It’s REALLY happening! Surprises From Chiefs Training Camp 2025!

Finally, Chiefs Kingdom, we have real football news to talk about. The Chiefs are in the thick of training camp, and I am here to buy or sell hype on some different Chiefs players who are getting a lot of noise this training camp. So, let’s start off with the big one. Josh Simmons is running with the first string, playing as though he is the presumed left tackle. And I want to offer all of you an apology because I did a ton of research to look into patellar tendon in injuries that Josh Simmons was overcoming. And I think the thought process that I had was followed by 31 other teams or at least 12 other teams because there were 12 other teams needing a tackle in the 2025 draft that chose to pass on Josh Simmons and I think they were concerned because of his patellar tendon injury. You don’t come back from it very often. But the fact that Josh Simmons is already practicing, taking full practice reps means there’s only one conclusion and that conclusion is that it was a partial tear. It was a minor partial tear. And based on the evidence and the data for other players who have had a patellar tendon injury, the outcomes for players who have had a partial tear and a minor partial tear are significantly better than the players who had a full tear. The recovery time is faster. That’s how Josh Simmons has been able to get back on the field this quickly and the outcomes for the future of their career is better. So Josh Simmons doing well in camp. Am I buying the hype? Absolutely. 100% put the hype pants on me because I am allin with Josh Simmons. Josh Simmons is one of my two favorite draft picks for the Chiefs this year. And we’ll talk about the second one here in a little bit. But Josh Simmons has been playing very well in camp, turning a bunch of heads, and this tells me that this knee injury that he sustained last year is not going to cause a long-term problem. The fact that he’s able to get back on the field this early means that the biggest question around Josh Simmons has been answered. that knee is healthy and the injury was not as significant as it could have been. Earlier when I talked about Josh Simmons’s injury, I gave him about a 70 to 75% chance to get back to the player he was in college. Now I think that number’s higher, 85 90% chance. So great news. I am buying the hype around Josh Simmons. The next player I want to talk about is Bashard Smith. Bashard Smith, seventh round running back, selected by the Chiefs. Used to be a wide receiver in college, converted to be a running back his last year out of SMU. He’s a burner. He has good hands. Just a good football player. Not necessarily a good running back, a good football player. And am I buying the hype? Because he has been playing a lot with the ones. So, do I buy Brashard Smith having a role on this offense as a potential starter or a potential serious contributor for this team? And this is what I have to say about this. I will buy Brashard Smith’s hype. If in camp and the preseason he can block, if he can pick up a pass rusher, if he can pick up a blitz, give Mahomes a little bit extra time, I am buying Bashard Smith. If he cannot, then that’s a big problem because I think the Chiefs want to use Bashard Smith primarily on third down. Kind of what they did with Jerick McKinnon. So, if he cannot block, I am selling. If he can block and give Mahomes just a little bit more time, I am buying. The next player has turned a lot of heads at camp. Robert Tanyion, tight end. Now, he came from Chicago. Before that, he was at Minnesota or after that he was at Minnesota. didn’t play or didn’t record a single stat last year. The year before when he was with Chicago only had 100 yards receiving. He has turned a lot of heads at camp. He has looked good in the red zone. Am I buy or sell on Robert Tanyion? I am sell. I am not boarding the Robert Tanyion hype train. I think RGR Football is the best place for Chiefs content on YouTube, but of course I’m biased. The next player in my list, Nico Rami. Am I buying or selling the camp hype around Nico Riho? And I am buying it. Not because I think Riho is going to be a huge player in the Chiefs offense. I think he’s going to be the punt returner for the Chiefs in 2025. I think he earned that role down the stretch. And whenever you watch him last year on the field, whenever you watch him in training camp this year, he’s just got that extra bit of juice that you want to see from your punt returner. And I think he can do a lot of good things on this team. He also has a very confident look back there fielding punts which can be difficult especially in the summer in St. Joe gets pretty windy. Uh the air behaves a little bit differently in the summer. So I am buying