The Vegas Golden Knights are ranked second in the NHL’s early power rankings
The not too early NHL power rankings are out and the Golden Knights are ranked second, believe it or not, behind the two-time defending Cup champion Florida Panthers in the NHL.com ratings. We’ll get to that as we return right here on Locked on Golden Knights. Your Locked On Golden Knights, your daily podcast on the Vegas Golden Knights, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Hi again everyone, Tony Kasco and Chris Gollik from Las Vegas. Thanks for making us your first listen every day. I’m a longtime sports reporter, sports caster and such, a marketing consultant, and the host of the Believe in Vegas podcast. Chris is the owner of Silver State Cards and Sports and the collectibles editor for the Hockey News. Now, coming up ahead on today’s show later on, we’ll talk about Bruce Cassidy saying that change is good for Mitch Mner on a podcast and is Jonathan Maraso on the move once and for all not happy in Nashville. So, the Florida Panthers, Chris, are the overwhelming top choice, overwhelming favorite as number one in the NHL.com’s Super 16 power rankings. I think it’s too soon, too early. And uh Chris, look who the second team is in those power rankings. It is VGK. Even in the off season, would you would you be ranking the Golden Knights this high? I mean, listen, let’s Florida deserves to be number one. There’s no question there. The concern about Florida is the mileage. Obviously, two Stanley Cup runs, three trips to the final. So, there that’s literally the only possible concern about the Panthers. But Vegas, Dallas, Edmonton, Carolina, Colorado, Winnipeg. I might even throw Tampa in there. You literally just throw the the the poker chips into the bag and draw them out one by one to do the rankings at that point. I think you’re splitting hairs on today, July 31st, to get to that point. But the Golden Knights are definitely anywhere among the top five or six favorites for the Stanley Cup. The rank is fair. And like I said, I think it’s just if you would have done this poll cuz they have their point system the way they do this on NHL on the NHL network. I think if you would have done this tomorrow, the points might have been different. If you do it the next day, the points would have been different. It’s a very fair ranking on July 31st. Yeah, for sure. Uh did you say you’re talking about the Florida Panthers? Uh the Brad Marshand Cub Celebration, he’s got a photo with uh himself, Nathan McKinnon, and Sydney Crosby. I saw that just come across Twitter all cup winners. So they show they showed up at his cup celebration and uh Tom Galiti had uh VGK ranked fifth. So again, a little bit too soon. Just like I cannot I can’t do this like if we were to do a show uh give VGK a grade for free agency. It’s not complete yet. I would have to give them an incompletion. I I don’t think well everybody you would give everybody an incompletion not just Vegas but yes right right of course of course but I mean if we focused in on the Golden Knights right now maybe B+ but again if they can complete some pieces here uh like we expect them to then we might give them a higher ranking. Yeah, I mean listen, Mitch Martner, we’re still in the honeymoon phase right now. We’re excited. We have not experienced what Toronto has experienced. And you know, the Martyr perspective could change, but yeah, I mean, listen, the Golden Knights went out and got the crown jewel of free agency on paper at least as far as regular season help is concerned. So, yeah, I mean, if we’re going to do um a free agency grade, I think it would probably be an A+ because they got the best player, right? Constitution winds up being Yeah. Yeah. I mean, listen, if the if it winds up that the Gold Knights don’t have enough depth as a result and they could allocate that $12 million elsewhere, then okay, fine. We’ll eat that punch later on down the road. But the power rank does make sense at second. Again, betting favorites, Florida plus 700 according to FanDuel. Florida Panthers plus 700, Carolina 750, BGK 850 at third, Edmonton 850, Dallas 900, Colorado 950. And I feel like we need I don’t know why. Maybe if we bury a third segment somewhere randomly, but why is Carolina getting so much respect in the betting? I don’t understand that at all. And they’re they’re high up on the power rank as well. They were number five overall on the power ranks. I don’t understand this. Someone talked me off the ledge why Carolina is good. Uh would Florida and VGK be that dream final? East versus West. all the star power must see TV, right? It would really Well, okay. For who? For for for NHL fans who enjoy hockey, sure, they would enjoy it. But as far as the NHL is concerned, that would be disaster because VGK is