short up. Let’s go, kid. Let’s go. Right. Right. Uh Cubs get Hower for Jonathan Long. But if you remember the last time the Cubs were in an allout position, u it was really 2021. And if you if I remember correctly, didn’t most of that happen on the last day? It did. It happened the last, I believe, three hours. Yeah. So, you know, Jed Jed is Jed is Jed and he he doesn’t like to make a deal where he feels like he’s just, you know, all right, fine. We need it. Let’s do it. So, he’s going to wait till the very last second. Um, I I will say I think Edwin Cabrera will be uh a Chicago Cub. um you know, not as not as certain um on Aueno Suarez, but I really think they want him too. Yeah. And then everything else I don’t I I don’t have much much on, you know, much predictions on. Yeah. I I think they’re going to get a controllable starter and a rental starter. Uh beyond that, I’m really I I don’t I think there’s a possibility beyond that they don’t do anything. Um, I was encouraged to to learn from Jesse Rogers on on Wednesday that they are connected to some some good names in the relief market including David Bednar. Uh, so to me that was that was encouraging. There’s multiple national voices as well as Mooney and Chararma locally and and Jesse Rogers that that are still connecting the Cubs to Suarez. Um, as of this hour, it looks like it’s the Cubs, the Tigers, and the Mariners for him. Um, if it’s a three-h horsese race, you really want to get him. I think they could. They’d have to probably overpay though for that. Uh, Ken Rosenthal on on Wednesday uh said the Cubs will be one of the most active teams at the deadline. That was encouraging to me. And to your point about a flurry of moves at the end, that could happen. You know, that that qualifies. Uh I think there’s a chance that they pick up a Harrison Bader, a Michael A. Taylor, or pick your Urios Ramon or Luis uh for for a bench type role. Um, but I really think they’re they’re focused on okay, controllable starter one, rental starter two, and let’s see what happens after that. Yeah, I think they’ve got to do something offensively with the bench unless, like you said, I mean, unless unless Hap goes to it, you know, and well, that would be that would be huge and then Bisteros, you know, takes over. I mean, that’d be a huge story if he became a bench player. Man, I’ve gotten a bunch of texts, you know, are they where are they? Where they’re going to do something like we’re not I mean, if we end up doing a show and and and passing tweets out looks like, you know, one of the premier buyers, Cub stood Pat. Cubs stood Pat. That would be truly the most shocking thing that I’ve seen, not only in our three years of doing this show, but but in my 30 plus years of life. Well, it would be an epic fail if they stay. Is that fair to say or is that exaggerated? If they epic fail if they don’t add to this team. Yeah. It would be insanity. I I mean they’re they’re going to make a deal or four or three. U three I mean I wish Yeah, I could drink your Kool-Aid, but Well, I actually have some breaking news. No way. I’m kidding. I’m kidding. I was going to say we have to re-record. Uh good show. Cubs are still interested in right-hander Mike Sroa. Ah, yeah. They’ve been on the phone with the Nats about McKenzie Gore. They’re going to get Yeah, maybe they do a package for Sroa and Finnegan. That’d be good. Breaking news. Uh, the Cubs would really like to bring in Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera. Cabrera. Yes. Breaking news. Luis Robert is a Cub. No, no, no, no. That would be He hasn’t been connected to the North Side. No, I um I’m still I’m I’m looking for that blockbuster with Arizona, man. Kelly and and and Auo, the rental blockbuster, Suarez, Kelly, and Shelby Miller. I um I don’t miss uh the hot stove. Let’s just put it like that. Yeah, I had a lot of thoughts similar to that on Thursday, on Wednesday, excuse me. Basically, not fearing, but just more reason to soak in the during the season moments, especially being attached more to my phone this week. It’s not my my preference. Mhm. And I feel like sometimes in the off season, um, I have the temptation to do that. I mean, the winter meetings is different, you know, like four or five days in a row of that. Okay. Pretty fun. Especially this last December was a blast. Um, but you know, right now I I really want it to be about the games. They do need to fortify their team. and Jed Hoyer, depending on some of these names, will need to get out of his comfort zone on Thursday. Yep. And I think Owen Casey is on the board. Um I’m not sure about Jackson Wiggins, you know, is Bayister on the board despite him being here now? Maybe that’s why they called him up. Just a quick little, hey, hey, this guy’s a big league hitter. Yeah. Um, I think they’re really trying to persuade teams about Kevin Alcantra. Yeah, there’s going to be a lot of persuading needed. I think that could be a possible match with the Guardians. I don’t know what you would get back for that. Might have to add a second piece to get Shane Bieber. Um, but if you can if you can work with them on that, it’s it’s enticing for sure. Um he entered the week slashing 263 347 452. Uh so a little better lately but but a little underwhelming overall. Uh Jefferson Rojos I don’t think is going to go anywhere. I do think Jonathan Long could be a good match on a corner for someone and even he could start Friday for a team, you know, be in someone’s lineup. So, I think that’s intriguing for some teams. Uh so, we’ll just have to see. James Triantos uh has been awfully cold this this year. Uh but maybe he’s in some type of a package. So, they got a lot of options to do that. Yeah. And and I have to say after again, not always fair to make a determination off a series, but after this series, I I would like to see them get a reliever that’s been there and done that. Agreed. Agreed. Agreed. They really need that. I I feel so and maybe even more than than a positional fit, but we’ll see. I agree. All right. I have some second staff second half stats in front of me uh since the All-Star game. Also some Cubs win loss uh stats as well right after