Detroit Lions vs Los Angeles Chargers 07/31/2025 GAME HIGHLIGHTS| NFL Hall of Fame Game

are favored by a point. As you can see, there is some big names. There is some high die pick. Jaylen Herd, some man Ross St. Brown, some of your in the stadium. I see him right over there number eight Chargers safety before the game and I said, “Hey, how’s Hampton looking close? Last year the Chargers were top six in the NFL until special player.” I also think fantasy wise he’s die. Love it. For what it’s worth, I was just talking to that offensive line and they said stories where you talked about the players a little, right? But like everyone focuses on stats and how guys play to my life and I would not be here without the inspiration of the because Randy Moss is beating me to sleep every day in training camp. All right guys, well this is the Hall of Fame game and guess what? We got Hall of Famers. We got Gold Jacks are shaking hands with Warren Moon and uh Tony actually catching up with Let’s get to head across Jared Allen. Joshua Burns preschool. That’s amazing. What was the inspiration for that? That was when people like, man, thanks for thanks for representing for home. Well, we’re trying to bring it up here at NBC last year set a franchise record back-to-back division titles for the first time in franchise history, but they do not return their OC or their DC only playoff team that has to deal with that. I mean, where do we see them stacking up in the NFC? And that’s all the talk. Everyone wants to talk about Ben Johnson being gone and Aaron Glenn. I went up to Jared Goff in pregame and I said, “Hey, how’s all the news in us? How’s everything going?” He said, “It’s new. We’re learning, but we have really good players. So, he feels good about it. He’s letting the rest of the world, you should feel good, too. Yeah. Not only they have good players, they have an unbelievable head coach and a great general manager in Brad Holmes. And these guys are hip to hip. They were hip to hip when they were building this team. When you have success, the league takes the guys away from you. Coordinators are gone. Different guys on their offensive line. That’s been a big part of their identity. But I have a lot of faith in Campbell, a lot of faith in Holmes. Replace those guys and keep the train rolling as DC says. I I got faith as well, but I don’t think we can understate how big of a deal it is that they lost the two coordinators, especially Ben Johnson, who I think has been the best play caller in football. They are the Eagles are the the head of the class in the NFC. And then I look at the Lions to be right there with the Commanders and the Rams in that next year. Big year for Jared G. Hey, the last two years ends ends three interceptions in the divisional game. The year before that, they blow a 17-point lead. He’s going to have to step up in a big way as well. Some might argue Washington coming off of last year adding pieces. The Rams going to get Adams. Detroit might have fallen behind those teams instead of being right there. So, it’s going to be a good year. Detroit will be better on defense cuz they’re going to be healthier on defense. They were decimated down the stretch and it put different stresses on their team. My biggest concern, can they be balanced? Can be the can they be as physical as they’ve been up front on the offensive line? Yeah, that’s a great point. I mean, no playoff team had more players on IR than the Lions, and every single week we said, “How are they going to deal with it? How are they going to deal with it?” They managed it, but you could see it wearing on them in the postseason. All right, for more on the Chargers in the AFC. Let’s hear from Jack, Tony, and Rodney. Yeah, over in the AFC West, Maria, it has just belonged to Kansas. Almost a decade at this point than it’s been the Chiefs. How close are the Chargers to closing down that gap, do you believe? I think the Chargers, they’re getting closer. They’ve done a great job of solidifying that offensive line. They added some defense and interior of that defensive line. Coach, the biggest problem I have, I don’t believe that they have enough in the passing game. Lad McConi, I teased him. I said, “If I was going against you, it’d be one double L and because I’m not afraid of anybody else and I think that’s the only thing that’s holding them back, coach.” Well, the Chargers formula, you can see it developing under Jim Harbaugh. Stingy defense, tough, physical offense, win the time of possession, but that leads to close games. And in close games, you have to make the plays in the fourth quarter. That’s what we’ve got to see from them. And there was three playoff teams over there in the West, coach, but what’s it going to take for one of these teams to knock off Kansas City when it matters most, do you believe? Well, you’ve got great coaches in the West all the way through. But it’s going to come down to quarterback play in that final minute. Is Patrick Mahomes going to outplay Justin Herbert or is Justin Herbert going to make the plays to win the game? But also, you talk about defense. Denver has a really good defense. The Chargers have the number one defense, but the defense I trust more is Kansas City. They’ve done it on a big stage multiple times. We’re not going to have to wait real long for answers. Week number one, Chargers and the Chiefs in Brazil. In Brazil. So, we’re going to get those answers soon. Back over to Maria Taylor. All right, thanks guys. And coming up next on Football Night in America, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will speak with Mike Trico in his first interview since Monday’s shooting in New York. NFC champion Panthers. He’s tied for the league record in Green Bay Packers and