not a big media market, as are the Florida Panthers, not a big media market, right? But Vegas sells. Vegas does sell. Vegas does equal to ratings. I mean, were pretty good when they won the cup. If it was the dream matchup is Toronto Edmonton, let’s be clear about this. or if my when Montreal gets back to relevancy or any original six and Edmonton and you know kind of stuff like that. Those are the dream matchups as far as the NHL and large in the fan bases outside of uh South Florida and Southern Nevada are concerned. So uh and looking at these rankings uh behind BK, you have Dallas. Dallas is an unknown quantity to me because maybe the change behind the bench does them well. a lot of the same players. They receain uh fourth is Edmonton. Carolina as you mentioned fifth and then uh Colorado, Winnipeg, Tampa 8, Toronto nine and the Caps are 10th and some of those teams are under the radar teams. Winnipeg still will be solid. Uh Colorado of course will be Colorado. Uh you like Tampa maybe a little bit higher. Again, this is all good conversation here in late July. Caps dropping all the way to 10 after being among the Cup favorites as the season progressed is kind of surprising, but they were also relatively quiet in free agency. Possibly that could change. I know a couple different articles I read for the third segment could uh possibly help their offseason a little bit. We’ll see. Um, as far as other teams down there, Colorado, you got McKinnon, you got Mar. That team’s going to be going to be valid obviously. Winnipeg. Can Hellbuck win a big game? Yes, he won one finally in the last uh barely. I mean, down to the waning seconds, but uh he got a big win and get in a game seven playoff game. Tampa’s always going to be there. Toronto, I mean, listen, it’s a new era in Toronto with depth pieces and such and some new upcoming players. So, we’ll see how that shakes out. Um Edmonton is a team that I think is due for regression. So, the Florida Panthers have Yes, they have the star power, right? You got Mattie Kachchuck, you got Sam Reinhardt, you got Bennett, you got so many great players, Barov, you got so many great players on that team who lead, but you also have the depth pieces. Nate Schmidt on your third defensive line. He’s on the move, but uh I think Nok is staying there and a lot of other players as far as that can that are depth contributors. In Edmonton, it’s McDavid and Dry Cidle. It and yes, there are there’s some depth, but at the end of the day, it’s McDavid and Dryidle. And there’s very few times that team performs well in the playoffs if McDavid and Dryidle are not putting up points right now. So you look at the mileage on the Oilers. I mean they’ve lost to the Stanley Cup champion how many of the last seasons and then as deep as deep they’ve been going here. They are due for regression. Not as much as the Florida Panthers I don’t think. Okay. So ranked number two the Golden Knights. The question here, the expectations have gone wild with Marner and of course we’re partially and and and the budget probably and the budget. Uh yeah, they budgeted into the uh Stanley Cup round now here in Vegas, but they they probably budgeted the game six. Like if goes game four, they went seven. I did say seven. Uh, but in any event, do you think that this is too high for the Golden Knights and the fan base has gone wild? A lot of martyr jerseys are sold here now for VGK. I mean, is it too high? Maybe a smidgen. I mean, listen, Aiden Hill has been trending the right direction for the last three years. At some point, I need to pull back the reinss and just be excited for what Aiden Hill has been doing, but I have concerns. And again, 50 starts last season, excellent job as far as his health was concerned. And you know, we set a good reasonable goal for him, I think, in our episode. It would be nice if earlier in the week where I think I penned Aiden Hill for 51 starts and a goal. Yeah. No, and I set a save percent of 910. So, but point being is though he’s tra he’s he’s going in the in the right direction there. Questions about the defense. Obviously, this is where this is the make orb breakak situation, right? If you got if the go you you can win games 6-4 all the time in the regular season, right? If that’s the method to victory, if the every if every overunder for the Gold Knights is seven and a half, it’s going to be a tough postseason. Coming up next, Bruce Cassidy appeared on the Energy Line podcast and we’ll tell you what he talked about. Uh Mitch Mner, of course, uh he also talked about Jack Eel and being named the Team Canada to the coaching staff for the Olympic Games. Next on Lockdown Golden Nights, we have all been there, logging on early, waiting forever for concert tickets for the stinking Backstreet Boys. Of course, that’s