this. This is Locked on Cubs, the number one destination on the planet to talk Cubs. Thank you so much for being with us. Uh shout out to the everydayers and you can become an everydayer by joining us for every episode uh throughout the week. Okay, Sam. The Cubs are now 63 and 45 overall with Wednesday’s win. 30 and 26 on the road. Yep. 32-13 after a loss, 18-17 since June 19th. uh this 12gamer before the deadline they only went six and six. Really disappointing. Underwhelming. And then they finished July 14 and 10. Yeah. Which is better than I thought. Yeah. Uh I realized I should say 14 and 10 July. Okay. Um, yeah, it it was disappointing that they went two out of three win, two out of three loss, two out of three win, two out of three loss to open the open the second half. I thought that could have been an eight and four um at least seven and five. Yeah, I would I thought it could be an eight and four uh uh 12game stretch and you know, I thought Right. So, they finished two games worse than you thought. Well, I didn’t think that that was what what was going to happen, but I thought, you know, you’re just waiting for this team to just do what 97 96 win teams do, which is just get hot again. You know, I I I know I sound like a broken record and you know, uh uh I do that often, but it’s it’s it’s just a lot of just win win one, series win, series loss. Win two, lose two, win three, lose two, and you’re just waiting. And maybe this series, this weekend against uh you know, one of the most disappointing teams uh you know, in all the sport, uh Baltimore, you know, maybe you could find a way to and get some momentum going. Yeah, and they had a uh win streak snap Thursday by the Blue Jays. Um but boy, did they come out of the gate slow? Never really recovered. Um so yeah, I I I’m hoping for big things this weekend for sure with that. Uh one reason they’re going to need to fortify the bench Thursday is this stat right here. Do you want to guess John Bird’s offensive line uh since the All-Star game. Oh, since the All-Star game. Yeah, since the break. What’s What’s he What’s like how many hits does he have and how many at bats? I’m going to say John Birdie since the break is 0 for two. 0 for three. Good job. Um folks, why you know this isn’t high school ball. Um, you know, why why does he have a position on this club still? Man, I appreciate garbage time. I appreciate when you make me laugh. Yeah, it’s a pitch and garbage time. Is that why he’s on the club? Get someone else. Well, okay. They got Bruhan out of here. Get Birdie out of here, too. Well, I Okay, you got a backup catcher. You got Turner. Okay, we know We know those two spots are locks. Got to get two better guys. What’s interesting is the one spot could be Hap or Shaw or Bayister and the other spot should be someone they acquire on Thursday. Yeah, but they I like I like Bird’s ability to pinch run late. I’m starting to cool off on that. Okay. Um it’s something that I I could appreciate, you know, the last couple months. Sure. Even in Tokyo, something like that. No, you’re going to Let me tell you something. Yeah, he’s The Cubs have a major league player that has three at bats in 12 games. Please, let me tell you this. You’ll appreciate it in October. Game one, Wrigley Field, 22, bottom nine. Hope you’re right. Lead off base hit by Asteros with a base hit. And then Birdie comes off the bench, steals second, throw goes into right center, he gets to third, and then it’s a Nicoer sack fly. This game’s over. Okay. Well, I love that. I love that scenario. So, you know, I like You have Bayasero starting. I just want Well, that was just wanted to make some excitement. Um, you remember the guy Gore on the 2018 Cubs? Yeah, Terrence. Terrence Gore. I mean, when that guy came in the game, I I I don’t know if people remember this, but when the Cubs lost that wild card game, he scored the game tying run on on Bayas’s single and then he actually came up later on and he swung at a pitch that was way out of the zone on a full count. If he if he took that, he he would have stole second and third, the Cubs would have tied that game. Right. Why did he swing at that? I was screaming so hard when it was 3-2. I go, just give him the take side. He’s not going to get a hit. Right. Right. Just get in the pitcher’s head. Just put the bat on the ground. His only a walk is a triple for that dude. Just don’t even swing. He was a deadline deal, right? I think so. Yeah. Or maybe like an August waiver back then they had that. Do you have any trade deadline memories before I give you some other stat? Uh yeah, of course. I’m really nervous to give you some of these averages, man. Especially Seyas. Nomar Harden. Oh, no. Mar’s a classic one. Chapman. Probably those are the big three. Sea is hitting 136 since the All-Star break. Yeah. Uh Bush 167. Turner 188. He could stop me at any time. Swanson 209. Kelly a a dismal 212. Uh Hap 231. Tucker 235, Maguire 333. Her’s been good. And then PCA, her and Shaw are hot. PCA also 333. Her 356, Shaw 14 of 39 for a 359 clip. So, there’s some offensive numbers right there. I do have some team stats since the break. Cubs rank 18th in offense, ninth in starter ERA, 27th in bullpen RA. So, um, they’ll get going. Any, uh, any final thoughts or predictions before the deadline as So, you think Carrera is going to be a Cub? Yes. And I can see Anthony Bender being in that deal as well, the believer. Another package deal. You should work at Amazon and [Laughter] Hopefully people got that. Uh maybe like a rice glaciius from the Braves. Yeah, I’ve heard I’ that I haven’t heard that name up until this week, but now I’ve heard that too. Uh you know, you could get a package Charlie Morton and Andrew Kitridge from the Orioles, the team you’re about to play. Maybe they just walk over from the team hotel. So where do you think the Orioles stay? Would that be Hotel Zachary or? Yes. All right. Thank you so much for listening to Lockdown Cubs, uh, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. 1. Gore is worth more than 60pts of value on baseball trade value, whereas Cabrera is about 25. It would be nice if they didn’t spend 4-5 guys on 1 guy.