Nico Rami’s camp hype to be the Chief’s punt returner. Next we have Taquan Thornton who has been making unbelievable play, unbelievable catch after unbelievable catch this preseason. Did it without pads. They put pads on a couple days ago. He did it with pads, too, catching an awesome pass in the corner of the end zone. He has looked apart. And if you remember, he was a second round pick when the Patriots took him. Their offense wasn’t very good. They did weren’t able to get much out of Taekquin Thornton. They let him go. The Chiefs picked him up and now he’s been looking great in camp for the Chiefs. Am I buy or sell on the Taekquin Thordon hype? I am selling it. I am not buying the Taekquon Thornton hype. And the reason I am selling it is because he had several years in New England. Even though they didn’t have the best quarterback situation, he had several years to make a dent in that office offense. He did not. And if you talk to Patriots fans, they will say, “Yeah, Taekwon Thornton looked great in camp every year, but whenever it came to preseason and the actual games, he just disappeared.” So, I am buying what the people who are Patriots fans are saying about Taekquin Thornton. Granted, I think if any coach would get more out of him than anyone else, it would be Andy Reid, but I think he might make the roster, but he will not make a big impact on this team or this offense. The next player I want to talk about is Jaylen Royals. You know, rookie, fourth round pick, coming from Utah State. I really like a lot of things about Jaylen Royals game. One of the things I like the most is that if you throw him the ball and it is in his catch radius, he is going to catch that ball. Very good hands receiver. And regarding Jaylen Royals camp hype, do I buy it or do I sell it? I’m going to say I will buy it while Rashi Rice is out on his suspension. I think the problem with Jaylen Royals rookie year, he has two things working against him. One of them is that he is an in in an Andy Reid offense, which very rarely is an easy place for a rookie wide receiver to have a lot of production. Rasheed Rice did it and Xavier Worthy had a little bit of production, too. But I think you’re going to see that there’s uh Rashid Rice’s, you know, third, fourth year within this offense are going to look completely different than his rookie year. Xavier Worthy’s second year is going to look completely different than his rookie year did. And I think because of the number of bodies the Chiefs have at the wide receiver position, Jaylen Royals will make some impact, but it’s a numbers game. So, I am buying Jaylen Royals while Rashi Rice is out, but when Rashi Rice comes back, I think that Jaylen Royals will have less of a role unless another player gets injured. So, I like what Jaylen Royals brings to the table, but too much too many miles to feed in that Chiefs wide receiver room, which is a good problem to have. The last player, buy or sell, Ashen Gelotti. So, I mentioned earlier I have two of my favorite picks for the Chiefs draft in 2025. My 1A is Josh Simmons. My 1B is Ashen Gelotti. And if you remember, I was talking about why I like Ashton Gelotti so much. It’s because he has a combination of production and athleticism and tape. Those are the three things are usually good identifiers for players who are going to succeed in the NFL. And if you have that holy grail production, athleticism, and tape, you are going to do well in the NFL. And and I shouldn’t say that, I should say you are much more likely to do well in the NFL if you have that trifecta. Ashton Gelotti has been the only player on the Chiefs defense to get the better of Josh Simmons in a pass rush set and it started a fight. So Josh Simmons was mad at Ashen Gelotti because he got beat by him. And I love that competitive fire from Josh Simmons. And I love that Ashen Gelotti didn’t back down. I also love that Ashen Gelotti beat this pass protector, Josh Simmons, who is having an awesome camp because it speaks to what Ashton Gelotti is doing. I think he will have a role on this defense and he will have some productivity in 2025. So am I buying the Ashen Gelotti hype? Absolutely. Back it up in a truck, shovel it in, do whatever you got to do, I am buying that Ashen Gelotti hype. But that’s it for the players that I have in camp who are kind of showing out and doing some things. And whether or not I buy or sell. So, Taekquin Thornton, sell. Josh Simmons, buy. Brashard Smith, buy if he can learn how to block, if he can become a pass protector. Jaylen Royals, buy while she rises out. Ashton Gelotti, I will buy. and Nico Riho I will buy and Robert Tanyion I will sell. So that is where I stand. Let me know down in the comments where you stand with the Chief Standouts in camp.