a huge show here. I got a good story for you though. But go ahead. Lockdown Golden Knights. We appreciate you tuning in. Tomorrow’s WTF day. What? The Friday. Go ahead. Pretty well. So, Condos, we’re going back to our work days here. Uh, his wife is a Backstreet Boys fan. So, Condos being the good husband that he is, he’s going to take his wife to go see Backstreet Boys. He had gotten tickets sent to him through another staff member who had extra tickets for whatever reason, so it worked out just fine. Condos gets to T-Mobile Arena, opens up uh whatever. It wasn’t game time, but he opens up his app to see his tickets and goes to scan. You only have one ticket. What do you mean I have one ticket? There’s only one ticket here. So, he’s trying to he couldn’t get a hold of the person. They they only sent him one instead of two tickets. So, he’s stuck there in front of T-Mobile Arena with his wife waiting to go street back waiting to go see Backstreet Boys. And, uh, his only choice was to dust off like 400 bucks at the last second to take her in to go see. So, uh, good job, Condos. Right. You would have found them if it were game time. I’m sure they Yes, he would have found him for less. Yeah. And you know something else that’s coming to the sphere. Uh the World Cup draw. I was going to say Metallica. I was going to say Metallica. Metallica’s coming there. So you can get all those tickets right there on the Game Time app. Good time. Work some angles on that one. Uh so Bruce Cassidy was on the Energy Line podcast yesterday. If it were if he put a little thought into it, he could have been eating a burrito for the energy line here in Vegas, right? Uh, it’s with Julie Stewart Banks and Nate Thompson. And Cassidy called Mitch Mner a big game player based on what he saw in person there at the Four Nations. And he called Mner a really good fit here in Vegas. Said Mner is highly motivated, wants to win. And Cassidy also said that change might be a good thing for Mitch Mner. And what I liked about Cassidy and uh just some of his comments on that show was he was saying, you know, that was something in the past right in Toronto. He said like with Eel, once Eel arrived here in Vegas, they never talked about the past. Just like, hey, how do you fit in? What could we do? How could we make each other better? Which I really liked. That was literally what I was going to lead off with and say what I enjoyed about it. It wasn’t uh what went wrong in Buffalo. What could you have done better? No, it’s uh you’re here in Vegas and you know starting with the ELEL side and I’m and I don’t think Cassie and Marner have had an in-depth conversation yet. Cassie mentioned his family was here. They’re doing looking for houses and everything, but the conversation with Jack was what do you want your legacy to be? And then the Patrice Berseron parallel came up obviously. So I think a very similar conversation is going to happen between Mitch Marner and Coach Cassidy. Obviously, you want to win a Stanley Cup. I want to win a Stanley Cup. Coach Cassidy saying that, not me. I mean, I’m not going to win a Stanley Cup, but you know what I’m saying there. So, that’s the conversation that’s going to happen. It’s again, how can we make each other better? What do you expect out of Cassidy as a coach? Cassidy is going to explain his expectations for Marner as a player and everything. And you did hear Cassidy make the comments, the defensive structure is important, but it’s a scoring offense, so he kind of lets the lets the guys go a little bit as long as they make sure to not to forget it’s a 200 foot or not not to forget the defensive end of the ice was the way he put that. I like that, too. And Cassidy said that he will tell Marner what he told Eel, be yourself and the rest will sort itself out. And I like that you need your personality there, right? I mean, so that will be good. And from all things, all indicators, uh, Marner’s not this monster, right, in in the off season. We get that, but not the monster that he was out to be, uh, there. Will he be the fall guy here in Vegas if things do not go right for the Golden Knights? I mean, I think we thought the same of Jack Eel, right? I mean, right, Ca Eel didn’t need Cassidy to do well. Eichel needed Cassidy needed Eichel to do well because Cassid’s career and Mcrimman’s career momentarily doubt Ekeel a lot. He helped him out defensively. Oh, no doubt he helped him out. Become a complete player. If Ekeel doesn’t do well, stuff, another word for stuff rolls downhill and it stops at the coach. That’s how it works in in the IHL. So, if if the EKLE situation didn’t work out as good as it did, and I’m not saying they had to win a Stanley Cup, but if EKL didn’t develop to this point and they don’t win a Stanley Cup, it’s a