  2. Sweet. The Mets and Phillies both grabbed stud closers. The Cubs Soroka with an ERA of 4.87 will lead this staff to a WS championship. Or not. We only had to give up 2 prospects.

  3. What’s very impressive to me is that over Kyle tuckers slump he still had a 19 game on base streak and walked more than he struck out with around 13 hits or something like that.

  4. Hello Matt and Sam, I'm getting really sick of Kelly coming up with runners in scoring position. I really don't care what he did earlier in the year. I would rather see Shaw in Kelly's spot. Let the kid hit when it actually means something. Put Kelly in the nine hole. Just a thought. Go cubs.

  5. We NEED to sign a starting pitcher. This team simply cannot win a ring without another arm in the rotation. Thats the bare minimum.

  6. Hey Cubbies. Congrats on taking Game 3. I'll take 2/3. I expect both teams to lose about 20 more games by end of season, so this loss is no big deal.

  7. Man, Phillies fleeced Twins for Duran. Twins should have gotten more. Duran will be greatly missed at Target Field. Now Twins need to fire Rocco Baldelli. The huge mistake was not firing him after that epic collapse last year.

Jax is still available. He is struggling some this year, but he is a strikeout machine. I know Crew won't go after him, so if he lands with Cubs, we will come see him at Wrigley.

  8. Alcantara hit 2 more HR's tonight. Look at his last 30 games. This guy is a potential 5 tool CF at age 22!! Age 22 in AAA with an .820 OPS & 6'6 205. He is EASILY getting you Bieber?? You two need to follow better info on Cubs prospects. GREGG HUSS

  9. These guys and all the fans saying if they do this or dont do that, they will be irate and some sayibg they are out. Why would they break the bank when yall goofs continue to fill the stadium every yr no matter what. No accountsbility but barking in comment sections. Power is in ticket/merchandise purchasing.

  10. People getting their panties in a bunch over a couple week hitting slump. It happens every yr to every team. Often multiple times. Shitzn the brewers were in an offensive slump for a couple months early in yr. Relaxxxx.

  11. Soroka? Are you fucking kidding me. I knew it. Asshole hoyer spending money on shit. He got his money so he don't care. Stupid ricketts should have waited to see what he would have done and than fire his ass.

  12. Love the show as always. Why you think Cubs have stopped running recently. PCA and Tucker have had chances, though less for PCA with more slug. PCA has 4 SB in July and Tucker had 3…..nice win today, but definitely had chances today to run early.

  13. But!! Are we ever gonna see any Cubs' prospects, contribute, "on" the Cubs' Major League team!!??🧐🤔 I'm tired of seeing Cubs' prospects, going to the W.S. on other teams!! PCA as you all know, is from another organization!!🧐🫣😲😩

  14. I want to start by saying that this podcast is the best Cubs one out there because you guys tell the truth! Bleacher nation may be more mainstream however they sugar coat everything just like Marquee! I appreciate the honest opinions! Now let’s add my two cents worth on things. They only extended Jed to be the puppet for cheap ownership and be the “yes” man when it comes to the financials! Winning windows don’t last long! We kept hearing that the Cubs were all in at the trade deadline however with less 13 hours to go we’ve add a second Taillon and another Pressly! Well done Jed!!! Hopefully there’s more significant news to come but if that’s it what was the point in getting anyone period?