was the first player in born in San Diego. He plays with the Eagles followed by seven more years with Allen touchdowns and the league’s alltime leader. They’ll be inducted season a stunning home playoff loss to Washington. Chris, a lot of the same characters are back for Detroit. The Lions were so good a season ago. They really were. But they just simply ran out of bodies, especially on the defensive side late in the season and for the playoffs. The good news is though that they get Aiden Hutchinson back and that guy was on pace. I know he didn’t play a lot of games, but on pace to be in contention, not just for defensive player of the year, but for the MVP. You’re talking a lot of Lions in the state of Michigan. Michigan is where Jim Harbaugh won the national championship with the Wolverines two years ago. Last year comes to the Chargers with six wins to 11. And this team this year, it’s starting to look like a Jim Harbaughesque team, you know. But how many times, Mike, seriously, have we gotten, man, this Chargers team, they they could have a chance and then it doesn’t happen, right? And this year, I’m thinking these Chargers, they could have a chance. And this year, I kind of believe it because this is built in Jim Harbaugh’s image. They’re bigger. They’re stronger. They’re faster. They already good last year. They’re better right now. And one of the guys we’re going to see is their first round pick, their running back, Omar Marian Hampton. Ready for football? Been waiting a long time. We’ll get to it. And we’ll hear witnessed an unimaginable act of violence at the New York City home of the NFL and neighboring businesses. We salute the heroism and bravery of law enforcement and security officers who responded to At this time, please stand and join us in a moment of silent reflection to honor know and interact with who work in the league office. Folks you don’t see but who make this league the success it is. All of you are on our minds collectively as we start the season here tonight. The season is year five for the Lions head coach Dan Campbell who spoke with Melissa Stark a short time ago. The Lions coming off a historic season. And Dan, it didn’t quite end the way you might have hoped, but what are you most excited about building upon from last year? Well, I I think just going back to work, you know, with the guys that we have, man, you don’t every year, man, when you when you fall a little bit short of what the ultimate goal is, man. You you don’t take those things for granted. You want to make sure you don’t repeat that mistake. And every little thing matters. And so that’s where we’re at. Our guys, we start over. And you have a new offensive and defensive coordinator. What challenges does that present? Well, it’s just about us all working together in the communication. The good news is is that I’ve worked with both of these guys and they’re outstanding coaches. It’s just about now that they’re in those roles, us being all on the same page, which we will work out all the kinks before the season gets here. It’ll be awesome, Dan. Great to see you. Have fun tonight. Yeah, you too. Thank you. Appreciate it. The energy and passion of not just Dan Campbell, but Jim Harbaugh who played in this game. Love it. Grant Stewart back for Detroit. The season begins. a running back in his past briefly in college given the chance to bring one out. Turns it over and the Chargers come up with it in the person of Caleb Murphy. See the punch there? The punch was made by Kendall Williamson, a safety for the Chargers. The question was, did the ball come out before Stewart’s knee was down? Looked like it, didn’t it? Looked like it was moving just a bit. Still waiting for confirmation on this or not. And one play into the season and we’re going to get a review. Previous play is under review. That’s the familiar voice of Bill Vineovich, who’s been the referee in three Super Bowls. He’s going to come over to the sideline, look at the tablet, and make the decision on the field here in this first quarter. Terry McCauley, our three-time Super Bowl referee, is with us. Terry, we wasted no time to bring you in, pal. Right off the bat, Mike, I see the ball clearly out before the knees down. We look from Los Angeles ball first down. Okay, so the Chargers do have it. In this first quarter, Trey Lance, the number three overall pick for the 49ers four seasons ago, begins at quarterback. Amari and Hampton, their first round pick is the bag. And on the boot, he’ll throw it complete to Will Dley, the tight end. Gain of nine for Dley, who had a terrific 50 catch season a year ago. Chris Treyland’s a guy we have seen a lot of in terms of being on rosters, but not on the football field. a guy that is still very young, younger than Michael Penn, younger than Tyler Shuck, who is going to be the Saints quarterback apparently this year. And Justin Herbert is the guy who is going to try and help him along. But the big question really is, can Jim Harbaugh crack the code and get him going? Here is the first round pick. Hampton with the run, a penalty flag is down as Amari and Hampton out of North Carolina taking 22nd overall in the draft as a first down for the moment. off side defense number 53. 5 yd penalty results in a first down. Zack Cunningham the linebacker offside. First down for the Chargers first round pick. It’s exciting. We’re seeing a lot of stuff in here. Not only the new young running back Amarian Hampton who I’ve never heard such praise about a guy. I mean every coach that we talked to said this guy just has a feel for getting in the gap and getting in the holes and just has this natural downhill ability. Then the ability to make people miss, ability to run over people and they are really excited.