different conversation. So, now that same I mean, if anyone’s got pressure this season, it’s coach Cassidy. Yes, he’s got an amazing roster to deal with and everything. Um, but Cassidy now, it’s like, oh, we just gave you another 100 point player. Your team was, you know, a couple wins from getting to the conference final. You got a recent Stanley Cup champ, a lot of recent Stanley Cup champions. you know, what is the goal next year? And this is a napkin topic. What’s the what’s the goal next season? Is it cup or bust at this point? And, you know, I think that’d be a good conversation to have. Um, as far as how Cassid is going to work on all this, it’s that’s the fun part. And of course, it was brought up about well, Cassidy brought up himself because he he’s tired of getting asked about knows the question where Mart’s going to fit in. And he’s going to get a look with Jack. He’s going to get a look with Jack and they’ll go from there. They go, “Thanks for answering that question before we could ask it.” Yeah, I know. He he knew it was coming and everything. And just kind of going off on things to hear that Coach Cassidy is excited for the Olympics. Uh excited to bring his family. I thought that was pretty cool. Cassidy does have ties to the local market from his minor league days and everything. Three years. Three years. Can he speak Italian? I mean, listen, it’s probably not the best situation for a prospering NHL player to be playing in Italy necessarily, but you know, it’s still nice if you got that love for the game and you know, you’re developing, you’re you’re getting your income, go to Italy to play some hockey, I guess. Yeah, for sure. No, that must have been a fun excursion for him. I wonder if this was in his single days when he was back there. Uh Cassidy spoke about Alex Petrangelo U and I thought that that was pretty cool in some of the comments and he said that he would miss Pro’s competitiveness and accountability and the strength I guess of Alex accountability was really good that state yes absolutely without a doubt and he was the first one to tell you about accountability and any press opportunity that he got Petrangelo but what I you know the part that perhaps perhaps we didn’t see a lot was just the way Petrangelo really coddled and looked after a lot of the younger players on the team. Petrangelo and Alec Martinez have no problem standing up to any member of the coaching staff if they feel they’re turning it on a little bit too much. I’ve heard internal stories from a few different sources for that. As far as Pitch Rangelo is concerned, it’s it’s the family side number one, right? He sees the big picture. It’s yes, obviously when you’re in that locker room, you’re a professional, but he sees the human side of the game. Um, Petrangelo also is good at the accountability. This is what coach Cassidy talked about. And he has no problem going up and down the bench or something like that and, you know, getting things out of the players, things that the coaches don’t, it’s not always on the coaches to deliver that message. It’s the accountability from the leaders and everything. So, I understand that a lot of us remember the the hobbled version of Petrangelo last year. And yes, his team is better off without injured Petrangelo, which we can argue about that. But the fact that he’s not going to be, he’ll be around, I think, but he’s not going to be around every day obviously with the Golden Knights. The fact that he’s not in the big picture right now, it’s not good. And it’s going to be a concern. And it’s the locker room influence. It’s the on ice again, the healthy version of him. And I can go on for an entire segment about why this is not a good thing that Peter Angelo’s gone. And it’s there there’s concerns about the defense right now. There’s concerns. Yeah. And another thing that stood out, uh, Cassidy talking about Jack Eel becoming more of a vocal leader in the locker room. Coming up next, a former from Warner, too. A former vocal leader. Now, trade rumors are heating up for Jonathan Marshes. So, nice segue. We’ll get back to that when we return right here on this edition of Locked On Golden Nights. Welcome back on Locked On Golden Nights, the Thursday edition. Tony Kardasco, Chris Gooic reporting from Las Vegas. We appreciate you making us your first listen. Please subscribe to our Lockdown Golden Nights YouTube channel. Coming up tomorrow, leave all your comments, good or bad, about VGK from the past week for WTF. What the Friday? What the Friday? Uh, so Nick Ciprios, NHL insider, now reporting that Jonathan Marsheso could still be moved. Remember the reports of Marshaso saying that he wants out of Nashville? Well, more rumors coming up as they surfaced this past week. Caprio saying three teams have a need for a top six winger. Ottawa, Toronto, that would be savage play right there if he goes to Toronto or Edmonton. even Edmonton uh Maple Leafs and Oilers would be exceptional and add a lot more fuel to the meetings between the two teams. I know one thing about Jonathan Marsh. So when we went through everything here and he was again just upset with the team and whatever, but uh through my sources I was told he didn’t want to go anywhere cold. He’s from Canada, but you know, once you get that Vegas like heat in your system, why would you want to go anywhere else as far as the climate, as far as the weather is concerned? So, that’s the first thing that surfaced in my mind. Ottawa, uh, you’ve got Toronto and Edmonton. Man, those aren’t like um Bruce Cassidy Sunshine State like climates. No, absolutely not. My kids don’t know what it’s like to shovel snow. I kind of want to keep it like that. I think keep it that way. Yeah, that’s that was like the first day of the snowstorm in the Midwest or up north is always kind of fun, right? It’s not usually it’s usually lower to mid30s. It’s not too cold and it’s fun, but then it’s the days after the snowstorm and the snow gets all hard, the black ice underneath the ice underneath and it’s just that sucks. So, we’re done with that nonsense. Let’s forget about all that drama. Um March, so you can add a fourth team to that list, too. I read something else a couple days ago about even the Capitals possibly kicking tires too right there. And of course, you got some former teammate ties there in Logan Thompson. So, it’s kind of weird. You wonder, first of all, I wonder how the Predators view Jonathan March so in the locker room. Um, he’s very passionate. There were rumblings about him and coach Cassidy. not seeing eye to eye, mutual respect, but if there’s one player you can count on that probably had the most heated moments with coach Cassie, it’s definitely Jonathan Marches. So, um, as the article points, a fierce competitor, chance to join a legitimate contender, but I would be shocked if Barry Trotz pulls the plug on this so early, unless there’s major concerns in the locker room. And if that’s the case, now you’re waving the white flag and you’re either getting nothing in return or you’re going to eat some of that salary. Is that good for the PRs long term? I don’t know if that’s the right idea or not. And you got to think Trotz probably wants to see this thing through one more time. This is his plan to bring in these three superstars and to see if that can get the the Predators, you know, to relevancy and to playoff team and make a run for the Stanley Cup. That’s what everyone thought was going to possibly happen when all when the band came together. So, yeah, but all those three teams, I mean, Edmonton, put them on Edmonton. Let’s see March or so with the Oilers. I think that would be so much fun. He would be Marcho kind of is the villain depending on which VGK fan you talk to right now. I think that’s garbage. But the reality is Marcho is certainly a little bit of the villain. And now if you put him on Edmonton, he gets booed. He gets booed when he comes back. Now you definitely don’t get a standing ovation from from uh from Foley and MCY and Mcrim. Oh. Uh that was weak. Why’ you have to bring that up? They there was no standing go. That was no standing up. No standing up. Uh Nashville, let’s face it, was not the right fit. Yes, they signed name players, but we heard all those rumblings about Marcoso and Andrew Brunett, you know, not seeing eye to eye, and then they were moving him all around. Is Andrew Bernett still employed? I don’t know. I I don’t get that. Drinking buddies, I’m I’m sure somewhere. Uh but again, they moved Marsho around. Lowb blow. You might not know his background. Lowblow. He was Sorry. Uh yeah, it happens. Uh no, it’s just the fact that he couldn’t fit in and they kept moving him around. So I mean that’s not very good. No consistency and you know Marsha so doesn’t care. He’ll just blow up and that’s what he did and the rest is and you want you need a guy like that in the locker room. You want that one guy in the locker room who’s going to shake it up and it’s going to drive the coach nuts. Definitely it will drive the coach nuts. I’m sure Cassidy, you know, lost a few hairs courtesy of March or so, and I’m sure they, you know, had some some tense moments, but you need that in any locker room. It’s not, it can’t always be the coach harping about, hey, this is what needs to happen and blah blah blah. You need that player that’s going to push back a little bit. I think that’s healthy. And Marcho in any locker room, I think, is a quality addition. Still, what age 34? Whatever he is right now. Close. So, he’s definitely got some gas left. He’s not a Leo, is he? Is he a Leo? He might be. I don’t know. Hey, uh I was just I was looking um you know at some stories about Brunette just as far as his return, a team that finished seventh and Trotz had said that he’s looking for better buyin when he announced that he was coming back. Looking for better buyin from the players. So they’re not putting any any heat on the coach. No, the players need to buy in. And that is a combination of how the coach is pressing the buttons, how he’s pushing the buttons, you know, how he’s playing his lineups every night. Uh, I don’t get it. I really don’t. So, uh, a lot left in the tank though for Marches, right? 21 goals and then again moving up and down the lineup, not feeling comfortable, uh, what have you. I don’t know the other issues, but I’m sure there were a lot of off the ice issues as well, but here’s a guy that still has a lot more goals in the tank. He has to. I’m shocked that, not to keep going back here, but I’m shocked that brunette came back. This is the same coach that iced the wrong starting lineup and got a delay game penalty as a result of doing it for not not starting. It was against the Seattle Kraken. I believe uh the assistant coach pointed that out. So, uh good on her to find that at that moment. But, you know, it’s I look at Barry Trotz as a video game GM, right? He you know, you you can log on to HL25 or HL26 coming out in a month and a half or something like that. Now, you can log on and, you know, you can take any team basically in the off season and make a few trades and future draft picks and everything kind of EGK style and find a way to make that team good and, you know, maybe make a playoff run in the video games. and Barry Trotz. I mean, coming in three major pieces right away, not looking to build anything through through draft, just boom, three big free agents and here we go. Welcome to Nashville. We’re going to win a cup now. So, that’s why I don’t necessarily I’m not going to completely buy in that Marcho is on the move. Plus, he’s got the no move, the full no move. So, speaking of buyin, Marcho is going to have to buy into that. He’s got a full no trade clause, right? Yeah. I I do think Trotz is going to try to keep the band together for one more year and hope it was a fluke and hope brunette figures things out on his side and gets the buying from the players. So yeah, Nick Hey is there. Maybe they can just bond again and break go see Backstreet Boys at the Sphere maybe later in the summer. Metallica. We have to see how how maybe if hey if if Nashville gets to play here in Vegas early and they give them that same kind of push back about going to see a show. No you two in town. But maybe that would propel them to play well again. Any dead heads or anything? Any Grateful Dead fans in Nashville? I don’t know. I just think again, you know, they’re going to make adjustments and uh the exit interviews here in Vegas. If brunette were here, the burger flipping guy just would have went off and that would have been it, right? He would have been gone. It would have been gone. Burger flipping guy. Yeah, you saw the video. Of course, there’s still team chef wasn’t happy. He’s gone. No, chef Bjorn. Chef Bujorn. But yeah, no, I think it’s uh it’s interesting and I think Okay, so you’re saying it’s not going to happen. I’m gonna say I’m saying it’s unlikely possibility, especially if he’s a mal content there in the locker room. Uh if he’s spouting off like that, they might want to control that situation and see what value they can get out of. You get zero. You’ll get zero from you. You will if you It gets to that point giveaway. It’s future consideration. Exactly. That’s what it is. in future considerations or a seventh round pick, right? You know, they’re looking to see if they could find another top six winger there in Nashville probably, right? I think I listen, put him on Edmonson. Give me the drama. Oh my gosh, that would be phenomenal. We appreciate everyone tuning in. Also phenomenal, tomorrow is WTF day. Segways in abundance today. Uh don’t forget to leave your comments from my man Chris Golick. I’m Tony Kasco. See you tomorrow right here on Lockdown Golden Nights. Please take care.
The Vegas Golden Knights are only behind the back-to-back Stanley Cup champions Florida Panthers in early offseason power rankings. Coach Bruce Cassidy believes change is good for former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner. Are the Nashville Predators looking to trade former VGK Jonathan Marchessault?

Mitch Marner is a gamer and a leader who truly wanted to play for Vegas.
Marchy to Toronto and he wears #16 just to rub it in. Say what you will about him but he was clutch in our cup run (second round on).
Bit surprised at the rankings, some really big expectations for Marner if GK are ranked 2nd.
